Chapter 26

Watch Out Scribner

On Monday, Beau went out to run.  He was joined by Boris and David.  Jeff and Tommy pulled in with Berto and Spencer and then Father W. pulled in with Jeremy and the three oldest Leavitt boys.  They took off and people started to join them.  Beau led them to the park by his lake and they ran around the small lake.  When they got back to the house there were some tired people.

Beau took his Dads their coffee, took his shower and terrorized Jason and Clay.  Everyone got dressed and was eating their bacon and scrambled eggs, toast and juice.  Jason whispered to Beau, Clay’s bottom is looking much better.  He did not even tighten up when I put the ointment on him.”

Beau hugged Jason and whispered, “That’s because he trusts you.”

After breakfast Beau announced, “Clay, you are going with me and Daddy D. and Mommy C.   Dads, we will probably have a house guest for about a week.  Jason, you need to make sure that you have two qualified life guards on duty before you can open the pool.  Now let’s get this mess cleaned up.”

Carole Anne and Dylan arrived as the guys were finishing the cleanup.  Clay and Beau joined them and they met up with Berto and Matthew.  Mr. Cooper pulled up in his van with a truck from the store.

When they arrived in Scribner, Beau was very thorough.  “Mrs. Gleason, what do you want to take with you and do you have the records I requested?”

Mrs. Gleason said, “I have everything that I want to take in my closet up stairs and the records are in that closet over there.  Everything needs to be boxed up.”

Beau went upstairs and looked in the closet.  He had Berto and Matthew boxing the things she wanted to take.  Beau told them to put everything in Uncle David’s van.

He went to the downstairs closet and quickly scanned the most recent records.  Mrs. Gleason had been a very methodical person and had them sorted by months and years.  “Mrs. Gleason, why do you have three checking accounts?”

“My children thought it would best in case something happened.” Mrs. Gleason answered.

Beau said, “Dylan and Carole Anne, we need to take Mrs. Gleason to the bank, now, so she can close her accounts before her children rob her blind.  Mr. Cooper, call and see if you can get some more help here.  I want everything out of this house by 5:00 and I mean everything.”

“Uncle David and Uncle Boris please pack the things in this closet and put them in Mr. Cooper’s van.  Clay, you stay and help Mr. Cooper make sure that the people are busy but stay out of everyone’s way.  We’ll bring food for everyone when we come back.” Beau said.

Dylan, Carole Anne, Mrs. Gleason and Beau drove to the bank.  It was so close that it would have been almost faster to walk.

When they walked into the small bank, Beau didn’t have a good feeling.  He went to the person sitting at the information desk and said, “We’d like to see whoever is in charge of this operation and I mean now.”

The young woman looked at him, “Go talk to the tellers, they will help you.”

“Miss, what is it you didn’t understand?  I said we wanted to see the President or whoever is in charge now, and I mean now, or we’ll go barging in.  Carole Anne, hand me your phone please so I can make a call.”

Beau punched in the numbers and said, “Hi Sheriff Crawford, it’s me Beau.  We have a problem here at the bank in Scribner.  How fast can you be here? … Okay, see you in about 20 minutes.”

The young woman dialed quickly a number, “There are some visitors out here that insist on seeing you and they have called the Sheriff’s office.”

A young gentleman of about twenty something appeared.  He looked more than a little disheveled.  “I’m Mr. Prince, how may I help you?”

Beau said, “We asked to talk to the President not a lackey.  Come Mrs. Gleason, let’s just go right in.”

The four of them walked in followed by Mr. Prince and the President, Mr. Wagoner was busy fixing his clothes.  Beau said, “Sorry to interrupt your romp, but we want to close all of Mrs. Gleason’s accounts now, and I mean all.  We want itemized statements before we close, and you will issue her cashier’s checks for the remaining amounts.  You have ten minutes to comply or I’ll contact the state bank regulatory office and we’ll sue you for you for malpractice.”

“You can’t do that.  We’ll have to close.””  Mr. Wagner blurted.

Beau said, “Carole Anne, give me your phone.  Hey Grams call the state office in charge of banking, and tell them to get here to this bank in Scribner, now!  They obviously are having financial difficulties.  Then call Mr. Everett and tell him we want a full report on this Wagner person who claims to be the President.  I also want him to investigate Mrs. Gleason’s three children.  I’ll put her on, so she can give you the pertinent details.”

Beau handed the phone to Mrs. Gleason while he went with Mr. Wagner and Mr. Prince to make sure that nothing strange was going on.   Dan arrived in uniform with two other deputies.  Everyone in the bank took notice as Beau started talking to them.

Mr. Wagner and Mr. Prince brought some paperwork.  Beau looked at the report and said, “I don’t see the two large certificates of deposits that I know Mrs. Gleason has.  I thought I was very clear when I said all accounts with her name on them and I meant all.  Now I want a computer listing of every account that you have a record of.  Come on Uncle Dan, I hope we don’t have to call Judge Leavitt.”

By now the entire back staff was rattled and Mr. Wagner was totally beaten.  He just did as he was told.  Mr. Wagner came back, “Here is a complete list of accounts.  We have found four more that have Mrs. Gleason’s name on them, but they also have one of her children’s names on them.”

Beau asked, “Do they require one or both signatures to draw from them?”

Mr. Wagner said, “They only require one signature.”

“So get with it and close them all and get the cashier checks made out to Mrs. Irene Gleason.  Now move it.  If I find anymore irregularities, we’ll have Sheriff Crawford arrest you.  Oh and we want a copy of any and all activity that has taken place in Mrs. Gleason’s accounts in the past six years.  If you don’t provide them, then we will be charging you and your entire staff and the board of directors in a larceny case.  I’m not above also telling some of the local people about what is happening.”

“If I did that, in a matter of 15 minutes, there would be a run on the bank and you would be forced to close for good.”

After Beau was satisfied that Mrs. Gleason had all the money she was due, Beau said, “It has been interesting doing business, but I must say it wasn’t a pleasure.  I’m taking the listings and the records you have provided, so Mrs. Gleason’s attorney can review them and see what further legal action needs to be taken.”

Beau turned to Dan, “Thanks Uncle Dan, I’ll call you if I need you.  You three make sure these people don’t move.  I thank you all.”

They got in the van and Mrs. Gleason asked, “Young man, you don’t take any prisoners do you?”

Beau said, “Nope.”

They stopped, and picked up food and drinks for everyone.  When they arrived back at the house, Mr. Cooper had another crew plus Denny and Danny.  Beau did one of his patented whistles and everyone came and got their food and drinks.

After everyone had eaten, Beau said, “Dylan and Carole Anne, take Mrs. Gleason and Clay back to my house.  She will be staying in the guest room downstairs.  She’ll be staying with us until we can get everything squared away.”

“We’ll unload the vans when we get home.  Clay, I want you to make sure that Grandma Gleason gets some rest.  You show Daddy D. how to put a video in and you can watch a video, but I want you to rest.”  Beau said, as he hugged Clay.

The four of them left and Beau asked, “Mr. Cooper, may I use your phone?”

Mr. Cooper handed Beau his phone and Beau made his call, “Hey Grams, me again.  Call Uncle Norm and Aunt Nancy and Uncle Reg and ask them to be at our house at 7:30.  Also, call Mr. Carmichael and Uncle Hank and tell them we would like an appointment at 8:30 in the morning.  I’ll explain more later.  Now I have to get back to work.”

By 4:30, the house was empty and the two trucks left for Fremont.  Beau had everyone taking measurements and by 5:00 everyone was just about ready to leave after Beau locked up.  As Beau was getting into David’s van a gentleman in a new Lincoln Continental pulled up and asked, “Where’s my mother?”

Beau said, “If you are talking about Mrs. Gleason, she left and the house is empty and now belongs to me.  I have changed the locks so don’t even try to get in.  Bye sir, see you sooner than you think.”  Beau said, as he crawled in the van and the two vehicles pulled away.

When they got back to Fremont, Mr. Cooper, David and Boris helped the guys unload the things into Ben and Josh’s garage.  Mr. Cooper and Uncle Boris took the other guys home.  Beau went in and Carole Anne had fixed a nice dinner.  Beau hugged her and took a quick shower.

When he came down, Dylan and Carole Anne had introduced Mrs. Gleason to Ben, Josh, and Jason.  Everyone sat down to eat and Beau made sure that everyone had what they wanted.

As they were finishing, Dylan asked, “Sirs, we have a Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday.  Would it be permissible for us to take Clay to Des Moines with us?  We thought we would like to leave tomorrow morning and come back on Friday.”

Beau said, “You can leave right after you take me and Mrs. Gleason to the bank at 8:30 in the morning.  Fat Boy, we need to make sure you have enough clean clothes.  Man, are you going to like Daddy D.’s Grandparents.  They have some really neat friends.”

“Come on guys, we ate, so we need to clean what’s left.  Dads, Grams should be here shortly with Uncle Norm and Aunt Nancy and Uncle Reg.”

The guys did the cleanup and Beau called and asked us over so he would have sufficient life guards.  Both Tommy and Jeff agreed so away we went.

When we walked in, the guys were ready to swim so Tommy and Jeff went outside and helped Jason open the pool.

Nancy, Norm and Reg walked in.  Beau started with Nancy.  Aunt Nancy, I’m buying Mrs. Gleason’s house from her for $70,000.00.  Please make out the necessary paperwork.  Here is your fee for $1,000.00.  Let me know what other things I need to cover.”

“Uncle Reg, I want you to look over Mrs. Gleason’s accounts and see if you and Uncle Norm can find some abnormalities which I’m sure you will.  The three boxes of records are in the garage with red tags and I got these records from her old bank.”

“Uncle Norm, I’m awaiting a call from Mr. Everett.  I am pretty sure he is going to be providing us with some information that will necessitate a number of law suits.”

“Now I’m going swimming with my guys until I get the information.  I’ve had a busy day and I need to get rid of some of my pent up emotions.”

Carole Anne and Dylan started to laugh.  “Beau hasn’t stopped since we picked him up this morning.  He’s been going like the Energizer Bunny.  I hope he doesn’t implode again.”

Everyone except Reg and Norm went to watch the guys.  Beau was standing talking to David and Boris when Mrs. T. arrived.  She called him over and handed him a packet.  He quickly read the pages and went white.  He took them to Norm and went to get Judge Leavitt.

He introduced the Judge to Mrs. Gleason and showed her a copy of what Mrs. Tillison had given him.  She looked through the pages and said, “We’ll see about this.  May I have this copy?”

Beau shook his head and closed the pool.  He and Jason covered the pool and he gave Jason and Clay a snack the three of them left.

Everyone was sitting talking about what had happened.  Nancy and Norm left some papers for Mrs. Gleason to sign in the morning.   Reg finally came in and said, “I don’t know how he did it, but Beau has found some really big problems.  I’ll call Mr. Burns in the morning and tell him what I found and I’ll send Beau a copy.”

Mrs. Tillison said, “I want everyone to do what they can.  Beau is so going to be on overload and this is only Monday.  Marilyn, you make sure that Boris and David keep him away tomorrow as long as possible.  Irene, are you going to be okay?”

Mrs. Gleason said, “Aggie, I’ve been basically alone since my husband died six years ago.  Now I need to go to bed.  I’m not used to all this excitement and people caring about me.”

Everyone just looked at each other and left.  Ben and Josh went to check on the guys and Beau was asleep on the bed with his clothes on.

To be continued...

Feedback always welcome:

Editor's Notes:

Looks like Beau is doing his magic again. He manages to turn the most terrible things into something really palatable, doesn't he?

I can hardly wait for the next chapter.
