Chapter 9

Now:

Philip knocked on the door, and he heard The Head’s familiar voice.  “Come in.”

There he stood, wearing only a pair of boxer shorts, as handsome as Philip remembered him.  Jeremy held out his arms and Philip fell into them.  He allowed Jeremy to enfold him in a cape of serenity.

“You said you would keep in touch,” The Head said reproachfully.

“I know, but I was so busy at college.  You know how it is.”

“You were probably fucking Stuart and every other good looking stud within eye sight.  Did you do well with the faculty also?”

“Philip broke out laughing.  “You know me very well,” he said.

“I heard that your parents adopted Stuart.  That was wonderful of them, but they should have done it sooner.  The Academy could have used the extra money.”

“It didn’t cost the Academy a dime.  The Walter Weller Scholarship Fund paid for everything, including Stu’s allowance,” Philip said sounding very irked.

“True, but another student could have benefitted.”

Philip decided to say no more.  Jeremy went to the door and locked it.  He dropped his shorts and sat on the sofa.  Philip smiled and got naked.  He joined The Head on the sofa.  They sat side by side smiling at each other.  Suddenly Jeremy pounced on Philip, taking Philip’s cock in his mouth.  Jeremy sucked deftly and Philip came too quickly.  He returned the favor, and the two men sat on the sofa holding each other and smiling.

“That was very enjoyable, but it isn’t what I came for,” Philip said.

“I’m well aware of that.  I got your résumé, and it was quite a surprise.”

“I saw your ad for a math teacher in ‘Mathematics Today’.  I must say that I was shocked.  What happened to Clare?”

“The old boy decided to retire early.  He’s sixty-two you know.  He’s interviewing with me this afternoon.  It’s only a formality.  The job is yours, but it comes with a condition.”

“Oh, and what’s that?”

“I need an assistant.  I want you to be Assistant Head Master.  You won’t be stepping on toes.  Nobody else wants the job.  The good news is that you and I will have to meet privately almost every day.”

“There’s nothing wrong with that, but I have a request too.  I love you Jeremy, but one man is just not enough for me.  I want to be RFA in the ninth and tenth grade dormitory.  You can have my boys at tea time, but I want first dibs at night.”

“You’ve been away too long, Philip.  I’ve slowed way down.  I summon a prize pupil to tea no more than once or twice a week now.  Unlike you, I’d like to settle down.”

“Please don’t expect it to be with me, Love.  I’m just not ready.  I don’t know if I’ll ever be.”

“Well, you’re honest enough, and I’ll be happy with what I’ve got, for now.”

“We have an understanding then?” Philip asked, holding out his hand for Jeremy to shake.

There was a knock on the door.  “Enter,” The Head said, completely ignoring the fact that they were naked.  Clare came in and enveloped Philip in his arms, making sure that he pushed hard against his naked body.

“We’ve agreed on everything, Clare,” Jeremy said.  “You can retire with the certain knowledge that you leave your bailiwick in excellent hands.”

“You don’t know how relieved I am,” Clare cooed.  “You and Stu were my best pupils ever.  I disbanded the math team after you two graduated.  We were no longer competitive.  Now tell me, Philip.  How is your brother and how is he doing?  He had the most perfect ass I ever fucked, for my size, that is.”

“He’s married, Clare.  He and his bride tied the knot the weekend after graduation from Harvard.  They are both going to work on their doctorates in Physics at MIT.  Right now, they are on an extended honeymoon.”

“Good grief, that’s bad news.” Clare lamented.

Philip laughed.  “No sir, it’s good news, very good news.  He’s the happiest ball and chain I have ever seen.  He had fun at The Academy, but he was always heterosexual.  He just needed the right girl, and damned if she didn’t just fall into his lap.”

**********

After the first time Stu and Marnie slept together, Stu rented a tiny, frugal apartment off campus, leaving the dorm room solely to Philip.  This was no problem for Philip.  He had no trouble enticing someone into his bedroom almost every night.  Stu told Marnie that Fridays were brothers’ night out.  She never questioned it, and the brothers made love half through the night every Friday.  Stu always got home to Marnie by 1 AM.

Stu asked Philip to do him a favor, and never let on to Marnie how rich they were.

“When the fuck are you going to tell her?” Philip scolded.

“I dunno.  When the time is right.”

When the pair became engaged, Mr. Collins made a party at the pub.  Marnie insisted that Stu invite his parents.  She wanted to meet them and introduce both sets of parents.  Stu begged his folks to come to Boston, and pled with them not to indicate to Marnie how wealthy they were.  This was not a stretch for Margaret and Anthony.  They were not pompous, and lived their lives like down to earth people, especially when they were in a social setting.

The fact is they had a ball at the party, and both sets of parents loved each other.  Philip didn’t stay long.  He left with a sixteen year old cousin of the bride to be.

The four parents attended the graduation ceremony of their three children, and a week later, Stu and Marnie were married in a simple ceremony at Marnie’s small parish church.  Mr. Collins would not take a penny from Stu’s parents.  The reception was limited to fifty people, mostly on the bride’s side, in a very lovely restaurant in Beacon Hill.

Stu could not see the bride the night before the wedding, and so she stayed at her parents’ home.  He stayed up all night designing a website for the new dot com company that he and his father were launching.  Philip wanted no part of the new venture.  He was pursuing a teaching position at Boca Raton Academy, and that’s where his heart and his calling were directing him.  In the early hours of the morning of the wedding, Philip came to his brother’s apartment, and the groom and best man made love for three hours.

During the night, after the wedding reception was over, and before leaving on their honeymoon, the newlyweds were opening up their wedding gifts in their apartment.  Almost all the wedding gifts were generous, but when Marnie opened up the envelope given to them by her new in-laws, she gasped.

“Stu honey,” she said, “your folks made a big mistake.”

“What do you mean?”

“They’ve misplaced a decimal.  This check is for $100,000.00.”

The time was right.  Stu took Marnie’s hands in his.  “Marnie,” he said, trying to find the right words.  “I’ve got something to tell you.  I should have told you a long time ago, but I was afraid I might lose you.”

“Lose me?  It must be something horrible.”

“No, not at all.  In fact, I hope you’ll find it a wonderful thing.  Marnie my parents are extremely wealthy.  In fact, Philip and I are extremely wealthy in our own right.”  He avoided using terms like filthy rich or millionaire.

“How wealthy is that?” the startled girl asked.

“Well, I told you that we are going to Paris for a week.  Actually we are touring Europe first class, and won’t be back until classes begin.”

At last Marnie was speechless.  She just stared at Stu in disbelief.

“Please,” he begged, “say something.”

“Why didn’t you trust me?  I’m surprised you didn’t ask for a pre-nup,” she snapped.

“I love you too much for a pre-nup.  I don’t care if you take everything I have. I was afraid my money would scare you away.”

“Don’t you mean you wanted to find out if I was marrying you for your money?”

Stu fell to his knees.  “The thought never occurred to me.  I swear I love you so much it hurts.  Please, please forgive me.”

“You are a Class A jerk, Stu Bonchance, but I love you too, so what can I say.  Now start at the beginning and tell me everything I should know about you.”

Stu held her in his arms.  They were naked now, and lying in bed, but sex was the last thing on their minds.

“My birth mother was a crack head and a prostitute…..” he began, and he talked half through the night.  He told her about his miserable, abusive childhood, and she cried.  He wisely omitted any stories about his unusual sexual relationship with Philip.  After he was through telling the story, if Marnie suspected anything more than brotherly love between her husband and her brother-in-law, she kept it to herself.  They fell asleep in each other’s arms, without coupling, on the first night of their marriage.

**********

After Philip got settled in Room #1 in the ninth and tenth grade dormitory, he went to Jeremy’s office.  There were five openings remaining in the entering class, and he and Jeremy were to interview the remaining prospective students together.  The boy and his parents were also to be interviewed by the school counselor and a teacher, if they got by Jeremy and Philip.

There were two interviews on today’s calendar, two tomorrow, and one the following day.  He and Jeremy were wearing the school’s faculty robes.  They reviewed the two boys’ school and police records, and were satisfied that neither boy had ever been a trouble maker.  Their pictures were also in the folder.  One of them was fair haired and blue eyed, just what Jeremy always looked for.  Philip did a double take when he saw the second picture.  The boy was handsome, sure enough, but he was also black.

“Don’t be so surprised,” Jeremy said.  “As a private institution we can be discriminatory, but we have to move with the times.  Besides, it is getting more and more expensive to run the school, and someday we may have to apply for grant money from both the private and government sectors.  We would have to show no discrimination then.”

The first interview was with Dr. and Mrs. James Cummings, and their son James, Jr.  Dr. Cummings was Chief of Surgery at New York University Medical Center.  He referred to his son as Jimmy, and so Philip and Jeremy called the boy Jimmy as well.  It was a foregone conclusion that Jimmy would be admitted.  He was the school’s first non-Caucasian student in its long history.

While he and Jeremy were reviewing the next file, Philip said, “Wow.”

“What?” Jeremy asked.

“There’s a Samuel Whiting, Jr. and his son Joshua waiting outside.  My next door neighbor in New York is Samuel Whiting, Sr.  He has a son who would be about thirty-seven or eight, and a grandson named Josh.  I wonder if that’s them out there.”

“Well, let’s start the interview, and we’ll find out.”

Sam and Josh came into the room and Sam did a double take.  “Philip is that you?” he asked.

“None other.”  The two men hugged each other and Philip could feel Sam’s package pushing against him.

After they were all seated, Philip observed, “You came without Mary.  How is she doing?”

“We’re divorced Philip.  She’s leaving choice of a school to me, and I have custody of Josh.  It seems she’s moving to London to be with her new boyfriend, a Brit.”

“Sorry,” Philip mumbled.

“Don’t be.  It’s for the best.”  I’m free now to live my life as I’ve always wanted to.” Sam gave Philip a knowing look.

That last statement, and the look in Sam’s eyes, set off fireworks in Philip’s head.  It was pregnant with hidden meanings and nuances, especially when it occurred to Philip that Sam, Jr. was probably the guy who his Dad was sucking, when he accidently came upon them fifteen years ago.

“Let’s get down to business,” Jeremy said suddenly.  Philip detected some irritation in his voice.

When the interview was concluded, Philip asked Sam when he was returning to New York, and where he was staying.

“I’m at the Boca Raton Hotel and Resort,” he said.  “I hear they have an excellent restaurant.  How about joining us for dinner tonight, Philip?  We are leaving early tomorrow morning.”

“I’d be delighted.”

“Wonderful, you can get there at 6 PM, if that’s convenient.”

“It’s a date.  Let me walk you to your car.”  Philip glanced at Jeremy.  If looks could kill, he’d be dead.

Philip walked the Whitings to their rented vehicle.  He started to shake Sam’s hand, but Sam grabbed him in a bear hug, and again he could feel Sam’s package.

When he returned to Jeremy’s office to see if Jeremy needed him any more today, Jeremy was scowling, and wouldn’t talk to him.

“I told you not to count on me to be the one to settle down with,” Philip announced loudly.  He started to leave, but Jeremy stopped him.

“I’m sorry,” he apologized.  “I don’t know what came over me.  I have no right to be so possessive.  I’m OK now, and you’re free to leave.”
