Chapter 46

Is It Bedtime Yet?

Jeff had made tacos and Mexican rice and the works for dinner.  When everyone was assembled, the food disappeared.  I think Carole Anne ate more than the guys, and Mrs. Davis wasn’t far behind.  Beau had everyone in stitches during dinner.

Beau had turned off the telephone during dinner so when everyone was finished, Jeff went to get the messages while the guys did the dishes.

Spencer, Chip, Tyler and Kevin arrived, and Beau took everyone to the dining room and said,

“Everyone, write this in cursive.  Dear Mr. and Mrs. Dog, I want to thank you for gift in Miles’ memory.  I can assure you that it will be used wisely.  Thank you for honoring him.

Beau looked at each of the people’s notes and assigned Jeff, Carole Anne, Tyler, Spencer and himself to writing the notes.  Mrs. Davis would sign them, and Kevin, Dylan, and Danny would address the envelopes.  Jason would put the notes in the envelopes and seal them and Chip would put the stamp on them.  I was relegated to a supervisory role.

Beau had everyone working and he returned the first call.  He had the mobile phone, and was standing so everyone could hear.  “This is Beau Benson returning Mrs. Franks call. … Yes ma’am, I’m free so far; what can I do for you? … You what? You want me to sit for five boys? … How old are the young men? … Ma’am, if I have trouble, may I call in reinforcements? … You want me both Friday and Saturday? … So Friday would be from 6:00-12:00 and Saturday would be 3:00 – 12:00. … Just a minute ma’am.”  Beau turned to me and I just shook my head yes.

Beau said, “Ma’am, I’ll be there and do my best. … Thank you for asking me and I’ll see you Friday night.”

Beau made a second phone call.  “Hey Uncle Dan, what’s up?  … Why are you asking me? … Just a minute let me ask him.”

“Danny, Uncle Dan wants to know if you would like to have dinner with him tomorrow night.  Here why don’t you two work it out?”  Beau said, as he handed the phone to Danny.

Beau came and sat down while Danny was talking on the phone and started writing.  He held up his note and said, “Why can’t my handwriting look as nice as Spencer’s?”

Carole Anne looked at his note and said, “If this were any more perfect, it would look like it was done by a calligrapher.  Most people would give an eye tooth to be able to write like this?”

Danny came back and said, “Uncle Dan wants to take me to dinner tomorrow night, so we can talk."  Is that okay?”

Beau got this fake angry look on his face and said, “I am really upset that he didn’t invite me too, but I guess its okay.”

Danny came back and said, “He’s going to pick me up at 6:00 and anyone who wants can come along.”

“Danny, I was just kidding.  He wants to spend time with you, and not us.  Just go, but remember curfew is 9:30.” Beau said.

Everyone was working when the heavens decided to rain people.  The doorbell rang and I answered and there stood the Weavers and the Coopers and I invited them in.

Mrs. Weaver said, “May we speak to Beau?”

I went into the dining room and said, “Beau, the Coopers and Weavers would like to talk to you.”

Beau got up slowly with a puzzled look.  He came into the living room and Chip was beside him.  Chip hugged each of them and said, “I’m busy, I have to go back to work.”

Mr. Cooper started, “Mrs. Weaver told us how you worked with Mrs. Hunt today and filled her requirements with such finesse that she was charmed.  When we delivered the items to her house this afternoon, all she wanted to talk about was the young man who had helped her.  She said she didn’t feel pressured by you, and everything that you said made perfect sense.  We would like you to consider coming to work for us.”

Beau got a funny look on his face and said, “Mr. and Mrs. Cooper and Mr. and Mrs. Weaver, I am only 13 years old, and if I came to work for you who would take care of your grandson and his friends?  Thank you for your offer and maybe we can work something out when school is over for the year.”

Beau looked at them and said, “I’d like to change the subject.  On the way back to Gigi’s today, Denny, Danny and I were talking about your store.  You really need to do several things to make it a more inviting place.  First you need to separate the antiques from the used furniture.  You should buy the empty building next door, so you can have two distinct types of merchandise and fix it so people can move easily between the two stores.”

Mr. Cooper said, “Beau, we already own that building.  Maybe we could meet next week and you guys could give us some ideas and make some constructive suggestions.”

Beau wasn’t done, “The second thing you need to do is make the store warm and inviting so people will feel comfortable and want to look around.  Right now it looks like a flea market with everything randomly placed.”

“Another thing that you need to do is put things in groups like the big furniture stores do, so people will be tempted to buy the entire display.  The last thing you could do to enhance sales would be to make sure that the furniture is dusted and polished so people could see what it would look like in their homes or wherever.”

“Now, if you will excuse me, I really need to help my friends.” Beau just left.

The Coopers and Weavers stood up to leave.  I took them to the dining room and they said goodnight.

Chip who was busy putting a stamp on an envelope so it would be straight said, “Goodnight Grandpas and Grandmas, I’ll see you later.”

The Weavers and Coopers had no more than pulled away from the house than Mrs. T. came in with Ben and Josh.  She walked right into the dining room and said, “Dylan and Carole Anne, we’re leaving for Des Moines at 12:30 tomorrow.  The board meeting is at 3:00.  We’ll meet Gigi and Beau at Gigi’s house and we can go from there.  Carole Anne, why don’t you drive your Jeep, in case Dylan has to stay over for some reason?”

Beau stood and said, “I can’t go.  If Gigi is gone, I can’t leave Denny and Danny alone with all those people.  What if something happens?”  Beau was almost starting to cry.

Danny looked at Beau and said, “Beau, something could happen even if you were there, and you might not know what to do.  We know how to use the phone and besides, Denny told me his mother was going to be spending the afternoon, so she could catch up on her reading and be waited on.”

Beau asked, “Why am I going, anyway?”

“Mrs. Morrison, Dylan’s Grandmother called me tonight and said she thought it might be a good idea for you to come along.  She must have something in mind, but she didn’t elaborate.”

“I’ll go if I have to, but I’m not happy about it.”  He went back to writing.

Before anyone could say anything, Hank walked in and said, “Jeff, we’re having the first meeting of the search committee tomorrow night at 7:00 at our house.  The Bishop will be there to help us to decide what we want the person we call, to do to help Father Gilbert.  We sure need you there.”

“I’ll be there, sir.” Jeff answered.

The guests left and at 8:30 the workers decided to call it quits.  Dylan and Carole Anne offered to take the finished notes to the post office and they left.  Tyler and Kevin took Spencer and Chip and Beau escorted Mrs. Davis to her car.

Beau, Danny and Jason cleaned the dining room and went and had a dish of ice cream.  Jeff and I were sitting in the living room and Tommy came down the steps looking very upset.

“Dad, do you want me to quit baseball and get a real job?”

Jeff said, “What in the world brought that question on?”

“I heard some guys talking today, and they said, ‘I was a spoiled brat.  I had a nice car and lived in a nice house and all I did was look pretty and sing.’  One of the guys said, ‘I bet he sucks up to the teachers, too.’”

“Tommy, why would they say that about you?” I asked.

“Dad, I have no idea.” Tommy laid his head on my shoulder.

“Tommy, are you sure they were talking about you?  You of all people do not fit that description.  You work harder than or as hard as your acquaintance.  If they were talking about you, which I doubt, it is because you are a good looking guy who’s talented and a good student.  We know that you work your tail off for what you get, and besides what would Uncle Lyle say if you quit baseball?” Jeff said.

Beau was standing in the doorway and said “Amen to that.  Uncle Lyle would be here so fast that your head would spin Sir Thomas.

Beau and Danny came in and Beau said, “Danny and I are going to initiate your tub tonight.”

”Wait.” I said, as I pulled out my briefcase and retrieved two documents.  “I have some news, I received two applications today to come and work in the clinic.”  I handed them to Jeff who read them.  Jeff handed them to Tommy.  After Tommy read them he handed them to Beau and he and Danny read them.

Beau said, “Dad, I think that you should consider asking both of them to join your practice. Dr. Male Lord could work with the male patients and Dr. Female Lord could work with the ladies and then maybe you could take some time off.  Now, all we have to do is to get Jeffrey to take some time off.”

“What about this.  Why don’t you invite them to come and spend this weekend with us?  They could sleep in the bedroom on the first floor here and then we can really get to know them and see if they would work.”

“Dad, Beau is right.  Why don’t you get in touch with them in the morning before you leave for Des Moines?”  Jeff said.

Beau and Danny disappeared upstairs as did Tommy.

Jeff and I talked for a short time and then we locked up.  We took a quick shower and went to crawl into bed but our bed had been short sheeted.  Jeff started to go get the guys when Beau and Danny came in and Beau said, “Danny, I told you they were identical twins.  The only difference is that Jeff has a mean streak and Dad just rolls with the punches.”

The guys quickly fixed our bed and Jeff and I didn’t even try to cover our genital areas since the guys had already seen them.  The guys gave us a quick kiss and left.
