Chapter 45

Becoming a Salesman

Tuesday was just a normal morning; Beau had everyone, even Danny, out running.  We only ran a leisurely three miles, since Danny was a novice.  When we got back to the house, Beau sent everyone to get dressed, while he fixed breakfast.

We all reassembled in the kitchen and he took off.  He came back and ate.  As he was finishing, he asked, “Dad, may I talk to you?”

We went to the piano room and he asked, “Dad, can you take me to the bank at lunchtime.  I would really like to get my money working, instead of just sitting in a safe.”

“Beau, call and make sure Randy Carmichael can be available and if he is, call me and say dynamite and away we’ll go.” I answered.

“Why dynamite?” Beau asked.

“If I hear that word, that will mean that I need to get out of there now.” I laughed.

He laughed and gave me a kiss and went and got his check and money and put it in his backpack.  Everyone departed and at 9:15, Beau called Mr. Carmichael and made the arrangements for us to meet him at 12:15.  Beau asked him to think about a tax expert he might use.  He also asked that the name on his accounts be changed to Beau B. Benson.  I’m sure Randy had no idea about what was about to happen.

Beau called the office and talked to Lash, “This is Beau, tell Doctor Dad dynamite at 12:15.”

Lash came and told me and just shook his head.

It was really a nice day outside and Beau decided the guys needed to get outside.  They put Ranger’s leash on him, which they didn’t really need because he wasn’t about to go far away from Trey.  They started walking and wound up at the antique store.  Beau walked in and Mrs. Weaver was working.

“Mrs. Weaver, is it okay if we come and just look around?  I have Chip and some of his friends with and a dog.  I promise they will behave.”

Mrs. Weaver waved for them to come in and Chip ran to his Grandma and gave her a hug and said, “Hi Grandma Weaver, come see my friends.”

Chip introduced his friends, even Ranger who yipped.  Beau, Danny and Denny started to look around while Mrs. Weaver talked to the five year olds.

A lady came in and went to Beau and said, “Young man, I’d like to get some nice furniture for our son who just turned 14.  Could you help me?”

Beau looked at Mrs. Weaver and she nodded yes.  “Ma’am, I’d be glad to help you.  What do you have in mind?  Are you thinking about antiques or good used furniture?  I think good used furniture would be more suitable, since your son probably wouldn’t appreciate antiques and you could save some money possibly get some extra items to really make it a comfortable place.”

“I think you’re right.” the lady answered.

Beau said, “I’m Beau Benson.

The lady said, “I’m Ellen Hunt.  We just moved here last week and this will be the first time the guys have each had their own bedrooms.  Our young son who is 9 wants the bunk beds so Justin needs something for his room.”

Beau asked, “Do you know how big Justin’s room is?”

Mrs. Hunt pulled out a sheet of paper and said, “His room is 20 x 12 feet.”

Beau pulled a pad out of his backpack and drew the imaginary room and said.  Can you show me where the windows and doors are?”

Mrs. Hunt drew the windows and doors and Beau asked a couple of more questions and started to draw an imaginary layout and explained each step.  A nice king sized bed could go against this wall, with a night stand either side, a good sized dresser could fit in this area, and a nice book case to hold a television and stereo system could go here, and most importantly, a large study area could go here for Justin’s computer and still have a place where he could study and not be bothered.

Beau looked around and said, “Here is a nice sturdy bed.  It seems to be in good condition.  It looks like its solid cherry and look over there at those two night stands and dresser.  They are of the same wood.”

Beau looked around and said, “Wow, this bookcase would be perfect and looks like it will fit in the area between the closet and the bathroom door.  It’s big enough to store Justin’s collectibles and still house a television and stereo or DVD system.  That table could easily be converted to a nice study table and computer stand.   See this small cabinet here.  It would be storing the printer under the table.”

Beau looked around and said, “Now, all we need is to find some lamps, one for each night stand and one for the study area.”  Beau looked around and said, “These would be perfect.  They are even wired for three light bulbs so Justin could control the amount of light.  Now, what about a good used mattress set?  If your son is anything like me, he can sleep on anything.  If you put a good mattress cover on it he’ll never know the difference.”

Mrs. Hunt was looking at everything and Beau said, “Hey this barrel would make a perfect clothes hamper.  Justin could put his dirty clothes in it until he does his laundry.”

Mrs. Hunt said, “You mean until I do his laundry don’t you?”

“Ma’am he is old enough to do his own laundry.  He needs to start looking out for himself.  In fact, my nine year old brother and I do the laundry all the time.”

Beau sat down in a comfortable blue chair.  “Boy this chair is comfortable and would be great to sit in to read or watch television.”

Mrs. Hunt said, “Beau, I’ll take everything including the barrel and the chair.  How much do I owe for the things and how soon can you deliver them?”

Grandma Weaver, Mrs. Hunt would like to purchase all of these things and wants to know how much they will cost, and how soon you can have them delivered.”

Mrs. Weaver did some calculating and the price was agreed upon, and as the lady was paying, Mr. Weaver and Mr. Cooper came in.  Mrs. Weaver asked, “Charlie, how soon can you deliver these things for Mrs. Hunt?”

Mr. Cooper said, “We’ll get the guys to load them now, and we can leave in about 45 minutes.”

Chip came over and gave his Grandfathers a hug and said, “Come Beau, you promised us some ice cream.  Can we go now?”

Beau shook Mrs. Hunt's hand and said, “I hope that Justin enjoys his new room.  Tell him that Denny, Danny and I are looking forward to meeting him.”

Beau said, “Come guys, let’s hit the ice cream store next door.”  The guys each got a small cone and Beau had them get a small dish of vanilla for Ranger.  Ranger ate his and Trey made sure that Ranger put the empty dish in the trash container.

When the guys got back to the house, Beau fixed everyone soup and a sandwich.  Everyone except Beau was eating when I arrived.  Beau told everyone that he would be back by 1:00.

We got to the bank and Randy was waiting for us.  Randy had the name on all of Beau's accounts changed so all Beau had to do was review and sign them.  When he finished signing the papers, Beau handed Randy the check from the art auction and said, “I would like to deposit these funds into my investment account.”

Andy looked at the check and asked, “Is that real?”

Beau said, “Yep.  Now, can you handle it or not?  There will be another large check coming in this afternoon when one of our friends opens his account, so you'd better be nice when Adam gets here.”

“You mean Adam Ammons.  He called me and made an appointment for four o’clock.”

“That be the dude.”  Beau laughed.

Randy handed Beau his deposit slip and Beau said, “There are only eight people who know how much money is involved, and that includes you, so we would appreciate it very much, if you can handle the transaction so that no one gets an idea of how much we have.  Even Uncle Hank has no idea and my new Dad doesn’t know the full amount either.  Now, were you able to get me the names of reliable tax consultants?”

Andy handed him the list and Beau thanked him and shook his hand.  As Beau was standing, he said, “I almost forgot, please put this money into my regular checking account, so I have some money to spend when and if I ever get time.”   Randy was just sitting there shaking his head when he saw the deposit slip.

We stopped at a deli and picked up two already packaged sandwiches and ate them in the car.  When we got to Gigi’s house, Beau climbed out and said, “Thanks Dad.”

At Counseling/Psychology class, Jeff said, “We have had a very interesting time this weekend.  I am going to have Dylan share what happened with you to a certain point, and then the class will discuss what you think should be done, and then Dylan will tell you how the problem was resolved,”

Dylan told what happened up until Sunday after the party.  He made sure that he didn’t use any names but Mitchell started to laugh and asked, “Have I met all of the people involved?”

Dylan nodded yes and Mitchell said, “So Beau struck again.”

Okay classes, get in your teams and discuss what you think should be done and then get on your side of the room and we’ll share what you came up with and then Dylan will share what really happened and how it was resolved.”

The classes had a good discussion and Jeff said, “Dr. O’Connell and Dr. Cornell what do you think should happen?”

They agreed that both sets of parents should be turned in for child abuse and that both boys should receive counseling.

Jeff said, “Dylan, why don’t you tell the class just how Dr. Beau handled the problems?”

Dylan did and the entire class including the two professors started laughing.  Tricia asked, “Is what Beau did legal?”

Jeff said, “I guess we’ll never know, but there was a law officer’s and Social Services Director’s signature on the documents and I don’t think that any court would throw the documents out.  Beau has already laid some groundwork with the judicial system.  Ladies and gentlemen, that’s a wrap for today.  I’ll see you at the homes on Thursday.”

Jeff, Mitch and Dylan left together, and Mitch asked, “What’s going to happen to Danny?”

“Mitch, I don’t know yet.  Right now, Danny is staying at our house until Beau decides what’s best for Danny.  Come on, let’s get some lunch.”  Jeff urged.

Mitch said, “I have to go take Lenny for a dentist appointment.  He had a cavity.”

Dylan and Jeff met Carole Anne at the Union Building and Jeff invited them to dinner.  Jeff and Carole Anne hurried to music class.

At Gigi’s house, the five five year olds were resting when Jeanne Potts arrived.  The three 13 year olds went into the kitchen and Beau introduced Danny and said, “We need to get Danny ready for school next year.  Denny and I will help all we can, but I’m afraid that he is going to resent us bossing him around all the time.”

Jeanne said, “Beau and Denny, you two guys go read Shakespeare or Freud or someone, while I visit with Danny, please.”

The two guys were reading on the sofa when Danny came in and motioned for them to come.  Ranger went with them to make sure that nothing was wrong.

Jeanne said, “Guys, Danny knows that he is behind you two, but he is willing to give it his all to be ready for August.  Now, it’s your job to find time to work with him.  He also says that he has never been a good student so that is the first thing we need to work on.  You need to work with him every day even if it is only for ten minutes, to help keep him motivated.”

Beau went to Jeanne and hugged her and said, “I’m so glad that we have the intelligent Dr. Potts on our team.  Please don’t tell Dr. Billy that I said that, or he will come after me with a shotgun.”

Chip came in and said, “Its 2:30, we’re going to the bathroom and then can we go meet the others, since it is so nice outside.”

Beau said, “Yes Denny and Danny and Ranger will go with you, while I fix the snacks.”

The seven boys plus Ranger left and Jeanne asked, “Beau, what’s the story on Danny and who was Dusty?”

Beau told her the stories and what happened last night.  All she said was, “Oh my God!  I can’t believe there are people who would do that to their children.  I feel terrible for the two guys.”

“Dr. Jeanne, I think that both guys are going to come out of this standing tall and someday they will be somebody that counts.  We just need to be here to support and provide help when we can, but we can’t do everything for them.  They have to be able to take care of themselves.”

The guys and gals came and Toby said, “Oh no, it’s health food day.”

Larry said, “At least you are having a snack.  We’re probably among the 10% of people in the world who have a snack and three meals a day.”

No one said another word and just ate what Beau had fixed.  Jeanne looked at Beau and Gigi and the two ladies went to have their tea and snacks in the sewing room.  The guys cleaned up and the homework clubs got busy.

Beau called Mrs. Davis and asked her to dinner.  She started to decline saying she had to work on the thank you notes for the memorials honoring Mr. Davis.  Beau said, “Bring the cards along and we can help with them.  Spencer has the most perfect handwriting that you will ever see and Jeff and I are fairly decent.  Jason and Danny can address the envelopes and Chip can put the stamps on the envelopes.  I’ll make sure everyone is there.”

Beau called home and told Jeff that he had invited Mrs. Davis and what they were going to be doing.

I stopped to pick the guys up and as we were leaving, Beau told Spencer, “Someone will pick you and Chip up about 6:45, to help Grandma Davis with her thank you notes.  Tyler was standing there and said, “We’ll bring the guys.  Maybe Kevin and I can help too.”

To be continued...

Feedback always welcome:

Editor's Notes:

I bet Randy was surprised when he saw that check.  Not too many kids Beau's age have anything close to that much money.
