Chapter 34
Confrontations

Beau changed clothes and packed a backpack with his swim suit, shampoo and conditioner.  He disappeared downstairs and Jason, Tommy and Danny came down after they collected their things, and Jeff put his swim things in a small overnight bag.

Everyone who wanted to change had done so and we caravanned to Mrs. T.’s house.  Jeff, Beau, Kenny and Drew were the greeters and escorts for those people that did not know the way to the pool.

Everyone had arrived except Casey.  Jeff went downstairs to explain the rules to the people.  Beau was starting to pace but the Colliers arrived at precisely two o’clock.  Beau grabbed Casey and said, “Jason has your suit in his backpack.  The other five Colliers followed the guys downstairs.  The Collier’s eyes got really large when they saw the pool and all of the people.

Everyone was swimming and having a good time except those persons who were on life guard duty.  At 3:00, Jeff blew his whistle three times and said, “Break time for anyone under the age of 11 and over 14.”

That left the eleven and thirteen year olds free time to swim.  Beau had climbed out and was watching when Melanie Tillison started to struggle and call for help.  There were three bodies hurdling through the air.  The first one to reach Melanie was Ranger.

Melanie put her arm around Ranger and he was struggling but was making progress and Beau and Jeff started helping.  They helped Melanie out and then took Ranger to the area steps so he could walk out.  Trey was standing there and threw a towel over Ranger and said, “Don’t shake!  Follow us.”

The five year olds disappeared into the shower room and there was a lot of laughter.  Dylan went to check on them.

When he came back he announced, “Ranger is being shampooed and conditioned by the five 5 year olds.  They are preparing him for a heroes welcome.”

Carole Anne had taken Melanie to the shower and when Carole Anne came out, she was pale.  She went to Jeff who called me over.  She said, “Doctor Wilson and Jeff, I think Melanie has been abused. Her pelvic area is very red and swollen.”

Jeff said, “C.A., I hate to ask you to do this, but when I get the other young ladies out, I want you to check out Melody to see if it is also noticeable with her.”

At 3:50, Jeff sent everyone under the age of eleven to the showers while the older people swam for ten more minutes. While the younger group was in the shower with Jeff, Beau and C.A., the older young people and adults were setting up a buffet line.

When Jeff and Beau came out, Beau said, “Not again, but I think I already know who did this.  Jeff, who do you think it was?”

Jeff flatly said, “Uncle Lyle.”

Beau said, “I agree.”

They went and grabbed Uncle Lyle and took him to toward the pool and started to swing him counting, “One, two, three, now you belong to me.”  They both hugged him and he reciprocated.  Just then Barry and Mr. and Mrs. Hendrix came in and they sure didn’t look happy.

Mrs. T. went to them and said, “Put it on ice.  Don’t ruin a good day for the young people.  They have worked hard for this party.”

She turned and said, “I believe the food is ready.  Bishop Lancaster, would you please ask God’s blessing on our food and those assembled.”

Bishop Lancaster’s prayer was comprehensive and specifically mentioned Beau, Jeff and all of the young people and praised their understanding of the importance of the day.  He then said something that surprised me.  “God, please help those families here who are experiencing difficulties and help them heal the wounds and help them to be able to live their lives more like you would have them do. Amen.”

The young guys made sure that the older ladies went through the line first with Aunt Cora, accompanied by Beau, leading the line.  Everyone was eating and Beau and Jeff were circulating and visiting with everyone in the room when Tyler stood to make an announcement.

“I have an announcement.  We will be starting to work on the Tillison house tomorrow.  We’ll be tearing out the carpet tomorrow night, and then starting Tuesday, if anyone is free during the day and would like to work, the pay will be the same $12.00 per hour.  I'll leave the keys at Gigi’s house, and you can pick them up there.”

Beau piped up, “There will be a $10.00 nonrefundable fee for the use of the keys.”

Dylan asked, “How come?”

Beau flipped back, “I have to be able to pay for my pedicure somehow don’t I?”

Kenny spoke up, “Quick everyone, check out the keys often so we can get rid of the smell in here.”

Beau glared and everyone started to applaud.

I was watching Carlton and he didn’t talk to anyone.  Kenny and Tommy both tried to initiate a conversation with him, but he brushed them off.  Casey's parents kept to themselves while the older Colliers visited and had Casey introduce them to his friends.

The young Mrs. Morrison, Dylan’s mother, ate very little and spoke to nearly no one.  Mrs. Robinson and Grandma Morrison were visiting with each other.  All of a sudden, Mrs. Robinson said, “Carole Anne, could I talk to you for a minute?"

Beau, Jeff and I were standing there when Mrs. Robinson asked, “Carole Anne do you know what the SZQ is?”

“That’s the name of my sister’s ranch in Texas and the brand that she puts on the livestock she raises for the rodeos.  She received it as a gift from our grandparents when they moved to Florida to live on a houseboat.”  Carole Anne answered.

“Do you know what the Tumbling R stands for?"   Mr. Robinson asked.

“That’s the name of the ranch that is next to my sister’s that is owned by the Robinsons.”  Carole started to laugh, “I knew I had met you before.  Here I am in Nebraska meeting people from Iowa and why I shouldn’t I recognize them as the owners of a huge horse ranch in Texas?”

Mrs. Robinson laughed, “You think that’s funny.  Do you know what the Lazy T is?”

“That’s the ranch on the other side of yours.  I have never met the owners though.” Carole said.

Mrs. Robinson said, “Oh, but I think you have.  Aggie, we need you.  Would you tell Carole Anne what the name of your ranch in Texas is?”

Mrs. Tillison looked at everyone funny and asked, “Which one?  I have two, but I guess you mean the Lazy T.”

Carole and the Robinson’s and everyone who had been listening started to laugh.  Mr. Robinson said, “Carole Anne is the granddaughter of the Gordons who used to own the Galloping G ranch, which is now called the SZQ ranch after its new owner who is Carole Anne’s sister.”

Beau asked, “If your older sister got the ranch in Texas, what did you get?”

“Beau honey, I am older and I chose the dude ranch in Colorado because I love it there and my parents have a spread right next door.  My parents had first choice and they chose the ranch in Arizona, my Uncle and Aunt took the condo in Palm Springs, so all Suzie who is 16 got was the measly ranch in Texas which was what she wanted anyway.”

The Colliers approached Beau, and Casey’s father said, “We’re going to take Casey now.”

Beau said, “No, I don’t think so, not until we talk.  D. Dad and Jeff take these people upstairs to the conference room, and I’ll meet you there in a minute.”  Beau went and talked to Tommy, Denny, Danny and Mickey.

He came into the room with Norm, and Beau made the introductions and then stated.  “Casey talked in his sleep and said some things that were very interesting.  I’m going to ask some questions, and I want some straight answers.”

He turned to Carlton and asked, “So how long has your father been having sex with you?”

Carlton without thinking said, “Since I was fourteen.”

His father started to stand and was looking very ill.  Beau said, “Sit down, sir or we’ll make you sit down.”

Beau turned to Carlton who had realized his blunder and got really red.  Beau asked, “How often do you and your father have sex?”

Carlton was started to look defeated when Beau went for the juggler vein and asked, “And how old was Chucky when you started to force him to have sex with you?”  Beau was glaring.

“I guess he was about 11, and I was 15.”  Carlton whispered back.

“So you are the person that hurt and denigrated him until he felt so trapped that he took his life to escape the pain of what you were doing to him.”  Beau wasn’t finished.

He turned to Casey’s mother and said, “I can’t believe you let something like this happen.  Casey told me that you are never home when he gets home from school, because you are always playing bridge or at a wine and cheese party or something.  He says you never cook that you always eat out or order in.”

“I’m telling you right now that Casey is never going back to your house, even if I have to call the Police and Social Services who just happen to be represented here today, by the top persons.”

“Grandpa and Grandma Collier, are you willing to take Casey with you and not let him alone with these people again?”

Dr. Collier, as it turned out, said, “Yes Mr. Beau Benson.  We promise to love and protect Casey and keep him from any more harm.”  Grandma Collier nodded in agreement.

Beau said, “Okay, I want you to go back to Casey’s house and pack everything he might need sometime tonight.  We’ll take him home for the night and D. Dad will do a complete physical on him first thing in the morning.  You can meet them at D. Dad’s office at 8:00 if you wish.  Once the physical is completed, you can chug on down the road to Lincoln. Now I have to bring Casey.”

Beau came back with Casey.  When Casey came into the room, he pulled back but Beau said, “Mighty Casey, go sit between D. Dad and Jeff.  I have some exciting things to tell you. First, you’re going to be spending the night with Jason and no snoring please.  Number two, Doctor Wilson is going to take you to work to with him tomorrow and give you a complete physical to make sure that you are as strong as the original Mighty Casey.”

“Number three, after the physical, you will be going with your Grandparents to live with them in Lincoln.  Before you say anything, they have a lot of neat nine year people in Lincoln so you will have lots of friends, and finally, anytime we have a swim party, we’ll call you and see if you can swing up here.”

Casey caught Beau by surprise when he leaped up on him, but Beau caught him and Casey gave Beau a big hug and a kiss.  Beau said, “Thanks my man.  Now go make sure Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Lyle are okay.”

The Colliers stood and the grandparents hugged Beau and said their farewells.  The other three said nothing, but they looked rather defeated.

Norm grabbed Beau and said, “Beau, you can’t go around making people look like fools.  You bluffed your way through this one, but you could be opening yourself for a slander suit.”

Beau grabbed Norm’s face and said, “Uncle Norm, I was only doing what you lawyers do everyday.  I got lucky on this one and won, thank heavens.  I really like Casey’s grandparents and I think he’ll really thrive with them.”

Jeff and I just stood there shaking our heads as Beau and Norm were leaving.  We were intercepted by Mrs. Tillison who said, “Get the Morrison’s, C. A. and Dylan in here, now.  Oh and get Beau too.  This is entirely his fault.”

Jeff and I did as we were told and Beau was complaining big time about going to another meeting.  He came in and sat in the back.  No one knew what this meeting was about.  Mrs. Tillison started looking at Dylan’s grandfather, “Will, what is that you do?”

“I own and am CEO of the Morrison Manufacturing Company.  We produce state of the art kitchen appliances and small amenities for the home.” the older Mr. Morrison answered.

Mrs. Tillison turned to Dylan’s Dad and asked, “Bill, what do you do?”

“I am President of the Corporation.” he answered.

Mrs. T. had a funny look on her face and asked, “So, how is the company doing?”

The younger Mr. Morrison said, “We are really thriving and have continually been gaining in the marketplace.”

“Oh, why then are my stocks in your company continuing to decline in value?  It seems to me you haven’t done or produced anything new for the last ten years.  By the way, I own 51% of the shares in the company.  How many do you own?”

Beau moved his chair to the table and started to pay attention. The senior Mr. Morrison said, “I guess I must own the other 49% then.”

Grandma Morrison spoke up and said, “You own nothing.  The other shares are in my name.  So what do you propose, Agatha?”

“I think we should name Dylan the CEO; and you could become the President and run the company while he is finishing his college education and sewing his wild oats.”

Beau said, “Grams, you’re embarrassing poor Land and C.A.  Let them be wild and free.  I mean after all C. A. has a Dude Ranch in Colorado, and now Land has to worry about a widget company in Des Moines.  Heck they’ll wear out the roads between Denver and Des Moines.  Now who’s going to be on the board to get this widget company ready for the 22nd century?”

Dylan started to object and said, “I don’t want to be a CEO.  I want to be a counselor and work with troubled youth like Danny.”

Beau flipped back, “So be an efficient CEO from 9:00 to 2:00, then donate your time to organizations and facilities that work with troubled youth.  I am sure they have such places both in Des Moines and Denver.  Hey, if you and C.A. get serious you could expose the young people to the experiences of being on a Dude Ranch.”

Beau asked, “Grams and Grandma Morrison, what do you propose to do with Dylan’s Grandfather and his parents?”

Mrs. Morrison said, “They have been basking in the past glory of the company for too long.  If it goes on like this for much longer, we’ll all go bankrupt except Dylan.  If he manages his finances correctly, he will be set for life.  That is, if his wife or partner doesn’t spend it all.”

Dylan’s father said, “Mother, what are we going to do?  The Company has been my entire life?  I’ll have to get a job.”

“So be it.”  Mrs. Morrison said.  “Maybe both of you could get jobs to maintain your pretentious lifestyle.”

Beau stepped in and said, “Grams, let’s decide who is going to be on the new Board of Directors.  If Dylan is going to be the CEO and Grandma Morrison is going to be President, it is a given that you need to be on the board.  Now, we need to find some good people to keep the bad guys away.”

Mrs. Tillison thought for a minute and said, “Jack honey, you are going to be on the board.  You aren’t afraid to tell me to shove it.  Now we need some more people.”

Jeff asked, “How about Granddad Robinson?”

“Excellent choice, go get him.”  Mrs. T. directed.

Beau said, “How about Granddad Ben?”

“Go get him; he’ll be good at helping us get into peoples minds.”  Mrs. T said.

When the two of them had been coerced to be part of the board, Beau said, “Okay, now the Board is stacked with four men to two women.  We need to add another lady who is used to working with the products of the company.  How about Gigi or Mrs. Edmond?”

Mrs. T. thought for a minute and said, “Either would be good choices but I think that Mrs. Edmond is still adjusting and becoming accustomed to her new environment and lifestyle.  The more I think about it, Gracie would be an excellent choice because she wouldn’t be afraid to tell us we were full of hot air if necessary.  Beau, go get her.”

Beau went and got Gigi and when Mrs. Tillison told Gigi what they wanted, Gigi started to laugh.  “You have to be kidding.  I am an old seamstress.  What do I know about business?”

Beau put his arms around her and said, “Gigi, this Board is going to need someone who knows what is needed in the home.  Look at the other members.  Doctor Dad knows about health issues, Grandpa Robinson knows about finances, Granddad Ben knows about the mind, Grams knows about bossing people around, and Grandma Morrison can handle the public relations and publicity with her charms.  Your job would be to keep them on track and besides, someone has to be available to change Dylan’s diapers when he wets his pants.”

Carole and Jeff were laughing and Dylan dove for Beau and took him down, but Beau wound up sitting on Dylan’s chest.  “Remember boy CEO, I’m coming through your company and tearing it apart and I’m thinking about starting with the new boy CEO.”  Beau stood up and helped Dylan up and they hugged each other.

“Grams, may I go now?” Beau asked.

She said, “Don’t leave the house.  I want you Carole Anne and D. Dad available for the next meeting.  Dylan can make sure that Danny gets dropped off at the home.  Jeff, I think you should stay here too.”

To be continued...

Editor's Notes:

Oh my goodness, what does Mrs. T. have up her sleeve now?  I think we are in for still more surprises. I can hardly wait to find out.
