Chapter 23
 Good News

On Monday morning I was awakened by Beau lifting the sheet covering my body.  “Yep, just as I thought,  someone needs to go to the bathroom.  Here is your coffee.  Breakfast is in 20 minutes.”

Beau bounced out of the room.  I quickly took a shower and dressed and went downstairs.  As I sat down, Beau served me my breakfast.  Jeff and Beau sat down after everyone had been served.

As everyone finished, they rinsed their dishes and put them in the dishwasher.  Linda spoke up and said, “Since it looks like I am not driving anyone anywhere this morning, I’ll take care of the rest of the dishes and fix dinner.”

As Jeff was leaving with Beau, he said, “Dad, would you pick up Beau and Teddy tonight.  I may be late.”

My drive with Teddy to his school was going to turn out to be the highlight of my mornings.  He would talk constantly and didn’t shy away from any subject.

The day went quickly for me and as I was getting ready to leave, Mrs. Tillison came in with Beau’s blood test results, and handed them to me.

I looked at what she handed me, “How did you get these, when they didn’t come in the delivery this afternoon?”

“I called the manager of the lab and asked if Beau’s result were ready.  He told me they were finished too late to make the courier this afternoon, so I went to pick them up along with two other sets of results, and brought them.  Now what do Beau’s tests show?”

I reviewed them and told her; she got ready to leave.  I asked, “Who drove you?”

“I drove myself.  I do know how to drive, but it’s not my favorite thing to do anymore.” she answered.

I gave the results to Lash and asked him to make two copies.  He looked at them but said nothing.  I took one copy and went to pick up the guys.  They talked the entire way home.  When we got into the house, Mickey and Beau started to talk.  “Dr. Josh came to the house and gave me some sort of test.  It was weird.  I had to figure which was the correct answer to a bunch of really weird questions.” Beau said.

Jeff finally came in, as everyone was sitting down.  “Sorry I am so late, but I had some errands to do.”

Jeff’s day must have gone smoothly since he didn’t talk about it.  I was to find out later how music class went when he changed clothes three times and Dr. Potts told the class that Jeff had skillfully taught more history as well as music and included some economic and sociological information of value. He led the class in a standing ovation as Jeff ended the class.

Jeff announced, “That ends my active participation in this class.  From now on, I am going to sit back and listen to the rest of you.  On Wednesday, the groups will decide what areas they want to work on for their presentations.”

We were just finishing dinner when the phone rang.  It was for Mickey and before he could sit down again, there was a knock at the back door.  Mickey answered, “Hi Mr. Montgomery and Davey.  Come in, please.”

“Mickey we wanted to make sure you would be available to sit with Davey on Saturday.” Colin said.

“I can sit, but I’m not sure when I will be able to get there.  I have another commitment in the afternoon.  I’ll let you know what time I can come.”

“That’s fine, Mickey,” Colin said, as he went to leave.

Davey came over to me and asked, “Can I go back to school tomorrow Doctor Wilson?”

“Davey, I think you should stay home until Thursday, and then I don’t want you to wear anything tight against your incision for a couple of days, and no physical activity until next week.” I answered.

Davey thought for a minute and then said, “But the guys will laugh at me when I go to the bathroom, and don’t have any underwear on.”

Mickey said, “Let me see your incision.  I think I know how we can solve your problem.”

Davey pulled up his shirt and lowered his pants so the incision showed, and Mickey said, “I know how to solve your problem.  I’ll stop by tomorrow night with the answer.”

“Okay, bye.” Davey said, as they left.

I pulled two pieces of paper of my pocket and handed them to Beau.  He read the first one and said, “I can’t do this.  There will be no one there to watch Chip and Gigi.”

“Well, tell us what it says, so we can see what we can do to help.” Jeff said with authority.

“It says I have to be in Omaha at the Nebraska Medical Center at 7:30 on Thursday.  Gigi has her appointment with her surgeon on Wednesday to see if she can get her cast off. If she does, she will still be on crutches and hardly able to move at first.  We’ll just have to cancel the appointment.”

Linda interrupted Beau, “I have nothing planned for Thursday.  I’ll substitute for you, since there is nothing for me to do here.”

Beau got up and hugged her and said with tears in his eyes, “Thank you Aunt Linda.  That would be so good of you.  Then I wouldn’t have to worry.”

He sat down and read the second piece of paper and looked at me and asked, “Does this mean what I think it says?”

“Probably.” I answered.

He looked at Mickey very seriously and said, “Call Chris and Denny, and tell them I am sending up smoke signals in Arabic, because I don’t want anyone else to understand them.  Tell them to get their bottoms here if they want to know the results.”

He got up and started to clear the table and Sammy said, “I’ll take care of this.”

Beau ignored him and said, “I have to do something.  I’m so nervous.  I can’t sit still.”  The two guys were working away with Beau asking all sorts of questions about what high school was like and how the swim team practice went.

Mickey came back and announced, “Two 13 year olds inbound.  They can’t read smoke signals in Arabic.”

Sammy and Beau finished the dishes and Teddy excused himself and asked, “Doctor Dad, since I have no idea what is happening, is it okay with you if I go watch a video in your room.”

I nodded yes and just then the people descended on us.  Billy and Reg were there to start the lighting in Jeff’s study.  Right behind them came Tyler, Matt, Mark and Kevin to start the work in the basement.  They went to their areas and Chris and Denny arrived.  I noticed that Linda, Eric and Sammy had stayed close and when everyone was assembled, Beau read.  ‘The results of the blood tests show that there are no foreign bodies in the blood, and all body functions seem to be operating normally.  However, we recommend another blood test as soon as possible to confirm these findings.’

Everyone yelled and Mickey asked, “Does that mean we can kiss you now?”

“Not on your life garlic breath.”  Beau answered.

The door bell started to ring and Beau answered it.  “Is Mickey here?  I’m Mr. Cross from school, and this is Eddie.”

“Please come in sir.  Mickey is in the living room with our friends.”  He led the two of them into the living room and took their coats.

Before Beau could introduce them Chris said, “Hi Doodlebug, you are even cuter than the last time I saw you.”

“I’m not a Doodlebug, you meanie,” challenged Eddie.

Beau hit Chris on the arm and said, “You need glasses.  Eddie isn’t a bug.  From now on we will call him Doodle.  Look at him.  He’s just about the most handsome man I have ever seen. Doodle, why don’t you come with me and we’ll find something to do while these people visit?”

The two of them went upstairs and Mickey asked, “Sir, how may I help you?”

“I wanted to meet all the people you and Denny mentioned in your papers today.  I take it that was Beau, who just kidnapped my son, and so who is Jeff?” Mr. Cross asked.

“I’m Jeff, sir.” Jeff said, as he shook hands.  “This is my father Doctor Jack Wilson.”

“I know Doctor Wilson, but I didn’t know he had a son.”  Mr. Cross said.

The door bell rang and before anyone could answer, Josh, Ben and Mrs. T. walked in.  “Hi Doug, what are you doing here?  Is Eddie with you, and how is Vickie?  I haven’t seen you people for a long time.  This is my son Josh and his friend Ben.”

She stopped and Jeff said, “Beau has Eddie upstairs.  I’m surprised to see you.”

“I came to tell you that your grandparents are coming to stay with me next weekend.”

Before she could continue, Beau came down and announced, “Mr. Cross, I made a play date for Doodle tomorrow night with Chip.  Doctor Dad, Reg is going to bring Chip to the office when I have my tests, and then maybe you can check him over, too.”

“Now everyone, I want to hear about the second day of Denny’s new life.” Beau said.

“I had a great day, until I went to math.  I had no idea what was going on, and I asked Mrs. Emerson if I could ever catch up.  She was very patient with me, and explained that math wasn’t something that you could make up if you didn't have the basic skills.”  Denny looked like he was going to cry.

“Okay Mr. Dennis the Menace, time to get you home.” interjected Jeff.  “Come on I'll drive you home in the T bird,”

As Denny and Jeff were getting ready to go, Josh was talking to Jeff and gave him some papers and said, “If I am even close in my findings, he is something else.  Check at the college tomorrow and see if there is anyone who can do a formal test.”

Jeff looked at the paper and said “This is even better than I thought.  I knew it would be high, but Wow!”

Denny and Jeff left, and Mrs. T. said, “Linda, what are you doing tomorrow for lunch?  I have asked Anita, Mrs. Lincoln, and Mandy to lunch.  We’ll pick you up at 11:30.”

Mrs. T. turned to me and said, “Jack, you tell Jeff not to worry about the second party on Saturday.  Tell him the first party is his problem, and I’ll take care of the second one.  He just needs to worry about the gifts.  Here give this to him.  It tells him what I am going to give the guys.”

Mrs. T., Josh and Ben left and Mr. Cross asked, “Beau, would you get Eddie for me?

“Yes sir.” He said, as he left and came back with Eddie.  As the Crosses were leaving Beau said, “See you tomorrow night Doodle.  Chipper will be here at 7:00.  You are really going to like him.”

Eddie hugged Beau and the Crosses left.

Meanwhile on the way to the Johnson house, Denny told Jeff what happened in Mr. Cross’ English class.  “Mr. Cross almost passed out when I handed in a written assignment for the first time, and then again when I had a book to read.  What was funnier was that Mickey and I both had The DaVinci Code to read.”

“We were reading when he called me to the desk.  He looked at me and asked ‘Did you write this by yourself?’ I told him I wrote it last night, after we got home from Omaha.”

“‘Did anyone help you?’” he asked.

“No, I showed it to my parents, but they didn’t make any changes.” I assured him.

“‘Is this about real people?’ was his next question.”

“'I met them yesterday for the first time.'”  "I was getting confused" said Denny.

“‘Would you read it to the class please?’” asked Mrs. Cross.

I shrugged my shoulders and he announced, “‘Class, I want you to listen to one of the most interesting pieces of writing I have ever received from an eighth grader.’”

“I read my paper and when I read the last sentence, ‘Yes, today is the first day of the rest of my life.’ The class applauded.”

“I sat down and started to read again when Mr. Cross called Mickey and me up to his desk.  ‘Did you guys talk about what you were going to write because it sure sounds like you are talking about the same people?’”

“Mickey said, ‘Sir, we were talking about the same people.  I wrote my paper while I was babysitting on Saturday.  I hadn’t shown it to anyone or discussed it with anyone.  I also didn’t know Denny until Sunday, and know that Denny didn’t even start his paper until we got back from Omaha, and I haven’t seen him since then.’”

“Mickey stopped to breathe and continued, ‘Now that I have heard Denny’s wonderful paper, I can tell you that we were talking about the same people.  You will have to come to Doctor Wilson’s house to meet them since they all live there.’”

“Thanks for sharing, Denny.  Now how about if we visit with your parents for a minute?” Jeff asked.

They went in and Denny summoned his parents.  After greetings, Jeff got right to what he had in mind.  “Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, we are having Beau tested by Mr. Sanders at the school, to see where he stands academically, and where he needs tutoring.  Why don’t you arrange for Denny to be tested at the same time, and then we will see what kind of damage control we can arrange?”

“Are you talking about Mr. Sanders who is a counselor?” asked Mr. Johnson.

“Yes.” said Jeff.

Mr. Johnson went to the phone and dialed, “Good evening Justin.  This is Casey Johnson.”  They visited for a short time and then Mr. Johnson said, “I understand that you are administering a test to check Beau Benson’s academic skills tomorrow.  We were wondering if you could do our son at the same time, since they are friends, and the same age.  We could have him come to your office when it is time for the test.”

“Hey, thanks, tell your lovely wife I’ll see her tomorrow.”  Mr. Johnson said as he hung up.

Mr. Johnson returned to the group and asked. “What time does Denny have to be where?”

“I told Mr. Sanders that I would have Beau at his office at 3:45.”  Jeff answered.

“Do you know where Mr. Sanders’ office is, Denny?” his Dad asked.

“Yep, I’ll meet everyone there at 3:45.”  Denny said.

“I need to go.” Jeff said, as he turned to Denny and said, “Don’t let them get you down Mr. Menace.”  He pulled Denny close and gave him a big hug.

When Jeff came in the door, Beau accosted him and said, “You sure had a lot of phone calls.  We tried to get as much information as possible.  He handed the messages to Jeff.

Jeff looked through them and then called those that were long distance.  “Hi Grandma.  What can I do for you?  I understand you will be coming this weekend  … Well it looks like it is going to be a birthday of wheels and I’m out of ideas … See you on Friday or Saturday.  Love you.”

He called another number and said, “Hi, this Jeff Wilson, I understand that Frankie called … Hi Frankie … Yeah, it’s going to be a party for five.  Four of the guys are going to be eleven and the other will be five … It appears that it’s going to be a birthday of wheels  ... Taken … Taken … Taken … Taken … Not taken but costly … Looking forward to meeting you and Kent this weekend.”

Jeff hung up and before he could return any more calls, the phone rang.  “Hi Chris … Of course we would love to meet Cheryl and Todd … Okay, see you tomorrow.”

Jeff came and sat down and said, “I’m exhausted.  I’m going to bed.  We got up and locked up and went upstairs.  Beau was lying on our bed, reading. When he saw us he got up and said, “I’ll see you tomorrow.” and he disappeared.

We took a quick shower and climbed into bed. We had just crawled into bed when Beau came in and jumped on us and kissed us both, and left.

That night we took the liberty of slowly making love, Jeff, after much preparation, very slowly penetrated me so there was minimal pain.  There was nothing rushed about what we did.  When Jeff, started to release his essence in me, I exploded.  When we came down from our high, Jeff pulled away and returned with two wet warm wash cloths and cleaned the residue from our bodies.  He crawled back into bed and gave me a very loving kiss.  “Thanks for being here for me, while everything is moving so fast.”

He went out.  How he can go to sleep like that I’ll never understand?

To be continued...
