Chapter 37
The Homecoming
Josh and Karl sat in silence for the first little bit of the journey while Karl
negotiated his way out of the prison grounds and onto the streets. Knowing the
route to the motorway fairly well meant that Karl did not need to concentrate
much, and he began the conversation once he was settled into the route.
"So now you are free again. I have worked on the assumption that you want to
come and stay with me for a short while at least and maybe longer. So I have a
room ready for you and have told my son, Simon, about you. I have to warn you
that you might find him a bit hostile at first; he doesn't believe me that you
are innocent. Please don't be put off by that; he hasn't met you yet, and he is
just a bit anti everything. I think when he sees that you are not a threat to
him he will calm down, and you guys might even become friends." Karl paused.
"Thank you, Karl. I really don't want to go home, and I'd love to come and stay
with you. I guess I'm going to have to get a job and earn a living if I can. I
have no other way of getting money, so I won't be able to go back and finish my
schooling. But I promise you that as soon as I get a job I will pay my way with
you."
"Firstly, you will have nothing to pay. I am offering you my home free of
charge, and my family know that. Simon might not like the idea, but my wife
Esther is fully behind me, so you need not worry about that."
"But I have nothing. These clothes that I am wearing are all that I have and I
even threw my pants in the bin because they were too uncomfortable after six
months without them. How can I impose all of that on you?"
"You are not imposing anything on me, and besides, when you win your case you
will be getting an awful lot in compensation. It won't be enough to live on for
the rest of your life, but I am sure it will carry you through the rest of your
schooling and university and probably a fair way beyond that. So before we get
home, we are stopping at a couple of stores and will get you kitted out. I am
happy to do this for you, but if you want to keep a record of it and pay me back
when you have the money then I will not stop you. Not for me, but because I
think you would feel more comfortable about it."
"Why are you doing this? I know you said you hoped I might be able to help Simon
sort some things out, but surely there is more to it than that?"
"Josh, you know that I believed in you from the start. I also told you that I
would help you as much as I could. But in a way I lied. As we were going to the
Academy and you told us your story, my first impulse was to turn around and take
you back to try there and then to get a re-trial. But I knew that would cost me
my job and I have a family to consider too, so I stayed on the road taking you
to somewhere you didn't belong or deserve, and I placed you in very real danger.
I had the opportunity to do the right thing, but I failed you and took the easy
way out. Not a day has gone past since that I have not condemned myself for that
cowardly act. So yes, some of this is for you, just because I believe you are
worth it. But it is also for me, an opportunity to make amends for failing you
when I had a chance to do something."
"But you didn't fail me. You and Joe were the first ones to believe my story,
and that gave me hope and confidence and the strength to endure and come out the
other end a better person. So it is me who already owes you, not the other way
round."
"Josh, you are the most unique teenager I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
Your optimism and determination are inspiring. I have heard quite a bit of the
effect you have had on that place these last six months and Officer Steven and I
have become quite good friends because of you. You know even Steven's wife has
been doing what she can to help you. Why? Because of who you are and the effect
you have on people. Oh, and in the boot is a surprise for you from him."
"A surprise?"
"Yes and when we get to the services we will stop for some refreshment and you
can get it out and see what it is."
"Thank you." Josh didn't really know what to say and he fell silent for a bit as
a multitude of thoughts and feelings invaded not just his head but it seemed his
body as well. Suddenly he felt very tired and leaned back in the seat, resting
his head against the headrest. Closing his eyes he quickly dozed off, only to
jerk awake as his head fell forward onto his chest.
"There is a lever at the side of the seat. Pull up on it and push back with your
body to get the seat to recline a bit and then you can snooze more comfortably."
Josh gave Karl an embarrassed grin but still reclined the seat and once more
began to doze off. He didn't really get to sleep so when Karl began to slow down
to enter the services he woke up and sat up, pulling on the lever to return the
back of his seat to its upright position.
"Right, how desperate are you for a pee? Or do you want to see what Steven has
given you before we go in?"
"I think I can hold it long enough for a quick look." Josh smiled at Karl.
"Okay, I will pop the boot and you can go and look by yourself, just in case it
is something you want to keep secret."
"You mean you don't know what it is?"
"All I know is that this guy came out and handed me the box and told me it was a
surprise for you from Steven and that I should let you open it in private. So go
on, get around the back and have a look while I wait here."
Josh got out and went round to the boot of the car. Lifting the lid he saw the
box with his name on it. Opening the box he found a pair of orange overalls with
his number 269 on them. Lying on top of the overalls was a note. ' Josh,' Steven
had written, 'there are not a lot of things we have as souvenirs in our
establishment but I thought you might like to have these overalls as something
to remind you of what you want to do and why you want to do it. Not that you
really need any encouragement or reminding. Underneath these overalls are some
other things along with some notes which you might find helpful in carrying out
your desire to bring about change. Also my address, email, landline phone and
mobile numbers are there if you ever need them. Please don't be a stranger, keep
in touch and I will help you as much as I can.' Josh had to put the lid back on
the box and use both his hands to press against his eyes to squeeze the tears
away before he could see clearly enough to move back to the front of the car,
carrying his box with him. "I think we had better go in now or I am going to
cry. Can I leave this in the front so that I can look at it some more when we
are back on the road again?"
"Of course you can. Let's get in to those loos."
As Josh stood beside Karl at the urinals he wondered to himself how many people
thought they were father and son instead of court officer and parolee. Josh felt
a certain pride in the thought that he could now be mistaken for someone's son
rather than the prisoner he was taken for when he had to go to the hospital for
his treatment. As he shook the last drops off he looked towards Karl to see if
he was still there and noticed his arm shaking as he too got rid of the last
drips. They zipped up together and turned towards the wash hand basins, looking
at each other in the mirrors behind the basins. Karl smiled and Josh returned
it. Josh washed his hands and then splashed some water onto his face, not
thinking that there would be no paper towels as the services mostly had hot air
dryers. As Josh looked at them he realised they were also the type that would
only come on as you passed your hands down between them. There was no nozzle
that he could turn and blow warm air onto his face. He began to wipe his face
with the sleeve of his shirt when Karl handed him a clean handkerchief to use
instead. Josh smiled his thanks and dried himself.
"Right. Coffee, tea, coke or what?"
"I'm not sure. It has been a while since I had any of those. I mean, they served
juice and something they called tea but I think it was the dish water. The last
time I had a coffee was when I was taken to the hospital to have my injuries
checked. So maybe I could have a coke today as I have not had one since the
night I was arrested. Thank you."
"Good. Shall we just grab some to go and then hit the road again?"
"I'm okay with that."
"Fine. It will be quicker to grab them from the book shop than one of those food
outlets; let's go then."
They walked into the W H Smith and to the back of the shop where they each chose
a normal coke and moved over to the counter to pay. Back in the car they opened
their bottles and then Karl pulled out and followed the exit signs to get back
onto the motorway. Josh got about half way through his bottle of coke before he
screwed the lid on and gave a loud, long burp. "Sorry. Not used to the gas
anymore, I guess." He reached down to the foot well between his feet to retrieve
his box from Steven. "Is it going to bother you if I look at this while you are
driving?"
"No, go ahead. I will keep my eyes on the road so it will still be private for
you."
Josh lifted the lid and pulled the overalls out to see what had been put
underneath them. Lifting the box Josh put the overalls down on his lap and then
rested the box on top of them. There was a file folder in the box, and as Josh
lifted it out he saw that it contained notes on events and inmates at the
academy. Steven had put a note at the front of the file to say that Josh might
like to see how the officers assess individuals who come in to the Academy and
what they believe they will need to do to try and rehabilitate the inmate in
question. Stephen also commented that while the notes were genuine, he had
replaced the offender's name with a letter and had given the officers numbers.
Underneath that folder was another one with yet another note from Steven. This
one was a full copy of the file the Academy had on Josh. "Please do not let
anyone else know that I have given you a copy of this file. I could get into
trouble for doing so even though under the Freedom of Information Act you now
have a right to have a copy of it."
Josh could not resist it and began to read some of it. He saw a note by Gladys
which intimated that his arrival had caused quite a stir within the girl's cell
block as he was considered very good looking and cute and would make a most
delightful bed partner. Josh giggled a bit as he read that and Karl asked him if
he wanted to share what had made him happy. "That depends on how much a friend
of Steven's you are. Would you dub him in if you knew he had done something he
should not have done?"
"That depends on what it is that he has done. If it could bring harm or has
brought harm to someone else then I might feel I have to dub him in. But if it
is something that I think I can excuse then I would most likely not dub him in."
"Okay, Steven has given me a copy of the Academy's notes on me. He should have
got me to request a copy because then they would be obliged to give me a copy. I
was reading something that one of the officers said and it made me laugh."
"Do you want to share that with me?"
"So long as you don't use it to tease or embarrass me later."
"I can't promise about the teasing if it is just you and I but I will not use it
against you or to embarrass you. I wouldn't want to do that to you."
"Okay, Officer Gladys, who was with the girl's wing but helped Steven with the
investigation following my little incident, put this in my record, and I quote,
'Mr. Joshua Tolmers has got all my girls buzzing. His first appearance in the
dining hall caused quite a stir amongst them. It seems that he is considered to
be both good looking and cute with good appendages and they would all like him
to share their beds. Now I will have to put up with a bunch of girls daydreaming
and regretting their situation and not getting anything of any worth done.' I
guess I had quite an effect on the woman's block then." Josh giggled again.
"From what I hear you had more of an effect on a certain cell in a male block."
"Steven has been talking hasn't he?"
"He might have shared some things with me." Karl laughed.
As Josh was about to put the file back into the box to read later in private, he
saw a brown envelope at the bottom of the box. Lifting it out he saw Steven's
note, "You might want to look at this in private first." Josh's curiosity was
too great and he decided to risk it. Opening the envelope he found there were a
few photographs in it. The top one he immediately knew had to be Steven and his
family and he flicked it over to see that Steven had written on the back. "In
the hopes you will come and stay with us some time, I thought you might like to
see what some of your new family look like. Me you know, and the beautiful lady
next to me is Abigail, my wife. Standing in front of me is my oldest daughter,
Susan, and Marcie is in front of Abigail." There was another picture of several
of the officers, most of whom Josh had met. Once again Steven had written their
names on the back in the order they were standing. The third photograph was of
Josh, Andy and Chris in their orange overalls out on the playing field. Then
Josh gave another giggle as he looked at the fourth and final photograph. This
one was of him and Sam standing side by side in a corridor just inside a door.
Josh realised that Steven must have taken it with his phone when he was taking
Sam to the cell block to introduce him to the other inmates. Steven had probably
taken it when he was locking one of the doors they had passed through. Sam was
closest to the camera and you could see the swell of his bubble butt along with
arc of his cock as it hung limply over his balls. Even though the picture ended
at the knees with the rest of him being naked it would have been right to assume
his feet were also bare. Even though the picture was taken a bit from the side
you could still see that Sam had that worried look on his face that he soon lost
when he got into the idea of being naked and bald. Josh was a bit obscured by
Sam and so there was nothing of his butt to see but he had a smile on his face
and his cock hung in a similar manner to Sam's. Both boys showed some average
definition in their chests and flat stomachs as neither of them carried any
extra weight. It struck Josh that this was the only photograph he had of Sam and
he knew he would treasure it.
"Want to see my boyfriend?"
