Chapter 28
Dental Day

I awoke and looked at the clock and it said 8:00.  I shook Jeff and pointed at the clock.  He jumped out of bed before he could do anything, four young guys were laughing.

Jeff looked at them and asked, “Do you like the merchandise?”

Jason said, “Not too bad for an old man.  Now come on, we’re ready to exercise.”

Jeff quickly dressed in a pair of sweat pants, a sweat shirt and sneakers.

Jason said, “Come on Dad, you have to come too.”

“Where are Tommy and Beau?” Jeff asked.

“They’re being cranks this morning.” Larry said.

Jeff said, “Okay men, let’s go.  Dad will be down shortly.”

I got ready and then went to check on Tommy and Beau, but the bedroom was empty.  I went into the kitchen and there was a sign on the coffee pot. NO COFFEE UNTIL AFTER EXERCISES.  GET YOUR BOTTOM TO THE BASEMENT NOW!

I went downstairs and the seven guys were working out.  Jason said “Dad, give us five one hand push ups.”

I did as I was told and then said, “Okay you creeps, let me see you do it.”

Jeff and Tommy did five but Beau could only do three and the nine year olds couldn’t do any.  I called out, “Stop guys before you hurt your bodies.  Your bodies haven’t developed enough to do that yet.”

Jeff said, “Okay everyone, do fifty sit-ups.”  The young people all breezed through them, but I started to struggle after 40.

Davey looked at me and said, “I guess when you get to be old, you run out of gas.”

Jeff was laughing and said, “Time to run in place for five minutes.”  Jeff started to count a cadence. Soon everyone joined in and time passed quickly.

As we were going up the steps, Beau said, “Jeff and I have the first two dental appointments, so we’re going to shower while you guys fix breakfast.”

Jeff and Beau showered and dressed and came down carrying two laundry baskets.  Everyone ate and Beau announced, I have the 9:00 appointment, Jeff’s appointment is for 9:45 and Jason's is at 10:30.  Tommy, you have 11:15, then Kenny's is at 1:00 and Drew has his at 1:45.  Dad you need to pick Chip up for his appointment at 2:30 and then your appointment will be at 3:15.”

Beau added, “I have the Carver’s booked for the two Saturdays after Easter.  After that, I’m out of the scheduling business.  Everyone will just have to schedule themselves.”

As the two guys were leaving, Jeff said, “Beau and I are going to stop by the church and practice for tomorrow afternoon.”

“Yes, and we have to stop by the Waters' Jewelry Store after that so we will see you all later.” Beau added.

Mrs. Carver, whose name was Lolita, took Beau to the cleaning area.  After she did the initial look see, she said, “I guess it’s been a long time since your teeth were cleaned.”

Beau said, “I really don’t think that they have ever been cleaned.  I can’t even remember the last time I was to a dentist.”

Mrs. Carver would soon be known as Aunt Lo talked to Beau the entire time she was working.  She explained each step that she was doing.  When she finished the polishing, she took Beau to the Dentist’s area.  “Geo, this is Beau Benson.  He’s the young man who scheduled us today, and for two subsequent Saturdays.”

Dr. Geo shook hands with Beau and had him get in the chair.  Dr. Carver did a thorough exam and then looked at the x-rays and said, “Your teeth are almost perfect.  You must have had an excellent orthodontist.”

“Sir, I’ve never been to an orthodontist.  In fact, I can’t remember the last time I saw a dentist.”  Beau said.

“Well, you either eat a good balanced diet or you have some very good genes, because your teeth are absolutely beautiful.  Now I am going to do an oral screening for cancer.  Beau, I can’t find a thing wrong.  We will want to watch your wisdom teeth to make sure they don’t cause you problems when they come in.  Beau you’re out of here.”

“Who do I pay?” Beau asked.

Geo said, “I didn’t have my receptionist come in, so I guess you will have to settle with me.  Let’s go to the computer.”

They went to the reception area and Dr. Carver punched in some information and said, “Beau, the charge for today is $78.00.”

Without blinking, Beau pulled out $80.00 and handed it to Dr. Carver.  He gave his $2.00 in change and Beau said, “Dr. Geo, you really should do something out of the ordinary, like keep your practice open on Saturdays and then take Mondays off.  This would provide people, who can’t get in on normal days, a chance to see you.  Just think, then you and your wife won’t have to fight the crowds when you go shopping on Mondays.”

“I’m also going to talk to Uncle Josh and Uncle Ben and maybe you could work out a deal to take care of the people at the two homes where they are the Directors.”  Beau said.

Tommy and Jason came in and Jason asked, “Did it hurt?  Did you have to have any shots?”

Beau scrunched up his face and said, “This mean Dr. Geo pulled all my teeth and gave me seven shots.”

Before Beau could say anything else, Dr. Carver turned Beau upside down and started shaking him.  “See, his teeth are so bad they rattle.”

Tommy piped up, “Sir, that’s not his teeth that are rattling that’s the loose screws running around in his head.”  Dr. Carver and Jason started to laugh.  Geo put Beau down and hugged him.  Mrs. Carver came out and said “Geo, Jeff is ready for you.  If all these guys have teeth like this, we’ll never make any money.”

She looked at the guys and said, “Which of you is Jason Powers?”  Jason got up and went with her.

Jeff came out with Geo and paid his bill with his debit card and Beau said, “Dr. Geo, you and your lovely wife should come to church.  That way you could meet people and they would get to know that you were a dentist.”

“You mean your church would accept black people?” Dr. Carver asked.

“Dr. Carver!” admonished Beau.  “We have a number of people with darker pigmentation who are members of our church.  In fact you’ll be meeting one of them this afternoon.  Mrs. Winston is also a dentist isn’t she?”

Jeff said, “Beau is absolutely right.  We’re going to go at 11:00 tomorrow.  Why don’t you join us?

“Beau turned to Tommy and said, “I may have some loose screws, but at least certain parts of my anatomy are not the size of beebees.”  He hugged Tommy and the two guys left.

Lo came out and said, “It’s you turn, Mr. Simmons.”

“Ma’am, please call me Tommy.”

Lo looked at him and said, “Then you need to call me Lo.”

Jason had no cavities but Dr. Carver said, “Jason, you may want to see an orthodontist to check your teeth alignment.  They look fine but you should see one, just to be sure.  Do you want a list if orthodontists?”

“That’s okay sir.  I’ll call Derek and Doug’s Dad.  He’s the person who told us about you and your wife.” Jason said.  Jason paid for his appointment with his bank card and was sitting reading while he waited for Tommy.

Tommy had a filling that might need to be replaced eventually, but was fine for now.  Tommy paid with cash.”

Kenny and Drew arrived before 1:00.  They both had notebooks with them and were working when Lo took Kenny.  The only thing wrong was a chipped tooth that Geo recommended that Kenny might want to get fixed, for cosmetic reasons only.  Kenny paid with cash.

Kenny was busy working, while Drew was having a different experience.  Lo was lecturing him about taking better care of his teeth.  After Geo did his exam and checked Drew’s x-rays, he said, “Drew, I hate to tell you this, but we need to make two appointments as soon as possible to get those teeth fixed so you won’t lose them.”

Chip and I had been in the waiting room when Lo came to get Chip.  “Ma’am, this isn’t going to hurt too much is it?”

“I hope not Chip.”  She was very gentle and I could hear her talking to Chip as she worked.

Drew and Dr. Carver came out and Drew said, “Dr. Geo, how soon can I get those two appointments out of the way?”

“Drew, I'll cut you a deal, “I can come in early on Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30, and then you won’t have to miss school and I won’t be running behind schedule, since you would be the first appointment of the day.”

“That would be great, Sir.”  Drew said.

Kenny started talking to me so I didn’t see what was happening as Drew paid cash for his appointment.  Drew turned to me and said, “You tell Beau I’m going to get even with him.  This is all his fault.  Now I’ll probably be spending more time in the dentist chair than in the bathroom.”

Dr. Carver said, “You better spend a lot more time brushing those pearls of yours or you’ll be spending even more time in here than you think.”  Drew and Kenny shook Geo’s hand.

He came over to me and said, “I assume that you are Doctor Jack Wilson and I'm just dieing to know what your connection to all these fantastic young people is.”

Before I could say anything, Lo came and said, “Geo, Chip is in your chair, ready for you to check.  Doctor Wilson, I am ready for you now,”

She did a preliminary scan of my mouth and asked, “When was the last time your teeth were cleaned?”

“I think it was about nine months ago.  I’d have to check to be sure.” I answered expecting to get a lecture about not taking the proper care of my teeth.

“Well, you could have fooled me, I was guessing a month ago.” she said.

“I’m sure it was the Wednesday before Labor Day, now that I think about it.”

She started to work and I could hear Chip and Dr. Geo talking.  Dr. Geo said, “Chipper, your teeth are beautiful just like Jeff’s, Beau, and Jason’s.  I’m going to give you a new tooth brush that I want you to use at least two times a day.”

They walked to the reception area and I heard Chip say, “Daddy, I don’t have any cavities.  Look, Dr. Geo gave me a new tooth brush.”

Reg paid the bill and said, “Tell Doctor Dad that I kidnapped my son.  I think my wife and I are scheduled to see you in three weeks.  Thank you for making Chip’s first dentist visit a good experience.”  Chip kissed Dr. Carver and the Weavers departed.

My teeth had been polished and Geo checked my teeth and my x-rays and said, Doctor Wilson, I hate to tell you this, but you have a very small cavity on you back molar on the lower right side.  We need to get it taken care of to keep it from growing.  I can’t believe you only have one filling and one small cavity in your mouth.  That is remarkable for a person of 34 or 35 with that many wonderful young men in your life.”

I thanked him and we went to the front.  I asked, “How much do I owe you for the eight appointments?”

“Everyone is paid for but you.  The guys each paid their own bills.” Geo said.

“Jeff is covered by my insurance, Jason, Tommy and Beau would be paid by the state.  I’m sure Kenny’s father has insurance too, and I know for a fact that Chip is covered by his mother’s insurance.  I think I need to have a discussion with these young people.  They’re trying to grow up too fast.” I sighed.

As I was leaving, the Carvers said, “We’ve been invited to join at church tomorrow.  The guys assured us it would be fine.”

“We’ll save you a seat, but be prepared to be surrounded by a bunch handsome looking men and beautiful women.  Thanks for taking care of us on a Saturday.” I said, as I shook their hands.

Jeff and Beau had gone to church and practiced and swung by the jewelry store and Beau picked up his purchases.  Everyone fixed their own lunch and the three guys started to clean while Jeff did the laundry.

When I got home, I called everyone together and basically chewed the four guys out.  Jason looked at me and said, “Dad, we don’t want to be a burden and besides, if we can pay for ourselves, why should you get upset?  Now you and Jeff go shopping for groceries, we’ll fix dinner while you’re gone.”

Jeff and I shrugged and did as we were told.  The guys had made a shopping list so there wasn’t much question as to what they wanted.  When we got home Jason and Tommy unloaded the car and Beau put the things away.  In no time we were eating a casserole, salad and seasoned toast.

Everyone was sharing and talking about what was coming up.  Beau said, “Jeff, you are to pick Danny up at 9:30.  The Sheriff is going to meet us at the church.”

I added, “The Carver’s are going to be joining us too, I think.”

Jeff said, “I asked Dylan Morrison to join us.”

Tommy interjected, “I think we’ll need a bigger church.  Beau we need to get ready to go.  Sorry to stick you all with the dishes.”

“Yeah, this is the way you two planned so I would be stuck with the dishes again.” agonized Jason.

The two guys left and the three of us made short order of the dishes.  The phone rang and Jeff answered.  “Dad, Mr. Montgomery wants to know if Jason can come over until 9:30.”

Jason looked at me and I said feigning being disgusted, “I guess so.”

Jason hugged me and took off out the back door.  Jeff and I were sitting in the living room and Jeff was working on something.  He moved to the piano and started to play something I didn’t recognize and then I could hear him singing as he played.

The doorbell rang and Kenny and Drew just walked in.  Jeff came into the living room and asked, “What’s up, guys?”

“D. Dad and Jeff, can we please talk?  We have some questions.” Kenny asked.

Jeff said, “Go for it.”

Drew asked, “How do you know if you are in love?”

I spoke up and said, “Guys, that's something only the people involved can determine.”

Jeff said, “Why don’t you two stop beating around the bush and tell us what’s happening.”

Kenny said, “We think we are in love with each other, but so far we have done nothing but touch each other.”

Jeff said, “I’m probably going to say some things that you are not going to like, but please listen.  First, you’re both sixteen, and let’s face it; you have different pigmentations so people will naturally talk, if you two are together all the time.  People know that you work and play baseball together, so it’s expected that you would be good friends.”

“But you really need to spend some time apart, physically.  You can always talk to each other on the phone.  Probably the most important thing is to talk to Aunt Cora and Kenny’s parents, and tell them how you feel.”

Drew said, “You sound like you were listening to our conversations with them, but they suggested we talk with you two.”

Jeff interrupted and said, “Guys, I don’t care what you do when you are alone where no one will see you, but please promise us that you won’t have anal sex until you have been graduated from high school and are eighteen.  Since I think both of you will be eighteen before you are graduated, then I guess that you need to get yourselves graduated.”

“Drew asked, “What about you D. Dad?”

I tried to decide what to say and started.  “Jeff is my son, so it is natural that we are together most of the time, but you don’t see us doing anything in public.  I agree with Jeff’s assessment.  I don’t care if you pleasure each other with your hands, orally, or your bodies, but Jeff is correct.  If you penetrate each other, you must be prepared to be loyal to each other forever.”

Both guys had tears in their eyes, Kenny said, “Drew, I told you we shouldn’t talk to them.  We already knew what they would say.”

Drew said, “Now we can be sure that Jeff’s Gestapo is going to be watching everything we do.”

Jeff caught Drew by surprise and put him on the floor and was holding him in a pinned position.  “Take that back, or I’ll take all of your clothes off and burn them.”  Jeff said, as he leaned down and kissed Drew on the lips.  I pulled Kenny close to me and hugged him.

Jason came in and said, “Oh no, another love in.  How come I keep missing them?”  He caught Kenny by surprised and gave him a Chipper kiss.  He then climbed on Drew in front of Jeff and said, “Drew, you must have been really bad.  Let me make it better.”  He gave Drew a kiss.

“Okay, I gotta go to bed before I get whipped.  Goodnight you wimpy adults.” Jason said, as he dashed up the steps.

Kenny started to laugh, “Jason is as bad as Beau.  He diffused a tense situation without knowing what he was doing.  Thank you for talking to us.”

We hugged the two guys as they left.

Jeff and I went to our room and got ready for bed.  Neither one of us was interested in anything sexual; I think we were both mentally exhausted.  I didn’t even hear Beau or Tommy come in.

To be continued...

Editor's Notes:

There you have another action packed chapter. As you could tell, there are always great lessons to be learned in this story.

Dr. Carver and his wife are wonderful people. It was nice that they decided to attend the church with everyone else. I am sure they will be accepted completely.

I was sure that Drew and Kenny were in love, even if neither of them realized it yet.

I really love this story and I am so happy that I have had the opportunity to edit it.  Of course if I had been more careful, I would have managed to edit it all instead of forgetting a chapter here and there. I have no idea how I managed to miss editing a chapter, but now it is finished, and ready for you to enjoy as much as all the rest of this wonderful story.
