Chapter 4
Sales Commission
Saturday morning, I awoke and looked at the clock. I looked at Jeff and he was still asleep. I was beginning to get concerned until I saw that he was dressed in running clothes. I went into the bathroom and started to get ready to take a shower. Before I could climb in, I was joined by Jeff.
Beau and Jeff had gone for a 10 mile run again and Jeff had come back to bed to rest and tried to not wake me. We got dressed and went downstairs. We could hear someone working in the guest room. I sat down and was drinking my coffee and reading the paper.
Beau came into the kitchen and announced, “The coffee cake is warm. I was beginning to think that everyone was going to sleep all day. Jeff, please go wake up the other clowns. I’m not cleaning the house by myself.”
Beau went back to work and before long we were joined by Tommy and Danny. Beau started giving them a hard time about sleeping all day. After they had eaten, Danny helped Beau with the cleaning, while Tommy was changing the bed linens and doing the laundry. Jeff and I were handed a long grocery list.
As we were leaving for the grocery store, Jason arrived and he was put to work. The guys had the down stairs looking spotless and went to take care of the bedrooms and the bathrooms upstairs.
Jeff and I got back from the store and Tommy was helping us put the groceries away when the phone rang. Tommy answered it, “Just a moment, sir.”
Tommy called for Beau who came down the stairs to see what was needed. Tommy handed the phone to Beau.
Beau said, “This is Beau Benson. … Oh hi Mr. Weaver. What can I do for you? … You would like me to come to the store at 1:00. Why? … Mrs. Hunt did what? … Just a minute, let me check?”
Beau turned to us and asked, “Can someone please take me to the Antique Shop? Some lady specifically asked for me and Denny to help her. She is going to arrive at 1:00.”
Tommy said, “I’ll take you. It will be so nice not to have someone telling us what to do all the time.”
Beau stuck out his tongue and turned back to the phone. “Mr. Weaver, I’ll be there. I’ll call Denny and see if he can come too. See you at 1:00.”
Beau dialed, “Hey Denny, we are needed at the Antique Store at 1:00 Are you available? … Good, Tommy and I will pick you up at 12:45. See ya.”
Beau grabbed a sandwich and put on some clean clothes and as the guys were leaving, Beau said, “Remember, Mrs. Chambers will be arriving shortly. Make sure you show her a good time.”
Beau and Denny arrived at the store at 12:55. They were looking around when a lady came in. Mr. Weaver called, “Beau and Denny, your client is here.”
Beau went to the lady and got a funny look on his face and asked, “Mrs. Hunt, is something wrong?”
The lady laughed and said, “I’m not Mrs. Hunt. Ellen is my sister and she told me that you and Denny were the two persons that could best help me with what I am looking for. My name is Gladys Cutter. My husband and I are going to retire and open a bed and breakfast and we are looking for some good antiques to put in the rooms of our new house. We are giving all of our old furniture to our sons and daughters.”
Beau asked, “How many rooms of furniture are you looking at?”
“I am concerned right now with three bedrooms, living and dining room furniture.”
Beau said, “Mrs. Cutter, we have a sleigh bed set. It was made about 1850 and the set is in near perfect condition for being 150 years old. With a little elbow grease, it would really sparkle.” Beau went and got some lemon oil and a clean cloth and started to rub, and the beautiful grain started to appear.
Mrs. Cutter said, “I think I would like to put this set in our master bedroom. How much would it cost?”
Beau said, “We can let you have the set for $8000.00.”
“I’ll take it. Now we still need three more sets for the guest bedrooms.” Mrs. Cutter said.
Just then Mrs. Weaver and Mr. and Mrs. Cooper came in. Mr. Weaver started to follow the guys and Mrs. Cutter around with a pad, taking notes on what was being sold.
Beau said, “Mrs. Cutter, how about this canopy bed set? You could fix it up to be a romantic setting and call it the honeymoon /anniversary suite.”
“I’ll take it.” Mrs. Cutter said.
Beau looked around and said, “What about this set? You could call the room with this furniture Pilgrim’s Rest and see that simple set over there it could go in a room called Appalachian Springs.”
Beau quickly polished a piece of each set and Mrs. Cutter said, “I’ll take both sets. Now we need to think about accessorizing the rooms.”
“Ma’am, I think you should put the furniture in the rooms first, and then decide what you need, to make the rooms inviting and comfortable.” Beau said.
“Yes, I think you have a point. Do you two gentlemen think that you would be available to help me decide what is needed?” Mrs. Cutter asked,
“We’d be delighted to help you, but you must remember that we are not decorating gurus. We are only two punk teenagers.”
Mrs. Cutter said, “Now how about the living room and dining room furniture?”
Denny said, “Since you are going to have as many as six guests, you need a table that can accommodate eight people so that you and your husband can eat with your guests. This set will really sparkle when it is polished. The dining set is made of walnut and would be a great addition to your house with the proper accessories. See that neat old chandelier? I can just visualize it above the table to give your meals a nice ambiance.”
Denny started to polish the table and Mrs. Cutter said, “I’ll take the furniture and the chandelier.”
Beau led the group to some living room furniture and said, “There are some interesting pieces here that you could put into groups to make your living room like a comfortable reading room or place to share a before dinner drink or after dinner drink or just sit and visit. A couple of the pieces could stand to be reupholstered. In fact, you could fix them to all have similar material at a minimum of cost. I think it would be a drawing card for your establishment.
Beau directed Mrs. Cutter to different pieces and she selected the ones that she wanted. Beau said, “Mrs. Cutter, I’m really excited about how your house is going to turn out and can hardly wait to come and see it when you are ready for Denny’s and my help. Now is there anything else we can help you with?”
“Beau and Denny, our youngest daughter is getting married in a few weeks, We would like to give a nice bedroom set to put into their bedroom until they can afford to get what they want. They aren’t into antiques so some really good used furniture would probably be best.” Mrs. Cutter said, as she looked around.
Denny said, “Ma’am, I see a nice set that must have just come in. It looks like it is solid maple and would be perfect for child’s room later on. It looks like we have the complete set, with two dressers and two end tables. Look at this, the drawers are dove tailed so that means it is nice and sturdy and looks like it will last forever.”
“My goodness, you two young men know a lot about furniture. Ellen was right. You two young gentlemen are good salesmen. You tell it like it is and you don’t pressure people to buy. You give them the reasons why they should consider the things. I really appreciate the effort that you two young men have taken to show me what I was looking for, especially on a Saturday afternoon.”
“Now can you tell me how much I owe, and when you can deliver the merchandise?” Mrs. Cutter asked.
“Ma’am, we’re going to turn you over to Mr. Weaver. He’ll take care of the money and arrange for delivery. Let me give you my number, and you can call us when you would like for us to come and discuss the finishing touches. I’ll get one of my brothers or Dads to bring to us to your house.”
Beau handed Mrs. Cutter a card with his name and phone number.
Mrs. Cutter was talking to Mr. Weaver when Chip and Reg came in. When Chip saw Beau he practically jumped in Beau’s arms and asked, “General, what are you and Denny doing here?”
“Your Granddad Weaver asked us to help for a while. What are you doing here?” Beau asked.
“We came to tell Grandpa and Grandma, Granddad and Grandmother that we were going to eat at 5:30 tomorrow night.” Chip answered.
Beau put Chip down and Chip went to talk to his grandparents. Beau asked, “Uncle Reg, could you drop us off?”
“Of course.” Reg answered as Adam and Aaron came in.
Beau looked at them and asked, “Are you two wimps following us or what?”
Adam said, “Why on Earth would anyone want to follow you guys? Besides all we need to do is sniff and find you.”
Aaron said, “Actually, we’re supposed to meet my mother.”
Beau said, “You mean Mrs. Cutter is your Mother?”
“Yes.” said Aaron.
Just then Mrs. Cutter came to where the guys were standing and Beau said, “Mrs. Cutter, I can’t believe this ugly kid here is your son. How can anyone as pretty as you have such an ugly child? Boy, I hope Aaron’s Hunt cousins aren’t as ugly as him.”
Aaron dove for Beau but he ducked behind Mrs. Cutter. “Mrs. Cutter, Denny and I will be able to help you anytime you want. We’ll just get Ying and Yang here to drive us to your house. Ying can’t refuse his mother’s request.”
Beau and Denny walked Adam, Aaron and Mrs. Cutter to the door and hugged them.
Mr. Weaver handed Chip two checks and said, “This one is for Denny and this one is for Beau.”
Chip handed the checks to the guys and Beau asked, “What’s this for sir?”
“Beau and Denny, that’s your commission for the sale you just made. Now we really want to visit with you more about what you think we should do to make our store more attractive. We also would like for the two of you to consider working here a few hours a week. You already have two loyal clients and I’m sure that you two will develop a nice following.”
Beau looked at Denny and said, “Sir, let us see if we can set something up for early next week. It will need to be an evening meeting, since everyone else has other jobs; I have to go now since we’re having out of town guests and I have an early sitting job. Talk to you soon.”
Reg dropped Denny off and Beau came bounding in. “Is Aunt Nan here yet?”
Danny said, “She left already when she found out she was going to be sharing the house with you.”
“That does it. I’m trading you in for a new model.” Beau said.
“Okay cry boy, she’s in the kitchen helping Jeff fix dinner. Too bad you and Tommy won’t be here to share the dinner. At least my sitting job doesn’t start until 7:00.” Danny taunted.
Beau went into the kitchen and hugged Mrs. Chandler. He warned, “Don’t fall in love with all my brothers.” He looked at the clock and said, “I’m due at my sitting job in half an hour. I’ll talk to you tomorrow; I have to change and get ready.”
Tommy and Beau left. It seemed ironic that both guys had a sitting job that started at four o’clock. Carole Anne and Dylan arrived and we had a nice dinner. Jason and Carole Anne did the dishes while Dylan and Jeff delivered Danny.
Jason arranged his normal slumber party and the four guys disappeared downstairs. Mrs. T. arrived with the Morrisons, Ben and Josh. Jeff charmed the Morrisons and Mrs., Chandler. Mrs. T. said, “Now you see where Beau gets his out going approach.”
“Heck Grams, don’t blame me. He made $100.00 for 90 minutes work today and all we did was spend money. He found a new girl friend in Aaron’s Mother and he’s at work again.”
Just then Jason came in and asked, “D. Dad, can we make some popcorn and get something to drink, please?”
Before I could answer, Carole Anne said, “Jason, you make the popcorn and I’ll make each of you guys a thick milk shake. The guys helped her to the kitchen and Mrs. Morrison and Aunt Nan followed.
The guys took their food downstairs and when they finished, we could hear them in the kitchen. They came in and Jason said, “Goodnight everyone, we’re going to take a shower. Tommy said we could sleep in his bed.” He kissed and hugged everyone good night.
That was the signal for everyone to leave after making plans for Sunday. Jeff and I had cleared the dishes we had used and Jeff started the dishwasher. At 11:30 Danny came in. He was exuberant. He had another $50.00, Mrs. Chandler went to bed and Jeff and I decided to go to bed and let Tommy and Beau lock up when they came in.
To be continued...
