Chapter 8

Now having my office at home was an advantage because I could give my regular patients 24 hour emergency care. “Dr. Hollander here.”

The man’s voice on the other end was frantic. “Oh Doctor, I’m glad you answered. Our Lab got into my boy’s chocolate and ate almost all of it.”

Now this could cause big problems for the dog as chocolate can be fatal if ingested in large amounts. “How much do you think he ate?”

I heard him holler to his son. “I’m not really sure.”

I tried to calm him down. “OK, bring that and the dog to my office right away. I’ll be ready for you.”

I hung up the phone and shouted for Caleb. “Please feed the cats, then I’m going to need your help. A dog got into some chocolate.”

Caleb hurried towards the garage looking over his shoulder. “Man, that could kill it.”

I opened the front gate and turned the sensor off so it would stay open. I heard a car driving fast up the drive so I knew my patient had arrived. I watched as a man got out and led his dog out of the back of his car as a young man followed in tears. He led the dog over to me. “Hi Doc, I’m Nathan Franklin. You remember this hard head don’t you?”

I looked at the Lab and I couldn’t ever forget him. He was always doing something causing one injury or another. “Come on Logo, let’s get you inside.”

Caleb came out of the cat’s cage and went over to the boy. “Hi, I’m Caleb. Now don’t you worry, Mike will do all he can for your dog.”

The boy quickly ran back to the car. “I’m Steven and I forgot to give the Doctor this.”

Caleb took it then ran inside. “Here Mike.”

I set it on the counter then went into my medication cabinet. I found what I was looking for then prepared a dose of IV vomit. “Thanks kiddo. I’m going to need you to take Logo outside in a minute so he can heave.”

I went back in with the dog then quickly found a vein and gave him the medication. I lifted him off the table and had the boys take him out back. I gave him a plastic trash bag so I could see what he heaved. “Let me know when he spews.”

Caleb gave me a dirty look. “Gee thanks Mike. I love you too.”

I went back and looked at the basket. The label said there was 16 ounces of chocolate in here. I took what was left and set it on a small digital scale I had. “Well Nathan, Logo has a sweet tooth alright. He managed to eat 12 ounces of the chocolate.”

He shook his head. “He had to put his front feet on a table in order to reach it; that damn hard head.”

My biggest problem now was hoping he’d gotten the dog here before he started to digest the candy. For dogs, they can’t handle the theobromide in it and it can cause irreversible kidney damage. “Well, we’ll know soon enough. I’ll then run some blood work on him to see how his kidneys are. He’ll probably need to stay here over night.”

Caleb and Nathan’s son came back in with Caleb holding the trash bag. “Here you go Mike.”

I looked inside the big white plastic trash bag at the purged stomach contents. I thought the boys were gonna lose it when Nathan’s son asked, “How can you poke through that without getting sick?”

I had to admit it wasn’t easy. The first time I did this in Vet School I lost my breakfast. “It’s not easy but if you do it enough, you learn to control things.”

I looked through the pooch’s vomit and there was a lot of chocolate in there. It looked like he might be lucky but I wasn’t taking any chances. I got a catheter and put it on an empty syringe and then got a bag of IV fluids. Caleb looked at me. “Mike, can I show Steven the cats?”

I had to think quickly. “Umm, alright but from outside the cage. Hold this for me first.”

I handed him the end of the IV tubing then wrapped my hand around the dog’s front paw looking for a vein. I found one then slid the catheter in then drew back on the syringe getting a blood sample. I held the end of the catheter in place then removed the leader. I handed Caleb the syringe then took the end of the tubing and connected it to the catheter. I started the IV then taped it in place. I took the syringe from Caleb then he and Steven went outside.

I got the blood work going then all I could do was wait until it was finished. “Come on Nathan, you’ll love this.”

We walked outside and watched as Caleb was showing Steven the tigers. “Are you crazy?”

I shook my head as I walked over to the cage. “I’ve had these cats for almost 2 years now. We feed them every day and Rajah pretty much has free reign around here.”

I undid the lock then went in with the 3 cats. They were around me looking for attention as Nathan stood there with his mouth hanging open. “Steven, would you like to meet Rajah?”

He looked apprehensive but nodded his head. “OK, I guess so.”

I led the juvenile tiger out of the cage then made sure it was closed. He stopped beside me then I had him lie down. I started scratching him then he rolled over on his back. Caleb went over and started rubbing the cat’s belly. “Come on Steven, he’s like a big baby.”

Steven came over and gently put his hand on Rajah then started rubbing him. “Son, you stay here. I have to check the dog’s blood work.”

Caleb nodded his head as I got up and went back inside the office. The blood work was done and I read it. His kidney values were still within normal limits but I would have to run them several more times to make sure there was no damage. I prepared an injection of Vitamin K and gave it to the pooch.

I lowered the table and was about to get the golden Lab on his feet when Caleb, Steven and Raj came in. Raj had seen dogs before and was really good around them but I didn’t know how Logo would take to him. Raj slowly walked over and sat beside the dog. Logo looked at the cat and gave him a casual sniff then put his head back down. I put a lead on the Lab and led him into a large cage for the night. Caleb and Steven fixed up a bed for him then I went into my office and wrote my notes.

When I returned, Raj was laying outside the dog’s cage. It was as if he knew something wasn’t right with him. Nathan came in and saw the cat beside his dog’s cage. “Are you sure about this?”

Caleb went over to the man. “Don’t worry, Raj won’t hurt him. He knows he’s sick and is just watching him.”

I went over to them. “I’ll be checking on him throughout the night. If there are any changes, I’ll let you know.”

Nathan shook my hand. “Thanks Doc for taking care of him. I have to admit one thing, you have a wild family here.”

I had to laugh at that then Steven took my hand. “Thanks Doctor for everything. Those cats are really cool.”

Caleb and I watched as they left then my stomach let me know it was needing food. It was 7:30 and with that afternoon romp in the bed, I hadn’t taken anything out for dinner. I was about to call Caleb when he came in. “Mike what’s for dinner, I’m hungry.”

“How about a pizza?” I asked. “With our fun this afternoon, I forgot to take something out for dinner.”

He came over and smiled. “Hey, I’m always up for pizza. How about meat and extra cheese?”

He gave me a devilish look the raised his eyebrows several times. “Just meat huh?”

He reached up and rubbed my crotch. “Too bad this doesn’t come on pizza.”

I really had to fight firing back at him but my will lost out. “Oh, it can cum on a pizza and a few other places.”

He just giggled. I placed the order for the pizza and had it delivered. As we were waiting Raj came in and nudged my hand. He’d been in with Logo and I was wondering if there was something wrong. I went into the office and looked at the golden lab. His IV was dripping nicely and he appeared to be resting comfortably. I got my stethoscope and listened to his heart. His heart sounds were good. He looked up at me then wagged his tail. I decided to give him some water and see how that stayed down after the medication I’d given him. He drank a little then curled up and relaxed.

I left Raj with him then heard the buzzer letting me know our pizza was here. I opened the gate and waited for the driver. After giving him a nice tip for getting it to us so quickly, I took it inside to 1 starving teen. Between the two of us, that pizza didn’t stand a chance. Caleb tossed the box and plates in the trash then we went in to watch TV.

At 9 I went in and drew another blood sample to check Logo’s kidney values. 15 minutes later, I was looking at his levels and they were still within normal limits. This had to be the luckiest dog I’d ever seen. I refilled his water bowl and left him to rest.

Caleb fell asleep with his head in my lap but I wanted to check on Logo around midnight so I let him sleep. Just before I went to check on the dog, I carried my lover to our bed and gently set him down. I checked on the dog and I had to refill his water bowl and change his IV fluids. He was sitting there wagging his tail like mad then it hit me he probably needed to pee. I grabbed his bag of fluids then put a lead on him so I would keep him from trying to run. After putting him back in his cage, I slowed the drip down until it was just dripping.

Logo curled back up in his cage then looked like he was back off to dreamland. I went inside and turned the lights off then headed to join Caleb in bed. I quickly put on a pair of rubber gloves and grabbed a urine container so I could check it. Caleb led Logo outside and over to the closest tree. He quickly filled the cup then I put the lid on. “I needed a urine sample love. I want to do some tests on it and look at it under the microscope.”

He had a strange look on his face as he led Logo back to the office. “But did you have to get it like that?”

I had to laugh at him. “Well, how should I have done it? Hand him the cup and ask him to fill it for me?”

Caleb was laughing so hard he almost dropped Logo’s IV fluids. “That would be something to see for sure Mike.”

I went into the lab and started working on the urine analysis. After spinning it down, I ran some tests on it then took a drop and put it onto a slide. When I looked at it, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I had thought for sure there would be crystals in it but none were seen. This dog had more lives than a cat. I went into the kennel area and removed his IV then let him go back and rest.

Caleb and I rested together for another couple hours then I fed Logo while he fed the cats. After breakfast, I called Mr. Franklin and told him Logo was fine and good to go home. It was close to noon when Nathan and his son came to pick up Logo then Caleb and I spent the rest of the day by the pool relaxing.
