Chapter 33
The Goons Arrive

On Wednesday morning, Beau went out to run.  Only Father Wanamaker showed up so they took off.  They ran 10 miles and when they got back to Ben and Josh’s, Beau hugged Dale and went inside.

Everyone was ready for breakfast.  They had just sat down when the phone rang.  Jason answered and handed the phone to Beau.  “Hi Uncle Dan … They what? … You mean someone tried to enter all three houses but the alarms went off and the patrols caught the persons … Oh, all three Gleason children are in jail? … What? … You mean Mr. Rodman tried to set fire to his house? … I guess he has something in there he doesn’t want us to find.  … You know what Uncle Dan, I’m worried about Leroy. … Okay, I’ll be careful.”

Beau sat down and ate and went to get ready for work as Rebecca and Jason did the cleanup.  Everyone went their separate ways.  Beau insisted that Rebecca go with him to the Shoppe.  They were arranging the displays on the antique side.

Rebecca watched as Beau made several large sales.  Then the next customers came in Beau turned the people over to Rebecca.  She made a sale. And it was like her entire demeanor changed.  Her posture changed to reflect self confidence and there was a sparkle in her eyes.

At lunch time, the Weavers came in and the Coopers went home to have some lunch.  Beau and Rebecca walked to the Dairy Queen and had a sandwich and a shake.  They had just gotten back to the Shoppe when two well dressed big men came in.

Beau looked at them and said loud enough for the two men to hear, “Mr. Weaver would you please call Uncle Dan Crawford and Mr. O’Brien  and tell them that we need to have them come and pick up their merchandise so we can take care of all of the other things that are coming in.  Miss Wilson, you go into the office, and call your Grandmother Tillison and tell her that you will walk to your doctor’s appointment.”

Mr. Weaver and Becca left and made the calls as directed.  Beau went to the two men and said, “What can I show you gentlemen?  Are you interested in antiques or good used furniture?  We have plenty of both.”

“We ain’t interested in furniture.  We were told that you knew how we could collect the money for Mrs. Archibald Gleason’s gambling debts.  Either you pay or we will be breaking both of your legs and none of the people in the office will be leaving here intact.  Now we want to know where to find the broad and her husband and we want the information, now.”  the taller of the two goons said.

Beau approached the two hoods and said, “I am not related to the Gleason’s and I have no idea where they are.  I think Mr. Gleason might be in jail.  I have no money and the Gleason’s have no money.    They have lost everything and all of the money that they spent that wasn’t theirs.  I repeat that no one here is going to give you one red cent.  Now, I suggest that you hand me the weapons you have on you.  If you don’t, there at least eight Law Officers ready to do bodily harm to you.  Now hand me your weapons and get down on the floor and I mean now.”

The two goons looked around and saw four police persons at the front of the store and four deputies at the back of the store and did as they were told.   Beau said, “Chief O’Brien, I’m sure these two have police records that go half way across the United States.  Make sure you call the F.B.I. and let them know what is happening here.”

“Sheriff Crawford, find that creep Leroy Gleason.  He is the only one in that family who could have sent these people here, and besides I think he has been following us today.”  Beau turned to the two males and asked, “So how much did you pay him for the information to come here?” Beau asked.

“He was easy.  He was happy with the $2000.00.  Once our bosses hear about what happened, he’ll disappear from the planet for good.  He told us that you were controlling all of the money.”  The older of the two said.

Beau bent over laughing.  “That is really funny; I am in no way involved with the finances of Mrs. Gleason.  My only involvement is to see that she gets what is rightfully hers.”

Chief O’Brien said, “Okay, fun time is over.  Beau, these two will be out of commission for several days.  By the time they are released, you should be in D. C.”

“Thanks Chief, we have to get back to work.”  Beau said as the people cleared out.

Rebecca was watching Beau and said, “Mr. and Mr. Weaver, I think Beau is just about to go into total melt down.”

She had no more said that than Beau went down to the floor and was curled up like a ball shaking.  Dan was still there and he motioned everyone away and sat down and held Beau in his arms.  Beau started to relax and finally looked up at Dan.  “Thanks Uncle Dan.  I guess I was pretty stupid in how I handled those two enforcers.”

Dan pulled Beau close and said, “I agree that what you did was stupid, but at the same time you were thinking four or five steps ahead of them, and they didn’t know how to handle you.  There are not many people around who would have been able to do what you did.  Now come on I am taking you and Rebecca home.  I really think you need to be a teenager for at least two or three hours a day.”

“Uncle Dan, what’s a teenager?  I thought people didn’t like teenagers. Everyone says we are irresponsible.”

Dan laughed, “Benson, I think you are going to live.  Let’s go.”

Rebecca and Beau left, “See you tomorrow.”

They went to Ben and Josh’s house and they were told in no uncertain terms that they were not needed in the kitchen.  Carole Anne and Mrs. Gleason had everything under control.

Beau and Rebecca went and changed into their swimsuits and found the pool in use.  Dylan, Matt and Corky were the lifeguards.  They both dove and Beau swam until he was exhausted.  He climbed out and went into the lifeguard mode.

At 5:30 Beau closed the pool and everyone got ready for dinner.  After dinner, Beau asked his Dad to deliver Rebecca and him to our house for practice.    They picked up Berto and were joined by the rest of the teenagers. They practiced all of the songs that Jeff wanted them to sing.

Everyone was awed by Rebecca’s voice.  Jeff had Beau and Rebecca sing together and they were a beautiful match.  Everyone knew that something was up but had no idea what.  They finished the practice and Jeff, Tommy and I took those who needed rides home.

Beau went right upstairs to get ready for bed.  He took Clay and Jason with him.  They showered and were lying in Beau’s bed.  Beau was reading to the two guys.  There was a knock on the door.  Without thinking Beau said, “Come in.”

Rebecca went in and all three were lying there in their briefs.  Beau said, “Relax men. Becca has seen us in our swim suits so there are no surprises here.”

Becca crawled onto the bed and held Clay while Beau read the rest of the chapter.  Beau chased everyone out and curled up and went to sleep.

On Thursday morning, everything was normal except that Beau had a call from Dan.  “Hey Beau, just wanted to let you know that your two friends made bail.  They are not after you.  I have the feeling that they are petrified of you.  They are very intent on meeting up with Leroy again.”

Beau hung up and after the breakfast cleanup, Beau had his Dad take them to the Antique Shoppe.  They worked hard all day.   Berto and Matthew were working with them.  They all made sales and Beau made arrangements to have the three Gleason's residences cleared and the contents picked up and put into storage until he and Mrs. Gleason had the opportunity to go through the things.

Mr. Ryder scheduled the movers after everyone returned from Washington, D. C.  Beau called Mrs. Tillison, “Grams thanks for getting the houses alarmed.  These people are all really bad.”  After a long conversation, he went back to work.  Beau was content to stay in the background letting the other three people make the sales.  They all went to him for approval but he pointed to the Coopers and the Weavers.

The four teenagers were getting ready to leave when a very sophisticated looking man came in.  Berto greeted him.  The man asked, “Is Mr. Benson here?  I really would like to meet with him.  I have no weapons.  I just want to visit with him.”

Berto went to get Beau.  Beau had the gentleman sit down and the other teenagers and the Weavers and Coopers were all standing by in case something came up.  “Okay sir, what is it you wish to visit with me about?  I have the feeling that you are not from around here and you have something to do with the two goons that came in here yesterday.”

The man said, “My name is Larry Hart.  I represent a large gambling syndicate that you managed to expose when you had two of our operatives arrested.”

“I had no idea that the two of them had such long wrap sheets.  My employers would like to offer you and Mrs. Gleason and her granddaughter a small payment for any inconvenience.  We have secured the court account and realize that Mrs. Gleason’s children and their spouses were all takers.”

“Beau, I applaud you for standing up to everyone.  I just wish I could get out of this business, but the money is too good and my wife and I have become accustomed to living in the fast lane.”

The man looked around and said, “Beau, do you realize that you and that young lady over there who I assume to be Rebecca make a beautiful couple.”

“Mr. Hart, we are only 13 and just met less than a week ago.  Why would you think that we would be together?”  Beau asked.

“Beau, it is obvious that everyone in this store is looking like they would take me out if I even touched you.   I don’t know who all of the players are but you sure have a wealth of friends that are willing to go to bat for you.  I apologize for any inconvenience.”  Mr. Hart said as he handed Beau a cashier’s check.  “Here, you can use this check to finance you and your friends’ trip to D. C.”

“Mr. Hart, do you and your employers think that this would make everything right?” Beau asked.

“Beau, I don’t think that at all.  I have been working for these people for five years and this is the first time they have ever made an offer like this.  They had the check made out to you so you can disperse it anyway you see fit.  They trust you to make sure that it is used wisely.  I would be proud to call you son.  You humbled some very wealthy people.”  Mr. Hart said as he stood to leave.

“Mr. Hart, thank you for being up front with me.  I assume you also know a little about my past background and how I was misused.  I hope you can appreciate why I will not tolerate people I like being misused in any way shape or form.  Tell your employers I thank them for their generosity and will do everything that I can to make sure that everyone has a good time on the expedition to Washington, D. C.” Beau said, as he hugged the man.

Mr. Hart had tears in his eyes and just left.  Everyone was crowding around Beau and asked, “What was that all about?”

Beau said, “Don’t even ask or I’ll go into melt down.  Come on, we have work to do.”

Josh picked the young people up and took them home.  After the dinner cleanup, Dylan and Carole Anne took everyone to practice at the church.

Chip had indeed gotten the five year olds together and they were going to be one of the highlights of the show.  Jason spoke up and said, “Jeff, you need to get Beau and Rebecca to sing together.  They were clowning around the other day and started to sing I Can Do Anything Better Than You and some other crazy songs.  They would know how to work an audience.”

The practice ended and Beau said, “I won’t be able to go.  I have lost all mobility in my extremities.”  He fell to the floor and started squirming across the floor like a worm.

Clay went and sat down on him and said, “I’m a bird and I eat worms.”

Everyone was standing there laughing.  Jason said, “I’ll kick anyone in the behind that doesn’t do as Jeff directs.  Beau, you better be alert for some major attacks in bed tonight.”

The guys and Rebecca arrived home with Dylan and Carole Anne.  After dessert they went to get ready for bed.  The three guys showered together.  Beau was lying in his bed reading when he was dived bombed and his springs and mattress hit the floor.  The three guys just slept on the mattress all night.

On Friday morning, Beau was joined by a large group and they took off on their run.

After breakfast, Beau was doing laundry and talking on the phone. He turned to Mrs. Gleason and said, “We’re going to turn the cars over to Mr. Taylor.  He’ll have a special auction.  He’s rather excited since the vehicles are all new and luxury type vehicles.  You can be sure that you won’t get back all of the money your children spent, but something is better than nothing.  I really think that you should keep one of the vehicles for yourself Grandma Renee.”

Mrs. Gleason said, “I don’t want a fancy car.  I would be very happy with a car like Tommy has.”

Beau changed the subject. “Mr. Rider is going to start packing out the local residences starting on the sixth of July and we’re going to put everything in storage until we have a chance to go through the things.  We’ll sell the furniture at the Shoppe and maybe we should have a humongous yard sale with the other things.  I’ll talk to the Weavers and the Coopers and see how they want to handle it.”

“We’ll turn the properties over to Aunt Nancy and she can do what needs to be done.”

“Mr. Rider is going to talk to moving companies in Dubuque, Kansas City and Las Vegas to see if it would be worth while to have the things shipped here or to get rid of the contents locally.”  Beau finally wound down.

Dylan delivered Jason and Clay to Gigi’s house.  The crews were trying to do as many yards as they could today since they were going to be gone for five days.  Dylan promised to have lunch ready for them at 11:45.

Carole Anne took Mrs. Gleason and Rebecca shopping.  Beau was the only person at the house.  He finished the laundry and jumped on his bike after he packed a sandwich and had started dinner.  He arrived at the Shoppe and worked until they closed the Shoppe for the holiday weekend at 4:00.

Mrs. Weaver handed him the checks for everyone and said, “You are in charge of seeing that everyone one gets their checks.”  Beau put them in his backpack and rode to the bank.  He cashed the check that Mr. Hart had given him the day before.  He had some of it turned into traveler’s checks and got some cash.  The rest he put into his account so he could just swipe his card.

He went home and called everyone and told them the pool was open and that he had their checks if they wanted to come and pick them up.  When Dylan arrived with Jason and Clay there were people everywhere.  Some were swimming and others were playing soccer.  Shortly after Dylan arrived, Gigi arrived with Spencer, Trey, Chip and Ranger.  Beau made sure that there were two people on lifeguard duty and went to finish dinner.

Carole Anne pulled in with Mrs. Gleason and Rebecca.  The two younger gals were loaded with packages.  Mrs. Gleason went to rest and the other two started to put the things they purchased in the washing machine.

At 5:30, Beau closed the pool and everyone left or was waiting for their rides.  Dylan waited with the people who hadn’t left and at 5:45 he came in and went to Beau’s room and used the shower and changed.

After the evening meal was finished, Beau had Jason and Clay packing.  He made sure they had everything they needed.  Clay handed Beau an outfit and said, “Gigi made these for our Yankee Doodle Dandy song.”

Beau went and got his Dads, “Dad and Pops, please take me to Target.  I think I saw something there I need to get before we leave tomorrow.”

Beau found what he wanted and then they stopped at a Hobby Shop and Beau bought some more things and finally they stopped at a Toy Store and he found what he was looking for.

When they got back to the house, Beau packed another suitcase and put his purchases in it.

Finally everyone had left and everyone went to bed.  Everyone was exhausted and tomorrow was going to be an early day.
