Chapter 29
The Renewal

It was actually 8:00 before anyone came into the room.  Beau shook Jeff and said, “Jeff, you need to get up and go get Danny and bring him back here, so he can wear some of my clothes.”

We all assembled in the kitchen and ate, and Jeff left to retrieve Danny.  When they came back, Beau and Danny disappeared.  When the two guys came into the kitchen, Jason started. “Beau, what did you do to Danny?  Did you cut his hair?  Are those your clothes?  What’s going on?  Did you clean the bathroom?”

Everyone was laughing except Danny.  He had no idea what was going on.

Tommy said, “We need to take two cars to church.  There is no way the six of us can fit in one car.”

Jeff took Danny, Beau, and Jason.  Tommy rode with me.  We went to our usual seats and it was like we were magnets.  We had people joining us from everywhere.  Poor Danny was overwhelmed.  However, when Dan Crawford came in, Danny excused himself and went and sat beside him.  Danny motioned for Dylan to sit on the other side of him when he came in.

Jeff was watching for the Carvers, and Jason and Chip went to sit beside them.  The service began, and everyone was perfect as usual.  It was just a little different seating arrangement than normal.  During the service, Father Gilbert announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, you really need to come to the Sunrise Service, next Sunday.  Mister Jeff Wilson and his wonderful young people will be providing the music.  If I were a betting man, I would bet that they will be singing at all three services, but you'd better come early to get a good seat.”

When it was time for the benediction, Father Gilbert said, “Today, Doctor Wilson’s boys will sing The Lord’s Prayer.”  Tommy, Beau and Jeff went forward, just like they knew it was going to happen.  They sang, and I really believe that it was different than anything they had ever done before.

The recessional was finished, and everyone was leaving.  The guys were busy introducing the Carver’s to as many people as they could.

The people were leaving and Beau came to me and said, “D. Dad, I have to go home.  I wet my pants.”

Jason said, “You did not.”

“Yes I did.”  Beau said, as he spit on his finger and rubbed his pants.  “See, I told you.”

Coach Winston came to the guys and said, “Guys, we’re going to have to postpone our meeting, today.  I forgot that we were due in Omaha for a wedding this afternoon.”

Beau said, “Likely story.  We’ll see if we can get together sometime this week.”

Beau announced, “We’re going to the Arby’s restaurant for lunch, since we don’t have time for anything else.  Everyone is welcome to join us, but it’s Dutch treat.  I’m not paying for all of you hungry wolves.”

We walked to the parking lot and Jeff asked, “Dylan, do you have a ride?”

“Yep, I’m parked right next to your T-Bird.”  Dylan answered.

We got to the parking lot and there sat a shiny black Corvette next to Jeff’s car.

“I’m riding with Dylan.” Danny announced.

We caravanned to the Arby’s restaurant, and the guys made sure Aunt Cora and Grams went first and helped them get seated.  Jeff and Beau went next, because they had a time crunch.

Dylan paid for Dan and Danny, which I thought was really weird.  We rearranged the little tables, since there were more people there than anyone expected.  The Carvers were making some good contacts.

Jeff and Beau finished, and Tommy and Jason were left to be the hosts.  The two guys went home and got dressed and went to the church.  I took Tommy and Jason home, and got ready to go to the church since the Davises were patients of mine.

At the church, Beau met Mr. and Mrs. Davis when they arrived.  He put a heart with an arrow through it on Mr. Davis’s lapel and then put a matching pendant around Mrs. Davis’s neck and said, “These are from Jeff and me to you help you remember this special day.”

When I arrived the church was over half full, and I slipped into a pew and found myself sitting beside Brad and Alex West.  Hal and his family were right in front of us.  I was soon joined by Dan, Dylan and Danny.  Mrs. T. came in with Jane, and sat at the end of our pew.

The service began, and Beau wheeled Mr. Davis to the Altar area.  He then disappeared and escorted Mrs. Davis down aisle as Jeff played Here Comes the Bride.  Beau disappeared again, and at the appropriate time, came forward and sang Sunrise Sunset, with special words.  He disappeared and then stood and sang True Love, and handed the Davises their new rings.  As they placed them on each others fingers, Beau sang, I Love You Truly.  The service concluded and Beau escorted them down the aisle.  He got them situated, so they could greet those of us who came to celebrate with them and vanished.

I was waiting for the two guys, when I saw the Davises go to them and hand them each an envelope.  The guys tried to give them back.  Mr. Davis put his hand on Beau’s mouth and pulled him closer so he could give him a kiss on the lips.  Mrs. Davis did the same to Jeff.

Mr. Davis wrote on his slate.  “We think of you as the two sons, we lost.  You are both so unassuming.  We love you both.”

Beau went down, and I thought Jeff was about go too, but he realized what had happened to Beau, and held him close.  Beau revived and said, “Get your hands of me you creep.  What are our new Grandparents going to think of us?”

The guys hugged the Davises and escorted them to their van.  Everyone was waiting to throw birdseed at them as they left the church.

Jeff went back and locked the organ, and as we went to the parking lot, Dylan, Dan and Danny were waiting for us.

Beau said, “Okay men, back to Dad’s house, we’ll make sloppy Joes, BEER, French fries, BEER, a salad, BEER, and a dessert, if there is time.

We drove to the house and Jason and Tommy were already cooking.  Beau asked, “What are we having?”

Jason said, “Beer, Scotch, Bourbon, Vodka and Gin.”

“What about Rum?” Beau asked.

“We couldn’t find any.  You must have drunk it.  Now, why don’t you guys get out of those ridiculous costumes?  You’ll ruin the only good clothes you have with dinner.” Tommy said.  He added, “There is not sufficient time to mess around either.”

Beau and Danny went and changed into jeans and a sweat shirt.  Jeff, Dan, Dylan and I shed our jackets and ties.

The guys announced that dinner was ready.  They had fixed soup, salad, and rolls, which were on the table.  The soup bowls were cleared and they served Barbecued ribs, home fries and a vegetable medley, family style.

They had put several paper napkins at each plate.  Dylan asked, “Do you always eat like this?”

Beau said, “No, we usually have thirty people here, and we served them water and stale toast.  If we’re lucky, and one of us catches a squirrel we might have meat.”

Beau looked at his plate and said, “I guess the guys got lucky today and found a couple good sized skunks to be able to fix this.  They probably raided the neighbor’s root cellar to get the vegetables.”

Everyone was laughing, and Jason said, “Actually, we borrowed the skunks from the Montgomery’s inventory, and told them that you would replenish the number tomorrow.  I guess you won’t be sleeping in the house for a while.”

Everyone was almost in hysterics, and Dan said, “You people are out of control.  Why did Beau pass out today when my Aunt and Uncle were talking to you?”

Beau said, “Sheriff, you didn’t give much of a transition there, did you?  They told us they loved us, and they looked at us as the two sons they lost.”

Jeff picked up, “They handed us envelopes and we tried to hand them back but they wouldn’t consider that.”

Jason asked, “What was in the envelopes, and what was it for?”

Beau said, “I don’t know.  I didn’t open mine.  It’s in my blazer pocket.”

Jeff said, “Mine is still unopened too, and is in my jacket pocket.”

Jason excused himself and retrieved the envelopes and handed them to the guys and said, “Now, open them; we want to know what is in them.”

The guys opened the envelopes and there were five $100.00 bills in each envelop and each of them had a note saying, “Thank you for being the wonderful young men you are.  Your Father must be very proud of you.”

They were signed with a big “D”.

Beau started to go down again, but Danny grabbed hold of him and Dylan grabbed Jeff.

Dan said, “Guys, get used to them.  That is the way they operate.  You both have hit a soft spot in them that has needed to be filled for a long time.  Please accept that they are doing this because they love and respect you.”

Jeff looked at the clock and said, “I’m sorry that we have to break this up, but we need to get Danny back.”

Dan said, “I’ll drop him off, and then shoot on home and take a nap before I have to go on duty at midnight.”

Danny hugged everyone as he was leaving.  He whispered something to Beau and they both laughed.

Beau said, “Since you two fixed dinner, I’ll clean the mess you made.  I’ll probably still be working when you get up in the morning.  Jeff and Dylan helped him, and they were done in no time.

Dylan, Jeff and I went to the living room and visited.  Dylan really didn’t want to talk about himself.  He was more interested in talking about Beau, Tommy and Jason.  At 8:30, he got up and hugged us and profusely thanked us for including him in the day.”

Beau came walking in with a basket of clean laundry.  “Dylan, you can leave the Bat mobile here.  I’ll take care of it and drive it to work in the salt mines tomorrow.”  Beau hugged Dylan and disappeared up the steps with the laundry.  Dylan had no more than left, when Spencer came in with Kevin and Tyler.

I looked at the clock and thought to myself that something has to be wrong. Spencer didn’t waste any time.  “D. Dad and Jeff, I’m sorry for barging in so late, but something happened at the Crosby’s house, that I need to talk to you about.  Is Beau here?”

Beau was coming down the stairs with more dirty clothes and said, “I’m not here.  Did you miss me or something?”

“Knock it off, Beau.  This is serious.”  Beau sat down and listened as Spencer told this story.

“Last night, when I was sitting with Trey, he had a nightmare and was crying, ‘Billy, don't go back in there, please.  You’ll get hurt.’  He said it over and over, and finally I got him settled and was holding him when the Crosbys came home.”

“I told them what had happened, and Mrs. Crosby told me Trey’s story.  Trey is adopted, and was orphaned when the rest of his family died in a fire.  Trey’s older brother, Billy, had carried Trey out and went back to find his sister and his parents and was trapped by the fire.”

“I really think that Trey needs to talk to Uncle Josh, and so maybe Trey can understand why he keeps having the same awful dream.  Jeff and Beau, why don’t you get the Crosbys and Uncle Josh here?  Tell them to bring Trey and we’ll bring Chip to help divert his attention.” Spencer finally stopped.

Beau hugged Spencer and said, “I’ll call Dad Josh in the morning, then I’ll call the Crosbys and have them bring Trey and Ranger.  Do the Crosbys know what you have in mind?”

Spencer laughed and said, “No, I was lying in bed just now, thinking about Trey, and this idea came to me.  I hope it works.”

Jeff spoke up and said, “Spencer, for an eleven year old, you sure do worry about other people a lot.”

Spencer said, “When you have been through what Tyler and I have been, you become sensitive to other people’s needs.  I’ve been taking lessons from you and Beau.”

The three guys left, and Jeff, Beau and I sat there just shaking our heads.  We trooped up the stairs and Jeff and I were gone before our heads hit the pillow.

To be continued...

Editor's Notes:

Spencer and Beau are really special people.  I think most everyone in this story are special. This is one of the nicest stories I have had the pleasure of reading and editing since I started doing this.  I want to meet these people so I can give them all nice hugs.
