Chapter 25
New Phenomena
Beau woke up early and put Clay in bed with Jason who pulled him close.
Beau put on his running shorts and waited to see if anyone showed up. He was surprised since it was Sunday when David and Boris pulled up with the three oldest Leavitt boys and Tyler, Kevin and Spencer arrived.
Beau led everyone on a short leisurely run. When they got back, Judge Leavitt came over with a tray of orange juice and paper cups. Beau glared at her, “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you? You like seeing your youngest son and his stud friends running around almost naked.”
“Yep, I never thought I’d see this day.” Judge Leavitt said, as the younger Leavitt boys’ father drove up. Everyone took off and Beau went into the house and took coffee to his Dads. Since it was Sunday, there was no hurry since they were planning to go to the second service. He lay down on the sofa and was reading and when Josh came down, Beau was sound asleep.
Josh got a light blanket and covered him. Ben had warned the other two boys to be very quiet. Everyone except Beau ate and went to church. Beau woke up with a start and when he looked at his watch, he walked through the shower and was ready in five minutes. He took off on his bicycle.
When he arrived at the church, the service had already started so he just slipped in the back pew so no one knew that he was there.
The service was ending and Beau thought he was home free. Father Gilbert came forward and said, “I have a special request from some visitors who have asked that Beau Benson sing the 23rd Psalm and The Lord’s Prayer as a final tribute to their son Brent.”
Beau went forward and took the microphone and said, “I’d like all of Brent’s team mates who are here to come and join me. I don’t think I can do this by myself. Eight young men including Tommy, Berto, Kenny, Drew, Sammy, David, Bobby T. and another young man I didn’t know went forward. They stood around Beau but did not join Beau as he sang. They all had tears in their eyes. When he finished, Beau left without a word.
No one saw where he went and everyone was waiting for him to come out. Unbeknownst to everyone, he had slipped out a side door and took off on his bicycle. After he couldn’t be found, Spencer asked, “Where is the nearest pond or lake?”
Mrs. Tillison said, “If someone will drive me, I’ll show you.”
Spencer said, “Jeff, please take Mrs. Tillison and me to the water. Everyone else go home. Beau’s in desperate need of being recharged. Did he eat anything this morning? You better have plenty ready for him when he comes home.”
They went to a small lake and Beau was indeed sitting on the grass just looking at the water. It was apparent that he had been crying. Spencer popped out.
He quietly went and sat down beside Beau and put his arms around him and said, “Beau, let it go. I’m here for you. You’re always trying to do everything for everyone, so now it is my turn to do something for you. Just tell me what has you so upset.”
Beau put his arms around Spencer and started to sob again. Spencer looked at Jeff and Mrs. T. and signaled for them to go. When Beau settled down he told Spencer why Clay was at their house. He said that singing at the funeral on Friday was about the hardest thing he had ever done and then when he was bushwhacked this morning, he just lost it. He also explained about what he thought was happening to Mrs. Gleason, but had no idea how to fix the problem.
They lay on the grass and just talked until they both finally realized that they were starving.
Jeff had brought Mrs. T. to our house and she had tears in her eyes. This was a new phenomenon that I had never seen.
She definitely was upset. “Jack, fix me a triple Scotch on the rocks. Call Josh and tell him to take Beau back to the home. He’s tearing me apart. No one does this to me.”
At Josh and Ben’s house, Jason and Clay were beside themselves. Clay asked, “Where is Beau? Why isn’t he here?”
Everyone, who knew what had happened, had started to assemble at Josh and Ben’s house. Everyone was just sitting around looking at each other not knowing what to do. We all knew that no news was good news. It was a little after 1:30 when Beau came pedaling into the driveway with Spencer on the seat wearing Beau’s helmet.
They went straight to the kitchen and found the sandwiches and fruit that were waiting for them. They sat down and started to eat while everyone else started to swim. No one mentioned that they were late. When they came out to the pool area, Jason said, “You two took so long to get here that I had to get false teeth.” He pulled a set of fake teeth out of his mouth. Beau went to grab Jason and Clay blew the whistle. “Benson, you know better. Sit down and chill out. Better yet, go get your swim suit on so you can get all the germs off of you; you too Spencer.”
The two guys left and came out in swim suits. Everyone who had not seen Beau and Spencer since they had been back were ogling them. They dove in the pool and started to swim. They looked like an aquatic team. They were so smooth and fluid. When they crawled out, Beau held Spencer and said, “Thanks for being a special friend.”
Beau was overtaken by Clay and the other five year olds. “Beau, you said you would teach us how to do a flip turn.”
“Okay, but it’s not easy. Let’s get some of the other guys and we will teach you how they’re done. Come on Kenny, Jeremy, Spencer, Denny and Corky. We will each take one of the guys. Help them a couple of times and then have them practice. Guys, you don’t learn to do flip turns. You have to keep practicing and you will be able to tell when you do a good one. Beau had them practice for a few minutes and then he said, “Okay men. Line up here and swim across and back and see if you can do a flip turn.”
Beau blew his whistle and they dove in and started. They all struggled but tried to do a flip turn. When they got out Beau said, “I declare it a six way tie.”
Beau looked at the clock and said, “Pool is closed until after dinner. We will have it open again from 7:00 to 8:00.”
People dispersed, leaving only Mrs. T, Jeff, Carole Anne, Dylan, Tommy and me. Beau looked at his Josh and Ben, “Dads, let’s just have pizza and a salad for dinner. I don’t feel like cooking tonight.”
Dylan responded, “Come on Jason and Clay. We’ll go get the pizza while Tommy, Carole Anne and Jeff fix the salad. Uncle Ben you get everyone a drink. We’ll return shortly.”
Beau got a funny look on his face, “I think I have been replaced by a boy CEO.”
Everyone laughed and went to do as they were told. Beau went and set the table and came in and said, “Dads, your wine selection is looking rather meager. You need to think about replenishing it. Now that I have decided to drink a bottle before I go to bed every night.”
Beau had the people in the kitchen laughing. Mrs. Tillison said, “I can’t understand how Beau can be so resilient.”
I looked at them all, “Beau is a chameleon. I can almost feel him still seething about something, but he is trying to put on a great front. Let’s face it. He has accomplished a lot in the short time he has been here and had so many new experiences and handled them all so well that its like everyone says, “Let Beau take care of it. He’ll do a great job.”
Before anyone could say anything, Clay came bouncing in. “We’re back. He was carrying two bags. Jason was carrying two bags and Dylan had five pizza boxes.
Jason came back and announced, “Dinner is being served in the dining room.” The guys had gotten three large specialty pizzas, some chicken wings, bread sticks with marinara sauce and two dessert pizzas.
Beau had everything on the table. He asked Jeff to say a blessing. As soon as Jeff was done, Beau started to complain. “Honestly, no one ever listens to me. I said pizzas not everything in the world.”
“Dad, we need some little prong things like you put in corn on the cob so we wouldn’t get messy when we eat these little chicken thingies. Whoever heard of putting catsup on rolls? Uncle Dylan, we’ll all need to go to the dentists after eating these pizzas with M and M’s.”
Jason got up and put his hand over Beau’s mouth, “Eat and stop complaining.”
“I can’t. I’m too upset.” Beau pouted.
Clay asked, “Do Daddy D. and I need to give you one of those enemy things?”
Beau said, “No, I’ll be good and eat. For those of you who don’t know what's happening, don’t even ask.”
Beau ate and I noticed he ate a lot of salad and the taco pizza. He made sure everyone had what they wanted to drink. When everyone was finished, it was a team effort and the clean up was quickly completed.
The pool was opened and David and Boris were there with Matthew and Berto. Beau got the four of them together with Dylan and Carole Anne and finalized plans for the morning.
Beau closed the pool and the guys all left. Jeff took Mrs. T. home and Beau took Jason and Clay upstairs and had them take a shower. He applied Clay’s ointment and read the guys a short story while they were lying on either side of him.
Beau went downstairs and sat between his two Dads. “Dads, I’m sorry I lost it today, but I was totally unprepared for what happened in church. I’ve been thinking about what is best for Clay and I haven’t even told you all the details of what I’m planning for Mrs. Gleason. I am thankful that there are people like Jeff, Grams and Spencer around to figure out where I was today. Spencer is truly a wonderful friend.”
His Dads both held him and Josh said, “Son, you need to slow down. You can’t solve everyone’s problems. You know that when school starts in August, you are going to have another entirely new set of problems to worry about.”
Beau said, “I know, and I’m already trying to figure out how to solve them.”
Ben said, “Beau, empty your mind and think that you are walking along the Milky Way watching all the wonderfully exciting things that are going on in the universe. Now go to bed. We love you son.”
Beau kissed them both and disappeared. Ben went to check on the guys. The two youngest were in Jason’s bed and Beau was lying on top of his bed with just his briefs on. Both doors had been left open so Beau could make sure that Clay was fine.
To be continued...
Editor's Notes:
Poor little Clay. I bet he will be one good little guy, and will come through this just fine.
