Chapter 60

I felt my tool start to soften so I reached down and took the towel and managed to get it in between Bennie’s legs. I felt Bennie start to caress my chest. “So, let me ask you this baby. Do you really want to share this with anyone else?”

He reached back and slapped my ass. “Oh hell no, you’re all mine.”

“Well, that good fuck solved our problem with Chris.

Bennie started to nod off to sleep so before that happened I slapped him on the butt. “Huh, what was that for?”

“Come on love, we better get cleaned up.”

“Oh, do I have to move?”

“I can’t wash you in here, now come on and don’t forget to take the towel.”

Bennie grabbed the towel then headed for the bathroom. He sat on the toilet and expelled my deposit. I don’t know how long he was on the throne so after he was done, we took a warm shower. This was one time I was able to wash him without Bennie getting a boner. When we were finally clean, we returned to the bed and relaxed. I had just nodded off when my cell rang. “Mason.”

“Agent Mason, the President and his party are back.”

“Thank you,” I said then ended the call. “Come on Bennie, get dressed.”

“Man, can’t I get a nap?”

“Alright grouchy, just stay covered.” I said as I got dressed. “Your Dad is back.”

“Shit,” He said sitting up grabbing his shorts. “Why didn’t you say something?”

I had to laugh. “I just did.”

“Yeah, after you found out.” Bennie shot back.

“I flunked mindreading 101.” I tossed back.

“Funny,” Bennie retorted.

“I thought so,” I said through a giggle.

I heard the elevator open followed by Brenda’s voice. “Benjamin, that agent was rude.”

“Mother, I’ve told you time and time again; you’re not to interfere with them doing their work.”

“Benjamin, I’ll not have someone telling me where to go.”

“You weren’t paying attention.” Ben replied.

“Yes I was.”

“Sure you were. You were about to step in front of an oncoming car.”

“I saw it,” Brenda retorted.

Ben was totally frustrated. “Mother, if this is how you’re going to act when you go out, then we’ll just stay here.”

“And live like we’re in a prison?”

“We’re not and you know it.”

Bennie and I were heading to the dining room when we heard Ben and Brenda going at it. “God Ace, I’m glad I stayed here now.”

I kissed him on the cheek. “Based on what I’m hearing, I am too.”

As soon as we entered, Brenda stood up and went over to Bennie. “Benjamin, I’m not letting Bennie stay here a minute longer.”

“Mother, sit down.”

“I’ll not sit down. I also want you to resign. You’re not in a safe job.”

“What?” Bennie screamed. “Dad isn’t going to resign and I’m not going anywhere.”

“Oh yes you are, I am your grandmother.” Brenda shouted.

“You might be but that carries no weight.” Ben said.

“Now see here,” Brenda started. “I’ll have you know, I have rights too.”

Bennie went nose to nose with her. “Grandma, don’t make me choose between my dad and you because Dad will win out.”

“I see how it is; you’ve turned my grandson against me, haven’t you?”

“No grandma, he hasn’t. You’ve done that yourself saying Dad is going to resign and I’m going with you. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Will I have to go to court?” She shot.

“You’ll lose,” I said.

“And how would you know?”

“First off is Bennie’s age. Second is he’s been accepted to Georgetown University with a full scholarship.”

“Well, that can be transferred.” Brenda countered.

“Grandma, you don’t get it do you. I’m not going anywhere, I like it here. I have friends.”

I went over and took Brenda by the arm and led her out of the room. “Brenda, what’s gotten into you? You’re acting just like you did when you first arrived. You’re fixing to build a wall between everyone that can’t be torn down.”

“Ace, I can’t live like this.” She replied.

“You don’t have to.” I started. “This is Ben and Bennie’s life and one they’ve chosen to accept. Now, unless you want to push them so far away, I suggest you accept it too.”

“I don’t know if I can.”

“Well ma’am, if you think I’ll let you take my love from me, you’re sadly mistaken.”

“Just what is that supposed to mean?”

“Brenda, we’re going to tie the knot.” I said playing my trump card.

“Would I have to fight that?” She tried to counter.

“You’d lose,” I started. “Ben is in favor of it so you wouldn’t stand a chance of stopping it.”

“Are you sure about it?” She asked.

“Yes, I am.” I answered.

She sat down on the love seat and I sat beside her. “What do I do Ace?”

“What do you mean what do you do?” I asked.

“I am so confused right now it’s not funny.”

“Brenda, how many people can say their son-in-law is President of the United States?”

“Not many, I suppose.” She replied.

“That’s right and there have been President’s who have had children and they’ve managed just fine. Now, you’re going to have to accept it that Ben and Bennie have constant security around them and that’s for their benefit.”

“I know Ace but…” She started.

“No buts,” I said when she stopped.

“I bet it took months for Bennie to come around to you.”

“You’re wrong.” A voice said over my shoulder.

“Don’t tell me you took to him right away.” Brenda tried to counter.”

“Well, yeah I did. Ace treated me like a person and not a little kid. Plus he actually listened to me when I had a problem.”

“So you like all these people around you?”

“I’m used to it so it’s not a big deal plus I have Tonka and he is a big deterrent.”

“Speaking of Tonka, it’s about time you took him out.”

“That’s another thing, why are you telling Bennie what to do?”

“Grandma, stop it NOW.” Bennie interrupted. “I made a promise to care for him.”

“SO Ace is telling you what to do?” Brenda countered.

“Yes and speak for yourself. You’re in here telling Dad he’s going to resign as President; do you know how silly that sounds?”

“Look, I’ll do whatever I have to protect my family.”

“Even if we don’t want your interference?” Bennie retorted.

“I’ll do what I have to.” She answered.

“Then if you keep this up, I’ll do what I have to in order to protect myself and my son.”

Brenda’s head snapped around when she heard Ben speak. “Oh and what is that?”

“I can always ban you from the residence.” Ben answered.

“Then I could get a court order.”

“Good luck.” Ben started. “You’re forgetting I’m an attorney and I know the law.”

“Then you know grandparents have rights.”

“I’m aware of the precedents that have been set. But you haven’t read the rulings, have you?”

“I just read the highlights.”

“Then you would know there are stipulations that have to be met.”

“What stipulations?”

“I’m not going to debate the law with you. Now, I’m going into the living room to relax. I would hope that you stop these antics and enjoy your stay here.”

“And if I don’t?”

Bennie went over to her. “Then I’ll ask Ace to take you to the airport.”

“You wouldn’t.”

“Don’t try me.” Bennie replied firmly.

“Alright now,” Ben said stopping the goings on.

“Yes Dad.” Bennie answered relenting.

Brenda sighed then headed to her room. I decided to follow her. “Ace, what do I do? I want Bennie in my life.”

I thought for a moment. “Well Brenda, you didn’t win any points today trying to come on like a raging bull.”

“What else was I supposed to do? Benjamin didn’t want to listen to me.”

“Did you try talking to him rather than at him making unreasonable demands?”

I could see her mulling over my question. “Well, no I didn’t. After that agent pulled my arm treating me like a child, I lost it.”

“And what would have happened if he hadn’t done that?”

“I’d have seen that car.”

“Before or after it hit you?” I asked.

She turned red when I asked that. “Ace, I’m a grown woman.”

“Yes and they’re agents trained to constantly be looking out for danger. Look, I can give Bennie a command and he listens to me no questions asked because he knows what’s on the line. We’ve talked about this and he knows I’m only here to protect him and he’s totally accepted it.”

“I guess I’m having a hard time accepting that.”

“Brenda if you don’t, you’ll lose them and that would be a disaster.”

“I know now what is going to happen after Bennie graduates from college?”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I mean has Bennie thought of a career?”

“Brenda, you know full well what Bennie’s career goals are.”

“What, he’s going to be an agent like you?”

“That’s what he wants and if his grades are good enough, I don’t see any reason why he won’t be accepted.”

“If I know him he’ll be in the top of his class.”

“That’s our Bennie.” I said smiling.

After all this arguing, my head was splitting. I rubbed my temples and Brenda saw it. “What’s wrong Ace?”

I tried to play it off. “Oh nothing, just a little headache.”

Bennie heard my answer then I felt his hand in mine. “Come on baby, let’s get you in bed.”

The way I was feeling I wasn’t about to argue with him, so I turned around and let him lead the way. As soon as we entered the room, Bennie started undressing me. “What have you got in mind love?”

“Nothing baby, just getting you undressed so you can rest.”

I relaxed and soon Bennie was tucking me in. I felt him kiss my cheek then I closed my eyes. I heard the door close so I knew Bennie went out. He went to the living room. “Where’s Ace?” Ben asked.

“I put him in bed; he said he had a headache.”

“Alright son, let’s see how he is in an hour.”

I closed my eyes and tried to take a nap but my head felt like someone was inside with a sledge hammer. I pulled the pillow over my head and hoped that would work but it didn’t. Bennie came in and gently sat on the bed. The little shaking caused my head to pound more causing me to moan. “What’s wrong baby?” Bennie asked softly.

“I don’t know but my head feels like it’s about to explode.”

“Did you take anything?”

“Yeah, what I normally do but this one is being stubborn.”

“Do you need me to call the doctor?

Bennie wasn’t one to call Dr. Phillips at the drop of a hat. I tried to think but that was impossible. Just then I felt something start to churn in my stomach. I threw the covers off then bolted to the bathroom and stuck my head in the toilet. “Ace, what’s wrong?”

I tried to answer but the only thing that came out was the contents of my stomach. Poor Bennie ran out of the bathroom and the next thing I knew he was back with Ben. “How long has he been like this?” I heard Ben ask.

“He just started.”

I thought I was finally finished so I tried to stand up which proved to be a huge mistake. My stomach decided it wanted to be emptied so I stuffed my head back in it and heaved again. “Bennie, call Dr. Phillips. Tell him we really need him quickly.”

My stomach was finally empty so once again I tried to leave. Ben helped me to my feet then slowly we made it back to the bed. I got in then closed my eyes hoping this would help the banging. “How are you feeling?”

“Like my head is about to explode,” I answered.

I don’t know how long I’d been there when Bennie and Dr. Phillips came in. “What’s going on with Ace?”

“My head is killing me.”

“How long has this been going on?”

“I don’t know. I’ve had some headaches in the past but nothing like this.”

“What has worked for you in the past?”

“I’d take some Ibuprofen and it would go away but today it didn’t.”

“Did you take it when you first felt the headache coming on?”

“Not really. When I really noticed it, it was like it is now.”

“Let’s see what’s going on, shall we?” Dr. Phillips said cheerfully.

The first thing I had to do was sit up which made my head hurt more. He felt my neck and listened to everything then took out a light then started to look in my eyes. “Argh Doc,” I moaned.

He was looking at me when I felt my stomach churn again. I tossed the covers out of the way then hurried to the bathroom and barfed in the can. “How many times has this happened today?”

“I’ve lost track,” I answered then cut loose again.

I didn’t think anything could be left in it then I started with the dry heaves which was worse than the real ones.

Dr. Phillips helped me to my feet then back into the bedroom and put me back in bed. “Don’t move, I’ll be right back.”

As if I was really planning on going somewhere. “Don’t worry Doc, I’ll be here.”

He was gone a few minutes then came back with his arms loaded with stuff. He dropped it on the bed and I saw all the bags of fluids so I kind of had an idea what was on his mind. He sat down and took hold of my right arm then wrapped a rubber tourniquet around it then started slapping my forearm. “Ouch, that stings.”

He looked up at Bennie. “Is he always like this?”

“Yeah, he whines a lot.” Bennie replied getting in a little dig.

“Watch it love. Remember, I don’t get even I get ahead.”

“My, my, someone is Mr. Grumpy today, aren’t they?”

“Kiss it baby.” I said just as I got stuck. “Doc, next time call your shots.”

Before I knew it, there was an IV in my arm and Dr. Phillips was holding a syringe in his hand. “Lie still Ace.” He said as he slid the needle into the tubing.

“What is that?” I asked.

“This will help stop the vomiting and will make you sleepy.”

“Great, now what is this and how’d I get it?”

“From what I can see, you have a migraine headache. How you got it, I’m not sure but I want to run some tests so I can find out.”

“What kind of tests?” Bennie asked.

“For one, I’d like to do an MRI of his head.”

“That’ll be a bust, there’s nothing in it.” Bennie shot back.

I picked up a pillow and hit him in the head with it. “That’ll teach you, smart ass.” I said looking at Dr. Phillips. “Look Doc, I have court tomorrow and I can’t miss it.”

He gave me a stern look. “You will if I say you will.”

Just then, Bennie went out of the bedroom. A few minutes later, he returned with Ben. “Dad, Ace might have to miss court tomorrow and he doesn’t want to listen to Dr. Phillips.”

“I didn’t say that baby.” I tried to argue.

“I heard you.” Bennie countered as he reached for my phone.

Ben saw that then put his hand out. “That’s Ace’s phone.”

“I know Dad, I was going to call Dusty.”

“Are you trying for my job love?” I asked as I tried to fight the medication Dr. Phillips gave me.

“If you have to be in court tomorrow,” Bennie started then Ben covered his lips.

“What are you thinking Doctor?” Ben asked.

“This is one of the worst migraines I’ve seen in a long time and I’d like to run some tests so we can find an answer as to why it happened.”

“Can’t I just take something when they come?” I asked.

“It’s not that simple Ace.” Dr. Phillips replied as he drew some medicine into another syringe. “What I’m about to give you is a narcotic and it’s going to make you loopy.”

“He’s like that all the time.” Bennie said getting another dig at me.

“Gee thanks, I love you too.” I said in defense.

“Ace, you’re a cop and you carry a weapon so you need your wits about you at all times which means you can’t be under the influence of certain medications.”

“You’re right Doc but I hate hospitals.”

“I know you do but I can’t do what I need to in here.”

“Why not?” I said smiling.

“I don’t think an MRI machine will fit in here.”

“Agreed but can’t that be done as an outpatient?”

I saw him thinking. “It can but I can get you in and out faster if you were in inpatient.”

I closed my eyes. ‘Now what do I do?’ I thought and knew I was outnumbered.

“Alright Doc, what’s your idea?” I asked as I opened my eyes.

He looked up at Ben. “Well, I want to make arrangements for you to be admitted to GW Medical Center so I can get an MRI. What I’m concerned about is the fact you’ve taken several major blows to your head.”

“As hard as his head it, nothing could hurt it.” Bennie quipped then felt Ben’s hand on his butt. “Ouch.”

“That’ll teach you love.” I said as I watched Dr. Phillips on the phone.

“I have an admission.” Dr. Phillips said. “His name is Rich Mason. He is employed by the secret service and his home address is 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW”

Bennie went into my pants and took out my wallet and handed it to me. I found my health insurance card and handed it to the doctor. “Has his health insurance changed?”

“No, that’s still the same.” Dr. Phillips answered.

“Have him stop at the direct admission office and they’ll have his wrist band for him. How will he be getting here?”

I saw the doctor stop and think. “He’ll be brought in by ambulance.”

“What?” I said.

“Be quiet Ace,” Bennie said slapping my foot.

Dr. Phillips answered a few more questions then made another call. “Bennie, get Tonka and put him in Ace’s room.”

Bennie went out and a minute later he was back. “He didn’t like being left alone.” Bennie said then I watched as the door opened then I had a guest on the bed.

“Tonka,” I said as he put his head on my chest. “Be nice boy, Dr. Phillips is here to help me.”

Dr. Phillips went outside and I assumed he was waiting for the ambulance to get here. I stuck my hand out. “What?” Bennie asked as Ben put my phone into my hand.

I hit a number on the keypad. “This is Agent Mason, there will be an ambulance arriving, let it in.”

“Yes Agent Mason, who will be inside?”

“Don’t you worry about that,” I said.

“Yes Sir,” The officer said then I ended the call.

“Ace, who will stay with me?” Bennie asked.

I held my hand out and he came around and sat on the edge of the bed. “Don’t worry love, you’ll be safe.”

“Dad, please do something.” Bennie said as I heard him start to cry.

“Baby, look I don’t like this either so let’s just make the best of it.”

“How, this is the first time we’ve been separated.”

I pulled him to my lips then kissed him gently. “If it’s alright with your Dad, ask Chris.”

“Alright baby, but I’m going to the hospital with you.”

“If it’s alright with your dad and Dr. Phillips and you get security, it’s alright with me.”

Dusty and JR were working in the West Wing when they heard a siren. Dusty stepped outside so he could see what was going on then he saw the ambulance pull onto the property. He ran back inside. “JR, come with me.”

JR quickly shut his computer down then followed Dusty. “What’s going on?”

“I don’t know but there is an ambulance on the property. No one told me anyone was sick, did you get a call?”

“No I didn’t.” JR answered as they ran to the residence.

They came running inside and Tonka heard it so Bennie stuck his head out of the door. “What’s going on?” Dusty asked Bennie.

“Ace isn’t feeling well.” Bennie answered.

“What? Why didn’t he call me?” Dusty asked.

“He’s got a migraine and Dr. Phillips wants to admit him to the hospital.”

“Can I see him?” Dusty asked.

“Let me see.” Bennie said as he stuck his head inside. “Dad, Dusty is out here.”

“Let him in.” I said opening my eyes.

Bennie opened the door then my friend came in. “Bennie, the ambulance is here.”

“Take Tonka with you and put him in my room and make sure the door is closed tight. I said motioning for Dusty to side beside me. “Dusty, listen carefully. That chariot is for me. Dr. Phillips wants to run some tests on my head.”

“What did you do to that rock?” Dusty asked smiling.

“Funny,” I said slapping his leg. “Bennie wants to come too. If it’s alright with Ben and you can get enough security, it’s OK with me.”

“Ace, there is no way the hospital can handle a dozen agents.” Dr. Phillips said sternly.

“Doc, you’re not going to keep Bennie away forever.” I answered.

“I know but once you’re in your room it will be easier for him to visit you.”

“You’re the boss.” I said relenting. “How long will I be your prisoner?”

“It all depends on the MRI.” The Doc replied.

“When will you know the results?”

“As soon as I see the films.”

“You don’t need a big consultation?” I asked.

“I’ll be talking with the Radiologist just so I don’t miss anything.”

“Fair enough Doc.” I said as I heard the bang on the door then Tonka started voicing his displeasure at being locked up.

I closed my eyes tight as the noise caused my head to throb. “Over here guys and be gentle with him. He’s not been medicated yet.”

Dusty stood up then I felt the covers pulled down then hands slide under me and put me onto the stretcher. “Umm Doc, can you work your magic?” I asked as my head continued to throb.”

The medics started to roll me out of the room. “Hold up guys.”

They stopped then Doctor Phillips found the IV tubing. He slid the needle into it then slowly gave me what was in the syringe. I started to get a warm feeling then felt giddy. “Man Doc, what was in that jungle juice?”

“Ace that was 10 mgs of Morphine Sulfate.”

“That was a strong dose Doctor.” One of the medics said.

“I know that.” Dr. Phillips answered. “Do you have a problem with it?”

The medic was looking right at the Doc. “Ah, no Doctor, not at all.”

“Good, now get him down to the ambulance.”

The medic could tell Dr. Phillips wasn’t pleased with him. “Yes, Doctor, right away.”

The ride down to the first floor was smooth then it got a little bumpy as I was taken outside then down the curb to the driveway. I was about to be loaded into the ambulance when I saw Bennie standing there along with Ben. “Dad, please let me go with him.”

“Son, we’ll see him but the doctor needs to run that MRI on him and that has to come first.”

Bennie buried his head into Ben’s chest and started to cry. His wail broke my heart. I reached my arm out then I felt a medic move it. When he did that I grabbed it. “Don’t do that again.”

“We have to” He started but Dr. Phillips interrupted him.

“Don’t interfere with him and Bennie.”

I touched Bennie’s hip then I felt him take my hand. “Ace, will you be alright?”

I reached up and stroked his face. “I will be baby, now you just relax and try not to worry.”

“Oh, here is your phone.”

The medic went to take it but Bennie would have none of it. “That’s his phone and you keep your hands off of it.”

“Listen kid, I have a job to do.”

“Sir, if you value your job then you will learn your place.” Ben said getting into the man’s face.

“Yes Mr. President.” The man said contritely.

Bennie leaned down to my ear. “Ace, where is your gun?”

“It’s in my room. Ask Dusty to secure it for me, will you?” I answered.

“I’ll take care of it baby.”

“What are you two, a couple of fags?” The medic said causing Bennie to grab him by the shirt.

“Listen ass wipe, you just do your fucking job and don’t worry about it. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?”

“Listen kid, I don’t take shit from anyone.”

“I’ll have your job for this.” Dr. Phillips shouted. “You don’t question me or interfere with a patient’s private life.”

“You don’t have that kind of power.” The medic said with a cocky attitude.

“Maybe not, but I do.” Ben said. “I told you once to mind your mouth.”

“I apologize Mr. President.”

“That’s too little, too late.” Ben returned.

“Now, get him loaded so we can get to the hospital.” Dr. Phillips said.”

I was loaded into the back then Dr. Phillips stepped inside. “Relax Ace, I’m still your doctor.”

“Thanks Doc.” I said then closed my eyes.

I heard the engine start and then we were on our way. The trip was really smooth considering the mouth was driving. When we arrived, I was rolled into the emergency room then moved over onto a bed. Dr. Phillips was right there and I heard someone tell him, “If that is Agent Mason, they’re ready for his MRI.”

Several people came in and I was taken for the scan. The table felt like it was made of concrete so lying there was an adventure. “Agent Mason, you’ll need to be still.” The tech said.

“How long is this going to take?” I asked.

“It will take about forty five minutes.”

“Oh great,” I moaned. “Just make it quick.”

The tech left the room then the table started moving into position. The machine started and it started like someone was banging a hammer on the side of it. This did wonders for my throbbing head. Sometime during the test I must have dozed off because the next thing I remember was being moved off the slab onto the bed and seeing Dr. Phillips at my side. “How are you feeling?”

“I was doing alright until that damn test, now my head is about to explode.”

He walked beside me as I was wheeled back to the ER. I was taken inside then he disappeared down the hall. A few minutes later, he was back holding a syringe. “This will make you feel better.”

He put the needle into the tubing then gave me the medicine. “Wow, was that the same stuff you gave me before?”

“Yes it is. If your head starts to hurt again, just ring for the nurse.”

Just then, a guy came up beside him. “This is Jesse. He’ll he your nurse.”

I’m glad I was in bed because this guy was stunning. Any other time, I’d have wanted his number. “How are you feeling now?” He asked in a soft voice with a smile on his face.

“Better now.” I answered. “Are you assigned here to the ER?”

“No, I’m assigned to the medical floor. You’ll be moved there as soon as your room is ready.”

I reached out and he took my hand. “Listen, there will be a lot of people coming in and out.”

“Not on my shift.” He said.

“You don’t understand, these people will be with the Secret Service and they have a job to do just like you do. They won’t interfere with your work.”

“Fair enough,” He said.

Just then, two guys came in and I was on my way to my home away from home. A few minutes later, I was in my bed. I saw my pants on the chair so I tried to reach them. I’m glad I had long arms because I could only reach them with two fingers but I did then found my phone where Bennie put it. Just as I retrieved it, it buzzed. I hung my pants over the rail then looked at what I received. There was a news report that two American men had been arrested in Zambia and were going to be tried for sex crimes. I had to read the whole thing before I found out what crimes they had committed. It seems in that country it was really illegal for men to have consensual sex. I decided to call Ben. “Ben, it’s Ace. We have a problem.”

“Yes we do, why are you calling me when you’re to be resting?”

“That’s not it Sir, two Americans in Zambia have been arrested and are facing trial for having consensual gay sex. If they’re convicted, they could be executed.”

“Damn, I don’t need this now.” He said.

“Can you get the Secretary of State to look into it and see if she can get them released with a promise they won’t ever go back to that country?”

“Do you want to go into politics now?” Ben asked.

“No Sir, it was just a thought to try and help.”

“I understand Ace. I’ll call her and get her on this. I just got this news report too. Now you get some rest.”

Ben ended the call so I laid back and closed my eyes so I could take a nap. I don’t know how long I was sleeping when I heard people in my room. “What’s going on?”

My eyes were still closed but I felt a pair of lips on mine and I knew right away who it was. I reached my hand up and caressed his head. “You can’t figure out who this is?”

“Oh yeah, baby.” I said as I heard a cough in the background. My eyes shot open and there stood Dr. Phillips.

“Bennie, my patient needs to rest.” Dr. Phillips said smiling.

“I am honest.” Bennie said defensively.

“Relax baby, he’s pulling your leg.”

When everything settled down, Ben came over and sat down beside the bed. “Ace, I looked into that news article.”

“What did you find out?” I asked

“They’re Naval officers.”

“Naval officers, this is outrageous. Are they looking to start a war?”

“I don’t know but I have an idea.” Ben said.

“Oh, fill me in.”

“They’re from the GW Battle group.”

My mind went to work when I heard that. “So do I and here it is. Send several fully armed FA-18 Hornets over the country in a full show of force.”

I could see the wheels turning in his head. “That might just work. I’ll talk to the SecNav and get it organized.”

“I’d let them know right away that those officers are to be released right away and we’ll deal with them.”

“Deal with them how?” Ben asked.

I had to think. “I know this could end their careers but how about Conduct unbecoming.”

I’d really hate to do that.” Ben said.

“Me too but they don’t know it. If they think we are taking it seriously, they might allow us to deal with it.”

“Alright, I’ll try and sell them on it.”

All we could do now was wait and see what happened because I knew very little about Zambia. I didn’t know how much they really knew about us but I didn’t want to see two gay officers punished since they were off the ship. I was interested in knowing how they found out they were having sex since I didn’t believe they would be screwing in public. I had just finished dinner when my cell rang. “Mason.”

“Agent Mason, this is Francine Melnick.” The voice said.

“I’m sorry, who is this?” I asked.

“Francine Melnick, the Secretary of State.”

I’m sorry Ma’am, I didn’t recognize the name.”

“That’s alright. I’m new to this position.”

“Oh, welcome to the team.”

“Thank you, I talked with the Ambassador to Zambia and they seem to have solid evidence.”

“Oh, what kind of evidence?” I asked. “Anything short of actually witnessing the act won’t work for me.”

“Well, they have a complaining witness.”

“Did they actually see them in the act?” I asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Madam Secretary, that isn’t good enough for me. That’s just here-say as far as I’m concerned.”

“Agent Mason, we have to tread lightly here.”

“Ma’am, we’re talking about two American Naval Officers.”

“Yes, who have broken the law in Zambia.”

“Allegedly, broken the law.” I shot back. “Here-say isn’t tolerated. I’d like to know how this person saw them.”

“You’re a tough agent.” She said.

“At times I have to be. You haven’t met the former Director of NCIS, now there is a tough agent.”

“Agent Moore, I’ve heard a lot about him.”

“You’re lucky he’s not the director now. He’d be chomping at the bit to get to speak with the Ambassador.”

“I’ll speak with him again.”

“Please do and if they try and convict them in a kangaroo court, they’ll regret it.”

“I’ve heard the President’s plan and it might work or create a bigger problem.”

“Personally, I’d like to see the Marines go in and free our men.”

“That would start a small war.”

“Yeah, it might but they’d learn not to mess with us. I think we should tell Americans to steer clear of that country.”

“I have to agree, we don’t need innocent people captured over nothing.”

“Can we refuse entry to Zambians?”

“I’ll have to think about that,” she said.

“Alright, let me know what the Ambassador has to say.”

“I will, good bye.”

I closed my eyes and thought about that conversation. I was about to call Ben when Dr. Phillips came in. “Do I have to take that away from you?”

“Not on your life Doc.” I need that.

“You’re supposed to be resting.”

“Sorry Doc, but the rest of the world didn’t get that memo.”

“You’re not funny.” He said fighting back the giggles.

I smiled at him. “I thought I was.”

He finally broke down and started laughing. “Alright, but keep it to a minimum.”

“I’ll try, so what brings you here at night?”

“I have the results of your MRI.”

“Did I crack my coconut?”

“For as many times as you’ve kissed the ground, you’ve been lucky. There is no damage.”

“So what’s causing these headaches?”

“I think I have an answer for that too.” He said as he handed me some pills. “Your blood pressure is up there so we have to get it down.”

“How bad?” I asked

“It’s moderately high right now.”

“What caused it?” I asked

“Just age,” Dr. Phillips started. “You eat a healthy diet and you’re not over weight. Your cholesterol is good so I think this medication will work well for you.”

“Do you think this job is causing it?” I asked. “I mean there is a lot of stress and other crap I have to deal with.”

“That could have a bearing on it but I’m not ready to force you into retirement.”

“Good because I’m not ready for a rocking chair.” I added. “I get out and exercise regularly. I jog all the time.”

“I’ve read your last proficiency test. Your 2 mile run was great. You out did people ten years younger than you.”

“That’s good to know.” I said. “I do my best to watch my weight.”

“All in all you’re in pretty good shape. I don’t have to ask how your sex life is.”

I felt my face turning red. “Uh no, that’s good.”

“Ace, you’re blushing.” Dr. Phillips said breaking out into a laugh.”

“Well, I’m just not used to discussing my sex life.”

“Relax my friend, I’m your physician so everything you say is confidential.”

I relaxed then. “Thanks Doc, I feel better now.”

“I don’t think I need to give you the safe sex lecture, do I?”

“Doc, I only have one lover.”

“I know but there are new diseases coming out all the time and they’re really hard to treat.”

“Thanks for looking out for us.”

“No problem.” He started. “Now, those meds should take a couple days to start working.”

“I have to stay here that long?” I almost shouted.

“Well, if we can get your headaches under control we can get you home.”

“Thanks Doc. I really could do without them, personally.”

“Alright Ace, I’ll be back in the morning. If you need anything, just ring for the nurse. I’ve ordered medication for you.”

He came over and gave me the once over then left for the evening. I closed my eyes and thought about that conversation. I hoped the medication worked to stop these headaches because I hated them. I’m a lousy patient. Just then, I remembered the call I had to make.

I called Ben’s cell. “Yes Ace? Aren’t you supposed to be resting?”

“I’m fine Sir. I had a call from the Secretary of State and she got the details of the charges.”

“I’m aware of them and I can’t believe they would be willing to arrest someone who broke the law at the same time.”

“I’m not for taking this lying down.” I said getting a little excited.

“Neither am I. I’ve already spoken to the Ambassador and set our terms out.”

“Terms?” I asked. “You’re not going to let them try them are you?”

“No I’m not. I’ve spoken to the SecNav and the JAG so they understand what I’m planning.”

“Are they on board with it?”

“The JAG wasn’t too happy but he didn’t argue with us.” Ben replied.

“Good, because I don’t want to see their careers ruined over this.”

“Me either but I have a feeling it might land up in their personnel file.”

“Now, is the Navy going to make a big deal out of this?”

“I don’t know, only time will tell.”

“Alright, are they going to release them to our people?”

“I’m working on it.”

“Alright, just don’t make any guarantees to them.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean promise them they will face charges in our court. I also think we might want to put them on a watch list for tourists, especially gays and lesbians.”

“Good idea, I’ll talk to the Secretary of State.”

Just then another idea hit me. “Oh Sir, one more thing. I might be over reacting but do we want to allow Zambian’s into the country?”

“Why not?”

“Well Sir, I’m afraid of them trying to take their laws into their hands here.”

“How about I talk with Homeland Security.” Ben asked.

“Good idea, I just don’t want them attacking gays and lesbians in their own country.”

“I’ll mention that to him.”

“Thank you Sir.” I said then ended the call.

I laid my head back against the pillow and felt my head start to throb so I called for the nurse. “May I help you?” A voice answered.

“Yes, my head is starting to throb again.”

“I’ll tell your nurse.”

A few minutes Jesse came waltzing in with a smile on his face. “I have your medication for you. I don’t suppose I could get your number, could I?”

“Sorry man, I’m spoken for.”

“Story of my life.” Jesse said. “I do have to say that young man you have there is quite a looker.”

He pushed the medicine into the I-V and once again I felt warm, then closed my eyes. “That he is and I’m happy to say he’s all mine.”

“You’re one lucky man.” Jesse replied then stuck the syringe in the red container hanging on the wall then washed his hands before leaving the room.

The medicine was easing the pain so I closed my eyes and let it put me to sleep hoping when I woke up my headache would be gone once and for all.

The next thing I remembered was a nurse trying to take my vital signs. I cocked an eye open and I could focus on the person. “What are you doing?”

“Relax your arm Mr. Mason, I need to take your blood pressure.”

I relaxed and then I felt the cuff start to inflate. It seemed to take forever and my fingers were going numb. “God man, turtles fuck faster than this.”

“It’s automated,” Jesse said. “I know it’s slow but it’s really accurate.”

I felt the cuff totally deflate then I moved my fingers to get the circulation going in them. I looked at the numbers and my blood pressure was where it was when I first went into the Air Force, which was 120/80 and that I was thankful for. “Man, those numbers look great.”

“You’re not supposed to see those.” Jesse said clearing the machine.

“Stuff it,” I said smiling at him.

He turned around and shook his ass at me. “It’s right here.”

“If I wasn’t taken, I’d fill you to overflowing.”

“Promises, promises,” Jesse replied then left the room.

I eased the head of the bed up to see if my head would start hurting again and it didn’t. I flipped on the television and caught the morning news. I was blown away by a story they ran. It seems Zambia had released the two Naval officers. The reporter started with “Two Naval officers held in Zambia have been released and turned over to an NCIS agent aboard the USS George Washington. Zambian officials have been assured the men will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.” When I heard that, I grabbed my phone. “Good morning Sir,”

“Hi Ace, how’s the head?” Ben answered.

“Much better and Dr. Phillips has me on some blood pressure medication.”

“I guess we’re going to have to watch your stress level.”

“Well, let’s see what the medicine does.” I said. “Now, what is this I heard on the news and those officers are going to be punished?”

“Relax Ace,” Ben started. “Nothing will happen.”

“It better not Sir.” I quickly shot back. “Have you talked to the SecNav?”

“Yes I have and I’ve been assured the men will be returned to full duty.”

“What about their personnel jackets. Nothing will be put in there, will it?”

“Not to my knowledge.” Ben replied.

“Good, but they need to see their files periodically to make sure nothing has been slipped in.”

“Ace, the SecNav is on it.”

“I understand Ben but what will happen after Kevin retires, you don’t need a homophobic bastard to take his place.”

“I’m on that too.” Ben countered.

“Sorry Sir, but this is something I’m more than a little passionate about.”

“I understand, so how is your head now?”

Even after that, my head felt fine. “Wow, it feels great. Maybe the doc will spring me today.”

“Don’t push it now.” Ben replied.

“You don’t want me back?” I asked.

“You know better than that.” Ben answered. “You need to talk to Bennie. He’s been moping around here ever since you left. I had Chris sleep with him last night.”

“Was he that bad?” I asked.

“He acted like he’d lost his best friend. He got on my lap and didn’t want to move.”

‘Man, he was really lost.’ I thought.

“Where is he now?” I asked.

“He’s right here.” Ben said.

“Hello?”

“Hi baby,” I replied.

“Ace, when are you coming home?”

“Hopefully today.” I said.

“Don’t push it Ace.” I heard Ben say in the background.

“I’m not, mother, but I hate this place.”

Bennie started laughing when I said that. “I think you’re in for it when you get back.”

Even I was laughing. Then the door opened and Dr. Phillips came in. “Hi Doc, I’m feeling great today.”

“I can believe that.” He started. “Your blood pressure is where it should be.”

“So when can I get sprung?”

“Well, I want to have you do some things and if your pressure stays down, I’ll consider letting you leave.”

“Oh, what’s on your mind?”

“I want to put you on a treadmill and get you to exercise some.”

“OK, not a problem. When can we do this?”

“You’ll be taken down at about 10. I’ll be there with you so I can monitor everything.”

“Sounds good,” I replied. “When’s breakfast, I’m starving.”

“The trays are coming down so they should be here shortly.”

Just then, the door opened and Jesse was carrying a tray. “Breakfast is served.”

He set it on the stand and pushed it in front of me then took the cover off. I looked at it and I could see it wasn’t Gloria’s cooking. “Is that all?”

Dr. Phillips looked at Jesse. “See if you can get him another tray.”

“I’ll call down to dietary right away.” Jesse replied then left the room.

“Alright Ace, eat your breakfast and I’ll see you in Physical Therapy.”

I set the phone down on the table and ate while Bennie and I continued to talk. “So did you manage to get any sleep baby?”

“A little,” He answered. “Chris slept with me.”

I couldn’t believe he couldn’t sleep with Chris cuddled with him. “Did he hold you love?”

“A little,” He whispered which told me he wasn’t alone.

“Why don’t you go down to your room so you can talk?” I asked.

“Alright,” He said.

It just hit me. “Baby, I have to call Dusty.”

“OK love, I love you.”

“I love you too.” I replied then ended the call then called Dusty.

“Yes Ace,” He answered.

“Dusty, call Adam Graham please and let him know I’m stuck in here.”

“I did yesterday. He said. “He said he would ask for a continuance.”

“Good. Please let me know what happens.”

“I will buddy. How are you feeling?”

“A hell of a lot better than I was yesterday,” I answered.

“Great, when will you be out of there?”

“Hopefully sometime today. I have to walk on a treadmill for the doc.”

“What’s that for?” Dusty asked.

“He wants to see if my blood pressure goes up too much.”

“You have high blood pressure?”

“Yeah, I do.” I answered. “That’s what was causing the headaches.”

“Oh man, you’re not going to have to retire, are you?”

“Are you trying to get rid of me?” I asked.

“You know me better than that.” Dusty said sincerely. “I just want you healthy and I know Bennie does too.”

“I was just kidding buddy.” I said. “I’d be worried about you too if you were in here.”

“Alright buddy, look you get some rest now.”

“I will and I hope to see you this afternoon.” I ended the call then waited for them to get me for my test.

Over at the courthouse, Adam was getting ready for his arraignments. He sat down when a Marshall brought Maurice Lawson in. Lawson looked over at him “Hey, where is that cop Mason?”

Adam ignored him when Lawson made a huge mistake. He tried to stand up to get to Adam. The Marshall was on him before he could completely stand up. “Sit down and don’t make me tell you again.”

“Hey, I have a right to know where the arresting officer is.”

“Just sit there and shut your trap.” The Marshall said poking him in the chest with his finger.

Just then we heard, “All rise, this court is now in session; the Honorable Harold Stein presiding.”

“Be seated,” The jurist said after he took his seat. “Alright bailiff, what is first on the docket this morning?”

“You have some arraignments. The first one is the USA versus Maurice Lawson. The charges are conspiracy to commit kidnapping.”

“Is the Government ready to proceed?” Judge Stein asked.

Adam stood. “Adam Graham for the USA. At this time, we would like to ask for a continuance.”

“On what grounds?” Judge Stein asked.

“The arresting officer is in the hospital.”

“A likely story.” Lawson said.

“Mr. Lawson; that will be just enough; I’ll not have you disrupting these proceedings.”

“I have a right to face my accuser.” Lawson said.

“Mr. Lawson, you put yourself in this predicament.” Adam said.

“Mr. Graham, address your comments to the court.”

“My apologies Your Honor.” Adam said.

“When was Agent Mason admitted?” Judge Stein asked.

“Yesterday afternoon,” Adam answered. “He’s under the care of Dr. Nathan Phillips.”

“I see,” Judge Phillips said. “I hope it’s nothing too serious.”

“He’s getting severe migraines and the Doctor needs to find out the cause so he admitted him.”

“Sure, anything to make me stay in jail,” Lawson spouted.

“Mr. Lawson, you’re in contempt.” Judge Stein said.

“I demand the charges be dismissed.” Lawson screamed.

“Marshall, remove him. “Mr. Lawson, that will cost you 10 days in jail.”

“What’s another ten, I’m stuck in here.”

“Mr. Lawson, when you’re arraigned, you will serve that time before you can be released on bail.” Judge Stein shouted then banged his gavel, “Next case.”

Lawson was literally dragged back to his holding cell. “I’ll get you all for this.”

Judge Stein looked at Adam. “Mr. Graham, are these people involved with the warrant I gave you?”

“Yes Your Honor.” Adam replied.

“I will grant your continuance. As soon as Agent Mason is fit to testify, I want to be informed.”

“I will Your Honor. Thank you.” Adam said as he packed his briefcase then left the courtroom.

I was watching the news when I heard my cell ring. I see who it is. “Yes Adam.”

“Lawson stuck his foot in his mouth again.” Adam said.

“That doesn’t surprise me; he’ll get himself put out of the courtroom during his trial. Did you get the continuance?”

“Yes I did. Judge Stein wants to know when you’ll be able to testify.”

“Barring any problems, I should be home later today so I could be in court tomorrow.”

“That is great news.” Adam said.

“I know. I’ll let you know when I’m home and we can plan from there.” I said then ended the call.

I called Bennie back. “Hi baby.”

“Can you talk now?” I asked.

“Yeah, I’m in the bedroom.” Bennie answered.

“So how come you couldn’t sleep?”

“It wasn’t you holding me.”

“Aww, well I might be home this afternoon so you’ll have me back again.”

“Might be, you don’t know?”

“Sorry sweetie, that’s the best I can tell you. My chariot is here.”

“Where are you going?”

“They’re taking me to Physical Therapy so I can do a treadmill test.”

“Who wants this?”

“Dr. Phillips does so he can monitor my blood pressure.”

“Oh, do you have high blood pressure?”

“Yeah baby, I do.” I said as the guy came over with the wheelchair. “Hold on while I get into the wheelchair.”

“My, someone is getting lazy.”

“That’s how they move patients around. I’m quite capable of walking and I will get you when I get home.”

“Sure you will.” Bennie said trying to keep this going.

“Fine then, you’re cut off.”

“Baby, no fair.”

“I told you I get ahead.”

I sat down then we were on our way. Bennie and I talked all the way to the department. Dr. Phillips was waiting for me. “OK, Ace, I’m going to put these leads on your chest and this blood pressure cuff on your arm.”

“Man, I feel like a human guinea pig.”

“Do you want out of here or not?” he asked.

“You know the answer to that doc,” I replied as he hooked me up.

He started the machine and I started walking. “This isn’t bad.”

After several minutes, he increased the speed. “How’s that?” Dr. Phillips asked as the cuff started inflating.

“Not too bad.” I answered.

“Good, now I’m going to lift the front up a little.”

He raised the foot up and the walk got a little harder. I saw the blood pressure machine and watched as it took my pressure.  The numbers that came up weren’t as bad as they could have been. It was 94/82. “How’s those numbers doc?”

“Looking good Ace,” He replied as he speeded the machine up.

“You want me to run now?”

“If you have to.”

So I broke out into a trot. He kept it up for another ten minutes then he started to slow it down. I was breathing hard as the machine stopped. I saw someone from the department. “Do you have some Gatorade?”

The guy brought me a bottle then I drank some it down. “That quenches my thirst. So how’d I do?”

He was watching my ECG tracings on the monitor. “You’re in pretty good shape.”

“Thanks doc, you now I have to be. So did I pass?”

He had printed out the tracings and was looking at them. “Your strips look remarkably good all things considering. How’s your head feeling?”

“Good as new, no pain, yet.” I answered as I found a chair to sit in.

“I’m glad to hear that.”

“So don’t keep me in suspense. What’s the verdict, can I get sprung?”

“I want you to completely cool down. I need to make sure that migraine doesn’t come back.”

I looked at the clock and it was almost 11:30. “What time is lunch?”

“Trays come up around noon.”

“Good, I’m starving. I hope I get more this time then I did for breakfast.”

“Alright, let’s get you back to your room and I’ll work on your chart.”

“How often do I take my blood pressure medicine?”

“Once a day, preferably in the morning,” Dr. Phillips replied. “I’ll come up and check it at night so I can be sure it will hold you over night but I’d like you to get a home blood pressure cuff.”

“Alright doc, I’ll get one. Now, what’s the verdict?”

“It’s almost lunch time. I have a friend who is a cardiologist, I’ll have him look at these EKG tracings but I think you can go home. How are you feeling?”

“My head isn’t ready to explode, if that’s what you mean.”

“Excellent, that what I was hoping for.”

The transport guy pushed me down the hall and the next thing I knew, I was at my room. When we went in, there was a tray on my bed stand. “Ah, lunch is here. I’m starving.”

Doctor Phillips took the lid off. “Ace, this should fill you up, I ordered you an extra large portion.”

I looked at the food. “Man doc, they sure gave me enough.”

I got into bed and pulled the stand over and dug in. Today I had fried chicken, sweet potatoes and green beans. “Well buddy, enjoy your lunch. I’m off to see my friend.”

“Have fun,” I said as I dug into the food. “Man, you gotta get me outta here. I need some real food.”

The food here was barely adequate and not nearly as tasty as Gloria’s. Dr. Phillips laughed as he opened the door. “If my friend says these tracings are alright, which I believe he will, I’ll get you home this afternoon.”

“I love you doc,” I said putting some chicken into my mouth.

“Should I tell Bennie you said that?” Dr. Phillips replied as he opened the door.

“Bennie knows I love only him.” I countered.

The doc left the room while I ate my lunch. All in all it wasn’t that bad but they need to do something to keep the food warmer because the chicken was almost cold. I finished my meal then went to the bathroom to wash my hands. While I was in there, I had a guest arrive. When I stepped out, I was surprised. “What a nice surprise.”

“Hi Ace, when will you get out of here?”

“OH oh, do I detect an ulterior motive for your being here?” I asked as I got back in bed.

Adam giggled. “No but you really should think of wearing underwear.”

I quickly got in and pulled the covers over me. “Did you enjoy the view?”

“Well, the view was nice but the plumbing needs to be changed.”

“I haven’t gotten any complaints. So what brings you here?”

“Well, I wanted to let you know Lawson shot his mouth off to Judge Stein.”

“Surprise, surprise.” I replied. “He could never keep his trap closed.”

“Tell me about it,” Adam countered. “But Judge Stein said something that has me concerned.”

“What’s that?” I asked.

“He said Lawson would have to serve ten days for contempt if he managed to get bail.”

“OH shit, tell me he’s not really going to consider giving Lawson bail?”

“I hope not,” Adam answered. “We will have put all our cards on the table so that won’t happen.”

“Alright, what do we have?”

“Ace, you tell me.” Adam asked. “You’re the investigating officer.”

“We will have the testimony of Phillip Ware.” I replied.

“Yes, but you know Lawson will do anything he can to discredit him.”

“He won’t be able to because Ware never asked a leading question.” I countered.

“True but Lawson won’t care. He’ll try and twist it.”

“Let him try.” I said hoping Adam would change the subject.

Adam was about to say something more when the door opened. “Ace, what’s the verdict? Are you out of here?”

I was surprised when Dusty walked in. “What brings you here?”

Just then he opened the door and I had to prepare myself for my baby. Bennie ran in and almost jumped into my arms. “God love, I’ve missed you.”

He planted a kiss on me then I turned him so I could hold him. “I’ve missed you too.” I replied as I could tell something was on his mind. “What’s wrong baby?”

He looked at me then looked down. “It’s gramma.”

“What’s she doing?” I asked hoping it was nothing too big.

“She came into my room. I was … umm … well you know and she almost caught me.”

I’d told her our rooms were off limits. “When did she do this baby?” I asked as I caressed his back.

“Last night after dinner,” Bennie replied.

I felt myself getting mad so I had to calm myself down before I gave myself a migraine. “What did you do baby?”

“After I cussed at her?”

I was shocked. “You cussed at your grandmother?”

“Well, she just walked into my room and didn’t even have the decency to knock. Hell love, even you knock and you share the room with me.”

He was right. When I knew he had someone in there with him, I knocked in case he was in the middle of something. “Yes I do love. Then what did you do?”

“I told Dad and he wasn’t happy.”

“Did he have a talk with her?” I asked wondering if this was going to be left up to me.

“After I yelled, I went back to my room so I don’t know. Would you talk to her?”

“Alright baby, I’ll speak to her. I have a solution to this but it would mean you have to have your keycard with you at all times.”

“What’s that, do you mean close the outer door to the hallway?”

“That I do.” I answered as he started getting heavy on my lap.

I slid him onto the bed then there was a knock on the door and Dr. Phillips came in. Bennie went over to him. “Can Ace come home now?”

I saw him smile so I had an idea the meeting with the cardiologist went well. “Yes Bennie, Ace can leave here.”

Bennie ran over and pulled the covers down and took my hand. “Come on love, let’s get out of here.”

I stood up and fixed my gown. “Umm love, can I get dressed first?”

“Sure baby,” Bennie started then went to the closet and pulled my clothes out. “Here you go love.”

He set them on the bed then tried to take my gown off but I held on to it tightly. “Love, we do have guests.”

“You’re not getting modest, are you?” Bennie asked as I was turning several shades of red.

“No but I’m not about to strip in front of Adam.”

Dr. Phillips came over and pulled the curtain around the bed. “There you go Ace, now you can have your privacy.”

“Thanks Doc.” I said while slipping my undies on.

I had just managed to get my pants on when Bennie pulled the curtain open. “You’re slow love.”

I got my shirt on then slipped my tie over my head and pulled it in place. “Baby, I have to get my discharge papers then my chariot has to take me downstairs.”

I looked around and didn’t see Dr. Phillips so I had a feeling he was getting my release papers. I felt for my weapon then remembered I was naked. Dusty stood up and came over. I felt him put it in my holster. “Do you feel better now?”

“Yes, I feel totally naked without that.”

He gave me a hug then I heard the door bang open as a nurse with a wheelchair come in. “Mr. Mason, I’m here to take you downstairs.”

I managed to walk over and sit down then felt someone pick my hand up. Bennie was holding it as we made it out into the hall then head to the elevator. I saw JR standing outside and I gave his hand a little squeeze. “Welcome home boss.” He said as he joined the procession.

“I’m not your boss JR.” I said lightly.

“How are we going to get everyone back to the residence?”

“I have the Hummer,” Dusty answered.

I was glad of that because there were five agents from the security detail lining the walls. I don’t know how we did it but everyone managed to fit into the elevator car for the ride to the ground floor. Dusty was the first one off when the doors opened. By the time we’d reached the main entrance, Dusty was pulling up in the Hummer.

Bennie was about to walk outside until JR reached out. “No you don’t.”

Bennie stopped in his tracks. “Sorry JR he said then the agents got him into the Hummer then I went in. Once everyone was in, we headed for the residence. I got a warm greeting from the officer at the gate. “Welcome home Agent Mason.”

I waved as we drove onto the grounds. As soon as we were parked, everyone quickly unloaded. I was about to take a step when I heard a loud bark. I dropped to one knee when was licked by Tonka. “I’ve missed you too boy.”

He sat then hit me on the shoulder with his paw. Bennie laughed. “Serves you right baby, he just said ‘Don’t do that again.’”

“Trust me love, I don’t intend to.” I replied as I stood up then we headed inside.

When I stepped off the elevator, Chris greeted me warmly. “I’m glad you’re finally back.”

I could see a look on his face that said it all. My first stop was to my room so I could get out of my suit.

As soon as I entered, it looked like a hurricane had hit it. “What the hell happened in here?”

Bennie stuck his head in. “Damn Ace, I know Tonka didn’t do this.”

The first thing I did was check the PC and I could tell someone had tried to start it because a blue screen greeted me. “JR, come here please.”

JR wiggled in and saw the message. “Press any key Ace and it should boot up without a problem.”

I did like he asked and sure enough, I was in business. “JR, can you tell when someone tried to turn this on?”

“Sure,” JR answered then sat down and started typing.

“It looks like it was last night about 9:45.”

I looked up at Bennie and he closed his eyes. I had my answer and now I was livid. “Alright, everyone out while I change,” I said as people started leaving.

I quickly changed then went to see Gloria. As soon as I walked into the kitchen she had me in a motherly hug. “Señor Ace, it’s good to have you home. I’ll cook a special meal in your honor.”

Those words never sounded so good to me. “Thank you Gloria but you don’t need to go all out.”

“As you wish Señor Ace; I know just what to make for you.”

When Bennie and I came out of the kitchen, Ben was in the dining room. “Welcome home Ace.” He said smiling at me.

I fixed myself a cup of coffee then sat down. “May I have a few minutes Sir?”

“Sure, what’s on your mind?”

“I’m afraid your mother has been snooping.” I said

“Please explain,” Ben replied.

“It seems someone tried to start the PC in my room then quickly shut it down. JR said it happened around 9:45 last night.”

Bennie was sitting beside me and I could tell he wanted to speak but he just sat there while Ben thought. “Ace, I know yours and Bennie’s room are off limits to everyone except certain people.”

“That’s right Sir and I won’t tolerate anyone coming in and messing with that computer. Did you have a talk with Brenda?”

“No I haven’t. When Bennie told me what happened last night, I didn’t have a chance to answer him as he was quite upset.”

“And rightly so Ben,” I replied. “If we’d been together I don’t know what I would have done but I know the whole residence would have heard it.”

“I can imagine.” Ben answered. “Now, do you want to handle this or should I?”

“Sir, it might be best if you do it because I might totally lose it.”

“That wouldn’t be wise.” Bennie said patting my hand.

“I know love. That’s why I want your Dad to do it. Everything was fine until my computer was messed with.”

Just then I saw someone walk past and head towards the closest hallway. I got up and quickly went to see who it was. Bennie and Ben were hot on my heels. Bennie stuck his head into my room then shook it so I went into his.

I opened his door and there sitting on his bed was Brenda with his laptop. She looked up and saw us. “Bennie, did you leave your computer on?

He shook his head. “Mother, what is the meaning of this? Why are you messing with Bennie’s personal computer?”

“Excuse me,” She started but Ben interrupted her.

“Don’t take that tone with me.” Ben almost shouted.

“Don’t you yell at me.” Brenda countered trying to get past us but not succeeding.

“Brenda, you have been told these rooms are off limits to everyone but a select few people. Now, what are you doing in here? I said firmly.

“Ace, I have a right,” She started.

“Mother, this is MY HOME and you don’t have a right to go snooping in people’s bedrooms.”

“Is this how it is Benjamin?” She shot back.

“How would you like it if Bennie or I went rummaging through your bedroom?”

“I wouldn’t but I have nothing to hide.” She said accusingly.

“Just what the hell is that supposed to mean?” Bennie asked.

“I want to know what’s on this computer.” She said.

“Nothing that concerns you,” Bennie answered.

“Oh really, how about I be the judge of that,” Brenda shot out.

“Fine, if you can get in, go for it.” Bennie countered.

He walked over and turned it on. It booted up and there was a black window open with a box and a blinking curser. “Go on Gramma, it’s waiting for you.”

She looked at the screen. “What’s this?”

“You need a password.” Bennie answered.

“Well, enter it.” She replied.

“I’m not going into it, you are so you do it.”

Bennie came over by me then waited. Brenda just sat there knowing she couldn’t go any further. “Benjamin, tell him to enter the password.”

I knew that was futile so we just waited. “No Mother, I’ll not. I don’t even know his password.”

She looked up at me. “Ace, you do it then.”

I shook my head. “No ma’am, I’ll not do that.”

“WHAT, I ORDER YOU TO.” She screamed.

“Mother, that’s just enough.” Ben interrupted. “I think you’ve just overstayed your welcome.”

“Fine,” She stood up and again tried to get out of the room. “I have a right to know what he’s doing on his computer.”

“No you don’t,” Ben said. “I’m his father and only I have that right.”

Bennie looked up at Ben so I wrapped my arm around his shoulder and gave him a little hug.

“Then do it Benjamin.” She spat.

“Dad, you wouldn’t.” Bennie said.

“If it will end this, please son.”

Bennie stormed into the room. “FINE, Gramma I hate you for this.” Bennie said as he entered the code.

Once the computer was booted up, she tried to access files but Bennie had them hidden well. “You mean you have nothing on this?”

“What is it you’re looking for?” Bennie asked.

“Whatever you boys look at on these things,” She answered.

“You don’t think we’d leave stuff like that lying around just anywhere, do you?” Bennie countered.

“Well then, show me everything.”

“Dad, do I have to?”

“Not without a warrant,” I heard a voice say.

“And just who are you?” Brenda asked.

“That is Adam Graham; he is the acting US Attorney.” I answered.

“What’s going on?” Adam asked.

Bennie went up to him. “My Grandmother is being a nosy busybody. She wants me to show her everything I have on my computer.”

“What’s the problem Benjamin, do you have something on there you shouldn’t?”

“No, go and look for yourself.” Bennie shouted.

“I don’t know what I’m doing.” She said.

“That’s not my problem. I entered the password now look at it or I’ll shut it down.”

“Fine,” She said trying to navigate his computer.”

“I don’t understand this new program, explain it to me Bennie.”

“No ma’am, you’ll have to do that yourself. Also, if you try to go into a secured area, the computer will lock itself down and I will not open it.”

Bennie went over to Ben. “Dad, I can’t believe you made me do that. Whose side are you on?”

Adam was looking at Ben and I too was wondering why he made Bennie unlock his computer. “I’m on your side but I do wonder why the secrecy with the password.”

“Dad, you have a password on your computer so I did it too. If you want to remove yours, I’ll remove mine.”

“Son, the password is there for a reason.” Ben said.

“I understand that so the password on my computer is there for the same reason.”

“ARGH,” we heard as Bennie went over to the computer.

“I told you Grandmother, now, your looking is over.”

“I’m not done,” She said.

“Oh yes you are.” Ben said.

“Make him,” Brenda screamed.

“I’ll not do that.” Ben replied.

“Oh yes you will.” She screamed as she picked up the computer.

“Don’t you dare,” Bennie screamed.

“If you won’t open it, I’ll smash it.”

“Screw you,” Bennie screamed calling her bluff.

<SLAM>

“I told you Benjamin, open it or I’ll smash it.”

Bennie ran over to the broken machine. “You bitch, get out of here now.” She just stood there, “Tonka, here boy.”

Just then, he came into the room. “Get out or deal with him.”

Brenda stormed to the door and we moved out of the way.

I saw Bennie fighting back the tears as he picked up his totally trashed laptop. Ben looked at him. “How bad is it son?”

Bennie just glared at his father and didn’t answer him. I went over to Bennie and put my arm around his shoulder. “Answer him baby.”

The look Bennie gave me worried me. If he could have shot daggers from his eyes, I’d have been dead. “Why?

He took her side in this.”

He had a point and I couldn’t come up with a logical reason for what Ben did but I wasn’t a father. “I know love but he did ask you a reasonable question.”

He looked up to Ben. “It’s totaled.”

I had to think quickly. “Maybe not love.”

“Huh? Ace this is garbage now.”

“Not so fast love. I have an idea. Let me get things sorted then we’ll address this.”

Bennie was looking at me like I’d lost my mind. “Alright love, I’ll trust you here.”

I went over to Ben. “Sir, I think we need to talk but I have one other thing to do.”

Ben just nodded his head then I left the room. I headed down the hall then went to the Queen’s Bedroom. The door was wide open and I saw Brenda packing her things. I knocked and waited. She saw me standing there. “Yes Ace?”

I went in and sat down in a chair. “Brenda, what’s got into you? You’ve turned back into the nosey busybody that almost destroyed your relationship but now, I don’t know if there is anything left to save.”

“Ace, that’s my grandson. I love him so much you’ll never know.”

“I understand that Brenda but he’s also a young man who has a life of his own.”

“I know,” She started to say.

“Do you now?” I interrupted. “No one has the right to go through his private space except his father and you don’t fit that bill.”

“Ben had the chance.” She countered.

“Yes he did but he knew how far to push things.”

“He didn’t push it far enough.”

“According to whom?” I asked.

“Excuse me,” She started.

“That’s what I asked. Who says how far Ben should push things with Bennie?”

“Well, I should.” She answered.

“Why, what gives you that right? You’re not a parent here.”

“I’m his Grandmother.”

“Yes, but you don’t have the right to interfere with Ben’s raising of Bennie.”

“I see he’s letting Bennie do whatever he wants and he doesn’t set limits on him.”

“Oh,” I started. “He’s going off to college so tell me, how tightly should he control Bennie?”

“He should know everything that is going on in his life.”

“Listen to you.” I said. “You would push Bennie away from his father just to know everything Bennie does?”

“I have that,” She started again.

“No you don’t.” You don’t even have the right to come here and visit. This is Ben’s house right now and he says who may come here.”

“Now wait a minute.” She started.

“No Brenda, you wait. How would you like it if every aspect of your life was being dictated?”

“I wouldn’t.” She answered.

“Exactly, now look at what you’re doing. And don’t you dare say you have that right. You have no rights here. You are not the parent here and to try and force Ben into doing your dirty work doesn’t cut it. Now, just so you know, I will side with Bennie here.”

“I see,” She started. “It seems we have nothing left to discuss.”

I hated this. “If that’s how you want it to be but I will not force Bennie to have anything more to do with you.”

“Well, that’s his loss.” She threw back at me.

“No Grandmother, it’s your loss.” I heard a voice say then saw Bennie turn and walk away.

She started to go after him but I blocked her. “No, leave him alone.”

“He’s my grandson.” She said pushing her way past me.

I was on her heels as she headed for the bedrooms. I saw the door going to the rooms was closed so she wasn’t going to get past that. She tried to open it but it was locked. She stopped and glared at me. “Sorry, you’re not allowed in there.”

I wasn’t going to try and open it with her standing there so now it was a waiting game. She finally got the hint I wasn’t going to open the door for her so she returned to her room. As soon as she was gone, I used my keycard and opened the door then went to see Bennie. “I suppose you were taking her side.”

“You know me better than that love.” I answered.

“Do I?” He started.

“You should.”

“Why,” He tossed back.

“Because I love you and when you’re right, I’ll always back you.”

I held my arms out to him and he came over and melted into them. “I love you too baby.”

A minute later, there was a loud banging on the entrance door. “Benjamin Jacobs, open this door immediately.”

Ben was in the dining room when he heard the noise. He walked out and saw Brenda. “What the hell is going on?”

“Open that door.” She shouted.

“Have you lost the ability to read?” Ben asked.

“You heard me.” She screamed.

“You’re in MY HOME mother so you don’t give me orders.” Ben said as she turned around and started banging on the door again.

Meanwhile Bennie was getting tired of the racket going on outside. He stormed out of his room and yanked the door open. “What the hell is with you? Now I see where Carla gets her nastiness from.”

She tried to push by Bennie and he wasn’t in the mood for it. He took her arm and moved her against the wall. “Let go of me this instant.”

I came out and saw the goings on. “Brenda what the hell are you doing?”

“Tell him to let me go this instant.” She screamed.

“Not until you act like you have some common sense.”

“I’ll have your job for this.” She screamed as she wiggled trying to get away.

‘Oh the times I’ve heard that,’ I thought.

“Lady, have you lost your mind?” I asked.

“Keep it up.” She screamed.

Just then Dusty walked up. “What’s the noise?”

Ben looked at his agent in charge. “Dusty, can you handle this?”

“Yes Sir,” He replied. “How should I handle it?”

“She’s gone off the deep end.”

“Should I Baker Act her?” Dusty asked.

“I’ll leave that up to your discretion.” Ben replied.

Dusty came inside and took hold of Brenda's arm from Bennie. “Ms. Schultz, calm down this minute or I will have no choice but to . . . .”

“I am calm. These people have locked doors and are refusing me from entering.”

“Ma’am this area is off limits to everyone except to a select few individuals.”

“I have a right” She started.

“Ma’am, you are a guest here in the White House and as such you may only go into open areas.”

“I have a right to go into my grandson’s room.”

“No ma’am you don’t and if you persist in making a scene, I will not hesitate to escort you out of here.”

“Fine, let me go.”

Dusty held on to her then led her out of the hall. I walked over to them. “Dusty, her things are packed and she has a car outside.”

“Ace, can you help me?” Dusty asked.

“Sure, what do you need?”

“Get her bags and bring them to the elevator.”

“Right away,” I said as I headed for her bedroom.

I got her bags and carried them to the elevator. I rang for it then we took Brenda downstairs. I called and had a car come so he could escort her to the gate. After getting her bags in the trunk, Dusty let her go. As soon as he did she turned around and stared at me. “Is this how it’s going to be Agent Mason?”

“Ma’am you brought this on yourself. Now we’re going to end it.”

“We’ll see about his. You’ll be hearing from my attorney.”

“Ma’am, that would just cost you a lot of money and get you nowhere. This is federal property and we have the right to control who goes where and when.”

“Oh, we’ll just see about that.” She screamed as she got into her car and slammed the door.

She started her car and backed up not really watching what she was doing. She almost hit the cruiser waiting for her then she took off heading for the gate. Dusty called the guard. “Officer, this is Agent Moore, Ms. Schultz is not to be allowed on the White House grounds until further notice.”

“Yes Agent Moore.” The guard replied then Dusty ended the call.

I looked at my friend. “Maybe now, I’ll have some peace and quiet.”

I was about to return to the residence when I felt arms around my waist. “Is she gone now?”

I kissed him on the cheek. “Yes she is love and she won’t be allowed back onto the grounds.”

The three of us returned to the residence. Ben was sitting in the living room lost in thought with Chris holding him. Bennie went over to his dad and sat beside him. “I’m so sorry son.” Ben said softly taking Bennie’s hand.

“Why Dad?” Bennie asked.

“I never thought you’d have something to hide.” Ben said.

“Dad, I don’t but darn it, I’ll not have someone going poking around on my computer.”

“Then why the password?” Ben asked.

“Why is your computer pass worded?”

Ben looked at him. “I think you know the answer to that.”

“I do so if it’s good enough for you then I did it too. If my laptop is ever stolen, I’ll be damned if someone will just walk in and see everything that’s on it.”

“So you have things that are private, is that it?”

“In a sense, I do but when I’m at Georgetown, my work will be totally protected. I’ll not have some jerk try to steal it.”

“I can’t blame you there love.” I said. “Ben, what’s brought all this on?”

Bennie looked at Ben and my question even had Chris’s attention. “Yeah, dad what got into gramma? It’s like she thinks I look at porn or something.”

Chris looked at Bennie as did Ben. “Well, do you?”

“Dad,” Bennie almost shouted. “It’s all out there.”

“I’m well aware of that son.” Ben replied. “So I guess I’m asking if you’ve ever seen it.”

“Dad, I have a lover. What can a movie do when I have Ace?”

Ben started to say something when Chris stopped him. “He has you there darling.”

Ben turned red at Chris’s statement. “You’re right son.” Ben said reaching out for Bennie. “I’m sorry I questioned you.”

“That hurt worse than getting kicked in the nuts.” Bennie tossed back.

Ben caressed Bennie’s hair while I rubbed his back. I saw Ben looking at me so I thought it best to give him Brenda’s parting shot. “Sir, your mother -in-law said she was going to talk to a lawyer.”

Ben’s eyes changed. “About what?”

“I haven’t a clue. She was still ranting about not being allowed in Bennie’s room. Even Dusty tried to explain it but she wouldn’t hear it.”

“What’s gotten into that woman?” Ben asked rubbing his head.

“I wish I knew Sir but I wouldn’t worry about it.”

“You’re right Ace, any suit she could try to bring wouldn’t have merit.”

Bennie let Ben go then looked up at me. “How are you feeling love with all this excitement?”

“Surprisingly well baby. I’ve not let myself get upset so my blood pressure would go up.”

When Bennie heard that, he took off back to his room. I was about to follow him when Ben tapped me on the arm. “Ace, don’t forget, next week you leave on your vacation.”

“So soon?” I asked.

Ben giggled. “Bennie’s been out of school almost two months now.”

“Gee, time flies when you’re having fun.”

“Sir, can you do a letter giving Bennie permission to take the cruise with me?”

“Why, won’t the letter you already have suffice?”

“I don’t know and I’m not about to fight with them only to have our tickets cancelled.”

“Alright, I’ll get that for you.”

I’ll contact the Baltimore office and make arrangements to have a vehicle here so we can head right to the pier.”

“How long with the drive take?” Ben asked.

“When I looked online, it said it should take about an hour to get to the pier. Boarding starts at noon so we’d have to leave here about 11:30.”

“You know Tonka is going to miss you both, don’t you?”

“I know sir; can you ask Johnny to spend some time with him so he won’t feel neglected?”

“I will talk to him.” Ben said.

“Thanks Sir.” I replied then headed down to the bedroom.

To be continued...
