Chapter 20
Marauders

On horseback, they made much faster progress on the way to Ennan than on the way to Meryem's spring. As they crossed the forest on the bank opposite Ennan's farm at dusk, a high-pitched whistle jolted Ikken from his reverie. He whispered, "Hiyya! That must be Hiyya. She must be looking for us in a tree somewhere here. Look around Aylal, somewhere she's hiding and doesn't dare to come out!"

Both of them searched the dense crowns of the trees, the undergrowth and the reeds at the edge of the path for Hiyya. In vain! KeYnNamM, riding a dozen horse lengths behind them, also searched the forest in vain, "Hiyya, Hiyya! It is us after all! Don't you recognize us because of our clothes? We are desert sons now, Imuhagh. Don't you recognize us? It is us after all, Ikken, Aylal and I, the Amestan!"

Suddenly, someone jumped from a thick branch hanging over the narrow path and landed behind Ikken on the croup of his horse. Ikken need not look around. It had to be Hiyya. He recognized her by the way she hugged him and by her smell! "Hey you! Hey Hiyya! Where have you been hiding? I couldn't find you anywhere, not in the bushes, not in the reeds, not among the branches! In the tree you disappear like a nightingale and then you swoop down on me like a hawk on a mouse! Hiyya, dear Hiyya." Aylal, who was startled for a moment when Hiyya landed on the horse behind Ikken, beamed. "Hiyya, where are Anirt and Amimt? Why didn't they come to meet us? I've been through so much!"

KeYnNamM had grasped the situation faster than Ikken and Aylal. Concerned, he asked, "What's wrong? You scared me? What's the matter? Are you guarding the way to the homestead? Are the Emperor's servants out again?" Hiyya gulped, "Not them! Areksim's mercenaries are roaming the valley, raiding the villages and farms! They burned down the village where my relatives live. Now they all live with us, all aunts, uncles, all cousins! Then she added, "And their cattle are there, too."

"We didn't meet any mercenaries on the way to you, nothing unusual either. There should be no danger from this side of the river tonight. Will you go back to your hiding place or will you ride with Ikken and Aylal to your farm? Do that, I'll relieve you here!"

"You don't need to, Amestan. Father needs you more on the farm. When it gets dark, one of my cousins will relieve me. You know, during the day the younger ones watch, in the early evening the older cousins and at night the men. We guard all three entrances to the homestead!"

Ennand and Ayri were happy when the Amestan appeared so unexpectedly with Aylal and Ikken. "Amestan! We were worried Amestan! The mercenaries of Areksim returned defeated, but you didn't show up KeYnNamM, nor did Ikken and Aylal. Nobody knew where you are, if you are healthy, if you are alive! Even your friends, the Imuhagh, remained missing." Ayri greeted him. "But the beaten mercenaries did come back, you should have known that the desert sons beat the governor's troops." KeYnNamM replied. "But you did not come, only the mercenaries, the cursed marauders! They raid, rob, rape, kill!" scolded Ayri now, "No sooner had they crossed the border into No-One’s-Land than their raids began."

"The desert has beaten them! They told, not the desert king and his Imuhagh. They arrived hungry and we people of the Draa gave them food and water! But what did they do? As soon as they regained their strength their raids began, their murders!" Ennan supported account of his wife.  "We thought they would return to the Empire defeated and scatter to the winds!" KeYnNamM apologized.  "They would have, but!" Ennan puffed indignantly, "They would have, but they were afraid, afraid of the governor! He had the heads of the first ones who came back cut off! Cowards they were for him, traitors, homeless fellows! Many of the former mercenaries are now afraid and prefer life as marauders to death!"

Meanwhile, Ennan's relatives had gathered around the three, brothers, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, and a great number of children, more than two dozen in all. The eldest of them began to tell of the mercenaries' raids. "The first mercenaries still bought the goats from us. The next ones simply broke into the pens and took the fattest animals. And the last ones came and set the village on fire from three sides. We fought our way out and then moved here on sneaky paths. Luckily, after the first raid, we had hidden our animals in the forest and were able to bring them with us."

"It's not just us!" added another, "We hear similar things from all along the Wadi Draa. Look Amestan, look! We've turned this homestead into a fortified castle, and we guard the entrances day and night, the ones from the river, the ones across the gallery forest, the ones along the paths and secret trails."

"Thank God!" an old woman kissed KeYnNamM's hand, "Thank God you're back Amestan! If you take command of No-One’s-Land all will be well!"

Anirt and Amimt, the twins, had immediately taken Aylal to their hiding place behind the brick stable. There they began to question him curiously. They wanted to know everything, especially if the girls at the Imuhagh were pretty, if he had fallen in love with one of them.  As Aylal began to talk about Tarit's three wives, they wondered why he had three wives and their father only one! "We don't want two mothers, or even three!" they immediately explained. "We only need one to love!" "But Tamimt, Dihya and Lunja are lovely. They allowed me to do what I wanted and I always got sweets."

Hiyya also wanted to be alone with Ikken. She took him by the hand "I have to show you something!" and pulled him behind the bushes at the edge of the forest. There out of sight she hugged him tightly, "Oh Ikken, my Ikken. Do you still love me? Do you love me as I love you?" He thought for a moment of Yufayyur, who also asked this question when they had been apart for only an hour. Ikken thought of his friend and immediately remembered what he had asked him when they parted: "You have to stay in practice when we are apart! Therfore he gave in to Hiyya, pulled her to him and began to caress her. Then he pulled her to the ground and began to kiss her as Yufayyur had taught him. Hiyya was happy and could have gone on like this for a long time, but then they heard her mother calling and they had to go back to the farm. On the way, Ikken asked, "Who taught you to kiss like that? Your kisses are sweeter than sweet! Don't tell me you were born with it!"

"My cousin Tanan!" was Hiyya's honest answer, "But you kiss much better than him. Better than the other cousins who tried to kiss me, too!" Then she whispered conspiratorially. "Just wait until tonight!"

The situation was too worrisome for a celebration, but a small feast was necessary. A goat was slaughtered and while the young lads set off to their guard posts, grumbling, the adults and children gathered around the fire over which the goat roasted. KeYnNamM and his sons were given the places of honor and KeYnNamM's return was a detailed account of the battles against the governor's mercenaries. Soon Aylal's eyes fell shut and Ikken carried his little brother into the house.

The house was crowded. The rooms that were usually shared by five now had to accommodate more than a dozen guests. As Ikken carried his brother into the house, Hiyya followed him and showed him where the place was reserved for Aylal, between the twins. Then she pulled him to the other side of the dark room.

Hiyya also shared her bed with her cousins. She pressed herself into the farthest corner, pulled Ikken to her and immediately began kissing him. Ikken was tired, but not so tired that his body did not react. First, he kissed, then he began to carefully scan Hiyya. Her body felt different from Yufayyur's, rounder, softer, just different. Where his friend's rough skin tightly hugged the hard arm muscles, Hiyya's could easily be shifted, though her arm muscles were almost as strong as his friend's. After a moment's hesitation, Ikken pushed Hiyya's loose shirt up, searching for the navel. It was hidden in a pit and did not protrude like Yufayyur's. With his index finger he poked curiously into the hole, whereupon Hiyya began to giggle. His hands slid higher. Hiyya's breasts were still small, but when he rubbed one of her nipples between his thumb and forefinger, it became long, hard and pointed. He groped for the other. It, too, had become hard. Hiyya turned on her back now, and while he kissed her, he slipped his hand inside her pants and searched the gap between her legs. At first, she pressed her thighs tightly together. But when he began to stroke the inside of her thighs, she spread them and Ikken could touch the soft labia with his fingertips.

This was something new! Her labia were like little soft pillows, tender and moist. With his index finger he tried to penetrate the gap between them. She flinched at first, but then opened her legs wider and allowed him to push his finger deep into the gap. The cavity was hot and wet from a slippery liquid. Its walls covered with puckers and throbbed. Ikken tried to feel each bulge and pucker. He was aroused, his member hard, twitching in rhythm with his heartbeat, eager to enter the hot cavern. When he withdrew his hand for a moment, Hiyya suddenly turned to the side, but not moving away from him. She suddenly pressed her soft bottom against his hard member. Ikken knew this. He had always rubbed his hard member back and forth in the furrow between Yufayyur hard buttocks before penetrating him. Now, too, he began plowing the narrow furrow. But even before his penis found the small butt opening, Hiyya reached behind her, grabbed his penis and guided it to its destination.

Hiyya must have expected what followed. She had made her hole slippery with mutton fat and when he now tried to penetrate, she pushed her butt towards him. At first, he didn't succeed, but then, after a few thrusts, he overcame the resistance and his member penetrated Hiyya quite deeply. Ikken took a deep breath and then considered whether it Hiyyas’ hole felt different than on Yufayyur. He found it was just as nice, warm and tight as his. That's when he started thrusting rhythmically and Hiyya joined in every movement.

Suddenly someone pushed up behind him, put an arm and him and Hiyya and pressed a kiss on his ear. Ikken startled, almost slipping his member out of the warm hole, but then a boy's voice said, "Isn't Hiyya good? I taught her. But she doesn't love me, she always fantasized about you." At the same time Ikken felt that the other was trying to penetrate him.  Now he remembered. It had to be Tanan, Hiyya's cousin, who had been staring at him all evening. Then, when a seat had become available next to him, he had sat down beside him, put his arm around his shoulders and called him brother. Now Hiyya's cousin snuggled up close to him and skillfully penetrated him, taking advantage of Ikken's thrusts into Hiyya. For a moment Ikken was disturbed by the unexpected penetration, but then they found a steady rhythm that all three enjoyed. When they finally came to rest exhausted, Ikken was proud of the new experience, which he had to tell Yufayyur about.
