Chapter 8
Harcourt Hall
The helicopter touched down on the landing pad at Harcourt Hall exactly at four. Dirk asked, "What would you like my staff to do with that large crate, Shaun?"
"Have them put it in my suite, for now."
"Fine; why don't you change into something more comfortable, and meet me in the library? I usually spend a couple of hours playing with the little ones in the nursery before dinner."
"Would you mind taking me on a quick tour of the first floor before we visit your brood?" Shaun asked.
"It would be my pleasure," Dirk said with a smile.
"We have connecting suites," he said, as he led Shaun to his bedroom suite. The butler was waiting for them when they walked into the suite.
"Robert, this is Dr. Spalding," Dirk said. "He is going to need some help with his packing box."
"I'll see that everything is taken care of, Mr. Harcourt," Robert said.
"I'll leave you in Robert's capable hands," Dirk said. "See you in the library after you finish up here."
Shaun assembled the easel and with Robert's help, he removed the oil painting from its carrying case and set it on the easel. Shaun did not remove the protective covering from the painting until after Robert left. He went about the business of attaching the light bars to the painting and adjusted the spots until he had the effect he wanted. Satisfied with the results, he turned off the lights and covered the oil. He quickly changed to slacks and a button-down shirt with a crew neck sweater, and met Dirk in the library. Shaun spotted the ideal spot for his painting as he toured the main rooms of the mansion.
"Gosh, this is a beautiful home and the oil paintings are priceless," Shaun said. "Would you mind if I browsed around later? I would like to take the time to observe those paintings. They are magnificent."
"You have the free run of the house," Dirk said. "Are you ready to visit the nursery?"
"I'll be brave, let's charge ahead."
Dirk laughed, "Don't be alarmed, they are very sweet children."
When they entered the nursery, four young children were sitting on the floor playing a game. They all turned and smiled. The two little girls screamed "Daddy, Daddy," and ran over to Shaun.
Shaun bent down and took them into his arms and held them, "They said you were in heaven, and you would never return." Shaun calmed them down and said, "Look, sweetheart, take another good look at me."
They backed away a little and looked into his face and said, "Do you still hurt from your accident?"
"No, sweetheart, I'm not hurt. Why don't you show Uncle Dirk and me the game you were playing when we came in?"
They each took his hand and explained the game they were playing with Dirk's two boys. Shaun sat down next to them. "Now explain the game to me."
He looked over at Dirk and smiled, "This is an interesting game," Shaun said. "But, off the top of my head, I think I'll play his step-brother. I think they'll accept that."
"Step-brother would be appropriate," Dirk said.
"Children," Dirk said. "You did not give me the chance to properly introduce you to Uncle Shaun, now I want you all to greet him properly."
Beth and Molly said, "No! Uncle Dirk, he is our Daddy; tell him that's so, Daddy."
"I'm sorry to disappoint you, but your uncle Dirk is right," Shaun said. "Your daddy was my step-brother. Many people think we look alike. Now, why don't you finish your game?"
Molly started to cry and said, "I don't want to play the silly game anymore."
Shaun took the two girls over to their play table and sat down with them. He talked to them for a long time.
Dirk could see they were listening to everything he said and nodding their heads. They would look over at Dirk, then back at Shaun. They each hugged him and ran to a cabinet for their drawing materials and brought them back to him. Shaun made them each a little cartoon character and told them to try to copy the same character. After a little while, they had forgotten all about Brett. Naturally, the twins, Brett and Dirk, Jr., were not going to be left out, so Shaun had to make a drawing for each of them as well. The children became very animated and argued over who was the best at drawing and forgot all about Shaun.
Shaun left them to their drawing and walked over to where Dirk was seated.
"I've got to hand it to you," Dirk said. "You know how to handle children. What were you telling the girls? I don't want any surprises."
"I explained the reason they mistook me for their Dad and that you were their Daddy now," Shaun said. "I told them they should listen to you because you would never lie to them and that you loved them very much, that's pretty much it."
"You do have a natural way with children then," Dirk said. "How are you with dogs?"
"They hate me as much as the children do."
The governess came into the room and winked at Dirk and said, "Its dinner time children," and led them down to the breakfast room where their table was set for dinner. After eating dinner, they returned to the playroom and Dirk read them a story. At six the governess said, "Well, children, it's time to get ready for bed, say good night to your daddy and your Uncle Shaun."
They all got up, hugged Dirk, and kissed him good night, then the girls hugged and kissed Shaun, the boys just said goodnight and took off.
"Where are your older children?" Shaun asked.
"The girls are with Mother, they have more fun with her," Dirk said. "The three of them never stop chattering about the silliest things. Like the latest fashions, boys, gossip, you know, girl talk. I can only take so much of it. Why don't we change for dinner and we can have our cocktails in the drawing room when you're ready?"
Shaun returned to his suite and moved the painting again and arranged the room lighting. This painting was a full-length portrait of Brett. It portrayed him as the young dashing executive with a stylized skyline of Manhattan in the background.
Shaun dimmed all the other lighting in the room so only the lit portrait dominated the sitting room. Satisfied with the effect he covered the painting again and turned off the lights and walked into the bathroom. He showered and dressed into his casual attire for dinner, gray flannel slacks, blue oxford button-down shirt with his striped school tie, a light wool blue blazer and his black loafers.
Molly and Dirk were having cocktails when he arrived.
"I'm happy you could join us this weekend, Shaun. Won't you have a something to drink?"
"A glass of wine would be delightful, thank you."
"I can see how my granddaughters would mistake you for Brett. You bear a striking resemblance to him," Molly said. "If I had not met you at the gallery yesterday, I would have been a little unnerved when you walked into this room tonight.
"I understand your drawings made a hit with my grandchildren."
"I've had a lot of practice working with small children during my teaching days," Shaun said. "They are so delightful to be around, don't you think?"
"Yes, I do," said Molly. "I hope you are a good sailor, Shaun, because from all reports the weather is going to be ugly tomorrow."
"I was quite a good sailor, years ago," Shaun said. "I had a lot of practice in prep school. As a matter of fact, that was the only way I found to escape the confines of dorms. I volunteered in every sport that had to do with the water. I started with the swimming team, then to waterskiing, sculling, and finally sailing. I worked hard at every event until I became team captain and held that position throughout college."
Dirk tells me your doctorate is in computer sciences, and that you were also a university Professor at one time," Molly said. "I'm curious as to why you would give that all up to become a painter?"
"Again, that goes back to my prep-school days," Shaun said. "I didn't know what I wanted to study in college, so my guidance councilor gave me a series of tests to determine the ideal career path for me. All the tests indicated I had a strong scientific and mathematical aptitude. So it was concluded that my best choice was to major in Computer Science. Needless to say, I was not entirely happy in that field."
"I started to take a few art classes to fill in my time and became enthralled with painting. One thing led to another until I became a serious artist."
"Very interesting story," Molly said. "With two solid careers behind you, I don't think you have to worry where your next meal is coming from."
"I thought it was to be here?"
Molly chuckled, "You have a good sense of humor, to boot."
"Thank God my natural father set up a generous trust fund for me. It paid for my schooling and provided me with a modest monthly income. You see, I was born out of wedlock. Spalding is my stepfather's name. We never really got along, so it was decided that I would be happier in boarding school."
"However, my judgment of Mr. Spalding was not far off the mark," Shaun said. "He ended up gambling my mother's estate away, until all she had left was the summer home in the mountains."
"I'm convinced that all that heartache contributed to the stroke which left my mother an invalid. I borrowed heavily against my trust to renovate mother's summer home and keep a roof over our heads until I could earn a living as an artist. It wasn't too bad, because when the bank account got low, I took on some freelance computer projects to keep ahead, money wise."
"With the advanced sales and the commissions I've received from this show so far, I will be able to devote all my time to painting. Now I can afford a full time staff to care for my mother."
"Do you know who your natural father is?" Dirk asked.
"No, I never did learn who he was and at this stage in my life I don't care anymore. My mother made a promise to my father that she would never reveal his name. In return for that promise, my father set up a trust fund that took care of my education and a modest income to help support me for the rest of my life. Of course, it could have if Mr. Spalding didn't gamble my mother's fortune away.
"When I was a young child, I begged my mother to tell me who my father was," Shaun said. "It was important to me then, but mother never broke her word. She did promise me that I would know his name after her death.
"I had always hoped that maybe some day he would make the attempt to see me; after all, I was his son. As I said, before, I don't care anymore. I have the feeling that he is dead. I have often thought it would be nice to know if I had any brothers or sisters. Yet, I don't think it would have worked out anyway, a stepchild is always an outsider. I've lived with that rejection all my life; why go through that torture all over again?"
"You've had a sad life," Dirk said. "Maybe now that you are an acclaimed artist your life will change for the better."
"My life wasn't all sad. I think it made me a stronger person. My circumstances were not any different from many of the other boys in my situation. It's true; my life has improved for the better with your help, Dirk. Now I can start to use my talent and continue my painting. I can honestly say for the first time in my life, that my future looks bright."
Dirk's daughters joined them for dinner. They were charming and pretty teenagers. They were also delighted to have another attractive male joining them for dinner. Shaun was amused by their attention and allowed himself to be drawn into the harmless little game. He caught Dirk staring at him and winked at him when no one was looking his way.
After dinner, Molly and the girls excused themselves, leaving Dirk and Shaun alone in the dining room to finish their coffee and brandy. "What time do you want me to be ready in the morning?"
"I thought we could leave here around six," Dirk said. "If that's okay with you?"
"That's fine," Shaun said. "Before you turn in, I would like to give you a gift."
"How about right now," Dirk said.
They finished the last of their brandy and headed for the second floor.
"Please wait in the hall while I check on everything," Shaun said. A few seconds later Shaun opened the door to his suite and said, "You can come in now."
Dirk took in a deep breath when he saw the portrait. "My God, that is magnificent; Brett looks so real."
"I'll leave you alone. We can talk in the morning. Just turn off the lights when you're finished."
Shaun closed the connecting door to his bedroom. He changed into his pajamas and robe and sat in one of the large lounge chairs and began to sketch the children from memory. He heard a light knock on the door and he said, "Come in."
"I wanted to thank you for your gift," Dirk said. "It must have taken months to paint that portrait. You could have sold that canvas for at least 50 thousand dollars. Why did you give it to me when you knew how much I loved him?"
"Because I love you," Shaun said. "I wanted the people he loved to see him, and to remember him the way he was."
"Do you mind if we talk for a while?" Dirk asked.
"Not at all; please sit."
"The more I learned about you, the more I realize what a complex and wonderful man you are," Dirk said. "Your actions speak volumes about you. Sometimes you remind me a little of Brett, yet, you're nothing like him. You're a much stronger person and you have it all together. I'm so confused," Dirk said. "I want you."
"I know what you are feeling," Shaun said. "This is not easy for you, but you've made a good start." Shaun walked over to Dirk and bent down and took Dirk's head in between his hands and kissed him tenderly. "Who told you that life would be easy? You just have to do your best, and hope that tomorrow will be a little better than today. It's the promise of a better tomorrow that keeps us going."
Dirk stood up and took his hand and said, "Come with me." He led him through the connecting door into his bedroom, "You're sleeping with me tonight." Dirk went into his dressing room and undressed and returned to bed after turning off the lights.
He pulled Shaun into his arms and kissed him tenderly. "Will you let me make love to you tonight?"
"I've longed for this night for some time," Shaun said.
Dirk removed the covers and turned the bedside lamp on low and undressed Shaun. He made him lie on his back and straddled him. He took the bottle of lotion from his night stand, squeezed it onto his hands to warm, and began to massage Shaun's body. Dirk leaned down and kissed Shaun until Shaun was completely aroused. He turned him on his stomach and massaged his back. Then he reached over and took two condoms from the bedside table. He turned Shaun on his side and put one condom on himself and the other on Shaun's erect penis. Then he massaged Shaun's anus until his rectum was stretched enough to accept his entry. Dirk penetrated him very slowly, until he was deep inside.
Dirk was slow and deliberate, and excited by Shaun's wonderfully trim body. His skin shone and he could feel the tight muscles under his elastic skin. Dirk was ready to climax. He was waiting for that magic moment that would take both of them over the edge. He could feel Shaun's body begin to tighten in his arms and the sphincter muscle locked around his swollen penis until they both erupted in a long and sustained orgasm.
It took a while before their breathing return to normal. Beads of perspiration covered their bodies.
"Let's hit the showers," Dirk said. He led him into the bathroom, flushed the condoms down the toilet and took him into the large walk-in shower. He washed Shaun and dried him with a large bath towel. Then he took Shaun in his arms once again, kissed him tenderly, and then led him back to bed. They lay down next to each other. Dirk wrapped his arm around Shaun and held him. He pulled the covers around them and kissed Shaun again. "You have one hot sexy body, baby."
"You're not so bad yourself for an older gentleman," Shaun said. "I'm happy to know everything is still working after all these years."
Dirk chuckled; "I ought to break you in half for that remark; older gentleman, indeed. I'm only a couple of minutes older than you."
"Go to sleep, Dirk. You'll need to rebuild all your strength for the next time." Shaun kissed him tenderly on the eyes, ears, and mouth and said, "Now go to sleep."
Dirk laughed again, "You'll regret that remark young man, wait until tomorrow," Dirk said. "Good night, baby. I'll wake you in the morning."
Dirk woke at four-thirty and was still holding Shaun in his arms. He slept right through the night without waking. He liked the feel of Shaun's naked body in his arms. It was true; there was no comparison in the way they made love. Shaun was hot and sexy and enjoyed sex. He knew how to use his body to heighten the excitement of their lovemaking, even in the submissive roll. His whole body seemed to meld with Dirk's in the most desirable way. It finally dawned on Dirk that he had fallen in love with Shaun. "Thank you, Brett, for sending Shaun to me." Yet, Dirk was still uncertain. He still harbored strong feelings for Brett.
Shaun woke up and whispered, "Don't worry about it my love, just let it happen, everything will work out fine." Shaun kissed him tenderly, and said, "Take one day at a time."
"Stop it, Shaun. Don't you have any feelings for yourself? How can you be so patient and put my feelings above your own?"
"Because I love you, Dirk. You forget, I've been in love with you for a long time. Another month, or another year, doesn't matter to me. You, on the other hand, have suffered a traumatic loss and you need time to heal. I'm thrilled that you made love to me. I realize we both were hungry for sex. Last night was the best sex I've ever had. I knew last night that we will become lovers, sometimes older gentlemen take longer to sort these things out, and that's all."
"You are going to drive me crazy," Dirk said. He squeezed him tightly and kissed him long and hard. He felt himself become aroused, and they had sex again with the friction of rubbing their bodies together. I want you to sleep with me every night from now on. We don't even have to have sex if you don't want to. I like to feel your naked body next to me."
"I have already thought about that," Shaun said. "I'm thinking of hiring a full time housekeeper to take care of my mother. I can visit her couple of times a week. If you allow me, I can use the attic for my studio. I could move in as soon as you clear it with your mother."
"Where did you want to hang my present?" Dirk asked.
"There is an ideal spot in the morning room, where we can see him every day."
"Let's get dressed and have breakfast," Dirk said. "We can see what the weather has in store for us today. In any event, we can be alone together on the boat. I like the thought of holding you all day, come on, baby, let's hit the showers."
The weather forecast had improved. They sailed south to Montauk Point. Shaun sat in the cockpit next to Dirk, who had one hand on the wheel and the other around Shaun. Shaun slipped his hand under Dirk's shirt and gentled rubbed his chest and played with his nipples. He could see that Dirk had an erection and remained that way for most of the trip.
Shaun went below around eleven and laid out the lunch that the cook had prepared for them. Dirk set the controls on automatic pilot and went below to eat lunch. After lunch, they turned about and headed back to the Westhampton Yacht Club.
"You know, you're driving me wild with desire; I don't think I can take any more. I want you to just sit there and keep those talented hands in your pockets until we get home, kissing is okay, but don't touch the body."
Shaun laughed; "I wanted to see if those jeans would rip apart with that erection of yours. You are a one hell of stud," Shaun said. "You could put a lot of stallions to shame, my love. I promise to behave, but you're so cute, and I love to feel your muscular body."
"I want you to show Molly your gift, and give her the good news; when we get back, I'll also take you on a tour of the estate."
"Look, handsome, if Molly feels uncomfortable about me living with you, I can always find a place nearby, please don't make any waves."
"Let me worry about that. You just worry about keeping me happy, and everything will be just fine. Now clean up this mess and come back and keep me warm."
"Aye, aye, captain."
When they returned to the yacht club, Dirk introduced Shaun to the club manager and had him enrolled as member. Then he gave him a quick tour of Westhampton and drove back to Harcourt Hall.
"The sea air has given you some color; you look radiant and healthy for a change," Dirk said. "Speaking from an older man's perspective, that is."
Shaun laughed, "It is not the sea air that has given me the color, it's the handsome older gentleman that did that. I'll be in the nursery doing some sketching if you need me."
The children were playing and amusing themselves with coloring books when Shaun arrived. He spoke with the governess and told her he wanted to do some sketching and take several rolls of film of the children. He told everyone to just ignore him and keep doing what they were doing before he got there. The kids went back to their coloring, and Shaun was able to get the candid shots he wanted.
They asked him to draw some more cartoon characters, which he did. They tried to copy the characters, but were becoming frustrated. So Shaun simplified the figures for them to copy. He had been there almost two hours when Dirk joined them.
"Is everything all right?" Shaun asked."
"Everything is just fine. Mother would like to speak to you, and she is waiting in your sitting room."
Shaun walked into his suite and found Molly still admiring Brett's painting. "I understand you wanted to see me?"
"Please sit down, Shaun. I wanted to thank you for the splendid portrait you painted of my son. He looks so alive in this painting. You are very generous and I thank you for this wonderful gift. It could fetch a handsome price in today's market."
"Not everything in this world is for sale, Molly. This painting is priceless; I would never sell it. This painting of Brett belongs in Harcourt Hall. It was a labor of love and the first large canvas I ever attempted."
"I agree with your idea of hanging it in the morning room," Molly said. "The butler will help you with anything you will need."
"Dirk told me that he has asked you to move in with us," Molly said. "Do you think you will be comfortable sleeping with Dirk in Brett's home? You will be constantly reminded of him every day."
"Brett is not a stranger to me, Molly. We have been friends for many years. You are the only person who concerns me. This is your home, and I want you to feel comfortable having me around. I do not intend to move in here without your approval. I've told Dirk that I would be just as happy renting a place nearby."
"Do you know anything about the Harcourt Family, or of Dirk's financial circumstances?" Molly asked.
"I'm afraid not, Molly, I know you're a wealthy family. I had done some research into the Harcourt Companies some time ago. I know that Dirk became CEO after Brett died, but that is about all I know. Frankly, Molly, I really don't care about the Harcourt money. My only concern is my relationship with Dirk and his family. I'm independent now, and I have enough money to provide for myself and my mother. I don't need Dirk's money."
"I'm an old woman, Shaun. Dirk and my grandchildren are the only family I have left. I don't know you well enough to make a judgment about you. I've always judged people by instincts and I have a good feeling about you. If Dirk wants you to live here with him, I will not stand in your way. Dirk wants you to be here, and that is all that matters. I'm willing to reserve my judgment about you."
"Thank you, Molly; you are a very fair-minded woman and I will do everything possible not to disappoint you."
"Now that is settled, we should sit down and discuss your needs as far as your studio on the third floor is concerned. The third floor is quite large and was originally use as servants quarters. Later on, we used it for extra guest's bedrooms. Years ago, most of our staff preferred to live in their own homes off the estate. Therefore, you can have the third floor all to yourself. I'll have Alex Savage, our construction engineering expert sit down with us next week to help us design a studio for you."
"Sounds like a winner," Shaun said. "I'll have the Horvath Gallery store my paintings until we have a vault built. I also would like to hang the portrait you saw at the gallery in the library when it is returned to me, if you would like."
"I would like that," Molly said. "Well, I better see what the girls are up to. I'm happy to have a resident artist and professor in the house. I'm sure the girls will be delighted as well, all they talk about is you, anyway."
Shaun called the butler and asked his help to hang Brett's painting in the morning room. They removed and crated the painting that was hanging there in order to hang Brett's portrait.
Dirk was waiting for him outside the front of the house to take him on the tour of the property.
"Sorry to keep you waiting," Shaun said. "I had to make sure Brett's portrait was hung properly."
"Did you and Mother have a nice chat?"
"It was delightful, thank you. She was very gracious about everything. However, I'm on a trial basis, of course. If I'm not a monster and conduct myself properly, I can stay. She didn't mention anything about my share of the rent or household expenses. But, I expect you'll have to pay for me from now on."
Dirk smiled, "Don't worry, baby, I'll get my money's worth out of you, one way or another."
"Do I detect a hint of mean-spiritedness, master? Do you plan to take your pleasures from this innocent and trusting young artist? Have you no shame?"
"That's the game plan."
"I'm not complaining, I just wanted to make sure I knew the ground rules."
"God, you are the most tantalizing lover I ever known. Will you please tell me about your conversation with Molly?"
"Golly, I'm glad I don't have to work for you. Molly said that she is taking me on face value, because you want to play house with me. She is arranging to have Alex Savage meet with us next week to go over the plans to renovate the third floor for my studio."
"I'm glad that's settled. Evidentially you answered all her questions to her satisfaction."
"I guess so, because I told her I would not stay if I she did not approve of me."
Dirk smiled, "I see you're not so dumb after all. Here I thought you were just another pretty face."
"Look, sweetheart, I've got you now, and I plan to hold on to you for dear life. I'm going to fight with ever tool at my disposal to keep you. I like Molly a lot, but remember — I love you. I'm also serious about not staying where I'm not welcome."
"I understand," Dirk said. "I felt the same way when Brett asked me to live here with him."
They made a tour of the grounds and started to walk back to the manor house. "Is there anything special you would like to see before dinner?"
"I want to go back to your bedroom and undress you and make love to you. I want to hold you in my arms and feel your wonderful hard body against mine and then have a nice refreshing nap and sit in the whirlpool. After we have a delightful dinner with Molly and the girls, we will retire early and have sex again, and fall asleep in each other's arms. Do you think you can manage that, my aging teenager?"
Dirk laughed heartily, "That is about what I had in mind, but I didn't know if you were up to it."
They both walked into the drawing room for cocktails with Molly. "I hope you two do not mind, but, the girls and I have been invited over to Nell Mullins' for dinner and a Disney movie tonight. Her granddaughters are in for the weekend and thought the girls could have a good time. I know this is short notice, but Nell was so insistent I could not refuse. You don't mind, do you, sweetheart?"
"No, Mother, you and the girls enjoy yourselves," Dirk said. "Shaun and I will be flying over to Scarborough Manor first thing in the morning to have breakfast with the Erickson's. We'll be back mid-afternoon."
"All right, dear, have a nice time and give Noel and Scott my love."
They were alone in the dining room having dinner, "What do you want to bet that everyone in Westhampton will know by Monday that the Harcourt's have a renowned painter in residence to paint the portraits of the Harcourt family."
"My mother will be having many quiet little lunches for her friends to view Brett's portrait."
"Nell Mullins is the biggest gossip in Westhampton. You have to hand it to Mother; she knows how to play the game. In one fell swoop she has moved you into the house and retains her role as a successful patron of the arts in her social circle. She is now the reigning queen of her social set. What do you want to bet Mother will plan a large charity ball to introduce you as her very own resident artist?"
"Molly is a very clever lady," Shaun said. "I would have never thought of anything so clever, yet it is all so plausible. I have a lot to learn. I think I'll paint her portrait as a Christmas gift, do you think she'll like that?"
"She would really appreciate that. That's a wonderful gift for her."
They retired to Dirk's bedroom suite for the evening. Dirk made his call to Noel to confirm their breakfast date and called the pilot to let him know they would be leaving at seven-thirty in the morning. Shaun changed into his lounging robe and sat on the large sofa in front of the fireplace. After finishing all his calls, Dirk changed into his dressing gown and turned on the gas fire logs. He joined Shaun on the sofa, pulled him into his arms, and kissed him on the cheek.
Shaun laid his head on Dirk's shoulder and said, "This is delightful. You're an exciting man to be with; I've never experienced love like this before. You're the tender and most gentle man I have ever known."
"You've made it happen, baby," Dirk said. He opened Shaun's robe and ran his fingers over his body. Shaun did the same to Dirk, gently running his fingertips over Dirk's muscular body. They both became aroused to the point of orgasm. Dirk took him by the hand and led him over to the bed and continued their lovemaking.
Shaun whispered in Dirk's ear, "You're a wonderful lover, I'm so very happy. You're the most beautiful man I have ever slept with."
"I've fallen in love with you, Shaun. At first I thought it was just the sex thing, but it is more that, it's love. I will admit that I was attracted to you in the beginning because you reminded me of Brett, but you are so different. You're hot and sexy, and very masculine, you make me feel special, and you're sincere, warm and passionate."
Thank you, my love, you've made me very happy," Shaun said. "We both can fall asleep and dream happy thoughts tonight." He kissed Dirk and laid his head on his chest, and drifted off to sleep.
Dirk was so excited about his wonderful good fortune. 'Shaun is handsome, in spite of what he thinks of himself. He is one of those lovable people that you instinctively want to be with forever.' Dirk thought that strange, in spite of Shaun's rejection as a child. 'It's a wonder he turned out so well adjusted.' He never thought he would ever get a second chance at finding another lover after Brett. He kissed Shaun on the cheek and drifted off to sleep.
At two thirty in the morning, he was suddenly awakened, by the sound of Shaun's sobbing. "What the matter, baby?" Dirk asked.
"I had this frightening dream about Brett, it was so real," Shaun said. "It was terrible. This happened on a Friday evening. Brett had just finished talking to you on the telephone. He was very happy. He called a man by the name of Ian. They drove together to the helicopter pad in your new car. He told Ian to be careful driving home, and told him to park the car at the far end of the garage and cover it with one of the auto dust covers. He was all excited about his surprise, and of course your reaction to his news and your new car. When he reached the pad, he said good-bye to Ian, and took off in the helicopter. They were over the Great South Bay when an explosion caused the helicopter to lose control and began heading toward the water. That is when I woke up."
"That was a strange dream," Dirk said. "Had you ever read any accounts of the accident in the paper?"
"No, I didn't know Brett had died until you told me."
"Did he say anything?"
"There was too much happening in those last few seconds; his brain was racing so fast. He screamed, 'Dear God, the bad guys have won, good-bye, my love...' then a white flash, then nothing."
"Did you see the car clearly in your dream," Dirk asked.
"Yes, very clearly"
"Describe the car and everything you can remember?"
"Brett told Ian that he had ordered the car six months before. It's a royal blue Rolls-Royce convertible. The exterior is a royal blue with a burgundy leather interior and a tan canvas convertible top for the summer and a royal blue hard top for the winter. It is fully equipped and bullet-proofed. He had a secret compartment build in the armrest for a pistol. It's a beautiful car."
"That's enough for now, my love," Dirk said. "Try to go back to sleep. No more bad dreams." He kissed Shaun tenderly, but it did not stop there, they made love again.
"You only get better," Shaun said. "I'm still tingling all over. You know how to recharge my batteries. That is some man tool you've got, I think I'll capture it in oil."
"You can do anything you want with my tool except capturing it on canvas. You know, for a little guy, you're well hung. I plan to have a lot of fun with you, my dear. Now snuggle close, and be a good little bunny, and go back to sleep."
They fell asleep again and did not wake up until seven. They showered, dressed and headed for the helicopter that was already waiting on the pad.
The pilot started the engine, and took off for Scarborough Manor on the Hudson River.
Noel Erickson met them at the helicopter pad and walked them to the main entrance into the manor.
"It's good to see you again, Shaun. I don't see any paintings under your arms, what gives?"
"I wanted to make sure your check was good first," Shaun said.
Noel chuckled, "You never know these days. Scott is in the morning room playing daddy, let's spoil his day."
"Scott, this is Shaun Spalding, a very talented artist," Noel said.
"It's grand meeting you, Shaun. I did drop by the Horvath to see your exhibit and was impressed."
Scott introduced the children, and asked Jason to take them into breakfast while they chatted a bit.
"Let's have a glass of juice and chat for a bit," Scott said. "You look like your old self again, Dirk."
"I have Shaun to thank for that," Dirk said. "I'd wanted you to be the first to know that Shaun and I are a couple."
"Congratulations, you two," Noel said. "This is great news. I thought I detected those telltale signs. I'm very happy for you both. How did you meet?"
"I'll let Shaun tell you the story," Dirk said.
"If you feel uncomfortable, Shaun, don't feel you have to say anything at all," Scott said.
"I don't mind at all." Shaun began his story, starting from the time he noticed the couple at Harcourt Place, and described how he was able to paint a portrait of each of them. He related his first encounter with Dirk over a year ago, and told them of how the relationship began to grow over time. Finally, the thrill of falling in love with the real Dirk and not the character he had captured on canvas.
"The real Dirk is far superior to my imaginary prince charming," Shaun said. "He's an incredible man and I'm fortunate to be able to share his life."
"Thanks, Shaun, that's a nice story. We wish you both a long and happy life together," Scott said.
"I'm starving," Noel said. "How about having breakfast? We need to see the boys off. They are up for fun and games with their uncles at the Retreat. We can talk later after they leave. I want to know more about Shaun. In case you didn't know it, I'm a lawyer and I have a couple of questions to ask you, Shaun."
"Shaun, please be patient with my other half," Scott said, "the poor guy is from Texas, and that should speak volumes. He tries hard to overcome that, but sometimes he forgets his manners."
"Looks like I'm in deep doo doo now," Noel said. "Let's eat. I'll promise to be good."
They all went into the dining room for breakfast.
Jason came in a little later and said, "We're ready to leave, Dad, we'll be home in time for dinner. Nice to see you again Uncle Dirk and I enjoyed meeting you, Mr. Spalding." He went over and kissed Noel and Scott on the cheek and left.
"Very polite young man," Shaun said.
"He's a fine young man and smart as a whip, just like his father."
"I take it; I'm out of the dog house?"
"You know I can't stay annoyed with you."
"What did you want to ask me, Noel?"
"I only wanted to know where the Spalding's are from," Noel asked.
Shaun told them his life story. "Today I'm earning more than ever from the sale of my paintings, and I'm enjoying my work."
"Shaun, would you like the grand tour of Scarborough Hall?" Scott asked.
"I would indeed. I noticed you have some fine paintings hanging in the main hall, I would like to see them all."
After they left, Noel said, "Dirk, Shaun's a nice guy. I liked him from the beginning. You know, you're a lucky bastard."
"I know, Shaun is a delightful guy. I never thought I could possibly find another lover after Brett. God has given me a second chance at happiness."
"If you had told me that this scruffy looking guy I met nosing around my property a year ago, would turn out to be my lover, I would have told you, you were crazy," Dirk said. "You should have seen him, long hair and that thick beard, he look like hell. Yet, once he began to speak, I forgot about his scruffy looks and saw the man underneath. He was gentle, intelligent and an absolute pleasure to be around. Then I met him for lunch at the Four Seasons six months ago, and he astounded me. Here was this handsome, sexy person. The more I was with him, the more I wanted him around. I'm crazy about him. Shaun has so many endearing qualities, and he sees beauty in everyone and everything. I think that's why he's such a fine artist."
"He frightens me sometimes," Dirk said. "I believe he has extrasensory perception, and Brett has reached out to him." Dirk related the incident of Shaun's dream last night, and about how he communicated with Brett. "I have not set eyes on that car since Ian drove it home over a year ago. Yet, I'm willing to bet it is exactly as Shaun has described it. The odd thing is that, in his own mind, he has bonded with Brett. It's very unnerving to say the least. I'm crazy in love with him and can't get enough of him; I'm sure you know the feeling."
"That nightmare is unusual," Noel said. "Let's get Ian on the phone; I want to see if there is anything to this. You're sure Shaun never knew anything about the crash?"
"He knows absolutely nothing, and I believe him," Dirk said. "You ask Ian about the car and the last words Brett had said to him that night."
Noel put down the receiver after he spoke to Ian. "Everything he saw in that dream, including Brett's conversation was accurate. Ian had forgotten about the hardtop, because that was delivered by truck several weeks later."
"Do I have your permission to discuss this with Scott?"
"Of course, I welcome any light he can shed on this. Let me know if he has any explanation for all this."
"Hopefully, the mystery will be cleared up one day," Noel said. "In the meantime, I would continue to treat these dreams as you have up to this point, and accept them for what they are. Why don't you take Shaun on a honeymoon to Paradise Island; God knows you need it? We always find it relaxing, and it will give you two sometime alone together."
"You're right, that is a great idea."
Scott and Shaun returned from their tour and chatted for another hour. Shaun made an appointment to do a photo session with them the following Saturday. Scott commissioned him to paint the family portrait.
"This has been a pleasant visit," Dirk said. "But now, we've got to be heading back to Harcourt Hall."
Scott and Noel walked them to their helicopter and watched them take off.
"I'm really happy for Dirk," Scott said. "Shaun is the ideal person for him. I find him fascinating. Lurking behind that calm, relaxed exterior is a brilliant mind."
"He exhibits so much enthusiasm when you engage him in an interesting subject, and believe me he is well informed on so many subjects. His brain is a veritable computer crammed full of technical information. He admitted he is a speed-reader and makes a point to keep up on many technical and scientific journals. I was also impressed with his knowledge of antiques. He took the time to describe the history of one of our Chippendale chairs. At one point, he switched to a dissertation on a medical report he read in the American College of Surgeons publication, regarding a new orthopedic surgery technique he thought was flawed. It seems he studied anatomy to improve his understanding of the human body. Shaun claims it improved his painting skills. It's obvious that Shaun is deeply in love with Dirk. He'll be a strong influence on him in the future. Dirk may be a strong and forceful leader, but he needs the companionship and support that Shaun can give him."
"You're right, Sweetheart," Noel said. "I've noticed the improvement in Dirk's attitude. He is more relaxed and content. Today was the first time since Brett's death that Dirk has really opened up. He admitted that he was initially attracted to Shaun because he bore a striking resemblance to Brett. As he began to know him better, he realized that the resemblance ended there. Dirk loved Brett but Brett and Shaun are worlds apart in personalities. Shaun is intelligent, completely honest and has a sophisticated sense of humor. Brett's personality was completely different. Dirk has come to grips with his conscience, he told me he will always love Brett, that will never change, but he is in love with Shaun now."
Noel walked over to Scott and kissed him tenderly. "I would go out of my mind if anything ever happened to you, my handsome spouse."
"You're turning me on, Baby," Scott said. "I think you need an examination right now, come with me." Noel followed Scott up to their bedroom. They undressed and climbed into bed and made love. "I love you so much, Scott, I never knew what happiness was until I met you. Life has been good to us, my love."
"I feel the same way about you, Noel. You are still as beautiful and exciting today, as you were the day I fell in love with you. The years may have flown by, yet you are still the most wonderful person I have ever known, and I will always love you. When I think about poor Brett, I realize how lucky we are."
"God, I'm so lucky to be married to a handsome Scotsman, like you."
Harcourt Hall
Dirk and Shaun were sitting in the library discussing Shaun's moving plans. "Do you really think you can have everything squared away in two weeks?" Dirk asked.
"I'm sure I can, why do you ask?"
"Because, I want to take you on a honeymoon vacation to Paradise Island, you should be moved in by then. I want you all to myself for ten glorious days in the sun."
"That sounds wonderful, my love, but you're getting ahead of yourself, Dear. Only married people go on honeymoons, this will be our first vacation together," Shaun said. "What clothes will I need for the trip?"
"Shaun, will you marry me?"
"Are you sure you are ready to be with me for the rest of your life, Dirk? I will only marry you if it is for the rest of our lives, my love."
"Let me put it to you another way, Shaun, will you marry me?"
"Yes, my handsome prince, I will marry you."
Dirk took him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. "God, I love you so much. I know we will be happy together. It's all right to cry, Sweetheart," Dirk said as he kissed away the tears. "Look, Baby, after you finish up with Molly and Alex tomorrow morning, I would like you to join me for lunch in Manhattan. We need to do a little shopping for our trip. Starting on Friday morning I want you to sit in on my monthly Board meeting from now on. Pack an overnight bag because we will be staying overnight at the apartment."
"This is turning into an interesting week," Shaun said. "I would like to observe a giant of industry at work. Thanks for inviting me."
"I think you should learn as much as you can about the family business so I can bounce some of my ideas off you. I'm sure you can put that creative brain of yours to work."
"I'm interested in anything that concerns you, Dirk. I'm flattered that you want to share this part of your life with me as well."
"The Board meeting won't be too bad, since you've already met them at your gallery and at the cocktail party."
"God, I have a lot to do before we leave," Shaun said. "I have to hire a staff to take care of mother, pack up all my equipment and start working on my new commissions. I'll have to commute every day until everything is sorted out. Are you sure you don't mind me using the helicopter every day?"
"Of course not, you're my spouse. You do anything your little heart desires; Baby, you keep forgetting you're married now. You should not trouble your head about money any more. The cars and planes are there for your convenience, use them. Just make sure you're home every night."
"You're so easy to please," Shaun said. "Now let me run up to our suite and make my calls."
Shaun finished his calls and showered. He slipped on his lounging robe and lay down to rest until Dirk returned to dress for dinner.
Shaun was sound asleep when Dirk walked into the suite to change. He sat down next to him and removed the book from his chest. He kissed him on the forehead.
Shaun opened his eyes and smiled, "Hi, Spouse."
"Hi, yourself," Dirk said. "You looked so peaceful sleeping there I did not have the heart to wake you."
"Do you have a few minutes to make out before we change?"
Dirk removed his shoes and lay down next to him on the bed. They embraced and kissed.
"You know you're everything I dreamed you would be," Shaun said. "Every day I spend with you is marvelous. Today was an exciting day. You have shattered my sheltered world and have made me feel how wonderful it is to be in love. This is a new experience for me, yet I'm going to enjoy every minute of this attention."
"I never thought I'd find happiness like this again, Shaun. You've saved me from a life of heartache, and given me a new lease on life. God has granted me another chance at happiness and I'm going to grab it with both hands. You know, I really don't feel like dressing for dinner, I would rather stay wrapped in your arms like this."
