Chapter 14: Dayton’s Day.
Almost forty-five minutes early, Dayton arrived at the newest site of the house that the company he worked for, ‘New Life Contractors,’ was building. On the way to work he purchased a coffee at a small local store and then sat in his car waiting for the tradesmen to arrive. He stared at the most beautiful sunrise, a deep pink that transformed into a dark red, before it eventually faded into the following magnificent blue.
For a while, Dayton kept trying to remember something he had learned as a boy. When he finally recalled the verse, he immediately said it out loud, “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight, red sky in the morning, sailor’s warning.”
Dayton did not care about how the weather would play out over the day. All he really cared about was getting home to Lance that afternoon and telling him how he felt. However, suddenly the meaning of the little verse transformed and became a prophetic warning, suggesting his hopes might be dashed.
In spite of his deepest hopes regarding Lance, the pessimistic attitudes that had filled his mind on awakening that morning, continued to swarm like a plague of locusts diving onto a crop. He was inundated by random thoughts, like how Lance had gone to bed early, stopping him from telling Lance how he felt. He was concerned about how Lance had written in the journal that he had to move on and forget about him. There was the reoccurring thought that Heidi was an issue, which he feared Lance would not be able to dismiss. He wondered if all the negative feelings and thoughts were occurring as a cautionary tale. Perhaps the dark red sunrise, along with the recollection of the little verse, were meant to change his decision and halt the sequence of events he was so determined to initiate. He wondered if Lance coming into his life had been just part of a convergence of events and simply coincidence.
Dayton knew deep down there had always been a vague hope, a wish for something special with the handsome stranger who had offered him a roof over his head. Though everything was completely different, there was a sense of the similar to what had occurred with Jamey. Still, he wondered if he followed his desire, if it would contaminate and degrade the power and the integrity of the friendship with Lance, which had become the most important thing in his life.
Once again the words he discovered on Lance’s computer rushed into his mind. Lance was in love with him and he knew that he loved Lance as well. The recollection of those four words, ‘I love you, Dayton,’ were so powerful that all Dayton’s doubts died an immediate death. He made an instant decision that as much as he wanted to retain the friendship, he wanted so much more with Lance.
Dayton smiled a very bright smile that was brimming with hope once again. “I’ll take the chance,” he thought. A moment later he saw the site foreman pulling to the curb in front of his car. Dayton got out of his car and walked to greet the other man.
The morning flew by swiftly as a small group of men began the new job while the other regular tradesmen that worked with them, continued another house in another location, which had also been started the week before. The foundation of this house, though, had already been laid the previous week and so today would be the beginning of the frame. It was a very small property and the house was to be little more than the size of a small, two-bedroom cottage. The owner was making the best of the limited space but the whys and wherefores were of no consequence to the builders. They were simply there to do their jobs, get paid and then move onto the next job, whatever it would be.
The morning seemed to go by in the blink of an eye and no sooner had lunch arrived, it had passed by as well. From about nine o’clock the weather had begun to heat up and by one o’clock it was stifling. During a brief period when there was nothing specific he had to do, Dayton stood and watched as the builders did their thing.
During that seeming still, Dayton began to look at one of the men. The man was a carpenter of twenty-nine, a large man named Jake, who was physically impressive in a powerhouse kind of way. He was also an incredibly handsome man. Though Dayton had noticed him often, as Jake took a break, dragged off his shirt and began to guzzle from a bottle of water, for the first time with any degree of conscious thought, Dayton stared at the deeply tanned chest and the strong shoulders and arms.
Jake lowered the bottle from his lips and as he did, he glanced around until his eyes fell upon Dayton’s eyes gazing at him. He smiled across the short distance, put the bottle down and then turned and went back to work.
The revelation was instant for Dayton. Only the night before he had said the words that confirmed he finally knew he was gay. Now, less than a day later, he was looking at another man and feeling the swelling in his shorts. Dayton thought as his eyes followed the shirtless man, how delicious it would be to run his fingers over that skin and to wrap his arms around that body. He also discovered he was wondering about what was hidden beneath Jake’s shorts.
Dayton considered how he had placed limitations upon what he had been prepared to do with Jamey. He had kissed him and had sex with him but his mouth had never gone below his hips. Such a simple thought, as his eyes licked at Jake’s body, suddenly made him hard. He now knew he wanted to do it all. He wanted to go all the way and truly experience the sexual diversity of a gay man.
A momentary yet curious expression crossed Dayton’s face. It felt so strange to be thinking and feeling things he never had before. He knew instantly it was because he had admitted and accepted who he was the previous night, which was now giving him a type of permission to be the man he really was. In that moment he imagined Jake being naked and he imagined taking him into his mouth. He knew these were purely sexual thoughts and nothing like the overall desires he held with hope for he and Lance but even so, he could not dismiss the heat that came from his new eyes as he looked at Jake.
Jake turned and looked again, only to discover Dayton still looking at him. Dayton saw the curious look in Jake’s eyes and he wondered if Jake could somehow know what was going on in his mind. Regardless, Dayton felt the heat of embarrassment flush into his face and he dropped his eyes and turned away.
Walking across the yard to another area of the small site, Dayton began moving the delivered materials closer to where the men were working. It was all about swifter access when needed. Dayton was trying to keep busy in an attempt to quiet his mind. The last thing he needed was any unwanted questions. He felt he was not quite ready to come out to others when he had only just come out to himself.
As Dayton began shifting some large beams of wood, his thoughts returned to Lance. Once again he wondered about the afternoon to come and he hoped beyond hope that his conversation with Lance, would eventuate the way he wanted it to. In an uncontrolled moment of pure fantasy, Dayton pictured Lance lying in his bed. It was the exact picture he had seen on the Saturday before Kat arrived to look at the house. He imagined his hand sliding over Lance’s body and he also imagined lowering the sheet, to see what he was now wondering about from that morning two weeks before.
“Dayton, are you okay?”
Dayton jumped as his mind came shooting back to reality, as a consequence of the touch of the hand on his shoulder and the sound of the deep, male voice.
In combination with his jerking reaction, Dayton said, “What?”
“You’ve been standing still and staring into space for the last couple of minutes and I was wondering if you were all right,” Jake explained.
Dayton, now looking like cornered prey, looked deep into the dark green eyes before he lowered his own and took in the sight of the deeply tanned, milk chocolate skin, wrapped tautly around and enormous frame. Dayton’s cock was already hard from his thoughts of Lance and Jake’s body only made him harder.
“Um, yeah, I’m fine. Sorry, I just got caught up in my thoughts. Sorry, I’ll get back to work,” he replied.
Jake squeezed the shoulder he was still holding and said, “Dayton, I’m not your boss and it’s okay. I just wanted to make sure there was no problem and now that I know there’s not, I don’t have to worry.”
Dayton queried, “Worry?”
“Well, you’ve been working with us for about four months now and you’re such a hard worker and I’ve never seen you get distracted like this before. Anyway, while we’re on the subject, how are things going?”
“Great, Jake. Everything’s really good. Why? Has someone complained about me?”
Jake laughed in an easy but amused way and then said, “No, not at all. It’s just that not many guys stay in the position you’re employed in, unless they’re apprentices. Usually the guys like you do it for a couple of months for extra money or maybe until they get a better job. You however, you do this job with such pride and with so much effort, well, I guess it’s a little surprising.”
“Well, if I had my way I’d be doing your job, Jake. I just need to get around to finding a college or somewhere where I can learn to become more than I am at the moment. I was going to do it back in Portland but things happened and I never got around to it,” Dayton explained.
Jake asked inquisitively, “You want to become a tradesman?”
“Yeah, absolutely,” Dayton said.
“Well, there are several different courses depending on exactly what you want to do and there are several different places you can do them. I can’t tell you off the top of my head but I’ll get you the information you want and give it to you tomorrow,” Jake offered.
“Really? Thank you, so much. That would be great, Jake.”
“It’s not a problem, Dayton. Anyway, thanks for the sidetrack,” Jake said.
Dayton questioned, “Sidetrack?”
“Oh, well, it’s just that it’s so fucking hot and coming over here to check on you gave me the few minutes break I really needed. I can’t wait for this day to be over,” Jake explained.
“Oh. Yeah, it is really hot. There hasn’t been a day this hot since I arrived in San Diego. I wish I could go for a swim,” Dayton said.
Jake wiped his fingers over his huge chest, causing a wave of sweat to converge into a pool of water and splash to the ground. He watched as Dayton stared at his chest and then he said, “Good idea. I wouldn’t mind stripping off all of my clothes and diving into the ocean right beside you.”
Dayton’s head lifted swiftly and as he looked at Jake, he saw the smile that was not just a smile. It was so completely inviting and he felt his cock grow even harder.
Embarrassed, Dayton said, “Well, I guess we should get back to work.”
Jake’s expression was curious for a moment and then he gave a natural smile and agreed. He turned and began to walk away but as Dayton watched him, he turned back and said, “Dayton, maybe you and I could get a drink together sometime?”
Dayton looked at the hot, older man and said, “Sure,” before he swiftly turned away.
Dayton lifted another beam of wood onto his shoulder and as he began to walk, he felt certain Jake had just asked him out. Dayton was a little surprised that the idea of spending time with Jake was appealing, however, he also thought that if it were not for how he felt about Lance, he would have suggested to Jake that they go out for drinks that night. Since work had begun that morning, Jake had transformed from being just a man he worked with, to being one of the hottest men he had ever seen in his life. He also thought the idea of getting naked with Jake would be hot.
Only the night before, Dayton had admitted and accepted he was gay and already he was looking at men in a way he never had. As he lowered the wood into it’s new position, he turned and watched Jake returning to where he had been working earlier. He smiled and he felt certain Jake was gay as well. He felt good while considering someone else was attracted to him and he was also put at ease, by the thought that there was another gay man working for the company. He wondered if they could become friends. His mind settled and he returned to the tasks he was involved in.
The weather reached almost unbearable proportions by two-thirty. It was uncomfortably hot and with every man wishing the day would come to an end, when the foreman noticed the dark, rolling clouds of a huge storm on approach, he called day’s end. It was a cautionary decision as it looked like it might be a large electrical storm.
At three-fifteen the men had completed whatever they were doing and soon after they all began to leave. Dayton was expected to do the final clean up in preparation for the following day. Fifteen minutes later, not only was he alone but he was standing beneath dark, grayish-green, threatening skies, all traces of blue now a distant memory.
The brightness of the day was gone and the roiling clouds looked like a gaseous monster about to swoop down and devour the world. He walked to the front of the property, pulled the temporary gate closed and as he turned toward the street, a small piece of ice hit the side of his head. It did not hurt him but it shocked him and then he realized it was beginning to hail. Dayton was sprinting seconds later, dragging his keys from his pocket before he reached his car.
As Dayton drove home he was forced to stop. The storm was enormous and though the hail was not too large, it was dense and seemingly relentless. He pulled into a gas station to get his car away from the damaging ice. The hail ended quickly enough but the rain that followed was driving hard and the humidity was overwhelming. The heat of the day remained in spite of the cold ice and water. If it were going to cool down, it would probably take a few hours. When the rain finally started to ease and then stopped, all that was left was a hot and sticky, steamy city.
Dayton started his car and left the gas station, as he once again continued his journey home. As he drove, irrespective of knowing Lance was in love with him and wanted him, he again let pessimism creep into his thoughts. The time he had been begging to arrive was getting uncomfortably closer and suddenly his whole body was filling with apprehension. He recalled thinking that morning that the little verse about the weather might have been a cautionary tale. Now, an incredible storm had halted his reaching home. He wondered if there really was something to his thoughts.
“No. You’re just feeling uncomfortable and uncertain. Stop making excuses and do what you need to do,” he thought.
Regardless of his rationalization and the assertiveness of his decision, waves of apprehension began to swamp him. He drove on, though, ignoring his fear, struggling with the desire and uncertainty that were his passengers.
