Chapter 36
I found Ed then we got our things together so we could head to the airport. Ed and the other agents got our gear into the limo then we walked to the front door with the Governor. He shook Ben’s hand and rubbed his shoulder. “Mr. President, I can’t thank you enough for coming here and helping us. Your agents are true professionals and I’d gladly have any of them on my team.”
We all shook his hand then got into the limo. It took about 20 minutes to make the trip to the airport. After we boarded Air Force One, we took off for the trip home.
When we were in the air, Bennie was on his laptop. I was on mine too checking my email when I heard Bennie gasp then break into tears. “Ace, look at this.”
I set my computer on the table then slid over beside my now crying lover. “What are you reading baby?”
He turned the screen so I could read it. “Teen bullied at school, leaves suicide note then hangs himself.”
I too gasped when I read the headline then wrapped my arms around him as we both cried. “Ace, I want to talk to my dad.”
I found the article on my laptop then kissed him. “Alright love, do you want me to go with you?”
He shook his head as he got up. “I want to talk with him by myself.” Bennie said as I put my computer on my lap then went about reading the article.
Bennie headed for Ben’s office then was stopped by Isaac. “Where are you going young man?”
“I’m going to talk with my Dad.”
“Your Dad…” Isaac started then stopped as he saw Ed step up.
“Is there a problem Bennie?” Ed asked.
He started to answer. “No, there’s no problem Agent Miller.” Isaac interrupted.
Bennie was doing a slow boil. “Then why did you stop me when I was about to go into Dad’s office?”
Ed looked at Isaac then waited for an answer. “I…I…I was just curious.”
“Curious? Bennie almost shouted. “You were butting your nose…”
Ed put his hand on Bennie’s shoulder. “Isaac, Bennie has carte blanche here unless the President is busy. Do we understand each other?”
“Yes Agent Miller.” Isaac said softly then left.
Bennie knocked on the door then stuck his head inside. “Are you busy Dad?”
Ben motioned for him to come in. “What’s on your mind son?”
Before Bennie stepped inside he suddenly remembered he’d forgotten his laptop. He got it then returned to Ben’s office. He pushed a chair over then sat his laptop down on the desk. As soon as he put it down, he sat on Ben’s lap and broke down crying. “Oh D…Dad, another boy k…ki…killed himself.”
Ben held onto his son and comforted him as he read the article. “This tears it. I’m going to address the nation about this problem.”
“Daddy, I wanna help too.” Bennie said in a soft child-like voice.
“What are you thinking son?”
Bennie sat there for several minutes trying to regain his composure as he thought of an answer. “I don’t know right now but there has to be a way to reach out and help these kids. I’m so lucky I have you and Ace I can talk to about anything but there are kids out there that don’t.”
“There are suicide prevention help lines out there.” Ben said as Bennie got up and sat in the chair.
“But those are staffed by adults Dad.” Bennie said looking him in the eyes. “How about one that’s staffed by teens?”
“That sounds all well and good son but when you’re dealing with a suicidal individual, you’ll need someone who specializes in handling a situation like this.”
Bennie was undaunted by what his Dad said. “OK, we can have shrinks on staff too.”
“Well son, if you can come up with a plan, I’ll give it all due consideration.”
Bennie looked at his dad to see if he was serious or just blowing smoke up his ass. When he saw him smile, he had his answer. “Alright Dad, I know several people right now I’m sure will love to help.”
“I’m sure you do son and I have an idea who you’re talking about. What I’ll need for you to do is write everything down for me.”
Bennie stood up then leaned down and hugged his father. “Thanks Dad, I’ll get it done.”
Bennie came back out and set his computer on the table. I noticed this so I set mine on the table too. Just as I did, I had a lap full of my baby. He had curled himself into a ball and softly started crying. I caressed his hair then began to rub his back as I tried to help him get his emotions under control. “What’s wrong love?”
“The boy,” He said softly in a child like voice.
I’d read the article so I knew what he was referring to. “I know love, it’s so sad when someone commits suicide.”
He sat up and glared at me. “SAD,” He shouted. “It’s ridicules Ace. There has to be a better way to help kids like this. If we can prevent one kid from taking their life it’s worth it.”
I kissed him gently on the cheek. “I agree totally baby and I found something here you might be interested in.”
He wiped his eyes. “Really love, show me.”
I went to reach for my laptop so Bennie slid off my lap so I could reach it. I opened the tab and showed him the website. “Read this baby.”
He started reading the page. “Wow, this is super.” He started then his face sunk. “Damn it, it’s all run by adults. Kids will never totally open up.”
“Love, they’re going to have to start to trust.” I started then I was interrupted.
“Trust?” Bennie yelled again startling Tonka. “They’re desperate, they’ve tried getting help from adults and all they’ve hit were brick walls.”
“So what do you purpose they do?”
“First off, they need kids their own age they can talk to.” Bennie started.
I was about to speak when we were joined by Dusty and JR. “What’s all the shouting?” JR asked.
Bennie turned red. “I’m sorry guys. I read an article online and it got to me.”
Bennie handed his laptop to JR and he started reading the article. After several minutes, he had to wipe his eyes. Dusty was sitting beside him reading the news report too and I noticed he was holding JR in his arms. “Why do kids have to resort to this?”
Bennie looked at them. “I guess they feel they have no other alternative.”
JR stopped and blew his nose. “Don’t they realize that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary situation?”
“In their mind, that situation IS permanent.” Bennie said strongly.
JR thought for a moment. “Yeah, I guess you’re right Bennie. So what do you purpose?”
“Ace found this website called We Care.” Bennie said handing them my laptop. “It’s a 24 hour suicide prevention hotline but what I don’t like about it is it’s run by adults only.”
Dusty stepped in. “Bennie, they’re best equipped to help teens. Most are psychologists and know what they’re doing.”
Bennie started getting upset again. “When they’re to this point in their lives, they’ve already tried getting adults to help them and they’ve received nothing so what makes you think these people can help them now?”
JR was nodding his head. “Love, Bennie has a point.”
“Alright Bennie, what do you purpose?” Dusty asked conceding.
“We need a place where they can talk to teens.” Bennie said.
JR put his hand on Bennie’s shoulder. “In theory Bennie it’s a good idea but there has to be an adult there who can help them too.”
Bennie’s face sunk. “What do we do guys? I’m tired of reading about kids who kill themselves because they’re being bullied.”
I picked up my laptop and looked closely at the site. I did some quick research and was surprised at what I found. “Bennie, I think I might be able to help here.”
Bennie’s eyes lit up. “How baby?”
I showed him the website. “Look at this.”
Bennie looked at the site then panned down to the bottom. “What’s The Advocate?”
“It’s a gay newspaper in DC.”
“So how’s it going to help teens?” Bennie asked starting to get upset again.
I wrapped my arm around his shoulder. “Relax sweetie. It just so happens I know who owns the newspaper.”
His eyes lit up. “Oh really? Do you think he’d be open to adding teens as counselors?”
I thought for a minute. “I don’t know but I know him and his partner.”
“YOU KNOW HIM?” Bennie shouted in excitement.
I kissed his nose. “Yes I do love. I rescued his son a while back.”
“Wow, this is perfect.” Bennie said. “Can you call him?”
I pulled out my phone and made the call. “The Advocate.”
“This is Special Agent Rich Mason with the US Secret Service, is Russell Mathews available?”
“I remember you,” The voice said. “This is his son Chase and you saved my life.”
“Well hi there Chase, how are you doing?” I asked as I watched Bennie getting animated.
“I’m doing fine. I even have a boyfriend now.” He said.
“There is someone here who’d like to say hi before you…” I started saying then I heard another voice come on.
“This is Russell Mathews.”
“Dad it’s Special Agent Mason.” Chase said.
“Well hello Agent Mason, to what do I owe this call?”
“Well sir, there is someone here who’d like to talk with you about We Care.”
“Hello Mr. Mathews, this is Bennie Jacobs.”
Chase got excited. “Bennie, Jacobs, the President’s son?”
“Hi Chase and yes, he’s my Dad.” Bennie said.
“Oh wow, I can’t believe I’m actually talking with you.”
“What can I do for you Bennie?” Russell asked.
“Well sir, I just read about another teen committing suicide.” Bennie started then we heard Chase gasp.
“Daddy we gotta help kids like that.” Chase said as he broke into tears.
“Chase, this is what I want to talk with your dad about.” Bennie said as he wiped his eyes.
“Alright Bennie, what’s on your mind?” Russell asked.
“Well sir, I would like to help try and prevent kids from ending their life if they’re getting bullied because they’re gay or whatever reason.”
“Son, we have professionals on staff to talk with them.” Russell said.
“Sir, with all due respect, when kids are seriously thinking about doing that, they’ve lost all trust in adults because they’ve been let down.”
Russell was listening intently. “Go on son, you have my attention.”
“Well sir, I’d be willing to listen to them for however long it took. I also have someone who’d step in and arrest the people behind it if I could get them to open up in that respect.”
“Do you really think they’d give you that personal information?”
“I don’t know sir but it would be worth a try. If I can stop one kid from killing themselves it would be worth it.”
“Who do you have who’d help you?” Russell asked.
“I would,” I replied. “If they’d be willing to give us that information, I’d do everything in my power to bring those behind it to justice.”
“You mean you’d trace their phone calls?” Russell asked. “Agent Mason, I would want those people brought to justice but I couldn’t allow you or anyone else, for that matter to breach their confidence.”
“No sir, I’d never do that.” I started. “I would only step in as an officer of the law if they gave me that information.”
“Well, that’s alright,” Russell said. “That would show them there are adults out there willing to help them.”
“That’s right Mr. Mathews,” Bennie said. “Once they knew we’re more than just talk it will give We Care a boost. I know some of my friends would love to help too.”
“I’ll have to think about this son.” Russell said.
“Dad, you gotta say yes.” Chase said.
“I have others to talk to son but you have my support Bennie.”
“Thank you Mr. Mathews,” Bennie said with a huge smile on his face.
After I ended the call, I heard a voice come on over the speakers. “Good afternoon, this is Col. Nelson speaking. You need to secure all of your electronic devices and get ready for landing.”
We made a smooth landing at Andrews and as we taxied to the hangar, I saw Marine one waiting on us.”
Once the plane came to a stop and the door was opened, our belongings were moved to Marine One. Once that was done we deplaned then boarded the helo for the short ride to the White House. As soon as we touched down, I got Tonka out so he could find a tree then the three of us went inside. As soon as we stepped inside, Pete was standing there. Before I could speak Ed did. “What are you doing here?”
“I was going stir crazy at home so I got Evelyn to bring me in.”
“You know you’re not released to come back yet.” I said.
He reached into his jacket and took out a piece of paper. “Actually I am Ace. He’s removed the stitches and even though I have to use the sling, it doesn’t hurt to bad if I’m careful.”
Ed took the letter then handed it to me and sure enough, he’d been released. “Can you shoot yet?”
He nodded his head. “Yeah, I can shoot left handed.”
“Have you qualified that way?” I asked.
Again he nodded. “I did that this morning. I surprised myself, I did better than I did last time.”
“Welcome back,” I said as we headed for our office. “Now that it’s official we have a job for you. Bennie, can you help Johnny get our things up to our rooms? Ed and I have some business here to take care of.”
Bennie, Johnny and Tonka headed to the residence while Ed, Pete and I went to our office. As soon as we walked in, Pete handed Ed a file. “Here is the background check on Chris. Metro’s check came back clean except for two traffic tickets. I even called a friend of mine with the FBI and they had nothing.”
“Thanks Pete,” Ed said as Pete handed me an envelope.
“What’s this?”
“I don’t know Ace, the US Attorney himself hand delivered it to us. He said you’d know about it.”
I took the envelope and opened it. I started looking at the papers and broke out into a huge grin. Ed saw this. “What are those Ace?”
“The final pieces to the puzzle.” I said speaking in a riddle.
“Huh?” Pete said.
“These are the papers that put all the pieces to the puzzle involving Harold Peterson together.”
Pete was smiling. “So now you can prove beyond all doubt he tried to assonate President Jacobs?”
“Yep,” I answered smiling. “This is the paper trail we needed that shows where the money came from and to who it went.”
“Are you going for the death penalty?” Ed asked.
“If he’s still alive when that case comes to trial.” I said. “The AG is going for the death penalty in the murder of Officer Curt Poole.”
“But it takes a number of years before the execution takes place, doesn’t it?” Pete asked.
“Yeah because death penalty cases are automatically appealed.”
“So will you even bring him to trial since he’ll already be facing death?” Pete asked.
“Why not?” Ed said. “If he should get that sentence commuted to life, he’ll be facing it again with the terrorism charges.”
Pete looked at me. “Why didn’t you just shoot him and be done with it?”
“You’re not the only one who has asked that question but you already know the answer buddy. If he had gotten to his gun before Tonka got him I wouldn’t have thought twice about it but that wasn’t the case.”
“Yeah, you’re right. I’d love to be there when you show him that evidence.”
I smiled at him. “I think that can be arranged.”
I had to get upstairs and unpack and get a shower. I was about to leave when Pete asked me another question. “Did Chris get settled in at his new place alright?”
“Yes he did.” I said.
He looked down. “I’m really sorry about the way I treated him. I hope he knows that.”
“You apologized to him and he accepted it.” I said.
“Can you tell me why we did the background check on him?”
I shook my head. “That’s on a need to know basis Pete.”
“Alright Ace.” Pete said not taking it any further. “I guess if I need to know, I’ll be told later on.”
I turned to head to the residence when I saw Dusty and JR walking towards me. “What’s up guys?”
“We need to check in at the office then get home.” JR said giving me a hug.
“Are you still on comp time?” I asked as Dusty came over and hugged me.
“Yeah but I need to see if Ellis has left anything for us to go back to.”
I giggled when I heard that. “Well, you didn’t get a call from the Sec Nav so I’m guessing he’s behaved himself.”
“Yeah, you’re right buddy.” JR said as they headed for the door.
I went to the residence and found Bennie in my room unpacking my suitcase. “I’m glad we didn’t stay away any longer than we did love. You’re out of clean clothes.”
“What should I do baby, go around naked?”
“Yeah, that works for me.” Bennie said smiling as he dumped my dirty clothes into the hamper.
“When you were talking to Russell Mathews you said you had some friends who were willing to help on the hotline.”
“Yeah, I’m sure Jake and Cal would be glad to help. I bet Rocky and Chris would help too.”
“They’re all perfect candidates baby. I have to call the US Attorney about something so why don’t you call Jake and Cal?”
Bennie grabbed his cell phone then went over to his room while I called David Miller. “Hi Ace, I see you got my surprise?”
“Yes I did David, how’d you get it so fast?” I asked as I sat down and booted up my PC.
“I took a trip to the Cayman Islands. When I met with banking officials, they were hesitant at first but when I presented them with the evidence we had, they showed me what they had. When they saw the pieces to the puzzle fit together, they gladly gave us copies.”
“Are you going to get an indictment?
“Not yet Ace, I have plenty of time. His case has been put on the docket for Monday and I’m going to need you there.”
“Who else will you need?” I asked pulling out a legal pad.
“I’ll need every person involved with the investigation.” David said.
“I’ll fax you over a list so you can send out subpoenas. David, I have one more question. Is there any way you can seize that money?”
“I’ll talk with them and once we can get a guilty verdict, we can then start seizure proceedings.”
“Alright but was the account frozen so no one can remove funds?”
“Yes Ace, I did manage to get them to agree to it. Also, if anyone does try to access it, they’ll notify us but Peterson had been the only person.”
I felt a lot better after hearing that. “Thanks David and I’ll get that list to you ASAP. Oh, what about Nate’s trial? Has that been put on the docket yet?”
“Not yet, but I think he’ll accept the plea I’ve offered him.”
“Sounds good David and I’ll get that list over to you.”
“Thanks Ace.” David said then I ended the call.
I pulled out my file on Harold Peterson then started reviewing it. Over the weekend, I’d have to talk to Johnny and see if he could cover for me at school while I was in court. I set the file down then went out to talk to Gloria. “Hola Señor Ace, it’s nice to have everyone back home.”
I went over to her and hugged her. “Si Gloria, I’ve missed your cooking.”
She patted my stomach then laughed. “Si I can tell. You’re wasting away to nothing.”
I turned red. “Can I ask a favor? Tomorrow and Thursday I’m bringing Bennie to the academy and classes start at 7am.”
“You’ll need breakfast before you go.” She said. “What time do you have to leave?”
I nodded. “We’ll need to leave here at 6:30 so we can get there in plenty of time. But if that’s too early for you, I can stop and get us something on the way.”
“Oh Señor Ace, you know I can’t let you leave without a good meal.” She said playfully slapping my arm then pulling me into a hug.
“You spoil me Gloria.” I said then kissed her on the cheek.
The next morning, my alarm went off at 5am. I yanked the covers down and playfully slapped Bennie on his naked butt. “Rise and shine sleepyhead.”
He moaned as I made my way into the bathroom so I could take a leak. He staggered in and started relieving himself. “What time is it?”
“It’s time to get up baby.” I said turning the shower on. “We have a busy day.”
Bennie was about to step into the shower when he spotted the clock on his nightstand. “It’s 5AM Ace. What are we doing up this early?”
I gave him a hug then opened the shower door. “I have a surprise for you.”
“And it means getting up at five in the morning?”
I smiled then led him under the spray of water closing the door behind me. “Yeah it does.”
We got ourselves clean then I headed out to the dining room for my first cup of coffee. I poured Bennie a glass of OJ then sat down. “So what are we going to do?”
I finished my first cup of coffee then got up and refilled my cup. “Well, didn’t you say you wanted to be a secret service agent?”
His eyes lit up. “Wow, you mean I’m going out with you on a case? What is it? I better get my vest on.”
I fought to keep from laughing but I was pleased at his enthusiasm. “Relax baby, you’re not going with me on a case but rather where it all begins.”
“Huh?” Bennie said as he guzzled down his juice.
“Yes baby, for every agent, it starts at the academy.”
His face suddenly sunk. “What are we going to do there?”
“Well, I’ve gotten permission for you to sit in on some classes today and tomorrow.”
“What ones, do you know?” He asked as Gloria brought breakfast in.
I took a mouthful of it then took a mouthful of coffee. “I’m not sure love. I don’t know where they are in this evolution.”
After breakfast, we got ready to go and Tonka was sitting by the elevator. We took him out then Bennie looked at me. “Can’t he come too?”
“I don’t know baby. We’ll be in classes so I think he’d be bored.”
“I think you might be right. I know he’ll be happy being here or with Johnny.”
As Bennie and I were heading back to the residence, I saw Tonka take off. It was still dusk out so I couldn’t see who was coming so I just hollered as Bennie and I took off after him, “Tonka heel.”
He stopped then as Bennie and I got close, I saw who was walking towards us. “Hi guys, I didn’t expect him out this early.”
“I’ve got permission to show Bennie what the academy is like otherwise, I’d still be asleep.”
“Where are they in the rotation?” Johnny asked.
“I don’t know.” I said. “Can you watch him today?”
“You boy shouldn’t be taking off like that.” Johnny said as he looked down at Tonka. “You know he can stay with me anytime.”
Bennie and I returned to the residence so I could let Gloria know we were leaving. It took about twenty minutes to get to the academy. When we pulled onto the grounds, Bennie’s head started turning. “Wow, this place is huge.”
“Yes it is love. Everything you’ll need to learn about being an agent is taught here.”
“How long is the training?”
I found a place to park by the administration building then we headed inside. “The training lasts a year.”
“Wow,” Bennie said as he looked around. “Ace, what is that building over there?”
“Those are living quarters. Some students come in from other areas of the country and need a place to live.” I said as we entered the building then I saw Evelyn standing there. “What are you doing here?”
I stepped over to her. “I just got wind you were bringing Bennie here.”
“I thought since he wants to join the service I’d give him a little taste of what the training here is all about.” I said as she gave me one of her looks.
“Do you know where this class is in their training?”
I shook my head. “No, but…” I started.
She put her hands on her hips. “You should have discussed this with me.”
“Why,” I asked. “I’m well aware of every aspect of the training that goes on here. Now, do you think I’d just bring Bennie here without discussing it with The President first?”
As soon as I mentioned Ben’s name she stood there frozen not knowing what to say. “Well, I didn’t know.”
“Bennie wait here with Evelyn, I’ll be right back.” I said giving her a look then went in to see the training director.
The director and I talked for several minutes and I was surprised that today and tomorrow were half days. He and I came out into the hall. I motioned to Bennie then the three of us went to the class room. As soon as I opened the door, the instructor stopped talking. When the director came in the instructor shouted, “Attention.”
“At ease,” The man said as Bennie stepped inside. “We have a guest here today. He’ll be sitting in with you today and tomorrow. “I’d like you all to meet Benjamin Jacobs and Special Agent Rich Mason.”
I heard gasps then a voice asked, “The President’s son?”
Bennie turned a little red. “I was when I woke up this morning.”
I spotted a table with two chairs open so I led Bennie over and sat down so the instructor could resume with the class. He began talking then stopped and started passing something around. “I want you all to take a good look at this.”
A few seconds later the object came back to us. Bennie looked at it then stood up to return it to the instructor. “I wouldn’t try to spend that if I were you.”
The instructor stopped and looked at him. “Why not, Mr. Jacobs?”
Bennie smiled. “Because it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on. Well, maybe not now.”
“How so?”
Bennie took the bill back then held it up to the light. “If you look, you’ll see Lincoln’s face in the watermark. That would be great had it been a $5.00 bill but someone’s turned it into a twenty.”
“You have a good eye.”
Bennie smiled. “Thanks but I’ve been reading a lot of Ace’s books.”
“Do I take it you would like to join the service one day?”
“Yeah, I hope to. This fall I’ll be going to Georgetown.”
The instructor took the counterfeit bill. “Well good luck. You have a great mentor there with Agent Mason.”
It felt good when he said it but I wondered how he’d feel if he knew our relationship.
As Bennie turned to come back to our table we heard a voice. “Why?”
Bennie stopped and the instructor started scanning the room. “Why what,” Bennie asked.
I stood up and tried to see who would answer. “Why do you want to become an agent?”
Before Bennie could answer, the instructor spoke. “Stand when you speak.”
The cadet stood and I tried to judge his demeanor. “Why do you want to become an agent?”
“Why not?” Bennie started.
“Why wouldn’t you just follow your father?” He asked.
“That’s easy, my Dad is a lawyer then entered politics. That’s not for me.”
“You could get any job you want…”
Bennie stopped him. “I’m not about to use the fact my Father is or was the President to get a job. I’m my own person.”
That seemed to appease the cadet so Bennie was able to get back to our table. The instructor continued with the class then at 9:30 we took a break. Before everyone filed out he made an announcement. “Next class is at the range. I want everyone there by 9:50.”
The cadets filed out then Bennie looked at me. “The range?”
I smiled then nodded. “Have you ever fired a weapon before?”
“Not since I was younger. I had a .22 rifle but I’ve never shot a pistol before.”
We went outside and found a drink machine. I got us each a soda then we sat down and talked. “I have one with me I think you can handle now.”
Bennie smiled. “Can I see it?”
Since we weren’t at the range, weapons weren’t allowed to be displayed. “Not here.”
I saw that it was getting close to the start of the next class so Bennie and I walked over to the range.
When we entered, I saw the instructor talking to several people. I decided to stay back until one of the people looked over at me. Right away, I recognized him then broke out into a smile. He came over and patted me on the shoulder. “How the hell are you Mason?”
“I didn’t think they’d still have you around here.” I countered laughing.
“Oh yeah,” He said then looked at Bennie. “I heard you made it to the President’s security detail.”
I nodded then looked at Bennie. “Bennie, this is Special Agent Mike Flint. He was the range supervisor when I was a cadet.”
Bennie extended his hand. “Nice to meet you Sir.”
He shook Bennie’s hand then looked back to me. “I hope you’ve learned to shoot better than when you were here.”
Bennie looked at Mike then over to me. “He couldn’t shoot?”
“Don’t listen to him.” I said. “I always was in the top five in the class.”
Mike went over to the cadets and told them where to go then came back over to us. “Do you want to let this young man shoot?”
I nodded my head then he led us into a smaller area with just a few lanes. I was about to speak when I heard the door open. I looked up then stood there in surprise. “Pete, what are you doing here?”
“Evelyn said you were here today and I used to be an instructor here.”
I knew when Bennie started classes, I wouldn’t be teaching him. In fact, all I’d be able to do is sit back and watch. I reached down to my ankle and took out what I’d brought to have Bennie try to fire. I dropped the magazine then cleared the chamber and handed it to Pete. “Alright Pete. Bennie, Agent Morgan is going to work with you.”
“What’s that Ace?”
“That’s a .380. It’s got more kick than a 22 but not that of the forty cal we use.”
I stepped back and let Pete work with Bennie. I was about to put on my noise suppressors when I saw Mike heading towards me. “Do you remember this?” He asked as he handed me a pistol.
“Hell yeah I remember that.”
“Do you think you can finally hit the black?”
“Just watch me.” I said.
I went down a few slots loaded three rounds in the magazine then prepared to fire. I took aim then squeezed off the first round. The first round missed totally. “I see nothing’s changed.”
I took aim again but this time aimed at 6 o’clock. This round missed totally too then on my last shot I aimed at 12 o’clock. The round hit the target but just barely. “What the hell have you done with this?”
“Nothing,” He said giggling.
I pulled my service weapon out then fired three rounds hitting the target dead center. “Nothing Mike?” I asked.
“Alright, you got me.” He said. “I filed the bottom of the front sight.”
“Mike that’s crap and you know it.”
“Relax Rich, no one uses that weapon to qualify. I just use it to make certain cadets sweat.”
“That’s not funny.” I said as my cell rang then stepped out. “Mason.”
“Ace, this is Ed. I just got wind that Carl Mathews was picked up by Metro PD.”
“For what?”
“An assault on Chuck Trent.”
“WHAT?” I shouted. “That’s absurd. Where’s his father?”
“I don’t know Ace.” Ed said as I was trying to think.
“Where was he picked up?” I asked.
“Over at the school.”
“I’m heading over to Metro. Pete’s here and is working with Bennie on the range so I’ll have him bring Bennie back to the residence.”
“I take you’re not going to tell him about this?”
“Oh no Ed. He’ll want to come with me and I need to find out everything that happened and I can’t do it with Bennie in hysterics.”
“OK Ace, I’ll see you when you get back here.”
I ended the call then went to talk to Pete. Bennie was bringing his target in then turned around and saw me standing there. “Look Ace.”
I looked at his target then smiled. “Nice shooting Bennie.” I said smiling.
“Bennie, reload another five rounds then try shooting with one hand.” Pete told Bennie.
While Bennie was doing this I took Pete aside. “Pete, I have a matter to take care of. Classes end at noon, I need you to bring Bennie back to the residence.”
“I can do that. What’s going on?” Pete asked.
“I’m not totally sure.” I said handing him the keys to the Hummer. “How’d you get here?”
He handed me the keys to his vehicle. “I brought my Charger. It’s parked beside yours.”
“OK, no stops on the way back.”
Pete nodded his head then I went over to Bennie. “I have something urgent to take care of, Pete will bring you back to the residence.”
He frowned but nodded his head. “Alright Ace.”
I stopped and saw Mike then signed off accounting for the three rounds I fired at the range then hurried out to Pete’s car. When I left the academy, traffic was a nightmare. I was glad this was a service car so I hit my lights and made it to Metro’s Headquarters in ten minutes. I parked in front of the building and as I headed inside a voice shouted at me. “Hey, you can’t park there.”
I wasn’t in the mood for that crap. “If you touch it, you’ll have more headaches than you can shake a stick at.”
I went to the desk and saw the duty sergeant. “Yeah, what can I do for you?”
I flipped my credentials out. “Where’s Carl Mathews?”
He stood there then stuffed half a doughnut into his mouth. He was just about to swallow when I slammed my hand on the desk causing him to start choking on his snack. After he got his coughing under control he got his clipboard. “The detectives have him. Go through the double doors then turn left and you’ll see juvenile.”
I ran down the hall and saw the door the sergeant told me about. I was about to go in when I saw an interrogation room. I immediately headed for the door when I heard another voice. “You can’t go in there.”
I turned around and flipped out my credentials then hung them on my jacket. “That kid in there is a minor.”
“Not according to the law agent, he’s seventeen.”
I went over to the speaker and turned the volume up. “Come on kid, we got you dead to rights. Why’d you beat the kid?”
“I didn’t touch him.” Carl said. “I want my father.”
“In time,” The man said. “Now why don’t you give us your side of this?”
“Fuck you, I already told you I didn’t hurt him.”
Carl pissed the detective off. He got right into Carl’s face. “Now talk smartass.”
I couldn’t take any more so I opened the door and stepped inside. As soon as Carl saw me he called my name. “Ace.”
The cop started to turn around. “No one is allowed in here.”
When he was facing me his eyes got big. “Do you want to explain the way you’ve been questioning him?”
“I don’t have to explain myself to you.”
“Is he under arrest?” I asked
He started squirming. “Yeah.”
“Where’s the signed Miranda Warning form?” I asked looking over to the mirror. “I know you’re still out there so get your ass in here NOW!”
The man came in and tried to calm me down. “We’re doing everything by the book agent.”
“Oh really,” I fired at them. “Where’s the signed Miranda Warning form?”
“Well uh…” One of the detectives stammered.
“I’ll take that to mean there isn’t one. Now, this means you’ve violated the law. Carl, come on, we’re leaving.”
“Now just a minute,” The older cop said. “He’s still a suspect in an assault.”
“Wait a minute, either he’s a suspect or he’s under arrest. You can’t have it both ways.”
The first cop looked at me. “He’s under arrest.”
“Based on?” I asked.
“Look at his feet. His shoes are covered in blood. His hands are too.”
“Is that all you have?” I asked. “Carl, let me see your hands.”
He stuck them out. “I didn’t beat him up.”
I looked at his hands. “How’d you get the blood on them Carl?”
“I held his head after I called 911.”
“Don’t you mean after you beat the crap out of him?” The smart ass cop fired.
I got into his face. “You don’t know shit here detective.”
“Oh yes I do.” He countered. “He and some of his rich bitch friends captured him after he and another kid jumped the Jew President’s brat.”
I knew what he was referring to. “That’s just enough.” I said as I pulled my cell out and placed a call. “May I speak to Cal Mathews please, Special Agent Rich Mason calling?”
“I’m sorry Agent Mason, Mr. Mathews no longer works here.”
“Excuse me?” I asked.
“That’s correct; he’s been confirmed to the federal bench.”
I covered my mouth. “Oh that’s right. By chance, would you happen to have his phone number?”
“Yes I do,” She replied.
I entered the number into my cell then saved it. “Thank you very much.
I ended the call then called Cal. “Cal Mathews please; this is Special Agent Rich Mason.”
I was put on hold then I heard a familiar voice. “Ace how are you?”
“I’m fine Cal and I hear congratulations are in order.”
“Thanks my friend now what can I do for you?”
I was watching the two detectives as I talked to Cal then I decided to make them shit their pants. “Well Your Honor, it seems Metro PD picked Carl up…”
“They what?” He interrupted. “Why, how, what did he do?”
“They’ve made a serious allegation against him.” I started then put the call on speaker.
“Wait a minute, was he Marandized?”
“The detective is right here Your Honor.” I said smiling at Carl.
“Well then he better damn sight start explaining.” Cal shouted.
I looked at the cop. “Uh well…”
“Quit playing cover your ass.” Cal interrupted. “Ace, I’m appointing you as his Guardian Ad Litem. I’ll ask one more time, did you give him his rights?”
Just then the door opened and a woman came in. “I’m Captain Olivia Franks…”
Cal heard that. “Captain Franks, this is Judge Calvin Mathews. One of your detectives arrested my son and started questioning him without giving him his rights.”
Captain Franks turned red. “Your Honor, I’m terribly sorry.”
“I have a case coming up. Agent Mason is my son’s Guardian Ad Litem.”
“Yes Your Honor.” She said. “Once again, I’m terribly sorry.”
Cal hung up then I looked at the captain. “Ma’am you have a serious problem in your command.”
“Excuse me Agent Mason?” She replied.
“That’s right, this man…” I started but got interrupted.
“That’s Detective…” She countered then I interrupted.
“Not if I have anything to say about it.” I said then my phone rang. “Mason.”
“Agent Mason, there is an Officer Kent Woodis with Metro PD on the line for you. He said it’s very important he talk with you.”
I stepped out into the hall. “Put him through.”
“Agent Mason, this is Officer Woodis with Metro PD.” He said as I found a chair to sit in.
“Yes Officer Woodis, what can I do for you?”
“My partner and I talked to the young man who was severely assaulted.”
“Was he able to identify his attacker?” I asked.
“Yes Sir he did and it’s attackers.”
“What are their names?” I asked pulling out my notepad.
“Zane and Christine Weller.” Kent said.
The name took me a little by surprise. “Have you picked them up?”
“Yes we have and the female is trying to make a deal already.”
“How old are they?”
“They’re both twenty years old.”
“Good work Officer Woodis. I’ll meet you at central booking. Put the female in the front seat with you. I want them kept separated and be sure to search the male thoroughly.”
“Will do Agent Mason and thanks for talking with me.”
“One more question, how’d you get my name?” I asked.
“I was one of the officers at Georgetown Exeter Academy the day President Jacobs’s son was assaulted.”
“I’m glad you were there that day.” I said. “How long will it take you to arrive?”
“About ten minutes.”
“Fine, I’ll see you then.” I said then ended the call.
I went back into the interrogation room and stood Carl up then removed the handcuffs. “Just what do you think you’re doing?”
“Just what it looks like,” I said leading Carl to the door.
“I’ll have your badge.” He said stepping in front of me.
“And I’ll have yours.” I fired back. “Had you done your job…”
“I did my job. I’ve arrested the person responsible for beating up that Jew lover.”
Carl pushed him on the shoulder. “Don’t talk about him like that.”
The cop spun around and pushed Carl sending him flying against the wall. “Now you’ve just added another charge against you.”
“Detective Gowns that’s just enough.” Captain Franks shouted.
“You saw it,” Gowns shouted. “He assaulted me.”
I went over and helped Carl up. “Are you alright son?”
“Yeah Ace, I’m fine. It’s a good thing I have a hard head.”
I looked at the wall and there was a dent in it. “Officer Gowns, you’re under arrest.”
“Like hell.”
Captain Franks held her hand out. “I’ll take your shield and weapon.”
“WHAT?” He shouted.
“You’re suspended pending an investigation by IAB.” She said taking his weapon. “Agent Mason, Carl is free to go.”
I looked at Gowns. “You’ve not seen or heard the last from me.”
“Is that a threat?” He asked as I opened the door.
“No, that’s a promise.” I answered as Carl and I walked out. “Come on son, we have to get over to central booking.”
“How come Ace?” Carl asked as we got to the car.
“The real people that beat Chuck up have been arrested.”
“Who did it.” Carl asked as I started the engine.
“I don’t remember their first names but their last is Weller.”
Carl gasped. “Do you think this is payback?”
“It makes sense but they’ve really stepped into it.”
Carl started giggling. “If you’re handling it, they’ve grabbed a tiger by the tail.”
It only took a couple of minutes for us to find central booking. As soon as we walked in a uniformed officer started heading for us. “Are you Agent Mason?”
I nodded my head. “Yes I am and this is Carl Mathews.”
The officer extended his hand out. “I’m Officer Kent Woodis. I want to apologize…”
“There’s no need for that officer, you didn’t do it.”
Kent led us over to the booking desk. “We’re here to see the two suspects we just brought in.”
“They’re in isolation.” The desk sergeant shot out.
“For what?” Kent fired back.
“Because they’re juveniles.”
“Since when did the age of consent suddenly get raised?” I asked.
“Shut up.” The sergeant said. “I was informed they’re juveniles and that’s good enough for me.”
I pulled my credentials out and slammed them on the counter. “A person’s WORD.” I shouted causing everyone to look at us. “Just who the hell is the person and what proof did he submit.”
“Detective Gowns informed me.”
“I think you better check with his commanding officer, that individual has been suspended.”
“When I get around to it.”
That totally pissed me off. I looked at Kent and handed him my cell phone. “Can you get me Juvenile?”
He entered the number and handed it back. “Captain Franks please, Special Agent Mason calling.”
I was put on hold then I heard a female voice. “Agent Mason, what can I do for you?”
“There is a booking sergeant here who is following the instructions of Detective Gowns.”
“Let me speak to him.” She said.
“Captain Franks would like to have a word with you.”
I handed him the phone then a few seconds later he handed it back. “You Feds think you’re hot shots.”
Kent got into the man’s face. “Listen fat ass…”
I put my hand on his shoulder. “Sergeant, if I wanted to, I could have those two taken out of here and moved into a Federal Detention Center.”
“No way…”
“Yes way, the young man that was assaulted is on probation from a federal crime so that puts it in my jurisdiction.”
The sergeant knew when he was beat so he opened the door for us to enter then led us to the jail. He pointed to a cell with a table in it. “Wait here while I get them.”
The first person he brought was the male. “Who the hell are you?”
“Why don’t you just sit down and shut your trap.” I said as he stood there glaring at me and Kent.
He decided to get cocky. “Why don’t you just make me?”
He was still wearing the chains the guard brought him down in. I walked behind him then pushed him down onto the bench then took my cuffs out. There were holes drilled into the metal bench so I attached one end of my cuffs into the hole then locked the other around the chain that was wrapped around his waist. “Why don’t you try and stand up now Mr. Smartass.”
He tried but got his ass up about an inch. “Hey, undo these now.”
I started laughing. “His tune really changed, didn’t it Officer Woodis.”
Kent was laughing at him too. “Yeah Agent Mason, he’s not so tough now.”
“I’ll get you two.” He screamed.
“Oh I’m shaking in my shoes.”
The guard returned with the female. I led her in then sat her on the other side of the table. “What’s your name?” I asked her as she sat down.”
“Don’t you say a fucking word bitch.”
I sat beside her. “Don’t worry about him. He can’t do squat.”
“My name is Christine…” She started.
“I said keep your fucking mouth shut you dumb cunt.”
“If you don’t keep your mouth shut I’ll gag you.” I said staring at him. “Now, what’s your name?”
“Why don’t you kiss my ass cop?” He said then spit at me.
“Guard,” I shouted.
A guard walked up. “What do you need?”
“Bring me a gag, this prick hasn’t learned table manners.”
“No way.” He said as the guard left.
Christine looked at him then over to me. “That big mouth is Zane Weller.”
“You fucking cunt.” He said spitting again.
The guard returned and handed me a gag and a mesh bag. I took the gag and put it around his mouth. He kept his mouth closed but that lasted for a few seconds as I pulled it tight. The knot in it pushed his lips against his teeth causing pain so he opened his mouth then I tied the gag in place and put the mesh bag over his head. Once he was quieted, I went back to talking with Christine. “What’s your last name?”
Zane tried to interrupt but all he could do was emit muffled grunts. “It’s Weller too. Who are you?”
“My name is Special Agent Rich Mason. I’m with the Secret Service.”
Her eyes got big, “The Secret Service? How’d you get involved in this?”
“Tell me what your involvement in this was.” I asked looking her in the eyes.
“What do you want to know?”
“First off, what’s your relationship to Zane?”
“He’s my cousin.”
“Why did you two beat up Chuck Trent?”
She sat there quietly for several minutes. “We were paid to.”
“Paid to?” Kent asked.
She weakly nodded her head. “Yeah, by a…”
Zane started going ballistic trying to scream through the gag. I walked over to him and slapped him on the back of the head. “Calm down.”
He did as I told him so I lifted the back of the mesh bag and released the gag. “Shut up Christine. You’re in this up to your eyeballs too.”
“The hell I am.” She shouted back.
“You better think again.” Zane retorted. “Half of that money is sitting in your bank account.”
“You bastard,” She yelled. “I told you I wanted nothing to do with this.”
“Well guess what, you are.”
“I didn’t deposit that money Agent Mason.”
“Sure you didn’t.” Zane said laughing.
“I DIDN’T!” She said again. “And I can prove it.”
“Sure you can bitch.” Zane said.
I’d had enough of this prick, “Guard.”
The guard came back to the cell. “Yeah, what is it this time?”
“Watch your mouth.” I said removing my cuffs from Zane’s chains. “Take him back to his cell.”
“You talk bitch and you’re dead. YOU HEAR ME, YOU’RE DEAD!”
“Congratulations loud mouth, you just added another charge to what you have now.” I said as he was led away then I turned to look at Christine. “OK, how can you prove you didn’t deposit that money into your account?”
She took a deep breath then let is out slowly. “First off you gotta protect me. If I tell you everything, I will be dead.”
“Alright, we’ll protect you.” I said trying to get her to relax.
“How,” She asked. “I don’t want lip service just so you’ll get me to spill my guts then get tossed in some cell to get killed by some crazed bitch.”
“I’ll get you into Witness Protection.”
She thought for a minute then sighed. “Alright Agent Mason, I’m taking you at your word you’ll protect me.”
“Zane took my ATM card and deposited $1,000.00 cash into my account. He put the other half into his.”
“Do you have the deposit ticket?”
She nodded her head. “Yeah, it’s in my purse. They have it here with the rest of my personal things.”
“Kent, can you get her purse?” I asked.
Kent got up and called for the guard. While he was gone, I continued talking to Christine. “Are you related to Dean Weller?”
“Yeah, we’re all cousins.”
“How’d you get mixed up with Dean?” I asked.
“Zane and Dean hate Jews with a passion. When this new President was elected, Dean went crazy.”
“Crazy how,” A voice asked.
I looked up and there was Kent along with a guard. He came into the cell and handed Christine her purse. She dug around then pulled out a piece of paper. “Here’s the deposit ticket.” She said as I looked at it.
“May I keep this?” I asked as she nodded her head then I put it into my pocket. “How’d Dean go crazy?”
“He was saying that the President wouldn’t make it through his first ninety days in office. Then when he found out his son went to the same school as Dean, he vowed he’d kick the hell out of him and he did.”
This was turning into a real nightmare. “Alright Christine, who paid you?”
“A cop.” She said.
Kent started shaking his head. “No way girlie.”
I looked at him. “Relax Kent, what she’s said so far has been fact, now what was this cop’s name?”
Over at the academy, Bennie and Pete were finishing up at the range. “You did real well Bennie.”
Bennie was picking up his brass and putting it into the can. “Thanks Pete, I had to good teacher too.”
“Did Ace teach you how to shoot?”
Bennie shook his head. “Un un,” Bennie answered as he dumped a big handful of brass into the can. “I meant you.”
Pete smiled at the compliment. “Thanks.”
Bennie loaded the magazine then slapped it into the weapon. “Pete, I’ve spent the last two hours with you and not once did you ever yell at me when I made mistakes. You’re a good agent and teacher so what happened that day with Chris?”
Pete surveyed the range then opened the door then they headed out to the Hummer. “I don’t know Bennie.” Pete replied then pulled his cell out. “I’ve thought about that day many times and I wish I could come up with an answer. Now, for the good work you’ve done here, I think a reward is in order.”
As soon as they stepped outside, Pete made his call. “Ed, is The President available?”
“Yes he is, is there a problem?” Ed asked.
“Oh no Ed, Bennie did a great job at the range and I’d like to get him a little something.”
“And what would that be, Agent Morgan?” A voice came on.
“Mr. President, I didn’t know you’d picked up.”
“No problem Pete now what kind of surprise did you have in mind?”
“Well, I hear there is a small shop that has the best ice cream in DC so I thought I’d get him a sundae or a milkshake.”
“Only if you get two and get them to go. Gloria will have my hide if he doesn’t eat all of his lunch and by the way, you’re joining us.”
“Yes Sir, is Agent Miller joining us too? If he is, I’ll get one for him as well.”
“Thank you and yes, Ed’s joining us.”
“We’ll be back to the residence as soon as we get our treats Mr. President.”
“Oh, don’t forget Ace now.” Ben said before ending the call.
“Oh no Sir, I couldn’t forget him.” Pete said then ended the call.
Pete had stepped away from Bennie when he made the call so he couldn’t hear what was going on. “Are we ready to go now Pete?”
Pete unlocked the doors with the remote then nodded his head. “Climb in man and let’s get outta here.”
Bennie got into the Hummer and buckled his seat belt. A few minutes later, they were making their way through the lunch time traffic. At a stop light Pete was supposed to make a right turn but instead he continued straight. “Where are we going Pete?” Bennie asked knowing the route back to the residence.
“Um well,” Pete started to say.
“I know the way home.” Bennie said.
“Alright Bennie,” Pete started. “I have a surprise for you and before you ask, that’s what the phone call was about. I called your Dad and got his permission.”
Bennie broke into a huge smile as soon as he heard what Pete had said. “Wow thanks Pete.”
There were a number of cars in front of the store so they had to park up the block. Pete looked around before he got out of the Hummer then he undid his seatbelt and got out. “Stay close Bennie.”
“Yes Sir,” Bennie said as he walked close to Pete. “I’m used to this Pete.”
“So you know when I say something…” Pete started.
“To do it, no questions asked.” Bennie said finishing the sentence.
Pete put his arm around Bennie’s shoulder. It was something Ace did all the time so he felt comfortable. Pete tried to talk with Bennie but his eyes were moving left and right as they walked up the street. Several times, Bennie felt him slide his hand into his jacket making sure his gun was there. Bennie looked up at him. “Relax a little Pete, Ace has taught me to keep my eyes open and how to spot potential bad guys.”
They came to a cross street and had to wait for the light to change. Both Pete and Bennie quickly scanned the area while waiting for the light to change. As soon as it did, they hurried across because lights didn’t stay green for long. Bennie looked out and saw the store. “What’ll you have dude, chocolate of vanilla?” Pete asked.
“I’ll have…” Bennie started then Pete went down in a heap.
“Pete!” He shouted then looked up.
Bennie was staring at the barrel of a gun. “Now you fucking kike, you’re going to hell.”
<BANG>
Back at the jail, Christine was explaining how Zane had gotten involved helping Dean when my cell started vibrating. “GUARD!” I shouted as loud as I could.
“Hold your horses.” He said taking his time walking towards the cell.
As soon as he opened it, I bolted for the front. “What’s going on?” Kent asked as he ran behind me.
I was pulling my cell out and saw a map with a dot blinking. I stopped and retrieved my pistol. “Bennie’s in trouble.” I said as I saw Cal talking to Carl. “I’m glad you’re here Cal, I have to go.”
Carl saw the seriousness in my face. “What’s wrong Ace?”
“Bennie’s in trouble, that’s all I know.”
I ran towards the door. “CALL ME!” Carl shouted as I headed for Pete’s charger.
I peeled out of the parking lot and ran lights and siren all the way. I knew where he was but wondering why he was there. ‘Damn Pete, I’ll have your ass for this one.’
Just then my cell rang. “Mason.” I shouted
“Ace, we have agents on the way.” Ed said.
“What the fuck was he doing there?” I asked.
“Calm down Ace,” Ed started saying.
“Calm down my ass.” I fired back. “Why wasn’t…”
“He had Ben’s approval.” Ed shouted.
I saw traffic getting heavy so I had to slow down then I saw a crowd. “I’m on scene, I gotta go.” I said then ended the call then put the car in park and ran over to the crowd. “Secret Service, make a hole.”
I wiggled my way through the crowd and saw Bennie kneeling beside Pete. I then saw a man lying on the ground with a single gunshot wound to the chest. I went over and checked the man for a pulse but wasn’t able to find one so I turned my attention to Bennie. I knelt beside him and gently wrapped my arm around his shoulder. As soon as I did, he started mumbling. “I shot him Ace, I shot him.”
I knew that was impossible. “Who shot him love?” I whispered softly.
He looked up at me as tears started falling. “I shot him.” He said then pulled his hand out of the pouch on his shirt.
I saw the .380 he’d been shooting at the range so I eased my hand out and gently held onto the gun. “Let it go baby.”
He let it go then I secured it by removing the magazine then clearing the round in the chamber. I heard sirens getting louder and louder then heard Pete moan. He opened his eyes and immediately focused on Bennie. He reached out and grabbed his hand. “Oh my god dude, tell me you’re alright.” Pete said softly.
Bennie held onto it tightly. “I’m fine Pete. Tell me where you’re hurt.”
He tried to reach for his head but Bennie wouldn’t let him move. “My head is killing me.”
I spun around so Pete could see me. “Lie still Pete.”
“Ace, is that you?” He asked.
“Yeah buddy, it’s me.”
“I never saw him.” Pete started rambling. “I never saw him.”
Bennie squeezed his hand then leaned down. “Relax Pete, I got him.”
Pete gasped when he heard that then passed out. I checked for a pulse and it was strong just as an ambulance pulled up. Quickly the medics came over and checked the victim then came over to Pete. “Be careful with him. He’s got a head injury. He’s got a strong pulse and is breathing on his own.”
I helped Bennie up so the medics could work on Pete. I took a step backwards with him then I saw a hand reach out and try to grab him. I quickly drew my weapon and pointed it at the person. “I’ll take him.”
“Back off whoever you are.” I said just as I heard a growl. “Tonka heel.”
“I’m the chief of detectives.” He said.
I holstered my piece then went nose to nose with him. “That’s the President’s son.”
“I don’t care who he is, one of my men is dead.”
Bennie looked up. “He attacked Pete.”
“THAT’S BULLSHIT!” He said.
“Since a federal officer was attacked, this is our crime scene.”
“Agent Mason,” I heard a voice call out.
I turned around and saw Evelyn standing there. “Yes Ma’am.”
“Stand down” She said then went over to the suit. “I’m Director Evelyn Morgan, this is our crime scene. If you have any questions, I suggest you contact the Chief of Metro PD.”
The crime scene unit and the coroner’s van pulled up. I watched as they started taping off the area then started taking photos. I wished Dusty and his team was out here, I’d know what to expect. Once photos had been taken, the coroner started examining the body. A tech brought the gurney over then they began preparing to put him into a body bag. I watched as they rolled him onto his side then I saw something. “Hold up guys.”
“Agent Mason, I told you to stand down.” Evelyn said.
“Hang on Evelyn,” I said. “Roll him a little more guys.”
They did as I asked then the tech saw what I did. “We have a gun here.”
The guy snapping photos took several of the weapon then I put gloves on and removed it so the body could be bagged. I cleared the weapon and removed a round in the chamber then went over to the chief of detectives. As I walked over, I saw what appeared to be blood. “If this is Agent Morgan’s blood, it backs up the statement by the President’s son. Also, that man was suspended earlier today so I suggest you find out what’s going on within your own back yard.”
I turned around and saw a tech holding a plastic bag so I put the gun in it so they could run tests on it. I saw Johnny holding on to Bennie so I went over to my love. I was about to talk to him when Evelyn came over and took me by the arm. “Get him back to the residence and I’ll talk with you there.”
I could tell Bennie needed comforting but I couldn’t wrap my arms around him. Johnny came over to me. “How about I drive you two back to the residence?”
“Johnny, your timing is impeccable.” I said as I opened the back door for Bennie then whistled for Tonka.
Tonka jumped inside then Bennie fell into my arms. “Oh Ace…” Bennie cried and with that, he became inconsolable.
I held him as the tears flowed and poor Tonka was whining as he put his head on my open shoulder so I reached back with my free hand and scratched his head. By the time we reached the residence, Bennie was sound asleep against me. Johnny helped me get Bennie out of the Hummer then I picked him up into my arms and brought him to his room. I got him undressed then tucked him into bed then went out to talk to Johnny. As soon as I came out, I saw Evelyn. “What are you doing here?”
“I told you, “I have questions that need answers.” She snapped.
“Look, I need to talk to Adam Graham and fill him in so if you want to be there fine. I’ve been up since 5AM and this day has gone to hell in a hand basket. I’ll call him and see when he can get over then I’ll let you know what time he can be here. Right now, I’m going to take something for a headache and lie down.
I called Adam and he said he’d be over about 2 so I went and joined Bennie in bed. Bennie woke me up when he got up and used the bathroom. I looked at the clock and it was 1:30. I joined Bennie in the bathroom and emptied my bladder. “How are you feeling baby?”
He wrapped his arms around me. “Kinda numb love.” He said softly as he took my hand and we returned to the bedroom.
I put my pants on then slipped my hands into my pockets. I pulled out that ATM receipt Christine gave me. I pulled out my cell and called JR. “Hi Ace, what’s up?”
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” I said. “I need your computer skills.”
“Sure, what have you got?”
“I need you to pull up some ATM security camera footage.”
“Sure,” JR said. “What bank and which branch?”
I looked at the receipt, “BA over on 19th Street.”
“I can do that Ace.” Bennie said standing there with his arms folded across his chest.”
“Alright baby,” I said relenting. “Get your computer on and I’m going to put the call on speaker so you and JR can talk.”
“Why,” He asked. “Don’t you trust me?”
“Just in case you run into a problem, then I can help you.” JR said.
Bennie booted his computer up then started typing on the keyboard. “I’m in,” Bennie said smiling up at me. “What time are we looking for?”
I looked at the receipt. “Yesterday at 2:32 PM.”
“They change the tapes after 24 hours so you might have to go to the branch Ace.” JR said.
“2:32 Ace,” Bennie asked.
I put my hand on his shoulder and looked at the screen. I watched as the tape played. “Freeze it right there.”
Sure enough Christine had given us the truth. “Can you do a screen capture?”
“What do you mean Ace?” He asked.
It’s done like this.” I said as I pushed the Print Screen button. “Now you open your programs and go to Accessories. Now go down to Paint and click on that. In the open box, push Ctrl V.”
“Wow, that photo is in there.” Bennie said. “Now what do I do?”
“Click on File then go down to Save As. Save the file as Zane Weller and save it in JPEG.”
“Where should I save it?” Bennie asked as I went across the hall to get a zip drive.
“Save it onto your desk top. I’m going to have you put it on this zip drive.”
“Is there anything else you need Ace?” JR asked.
“Am I interrupting anything?” I asked as Bennie looked up giving me a devilish smile.
“Not yet but later don’t disturb us.”
“I know what you have on your mind.” Bennie said laughing.
“And you don’t?” JR fired back.
“Who me, I’m an angel.” Bennie said reaching up rubbing my crotch.
Not now,” I said easing his hand down.
“Angel, huh,” JR said.
“Yeah, when he’s sleeping.” I said rubbing my thumb over Bennie’s cheek. “I have another call to make dude, I’ll talk with you both later.”
I called Evelyn next. “What time is Adam due at the residence?” She asked.
“He said he’d be here at 2.” I replied.
“I’m on my way back to the residence now. I went to see Pete.”
“OK, I’ll see you in a few then.” I said then ended the call.
Before I could put my phone away it rang again. I looked and it was the back gate. “Agent Mason, Adam Graham is here. He says he has an appointment with you.”
“Let him in and direct him over to the residence.”
“Yes Sir,” The voice said then I went down to wait for him to arrive.
I saw him pull up then I went out to greet him. “Hi Ace, what’s so important?”
“You’re not going to believe this buddy.” I said as we took the elevator up to the residence.
As soon as we stepped off, we were surrounded by Bennie, Evelyn and Tonka. “Bennie, take Tonka downstairs then join us in the living room.”
I had Evelyn take Adam to the living room while I got the coffee cart. We all fixed ourselves a cup then Bennie came in. “OK Ace, what’s up?”
“Today, Chuck Trent was assaulted.”
“What?” Adam said not believing what he just heard.
“That’s right man,” I said. “I got a call from Ed that Carl Mathews had been charged with the crime.”
“No way,” Bennie said getting animated as he entered the living room.
“Calm down Bennie.” I said. “Evelyn, this case gets more bizarre as it unfolds.”
“What does this have to do with what happened downtown?”
Before I went on, I handed Bennie the zip drive. “I need you to print out this photo for me Bennie. Make several copies and use the photo paper.”
“Right away Ace.” Bennie said as he took the drive and scampered down to his room.
“Adam, an attempt was made on Pete Morgan’s and Bennie’s life and Bennie shot and killed the attacker.”
“Bennie?” Adam asked with a gasp.
I nodded my head. “That’s right.”
Evelyn interrupted. “Ace, we can’t…”
“Evelyn, there’s nothing we can do legally.” I started. “I’m not going to let Bennie make any statement that can be used against him and when you hear everything, I think you’ll agree it was self defense. Adam, you might want to take notes because this can get confusing.”
Adam nodded his head. He was about to speak when Bennie returned. “Who gets these photos?”
“Give one to each of them buddy.” I said then Bennie came over and sat beside me. “Like I said, when Bennie and I were at the academy I got a phone call from Ed telling me Carl Mathews had been picked up and charged with assaulting Chuck Trent. When I arrived, there was a real prick interrogating him. I asked this jerk if Carl was under arrest and at first he said was he was. Later on, I asked the cop again if he was under arrest and he changed his answer telling me he was a suspect. I then got a call from headquarters telling me another Metro PD officer was trying to reach me.”
I took a breather and fixed myself another cup of coffee. “Ace, you don’t really believe Carl had anything to do with beating Chuck up, do you?” Bennie asked.
I shook my head. “No I don’t kiddo.” I said taking another sip of coffee. “I took the call out in the hall and found out that two uniformed officers had gone to see Chuck in the hospital. Right away, Chuck told them Carl Mathews had nothing to do with the assault.”
“So who did?” Bennie asked interrupting.
I didn’t know if he needed to hear this or not but since this did involve him, I let him stay. I put my hand on his shoulder and looked at him. “A name I thought we’d heard the last of and that is Weller.”
“Dean Weller?” Adam asked. “He’s in federal prison.”
“I know,” I started. “Now here is where things get interesting, confusing and downright weird. The people behind the attack were the cousins of Dean; Zane and Christine Weller.”
“How’d they get involved in this?” Evelyn asked.
“That’s the mystery but Christine claims Zane was paid two grand to assault Chuck. I think that was designed as a payback for him agreeing to testify against Dean.”
“He didn’t though,” Adam said. “His own testimony had him sunk and because of it he took a plea.”
I nodded my head. “That’s right but I guess he’s still holding a grudge.”
“So who paid for this?” Evelyn asked.
“Sam Gowns.” I said.
“Who’s he?” Adam asked.
“He was the cop that was questioning Carl Mathews.” I said.
“Ace, where’s Carl now?” Bennie asked.
Before I could answer that, Evelyn fired another question. “How’d you learn the Wellers were paid and who is in this photo?”
I sipped my coffee. “Sorry, I kinda cut to the chase. The uniformed officer I was talking to told me he and his partner were bringing the Wellers to central booking and asked if I could meet them there. I told him I would then told Gowns, Carl was in my custody and I took him with me. Now before you ask, I’d spoken to Cal and filled him in on what had happened. When I arrived at central booking, I couldn’t bring Carl back with me so he waited for me while I talked with the Wellers. It was during that talk that Bennie’s alarm sounded. When I came flying out of the back, I saw Cal there with Carl. I quickly filled him in then raced to the scene. So Bennie, Carl is with his Dad.”
Adam was shaking his head. “Man, there are a lot of questions here.”
“Don’t you know it,” I said. “Evelyn, to answer your question, that’s a photo of Zane Weller at an ATM. He’s making a deposit into Christine Weller’s account. Adam, I need to look at the financial records of Sam Gowns and Keith Weller.”
“Gowns won’t be a problem, but Keith Weller just might be.”
“Ace, don’t you think the FBI should be handling this?” Evelyn asked.
I shook my head. “No Evelyn, this is ours. All of this goes back to the assault on Bennie and I want to know what all of this has to do with that.”
“Ace, why would a cop assault Pete then try and shoot Bennie?” Adam asked.
“That’s another mystery Adam.” I replied refilling my coffee cup.
“I know,” Bennie said as my head spun to look at him. “He called me a fucking kike.”
“Well that fits with some of what we know.” I said sipping my coffee. “But what I don’t understand is why Bennie? He’s not the only Jewish kid here in DC. Adam, have there been any reports of anti Semitic crimes or assaults?”
Adam shook his head. “None that have crossed my desk but if there had been, I’d at least know about it. I can check with the city attorney.”
Just then my cell rang. “Mason.”
“Ace, it’s Ed. Is it true what I’m hearing about Bennie?”
I stood up and went into Ben’s office closing the door. “Yeah it is. Does Ben know what’s happened?”
“No, he’s been in meetings and I’ve been running interference too.”
“Thanks Ed, he doesn’t need to hear that from an outsider. Is he free?”
“He will be a few minutes. He’s just finishing up his last meeting for the day.”
“Good, I need to wrap up a couple of things here then Bennie and I will be down.” I said then ended the call returning to the living room. “Evelyn, have you heard from the lab?”
She shook her head. “Not yet but it’s only been a couple of hours.”
“OK, now how’s Pete?”
“He’s got a cut on the side of his head and the x-rays were negative for a fracture. They want to do a CT scan as a precaution. He has a mild concussion but they expect him to be back to normal in a couple of days.”
“Are they keeping him overnight?”
“The doctor hadn’t made a determination yet. I left a couple of agents there in case they do discharge him, that way he has a way back here.”
I shook my head. “This wouldn’t have happened had I brought Tonka today but I thought he’d be miserable lying in a classroom then at the range.”
“Ace, you had no way to foresee this.”
“Yeah, you’re right. I need to go down and see the President. When you get back to the office, see if you can put a rush on the blood on the cop’s gun.”
When I was talking to Ed, Adam made a call. “Ace, the city attorney hasn’t had any reports of attacks.”
I hated hearing that because it meant Bennie was the target. I’m sorry too that Gowns is dead. “Well, you know what that means Adam.” I said standing up.
“I’m afraid so Ace.”
“I need to head over to the West Wing with Bennie. Can you walk with us?”
“Yeah, my afternoon is free.”
Evelyn headed for the elevator as Bennie, Adam and I headed for the West Wing. I thought about how to ask Adam what I needed to know without putting Bennie in a compromising position. “OK Adam, what are we looking at here?”
“Well, based on the facts we have now it appears Bennie was defending himself and Agent Morgan. If the blood on the weapon is in fact that of the agent’s, that will give even more credence that it was self defense.”
Once again I had to think carefully. “Once we get that report, what will you need to put this to rest?”
“I’ll need the reports from the lab and statements from the parties involved.”
We were near the Oval Office so I didn’t push things any further. “OK Adam thanks and see what you can do about those search warrants.”
Adam nodded his head. “I’ll see what I can do.”
