Chapter 50
“What?” Dusty asked leaning up on his elbow. “I know Ace and he’s as clean as they come.”
“He is baby and we can prove that but if anyone hears the statement, they’ll take it on face value and not bother to investigate anything.”
JR was almost inconsolable. It took Dusty a good twenty minutes to get JR’s emotions under control but by then, JR had fallen asleep.
Dusty managed to get out of bed then looked at his watch to see if it was too early to call Ace. It was almost 7 so he knew he’d be up so he decided to call. Before he placed the call, he thought carefully how he could tell Ace why he and Dusty would be late. He figured he would play it by ear so he called. “Ace it’s Dusty.”
“Hey buddy, what’s up?”
“Look, we’re going to be in a little late.”
“No problem, buddy since I had you two out yesterday on your day off.”
“How are you feeling today?” Dusty asked.
“I’m still sore but my head has cleared.” I said.
“That’s great. Did you get our after action reports?”
“Sure did, thanks for getting them done so quickly.”
“Great,” Dusty said then ended the call then returned to bed with JR.
Bennie was finishing getting dressed then we headed out to the dining room for breakfast. When we walked in, Timmy and Billy were already there drinking their juice. They let me fix a cup of coffee then Billy was right in my lap. “Hi Uncle Ace, when did you put us to bed?”
Bennie giggled as he got his morning juice. “He didn’t but Carl and I did.”
Timmy came over and tried to sit on my lap but there wasn’t enough room so he stood beside me and kissed me on the cheek. “You mean we didn’t wake up?”
Bennie finished his juice then decided to have another. “Nope, you guys were really out of it.”
Gloria brought breakfast in and Billy looked at the eggs. “What are those Miss Gloria, they look funny.”
She took Billy’s fork and put a little on it then held it up to his mouth. “Why not try them?”
I saw him smell the eggs then he slowly opened his mouth. Gloria fed them to him. We watched as he broke into a huge smile. “Mmmmmmmmmmmm, those are yummy.”
“So are they still funny looking mijo?” She asked.
“Yes but they sure do taste good. What are they called?”
“Huevos rancheros,” Gloria answered smiling.
Billy hopped off my lap and took his own seat then dove into his food. He had two helpings along with four slices of toast. He chugged his glass of milk down then let out a very loud belch. “Excuse me,” He said slapping his hand over his mouth.
We all broke out laughing and Judy was trying to keep a straight face but lost the battle as she was laughing along with the rest of us. “Do you feel better now son?”
Billy was sitting there with a smile on his face but was several shades of red. “Yes Mommy, they were really good.”
“OK boys, go wash your face and hands and get ready for school.”
The boys scampered to their room when I heard the elevator doors open. A few seconds later Pete walked in and gasped. “Oh my god Ace, you’re alive.”
I stood up and looked at him as tears were rolling down his cheeks. He came over and quickly hugged me. “Yes Pete, I’m very much alive.”
“Thank god,” He started. “Evelyn said you were dead and I couldn’t believe it.”
“It seems rumors of my demise were greatly exaggerated.” I said as I finished my coffee.
Timmy and Billy came back into the dining room then stopped when they saw Pete. “Who…who is that?” Billy stuttered.
“Boys, this is Agent Morgan but you can call him Mr. Pete. He’ll be taking you to school today and there will be a few agents walking around so don’t be frightened.”
Pete knelt down and reached his hand out to Billy. He took it then shuffled over to him. “No one is going to hurt you Billy.”
“How did you know my name?” He asked with a surprised look on his face.
Pete smiled at him. “That’s my job and isn’t that your brother Timmy?”
“Wow, you’re smart.” Timmy said.
Pete downplayed everything. “Is everyone ready to go?”
The others quickly washed up then I went downstairs with them and watched as they loaded into the Hummer and left the grounds.
<><><><>
Downtown, Adam was heading to his office to see what his day held for him. He was angry that he had to treat Ace like a leper and was going to have a few words with David about it. He set his briefcase down then got a cup of coffee and headed towards David’s office.
He was about to go in when the door opened when he and David almost ran into each other. “What is it Graham?”
Adam didn’t care for his attitude either this morning. “I want a word with you.”
“I don’t have time Graham,” David barked as he walked past his executive assistant.
Adam stood there amazed at the way he was still being treated. “Cut the crap David.” Adam shouted as David stepped into the elevator.
He ran down the hall but the doors had closed and the elevator was heading down. Adam went back to his boss’s office then went inside. He looked around then stepped behind David’s desk and looked at his desk calendar. He saw a notation in red. ‘GJ 9am’
Adam scratched his head as he tried to figure out what it meant. He knew his boss never went in front of a grand jury because that was his responsibility. He left then returned to his office and picked up the phone. He was going to call Ace but decided it best if he saw his friend face to face.
Adam grabbed his briefcase then headed for the parking lot. His first stop was to the courthouse and he searched the parking lot and sure enough, there was David’s car. He wondered what was up but didn’t have time to see what was going on so he took off for the White House.
Twenty minutes later, Adam was pulling onto the White House grounds and parked by the West Wing. He got out then entered wondering if he’d find his friend there. He stuck his head into Ace’s office but that was empty so he knew where he was.
After a short walk, he entered the residence. There in the dining room Ace was having coffee with Judge Matthews and a woman he could only presume was his wife. Adam took a deep breath then walked in. “Umm Ace, can I talk to you?”
I stood up and glared at him. “Why, so you can accuse me of being a loose cannon again?” I fired at him.
His face changed expression as he looked at the ground. “Ace, I’m sorry I said that and I know you’re not loose cannon.”
Adam was wiping his eyes and that’s something I never saw him do. “Alright, we can talk down in my room.” I said then excused myself.
As soon as we entered, Adam blew his nose. “Ace please believe me when I say I had my orders and I hated saying that to you. I know you were just following the evidence.”
“What’s going on Adam?” I asked still very much in the dark about everything that had transpired over the last twenty four hours.
“I wish I totally knew.” Adam answered then sat down and proceeded to tell me everything he knew. “Also, this morning I went to talk to David and he was acting like someone or something had crawled up his ass sideways”
I thought about what he’d just said. “That doesn’t sound like him.”
“Tell me about it, in fact he kept referring to me by my last name like I was some schoolboy again.”
“That’s odd.” I said trying to make sense out of all this.
“If you think that’s odd, try this on.” Adam said. “On his calendar was ‘GJ 9am’
“GJ,” I asked. “Why would he be appearing before the Grand Jury?”
“You got me buddy.” Adam replied.
“Let’s go talk to Judge Matthews, maybe he knows something.” I suggested.
“Good idea,” Adam said. “But don’t be surprised if he doesn’t know or can’t say anything.”
“I understand, but it’s worth a shot.”
We returned to the dining room and this time Ben was in there. As soon as we entered, Ben smiled. “Have you two made up?”
Adam turned red at the question. “Yes Mr. President and I’m really sorry about the way I treated Agent Mason yesterday.”
“What was going on?” Ben asked.
“Sir the information I had was sketchy and I was ordered not to allow Ace to go off willy nilly on his own.” Adam answered. “Judge Matthews, may I ask you a question?”
“I’ll answer it if I can.” Cal replied.
“Do you know when someone is going to appear before a Grand Jury?”
Cal shook his head. “That we don’t counselor, we just try the cases that come before us.”
I could tell that didn’t seem to satisfy Adam but there wasn’t much we could do about it. I looked at Ben. “Don’t you have anything to do Sir?”
“I had a meeting that wasn’t all that important so I just cancelled it.” Ben replied.
I was about to speak when I heard the elevator doors open then, “Outta my way dog.” I heard the voice snap which set Tonka off. “Ace get this fucking dog…”
Ben walked around the corner and looked at our guest. “Watch your mouth in my home.”
Evelyn was in one of her moods. “I don’t have time for niceties.”
“You better mind your tongue when you’re in my home.”
“Whatever! Now where is Agent Mason?”
I was right behind Ben but she couldn’t see me and I could tell Ben was steaming. “Don’t you dare tell me whatever when I tell you something Ms. Morgan.”
“That’s Director Morgan to you.” She snapped.
“In my office now!” Ben fired.
She just stood there defying him. “I will not be ordered like a school girl.”
“I’ve taken just enough of your stunts since I’ve been here.” Ben started.
“You’ve taken enough of MY STUNTS?” She screamed. “I’ve taken all I care to with that faggot…”
“Shut it right this minute.” Ben growled.
She stepped up to Ben bumping him with her boobs causing Tonka to go off. “Get that fucking animal away from me or it is dead.” She said reaching in her purse.
“Freeze Evelyn,” I said drawing down on her.
“Put that thing away Mason.” She tried to order.
Just then the elevator doors opened and out came Johnny. “Johnny, remove her weapon.” Ben ordered.
She tried to resist but when Tonka barked, she froze so Johnny could remove her piece. He handed it over to me then I looked at her. “I believe you were asked to go into The President’s office, now I suggest you move it.”
She stood there with her arms folded. “I don’t take orders…” She started then Tonka barked. “Don’t let that bastard bite me or I’ll sue you.”
Johnny didn’t know what the hell was going on any more than I did but he knew Ben had spoken so he nudged her with the back of his hand. “Do like you were asked.” Johnny said firmly.
As soon as we passed the dining room, she saw Adam then lit into him. “What the hell are you looking at? I thought you were under orders to control that pervert.”
Adam was furious so he stormed out after us. I stood by the door and Ben nodded when he saw Adam about to enter. When he was in, I closed the door. Evelyn went to charge at Ben so I quickly had to subdue her. She tried resist. “Cuff her,” Ben said so I did as instructed.
“Let me go this instant you pervert.” She screamed. “I’m bringing charges against you.”
“Oh,” Ben said as my heart and stomach tried to trade places.
“Yeah, and I’ll be filing charges against you also.” She screamed. “Get that judge in here.”
Ben went over to the door and walked out as I was watching my life flash before my eyes. Ben was gone a good five minutes but Evelyn’s mouth never shut up. “Well Mr. Pervert, you’re off to jail and so is that kike president. I don’t know how this country could elect a fucking Jew president.”
Adam lost it and I had to do my job to protect someone in handcuffs; “Adam NO.”
“I’ll not stand by and allow anyone to talk like that about the President of the United States. You’re just pissed that Ace stumbled into the secret case you were running without telling so much as the President.”
“I don’t have to explain myself to you.” She fired.
“Listen lady, and I use that term very loosely, if you had told me the truth I could have run more interference but you didn’t.”
“Well, that Jew won’t be around when I get through with him. I’d like to know what man lets their son get raped over and over again by someone sworn to protect him, isn’t that right Agent Pervert.”
I was pissed and felt betrayed so all I could do was glare at her. I was about to speak when the door opened and in walked Ben along with Cal. Ben motioned to me so I stepped outside. He put his hands on my shoulders then gave me a solemn look. “Ace, all I can say is I’m very sorry.”
I was about to try to say something then I lost it. I slumped down onto floor and broke down. Ben stood there and let me cry then he finally reached out and took my hand. “Come on Ace.” He said as I felt like I was about to be executed.
When we walked back inside Evelyn still had a case of diarrhea of the mouth. “Get me out of these handcuffs this minute.”
Ben looked at Johnny and nodded his head. As soon as she was released, Cal took control. “Ms. Morgan, I expect you to conduct yourself properly, do we understand each other?”
“Yes Mr. Matthews.” She said sticking her foot in her mouth.
“YOU WILL ADDRESS ME AS YOUR HONOR,” Cal said strongly.
“Yes Your Honor.” She said meekly.
You want me to hear the evidence you have here outside of my courtroom, is this correct?”
“Yes, Your Honor,” Evelyn said glaring at me and then over to Ben.
I decided to pull out my digital recorder so Cal would have a record of the goings on so I turned it on and set it on Ben’s desk so everything could be recorded. Cal saw this then looked at Evelyn saying, “Now, I expect you to conduct yourself as if you were in court because I won’t hesitate to hold you in contempt or even bring these proceedings to an immediate halt. There is also a digital recording of these proceedings being made now ... do you understand this?”
Again she glared at me. “Yes Your Honor.”
“Now, I understand you wish to level some very serious charges here against Special Agent Mason and the President.”
“That’s right,” Evelyn started. “Before I level the charges I want it known that I’m beginning to believe that Agent Nate Hill was falsely convicted.”
“Whether he was or he wasn’t is not for me to determine. There is no dispute he did flee the State of California after he was released on bail and he also tried to kidnap and molest a child in Orlando.”
Evelyn couldn’t dispute that. “No Your Honor, those facts are not in dispute, he did commit those crimes.”
“So what makes you think he didn’t try to kidnap and molest Benjamin Jacobs?” Cal asked as she stood there. “I see you can’t, so let’s move on.”
“Your Honor, Agent Mason has had perverted relations with Benjamin Jacobs Jr. for lord knows how long and his father, our so called kike president, has…”
“THAT’S JUST ENOUGH!” Judge Matthews shouted. “I warned you that will maintain proper decorum in my presence during these proceedings.”
“What!? You support a pervert and his father?” Evelyn shouted.
“SILENCE!” Cal shouted. “That outburst will cost you…”
“I ain’t payin' shit.” She shouted interrupting Cal.
Cal looked over to me then nodded. I slipped behind her and quickly re-cuffed her. “Now maybe you’ll control your mouth. I also want you to remember what I said before. I hereby hold you in contempt and fine you the amount of $100.00. You’re treading on thin ice.”
“Un-hand me you bastard,” She screamed. “Just you wait, pervert; you WILL be in prison.”
“Where is your proof?” Cal asked.
“What, my word isn’t good enough?” Evelyn shouted again.
“For charges like this, I’m afraid it’s not.” Cal said matter of factly.”
“Get that brat in here. Make him tell you what Mason did to him.”
“You know we can’t compel anyone to testify if they don’t want to.” Cal said.
“You’re a judge, you can make him testify.” Evelyn shouted. “These are crimes against a child. Children must be protected.”
Just then there was a knock on the door. Ben looked at me. “Ace, tell whoever it is we’re busy.”
I nodded my head then went to the door. “Hi Ace, I’m back.”
“Is that the brat, get him in here.” Evelyn shouted at the top of her lungs.
Bennie heard it and was past me in a flash. “I’m a what?”
“You heard me.” Evelyn started then Cal stepped in.
“SILENCE! Ms. Morgan, I’m warning you.” Cal admonished.
“So you’re going to protect this kike and his brat.”
Bennie ran over to her. “You better watch what you say about my Dad. You’re lucky you’re in handcuffs or I’d put you on your ass and I wouldn’t care if you were a female or not.”
“Benjamin, that’s enough.” Ben said.
“Yes Sir.” Bennie said.
Cal took over then. “Bennie, there have been some very serious charges made here today by Ms. Morgan.”
“That’s Director Morgan.” She interrupted.
“Not for long.” Ben said.
“We’ll see who is smiling after we’re done in here.” She said causing my stomach to get queasy again.
“Bennie, come here son.” Ben said as Bennie went over to him and started whispering into his ear.
“That’s right, tell your brat to lie.” Evelyn shouted.
“Listen bitch, I don’t lie for no one. So shove it.” Bennie fired back.
“Bennie,” Cal admonished.
“I’m sorry Your Honor,” Bennie said softly. “I don’t lie for anyone.”
“Bennie, would you be willing to answer some questions for us?”
“What’s she accusing Ace of?”
“You’re loving pervert is a child molester.” Evelyn shouted again.
“Ms. Morgan, I’ve warned you for the last time. One more outburst and any charges will be dismissed.”
“FINE!” She shouted then sat down.
“That will cost you another $100.00. If I have to speak to you again, you’ll be looking at some jail time.” Cal said then looked over to Bennie. “Bennie, have you and Ace had sexual relations?”
Bennie looked at Cal then to Ben and finally over to me. “Your Honor, it’s not polite to kiss and tell.”
“See…” Evelyn started to interrupt again but stopped when Cal looked at her.
“Bennie, I take that to mean you and Ace have engaged in sexual activities?”
Bennie looked at me then came over and wrapped his arms around my neck and planted one on me in front of everyone. “I’m so sorry baby. I love you more than you’ll ever realize.”
‘I was a dead man.’ I thought as Bennie looked at Cal.
“Your Honor, anything Ace and I have ever done has been with my full consent and we’ve never broken any laws.”
“That’s bullshit,” Evelyn shouted. “He’s lying.”
Bennie ran over and got into her face. “Why don’t you just shut the fuck up bitch? You don’t know shit.”
She tried to head butt Bennie but he stepped to the side causing her to land on her face. Ben went over to his son. “Bennie control your language son, I’ll not tell you again.”
“I’m sorry Dad but she’s called everyone here everything but human beings and she’s really pissed me off.”
Adam and I went over and jerked Evelyn up. “Don’t try anything like that again or I’ll file charges against you myself.” Adam said.
“That will cost you 2 days in jail now, Ms. Morgan, don’t try that again,” Judge Matthew said.
“He’s a little liar and you’re suborning perjury.” Evelyn shouted then ran towards Cal.
I reached out and managed to grab her by the cuffs causing her to stop and let out a scream. I led her over to the sofa and sat her down. “Now stay there and don’t move.”
“You don’t talk to me like that you pervert.” She shouted.
I turned and went to the door and whistled. Tonka came running up to me and I led him inside. “Watch her boy.”
Tonka sat and kept his eyes on Evelyn as Bennie went over to his dad whispered something to him as Cal got everyone’s attention. “Bennie, please explain what you mean you haven’t broken any laws.” Cal asked.
Ben reached into his pocket and pulled something out and handed it to Cal. He opened it and carefully read it. “Is this correct Mr. President?”
I was watching the goings on and was lost. “Yes Your Honor, it is correct.”
“Ms. Morgan, do you still wish to continue with your allegations?”
She couldn’t read him. “Of course I want to continue this; we can’t have a pervert out there hurting innocent children.”
“Very well,” Cal started, please uncuff her then come over here.”
Cal handed her what Ben had handed him. She looked at it then her eyes got big. “What is the meaning of this?”
“It means you haven’t done your homework Ms. Morgan. As you can clearly see, no crimes have been committed at all.”
“It’s impossible.” She ranted.
“The seal is intact.” Cal said. “Any court would accept it as fact.”
She looked at me and snarled. “It looks like you’ve won this one Mason but you haven’t heard the last of me.”
Ben stepped up. “Oh yes we have. Ms. Morgan, you’re fired.”
Cal interrupted. “Mr. President, if I might here?”
“What do you have in mind?” Ben asked.
“Ms. Morgan, I want to know just where you received your information from and I will not buy it’s from a confidential source.” Cal asked as she just stood there saying nothing. “I’ll not ask you again.”
“Your Honor, look at what I knew. The boy had been in Mason’s room at all hours, he’s admitted he’s seen Mason nude. What was I supposed to think?”
“I’ve seen my own son naked, does that mean something unnatural is going on?”
“Why no Sir, I’d never think that about you.”
“So then why would you think that about a Secret Service Agent?”
“He’s admitted loving the boy, that’s not natural.”
“Why?” Cal asked. “There is no law against being gay.”
“So you would condone boy and an adult to see each other naked and admit to loving each other.”
“He’s reached the legal age of consent so that’s between the two of them.” Cal said informing her of the law.
“Well I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM WITH IT.”
“But you have no evidence, just your own misguided prejudices.” Cal said. “You’ve opened yourself up to all kinds of litigation if The President and his son wish to pursue. I must also say there is cause to relieve you as Director of the Secret Service since you serve at his pleasure. Now there is the little matter of the $200.00 in fines and the 2 days in jail.”
“WHAT?” She screamed. “You can’t be serious.”
“I’m very serious Ms. Morgan. I warned you more than enough but you wouldn’t control yourself. Agent Mason, can you see to it she’s delivered to the Federal Detention area?
“Yes Your Honor,” I said then looked at Ben.
Ben thanked Cal then went back to Evelyn. “As I was saying, you’re terminated and your office will be sealed and your personal property will be inventoried then you will be notified when you can pick it up. Agent Mason, get her credentials.”
I took her purse and removed her ID case and holster. “What should I do with these and who will assume the director’s position?”
Ben thought for a moment. “I know just the person. Now, call headquarters and notify them Director Morgan has been terminated with cause and she is not to be on any Secret Service property. Also, take control of the keys to her vehicle and any other property she has belonging to the service.”
“How am I supposed to get around?” She asked.
“You won’t have to worry about that for the next 2 days but you’re young and able bodied, try walking or taking a cab.” I said. “Mr. President, we need to change all the security protocols ASAP.”
“You’re right, Ace;” Ben said. Can you get hold of Agent Carl?”
“Right away Sir,” I said then called JR.
“JR, can you come up to the residence right away?”
“Sure Ace, what’s up; this sounds important.”
“I’ll explain everything when you get here.”
Ben’s office was starting to clear out when I saw Bennie standing there looking so alone. I went over to him and he fell into my arms. “Oh baby, I’m so sorry.”
He kept staying that over and over. I led him over to the sofa then sat him down onto my lap. “Baby, love means never having to say you’re sorry.”
“For this I do and you’re really going to hate me when I tell you.”
“Did you go out and kill someone I don’t know about?” I asked jokingly then he looked up at me and cried even harder. “Baby, what is it? Nothing you can say will ever stop me from loving you.”
I held him for a while then he finally calmed down. “Love, there is something I have to tell you. It’s something I should have said a long time ago but I was so much in love with you and you loved me, I just couldn’t.”
I lifted his chin up and looked him in the eyes. “Why don’t you let me be the judge of that?”
Bennie kissed me passionately then took both of my hands in his and looked me in the eyes. “Ace, I’ve omitted something from you.” He started then I went to speak but he put his fingers on my lips. “I love you Ace for who you are, just as you are. But I’m not quite who you think I am.”
“Bennie, my love, you’re the person I’m madly in love with. There isn’t a thing I don’t know about you and everything we do, it’s icing on the cake.”
Tears started to stream from his eyes again. “I think you love me because I’m so young and desirable.”
“Well, you are young and as for desirable, hell yeah you are. I’m watching everyone who walks past you when we’re out because I don’t want someone even thinking about hitting on you.”
“Baby, when you see me nude, what do you see?”
“I see one hot looking dude who has my heart totally and completely.”
Bennie stopped and I could see him deep in thought. “Ace, I’m not the young teenager you think I am.”
I was a little shocked I guess because I just looked at him. Bennie dropped his head and started crying then he tried to run off my lap but I quickly wrapped my arms around him. “No love, you’re not running away. So are you trying to say you’re older?”
He started shaking then broke down sobbing again. Ben walked in and saw Bennie crying on my lap then started over. I looked at him and shook my head. He seemed to understand what I meant without saying anything. Ben got something off his desk then left us alone. I kissed him gently on the lips, “Baby, talk to me please.”
“It is true baby, I’m of the legal age of consent and I should have told you that a long time ago.”
That news took a ton of weight off my shoulders because anything we did was beyond all doubt totally legal. “Baby, I didn’t fall in love with a number, I fell in love with you. You’re a sweet, caring, sexy guy that I want to spend the rest of life with.”
He looked me in the eyes, “Really?”
“Yes silly, really. You’re the same person you were when you got up this morning so tell me, what’s changed?”
He shoved his face into my shoulder and held me tight. I tapped him on the head then he looked at me again. “Well nothing but I didn’t tell you.”
I lifted his chin up. “Look, be honest with me. Did the subject ever come up?”
He thought then said, “Well, there were times we said we had to be careful because people wouldn’t understand about us.”
“Yeah but did I come out and ask how old you were?”
“No but I could have said baby, I’m legal so it none of their business.”
“You could have but you didn’t so I’m not the least worried about it.” I said then eased him to his feet.
We stood up then Ben came in. “Guys, it’s lunch time.”
I’d lost all track of time when we were in Ben’s office with Evelyn’s crap. Before we left the office, I made arrangements for Evelyn to be taken over to the detention center so she could serve her contempt citation. Bennie and I went and washed up then sat down and enjoyed a nice lunch of Gloria’s Mexican burgers. While we were eating, I asked Ben if he managed to get up with JR and he said he did. “Sir, I know we don’t normally discuss business over a meal but I do have something to ask.”
“I have a good idea what you’re concerned about and I know the perfect person.” Ben said.
I was chomping at the bit. “Who do you have in mind?”
“A former agent and someone I trust with my life.” Ben said then it hit me.
“Ed,” I asked.
Ben smiled. “Can you think of anyone better suited for the job?”
I thought about it. Ed was the consummate agent but I wondered how he’d managed dealing with politicians. “Sir, he knows the agency inside and out but well, how will he handle the politicians on the hill? I know they can be intimidating.”
“Ace, I’ve been with Ed a long time and I think he will be able to handle them.”
I smiled nodding my head. “Then he’d make the perfect director. When will you drop this bomb shell on him?”
“When we finish lunch,” Ben said.
Just then my cell rang. “I need an unlisted number.” I said. “Mason.”
“Agent Mason, US Attorney David Miller is here.”
I looked at Ben. “Are you expecting the US Attorney?”
Ben shook his head then Adam tapped me on the shoulder. “Maybe now, we’ll find out what he’s up to.”
“Let him in.” I said then ended the call.
Just then, I heard the elevator doors open so I got up to see who it was. “Hi Ace,” Dusty said as he and JR came into the dining room. “Oh, I hope we’re not interrupting Sir.”
“Not at all Agent Moore, have you two had lunch yet?”
Dusty and JR stood there not knowing what to say. I went over and nudged them. “You better answer.”
“Umm, no sir;” JR said.
“Well then come sit down and get a burger.” Ben said.
They sat down and dove in as Gloria came in from some fresh hot fries. “Hola Señor Dusty, Hola Señor JR.”
“Hello Gloria,” JR started then bit into his burger. “Wow I love these burgers.”
“Thank you,” She replied then returned to the kitchen.
“Agent Moore, Agent Carl, I’d like you to meet Judge Cal Matthews.”
“Nice to meet you,” Dusty said. “Are you the same Cal Matthews that helped Ace and Chris?”
“That I am, but back then I was still in private practice.”
“Well, congratulations on being appointed to the bench.”
“Thank you and I’m sure I’ll be seeing you professionally.”
Just then the house phone rang. I got up to answer it, “Residence, Agent Mason.”
“Let me up,” The voice commanded.
“Are you asking or telling?” I shot back when Ben gave me a strange look so I covered the mouth piece. “It’s David Miller.”
“I’m telling you,” He shouted so loud I had to pull the phone away from my ear.
Ben reached out so I handed him the phone. “Look Mason, I said let me up now.” David said still yelling into the phone.
“I’ll not have anyone speak like that to someone on my protection detail, do we understand each other?” Ben said firmly.
“I...I’m sorry Mr. President. I have something important to discuss with you.”
“Just remember to watch your tone.” Ben said hanging up the phone. “Go get him Ace.”
“Yes Sir,” I said then headed for the elevator.
I rode down and as soon as the doors opened I got blasted again. “It’s about time.”
I wasn’t in the mood for his crap after the morning I already had had. “Shut it David, I’m not in any mood for your mouth.”
“Is that so?” David said. “We’ll see how your mood is after I speak to the President.”
I didn’t know what he was talking about so I just let it go. When the doors opened, I headed for the dining room so I could finish my lunch. When I entered, David was right behind me. “Mr. President, could we have a few minutes please?”
One thing you didn’t do was interrupt Ben while he’s eating. “Mr. Miller, can’t you see I’m eating my lunch?”
“Umm yes Sir.” David said softly.
“Then I suggest you have a seat in the living room until I’m finished.”
“But Sir, this is VERY IMPORTANT.” David said not winning any points with Ben.
“The only thing that could interrupt my lunch is a matter of extreme national security, is that what you’re trying to tell me?”
“Well, no Sir.” David started.
“Then go sit down and leave me in peace.” Ben said now totally ticked.
I looked at JR and Dusty and it was like JR had seen a ghost. “JR what’s wrong?”
He started to shake and that caused me concern. They had finished eating so we excused ourselves then went to my bedroom. I sat in my desk chair while Dusty and JR sat on the bed. After several minutes JR finally spoke. “Ace someone it trying to get you into some deep shit.”
After the morning I just had, I could believe just about anything. “OK buddy, fill me in.”
JR filled me in on everything that transpired and I got a sense of the reason he and Dusty needed to sleep in. We talked for several more minutes when I heard a knock on the door. I got up and Ben was standing there. “Ace, can you come with me please?”
I went with Ben then Dusty looked at JR. “Babes, we have to help him.”
“I know, I have the photo I told you about but I had to tap into the bank’s security system in order to get it.”
Dusty thought for a moment. “Do you know the branch?”
“Sure,” JR replied. “It’s the one we all use.”
Dusty smiled. “I have an idea.” He said then pulled out his phone.
He called the bank and spoke with the branch manager. He agreed to help in any way he could so Dusty explained what he needed. “Do you have the date in question?” The manager asked.
“Yes Sir,” Dusty said then gave him the date.
“I have that DVD right here. You can get it any time you want.”
Dusty thought for a minute. “Sir, I’ll have a uniformed Secret Service officer pick it up, is that alright?”
“Sure, that’ll be fine. I’ll put it in an envelope for your eyes only.” The manager replied.
“Thank you very much,” Dusty said and ended the call then called Capt. Langford. “Captain, I really need a huge favor.”
“What is it Agent Moore?” Langford asked.
“I have a very important package at Bank of America and was wondering if a Uniformed Officer could go by, pick it up and bring it to me here at the residence just as soon as possible.”
“Sure, what branch?”
Dusty gave Capt. Langford the information then hung up.
“Dusty, I don’t know what’s going on but there is another agent you should talk to.” JR said with concern in his voice.”
“Who is that babes?” Dusty asked.
“Dylan Masters,” JR started. “He called me before I left and I heard a “dying declaration” from the suspect he’d shot at the Matthews place.”
“Alright babes, I’ll get hold of him. Now try not to worry.”
Ben and I were heading towards his office. “Ace, I want you to listen closely to me. Whatever happens inside, I don’t want you to say a word. Let me handle it.”
I didn’t like what I was hearing. “Sir, are you saying you’ll be acting as my attorney?”
Ben stopped then put his hands on my shoulders. “Yes Ace, that’s exactly what I’m saying.”
“I knew you were a lawyer but are you licensed here in DC?”
“No but I am licensed to appear in all Federal Courts.”
That made me feel a lot better. “Alright Sir, I trust you and I’ll bite my tongue.”
Ben wrapped his arm around my shoulder and gave it a little squeeze. “Look, I won’t let you down.”
As soon as he said that we were at his office. As soon as we went in, David was standing there with a smug look on his face. As soon as the door closed he walked over. “Agent Mason, I’m placing you under arrest.”
I wanted to deck him but kept my word to Ben. “Mr. Miller, you have no right to arrest anyone. You’re not a sworn officer of the law.”
“Are you trying to act like an attorney now? That’s a criminal offense Mr. President and to your statement, I’m an officer of the court.”
Ben wasn’t going to go into his with that just yet. “You want to play games, fine we’ll play them. Just park your butt on that sofa and I’ll be right back.”
Ben left his office and returned to the dining room. “Cal, I’m afraid I’m going to need your assistance again in my office.”
Cal finished his coffee when stood up. “What’s going on now Ben?”
“That ass David Miller is trying to arrest Ace.”
“What?” Cal said as his eyes got big. “He’s not an officer of the law.”
“That’s that I told him but he didn’t seem to want to hear it from me.”
Ben and Cal went into his office and closed the door. “Mr. President, are you still trying to maintain I can’t arrest Agent Mason?”
Cal spoke up then. “If he’s not then I am.”
David hadn’t been in a court room in a long time so he hadn’t met Cal. “And who might I ask are you?”
I didn’t like David’s tone and I could tell Cal didn’t either. “Mr. Miller, you may refer to me as Your Honor. I happen to be Judge Cal Matthews and I’m a federal court judge.”
I thought David was going to crap his pants as his face lost all color. “My apologies Your Honor, I don’t get into the court room much.”
“Very well, I’ll accept your apology but you are not an officer of the law and therefore have no powers to arrest anyone. If you want Agent Mason arrested, why didn’t you swear out a warrant and bring it before a federal judge?”
David stood there. “That’s because I went to the grand jury and I have in my hand a sealed indictment.”
“Objection,” Ben said.
David once again shoved his foot into it. “I told you Mr. President, attempting to act as an attorney is a criminal offence.”
“Mr. Miller, you know absolutely nothing about me. For your information I am a lawyer.”
“Oh?” David snarled. “Are you licensed to practice here in the District?”
“No but I am in California and in all Federal Courts.”
Cal looked at David and David was tugging at his shirt collar. “Fine, represent Mason.”
“Watch your tone,” Cal said firmly.
“We’re not in a courtroom,” David fired back.
Cal was steamed. You want this in a courtroom and on the record?”
“Yes Your Honor.” David fired back.
I looked at the clock and it was 1:30. “Fine then, we’ll meet in my courtroom no later than 2:30 and Mr. Miller, don’t be late.”
I went over to Ben. “Sir, I have to make arrangements for Bennie.”
“Where is Pete?” Ben asked.
“He’s at the elementary school with Timmy and Billy.”
We left the office then heard. “Uncle Ace.”
Perfect timing as I saw Pete following the boys along with Judy so I went up to him. “Can you stay here with Bennie? The President, several other agents and I have to go out and I don’t want Bennie there.”
“What’s going on Ace?”
“To be honest buddy, I don’t know. I don’t mean to give you a short answer but that’s all I can say.”
“You better tell Bennie that yourself.” Pete said.
I nodded my head then headed to Bennie’s room. When I went inside he put his laptop down and ran into my arms. “Are you alright now, baby?”
I kissed him on the cheek. “Yeah, I’m fine love. Look, I have to go out for a while and so does your dad. Now before you ask, you can’t come.”
“But why, I’m no kid.” Bennie whined.
“I know that love but we think it’s best if you stay here. Besides, you have guests or did you forget that?”
Bennie looked down then back at me. “Yeah I did but they would understand.”
“I’m sure they would but can you be a good host for me?”
Bennie smiled. “Sure Ace, I’ll keep them company, I’m almost done studying for tomorrow’s final.”
I gave him a kiss then went over to my room and put my vest on. I called Dusty and he got the limo ready then Ben and I went over to the West Wing.
When we arrived, I saw Dusty, JR and an agent from the assault team inside our office. Before I went in, Johnny and Marshall Ellis joined us. “We have to head over to the Federal Courthouse. The limo is coming.”
Johnny and Marshall stayed with Ben and Adam while I went into the office. JR saw me right away. “Ace, this is Dylan Masters. He was at Cal Matthew’s place last night.”
“Does this have anything to do with what happened when you returned to the residence?” I asked.
“Yes Agent Mason, it does.” Masters said.
“Alright, you’re with us then.” I said. “Dusty, JR you are too.”
We came out of the office and Johnny was outside opening the back door to the beast. He gave us a wave then we all headed out and got in. Dusty went over then asked Johnny to drive so he could sit in the back with us and talk.
One the way over, Dylan told us about what had happened at the residence. “Why did you need to talk to Agent Minor in private?” I asked.
“Well Ace, the suspect made some very strong accusations about you.” Dylan said.
“And you believed him?” I asked.
“At the time, he had two gunshot wounds and it appeared he wasn’t going to make it so it was taken as a dying declaration.”
“Agent Masters, did the suspect in fact die?” Ben asked.
“Mr. President, I don’t know. The paramedic that arrived on scene said his wounds didn’t seem to be life threatening.”
“Do you have the suspect’s name?” Ben asked.
“Yes Sir,” Dylan said as he took his notebook out of his pocket. “His name is Gale Granger.”
That name hit me like a ton of bricks. “Granger, is he any relation to James Granger, the former ADA from DC?” I asked.
“I don’t know about that.” Masters answered.
“Well, you need to call the hospitals and see if he is alive or dead.” Ben said to Masters.
Masters pulled his phone out and started making calls. He struck out on his first call and was about to make another when we pulled into the underground parking lot. Johnny stopped when a US Marshall approached the vehicle. “Is that the President?” The Marshall asked.
“It is and we have a full security team too.”
“I’ll get a secure elevator ready. Do you know what floor you’ll be on?”
Johnny lowered the window. “Ace what floor is the courtroom on?”
“Second floor,” I replied.
Johnny pulled up and I saw an open elevator door. The driver side door opened and I saw a US Marshall. He held the door as we got Ben out and into the elevator. The Marshall went to stop Cal until Ellis looked at him. “The judge is with us.”
Cal got onto the elevator then we rode up to the second floor. Cal stepped off first, “If you all will follow me.”
We followed Cal past several doors then he let us into his courtroom. When we went in, the room was empty. Dylan made another phone call and was talking for several minutes. He looked up at me and nodded his head. So I took that to mean he found the right hospital. When he ended his call he came over to us. “He’s still alive and is expected to recover.”
The last thing I wanted was anything to happen to him so I called the Marshalls Service and asked them to send a couple of men over to stand guard outside his door with orders that he have no visitors other then authorized staff.
I looked at the clock and it was almost 2:30 and David hadn’t arrived yet. I didn’t want to be in his shoes if he showed up late but then I couldn’t worry about it. “All rise, this court is now in session; the Honorable Judge Calvin Matthews presiding.”
Cal walked in the quickly took his seat. “Be seated,” He said as he looked around courtroom. “Has anyone seen Mr. Miller?”
Ben stood up. “No Your Honor not since we left the residence.”
Cal was steamed. He looked over to his bailiff. “Gene, please call the Grand Jury office. Let them know I would like a copy of the Grand Jury testimony regarding Agent Mason presented by David Miller.”
“Yes Your Honor,” The bailiff said then made the call.
At 2:35 I heard the big door to the courtroom open so I looked over my shoulder and there was David walking in on his cell phone like he didn’t have a care in the world. “Mr. Miller, I believe I said I wanted you here at 2:30 not 2:35.”
David put his phone in his pocket then looked at Cal. “My apologies Your Honor but I was unavoidably detained.”
“That might work in another courtroom but it doesn’t here not since YOU requested we do this in court.”
David bowed his head. “Yes Your Honor.”
“Now, you want Agent Mason taken into custody.”
“That’s correct Your Honor,” David said.
“Let me see the indictment.” Cal asked reaching his hand out.
“But Your Honor,” David started.
“Don’t but Your Honor me,” Cal started. “If you have sufficient evidence to get an indictment, then I want to see the indictment. Do I make myself clear?”
David opened his briefcase then removed an envelope and approached the bench. “Here is the form from the Grand Jury.”
Cal removed the papers and looked them over. I was sitting beside Ben wondering what he was reading. “Mr. Miller, these are some very serious charges.”
“Yes they are Your Honor, that’s why it’s imperative we get this menace off the streets now.”
Ben stood, “Objection as to his characterization of my client.”
“Sustained,” Cal said. “Watch your mouth Mr. Miller. I expect proper courtroom decorum.”
“Yes Your Honor,” David said.
Ben looked at Cal. “May I see the indictment?” Ben asked then Cal reached out as Ben approached the bench. “Your Honor?”
“Yes Sir?” Cal replied.
“We’re requesting to see the evidence that was presented before the Grand Jury.”
“Objection,” David shouted as he stood. “We’re not required to show the defense anything.”
“Normally, I would agree but since you did this in secret, the defense has that right and I too would like to see if you have enough evidence to proceed to trial.”
“But Your Honor, if it was good enough for a grand jury.”
< BANG, BANG, BANG >
David banged his gavel. “I could indict a corpse so don’t tell me if it’s good enough for a grand jury then it has to be good enough to take to trial.”
David was backed into a corner and he couldn’t wiggle out of it. “Yes Your Honor.”
“Let’s look at this first charge, conspiracy to commit kidnapping.” David stated. “How did you come by this information?”
“I had a death bed confession.” David answered confidently.”
“Who was his alleged confession from?” Cal asked.
David was stuck. “Umm…”
“Come on Mr. Miller, you’re the US Attorney and you can’t remember the name of someone you took a death bed confession from?”
“Gale Granger,” David quickly answered.
“And you were present when he gave this death bed declaration?”
“Yes Your Honor,” David said smiling as he looked over at me.
Dylan Masters started tapping me on the shoulder. I turned around and leaned close. “Ace, he’s lying through his teeth.”
My jaw almost hit the rail. “Who was there?”
“My partner, Francine Clark and me,” Dylan started. “That’s why I called Agent Carl.”
Ben overheard Dylan and me talking. Ben was looking at us then Cal spotted it. “Would you care to let us in on what is going on counselor?”
Ben’s head snapped around. “My apologies Your Honor, may I ask one question here?”
“Yes you may.” Cal replied.
“Mr. Miller, do you fully understand the penalties for perjury?”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean? Of course I know the penalties for perjury.”
“Watch your language or I’ll hold you in contempt.” Cal interrupted.
“Yes Your Honor.” David said contritely.
Ben inquired a little more. “So you were present when Mr. Granger gave his statement, is this true?”
“It is,” David fired.
“Where was this statement taken?”
“Where Mr. Granger had been wounded.” David said trying to bluff his way out.
“I see,” Ben replied. “Was anyone else there with you while he was giving this statement?”
“No, I was alone.” David said.
Poor Dylan’s head was shaking so bad I was afraid he was going to hurt himself.
“You mean to say you were alone with a wounded suspect?” Ben asked.
“I’m a US Attorney.” David spat back.
“Ben was getting steamed and I felt I almost had to hop the rail to sit on Dylan to keep him from jumping up. “It is procedure for law enforcement to remain on scene until EMS arrives when dealing with a wounded suspect.”
“What can I say; I was alone with the suspect.” David fired.
Dylan lost it at that point. “Your Honor, he’s lying through his teeth.”
David’s head snapped over as we heard Cal’s gavel.
< BANG, BANG, BANG >
“Order,” Cal shouted. “Now, just whom might you be?”
“My apologies for interrupting Your Honor, but I’ve sat here quietly while that person over there has done nothing but lie. My name is Special Agent Dylan Masters and I was the person who shot the suspect Gale Granger. I’m also the one who took his statement which I might add is nothing but self serving here say.”
“Please continue Agent Masters.” Cal instructed so Dylan stood up and went through the rail.
He went over to the bailiff and was sworn in then he took his seat in the witness box. Ben stepped forward. “May I enquire, Your Honor?”
“Objection,” David fired.
“On what grounds,” Cal asked.
“Hearsay and relevance,” David replied.
“Over ruled,” Cal said. “I’ll decide what is and isn’t relevant and as for his statement being hearsay, he is stating under oath that he was present with the suspect so that is not hearsay. Now sit down and remain quiet, Mr. President, you may enquire.”
“Agent Masters, you say the suspect’s statement is nothing more than hearsay, how can you substantiate this?”
Dylan looked right at David, “Because the suspect, Gale Granger is still very much alive.”
“What, how can that be, I was assured he would die.” David shouted as everyone was looking at him.
Ben looked over and started to speak but Cal beat him to it. “And just who assured you the suspect would die?”
“I’m sorry but that information is confidential.” David fired.
“Confidential my ass,” Dylan shouted.
“Agent Masters, control your language.” Cal admonished.
“I’m sorry Your Honor but there is only one person who could have told Mr. Miller what happened at your residence.”
I was curious now. “And who might that be?” Ben asked.
“Special Agent Harry Minor.” Dylan replied.
“I’ll have his ass,” Dusty leaned forward saying.
Cal looked at David. “Is this true Mr. Miller?
David stood there and said nothing. “I instruct you to answer me.” Cal ordered.
“I respectfully refuse to answer on the ground it might tend to incriminate me.”
“That is your right,” David started. “And this is mine, I’m quashing your indictment against Agent Mason and I’ll be sending a copy of these proceedings to the District and Federal Bar Associations so they my begin disbarment proceedings.”
Ben walked over to him. “Mr. Miller, you committed perjury when you went before the grand jury and you continued it when you swore you were telling the truth. I cannot tolerate an attorney breaking the law to frame a respected federal agent. I hereby remove you as the US Attorney.”
Cal then surprised me. “Bailiff, take Mr. Miller into custody. I’m issuing a bench warrant for Mr. Miller’s arrest on the charge of perjury.
David tried to resist but he was soon surrounded by several of the agents in the courtroom. After he was cuffed, he was led to a holding cell. “Agent Mason, the indictment against you is quashed and you are free to return to your duties. This court is now adjourned.”
Cal banged his gavel then we all stood as he left the bench. Dusty patted me on the shoulder then shook my hand. “Ace, who is watching Granger?”
“I have several US Marshalls stationed outside his door, why?”
“Good, because right now I don’t know who we can trust and who we can’t.” Dusty said as he took out his phone. “Ace, who should we get to find Agent Minor?”
I had to think for a moment. “Most of the agents we can trust are here but I think Pete is up to the task. Ask him to secure the residence so no one can get in or out and have Tonka stay with Bennie.”
Dusty made the call when we left the courtroom to head to the parking garage. We made the trek to the parking garage and when we stepped out of the elevator, I heard the shrieks and screams of what had to be a female. “My God Marshall, who do you have in the back of that van?”
“Your former boss,” He said giggling.
I had to get Ben back to the residence so when the limo was in place, he was led into the back seat followed by everyone else. We took off and Johnny got us back home as fast as he could. When Ben and everyone was safely inside the residence, I saw Pete in the lobby so I walked over to him. “Where is Minor?”
“I haven’t a clue, I can’t find him and he’s not answering his phone either.”
“Alright Pete, get back to the residence and get everyone into one central place while Dusty and I start to search for him.”
“Do you think he’s dangerous and will hurt anyone?”
“I don’t know Pete but I’m not willing to find out either.” I said heading into our office. “JR can you check the sign out logs and see if Agent Minor has left the grounds?”
“Sure thing Ace and I can do you one better.”
“What’s that?”
“If his phone is on, I can get its location.”
“Do it,” I said then started thinking the worst. I had Dusty come with me to the residence. As soon as we started down the hall from the West Wing to the residence I heard a phone start to ring and right away I knew it was JR calling Minor. I quickly put my phone on vibrate in case he called me. A minute later, I felt my phone buzz and there was a text message. ‘He’s outside the residence.’
Since the residence was secure, I knew he couldn’t get in. Dusty and I came out and saw him trying to get in. “Minor what business do you have in the residence?” Dusty asked.
“Ah I need to speak with the President.” He quipped trying to cover his ass.
“About what,” Dusty asked.
“It’s personal,” Minor fired back as I stepped out so he could see me.
“Oh,” I said. “What personal matter might you have with him that brings you to the residence unannounced?”
“That’s none of your business Mason and I don’t have to explain myself to you.”
I walked up to him. “You don’t?” I fired back. “I’m still the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Security Detail.”
“Not for long,” He quipped.
“Oh, and why is that?” A voice said as I looked over my shoulder to see who was speaking.
“That’s none of your business,” Minor shot back. “I won’t explain myself to a retired agent, even if you were in charge.”
Ed walked over to him and snatched his credentials off his neck. “You don’t,” Ed shouted.
“No, I only have to explain myself to the director and the President.”
Ed pulled his badge case out of his pocket and opened them. “I believe you can read.”
I thought Minor was going to faint. “You’re the director!?”
“That’s right now you better start talking and fast.”
“I ain’t saying shit to you as long as that piece of shit is around.”
“You best watch your mouth,” I said getting into his face.”
“Calm down Ace,” Ed said.
“Yes Sir,” I said and backed up.
Ed held his hand out. “I’ll take your weapon.”
“WHAT?” He screamed. “I have to surrender my weapon and credentials and he is still walking free?”
Ed looked at him. “Don’t make me ask you again.” Ed said as he started to reach for his gun. “Don’t make any fast moves either.”
Dusty had him in his sights so Minor eased it out of the holster and handed it over to Ed. “Mason, you won’t be around here for much longer.”
“Oh,” Ed started. “And just what is that supposed to mean?”
All of a sudden he started laughing. “Oh man you’re stupid Mason. You don’t think I know all about you and what you’ve done?”
I decided to shut him up. “You mean with that so called dying declaration?”
He face lost all expression after I’d said that. “How do you know about that? Did that shit Masters say something?”
I smiled at him. “Let’s just say I’ve heard the declaration.”
He smiled. “Then you know your ass is mine.”
“Obviously you don’t know that the suspect is still very much alive so that makes his statement hearsay and inadmissible as fact.”
“What, that’s impossible.” He started. “Masters assured me his injuries were life threatening.”
“Well, had you listened to everything you would have heard what the paramedic said.”
“That bastard,” Minor screamed. “But you’re not going to be free for long.”
“Oh and why is that?” I asked.
“Because you’re going to prison,” Minor fired back.
“Oh I don’t think so.” I started. “That little ‘declaration’ as you call it isn’t worth crap and neither was the indictment.”
Ed took over. “Agent, you violated protocol and that cannot be tolerated. You are to be in my office tomorrow morning at 11am. I will not have someone working in this position who takes the law into their own hands.”
“You’re terminating me?” Minor screamed.
“That’s right and I have more than enough grounds to do so.”
“Fine,” He said removing his tactical holster and throwing it to the ground. “You can have that faggot and all the others here, I’ll find a better job.”
Ed shook his head. “I don’t think so, I’ll be seeing to it your police credentials are revoked.”
“What will I do?” He shouted.
I shook my head. “That’s not my problem. You have a lot to learn about being a cop and one of them is you can’t allow your personal prejudices cloud your judgment.”
“Oh yeah,” Minor started. “Fags are an abomination and against nature. Everyone of you should be gassed. Hitler’s plan wasn’t so far off in my eyes.”
I don’t know what snapped in me but I drew back and went to deck him when I felt Dusty’s arm grab mine and pull me back. “No Ace, he’s not worth it.”
“Remove his badge and ID.” I said. “He’s not fit to carry it then get him out of those clothes and escort him off the property.”
“That’s fucked up man, what about my money?” Minor shouted.
“If you have direct deposit it’ll be in there on the next payday otherwise it’ll be mailed to you.”
“What about my vacation days and comp time?”
“That’ll be in there too now let’s go.” Dusty said as he led Minor back downstairs.
I had to get my ID card out so I could swipe it to enter the residence. Once the door opened, I unlocked it and the door leading to the east wing. “Man this has been a crappy day.” I said to Ed.
“I never thought I’d get this position like this.” Ed said.
“You want to be the Director?”
“Not at all. But when the President called me personally, it was hard to say no to him and this way I can be here with my friends.”
“Come on in, I think there is someone who will be real happy to see you.”
We went into the residence and Bennie was in the living room with our guests. “Ed, you’re back.” Bennie said.
“It seems so man.”
“I knew you just couldn’t stay away.”
Ed started to laugh. “I was enjoying my retirement but when your dad called, I couldn’t say no.”
“So you didn’t miss me.” Bennie said with a mock frown on his face.
“I didn’t say that but I was enjoying a quiet life away from all this.”
“So what are you doing then?”
“I’ve accepted the position as director.”
“Man that’s great,” Bennie started. “You should have heard everything that bitch said about dad and Ace.”
I looked at Bennie. “Watch your language Benjamin.” I said sternly.
He came up to me. “Sorry Ace but you heard what she’d said.”
“Yes I did babe but you have little ears here and they’ll start to copy your language.”
He looked over his shoulder and when he saw Billy and Timmy looking at him he turned red. “Umm yeah love, you’re right. I’m sorry.”
After dinner Dusty, Ed, JR and I met with Ben and Cal. It was decided that since everyone that was behind the attempted kidnapping of the boys were now in custody, we all decided that it was safe for them to return home.
Cal wanted to get his kids home so their lives could return to normal so we made arrangements to get them there. When I returned to the residence, Dusty and JR were standing there. “Ace, come with us please.”
“What’s up guys? I asked as we went into our office.
JR sat down behind his computer. “I want you to watch this.”
I sat down beside him a something came up on his monitor. I started watching then I saw someone come in and then head to the teller. “What is this JR?” I asked unsure of what I was watching.
“Just keep watching buddy.” He answered.
I wasn’t sure what it was then I saw his face clearly. “I’ll be damn.” I said. “What the hell was he doing?”
JR stopped the DVD and then he pulled up someone’s bank records; I looked at them then got angry. “JR what are you doing looking at my personal bank accounts?”
“I’m going where the evidence take me.” He replied.
“Evidence,” I almost screamed. “What evidence.”
“Take it easy Ace,” Dusty said sitting down.
“Take it easy?” I said. “You’re going through my bank records like I’ve committed some crime.”
“You’re partly right Ace, a crime has been committed but not by you.” Dusty said patting me on the shoulder.
I calmed down and looked at the records. “Holy shit, I don’t have that much money.”
“We know,” JR said.
“So how the hell did it get there and where did it come from?” I asked.
Dusty put his hand on my shoulder. “We just found the money that was taken from the Discretionary Fund.”
“Wait a minute, the person who stole that money is dead. How the hell did it end up in my bank account?”
JR turned the DVD back on. “Watch Ace,” He said.
I did for several minutes then JR put the video on pause. “Who the hell is that?” I asked. “His face looks familiar.”
“He should Ace, that’s Gale Granger.” Dusty answered.
I was confused now. “How does he play into all this?”
“It seems the money from the Discretionary Fund was given to Granger then he deposited the cash into your account.”
“Hold it,” I started. “That should have raised all kinds of red flags at the bank.”
“Somehow it didn’t,” Dusty answered.
“But I didn’t make those deposits,” I countered.
“We know that,” JR said. “You were with Bennie at school.”
“I want Granger’s head on a stick.” I almost yelled.
“Calm down Ace,” Dusty said as I felt his hand on my shoulder.
“Calm down!? You’re not the one with over $250,000.00 of Secret Service money in their account.” I said. “It’s a wonder Federal Banking Regulators haven’t been coming out of the woodwork.”
Dusty stood up and looked at me. “We were able to stop it.”
“WHAT, how long have you known about this?”
“A little over 24 hours,” JR said.
“And you’re just now getting around to telling me this?” I said starting to fume again.
“Ace, if you remember, you’ve had your hands full too.” Dusty started.
“I know but didn’t you think this was something I should know about?”
“I know you should have Ace but be honest, when was there time to sit down and talk to you?”
“Alright,” I relented. “You’re right, this day has been a day from hell and I’m glad it’s almost over. Now who is going to handle this case?”
Dusty looked at me as JR took the DVD out of the computer. “I’m going to let Justice handle this. They’re already taking the lead on the Wanita Jenkins case as well as her co-conspirator James Granger.”
“Good, I want my plate empty when I go on vacation.” I said trying to relax. “Now, what about all that money in my bank account?”
“Don’t worry, it will be put back where it belongs.” Dusty said.
“I still don’t understand how come red flags didn’t go off when all that money was put in there.”
“Ace, relax,” Dusty said. “Justice is handling this so just relax, you’re not in trouble.”
