Chapter 27
Leave, If You’re Not Happy
I could hardly wait for Bill to get home so I could tell him what had happened. I looked at the clock and it was already nine o’clock and he had said he was going to be home by nine, I went to check on the boys the twins were softly snoring and I kissed them and they didn’t move. I stood and looked at them and thought to myself, ‘We’re so lucky.’
I went to Darrin and David’s room and the scene was entirely different. David was lying there playing with his penis. Darrin and Kent were entangled together sleeping, or so I thought. David looked at me and whispered, “Daddy, why was Grandpa Witmer here tonight?”
I took a deep breath, “David, he is concerned about all of our well being, I’ll explain tomorrow, after I talk to Daddy Bill. Right now, I’m trying to understand what is happening.”
David sat up, “Daddy, please don’t let anything bad happen to any of us again. We’re happy here with you and Daddy Bill. Grandma Archer is always here for us.”
I hugged and kissed David and whispered, “Son, we need to get some lubricant so you don’t rub the skin on your penis so much that it gets sore.”
David leaned against me, “Dad, I can’t believe you said that to me. How many dads would say something like that?”
“David, go to sleep before we wake your brother and Kent.”
Darrin whispered so we could hear, “I’m already awake. Who can sleep when David is always playing with his penis and gasping as if he needed some air.”
I started to laugh, “Darrin, you are evil.”
He challenged me, “Dad, remember, I’m the only one of us who has been spanked by an angel. Dad, you will tell us why Granddad Witmer was here tonight, won’t you?”
“Guys, go to sleep. I’m going to go wait for Daddy Bill. It's almost ten o’clock and you should be asleep.”
Kent sat up, “Yeah, Mr. Phillips. Why are you disturbing us?”
Talk about a put down. I hugged and kissed the three boys and went downstairs to wait for Bill. I mean after all, he did promise me to show me how we were going to lose the rest of our innocence.
Mother Archer arrived about ten fifteen. “Les, I’m surprised that you’re still up.”
“I wouldn’t be, if your wayward son would get home. I can’t imagine what kind of church meeting could last for more than three hours.”
Mom looked at me, “Les, there are some church members who are against everything. They really should resign their membership and go to a church where their selfish views are accepted. I don’t know what the meeting tonight was about, but please be very gentle with Bill when he gets home because he may explode. I’m going to bed.”
I was just about asleep in my recliner when I heard the garage door open and someone coming in the mud room door and slamming it. I decided to wait and see what would happen. I heard movement in the kitchen and went to see what was happening. Bill was sitting at the table with a can of beer. I walked up to him but he was so deep in thought that he didn’t hear me.
I leaned down and whispered, “I thought you were going to show me how to get rid of the rest of our innocence tonight.”
Bill turned and around and hugged me, “Les, I won’t be able to do that tonight, because I’m so angry that I would probably hurt you, and I certainly don’t want to do that.”
I went to the refrigerator and got a beer for myself, “Come with me, big fellow, I have some exciting news to tell you, after you tell me what happened at the meeting that has you so upset.”
I made sure the house was secure and we took our beers to our bedroom. We sat down on the settee and Bill started, “That son of biscuit, Mr. Miller, was there tonight, complaining about everything. He brought along his sidekick Mr. Westerly. This was a meeting of the Mission Committee, and Mr. Miller started to complain about the effort that the church was making to provide food to the needy at the Good Will mission, each month.”
“Fortunately, George Madsen was there. He stood and walked over to the two gentlemen. ‘For your information, the money to provide the cost of those meals has cost this congregation nothing but what they volunteered to donate. My wife and I have subsidized the costs, and there is actually an excess in the coffers because of the way the young people have managed the food purchasing.’”
“Mr. Westerly wasn’t satisfied, ‘Well, why aren’t you helping to pay for the needs of Congregation, rather than taking care of all of those ingrates?’”
“Mr. Madsen exploded, ‘Look, you ignoramuses, I happen to be Chairman of the Finance committee, and I happen to know that the meager amounts that the two of you give to the well being of the church isn’t even one percent of what you could give. I wouldn’t call a contribution of $120.00 a year very Christian like. For your information, and I’m not bragging, my wife and I gave more than $12,000.00 to this church, last year. I suggest you sit down and shut up or get out. We don’t need any more complainers in this church.’”
“Father Roberts tried to diffuse the tension of the situation, but Mr. Miller decided to take one last parting shot. He stood, ‘The idea of letting a little kid come to the pulpit and make a spectacle of himself and saying a stupid prayer and then singing a Christmas song was ridiculous. It was making a mockery of everything that we believe in.’”
“Father Roberts stood, ‘Mr. Miller and Mr. Westerly, I will personally make sure that your names are deleted from the membership roles of this church immediately. What Darrin did on Sunday was truly inspirational. If you can’t appreciate it, then you have no business being a member of this congregation. As far as what the young people are doing at the Good Will Mission, that has done more to bring more new members to us than all of the complaining and bellyaching that the two of you have been doing. I move this meeting be adjourned.’”
“George
Degan who is the committee chairman announced, ‘It has been moved that this
meeting be adjourned. Is there a second?’
Mrs. Cramer who is on the committee raised her hand and announced, ‘I second the
motion and I concur with Father Roberts that Mr. Miller’s and Mr. Westerly’s
names should be stricken from the roles of this church until such time as they
begin to act like Christians.’”
“George was so calm, ‘It has been moved and seconded that the meeting be closed.’ Mr. Miller stood, ‘You can’t close the meeting. I have every right to speak my mind.’”
“George shook his head no, ‘Mr. Miller, you are not and have never been a member of the Mission Committee, that I know of, so you are a guest. Will all of the members who are present signify that the meeting be closed by raising their right hands?’”
“George looked around the room and announced, ‘The meeting is adjourned by a unanimous vote of the committee members who are present. The meeting is adjourned.’”
“Mr. Miller and Mr. Westerly followed me to my car and pushed me against my car. Mr. Miller shouted, ‘Archer, this is all your doing.’”
“George Degan and George Madsen came up behind the two men and challenged them, ‘Father Archer, we’ll testify that we saw these two men assault you. Let us know when the hearing is.’ The two persons made a hurried exit. Now what’s your news?”
I looked at Bill, “I’ll tell you after you have had time to chill for a while. Let’s go take a shower and get ready for bed and then I will tell you about my evening which wasn’t nearly so confrontational as yours.”
After we took a leisurely shower, I was holding Bill as we were lying in bed. I started to tell him about my evening. When I told him about the cabin/lodge he was almost laughing. When I told him about the four certified checks made out to the boys, he sat up. “Les, our boys are going to have more money than we do and they aren’t even teenagers yet.”
Bill fell back against the pillow, “Les, I’m off on Saturday, why don’t we go see what this cabin/lodge that we might be living in looks like, in case your wicked mother-in-law gets released.”
Bill looked up at me, “Honestly, my stud Les, I can’t leave you alone for a minute, or you get us in all sorts of trouble. Let’s go to sleep. My mind can’t stand any more excitement today.”
When Bill and I woke up, it was just beginning to get light. We put on some sweat clothes and went running. When we got back to the house, I woke David, Darrin and Kent, and Bill went to wake Denny and Danny. We weren’t the most welcomed of visitors, but the boys got up.
As the boys were leaving for school, David reminded me, “Dad, you promised that you would tell us why Granddad Witmer was here last night.”
“I’ll tell you when we get home tonight, I promise.”
It was just about lunch time when Linda came in, “Doctor Anderson is on the line.”
I picked up the phone, “Hi Roy, what’s up?”
“Shay said yes. Would you and the boys be available the week after next to be at the wedding? I would very much like Darrin to be my attendant.”
“Roy, we
will be available, but as far as Darrin being you best man or attendant, you
need to talk to him.”
Roy wasn’t finished, “Les, do you think Father Bill would officiate at the
wedding?”
“Roy, call Bill and talk to him. I know he is going to be off on Saturday of this week, but I have no idea what his schedule is for next week.”
“Okay, talk to you later and thanks for taking care of Kent last night.”
I had just hung up when Linda brought me an envelope marked PERSONAL.
I opened it and two keys tumbled out with what looked like a map and a note. I picked up the note and started to read it,
Les,
I forgot to give you the keys to the lodge last night. Here is a map in case you have time to check it out before I talk to you. Hope my visit last night didn’t cause you too much stress.
W.
After lunch I called Linda into my office, “Linda, please change all my appointments that are schedule from three o’clock on. I have some things that I need to do with my sons.”
Linda went to take care of my request and I called the boys’ school and asked the secretary or whoever answered to advise my sons that I would be picking them up when they were dismissed.”
I went and got the van and the five boys came and climbed into the van. ‘How am I going to explain what is happening to Kent?’
I shouldn’t have worried. Darrin explained, “Dad, I figured that since Kent was going to help mow lawns after we do whatever you want us to do, he’ll already be with us and that way we’ll save a lot of time since his old clothes are already at our house from yesterday.”
Fortunately, I had spoken to people at the bank and had made an appointment for us. I went up to the lady at the reception desk, “I believe that we have an appointment with Mr. O’Brien.”
The young woman looked at me, “If you are Mr. Phillips, I believe you are correct. He is expecting you. Let me show you handsome gentlemen to his office.”
When we walked into the office, I recognized the gentleman as one of my clients. I stuck out my hand, “Jason, thanks for seeing us on such short notice.”
Jason shook my hand, “Les, who are all these handsome gentlemen with you?”
I introduced my four sons and turned to Kent, “We brought along our own auditor to make sure you don’t take advantage of us. This is Kent Dillon.”
The look on Kent’s face was priceless.
Jason was taken aback, “So you’re the Kent Dillon who is going to be the son to Doctor Roy Anderson and his new wife, Shay. Good, I have some papers that I need you to sign, while you’re here.”
The look on Kent’s face changed entirely, “Mr. O’Brien, I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”
Jason looked perplexed, “I thought you knew that your Mother was planning to marry Doctor Anderson. They were in here this morning and opened an investment account for you, just like David, Darrin, Danny and Deny are opening.”
Kent started to cry, “Dad Les, why didn’t you tell me?”
I hugged Kent, “I didn’t know until this morning that your Mother and Doctor Anderson were planning to get married, and I thought it would be best if your Mother and Father were to be the ones to tell you.”
I held Kent as I handed the four boys their checks, “Here, have Mr. O’Brien show you what to do, so you can open your accounts.”
After the five boys had signed all of the paperwork Denny looked at Mr. O’Brien. “Sir, why did we do all of this for a piece of paper?”
Jason came around the desk and hugged Denny, “You’re still young yet, but when you get to be a teenager, and more importantly, a college student, I am pretty sure that you will very much appreciate what happened today. You are so lucky to have people who care about you.”
That seemed to placate the boys.
After Kent signed some papers, we started to the house, and I couldn’t hear what the boys were saying
When we got to the house, the boys changed their clothes and were out the door in a flash, because they had money to make. They didn’t even stop for a snack.
When Bill arrived, I started to tell him and Mom Archer about the experience at the bank, but we were interrupted by Darrin and Kent. “Grandma, we came to get the things for Grandma Hattie. The other three boys will be here shortly.”
The two boys took the baskets across the street and in the meantime, Roy had arrived to pick up Kent. I explained to Roy what had happened at the bank and he expressed his concern, “This is not a good beginning for Kent and me. I’ll just have to make it right.”
When Kent came in and saw Roy, he went and stood in front of him, “Mr. Roy, if you’re going to be my Dad, please tell me what’s happening before a stranger tells me. I’m glad that you are going to be my Dad, but please don’t surprise me like that anymore.”
Roy hugged Kent, “If you’re going to be my son, then we must be open and tell each other everything from now on, even if it is bad sometimes. Now, get your things. We’ll go grab some food since your Mother has to work until nine.”
Mrs. Archer objected, “We have plenty to eat, so both of you sit your butts down at the table right now, while we bring the food.”
While we were eating, I looked at the boys, “How much schoolwork do you have tonight?”
The boys indicated that they had none, so I suggested, “After we get the dishes done, I would like for us all to go see a property I bought, and see what we can do with it. Mom and Dr. Jake, why don’t you go with us and give us your evaluation. Don’t worry we’ll be back before Mrs. Dillon returns from work.”
Kent looked at Roy, “Dad, I think he means Mrs. Anderson.”
To be continued...
Editor's Notes: I strongly suspect that he does indeed mean Mrs. Anderson. That was really great that those two found each other and that Kent now has a really nice dad of his own. It is going to be interesting to see just what this cabin is going to be like. I do have to wonder why it would be any safer for them to be at the cabin/lodge than being at home. I mean, doesn't the bitch have any clue that the cabin exists? That wasn't really very clearly stated. Besides, the boys are going to be at school during the day, She could show up at the school and try to hurt them. She is a very mean wicked woman, after all. I'm afraid that I haven't grown very fond of her.
I think it would be very nice if there were another chapter available very very soon, don't you?
