CHAPTER TWO

~~~ THE CARDINAL DIRECTIONS ~~~

Let's now take a look at Diagram #2. You will find the Cardinal Directions in the exact opposite positions than you would find on your trusty road map or atlas. This is not done in error, and will be explained as we go along.

Diagram #2 represents the starting point of a so-called Natural Chart, in so far as Astrology is concerned. An Astrological Chart is a Celestial Map which shows the positions of the Sun, the Moon, and the known planets at a given time and location as viewed from the Earth, which is represented by the very center of the Circle, also known by some groups as the Wheel of Karma.

During this present Civilization to inhabit Earth (there have been either four or five different Civilizations prior to our present one, according to various sources), the Human conscious development has primarily taken place in the Northern Hemisphere, and through the centuries, all Astrological information has been geared from this perspective.

In order to observe the orbital paths of the planets (which includes the Sun and the Moon, for ease of terminology), we in the Northern Hemisphere must face South; therefore, South is upward or at the top of the chart. Those of us in the Southern Hemisphere must face north in order to observe the orbital paths of the planets; therefore, their Astrological Charts are drawn with North at the top of the Chart and South at the bottom; East will be to the right, and West will be to the left. Either way you look at the Charts, it's just an appearance after all.

Now, remember this … you, being on Planet Earth, are in the very center of the chart no matter in which Hemisphere you're located at any given moment.

The horizontal line extending across the Chart from East to West is said to represent the Horizon, with everything above the Horizon to be in the daylight hours (or visible sky), and everything below the Horizon to be in the nighttime hours (or hidden sky), depending on the purpose and time of the observation.).

Another way of looking at the Chart is as a 24-hour clock, with approximately 6:00 a.m. being at the East, approximately Noon being at the top, approximately 6:00 p.m. being at the West, and approximately Midnight being at the bottom.

Now that that is clearly understood, I'd like to continue with my thoughts on the Law of Harmony and Order.

Mr. Edgar Cayce (pronounced "KAY-see"), America's leading psychic and clairvoyant during the mid-20th Century, found that by working with the Natural energies of the Cardinal Directions, the information which came through his "readings" was much more accurate than when he worked against those same energies.

To quote from Edgar Cayce's Story of Jesus, by Jeffrey Furst, 1968, page 14:

"The first step in giving a reading is this: I loosen my clothes – my shoelaces, my necktie, my shirt cuffs, and my belt – in order to have a perfectly free-flowing circulation.

"Then I lie down on the couch in my office. If the reading is to be a physical one, I lie with my head to the South and my feet to the North. If it is to be a life reading, it is just the opposite: my feet are to the South, my head to the North. The reason for this difference in 'polarization,' as the readings themselves call it, I do not know." (Words italicized by this author.)

This information adapts perfectly well with what is called a Natural Chart.

For a physical reading (regarding physical health conditions), Cayce would lie with his head to the South. Now, according to Diagram #2, to the South is Capricorn, an Earth Sign; and in Astrology, Earth Signs relate to the physical person, the physical body, and the physical conditions. He was unknowingly working in Harmony with Natural energies.

For a life reading (regarding past-life information and Karmic conditions carried over into the present life-time), Cayce would lie with his head to the North. Now, according to Diagram #2, to the North is Cancer, a Water Sign; and in Astrology, Water Signs relate to the soul records, the psychic nature, and the astral counterpart to Life. Again, he was unknowingly working in Harmony with Natural energies.

In the New Testament book of Galatians, Chapter 6, Verse 7, we find, "… whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." The Hindu language has one word which in essence is identical with these nine words which were just quoted, and that one word is Karma. One's reapings, one's rewards, one's Karma, whether good or bad, positive or negative, pleasant or painful – do not always manifest within a given lifetime.

Think for a moment: why is one child born a prodigy, while another is born grossly deformed; why is one born into severe poverty, while another is born into extreme riches; why is one born into a loving family, while another is born to an unknown father and to a mother who drops the infant into a garbage can? Mere chance? I don't believe so.

Through proper training and disciplines, we can learn to work with the Natural energies of the North and discover the Karmic reasons for the seemingly injustices around us.

I do wander around don't I? But then, I am a 'Happy Wanderer'. Now, back to the Cardinal Directions.

After discovering these exciting correlations, I carried it a step further, because I knew that if working with these two Cardinal Directions could bring about accurate results, then the other two Cardinal Directions could be used with equally accurate results insofar as their Natural energies are concerned.

I'm sure that everyone who has even a very slight interest in Metaphysics knows that the ancient Mystics were in the habit of rising early and making their morning meditations toward the Aton, the Rising Sun, on the Eastern Horizon. This, too, agrees with Diagram #2, for we find that to the East is Aries, a Fire Sign; and in Astrology, Fire Signs relate to Spirituality, Inspiration, and Vitality. But I'm sure that the ancient Mystics were KNOWINGLY working in Harmony with Natural energies.

Not having much information concerning the West to fall back on, I took it upon myself to discern its importance.

According to Diagram #2, to the West is Libra, an Air Sign; and according to Astrology, Air Signs relate to Mentality, Consciousness, and Communication (mental qualities, though frequently, Communication is silently sub-conscious or telepathic).

It occurred to me, that in order to achieve accurate, practical results in applying the Natural energies of the West, it would be advisable for those people who consciously desire to learn from either written material (i.e., books, magazines, newspapers, the Internet, etc.) or from other people (i.e., lecturers, teachers, clergy, etc.), to face West, if at all possible while reading or listening. In theory, these people would be much more mentally receptive to that which is being offered. Conversely, those speakers, teachers, and others (i.e., salespersons, instructors, parents) will find it much more beneficial to face East while delivering their message because in doing so, they will find greater continuity of thought through being inspired to say what is truly needed to be heard by the audience or listener.

Think of the most beautiful Cathedral, Church, Synagogue, Mosque, or Temple that you've ever been in … wasn't the grandest, most beautiful stained glass window behind the clergy? And wasn't the Sun shining through the window during those morning hours of worship? You were perhaps bathed in the glorious light, and you were tremendously inspired during those early hours and the clergy spoke eloquently—but how long did the impact of the message stay with you? You were facing East and the speaker was facing West.

But if the window were behind you, and if the Sun were shining through it onto the speaker, then what was said may not have been quite so eloquent, but it probably had great inspirational meaning for you as it sank down into your 'mental heart' and stayed with you for some time. Just think about it.

From my own personal experiments, I have found equally accurate results whether I am facing a direction or lying with my head toward that direction.

Many Metaphysicians have strongly encouraged everyone they know to sleep with the head to the North, and now we can understand why. Again, to the North is Cancer, a Water Sign, and Water relates to the Soul, Psychic, Astral, and Karmic nature. When lying with the head to the North, we find that we are working in Harmony with the Natural energies of the North, which facilitate Astral Projection, Astral Travel, Out-of-Body experiences, etc.

Now, some schools-of-thought say that to the North is the realm of "Wisdom," and I am in perfect agreement. Do not confuse "Wisdom" with "Knowledge" for they are two entirely different matters! "Wisdom" is a Soul quality, and "knowledge" is a Mental quality.

Many people are quite aware that during sleep, their Spirit Guides, Teachers, Masters, Guardian Angels, or other benevolent entities accompany them in psychic, spiritual, soul, out-of-body "trips;" and many even attend sessions in one or more of the various Mystery Schools. It is during these counseling sessions in which we attain some degree of "Wisdom." Whether we are consciously aware of it or not, upon arising from physical sleep, matters little to the Higher Self, for during the course of our waking hours, the "Wisdom" will stream forth a hunches, benevolent attitudes, and frequently as beneficial changes in habits or desires.

When the physical body is extremely tired, sore, or uncomfortable, it is therefore advisable to lie with the head to the South, so that the Natural Physical energies can do their healing work. Now, when hospitals start using this information, they will find rapid healings. If they carry it into the operating rooms, the surgeon will face East with the patient lying with the head to the South, and it will be found that there will be fewer surgical accidents and mistakes!

This information can be used in any field of endeavor, and when city planners, architects, construction workers, interior designers, et al, begin massively applying this information, it will be found that peaceful, harmonious communities will develop, and Mankind will once again begin to live IN HARMONY WITH NATURE.

One of my teachers taught me: "As you expect … so you direct."

Six little words. Think about them.
