Chapter 22

Lawyer Beau Pleads his Case

Tuesday was another nice morning and people arrived to run including the three oldest Leavitt boys.  No one had on shirts since it was so warm.  People were out and cheered the group as they ran by.

Beau worked all day at the Shoppe, so everyone could take a day off.  He was surprised when Matthew showed up with Berto and Jonathan.  They were busy restocking and rearranging the show rooms and all four of them made sizeable sales.  They took off at lunch time and went to Burger King.  Beau had the healthiest meal he could find.

They left the Shoppe at four and Beau opened the pool and soon had a large gang with him.  Beau started to fix dinner and Dylan, Carole Anne and Mrs. T. arrived.  Beau closed the pool at 5:30 and everyone departed except Jason.  When Ben and Josh arrived, they fixed everyone a drink and Beau and Jason finished preparing dinner.

After dinner Beau arranged for Carole Anne and Dylan to take him and Mrs. Tillison to Omaha for the auction.  They planned to leave at 8:30.  Beau was just getting ready to take a shower when the phone rang.  Ben answered and handed the phone to Beau.

“Hey Aunt Marilyn, what’s up? … You want me to come over?  What for? … Oh the boys’ parents are going ballistic. …   Okay, I’ll bring my Dad with me.  See you in a couple of minutes.”

Beau and Josh went next door and Mrs. Leavitt met them at the door.   They went in and Beau and Josh took off their shoes.

They went into the living room and the four boys were sitting on the sofa.  Their parents were sitting on a love seat; Mrs. McDowell and Mr. Leavitt were sitting in chairs.  There were two chairs left so Beau just sat on the floor and asked, “Okay, why am I here?”

The younger Mrs. Leavitt said, “We want you to stay out our sons’ lives. You are changing them into perverts.”

Beau stood up and said, “Excuse me, ma’am.  I have something I need to take care of first before we discuss this issue.  John, I need you to take my Dad home.  I want you to baby-sit with Jason.  Tell him he needs to watch Rikki Tikki and when the video ends, tell him he needs some ice cream and cookies.  Now you take my Dad home and make him rest.”

When John left, holding Josh’s hand, his parents had a very upset look.  As soon as they were out of the door, Beau said, “I want the five adults to not interrupt until I ask for your input.  If you do, I’ll take the other three guys home with me too.  Is that understood?”

Mrs. McDowell, and Judge Leavitt and her husband nodded yes.  Beau started like he was a lawyer.  “Matthew, would you describe just exactly what has been going on since I left?”

Matthew said, “When Mark and Luke were gone, our parents were like hypochondriacs.  All they could talk about was that Uncle Alex and Uncle Boris were taking advantage of Mark and Luke.  When they saw the two guys hug them when they left for Lincoln, they totally lost their cool.  It’s been like the four of us have been under house arrest.”

“Thank you Matt.  Now Mark and Luke, did Uncle David or Uncle Boris do anything sexual with you?”

Both guys started to laugh.  Mark said, “They are bigger prudes almost than our parents.  The first couple of days, they wouldn’t go to the bathroom at the same time as we did.”

“Oh, what happened?”  Beau asked.

Luke took over, “I was determined to see what a grown man’s penis looked like, so I climbed a tree and waited for one of them to go to the bathroom.  I was getting bored and was getting down when Uncle David finally went behind the trees to take a leak.  I was impressed.”

“Well?” asked Beau.

Mark giggled and said, “Luke was climbing down from the tree and got stuck.  Uncle David and Uncle Boris had to assist him.  They wanted to know what he was doing in the tree anyway and Luke being his candid self said, ‘I was trying to see what a grown man’s penis looked like.’  Uncle David said, ‘Well why didn’t say so?  You may look all you want but you may never touch.’  He dropped his jeans and shorts and stood there in all his glory.”

Luke said, “He told Uncle Boris to do the same and he finally dropped his jeans and they both stood there.  They looked very different but Mark told me later why.  They both got dressed and Uncle David said, ‘Okay guys, it’s your turn for Show and Tell.’  I just stood and dropped my jeans and briefs and Mark reluctantly did the same. All either of them said was ‘Very nice.’”

Beau asked, “Did they ever touch you sexually or talk about sex?”

Mark said, “They were very careful never to touch us in a way that might be interpreted as sexual.   And yes, we talked about sex, after I asked what it was like to be gay.”

Luke spoke up and said, “They told us, ‘It’s not important if someone is gay but how they treat other people that is important.  They said that no one wants to be gay, but if they are then people they still need people to love and respect them.  They also told us that young males need to be able to keep their male organ in their pants until they are at least 18 and old enough to make intelligent choices and decisions.’”

Beau said, “I rest my case.  Matthew, you take these two retards to our house and get them some ice cream.  I will be there in a few minutes after I make my closing argument.”

Mark and Luke were getting ready to charge but Beau gave them a look that signified they should just go.

As soon as the guys left, Beau started. “First, the four guys will be spending the night at our house.  You can pick them up in the morning between 8:00 and 8:30.  Second the guys are to be permitted to see Uncle David and Uncle Boris as often as they would like.  They would be good role models especially for Mark, since he is probably gay.”

“Third, the boys’ parents need to seek counseling to help them cope.  Unless I am badly mistaken, they have other issues beside the boys’ perversion that they need to resolve.  Fourth, the guys need to be enrolled in some sort of martial arts training immediately especially the three youngest.  Matthew seems equipped to take care of himself.”

“Fifth, you need to stop cramming religion down their throats or they are going to tune out completely.  Sixth, you need to keep their minds stimulated, especially Luke, otherwise they are going to let their natural talents go to waste.”

“Seventh, you need to let them work as much as they chose, so they can develop a sense of self worth.  Matt is already a valuable part of our team at the Antique Shoppe.  The three younger guys could work with the Five Star Yard Company.  They would be surrounded by wonderful people their own ages.”

Eighth, Judge Leavitt, you have my permission to tell them anything that you know about me, from the court room that will perhaps help everyone understand why I am like I am.  Whatever is said in this room needs to stay here and not one of the guys is ever to hear a word about it.  Now I'm out of here.”

Beau hugged and kissed Judge Leavitt and Mrs. McDowell.  He hugged the elder Mr. Leavitt and waved to the younger Leavitts as he was leaving.

When Beau got home, the guys were finishing their dessert and after everything was cleaned up, Beau directed them upstairs.  He had two guys taking showers in his and Jason’s shower, two in the hall bathroom and he and Matthew used Josh and Ben’s shower.

The guys decided to sleep in two beds.  Luke and Mark slept with Jason and John slept with Matt and Beau.  Both doors were open when Josh and Ben went to bed and they checked and all six guys were asleep.

When Beau woke up on Wednesday, he woke Matt and when they realized it was raining, they went to the basement to work out.  They were joined by Berto and Jonathan.  The four of them had a good workout and Matthew and Beau took a quick shower together and started breakfast.  Beau delivered the coffee to his Dads and woke the four sleeping guys.

Beau and Matthew had everything ready when the other six arrived. Everyone was sitting at the table eating blueberry pancakes and sausage when Judge Leavitt and her husband walked in.  Beau got up and offered them seats and put a plate of pancakes and sausage with fruit in front of them.  Everyone was eating and not complaining.  The doorbell rang and Jason went to get it.

The younger Leavitts came in and John asked, “How come we never have anything like this for breakfast?”

Beau looked at the clock and said, “I have to go.  I made a mess, but some of you need to clean up.  He rinsed his dishes and went to get ready to go to Omaha.  When he came down, he had on a turtle neck shirt with his Blazer and dress slacks and loafers.

Luke looked at him and asked, “So, are you Superman or Spider Man?”

Beau said, “Just call me Super Beau.  Just call and I’ll be here.”

Carole Anne and Dylan just walked in and then Beau said goodbye and three of them left and picked up Mrs. Tillison.  They arrived at the art gallery just before ten.

Mr. Carstairs met them and said, “Beau, I have no idea what’s going to happen today.  There are more collectors registered than I have ever had for any previous show.  I hope you don’t mind, but I included your name in the advertising.”

Beau said, “So I guess I get 10% of your $50,000.00 right?”

Mr. Carstairs laughed, “Yeah, you’ll probably wind up with $5.00.”

Mr. Carstairs took them through the exhibits and Beau was looking around.

“Mr. Carstairs, I can’t believe you put this statue of this little boy in such a prominent place.”

“Beau, I figured if we put it out like this, someone might offer us a couple hundred bucks.  I think that it was one of your things.  Now how much am I permitted to make on the sales today.  I was thinking 10% up to a maximum of $150,000.00.”

“Dream on Carstairs.  $125,000.00 max.”

It was lunch time by the time they finished looking around and Mr. Carstairs said, “I’ll treat everyone to lunch.  We can walk to the restaurant now that is isn’t raining.  The auction doesn’t start until 1:00.”

He took them to the French Café.  He had made reservations and they were seated immediately.  Beau looked at the server who handed them the menus and asked, “What would you order if you were eating healthy?”

“Well our specialty is the French onion soup and I would probably have a tossed salad with the house dressing and the escargot, and if you are so inclined, you could have one of our rich desserts.”  The young man answered.

Beau said, “I’ll have everything but the rich dessert and I would like something to drink that is not alcoholic or carbonated please.”

Everyone else duplicated his order but they had wine.  After eating, Beau was like a cat about to pounce.  “Come on everyone, we need to get back to the gallery.”

They walked to the gallery and the hall was filled with patrons.  The auction started and things were going for better than expected prices.  About ¾ of the way through the auction, Beau’s little statue was brought to the bidders. The auctioneer said, “Who will make a bid of $1000.00?”

A gentleman holding the number 151 stood and said, “I’ll make a bid of $2,500,000.00.  I have a cashier’s check to cover that amount.”  Everyone turned to look at the gentleman.  Beau looked at Mr. Carstairs.  The auctioneer closed the bidding and said, “Sold to #151.”

Beau and Mr. Carstairs went to the gentleman and asked, “Sir, could we speak to you in the office.

The gentleman followed them and Beau asked, “Sir, you must have wanted that piece pretty badly.  May I ask why, since it belonged to me?”

“I assume you might be Mr. Benson, so I’ll level with you.  This is the last piece of a three piece set created by Michelangelo, depicting Romulus, Remus and the Wolf who raised them.  I already have the other two pieces.  Do you have any idea how you got this piece?”

“Sir, I have no idea.  We found it an attic of my old house that I didn’t even know existed.  Now, let’s get back to the auction so I know what I have to pay whom.” Beau said.

They went back to the auction and Beau looked at what Dylan and Mrs. T. had written down for the things that were sold while they were gone.

Beau was watching the bidding and it seemed to get more exciting since it was like the people were afraid they might be missing something.  The auction closed just before 5:00.

Mr. Carstairs took Beau, Mrs. T., Dylan and Carole Anne to his office and offered them a drink.  Mrs. T. had a scotch while the other three had water.”

“Beau, how do you want the checks made out?”  Mr. Carstairs asked.

Beau said, “For starters, your commission will be a flat two fifty for the entire auction.  Take it from my check.  I guess I can afford to give you $2.50.”

Everyone started to laugh and Beau said, “Mr. Carstairs, I’m still in shock. I’ll call you in the morning and tell you how the checks should be made out.  I was serious when I said your commission would $250,000.00.  That’s a 100% increase over what we agreed on.  Now if you get me your totals I will sort it out. It is a little more complicated than people realize.”

“I want all four of you in this room to promise me that you will never tell anyone about what happened today.  I don’t want any of my peers to have any idea how much money I have.  I will tell the people that I think need to know.  Please don’t break my trust.”

A young man came in and handed Mr. Carstairs five ledger sets.  He handed them to Beau who quickly examined them and said, “These look accurate.  Now what time would be good for me to call you tomorrow?”

“Beau, I’ll come in early since we will be extremely busy packing and shipping the pieces we have sold today.  So why don’t you call me after 8:30 or you could e-mail me.  That way we both would have a hard copy to work with.”  Mr. Carstairs suggested.

“Good idea, now do you know a good restaurant on our way home?  I think I can spring for a nice meal.”  Beau laughed.

Mr. Carstairs said, “One of my favorite restaurants out that way is di Coppia.  You gentlemen are wearing jackets and shoes and that is all they require.  I’ll call and make reservations for you if you would like?”

Beau looked at Mrs. T. and she said, “Its fine with me.  I haven’t eaten at that restaurant since it moved to their new location.”

Mr. Carstairs made the call and said, “You have reservations for 6:30.  The reservation is in your name Beau, and here is the address.”

Mrs. Tillison looked at it and said, “I know where that is.”

Beau stood and shook Mr. Carstairs’ hand and said, “I’ll be in touch tomorrow.  Thanks for everything.”

Beau thanked the staff as they were leaving.  They had a great meal and when they got Josh and Ben’s house Jeff and I were there visiting.

As soon as Beau walked in, he started.  “Gees, all the right people are here.  I’m going to tell you something that no one outside this room except for Mr. Carstairs, Mr. Carmichael and probably Uncle Hank are to know.  There was a statue that was in my attic that sold today for 2½ million dollars.  So I don’t want anyone yelling at me, if I spend a little money from time to time.”

The four us looked dumbfounded but Mrs. T., Carole and Dylan shook their heads and were laughing.

“Now I know that you didn’t come here to welcome us back.  You all seem a little tense.  Does someone want to tell us what’s wrong?” Beau asked.

Jeff said, “Beau, you are singing at a funeral on Friday.”

“Why am I singing at a funeral on Friday and do I even know the person who died?” Beau asked.

“You are singing because the Rasmussen’s specifically requested that you sing. Brent was killed in a motorcycle accident.”  Jeff answered.

“You mean Brent who was the Captain of the baseball team?” Beau asked.

Jeff nodded.  Beau asked, “Where, what time and what am I singing?”

“You’re singing at the church at 2:00 on Friday and the Rasmussen’s requested that you sing, Here I am Lord, Beyond the Sunset and the Lord’s Prayer.  I also suggested that you sing the 23rd Psalm.”  Jeff said.

“I didn’t know Brent and his family went to our church.”

“They don’t, but their sanctuary is being remodeled and Father Gilbert volunteered our church since it will probably be a large service.” Jeff said.

Mrs. Tillison asked, “Who’s playing the organ, since Adam is out of town until next week?”

Jeff said, “I’ll be playing all weekend since I was scheduled to play for Joni and Billy’s wedding on Saturday and Adam had asked me to play for him on Sunday.”

“You guys sure know how to make a day go south in a hurry.  I’m going to bed before something else bad happens.”  Beau said, as he started up the stairs.  He turned and said, “Thanks for going with me today.  Talk to you later.”

The three people who had been with Beau had a ball telling what had happened at the auction.  Everyone was getting ready to leave when Jason came down the stairs, “Why is Beau crying?  Is he in trouble or something?  Did someone hurt him?  He won’t even talk to me.”

Jeff said, “Jason, he is upset because one of his friends died.”

Jason asked, “Which friend?  Did I know the person?”

“His name was Brent Rasmussen and I’m sure you didn’t know him.  Beau will be fine.  He just needs some time to work this out and besides he has had a very busy day and is very tired.”  Jeff said, as he hugged Jason and sent him back to bed.

To be continued...

Feedback always welcome:

Editor's Notes:

That was quite a chapter.  Poor Beau. I hope he calms down and realizes that every so often, bad things happen and there is absolutely nothing one can do to stop them.
