Chapter 7

That night in their bed Francisco told Rosa of the Patron’s offer. It all made sense but he was a little afraid to accept it.

“Oh Francisco, I know you will be successful. You know more than anyone about construction. You learned from your father and his father before him. You’ll have Eduardo to help, probably Maria’s twins, who adore you, and as needed Juan and probably Tomas. Do it Francisco, this is your chance to be more than a laborer.”

“Are you sure Rosa, what if something happens to the Patron before the company has any success?”

“There are few sure things in life Francisco, you know that. This is a wonderful opportunity that the Patron has given you. Do it for me Francisco. Please Francisco.”

“You know if you ask I cannot refuse. Yes, I shall tell Juan to inform the Patron and ask what is the next step.”

So many things whirled through Francisco’ head as he tried to sleep. Finally exhaustion came and he slept.

The next morning he asked Juan to convey his answer to the Patron. “Juan, be humble, be gracious, show gratitude, very important Juan.”

“I shall tell him properly, papa. Do you think you raised a dummy who does not know how to talk to an important man or deliver an important message?”

“No Juan that is why I entrust this task to you.”

“Obrigado, papa”

Juan met Tomas at the usual place.

After their good morning kiss Juan said, “I shall miss your bothers today. They were much fun to have around.”

“I suspect they will have some fooling around time today.”

“Carlos looks to be smitten with Theresa, no.”

“Si, I thought I heard him sleep talking last night. He was crying out ohh Theresa; ohh Theresa.”

They both had a laugh on that.

Still smiling Juan said, “You should tell to not talk so much of his love at night or you shall send him to papa to have him bay at the window of Theresa.”

They both were laughing again. “Come, my giant, let us go at the trot for training.”

The two boys took off at the trot; Tomas struggled mightily but he was not going to show weakness to Juan again. It was two steps from the Patron’s door that he stopped heaving and gasping and consuming great quantities of air, hands on his knees.

“Good job Tomas, you made it without stopping. You are half dead but you made it. Perhaps you do not have energy for excitement.”

Gasping still Tomas replied, “Leave me to recover you amazing runt; I shall show you excitement.”

Patron said, “I am on the patio boys.”

“I shall come at the trot Patron. I believe the giant will crawl but make it. He did the run without stopping. His mind was strong; his legs and lungs not as much.”

They made it to the patio and presented themselves to the Patron.

“Juan does have great stamina and endurance does he not, Tomas?”

Gasping less, hands now up to his hips, “Si Patron but ….one day I shall… be able to run with him ….and beat him.”

“Ahh, I think not my giant you have way too much weight on you. But it is good to train. The Patron wants us to win the National Championship for him and all of Portimao.”

“Is that why we build the basketball court Patron?”

“Yes, Tomas it is. Now I want you to do your chores early in the morning, so that you have the afternoon for training. Perhaps 9 of the o clock would be a better hour for you to report?”

Juan, said, “perhaps 8:30 of the o clock would be better, Patron. You know how much better we are at chores after excitement. Would that be acceptable?”

“Silly me, Juan I forgot your excitement time, I know how important that is. It helps you to think more with your brain and not with your other members.”

Smiling both boys said, “Si Patron Si.”

“Well what is it; work or excitement first?”

“Perhaps we shall clean the pool first and I can recover.”

“If that works for Juan, it does for me.”

“Si Patron, it needs to be or the giant will have no strength for me.”

The boys stripped to do the pool cleaning and the surrounding patio. Their nakedness, the morning sun and the cool sea breeze hastened their arousal. Their members were pointing their direction as well as to the sky. They refrained from touching, tried not to look, agonized over not kissing, Juan ever the tease keep talking about what he was to do with Tomas’s large member. Their concentration to keep to their tasks was poor if not nonexistent. Finally the Patron almost yelled,

“Ok you two off to the excitement room and then come back and clean the pool properly.”

The two boys dropped what they were doing immediately. They were at the trot until Tomas had gathered up Juan in his arms and then to the run. Their love making was passionate, first kissing and touching all over. Touching each other’s members brought moans of pleasure, when the touching in sensitive areas changed to kissing, nibbling and sucking more moans. Finally, when Tomas mounted Juan his cries of

 “OH YES, YES MY GIANT”

Were heard thought out the villa. The Patron thought possible that was the climax but more was to come. As arousal was replaced by need to release again nothing was held back. Tomas’s grunts and the strength of his thrusts could be heard even felt by the Patron. Finally his explosion of release was brought forth.

“OHH JUAN, AHHEE JUAN I LOVE YOU!!!”

As his baby makers ran up through Juan, you heard.

“GOD, YOU ARE DOING IT, AGAIN. TOMAS I LOVE IT, I LOVE YOU…AHH YES YES!!!

Tomas fell upon Juan as Juan was on his back, his arms around Tomas’s neck, his legs squeezing Tomas’s middle. They kissed and kissed over and over, they could not stop they kept saying one after the other

“I love you, I love you.”

Juan said “please leave it in. Do not take it out please Tomas I love you being in me.”

“It will come out by itself, Juan.”

“Yes but do not hasten it.”

Lest they stay in their excitement all the long day the Patron rang his bell.

“Ohh Tomas I do not want to go. I want to be with you like this you the rest of my life.”

“I too Juan, shall we make him ring a second time.”

“No, he has been so good to both of us and our families. We must be strong and go to him.”

The boys washed a bit and went at the trot to the Patron.

“Patron, forgive us our love is so strong we just wanted to stay locked together in our embrace till the end of our days. Have you ever felt love that way Patron?” Juan said.

“I wish it could be that way for you my boys; alas the world does not allow it. I am glad you have such feelings and had the little time to explore and express them.”

“Obrigado Patron, what shall we do now Patron?” Juan asked.

“Well, finish the pool and patio, Juan the bathrooms need to be cleaned to include the floor washing as well as the kitchen, clothes, towels and bed things need washing, the living room and study need dusting and vacuuming. Tomas after the pool come to me; I have sorely missed your treatments since last week. We shall have it after you are though with the pool. If Juan is not done after the treatment you should help him. We should be at lunch then and after start the basketball training. OK.”

Both boys replied, “Si Patron”

Juan, added, “I have a message from my papa.”

An anxious Patron responded, “Yes, boy, what is it.”

“My papa is very grateful for the opportunity you talked about. He would love to work with you in any fashion you deemed needed and he would like to know what the next step should be and would love to talk further about it at your conveyance.”

“Good, very good, have your papa say what time on Wednesday after work I can pick him up and we can discuss over diner. OK Juan.”

“Si Patron.”

“Very important Juan, Do not forget.”

“I shall not Patron.”

“I shall remind him as we separate for the evening Patron.”

“Good, good ok the day is wasting, go with you, get to work.”

The boys were off at the trot. This time the pool and patio was quickly and properly done.  Juan went about his tasks. Tomas sought out the Patron.

The Patron’s low back was of concern it was bothering Patron since the end of last week. Tomas gave it special attention with the oils especially peppermint. The cooling sensation eased the pain. Tomas had read of low back pain in his papa’s books. He felt for a bulging disk, not finding that he figured a sciatica problem and went to the acupressure point associated with the ailment. Almost immediate relief was felt by the Patron.

Tomas you are a magician. I shall tell the world about your talent.”

“Patron all I want to do right now is administer what relief I may to you and play on my school basketball team. Juan says we need to win the national championship. I would love to do that. You said you can help; for that I shall be most grateful.”

“Right you are my boy. To do so would give this sleepy little town much energy, a new life. Imagine the excitement as you win game after game. The town will be more alive than it has ever been. Think of it Tomas. We shall start training right after lunch.”

Tomas finished with his treatment of the Patron and went to see Juan. He had been doing all his work at the trot; wanting to make perhaps small but very strong legs stronger.

Patron went to ready the lunch meal. Today he had an array of fish as well as green salad. He also had energy and weight supplements to help add a little more muscle

to the boys thin frames.

The boys hungry after their chores quickly ate the lunch with the added supplements and were anxious to start the training of the Patron.

“What shall you teach us Patron?’ the ever inquisitive Juan asked.

“Well for starters, Juan you need to learn to dribble lower even down to ankle height, then we have to get you to have more agility, you have to train to jump higher, you have to have pin point passing ability, and the ability to pass behind your back, you have to learn to study your opponent and recognize their tells to steal the ball, defensively you have to learn to defend with your feet and your position plus how to fight through screens, we have to increase your amazing stamina and endurance, you have to learn to get your shoot off faster and how to do so by dribbling left or right, you have to learn how to drive through traffic, you have to become stronger; probably a couple more that I forgot.

“Wow, I will be super runt; what about Tomas.”

“Some of the same regarding agility, jumping, stamina and endurance. He will need to add a baby jump hook shot as well as a fall away jump shot. He will still need passing skills but beyond that more catching and shooting skills; one of the best plays is the alley opp where Juan would pass to about a foot from the basket and Tomas will catch and lay it in, in one motion, another one is the fast break trailer play, defense blocking out and rebounding, he also needs to be able to study his opponent and look for tells on offense as well as defense. So want to get started?”

“Patron, Tomas will be super giant; you ready my giant.”

“Come on super runt”

So the training began, day after day, drill after, repletion followed by more repetition. Soon Juan was looking away from Tomas but throwing an ally opp pass as he did. Trot sprint, trot sprint drills were done until their sides ached, Juan on three point shots learned to move left or right before shooting, Tomas learned the jump hook and fall away jump shot, Juan would race dribbling the ball from defensive foul line to a layup on offense, Tomas would race behind and when Patron yelled trailer pass the ball to Tomas to lay it in. All summer long on Saturday & Sundays Jose, Carlos and Eduardo would play as well trying to steal from Juan or defend against Tomas. They played scrimmage games as well. Always after if no ladies were present, skinny dipping in the pool.

Juan told his papa the Patron’s message and the following night Patron picked Francisco up in his little Tesla Roadster.

Patron picked a quite restaurant to have his meeting.

“Francisco, may I ask what is your weekly wag?”

“400 euro Patron.”

“Well when you start in business you shall have a 600 euro weekly salary. I can easily afford that.. plus you will get 25% of the profit unit my investment is paid back. Understand, I am prepared to carry the business for a year and that is to include your salary. I will get 75% of the profit to pay back my investment. After the investment is paid back we shall split the profit 50% each or I shall take less as I lessen my involvement. I will place advertisements for you to get opportunities to gain work. Together, we shall estimate the projects. Does that sound fair? ”

“Oh most generous Patron, Eduardo can only work the summer and weekends but I would like his help.”

“Yes of course, shall we bring Eduardo on with the first project? How much does he make now?”

“He makes 200 euro, Patron.”

“Then we shall pay him 300 euro for a week’s work – of course it would have to be less when he is in school and cannot work the full week. I think you can call on Jose and Carlos in the same fashion. If you need and want them; they are good little workers and their family can use the money. ”

“Now what types of construction can you do, besides basketball courts?”

“Just about anything in masonry or carpentry, I can do plumbing as well but am not licensed the same for electricity I am not licensed.”

“How about landscaping?”

“Oh Si Patron, to landscape is to dig and to cut, very easy with a good garden supply behind you and I have such a connection.”

“Can you do drywall and framing?”

“Si Patron, and cabinets and doors and windows often I install these items.”

“Very good I have plenty to do an advertisement.”

“How do you think we should charge the customers, flat rate or time and material?”

“In the beginning, Patron I think time and material. We will for sure cover our expenses and the customer will know better exactly where their money will go. I think more fair, for both sides. Possibly, after we establish ourselves we can look to flat rate proposals. ”

“Fine, I agree.”

“One other thing Patron, I have thought of, I think I and my men should always be at the trot. People like it when they see workers hurrying to complete a task. Especially if they are paying time and material; I also think we should quote a bit high and then lessen the price should we be able if it takes less time. Word will spread that we brought the job in under budget. Advertisement may be necessary to start but word of a good job well done brought in under budget will gain us more and better customers.”

“Excellent Francisco, I like the way you think. I agree 100%.”

“Now as to the truck that is something you must take care of. I shall come and sign off on the papers but you need to be satisfied that you got the vehicle that you will need. You can look to lease the truck which would keep the cost down and give us more of a tax write off. You can use my garage for tool storage until we can rent a proper place as well as use any tools I have like my ladders, wheel barrows, whatever.”

“Excellent, Patron I should inventory what you have then and tag it. As far as the truck I know little about taxes and such if you think it better to lease. Then lease it shall be.”

“What shall we call our company?”

“I do not know Patron, I shall ask Rosa if I may, she named all our children and I think a good job.”

“Please do get her input. Is there anything else we should discuss?”

“I cannot think of anything now I image other points will come up when we are in it. I know you are a fair and honest man, a better partner I could not have in an endeavor like this. I hope you think of me in the same way; so I am sure any future issue that might arise we will handle.”

“I agree, Francisco I have exactly the same trust in you. So the last thing we need to get started is the company name.”

“I think it is important, it should reflect who we are.”

“Yes my friend.” The Patron extended his hand. Francisco took it in a firm shake. “Will you give notice to your employer?”

“Oh yes Patron I think that is the right way to be in business.”

“Francisco, I just thought of something.”

“Patron?”

“When you have your new truck and are in business for yourself you can arrange your time to drive Theresa to see Tomas for exercises.”

“Yes Patron, I would be able to do that wouldn’t I. Excellent thought Patron.”

If there was any doubt to go ahead with the new venture before for Francisco, the Patron blew that out of the water with his suggestion that Francisco drive Theresa.

Rosa came up with the name of F&P Construction Done Right. Patron made up the advertisement. Francisco gave notice at his job as did Eduardo. F&P Construction was born. Unbelievably almost immediately the Patron got a response for a half court basketball court. All they had to do was cut the cost of the materials in half for the work they did for the Patron. Juan and Tomas stayed working for the Patron and training for basketball. But, Jose, Carlos and Eduardo all were able to work with Francisco. Francisco had his nice big van truck and drove Theresa for exercises every day.

All that the Patron had said that needed to be learned by Juan and Tomas was learned. Their dedication to winning a national title and their amazing work ethic made them exceptional basketball players. They were able to communicate without a word with just a glance on many of their plays.

Through June, July, August, and September they worked and practiced and had their excitement. F&P Construction was getting job after job, as they did their reputation for fine work at a fair price was recognized by all their customers and they of course told their friends. Life was good for the little group. Rosa got her washing machine in July. Papa picked it up with the help of all the boys in his new truck.

It was October and team tryouts were held. Juan made the team as the backup point guard. The coach thought he was just too small to play against the larger boys in their league. He also had a little family affair going. The starting point guard Miguel Garcia, from last year was bigger and his brother’s son. So of course he favored his nephew. During practice Juan played with the 2nd team and Tomas with the starters. Juan kept stealing the ball on defense from Miguel in the scrimmages and scored at will on him on offense. When he scored he was yelled at by the coach saying “Your job De Silva is to get the ball to the bigger guys for them to score from in close.” On defense when he stole the ball he was yelled at for not letting the play be run saying,” De Silva you can only do that because you know the play Miguel is running.” Never the less Juan kept his head in the game and his competitive spirit alive. If anything the coach only made him want all the more to be the starter because he and everyone else could see he was better than Miguel. Finally as the start of the season grew near Miguel went to his uncle.

“Uncle, I think I shall quit the team. All the players are mad at me because you put me in front of De Silva as a starter. Everyone can see he is much better than me; everyone but you. I want to play and win and be part of the team. I know I am good at point guard; just good…Juan is great, awesome and never says a bad word to me or to you. You are not doing what is right for the team by keeping me as the starter.”

“Nonsense, Miguel, they will see, they all will see he is too small. In a real game against the best competition he will be nothing. I need you; stay on the team and do what I tell you. I don’t want to speak to my brother of this. You will do fine.”

So Miguel stayed on the team he told Juan, “I went to my uncle but could not change his mind. I am to stay on the team and do as he says or he is to talk to my papa. I do not want such a talk Juan.”

“You are a good friend Miguel; I believe we both shall be needed on the team even if your uncle does not think it.”

Juan and Tomas continued to excel during the exercise portion of practice. On the wind sprints while others tired after 10 repetitions Juan and Tomas were not breathing hard. Coach praised Tomas but nothing to Juan. Even when Juan beat Tomas continuously in the drill. He flat out refused to recognize Juan because he was a threat to his nephew’s position.

The first game was against Lisbon the most powerful team in the country and the national champions 3 years in a row. Little Portimao, kept the game close. Tomas was a demon on the inside scoring on jump hooks, fall away jump shots and lay ins. Exactly what the Patron had worked with him on during the summer. By midway of the 3rd quarter Portimao was down by 10 points and although they played hard the game was slipping away from them. Miguel said to Tomas,

“We have to get Juan into the game. With him playing I think we can beat these guys.”

“There is only one way my friend.”

“What, what Tomas?”

“You might have to get hurt. Then your uncle has no choice but to use Juan.”

“Of course I see. I shall make it happen and try not to make it obvious.”

One the next play after a scramble for the ball, Miguel went down and grabbed onto his knee. The referee called time as Miguel moaned on the floor holding his knee Coach Garcia came jogging onto the floor.

“Miguel, Miguel what happened?”

“Uncle I twisted it badly, it hurts uncle. I don’t think I can play anymore put Juan in for me please.”

The coach had no other option. “De Silva go in for Miguel.”

Juan came jogging onto the court as he passed Miguel he thought he saw a little wink and a sly smile. Coach helped Miguel off the floor.

“Ice please coach.”

Coach got some ice for Miguel.

Lisbon had the ball. Juan had been studying their point guard from the bench. When he started to run a play where he would pass, he would dribble in his left hand and rub the sweat off his face with his right hand. If he was to shoot he would dribble with his right hand. Juan was right in his face as he came up court, there it was the left hand dribble Juan stole the ball and raced down for a layup. The Lisbon guard after him but too late; Juan scored. Again Lisbon came up court, this time Juan ran right into a screen. The Lisbon point guard was free for a 3 pointer but missed. Tomas had the rebound. Now with Juan in the game he had renewed energy. He passed to Juan and raced down court to the basket. Juan dribbling was a bit slower. Tomas nodded his head and Juan put the ball a foot off the basket Tomas went up got it and layed it in for another basket.

The buzzer for the end of the 3rd quarter sounded. Portimao had cut the lead to 6.

The 4th quarter started, coach Garcia, had called for a zone press.  Lisbon inbounded their point guard got it headed up court but at half court was met by Juan and Hector. He had to stop his dribble Juan quickly grabbed the ball. The whistle sounded the referee called held ball, and a jump ball was to be held at the half court circle. The Lisbon guard was 175 CM all muscle, Juan was 167 CM and lean. The ref threw the ball up, faster than lightening Juan was in the air and tapped to Tomas. Tomas passed back to Juan. Juan took off down court 2 Lisbon players were closing in. He kept going to the basket just before he was to go out of bounds he heard what he was waiting for. Tomas yelled “TRAILER” Juan flipped the ball over his shoulder and Tomas caught and made the layup. Now little Portimao was only down 4 points.  The Lisbon coach called time out.

“Hey guys this game is not over; you think it is won. Go ask their little point guard. He thinks he is gonna win. I don’t know why he didn’t start. You guys get your head in the game.  Now let’s tighten up on defense, protect the ball and score some baskets. Try the back door play. Double team their big guy. He has all their points.”

The Lisbon point guard said, “Hey, coach I need some help shaking that runt. I swear he is reading my mind. He is where I want to go before I get there. He may be small but damn he is quick”

“Ok Sergio you set some screens for Diego.”

The buzzer sounded Lisbon came down court Juan was screened out of the play Lisbon scored on the back door play.

Now Lisbon by 6, Juan came up court; Tomas was double teamed he gave the signal for the ally opp. Tomas shook it off. Juan picked up his pace dribbled left – then reversed and dribble right Diego was chasing him but losing; Juan kept looking for someone to get open. There was no one except him. Up went his 3 point shot swish.

Now Lisbon by 3; it went back and forth like two fighters. Another 3 by Juan tied the game, the crowd was on their feet screaming for their Portimao boys. A minute left, Lisbon came up court, a pass to Sergio and a lay in and now Lisbon was up by 2 with 20 seconds left.

“TIME OUT, TIMEOUT” coach Garcia yelled. He set up a play where Juan would pass to Hector & he would pass to Tomas. Juan said “coach there is little time and they will double team Tomas. Something else please coach.”

“Do what I say De Silva.”

With that the buzzer sounded the timeout was over. Juan brought the ball up court. Hector’s defender was playing hard defense and Hector was not able to get into position to get the pass. Juan looked to Tomas who was guarded by the point guard in front and big tall Sergio behind. Tomas ran across the key to get free, then, tried going around in circles to get free; nothing they were on him like glue. Time was running out Juan had no option but to shoot another 3 pointer. As the ball went up coach Garcia yelled, “De Silva what are you….”

SWISH every one cheered. Juan put his hands up in victory; Tomas and the whole team came running towards him, Tomas hoisted him on his shoulders. He ran around the whole gym that way; the rest of the team pounding him on his back including Miguel. “I KNEW YOU COULD DO IT JUAN… I JUST KNEW IT”

Tomas was yelling “JUAN WE DID IT, WE DID IT, WE BEAT THEM.”

Lisbon lined up for the end of game hand shake. Portimao calmed down and did the same. They all shook hands the Lisbon coach came over to Juan and Tomas.

“You boys are quite a team; you both are outstanding players, I suspect some day you will be on the national team. I hate losing but there is no shame in losing to you. I think it may be different next time, we will see.”

Diego the Lisbon point guard came over to Juan, “I don’t know what you got man; how did you steal from me so often?”

Juan shook hands and said, “Just luck maybe or maybe I shall not tell your tell. Good luck you are a good player.”

“Thanks and good luck to you maybe we shall play again.”

Diego kept repeating “I shall not tell your tell.”  What does it mean?

Coach called the team together, “Good game boys, well played, Tomas you were great today. All of you were good. Juan nice shot at the end although I think it was more luck then skill. Next time I tell you to pass. Pass the ball damn it.”

Tomas, Miguel the whole team yelled “You are wrong coach, he can make that shot like we make lay ups.”

Tomas said “I played one on one with him all summer. I could not beat him I don’t think anyone on the team can beat him, even you coach.”

“REALLY, TOMAS, REALLY….LOOK AT HIM HE IS A RUNT.”

Juan said, “Shall we play coach?”

“Yes we shall, then, we will have no more of this. Miguel will be the point guard. I will be the coach and you De Silva will be on the bench never to play. Or maybe you should just quit. One lucky game does not make a season.”

Miguel said, “If you do that I shall not play. I shall not play for you…. You are a bad coach who does not care to win for the team but your own glory.”

“I too shall be with Miguel” Tomas added.

“Me too, me too, me too” came the replies of all the team.

Juan again, in a quite but forceful voice, “Shall we play now my coach?”

“No, no I shall not take advantage. You just played and must be tired.”

“I am not tired coach. I was never breathing hard but perhaps you should rest for tomorrow?”

That was it; they would play at practice tomorrow.

The Patron was there to watch the game and almost thought that he should interfere with Coach Garcia. He understood the dynamics at play. To protect his nephew who was a fair minded boy, he thought he had to belittle Juan who was a superior player. Always politics are at play he thought. The Patron was to give Juan and Tomas a ride home after the game.

“Juan do you want me to talk to your coach before this situation escalates?”

“Obrigado Patron, it should not be necessary after I beat him tomorrow. If he then cannot do what is right for the team perhaps you could talk but let us play our game.”

“He is much bigger and stronger Juan, and he played on the national team; how will you beat him?”

“I shall need an honest referee to make sure he does not try to make it a fight and not a basketball game with rules. Tomas will you do this?”

“Of course, Juan”

“Then it is his bulk and hulk that he has to carry around until he gets tired and I know I can run him around in circles. I shall not miss from 3 point and make him come and get me. I shall be respectful but I shall goad him into playing more and more outside on defense. It shall be an even game for a while as I study looking for his tell. When I find it, I shall wait to use it until I get him to say I shall be the point guard so everyone can hear. You shall see Patron, you have taught me well. Did not David slew Goliath?”

The Patron laughed, “Tomas I fear we have developed a demon in basketball clothes.”

“Si Patron, for sure I was not able to beat him.”

The next day the talk was all over the little Portimao high school, how they beat Lisbon and the great game by Juan and Tomas. It was also all over the school about the unfair treatment of Juan by the coach. Miguel, hated going against his blood but what is ….is and he would not deny it. The word of the one on one game between Juan and coach was also spread all over school. In many ways, Juan had nothing to lose. The coach on the other hand would lose much of his standing.

The Portimao gym was crowded for the game. The coach although respected for being on the national team was not really well liked.

“Ready De Silva?”

“Always my coach. I think the winner must win by 2 baskets my coach is this fair.

“Yes De Silva”

“I think we should have a referee though. Just someone to insure you do not unfairly take advantage of your size. Do you object to Tomas?”

“Sure Tomas can referee, this won’t take long.”

“Would you like the ball first my coach?”

“No go ahead De Silva”

Coach was almost under basket Juan was a few meters beyond the 3 point line.

“You ready my coach.”

“Yes play De Silva”

“Do you not want to guard me my coach?”

“De Silva start the game!!!”

From where he was standing Juan took his jump shot. SWISH

“Your ball my coach”

It played just as Juan had predicted. He had to goad the coach to come out and play him. All the while on defense while they were trading baskets Juan was studying the coach what was his tell. The coach was backing again on Juan, he turned and scored.

“Ahha,”was heard from Juan.

The score was 20 to 20 the coach was showing a bit of fatigue.

Juan, asked, “Are you tired my coach, do you need a time out?”

The coach breathing a little heavy said, “No De Silva maybe you do.”

“No my coach not me I would prefer a full court game. It would be easier to tire you out.”

The game wore on 3 pointers by Juan back in close shots by coach. At 25 to 25 Juan said.

“Come on coach you said I was too small can you not guard the 3 point line. If we were counting points and not baskets I would be up by 25 points.”

The coach took the bait and Juan ran him all over the 3 point line. Juan dribbled to the left corner, “Shall I shoot from here coach? Then to the right corner, “Perhaps from here my coach? Can you not block my shot coach after all I am so small?”

Juan was carving him just as he said he would at 32 to 32 the coach was now laboring. Juan said in a loud voice for all to hear,

“My coach if I should let you win will you let me be the point guard. I promised my Patron, I shall win the National Championship for him and all of Portimao. I cannot do this if I am not on the court. So I shall lose to you and you shall retain your respect but I shall be the point guard.”

In a loud voice gasping for air said, “You shall not be the point guard because you cannot win.”

“But if I win my coach will you have me as your point guard?”

“If you win but you will not.” The coach now barely whispered.

“Say that louder my coach … if I win I shall be the point guard”

“Yes De Silva if you win, but you can’t. You are too small.”

Juan hit another 3 he was up by 1 at 33 to 32. The coached backed in again; left hand he bounces the ball, 2 dribbles. He goes to switch to his right hand and faster than superman Juan slaps the ball away. Juan quickly retrieves the ball but rather than shot. He gives the ball to coach.

“Here coach they say in church it is not nice to steal.”

The coach now fuming backing into the basket again 2 dribbles on his left hand and Juan slaps the ball away again.

“Sorry coach sometimes I cannot help myself with the stealing.” Juan again gives the coach the ball.

The coach now confused does not know what to do; the back in move worked all though the game but he would not be embarrassed again. He jumped up without a dribble from mid range but it clanged off the back of the basket. Juan quickly ran down the ball and out to the 3 point line.

“Coach you must defend if I score you lose.”

The coach summoned all his remaining strength and ran to defend Juan. Juan dribbled down low all around the about to be beaten man.

Juan said, “Size is not the only thing that matters my coach. Quickness, agility, stamina, the ability to shoot and pass…these also count do you not agree?”

He dribbled round and round the beaten coach; the coach, failing at the ball. Finally, as an act of mercy Juan said,” I shall end this now my coach; remember what you said all here can remind you should you forget.” He dribbled away from the coach and made a layup. The score was 34 baskets to 32 baskets. Juan made 33 - 3 points shots in a row. Juan ran around and around the gym arms raised. All the students chanted JUAN, JUAN, JUAN!!!

The coach had collapsed at the foul line. The principal came to help him up. He half carried more guided coach Garcia back to his office.

“I think you should let that boy play, Garcia, he certainly has some skills.”

“I don’t believe he was able to do that to me. I think he could have ended it after 25 baskets. I heard him say ahh at some point rather early on. I bet it was then he knew he could steal the ball.”

“I think, I should go with you for a team meeting. You’ll have to apologize of course for your behavior. You were not fair to De Silva and the whole team knew it including your nephew.”

“Yes, of course, senior, I have lost their confidence and need to earn it back.”

The next day before practice Principal Gomez told the boys there would be a team meeting.

Principal Gomez started, “Boys I again want to congratulate you on your tremendous win over Lisbon. You know that was the first time in the last 40 years that we beat them Excellent, just an excellent start to the season. All of Portimao is very proud of you. I know there has been some discord in regards to the starting point guard. I think Juan De Silva answered that yesterday. The question is how do we go forward now? I see a very good but a fractured team. I know Coach Garcia to be a good man; a very experienced basketball man and I think we need him to go forward. But I do not play for him; I did not witness the problems. I think it is for you to decide if he is to be your coach or if not then who? Before you decide I think we should hear from coach.”

With that the coach stepped in front of the group. “I am sorry, I am sorry, Juan I saw your skills, the way you worked with the team. I wanted my nephew to carry the Garcia name to the University. It was selfish and not in the best interests of the team. I know I have let all of you down by not putting the team first. I have been shamed and I deserved it. I have been taught humility by a runt in stature but wow, a super runt. I was tempted to go against all what good sportsmanship is about and I succumbed to it. I apologize to all of you but mostly Juan De Siva. Juan you said nothing, you rose above my stupidity for the good of the team and you helped give Portamao the biggest win in my life time. That said, I will leave you to decide how to go forward with Principal Gomez.”

“Boys I think we should talk this out a bit and then have a vote. Who would like to say something?”

Miguel stood up, “I know he is my uncle and my blood and I am not sure if I am being completely fair minded. He has embarrassed me and the Garcia name. For that reason I think we should find another coach. Juan and Tomas trained with their Patron all summer, he has elevated them to be exception players. I am ashamed to say my uncle has not done this.”

“Wow,” Tomas said, “I would not have expected you to say that. Patron is excellent but he is older. I don’t know if he would consider taking on the team all by himself. You can’t offer him money he has more than he can spend in his lifetime. But I agree we all could use his help if we do as Juan says we are to do… win the National Championship.

Juan got up, “Coach I think has learned a lesson. He is not that much older than us and who here has not needed a second chance in their lives. It is because we are young that we make mistakes, I guess it is the nature of things. I think we should ask Patron to help the team in any way he can and to guide coach to be a better coach, the best coach the Portamao team has ever had.

Hector got up and said, “I agree with Juan. If he can forgive coach then we all should be able to.”

Miguel said, “I think my uncle needs to understand that whatever the Patron says is what goes. I went to him early when I saw Juan deserved to start over me. He was not understanding and without any good argument other than I was his nephew. In many ways he is a good man. Obviously he wants what is best for his family and that is not really a bad thing. However, he gets a little power crazy about basketball and does not listen to reason. I am glad that most of you especially you Juan, are willing to give him a second chance. He does love basketball and is devoted to it.”

Principal Gomez said, “I think I am hearing you right, coach can stay the coach, but Juan and Tomas’s Patron is to oversee in any way he wants.”

They all said “Si Principal”

“Juan, Tomas will you see your Patron and relay a message that I would like to see him at his earliest conveyance.”

It was explained to coach Garcia. He was happy to have his job; he was not happy about the Patron but did not protest.

The Patron stopped by the school and met with Principal Gomez. He agreed to help with the team more in the background. He asked that they together meet with Coach Garcia to explain his role. The meeting was held in Principal Gomez’s office.  He said he would attend practices and observe from the stands. He would meet with Coach Garcia probably briefly after each practice to discuss it and the team. He asked that Coach Garcia scout the next team on the schedule a week in advance and together they would discuss a strategy to win against them. He said he would not be sitting on the bench during games but if he had a suggestion he would find a way to inform him. He asked that once a week that the team would have a practice with him at his villa and if no game on Saturday have a voluntary practice also at his villa. I shall try hard not to interfere or in any way usurp Coach Garcia’s authority. However if something was happening that I felt it was for the good of the team I would step in. Coach Garcia for his part couldn’t have had a better arrangement. As the season worn on he came to value the Patron’s insight and wisdom. The team enjoyed the practices at the Patron’s villa and especially the food afterward. Although the Saturday was completely voluntary none ever missed. If the weather permitted with a hot afternoon after practice Juan would ask skinny dipping and 10 naked boys were in the Patron’s pool. Patron brought out towels for them to dry. The boys after the swimming would lounge in the towel often there was a bit of a prank when one took the towel from another but all in good fun. The team grew together as not just a team but as a group that cared for each other. They increased their endurance, strength, stamina, agility and worked on their shooting and their defense under the ever watchful but gentle eye of the Patron. He never yelled but just offered suggestions as to how they could do better. Just as Juan and Tomas loved him they all did in their own way and always upon leaving would offer obrigado Patron, obrigado.

Juan and Tomas of course stayed after to clean up the food and plates that the Patron had provided. They had two needs. First their commitment to Patron demanded them to help clean and clean properly but also it gave them an opportunity to ease their excitement. From daily love making to almost nothing to now twice a week was surely needed by the two young lovers.

After one Saturday practice in October, during the swimming Miguel noticed how Juan and Tomas were always together more than the other boys. In doing the flipping game he noticed how Tomas became most excited. (Juan was teasing him with his tongue as he stood on his clasped hands.)

As the team was leaving Miguel asked, “Can I help with the clean up as well?”

“Miguel, that is very good of you but you see it is my job, as house boy for the Patron.” Juan answered.

“So why does Tomas stay?”

Tomas said, “I too work for the Patron and since we are friends, I also help.”

“So let me help, I can clean.”

Juan and Tomas had no real excuse to not let Miguel help. They cleaned the pool area; wiped off the tables and chair and properly positioned them. Cleaned the food serving area and took the plates and platter to the kitchen. During the course of the clean up Miguel dropped his towel.

“Ohh, do you mind I kind of like being naked.”

“That’s ok Miguel we do too” Juan replied, as he let his towel fall; “they really need to be washed with the others.”

Tomas did the same.

“Please don’t take offense, but I am wondering if you guys are boyfriends or something?”

Juan looked at Tomas who looked back at Juan. Nothing was said for a good few seconds.

Juan answered, “Why do you ask that?”

“Well you are always together, a lot of time you are looking ga ga at each other. I never see you with girls. Juan you call Tomas “My Giant” and Tomas you call Juan, “My Runt. Such names as these tell of a closeness beyond regular friendship.”

Tomas said, “Since you asked directly. I shall answer the same way. We do not try to hide that we are boyfriends but neither do we advertise it. After all being gay, can kind of be a hard thing in school. Since you asked we are boyfriends and I love Juan very much and I would be very upset if anyone hurt him.”

“Oh I would never do that and I will not say anything but support of you if it were to come out…..Ahh I have not said this to any other person… It’s a little hard (Miguel had tears in his eyes)  bbbut I pray you will understand. I ttt think I have a lot of the same fffeelings. As hard as I try; I do not find the prettiest, sexiest girl can give me excitement. I dream of cute boys all the time and I like to day dream about kissing them and more.”

Juan smiled and looked to Tomas again and went over to Miguel and hugged him. Tomas did the same. All three shared their excitement rubbing on each other. Juan said, “I think it is obvious you are part of the all boys team. Should we help him to release my giant?”

“If he would permit, but it should be a special one, time thing. I do not think I can share you with another on a regular basis. We can all be good, really good friends but for our love to stay we cannot be with others.”

Juan pulled Tomas down so he could kiss him. “I love you, Tomas.”

“I do not mean to come between the two of you. I am sorry. I just needed to say to someone what I have been feeling. I need to be honest and true to myself with someone.”

Tomas said, “I think we can have a special one thing welcome to the all boys club, Miguel. I think you are cute and sexy. What say you Juan?”

Miguel blushed.

“I think he is very cute Tomas. I think I shall kiss him.”

“Yes Juan, do it let us see what you can do to his excitement.”

Juan grabbed Miguel’s head and gave him a little peck. Miguel, had his stomach flip flopping, he was all nervous but wanted it so bad. Juan kissed him again, another peck. Miguel so wanted more. He pulled Juan to him. Their bare bodies touching their chests, there members were rubbing. Juan kissed him deep, his tongue probed his mouth. Miguel’s member started to leak. Juan said, “Tomas take us, my giant”

Big strong Tomas put Juan over his shoulder; then surprised Miguel as he picked him up as well. They left for their excitement bedroom. He passed the Patron.

“Ahh Tomas are you cleaning up. What shall you do with these boys?”

“I shall have them love my largeness, Patron.”

“Good, good for you.”

Into the bedroom, dropping them on the bed. “Miguel should you like to a taste of excitement.”

Miguel fell to his knees, “Yes, Tomas, I have dreamt of it, I crave it so Tomas. Please leave me to taste it.”

Tomas waved his member and slapped Miguel’s face with it. Miguel had his mouth open wanting to catch it. His tongue was out wanting to lick it.

“Grab it Miguel, grab it, show him you want it. ” Juan whispered in Miguel’s ear.

Miguel did, he took hold of the big member and licked it, then kissed it; he put it to his cheek and tried to hug Tomas’s excitement. He kissed it again, then licked the head.

He looked up to Tomas who said, “Go ahead suck it, make love to it.”

Miguel took it in his mouth, he loved giving Tomas pleasure; he twirled his tongue around it. Meanwhile, Juan was licking Miguel’s member, then he kissed it before taking it into his mouth. Miguel was sucking for all he was worth,

Tomas was groaning. “YEAH, SUCK IT BOY. LIKE MY EXCITEMENT MIGUEL.”

Miguel bobbed his head. Juan wanted Miguel’s cream bad. He took his member out of his mouth and jerked it and licked it and then back in. Miguel was learning from Juan. He did the same to Tomas. Miguel was moaning with Tomas’s member in his mouth. Juan felt the head on Miguel’s member expand even bigger. His cream was boiling up from inside him. He was going crazy trying to keep on Tomas’s excitement.

“OHH JUAN, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME, OHH, OOH”

Tomas was turned on by Miguel, although his member was out of Miguel’s mouth Miguel kept pumping it and licking it.

 “MIGUEL TAKE MY CREAM.”

He shot all over Miguel’s face and in his mouth. Miguel shot his love cream all over Juan’s face and Juan quickly gobbled it up. Tomas collapsed on Juan and Miguel. The three boys lay in a heap on the excitement bed. Of course Juan still had quite a bit of excitement. Miguel realized how much pleasure Juan gave him.

“Juan, you didn’t have release yet, can I help you. You and Tomas have given me such great joy; I really want to help you.”

As he said this he licked Juan’s member. “MMM good different from Tomas, more sweet I think.”

He licked again Juan moaned. “Tomas, Juan has not had release. Do you want to help me? I’m sure you know how to give him more pleasure than I.”

Together they straddled Juan, one on one side one on the other. They alternately licked his member. Tomas changed position and kissed Juan saying how he loved him. Miguel kept at his excitement wanting his cream. The two of them caressed Juan from head to toe. Licking, nibbling and sucking his boy nipples, his ears, his toes, his testacies, hands everywhere driving Juan into a frenzy of ecstasy. They nibbled and sucked on his low hanging baby makers. Juan was squirming for release, he needed release, Tomas said let us taste your cream Juan, Miguel so wanted Juan’s cream (he would not say it but he was the boy Miguel dreamed of every night). Their tongues kept licking Juan’s member over and over they kept saying. “’

LET US HAVE YOUR CREAM, JUAN, GIVE US YOUR CREAM”

Juan’s member twitched, he yelled out AIYEI YES, OHH YES, AHH OHH YES,

He shot up to his eyes in his hair; he kept shooting blast after blast. Miguel went to gobble it up. It just kept coming out. It was the most glorious release of his young life. Tomas kissed and held him. Miguel laid next to him with his head on Juan’s chest. Tomas changed position and laid next to Juan.

Miguel looked to Tomas, “May I kiss him too. Just once then I shall never again; this was too much, please Tomas.”

Tomas nodded as he cuddled close to Juan. Miguel gave the now drowsy Juan a peck, then another and another as Juan returned them Miguel held his head and kissed him deep their tongues dueling and exploring each other’s mouth. Then Miguel snuggled close to Juan as well. The three spent boys dozed a bit. The Patron came to the door and looked in. It was a beautiful sight for him. He loved boys, especially boys that loved boys. He took in the sight of their golden brown skinned naked bodies and inhaled the scent of their spent love cream. He let his eyes feast on the sight and took another deep breath and another.

Finally in resignation he announced in a loud voice, “Am I to have overnight guests tonight my young ones.”

Juan stirred, looked at his Patron, smiling down at him, “Patron it would be a great pleasure if you would allow it someday. I fear it should not be tonight. Alas, we are expected home.” Juan roused his naked lovers.

They quietly dressed. Juan said, “I will be here tomorrow to complete my chores after church if you permit?’

Tomas added, “I too my Patron, I owe you many massages.”

“OK after church, I’ll see you tomorrow boys.” They hugged and kissed the Patron. Miguel shyly approached.

“Of course come here Miguel and give the old Patron a hug.”

Miguel had a quizzical look; but went to the Patron.

“Ohh, you do not know, of course Juan or Tomas would not reveal, I too am gay my boy and I know what you think. No you boys are way too young. I shall not ruin your loving by having this old man take advantage of you. But I shall be here should you have need of my experience or consul. ”

Miguel hugged and kissed the Patron as the others had done. He was so grateful that he had found the courage to ask of being boyfriends.

Miguel was a changed boy. Whether he wanted it or not he now realized he was gay. Juan and Tomas explained to him as the Patron explained to them a few short months earlier. He was as God created him and God did not make mistakes nor could he commit a sin. No matter what they would be his best friends, they just could not jeopardize the love they felt for each other to be lovers with him.

“You too will find someone to love you just the way you are.”

Miguel thanked them he was in awe of the loving; it had been the most wonderful night of his life. He felt he had the courage to tell his parents and prayed they would be as understanding as Juan’s and Tomas’s.  For no matter he was who he was and could not change and wasn’t sure he would want to.

“I am who God intended me to be” rang in his ears and forever in his memory.

Fall turned to winter and would end with the National Championship Tournament in early spring. Little Portamao’s High School basketball team with Juan and Tomas leading the way and with the training of the Patron for the whole team came into the tournament undefeated. Never had Portamao ever achieved such a goal. Coach Garcia was regarded as a miracle worker by the press. He however was humble saying it was the drive and determination of the boys to train hard and prepare. He also said that there was a secret coach looking down, and over his shoulder to make sure he was doing right. The press questioned who the secret coach could be, but he would not betray the Patron.

The final game for the championship came down to Portamao against Lisbon. Patron had feared as much. As always he was in the stands for his boys to see and gain confidence from him. The game was played in Lisbon at the University Field House. It had a capacity on 10,000 people. Little Portamao sent a contingent of about 1000 people. Almost the whole town was there to support their boys. The rest of the arena was filled with the Lisbon fans.

The boys were in awe of their surroundings. Coach Garcia growing in insight,” Should we measure the baskets boys or do they seem to be regulation?”

“No coach they must be regulation” came the response.

Good, should we measure the court boys?”

“No coach.”

“Do not be in awe think of it as just the same as the Patron court where you had so much fun training. The crowd will be loud but close your ears to them. We beat this team in our first game and since we, you and I, mostly I have learned much from the Patron. We are better, stronger with more stamina, Juan taught me that.” They all laughed. “Did not David slew Goliath?”

“Yes coach”  “

So my Davids, you have some work to do. I believe you can do it. Do you?’

“Yes coach”

During warm ups Miguel said to Juan, “Look at them Juan, one bigger than the next and there must be 25 of them.”

Juan turned to Miguel, “My friend it is good than that the rules say they can only play 5 at a time.”

Miguel laughed and at the same time marveled at the courage of his smaller friend.

The horn sounded and just as Juan had said only 5 Lisbon players came out to play.

The game started poorly for Portamao. The Lisbon coach recognizing Juan as the leader of the offense, doubled teamed him as soon as he came over half court; often trapping him with nowhere to pass or no way to shoot. Juan got a couple steals and Tomas had several baskets but the Lisbon strategy was working to perfection. Sadly by half time Lisbon had a 20 point lead and for all their courage and all their stamina it looked like Portamao was a sure loser.

The Patron, hurried down from the stands to confer with coach.

“We need Miguel to take the point; Juan to become a decoy or a 3 point shooter. Juan to bring the ball and pass to Miguel just before half court. Miguel to drive the key or pass to Tomas. On defense we must summon all our strength, zone press one time tough man to man the next. It doesn’t matter how much we score if we don’t stop them. Make it happen coach. The game is not over, the first 5 minutes of the second half and every minute after decides. Do you believe me coach?”

“Yes Patron.”

“Go then, make them believe. It can be done.”

Coach went into half time to talk with his team. “Are you tried?”

“NO COACH”

“Good neither am I. They hit us with something we did not expect but we are a team. We will change it up on them in the second half. Not because he is my nephew but because he is the backup point guard. Miguel will start the second half, Juan will be there to shoot the 3 point shot if he is free, otherwise if they continue to double team Juan. Miguel will take over the point. He will drive the key, shoot or pass to Tomas or Hector. I’m sorry Pablo you will have to sit. On defense we must shut them down; we shall alternate the zone press with man to man. I will use a code, a color for man to man and a number for the press. Keep your head in the game for the next time I give a color it will mean the press. Now this will confuse me, it may confuse you and hopefully it will sure as heck confuses them. Just so you boys know this is what the Patron told me. You have the strength the stamina, the endurance to out play, out hustle them. Juan says they are all a bunch of big oafs. Is this not right Juan?”

Juan smiled, “Yes coach.”

Patron says the first 5 minutes is crucial. You must play your best then and every minute after because you will win the first 5 minutes you will chip away at their lead. This is not over!! I believe in you. The Patron believes in you, all of Portamao believes on you. Do you believe my Davids?”

“YES COACH” resonated from the rafters.

The second half started with Portamao having the ball. Juan dribbled the ball up with Miguel on the other side of the court. Lisbon sent the double team but as he saw them coming he passed to Miguel who drove the lane when Tomas’s man went to stop him Miguel sent a nifty pass to Tomas for an easy lay in. Coach yelled “THREE, THREE”

Portamao caught Lisbon by surprise and Tomas intercepted a pass and quickly dribble to the basket for another lay in. Lisbon took the ball out again and the coach yelled, “RED, RED”. Portamao fell back to man to man; Juan had his eyes glued on Diego the Lisbon point guard. He made the same tell; dribbling twice on his left. Juan slapped the ball away. Miguel seeing the steal started sprinting down court; Juan passed to him but as he drove to the basket two of Lisbon’s bigger defenders were there. Then from behind he heard thundering, pounding steps; “TRAILER” was heard throughout the arena. Big bad Tomas was right behind Miguel a flip over his shoulder and another lay in by Tomas. The lead was now 14 points. The Lisbon coach called time out. The Portamao fans were standing and cheering.

“You thought this team was done, you thought they would fold up for you and quit. They may be small but they have heart and they have skills and there is no quit in them. I see that. I also I am sorry to say, I see they are better conditioned. Run your plays stay with the double team but fall off when he that runt boy does not have the ball. Diego with Sergio take the 3 point shot we have been working on. Let’s see if we can take some steam out of them.”

Lisbon brought the ball up Sergio screened off Juan at the 3 point line. Tomas felt he should stay in the key for the rebound. Without Juan to brother him Diego shot and made the 3 pointer. Lead now 17.

Again Juan brought the ball up again the pass to Miguel who drove but they fell off Juan.  Miguel seeing Juan all alone passed back another SWISH. Juan answered Diego. Coach yelled out , “BLUE, BLUE.” Lisbon thinking man to man relaxed and then the zone press was on them. Miguel stole the ball passed to a streaking Tomas which brought the entire Lisbon team on him; he turned and passed to Juan again left open. SWISH … The lead was now 11. The Lisbon coach called another time out.

Coach Garcia looked at the clock. It had taken 5 minutes. His team huddled around him.

“Look at the clock boys, five minutes; you cut their lead by 9 points”

The Lisbon coach “Ok boys just calm down, play our game. On every play expect the zone press. Do not let them surprise you. Make sure of your passes. Control the ball, no more double team; take your time, no mistakes. It is still our game to win.”

The game wore on for Portamao; Tomas was a beast grabbing rebound after rebound. Blocking the shot of any Lisbon player that ventured into the key for a lay in. Juan was running Diego all over the court on offense. By the end of the quarter Portamao trimmed another 2 points off the lead; now down to 9 on a Miguel steal and a lay in. But Sergio and Diego were gassed. The Lisbon coach knew he had to rest them and put in fresh second line players.

Coach Garcia seeing Lisbon had stopped the double team of Juan took at Miguel for Pablo who was a bigger better defender. “Great Job Miguel” He was congratulated by coach and the whole team.

Miguel went over to Juan and Tomas. “I shall kiss both of you in front of all these people when you win.”

Juan and Tomas looked at each other and then said what the heck and kissed him on each cheek.

“Hey what are you lover boys doing over there? We still have a game to win. Let me tell you. You have not fooled me or anyone on the team. So you are gay and great basketball players get you heads off your excitement and in the game.”

Juan and Tomas looked to each other and then to Miguel. They just shrugged. The team laughed and pounded them on their backs. But being accepted for who they really were gave them new energy. They had to prove that being gay was nothing more than who they loved.

The buzzer for the 4th and final quarter sounded. Juan and Tomas immediately saw the two second strings in for Sergio and Diego. And went to work by the middle of the quarter the lead was 4 points. Juan hit 2 – 3 pointers and Tomas a hook shot and a fade away was answered by 2 midrange jumpers by Lisbon. At an out of bounds play Lisbon sent in Diego and Sergio. Diego dribbled up the court but he was not 100% in the game coming off his rest. Juan saw the tell and stole the ball. Tomas was streaking down the court Juan passed to him. The entire Lisbon team raced after him. Juan followed at the 3 point line. Again Tomas turned and passed back to Juan. SWISH the lead was 1 point. The Portamao bench was jumping up and down.

The Lisbon coach used another time out. “OK Diego I don’t care what else happens out there. Where ever Juan goes you go with him do not give him another open 3 point shot. If we are to lose it will be because of him. Everyone else calm down play your game. The lead is still ours.”

The stands were going crazy. Lisbon kept clinging to their 1 point lead it. Neither team would blink Portamao kept the pressure on every time Lisbon scored Portamao answered. With a minute to go Lisbon’s Sergio was fouled by Hector. He made the first but missed the second. The lead was now 2 points, there was 15 seconds to go Coach Garcia called time out.

Juan looked to the stands, he yelled “Patron, come help us please Patron.”

He was joined by Tomas and Miguel and then the whole team including Coach Garcia.

The Patron hurried down out of the stands as fast as his old legs would carry him.

“What to do Patron, please tell us what to do.”

“Win the game my boys!! Win the game!!.”

But how Patron they pleaded.

“They are not wanting, Juan to beat them. See how no matter what Diego follows him. But Juan shall beat them or you will break your promise to me. Would you do that?”

“Oh no Patron I shall not miss.”

“OK then Juan you are here on the right side. Miguel you shall pass into Hector also on the right side. Tomas you will be on the left side and come across the key to get a pass from Hector. When Tomas makes his move so should you Juan, you shall run to the left side of the 3 point line. Pablo will also be on the left side but come up to the center of the 3 point line and you Pablo shall win the game for us because you will set a pick that will free Juan. Juan you run so close to Pablo that you should kiss him.

They all laughed at the kiss. It relaxed them.

Tomas you turn and pass to Juan. Now if they do not defend you tie the game and we shall get them in overtime. It will be a very difficult pass because they are going to fall back on you. But I know you can do it. Juan, no matter what when you get the ball you shoot it and win the game. There will be no time for anything else. Now all of Portamao is very proud of you. When you win this game you will be undefeated and we shall have a big, big, party at my villa.”

The Lisbon coach, “They will fake to the Big guy Tomas; do not be afraid unless you foul he can only tie. The play will be to the runt for the win. Diego watch for the pick.”

The horn sounded they took their places…. Miguel slapped the ball and made his pass to Hector; Hector made his pass to Tomas, Juan raced to have Pablo pick off Diego. Diego ran around the back of Pablo and was on the other side waiting for Juan. Juan reversed and yelled, “Miguel screen.” Tomas seeing the change passed back to Miguel who handed to Juan who had 2 steps on Diego. Ball in his hands Juan could only shoot. Ball was up the whole arena fell silent. Juan ran to kiss the Patron. SWISH all of Portamao went crazy. Tomas came and kissed Juan and Miguel. All of Portamao was kissing each other. All the team was kissing each other. Coach Garcia kissed the Patron, “obrigado Patron, obrigado.” The Patron with tears in his eyes, “obrigado coach.”

The Lisbon coach gathered his team. “You are a great team. You lost 2 games all year by a total of 2 points. Unfortunately today in spite of everything we could think of those guys where just a little better, especially the little runt and the giant. Shake hands, congratulate them.”

In the locker room the coach and the Patron asked Juan how he knew to reverse the play.

“Ohh is easy decision no!! Only trouble waits on the other side of Pablo. And I know my giant no matter where I am he shall find me. Did he not do it?

They laughed the sweet laugh of victory. “Yes Juan, Tomas certainly did find you.”

“The Lisbon coach is very good…is it not so Patron.”

“Yes Juan very, he knew what we would do. I think before we did.

“He is a good man too Patron. I talked to him. Maybe I should introduce you. Diego said he does not have a family and no children. Patron, would it be wrong to invite the Lisbon team to our party? They were such good competition and good sports too I have great respect for them. Maybe we should call it a championship game party and not a celebration of winning.”

“I shall think on it Juan.”
