Richard and Troy hurried to their quarters, and packed their bags. When they went out the door to get into the awaiting jeep, they were shocked to see all the men at the base and many of the villagers as well, lined up, standing on both sides of the road, the service men and women at attention. As they drove to the airfield, the men in the army saluted, and the villagers waved. Someone had made a banner that said “God Bless You Both.”

And so, Richard and Troy, their hearts heavy with sadness, but grateful to their comrades-in-arms, and their friends in the village for this last gesture, boarded the plane, and soon were headed for Baltimore.

Part 10

When the plane touched down at BWI Airport, Richard and Troy were allowed to leave the plane first. As they came into the airport’s waiting area, they saw Papa Vidmark, and Nathan and Joshua. The two-year-olds were jumping up and down.

“Papa!” “Unca Troy!”  They shouted as they ran toward the two men, holding out their arms to be picked up and held. They both ran to Richard who hugged them, and kissed them, and held them tightly for a minute. They turned to Troy, who hugged them, and picked them up one at a time, and put each one on a shoulder.

Richard walked towards his Papa who held out his arms to his son. “Oh, Papa! What can I . . . ?” Richard broke down and sobbed. Papa was crying too, and the two men just held each other and mourned the loss of the woman who had been the steadfast rock of love and courage and determination in both their lives.

As they calmed down, Richard became aware of another man standing there. “Captain McCleary! It’s good to see you, but  . . .?”

“Richard, I know you are anxious to get home as quickly as possible, so I talked to your father and I have arranged transport.” Turning to the two lads, Captain McCleary smiled and said, “How would you two like to ride in a police car?”

“Plice car?” asked Nathan. “With sirens?” asked Joshua.

“Well, maybe not a siren, but flashing lights,” Captain McCleary smiled.

Coming out of the terminal, Richard saw a motorcycle rider in front of two police cars, and a motorcycle rider behind the last car. The two boys were put in safety seats, and rode with their Grandpa. Richard and Troy got in a car with Captain McCleary, and with lights flashing (but no sirens), the motorcade left the airport, drove north on U.S  295, and then turned on to Hamburg Street, and from there drove to Haubert Street.

While they were riding Captain McCleary said, “We’ll talk later, but I’ve gotten very good reports about you from your C.O., and I am proud of how well you have done . . ." and turning to Troy he said. “ . . . and I’ve heard some very good things about you, too, Captain Hunter, but we’ll talk later.”

The car pulled up in front of the Vidmark house, and everyone got out. Richard and his father thanked all the drivers and Captain McCleary, and went into the house.

The next two days passed by in a blur. There was visitation at the funeral home, and then there was the funeral at Martini Lutheran Church.

At the end of the service, Papa, Richard, Troy, and Nathan and Joshua walked behind the coffin as it as taken to the hearse. They rode in the limousine to Loudon Park Cemetery on Frederick Road, and stood as the service of committal was read.

As Joshua and Nathan watched, everyone at the ceremony had solemn eyes. Joshua asked his father, “Papa, if Grandma is in Heaven, why is everyone so sad?”

“Because we will miss her, even though we know she is safe in Heaven. She doesn’t hurt any more. She doesn’t have any aches or pains. She’s at peace . . ."  Richard couldn’t say anymore. He just knelt down and held his two sons as tightly as he could. Troy was also in tears, and it was Papa Vidmark who held him and comforted him.

Back at the church, the women of the church had prepared a meal where the family could talk and meet the friends who had come to pay their respects to the family.

As the reception began to come to an end, Captain McCleary came up to Richard and Troy, and said, “ Gentlemen, I know this has been a hard day, but I have something to propose before I leave. Richard, I have heard such glowing reports of how you conducted yourself in England, I want to offer you a job—not your old job as a policeman, but a job as Captain of a division that will investigate cases involving serious crime. Do you think you might be interested?”

“Oh, Captain, it’s a little hard to take it in right now, can I think about it?”

“Of course you can. Come and see me on Monday morning. . . .  And Captain Hunter, I have heard very good things about you also. I wonder if you would you be interested in a position with the Baltimore City Police Department? There is a position open as a Lieutenant. You would be acting as secretary and aide to one of our newly hired captains. Might you be interested in the job?”

“Yes, sir, I think I would be. I definitely would be!”

“Good. Then you come and see me on Monday morning also. Gentlemen, I hope I’ll see you both on Monday.” Captain McCleary shook both their hands, said goodbye to Papa Vidmark, and suddenly found two lollipops in his coat pocket, which he presented with great ceremony to Masters Joshua and Nathan Vidmark, and was rewarded with two hugs.

“You make our Poppa happy?” said Joshua.

“I hope so, little ones. I do hope so!” And so, Captain McCleary, five-foot-ten, sandy-haired and blue-eyed, left the church hall, saying a silent prayer of thanks that his plan for the ‘reclamation’ of Richard Vidmark had borne good fruit.

When the family and Troy got back to the house, Richard and Troy put the boys in bed for the night. They came downstairs to find Papa taking pillows, pillowcases, sheets and blankets into a first floor guest room.

“Papa, what are you doing?” Richard asked.

“My boy, for over thirty years your Momma and I shared the bed upstairs. Now that she is gone, I do not want to sleep in that bed alone any more. Now that you and Troy are home, you can have the two bedrooms upstairs, and you will be near the boys if they wake in the night. I have put new sheets and blankets on the bed in the main bedroom, and I think Troy will be comfortable in what was your sister’s bedroom.”

Richard looked at Troy with a question in his eyes, and Troy gave a slight nod. Richard took Troy’s hand and said, “Papa, I think there is something you should know. While we were in England, Troy and I came to realize that we cared for each other very deeply—more than just as good friends or as brothers. We . . . “

Papa smiled, and said, “Say no more, my son, my dear son. Your Mama and I suspected something like this. We have come to regard Troy almost as another son. If you two care for each other, I am happy for you. I don’t want to know any more than that, and the only thing I can say is, Troy, I welcome you as a loving member of the family. I know that you love my grandsons, and I bless you for the happiness you have brought to Richard.”

Papa gave Troy a loving hug, and then gave Richard a hug also.

Papa cleared his throat, and said, “Now, I understand from Captain McCleary that you both are being offered jobs—good jobs—with the Police Department. I will be able to take care of the boys during the day, so you don’t have to worry about them. If I spoil them a little, well, that is a grandfather’s privilege.”

Night fell on the house, a house filled with some sadness, but also with a lot of love, and hopes for a brighter tomorrow.

The years passed. Richard and Troy did well in their jobs and were liked by all the men at their station. If anyone ever suspected that they were more than good friends, they never let on or said or did anything.

Papa Vidmark loved taking care of his two grandsons. When they were five they were enrolled in kindergarten. At six they went to the first grade at Francis Scott Key Elementary-Junior High School.

Nathan and Joshua went through elementary and junior high school. In the summer time they loved to go swimming in the pool at Riverside Park. One day in the changing room, Nathan said, “Hey, Josh, look! I’m getting hair down there.”

Joshua replied, “Big deal, bro. Papa said we would. But I’ve discovered something else. I’ll tell you about it tonight.”

Later that night, the two lads were getting ready for bed. The grown ups were downstairs.

Joshua came out of the bathroom dressed only in his briefs. He took them off, and stood in front of his brother and began to stroke his little penis. It quickly became hard, and after a few more strokes, a bead of pearly white  liquid appeared .

“Cool!” said Nathan. “Can I touch it?”

“Sure.”

Nathan began to touch and then to stroke Joshua’s tool.  This went on for several nights, and Joshua got harder more and more quickly. One night, while Nathan was masturbating him, Joshua felt a strange tingling in his toes, then in his testicles, and all at once a gob of white stuff came out.

“AAAaaaahhhhh! Oooohhhhh!”

Nathan said, “Oh, bro, that’s neat. What does it feel like?’

“Like nothing else in this world! It’s great!  . . . Look, Nate, let me see if I can get you to shoot white stuff too.”  Joshua began to stroke his brother and soon, very soon, Nathan also experienced his first ejaculation.

Every night the two brothers touched and caressed and stroked each other’s penis. Every night, they shot their hot teenage cream onto their bellies, their chests, their hands. One night Nathan said, “I wonder what it tastes like.”

“I wonder too,” said Joshua. “I guess there’s only one way to find out.” With that he knelt down in front of Nathan and proceeded to lick his brother’s cum. “Ummm! Not bad,” was his comment.

“My turn, Josh.” And Nathan proceeded to lick his brother’s boner bone dry.

The two brothers matured physically and emotionally. When they were in high school, they attended Baltimore City College (actually a high school), known to its students, teachers, and alumni as the Castle on the Hill.

Both boys liked track and swimming, and they did well on both teams. When they were in the showers they found that they liked looking at the naked bodies of the other students, but nothing took the place of their enjoyment at home, looking at, and then touching, and then exploring each other’s bodies.

When they were in their senior year, they realized that not only did they enjoy having sex together, but also that they truly loved each other and wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.

The boys thought they might enroll in Baltimore Community College while they decided what they wanted to do with their lives. Their Papa approved of this plan and never ceased being proud of his sons for their warm sunny nature, their love for each other. He had wondered why they hadn’t shown much interest in girls, but he had his suspicions that their hormones were driving them in the other direction.

One Saturday evening, Papa Vidmark complained of feeling a little tired. He went to bed early. The next morning, Richard found him lying in his bed, holding a picture of Mama and with a smile on his face. Papa Vidmark had gone to join his dear wife. Richard and Troy were shocked. Papa Vidmark had never complained of feeling sick. He wasn’t overweight. He got exercise. He didn’t have high blood pressure.

Richard held up (like a true Viking) while they called the doctor, and then the undertaker, but later that evening, he broke down.

“Why? Why?” Richard sobbed as Troy held him tightly.

“Richard, my love, we don’t know why these things happen. We can only be happy that your—our—Papa didn’t have some long drawn out illness that caused him pain. He didn’t suffer and now he’s with Mama.”

“I know, Troy, but it’s just so . . .  hard . . .”

“I know. I loved him too. He and your Mama accepted me into the family, and he accepted our love for each other. He was wonderful. He was  . . . “

Now it was Richard’s turn to hold Troy. The two men comforted each other. Then they heard loud wracking sobs coming from the boys’ room. They went to the door, knocked and went in.

Nathan and Joshua were lying in each other’s arms, both crying, and both holding each other, and both were completely naked.

Hearing the door open, they turned and saw their two Dads standing there.

“Dads, we didn’t hear you come upstairs. . . .,” Joshua began.

“We were just comforting each other. Granddad’s death . . . “

“I know, my boys, Troy and I both know how you feel.”

Nathan and Joshua stood up, and took each other’s hand. “Dads, I guess you better know that we . . . that we . . .  that we love each other, in every sense of the word,” Joshua said.

“Troy and I have suspected as much for some time. All I can say is, love each other deeply, and act responsibly. I will ALWAYS love the two of you.”

“And so will I,” said Troy.

Despite their nakedness, Nathan and Joshua moved to hug their Dads.

Richard said, “Why don’t you two put some clothes on and come downstairs, and we’ll have some of what Mama called her ‘special coffee,’ and we’ll talk.”

Richard and Troy went downstairs to make that ‘special coffee,’ and the boys got dressed, still grieving for their grandfather but comforted by the knowledge that their two dads loved them.
