Chapter 30
Trey’s Therapy

Everybody’s day went fine and Beau and Jeff had everyone set for the evening.  When I picked the guys up, Spencer and Beau were making the final plans for the night.

Everyone arrived at 7:00, including Ranger.  Chip looked at Ranger and asked, “The dog won’t bite me will he?”

Beau said, “Ranger won’t bite you unless you bite him first or hurt Trey.”

“I’ll be good.” Chip said.

“Okay, you all go downstairs and make sure that Davey and Jason aren’t getting into trouble.”  Beau said, “Trey, we are going to need to talk to you, in a little while.”  The guys and Ranger took off.

Spencer started.  He told Josh what happened Saturday night.  “Mr. and Mrs. Crosby, would you please tell everyone the story of how you came to adopt Trey, and why he was an orphan?”

The Crosbys told the entire story about how they came to adopt Trey.

Beau and Spencer explained what they thought about Trey’s nightmare.  We’d like to help Trey understand why he keeps having the same nightmare repeatedly.  “If we go too fast, or push too hard, please tell us to back off.”  Spencer said.

Beau went and got Trey and Ranger.  They came in and Beau and Spencer had Trey sit between them.  Ranger lay down at his feet.

Beau started, “Trey, see that man over there?   That is my Dad Josh.  He’s going to adopt me, and make me his son?”

“What about Doctor Wilson? I thought he was your Daddy.”  Trey said.

“No, he’s my foster father.  He is just taking care of me, until I get adopted and our house is ready in May.”

Spencer took over.  “Trey, do you remember how you got Ranger?”

“Yes, we went to the pound and picked him out, and took him home.”  Trey answered.

“So you adopted him, right?” Spencer questioned.

“I guess so.” said Trey.

“You love Ranger, and he loves you, even though he’s adopted, right?”  Spencer asked and Trey nodded yes.

“Trey, would you tell Uncle Josh about the nightmare you keep having?” Spencer asked.

“You mean about the fire and Billy?” Trey asked, and Spencer shook his head yes.

Trey told about his dream, and Josh asked, “Trey, why do you think you keep having the same dream about a boy called Billy, and a fire?”

“I don’t know.  It seems so real, and Billy always looks the same.  He seems to be about as big as Spencer, and there is a house on fire with lots of smoke.” Trey said, with tears in his eyes.

Beau spoke up and said, “Trey, your Daddy and Mother are going to tell you some things, and I want you to listen to them, before you ask any questions.”

Mr. Crosby started, “Trey, Billy and the fire, really happened.  Billy was your brother.  He carried you out of the burning house, and handed you to a neighbor.  Then he went back in to find your sister Emily, and get her out. Your parents, Billy and Emily, all died of having breathed too much smoke, so your Mother and I adopted you.

“Did you find me in a pound?” Trey asked.

“No, Son, we picked you up at the hospital, because they wanted to check you to make sure you were okay.” Mrs. Crosby said.

“Okay, but you still love me, even though I’m adopted, right because I love you?”  Trey asked, and then started again, “What did they do with my other Mommy, Daddy, Billy and Emily?”

“They are buried, not very far from here.” Mr. Crosby said.

Beau spoke and said, “Their bodies were buried, but their souls are in heaven, watching over you.  I’ll bet Billy tells Ranger to make sure that no one hurts you.”

Ranger raised his head and yipped twice.

You and Ranger go get the monsters in the basement, while Spencer and I fix some snacks.”  Beau suggested.

The four boys and Ranger reappeared, and the six guys had a cup of hot chocolate and some gooey samores.   Beau even gave Ranger a doggy chew.  Ranger wouldn’t touch it until Trey nodded his head yes.

Colin came in the back door, and asked, “Is that all you guys ever do, eat, eat and eat?”

Chip looked at him and said, “Only as much as we can, Mr. Montgomery.”

Jason said, “We’ll be finished shortly.  D. Dad and the adults are in the living room.”  Colin knew the Crosbys so no introductions were needed.  Davey got his jacket and shoes and the Montgomerys left.

The rest of us went into the kitchen.  Josh, who was taking Chip and Spencer home, said, “Come on men, we need to go.”

Trey asked, “Beau, may I have a baggie, please?”

Beau handed him a plastic bag and Trey said, “Ranger, put your snack in the bag.”  Ranger didn’t move; and Trey said, “I mean now.”

Ranger dropped the chew stick into the bag and Trey closed it and said, “Good man, you can finish it when you get home.”  Trey then handed it to Ranger who carried the bag carefully in his mouth as they left.

We went upstairs, and Beau came into our room and asked, “So, how did Spencer and I do?  Did we really screw up?”

I pulled him close and said, “You guys were outstanding.  I’ll give you guys an 11 out of 10.”

Jeff said, “I’m giving you both zeroes because you are making the rest of us look stupid.”

Beau attacked Jeff and kissed him, and then did likewise to me, and left.

Tuesday was a routine day when Jeff went to his counseling/ psychology class and announced, “Something happened over the weekend, and I am not fabricating this story.  I want you to listen as I tell the story, and then I want to hear you people decide what we could do to help the person involved, and then I will tell you what really happened.”

Jeff told Trey’s story but carefully left out certain parts.  He then asked the class to decide what should be done.  Jeff finally stopped the discussions and said, “Now, I am going to tell you the rest of the story, and tell you what two people you have already met, decided to do about the problem. And I think they did an outstanding job.”

Jeff told the rest of the story and Dylan said, “One of the young men must be Beau.”

Mitch spoke up and said, “I’m betting the other person was Spencer.”

“You guys are absolutely correct.  Beau sat for Trey two weeks ago, and Spencer sat for him this past weekend.  Trey is like Chip.  You just want to take and love him to death.  I have to tell you about Trey’s dog, Ranger.”

Jeff told about Ranger and finished with the story of the treat and the baggie and everyone was laughing.  Jeff said, “Okay class, that’s a wrap for today.  I’ll see everyone on Thursday.”

“Mitch, Dylan and Grant are you free for lunch?” Jeff asked.

Grant said, “I’m meeting Bethanne at the Union.”

“Cool, we’ll go with you to make sure that you behave yourselves.  That is if you don’t mind.” Jeff laughed.

They met Bethanne and got their food and Jeff started, “Bethanne, I know you and Barbee can sing.  We need you for the choir on Sunday.  Do you know any other young ladies that can sing and will be staying here this weekend?”

Bethanne looked around and said, “I don’t think Carole Anne is going anywhere this weekend.   I heard her tell someone that her parents were going to be on a cruise.”

Jeff said, “I know Carole Anne.  She is in some of my classes.

Jeff walked over to her and said, “C. A., why don’t you come over and join us?  Bethanne is feeling outnumbered.”  Jeff helped her carry her food to the table.

Carole Anne sat down and said, “I know Bethanne and Grant and I think that you are Mitch and that you work at the club sometimes.  I think you waited on us the last time my parents were here.”  She looked at Dylan and said, “You’re the guy who has a black corvette, and doesn’t talk to anyone.  Are you shy, or do you think you are too good for us?”

Dylan turned white and Carole Anne realized what she said, and apologized.  “I opened my mouth and inserted foot again.  I’m going to leave and come back.”

“Good afternoon Mr. Dylan.  I hope you are enjoying yourself here at our small college.  Now how about telling us three things about you?”

Dylan began, “I’m an only child of an only child.  I have a black car, and I am in love with Danny.”

“Dylan, you can’t be in love with Danny.” Jeff frowned.

“Jeff, I’m in love with him like a brother.  If I were older maybe I could adopt him.”  Dylan retorted.

Jeff said, “Dylan, I think you had better explain who Danny is, so everyone doesn’t find out how weird you are.”

Dylan told them about Danny being the person he mentored at the home and everything that happened this past weekend.

Carole Anne said, “I’m sorry, I have to go.  I have mean teacher who will dock my grade if I’m late for class, right Professor Wilson?” She handed Dylan a card and said, “Call me tonight, and maybe we can get together for a coke or something.”

Carole Anne and Jeff walked to music class and C. A. said, “I hope I didn’t scare Dylan away.  He is so different than I thought he was.”

Jeff said, “Carole Anne, he seems like a really neat caring guy.  He is trying to find his identity and I have the feeling that his family is trying to make him be something that he doesn’t want to be.”

After class, Jeff went back to his office and pulled up Carole Anne’s bio and started to laugh.  “This should be an interesting couple.”

That evening Jeff and Beau were viewing the tapes of baseball practice.  Beau came down and said, “Dad, you’re going to substitute for me tomorrow afternoon at Gigi’s.  Jeff and I are going to be working with the baseball team.

Everyone settled down quickly and the house was silent.

Wednesday was very quiet, even when I went to the Baxter’s to substitute for Beau.  They wouldn’t let me do anything, and I couldn't believe what they had the five year olds doing.

However, at baseball practice, Beau and Jeff were terrorizing the team.  They had the guys and the two coaches working their bottoms off.

Beau went to the mound and said, “Everyone gets three strikes and you’re out of here.”  Kenny was catching when he started   Beau had everyone totally confused by his pitches.  About half way through, Beau yelled, “Burns, take Kenny’s place.  You are going to be the back up catcher.”

The only person to even come close to hitting a pitch was Sammy.  He had a weak foul ball of to the opposite field.  Beau’s next three pitches blew Sammy away.

Jeff had been working with the guys on their fielding skills.  They had Paul hitting flies to the outfielders and Coach Winston had been working with the guys on their bunting skills.

When practice was over, the guys went to Jeff and Beau and said, “Thanks for coming, but don’t come again.”

We all got home at the same time and Beau said, “Everyone get ready.  We’re going to the club for dinner.”

We all put on slacks and sweaters and went to the club.  Mitch saw us and directed us to one of his tables.  “What’s up?  You never come to the club during the week.”

I looked at him and said, “When your son makes you do his work for him, there isn’t time to cook; especially if the oldest three are playing at playing baseball.”

Mitch laughed and then got a serious look and said, “There will be absolutely no tipping tonight.  The veal parmesan looks good.  I’ll be right back.”  He brought four glasses of milk, and a glass of wine for me and five cups of tomato bisques with rolls.  He came back with a mixed greens salad and then brought five pieces of prime rib with a baked potatoes and sautéed squash.

Jason said, “I don’t remember ordering this.”

Mitch said, “You didn’t order it.  That table over there ordered it for you.  They knew that you all needed a lot of help.  Oh, by the way, they already paid for it too.”

When we finished, we walked over to Dylan and the young lady.  Jeff said, “Everyone, this beautiful young lady is Carole Anne Gordon, and you all know the creep with her.  They are going to be singing in the choir with us this weekend.”

Jeff introduced us individually to Carole Anne.  The guys were all very proper.  Jason asked, “Hey Land, did you audition to find the prettiest girl in town or did you have beginner’s luck?”

Jason added, “Dylan is too long so from now on you’re Land Morrison and the young lady is C. A. Gordon.”

We thanked them again for dinner and as we were leaving, Mitch came up to Beau and said, “Sir, I think you dropped something.”

“Forget it Mitchell.  Get your Mother and Barbee a nice corsage for Easter.”  Beau scolded.

When we got home, Tommy came up to me and asked “May I get my Mother and sisters a corsage for Easter?”

“Why are you asking me?  You can do what you want, son.” I told him.

Jeff and I were working in the living room when the phone rang.  Jeff answered and went to get Beau.  Beau came in and took the call, “Mrs. Collier, I hadn’t planned to sit this weekend.  We are having out of town guests. … Just a minute, let me talk to Doctor Wilson. … Dad, is it okay if I baby-sit on Friday night?

“Beau, I am sure the Peoria people will understand, but don’t accept a job for Saturday, since you need to be up early on Sunday morning.”

“Mrs. Collier, I’ll take care of Casey.   When do you need me?” Beau asked.

Beau went back up the steps again and the phone rang again.

Jeff answered again and said, “Just a minute sir, let me get Tommy.”  Jeff called Tommy who came down and took the phone.

“This is Tommy Simmons, how may I help you? … You want me to what? … I really hadn’t planned to sit this weekend, since we are having guests from out of town. … Just a minute. … This family needs me from 5:00 – 12:00 on Friday and 4:00 until 10:00 on Saturday.  What should I do?”

“Tommy, Uncle Lyle will understand.  Dad will be here for you.” Jeff said.

“Okay Mr. Denver, I’ll do it.  Tommy said, as he hung up.

Tommy had no more than hung up than phone rang again, Tommy answered and said, “Jeff or Dad, Grams wants to talk to one of you.  She doesn’t sound happy.”

I took the phone and said, “This is Jack, Mrs. T. what’s wrong?  … Mrs. Tillison, you don’t even know Trey, so why should we get you involved?  Besides Spencer and Beau did a masterful job of helping Trey solve his problem. … Let me get Beau for you.”

Beau took the phone and said, “Grams, I heard Dad’s side of the conversation, and Dad is right.  You don’t know Trey, and besides you already have your plate full taking care of the girls and Uncle Barry’s problems and I have a feeling that we have only just begun there. … I don’t know.  I just don’t feel good about the girls’ situation.  I think there is still some bad things still to come out. … Okay, I’ll let you know if I spot anything, but please remember you can’t worry about everyone, like Jeff. …  Good night Grams.  Tell Aunt Cora I said goodnight.”

Beau hung up and the phone rang again.  Beau answered, “Hi Mr. Crosby, what’s up? … Oh, so you took Trey and Ranger to the grave sites, and what happened? … Trey took four flowers and handed one to Ranger to carry.  When they got to the site, Ranger put his flower on Billy’s grave, and Trey put the other three on the other graves.  … So Trey and Ranger went for a walk? … When Trey came back he said, ‘I am not going to have that dream anymore.  I told my other family I still loved them, but I love my new Daddy and Mommy too.’ … Thanks for letting me know, sir.  I’ll tell Spencer.”

The phone rang again.  Beau who was crying handed the phone to Jeff and sat down beside me and I held him. Jeff turned to Beau and said, “Beau, the coach wants you to get on too.  Beau went to the kitchen. It must have been some discussion from what I heard Jeff saying.  The guys finally hung up and Beau said, “I’m going to bed, and I am not talking to anyone else tonight.”

Jeff and I followed him upstairs and again I think everyone was exhausted.”

To be continued...

Feedback always welcome:
