Chapter 23
Fat Boy Clay Arrives
Thursday the guys ran. When Ben, Josh and Jason came down, Beau fed them and went to work on the computer. He came back and called the Crane/Wanamaker residence. “May I talk to Doctor Icky pleaase? This is Beau.”
“Doctor Crane, your part of the auction netted $102,000.00. I was thinking it would be only fair if you shared some of that with Mr. Swanson, since you have already made a profit on what you bought. … I was thinking perhaps $20,000.00 sir. … Cool, thanks for being so generous. You all are expected here tomorrow night for dinner at 6:00. See you then.”
“Jason, please call Grandma Ginny. I need to talk to her.” Beau said, as he went back to the computer.
Jason got his Grandmother on the phone. “Hi Grandma, Beau wants to visit with you. When he’s done, I want to tell you about last weekend. Here’s Beau.”
“Hi Grandma Ginny, the auction went better than we expected. The reason I wanted to talk to you was to find out how to make out the check for the items that you had in storage? … Oh, you want the money to go to Jason. … Yes ma’am, I’ll take care of that. Now here is Jason.”
Jason visited with his Grandmother as Beau finished his e-mail.
He came back and said, “Dads, we’re having a dinner party tomorrow night if you hadn’t already guessed. There will be some new and some old faces here, so someone needs to take me to the store this evening after I practice with Jeff.
Josh said, “Whatever, your royal highness, we’re here to serve.”
“Knock it off, Dads. You’ll give me a complex. Love you anyway. He gave both of the guys a hug as he cleared the table. The other three left for work and Beau made some phone calls to make sure that everyone could attend.
He rode his bike to the Shoppe and parked in the loading area. Denny arrived and they were busy all day. Mr. Cooper took the guys home after they loaded Beau’s bike into the back of the van. Beau and Denny opened the pool and it was like everyone appeared. They had bicycles lined up along the garage.
Beau closed the pool at 5:30 and put the casserole he had made in the morning in the oven to warm. After dinner Jeff stopped for Beau and they went to the church. Drew, Dina and Kenny were there.
Jeff and Beau practiced for the funeral first and after one time through they quit. It was hard on everyone.
Drew and Dina were to sing two songs plus The Lord’s Prayer. They started to sing the first song and Beau said, “I think it would be neat if Dina stood on the side where Joni will be standing and Drew on Billy’s side and sang to each other. It would be like Billy and Joni were ventriloquists.”
They tried what Beau suggested and when they finished, Jeff said, “I agree with Beau. This would be very effective. It would add a dramatic flair but it wouldn’t be overstated. You will all be wonderful. Let’s just hope that Joni and Billy like it.”
Jeff dropped Beau off, and Beau and Jason went shopping with their Josh and Ben. Ben and Josh were pushing the carts as Jason and Beau filled them; Beau checked the checkers and didn’t see anyone he knew so he pulled them into the shortest line. Ben and Jason were putting the things on the conveyer belt while Josh started to bag. Beau was watching the prices as the items were scanned.
When the items were totaled Beau swiped his card and it cleared in no time. He went to help his Dad and saw that the Manager was helping Josh. “Hi sir, do you have a most wanted poster of me hanging around or what?” Beau asked.
“No, I was walking by and stopped to make sure that you didn’t get anymore free food.” the manager answered.
“Sir, you have been helping Dad, Dr. Benson and you already met have Doctor Jameson who is my brother’s Grandfather. This good looking young man is my brother Jason. The gentlemen shook hands and as they were leaving the manager said, “See you later Beau.”
When they got home, everyone helped to unload the groceries and Beau sent Jason to get ready for bed and his Dads to do whatever they needed to do. After he put the groceries away, he started to fix things for Friday’s dinner. Ben and Josh realized what he was doing and insisted on helping him. They did everything he wanted and they all finally went to bed. At the top of the stairs, Beau hugged them both and kissed them. “Thanks Dads for supporting me, but this is important. Love you.”
When Beau got up on Friday morning, it was storming so he went to the basement and started to work out. He was surprised when Berto and Jonathan came in. They were joined by Matthew and Corky. After they had worked hard and the guys left, Beau went to get showered.
Josh was standing in the kitchen. He grabbed Beau and said, “Son, you are not only a beautiful person on the inside, you a beautiful person that anyone would be love to be seen with. I’m so glad that you are my son.”
Beau looked at Josh and said, “Thank you for the kind words Dad. I’ll try never to let you down.” He kissed Josh and held him.
Josh said, “You go take a shower and I’ll fix breakfast. Here, take Ben his coffee and tell him and his lazy grandson to get up.”
Beau frowned and said, “Yes master.”
He went in and kissed Ben on the lips and said, “The master says you are to get your lazy butt out of bed now. Good morning, Pop. Gotta’ go wake your lazy grandson.”
He terrorized Jason and they took a shower together. Jason said, “Beau, you know that you are growing all over.”
Beau said, “And so are you, my young stud.”
That comment made Jason’s day. They went downstairs. Ben and Josh were talking when the two guys walked in. Beau said, “Dads, this is the last funeral that I am ever singing at. I can’t handle all of this strain.”
They had breakfast and the two young guys were cleaning up when the phone rang. Beau answered, “Pop, it’s for you.”
Ben left for his office after a short conversation and Josh left with Jason, and Beau was working on the evening meal. The phone rang and Beau answered. “This is the Benson-Jameson residence. How may I help you? … Oh hi Pop, what’s up? I was just about to go to work. ... You want what? … It’s that important. … Let me call someone and see if they can work for me. I was only scheduled for this morning since I have the funeral this afternoon. Okay Dad, I’ll be here.”
Beau called Berto and asked him to cover for him since his Dad had something he needed him to take care of.
Ben arrived with a little guy about Chip’s age. He obviously had been crying. Beau went right on the offensive. “Hey fat boy, are you hungry? We have some puppy chow and there is a kitty litter box downstairs. Now sit down at the table like a good fat boy and I’ll feed you.”
Beau pulled out a box of sugared cereal and poured it into a bowl and put some milk on it and handed it to the young man with two pieces of toast with jelly on it. “Now eat.”
The little guy was stunned, as Beau sat down beside him and started to talk. “Now, if you are going to live here with us, you need to eat and take a shower. My other Dad and brother have gone to work. I’m being lazy like you.”
“Dad, hand me the phone please.” He dialed, “Hey Land, it’s me again. I need help big time. How fast can you and Carole Anne get here? ... Okay but stop by Roddy’s house first. I’m going to call his Grandmama now. I have a fat boy here who needs some clothes. We’ll be in the shower or bath when you get here so just come in.”
Beau called Mrs. Wanamaker and told her what he needed. He turned to Ben and said, “Dad, are you trying to tell me what I’m thinking.”
Ben nodded and said, “Yes and even worse.”
“Okay Dad, I’ll take care of it. Call Doctor Dad’s office and tell them that we’ll be there in about an hour. Call Mrs. Rice and get temporary custody until I can figure this out. Now come on fat boy, you used these dishes you have to clean them and then put them in the dishwasher.”
“Dad, we’ll be fine. Carole Anne and Dylan will be here shortly. And we’ll see if we can find some clothes to fit fat boy here.”
He took the little guy up the stairs and the little guy asked, “Would you please stop calling me Fat Boy? My name is Clay.”
Beau was taken aback and said, “I’m sorry. We’ll call you Clay if you want.” He pulled the little guy close and asked, “Do you want to take bath or shower?”
“Could we take a shower? I’ve never had one.” Clay answered.
The two guys undressed and Beau climbed into the shower with Clay and shampooed and conditioned Clay’s hair. He instructed Clay on how to wash his body but made sure not to touch him other than for his hair.
Dylan came in and announced, “Beau, here are the things that you asked for.”
The two guys got out of the shower and Beau said, “Hi Uncle Dylan, will you make sure that Clay gets dry before he gets dressed. I’ll go get dressed and be right back. Is Aunt Carole Anne downstairs?
“Yep, she’s waiting for us.” Dylan knew something was happening but didn’t know what. When he was helping Clay get dry, he soon realized.
Beau dressed and jumped down the stairs and said, “C. A., treat Clay with kid gloves. Dylan will tell you more later.”
Dylan and Clay came down the stairs and Beau introduced Carole Anne. Clay said, “You sure are pretty.”
Beau said, “We need to go see Doctor Dad. Let’s roll.”
Carole Anne was beginning to realize that this was not a good situation. They came into my office and Lash took them right to an exam room. When I entered, Beau said, “Dad, I have Fat Boy Clay here who needs to see you. Uncle Dylan and Aunt Carole Anne brought us. Would you make sure he is going to live?”
I started to do the routine things and soon realized that Beau was sending me signals that said I needed to spend some extra time. I had Clay undress except for his briefs. I made a big deal of each of his body parts. I pulled down shorts and touched his penis and his testicles and said. “All systems look like they are normal here. Now, I need to check the other side.”
I checked his body for signs of beatings which I didn’t find. I then said, “Clay, can you push your briefs down so I can check the area they are covering?”
He looked at Beau and Beau nodded. I saw what I needed to see, and said, “Okay young man, I have a prescription for you. I want you and Beau to put this ointment on your bottom for the next ten days or I may have to give you ten shots. I want to see you again in ten days. Beau, he’s not fat; you need glasses.”
I pulled Clay up and said, “I’m going to have Jill draw some blood, and I want you to go to the bathroom in this cup and Toni will take a picture of your insides to make sure that nothing is missing.”
Beau left with Clay and they accomplished the three tasks. I told Dylan that Clay had some bad bruises but did not think we should pursue the situation anymore until Clay trusts us. He has already accepted Beau and he’s beginning to be comfortable with you so just be patient.”
Beau and Clay came in and Beau said, “Mission completed Doctor Dad. We have to take Fat Boy Clay and get him some clothes.
“Beau, Clay needs to eat more. I think he needs a big milk shake with lunch and you need a glass of water and a piece of lettuce.” I challenged Beau.
Beau gave me a big hug and whispered, “Thanks Doctor Dad.”
Clay did the same thing. At first he was a little tense but finally relaxed and said, “I like you Doctor Dad.”
On the way out, Beau finally saw Tommy. “Hey Tommy, come meet my new friend Clay. Have you been on break? We’ve been here for 45 minutes and this is the first time we have seen you. Are you going to the funeral?”
Tommy said, “Some people have to work for a living. Lash keeps us chained to chairs and doesn’t permit any breaks and yes I am one of the pall bearers. It’s going to be an emotional afternoon. I am not sure how we will be able to handle the experience.”
“Clay, Tommy is another brother but he lives with Doctor Dad.” Beau said.
He turned to Tommy and said, “Tommy, Clay is going to be living with us. He had an experience similar to yours, I think.”
Tommy scooped Clay up and just held him. Carole Anne and Dylan watched as Clay just relaxed and gave Tommy a kiss.”
Tommy put Clay down, and Clay took Carole Anne and Dylan’s hands as they started to walk toward the car. Beau went to pay Lash and Lash said, “It’s a wash Benson. I need to go check on Doctor Wilson. I think he is probably in melt down.”
Lash did something the staff didn’t do when he came into my office without knocking. I was sitting there with tears in my eyes. “Lash, I can’t for the life of me imagine what might have happened Clay will be scarred for life emotionally.”
“Jack, Beau has already begun the healing process. Clay adores him. He also feels comfortable with Dylan and Carole Anne. I can almost feel Beau developing a plan, so just be there to support whatever he has on his mind.” Lash said, as he left.
Beau, Carole Anne and Dylan took Clay to Target and got him some basic sets of clothes that he would need for the next several days. After which they had lunch at the Madison’s and the guys shared a hamburger and fries and Clay had his chocolate milk shake and two cookies.
They finished and Beau paid and they went back to Josh and Ben’s. “We have to go to a funeral. I need to get dressed.”
Carole Anne said, “We should probably change.”
Beau asked, “Why? Some of the other people will be coming from work. You all look fine.”
Beau went and changed into his suit and tie. When he came down, everyone just looked at him. Clay asked, “Is that really Beau?”
Dylan said, “He’s really someone from outer space that looks like Beau.”
They left for the church and Beau went to the choir area and sat down as Jeff started to play.
The minister began the service and nodded to Beau and he sang Here I Am Lord. The service continued and at the appropriate time Beau sang Beyond the Sunset.”
Clay had crawled on Dylan’s lap so he could see better and he reached up and touched Carole Anne’s face. “Beau is beautiful isn’t he? He sings like a bird.”
Carole Anne leaned down and kissed Clay and whispered, “Yes, Beau is very special.”
As the service was ending, the pall bearers – Drew, Kenny, Tommy, Berto David and Bobby T. took their place along side the coffin and Beau sang the 23rd Psalm and went right into The Lord’s Prayer. Beau watched as the casket exited down the center aisle. He looked like he was going to lose it until he saw Clay sitting on Dylan’s lap. Clay gave a little wave and it was like Beau was rejuvenated.
Beau went and got Dylan, Carole Anne and Clay and they went to the Fellowship Hall. Beau found the Rasmussen’s and offered his condolences and said, “I’m sorry we have to run, but we have a number of people from out of town coming tonight, so I need to make sure that everything is ready.”
Mr. Rasmussen slipped an envelope in Beau’s pocket. Beau said, “Sir, I didn’t do this for money. I did it because I considered Brent a good friend.”
“Beau, Brent did not respect many people. He accepted most of them as acquaintances. Even though you were four or five years younger, you accepted him for whom he was. He truly respected you because you stood up for him and the baseball team, so please accept it.”
“Mr. and Mrs. Rasmussen, if you ever need any company, just pop over to our house most any afternoon and you'll find a zoo.” He hugged them both and turned to leave with Carole Anne, Dylan and Clay
Mr. and Mrs. Leavitt, the boys’ parents stopped Beau and said, “It looks like you are everywhere. No wonder the four guys think you are the best. You are not only talented but you are very handsome.”
Beau and Clay crawled into the second seat and once they started, Clay asked, “You won’t let anyone go to the bathroom on me again will you Beau?”
Beau didn’t make a big issue of it, but instead said, “Nah, everyone has to use the bathroom.”
Clay said, “Good.” as he laid his head against Beau. He looked up and asked, “Are you going to be my Daddy?”
Beau said, “Nope. I am just kid like you except a little bigger.”
“Are Aunt Carole Anne and Uncle Dylan going to be my mommy and daddy?” Clay asked.
“I don’t know. They aren’t married yet.” Beau said.
“Oh.” Clay said and he laid his head against Beau again. “Am I going to live with you?”
“Yes, for a couple of days at least.” Beau answered,
Clay looked up at Beau and asked, “You don’t have any guns at your house do you?”
“Nope.” Beau answered.
Clay said, “Good, and you won’t let anyone bleed on me again will you? I didn’t like that feeling.”
“Nope.” Beau said as he held Clay tight.
Fortunately, they pulled up at Ben and Josh’s house and Beau said, “Okay Mr. Clay, let’s get you a snack and a glass of milk.”
After Clay finished, Beau took him to the guest bedroom and had Clay go to the bathroom and said, “I want you to lay down here and rest. I’ll leave the door open. We’ll be in the kitchen. I’ll come and get you in 20 minutes. Here, I’ll cover you with this sheet.”
Beau went into the kitchen and said, “I think I am going to be sick. I think Clay pretty much told us why he is here without us asking anything.”
Beau went to check on Clay and he was asleep. He went back to the kitchen and said, “Now come on help me get everything ready for tonight. I am so far behind. This day has gone to the dogs in a hurry. This was supposed to be a day for celebrating.”
The guests started to arrive and Beau woke Clay and turned him over to Chip and Roddy. Beau had the grills going and at the appropriate time, he and Dylan started cooking the shish kebobs while Carole Anne was manning the ovens. As the shish kebobs were finished Beau put them on the warming table and brought out the rice pilaf, bread and tossed salad. Beau asked Father W. to bless the food and the ladies as usual went through the line first.
Beau and Carole Anne were helping everyone as they came through the line while Jeff and Dylan finished the things on the grills. Everyone was eating their food except Beau and he left and came back with some envelopes.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the reason for this party tonight is twofold. First, I wanted everyone to get to know each other; and secondly, I want to give everyone the money that they received from the auction on Wednesday. Mr. Carstairs handed me the checks as he arrived. Only he and I know who will be receiving what. I just hope everyone will be pleased.” Beau said.
“Mrs. Dover, I’m going to start with you. Yours was the most difficult to calculate. We sold all of your artworks, but I took things from other peoples’ collection to redecorate your house. I had to make an educated guess on a fair price for the items so the others would receive what they were due. Mrs. Weaver has also given me a check for the difference in your old and new furnishings.” Beau said, as he handed her two checks.
She said, “You still haven’t told me how much the labor and materials to fix my home cost.”
“Mrs. Dover, I have an itemized statement for you right here. You can give me a check sometime. I have already paid for everything.” Beau said, as he handed her another envelope.
“Now Aunt Lydia, yours is rather straight forward. I hope you find this check to your liking.” Beau handed Mrs. Olson her check and she looked at it and smiled.
“Uncle Niles, I have a check here for you, but I need to explain that since you technically had nothing in the auction, Doctor Crane was so pleased that he decided to share some of his profit with you.” Beau handed Mr. Swanson his envelope. Mr. Swanson was stunned and just went to Les and hugged him.
“Doctor Crane, here’s your check. You already know the amount.” Beau said as he handed Les his check.
“Grandmama Wanamaker, I think you’ll be pleased with what you find in here.” Beau said. She looked in the envelope and started to laugh.
“Okay Jason, you are up. Here’s the money from the things in your old house and from Grandma Ginny’s things in storage.” Jason looked inside and handed it to his Granddad.
Beau said, “Dad and Pop, this check is for the items that you had in your other house that we didn’t or couldn’t use.” Ben and Josh looked at their check and shook their heads.
Beau put the next envelope in his pocket. He took the next envelope. “Mr. and Mrs. Cooper and Mr. and Mrs. Weaver, I got to feeling bad about cutting you out of the middle on these sales so here is a little finder’s fee for the Shoppe.” He handed the check to Mrs. Cooper.
“I have one more check.” Beau said as he pulled the envelope across his head. “Oh, it’s coming. It says the Spencer Knight Education Fund.” He handed the envelope to Spencer.
Spencer looked inside and said, “Beau, I can’t take this.” Spencer started to cry.
Beau went to Spencer and hugged him and said, “Well it won’t do anyone else any good since it is a certified check made out specifically to Spencer Knight College Fund.”
Mrs. Weaver handed Beau an envelope for his pay for the week. “The other guys have already received their checks.”
Mrs. Dover handed Beau a check and said, “I’ve added a little bonus because I’m so thrilled with what you did. I feel like a new person.”
Beau was a little surprised but didn’t argue.
Josh said, “Beau, eat something. You are running on empty.” Beau did as he was told.
The people who had to go to rehearsal got up to leave. Beau said, “Jason, the pool closes at 8:30. Make sure that you and Clay take a shower to get the chlorine off. You can have a snack and I want you to let him sleep with you tonight until I get back.”
“Dads, we need to discuss some things when I get back. Thank you everyone for coming.” Beau said as he took off with Jeff.
Jeff asked, “Beau, what’s going on with Clay?”
“Jeff, I can only speculate from what Clay said this afternoon but I’m sure it is a story that is not going to make anyone feel good.”
The rehearsal went great and Joni and Billy really liked what Beau had suggested Drew and Dina do. Beau, Kenny, Spencer and Bobby were going to be wonderful ushers. Chipper was going to be smart looking ring bearer. He and the flower girl looked so cute walking together and Denny was in charge of the guest book.
When Jeff and Beau came in, Beau went right upstairs to check on Jason and Clay. Clay was asleep in Jason’s arms. Jason motioned for Beau to lean down. Jason whispered, “What happened to Clay? Someone hurt him really bad. He asked me to put this cream on his bottom.”
Beau whispered, “We’ll talk about it in the morning. Now go to sleep.” Beau kissed both guys.
Everyone was waiting for Beau. Everyone included Carole Anne, Dylan, Mrs. T., Josh, Ben, Jeff and me. Beau said, “Pop, tell us what happened. Clay told Carole, Dylan and me a lot without us asking any questions. We have a rather good idea of what happened.”
“First, his Father and Mother are dead. His father died two years ago and his mother had a boyfriend.” Ben stopped.
“When the police arrived, Clay was pinned under the naked dead boyfriend and was struggling to get away, but the man was too heavy. The man was bleeding and it appears that he had been shot by Clay’s mother; who then had turned the gun on herself”
“The police removed the body and Clay was is in hysterics. They rushed him to the hospital and sedated him. He would hardly talk to anyone and resisted being touched. I’m sorry to have dumped him on you this morning, but I didn’t know what else to do.” Ben finished.
“It’s okay Dad. I must have touched the right buttons because he hasn’t resisted me, Dylan or Carole Anne. In fact he wanted to know if we were going to be his Daddy and Mommy. He was also comfortable with Doctor Dad and Tommy and he and Jason are cuddled together now.” Beau said.
He looked at everyone and said, “Good night everyone. I really don’t choose to talk about this anymore right now. My mind is on overload. I’ll be in Jason’s room with the two guys.” Beau said as he went up the stairs.
Everyone knew they had been dismissed. Ben and Josh went up the stairs and Beau was in bed with his arms around the other two guys. He signaled with his hand that everyone was fine.
To be continued...
Editor's Notes:
Everyone was fine? That seems a little much. Poor little Clay. He is adorable, isn't he? I know he will make someone a fine son. I have an idea who might want to have a son right now, but I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens next.
