Chapter 11

Taking on the Governor

Mrs. Tillison said, “That’s not like Beau.  He didn’t even stop to visit.”

Danny said, “Grams, I think that Beau is physically and mentally exhausted.  I don’t think he got very much sleep last night, if any.  He really needs time to be a teenager instead of everyone expecting him to be an adult all the time.”

“Mrs. T., Danny is right.  Beau is on overload and he just got another load dumped on him tonight.  He is a remarkable and loving young man he just needs time to be a teenager like Danny said.  He basically has lost two years of his youth.” I confirmed.

Before anyone could say anything, Dylan and Carole Anne arrived with the guys suitcases.  Carole Anne said, “I wish you could have seen how Beau acted these past two days.  He didn’t back down from anybody.  He is able to read people so well.  I can hardly wait to go back to Des Moines to see the differences in the company.”

Jeff came in and after he said hello to everyone he announced, “I won’t be in church the next two Sundays.  We’re going to two other churches to listen to our candidates.”

Jeff switched gears and asked, “Where’s Beau?”

“He went to bed.”  Mrs. T. answered.

“Is he ill?” Jeff asked.

“No, he’s just exhausted.” said Danny.

I changed the subject and explained what was going to be happening Thursday night and told everyone that dinner would be at 6:30.  Everyone left and Danny went to bed.  Jeff and I sat and talked about everything and decided that Beau needed a vacation.

I had just about fallen asleep when someone crawled into bed with Jeff and me.  “Someone please hold me.  I feel so alone.”

“Beau, you’re not alone, but get in here.”  I ordered and pulled him close to me.

The next morning, I was awakened by someone kissing me on the lips.  “Yuck, talk about cumatosis breath.”  Beau said, as he danced away from me before I could catch him.  “Come on you two, it’s raining; the other three guys are already down in the exercise room.”

Beau started to leave and Jeff grabbed for him and said, “You creep, you’re going to pay.”

“I ain’t paying for the little things that you and Dad have.  Jason is better endowed than you two.”  Beau said, as he ran out of the door.

Jeff started to laugh, “I think the monster is back in full form.”

We went down to the exercise room and Beau was working us good when the phone rang.

Tommy answered, “This is Tommy … Oh you want to talk to the slave driver … I’ll get him for you.”

“Beau someone called Robert Redford wants to talk to you.”  Tommy said as he handed Beau the phone.

Beau grabbed the phone.  “Hey Robbie, what’s up? … Hey it was my pleasure. … They what? … You mean Howie and Clark actually let them get skateboards.  What did your mother say? … She said she was going to learn to ride one too … Okay … Hey Pauli, how’s it hanging? … You had three propositions? … I guess we need to get you a chastity belt … Okay let me talk to her … Hey Lyn, how was your first day at work?  … I think you will be running the department before long … Your three sisters are what? … Why would they think that they were in heaven? …Just tell them not to let their new things go to their heads.  Thanks for calling.”

Beau looked at the clock.  “Everyone, go get your showers while I fix breakfast.”

Everyone left and Beau fixed us a hot breakfast and then went to shower and get ready for the day.  He came back and ate.  As we were getting ready to leave, he said. “Dad, you need a haircut and there is a shopping list for the food I want for tomorrow night’s dinner.”

Tommy dropped Danny and Beau off and Beau called the school and talked to Coach Winston and then he called Mr. Lincoln and asked him some question about the electrical problems at the Antique Shop.

It stopped raining and began to get quite warm so the guys rode their bicycles to the library.  Beau chained them all together.  The three thirteen year olds each had one or two five year olds and checked out books.  Ranger stayed outside and guarded the bikes.

When they got home, everyone had a snack, including Ranger.  They were fixing lunch when the phone rang.  Denny answered, “Just a minute, sir.”

“Beau, its Mr. Everett.”  Danny said.

Beau picked up the phone, “Hi sir, what can I do for you? … Oh really!  So Lance should never have been booked or jailed? … Could you send the reports to Mrs. Tillison’s house, and I’ll pick the faxes up there. … In the meantime, would you please send the original reports to me at Doctor Wilson’s house? … Thanks so much sir, and please send the bill to me and not Grams.”

Beau called my office and left a messaged, “Dad, it is important that you pick me up when you get off today.  I’ll explain later.”

Lash handed me the message and said, “It sounds important.”

After my last patient, I went to the Baxter house and picked up Beau.  As we were driving to Mrs. T’s house, Beau told me a shortened version of what was happening.  We went in and collected the faxes. As we were going back to Gigi’s, he was reading the reports.

Beau muttered, “This is even worse than I thought.  I’ll get Lance off even if I have to bring down the entire infrastructure of the Iowa state government.”

Since I had no idea what he was talking about, I didn’t say anything.

“Dad, pllease take me to the house, so I can make some phone calls please.”  Beau asked.

We went to the house and I was eating lunch while he was making phone calls.  “I’d like to talk to the Governor … Oh tell him if he doesn’t call me within thirty minutes the press is going to find out that he was in a gay bar groping an underage young man.”

Beau hung up and called another number, “I’d like to talk to the mayor … Tell him that I want to know why he had a young man wrongfully booked to cover the Governor’s bottom?  If he doesn’t call me within the half hour the press will have the gory details that will end his career.”

Beau made one more call.  “I’d like to talk to the Chief of Police please. … Oh let him know that I have a report that indicates that he is involved in covering up a crime committed by the Governor, and that if he doesn’t call me back in 30 minutes the press will have the full story and he’ll be pounding the streets looking for a job.”

Beau grabbed some fruit and sat down and started to tell me what was going on when the phone rang.  Beau answered, “Thanks for calling me back Governor. I have in my hands a report that says you were molesting an underage boy in a gay bar and that you lost a tooth when he resisted your advances.  You had him arrested to cover up your wrong doing.  If those charges are not rescinded within the hour, you, the Mayor and Chief of Police are going to find your names smeared across the Des Moines papers. And I’m considering releasing the story to the Associated Press.  If I don’t hear from the young man involved by six o’clock this evening, then your political career is over.  Oh, and I want him reimbursed for his money and for the damages that your out of control hormones caused.  Do you have any questions?”

Beau had just hung up when the phone rang.  Beau answered, “Oh hi Mayor, I just talked to the Governor.  I want Lance Elliott exonerated, and reimbursed for the charges and fees.  If I don’t hear from Mr. Elliott by 6:00 tonight, you can forget your political career because your name will be spread across the newspaper showing what a corrupt politician you are.”

Beau sat down and was about to start eating his sandwich and fruit when the phone rang, “Oh hi Chief … You already heard from the Mayor so then you better get the ball rolling.  I want Mr. Elliott cleared, and the appropriate persons punished.  If that doesn’t happen, you will be collecting unemployment.”

Beau sat down and said, “Dad, I’m sorry you had to hear all of that, but those people were about to ruin a young man’s life to save their behinds.  Come on; take me back to Gigi’s, while you go shopping.”

On the way, he quickly told me what had happened to Lance and what the report said.  I looked at him and said, “You opened a real bucket of worms with this one, but I’m glad you did.”

He gave me a kiss as he got out of the car, “Thanks for supporting me, Dad.”

Since I was told that I needed a haircut, I stopped by the salon and Gary was free.  Beau had his grocery list very well organized so it took me no time at all to get the required items including wine.  Jeff and I arrived home at the same time and we were putting the groceries away when the phone rang.

Jeff answered, “This is Jeff Wilson … I’m sorry Mr. Benson isn’t here Mr. Governor let me put my father on, since I don’t know what is happening.”

Jeff handed me the phone.  “Governor, this is Doctor Jack Wilson.  How can I help you? … I’ll tell you what sir, one of us will go get Mr. Benson and bring him here.  It would probably be better if you wouldn’t talk to him at work.  Too many ears.  Why don’t you call back in 30 minutes?”

Jeff and I went to get Beau.  When Beau got in the car, Jeff started on him.  Beau told Jeff what was happening and Jeff started to laugh.  “Why didn’t I guess that you were about to take down a Governor, Mayor and Chief of Police?”

We got home and Beau was telling us all about Lance and Wayne and the two little guys.  The phone rang and Beau answered.  “This is Beau Benson … Oh hi Governor Millsap … Lance is working at the Morrison Manufacturing Company, there in Des Moines.  If you would like, I can have him meet you in the Executive Suite in thirty minutes.  … Yes sir.  Thanks for calling, and I would like Lance to call me at this number as soon as you have concluded your business, and I’ll decide where we are going from there.  Goodbye sir.”

Jeff asked, “Beau, do you realize that you were talking to a Governor?”

“Yes, and I was kind.  I have a feeling that he is a real sleaze ball.” Beau answered as he started to fix dinner while he was talking on the phone.

“Hi Grandpa, can you get Lance and take him to the Executive Offices.  The Governor is coming to talk to Lance, and I don’t want you to leave the two of them alone at anytime.  When they are about finished with their business, have Lance call me.”

It was about 30 minutes later when the phone rang.  Beau answered, “This is Beau Benson … Oh hello Blue Eyes … so, what did the Governor say? … You mean he brought the Mayor and the Chief of Police with him? … So what happened? … They what? … Let me talk to the Governor.”

“Governor Millsap, what happened to the restitution for the damages and grief you caused Mr. Elliott.  He said that you had his sentence  rescinded and you returned his bail money, but there was no restitution for damages.  That is not acceptable.  We want a payment of $75,000.00 for irreparable damages your little foray caused.  You have until next Wednesday at 4:00 to come up with the money.  When and only when the money is received, will I give you the original documents.”

“If the three of you goons aren’t at the Morrison Manufacturing Company next Wednesday at 4:00 with $75,000.00, then I will release the documentation to the press, and they are going to be having a field day. … Thanks for calling.”  Beau hung up.

Jeff said, “Beau, you can’t talk to a Governor like that.”

“Why not?  He’s the one that caused Lance to be booted out of his family and caused him to live in near poverty and drop out of college and Lance did nothing wrong except take care of himself.”  Beau said.

Before Jeff could say anything, the phone rang again.  “Hey Grandpa M. what’s up? … He’s crying?  Why?  … He thinks he was hit by a cyclone.  Tell him to wait until next Wednesday. … The Governor said I was an obnoxious person.  Wait until he meets me next Wednesday.  Let me talk to Blue Eyes. … Hey Blue Eyes, are you moving back in with Aunt Mim and her family? … Cool, so what do the boys think? … Oh they are?  Okay, I’ll talk to you later. Be good.”

Beau turned to us and said, “Don’t even ask.  We have to get ready for this weekend.  Dad, go get the guys while I finish dinner.”

The meal was very subdued until Tommy asked, “Beau what did you say to Coach Winston?  He was almost like a puppy today.”

“I just told him that he could get more out of you guys and you would “play your hearts out if he showed a little compassion.  I told him that yelling only increased your anxiety level and that some of the players were talking about quitting the team.”  Beau answered.

“Beau, I was the only one who complained.” Tommy said.

“Tommy, you can bet that if you complained, there were a number of others on the team who felt the same way.”  Beau said.

Beau excused himself and said, “Jason, Danny and I are going to get this floor ready for our guests tomorrow.  He handed me a list and said, Dad, call these people to make sure that they can come tomorrow night.  Jeff, call someone and see if we can borrow a truck to get some tables and chairs from the church for tomorrow night.”

Everyone started working and I had the guest list completed.  Jeff called Aaron and he brought his truck.  Jeff, Aaron, Danny and Beau went and picked up the chairs and tables and brought them back.  They even set the tables and everything was ready for dinner except the food.

Everyone disappeared and went to bed.

To be continued...
