Chapter 10

Will He Or Won’t He?

When Billy and Bobby were in bed, I suggested that Randy and I go to bed as well.  We went to the bedroom and I went to take my shower first.  As I was shampooing my hair, I had a sudden thought, ‘How much more is my water bill going to be with the four of us living here?’

I walked into the bedroom drying my hair and Randy chuckled, “Advertising the merchandise, Mr. Adler?”

“No, Mr. Taylor, I forgot to take clean briefs with me.  Go get your shower.  I’m exhausted.”

Randy came into the bedroom in similar attire as I had and I watched as he put on a pair of my briefs.  I was jealous.  He filled them far better than I did.

I remembered to set the alarm and I was up before my three hired men.  I went to terrorize Bobby and Billy, but they weren’t any fun.  The popped out of bed without any complaint except Billy asked, “Dad, do we really gotta go to school?”

I sighed, “I’m afraid that you will have to go back to kindergarten, if you don’t go to school and get your report cards.”

Billy moaned, “Dad, all Mr. Dailey is going to do is to tell us how stupid we are and say that we are only going to be able to go to sixth grade, because he was such a nice guy.  Dad, that man shouldn’t be a teacher.  I hope I have a good teacher next year.  I hope I get Ms Dancer.”

As we were eating breakfast, I pointed at Randy, “Mr. Taylor, you will be at the school at noon so you can take us to lunch, and you can bring Billy and Bobby home.”

The morning went fine, and I swear, each of the children brought me something to eat as a thank you gift.  I was thinking that Billy and Bobby were going to get fat.”

After the students were dismissed, teacher’s started to come to my room, asking to be checked out so they could leave.  I reminded them that they were not to be cleared to leave until after four o’clock.  Heather Sumter got huffy and yelled, “We have things to do and our kids are going to be home.  The teachers in Bellwood aren’t treated like this.”

I looked at her, “Then perhaps you should apply to teach in the Bellwood system, or wouldn’t they hire you.  The Superintendent said that no one was to be checked out until after four o’clock and that’s the way it’s going to be.  In fact, I would guess that it will be late tonight or tomorrow before I clear you.  Heather, since you seem to be so vocal, you might want to pass the word that anyone who leaves, who isn’t properly cleared to leave, will be terminated.”

Unfortunately, Billy and Bobby had witnessed what had transpired. but fortunately, Randy arrived, “It’s time to go get some food.”

I went to the office and Gloria looked at me, “Mr. Adler, you’re in for a rough afternoon.  The phone has been ringing off the hook with parents wanting to talk to the principal.  I informed them that you wouldn’t be available until after one o‘clock.”

“Gloria, what did I do to deserve this treatment?”

Gloria chuckled, “Billy and Bobby, take Mr. Adler and make sure he eats a good lunch.  It may be the last meal that he ever eats.”

We went to the closest restaurant to the school which was Arby’s.  That was a mistake, because two carloads of teachers from the school arrived.  Boy did I get the looks as they walked by with their food.  I thought, ‘I’ll probably hear about this later.’

When we left the restaurant, I looked at Randy and the two boys.  “Guys, I don’t know what time I’ll get home tonight, so go ahead and eat without me.  I’ll eat when I get there.”

When I arrived at the office, there were three people sitting in the chairs.  Gloria looked at me, “Mr. Adler, these people are waiting to talk to you.  I looked at the visitor’s log to see who had arrived first.  “Mr. Long, I believe you arrived first.  Please come into the office.”

When he was seated I could tell that he was very agitated, “Mr. Long, what can I do for you?”

He lit into me good.  “Hank, what happened to this school?  It used to be the best in the district, but I’m beginning to think that it’s the now at bottom of the elementary schools.”

I had two of the Long’s children and I hadn’t had a problem with the parents.  “Mr. Long, what is it that has you so upset.”

He handed me a report card, “Read the comments and you will see why I'm upset.  You had Clay and you know that he is not a bad student.  He may not be the most intelligent student, but he’s not nearly as bad as this Dailey person makes him out to be.”

I read the comment that Mr. Dailey had written and was embarrassed not only by what the comment said, but also by how poorly it was written.  “Mr. Long, may I make a copy of the report card.”

Mr. Long had no problem with my making a copy.  I went to the copy room and made a copy.  “Mr. Long, I’ll do what I can to rectify the problem.  I’m only the acting principal, so I really don’t have much authority.”

“Thanks, Mr. Adler, I would appreciate anything that you can do.”

I ushered Mr. Long to the door and there were now five persons sitting waiting.  It was three o’clock before there were no more visitors waiting.  I asked Gloria if she could pull Billy’s file for me.  I was curious as to what comments Dailey had written on it.  I couldn’t believe what it says.  “Billy tends to be lazy and doesn’t take school seriously.  He’ll never go far.”

I was incensed and was making a copy of the report card when Dr. Brown arrived with Dr. Hunter, the assistant superintendent for Human Resources, Dr. Blair, assistant superintendent for Curriculum Development, and Paula Godwin, the President of the district’s education association.

I invited them into the office but Superintendent Brown shook his head no, “Mr. Adler, please call the staff together in the media center.  We’ve had some calls from irate parents.  Mrs. Hawkins indicated that you have already been confronted by more than twenty parents and she has received calls from others.”

I went and got the copies I had made of the report cards of children whose parents had come to see me.  You might want to see why parents are upset.  I handed the copies to Dr. Brown and as he read them, he passed them along.

I looked at Paula, “Paula, why are you here?”

“Hank, I’ve had three calls from this building since this morning.  One wanting to file a grievous for being unfairly put on probation, and two complaining that they couldn’t get checked out until after four o’clock.  Superintendent Brown asked me to sit in on the meeting to perhaps alleviate further problems.”

I need to tell you that Paula and I have been friends for a long time and we’re both kindergarten teachers.  I also happen to be the treasurer for the Education Association.”

When we arrived in the media center, the staff was assembled except for Larry Dailey and Heather Sumter.  Dr. Brown looked at me, “Mr. Adler, I believe we are missing some people.”

“Yes sir.  Mrs. Sumter and Mr. Dailey are not here.”

Superintendent Brown went to the intercom and pressed the all call button, “This is Superintendent Brown, would Mr. Dailey and Mrs. Sumter please report to the media center immediately.”

Heather appeared looking a little flustered, but Dailey arrived swaggering as if he was the king of the hill.

When everyone was seated, Dr. Brown started, “For starters, Dr. Hunter has pulled all of your evaluations and they are going to be scrutinized.  I took the opportunity to read two of them and they are so far out of whack that even a blind person could see how phony they are.  Mr. Hamilton will no longer be working in the district and I seriously doubt that the man will ever be employed in any educational institution.  I believe that Mrs. Godwin has some things to say to you, as your Education Association president.

Paula stood, “I’ve had three calls from this building today crying the blues.  I would like to remind you that the teachers of this district voted to work tomorrow, Saturday, instead of having to return on Monday of next week.”

Heather stood, “I didn’t agree with that and it shouldn’t apply to me, since I’m not a member of the association.”

Dr. Hunter answered, “Mrs. Sumter, the Board of Education has recognized the Education Association as the bargaining agent for all teachers of the district.  You are doing a disservice to your fellow teachers by not being a member of the association.  Your contract calls for you to work 180 days, so therefore you’re expected to be in attendance tomorrow or take a vacation day.  As I recall, you’ve already been gone quite a large number of days this year.”

Heather started to look a little piqued.

Dr. Brown held up the copies of comments that I had made copies of.  “I have never read so many negative comments on report cards.  No wonder parents are upset.  Mr. Dailey, yours are the worst.  I haven’t read all of the comments, but if they are all as bad as the ones I’ve read, the parents have every right to be upset.  If you can’t say anything positive then don’t say anything.  If there was a problem you should have already discussed the problem with the child‘s parent.”

I stood, “Dr. Brown, might I say something?”

Dr. Brown nodded, “Mr. Dailey, I just read what you had written on Billy Taylor’s report card.  You are so far off base that it is obvious that you have no interest in children.  Billy is living with me temporarily, and I can assure you that he is anything but lazy.  He has been up every morning helping with the chores around the farm before he comes to school.  I suggest that you are the person who might be lazy, since you seem to always be the last teacher to arrive each morning.”

Mr. Dailey jumped up, “That’s a fucking lie.”

I looked at the assembled people, “I apologize for Mr. Dailey’s vulgar mouth.  Larry, remember, I have morning duty and I’ve seen you arrive most mornings, just before the tardy bell rings.  I also know that you’re one of the first to leave every afternoon, because I see you walking by my windows.”

Dr. Brown frowned, “Mr. Adler, I’ve changed my mind, no one is to be checked out before noon tomorrow.   Mr. Dailey, I want you in my office at eight o’clock in the morning.  Mr. Adler, let’s go back to your office so we can talk in private.”

Mr. Bloom spoke up, “Why is it that you put Hank in charge.  He’s a relatively young teacher.  There are some us who’ve been around twice as long as or more than he has.”

Dr. Hunter answered, “Mr. Adler is the only one on this staff who has his certification in education administration.”

When we walked into the office, Dr. Brown looked at Gloria, “Mrs. Hawkins, please advise the staff that they need to sign out here in the office tonight before they leave, and sign in the morning when they arrive.”

When we were in the principal’s office, Dr. Brown had a funny look, “Mr. Adler, please be in my office tomorrow morning at 8:30.  We have some things to take care of.  That way these people can’t badger you, trying to get them signed out.”

After the three persons from the central office had departed, Paula looked at me, “Hank, you’ve created a fine mess.  You’ll need to keep me advised of what’s happening.  You can send me updates when you send the copies of the financial statements.  We’ll need to get together to make plans for next year.  I’ll see you later.”

I walked Paula to the door and Gloria handed me a stack of messages, “Hank, these people want you to call them.”

I looked at a couple of them, “Gloria, do you think it would be too tacky if I called them from home, tonight or tomorrow?  I have some things that I need to do in my room.  The children’s cumulative folders are sitting out and they need to be locked in the files.”

Gloria grinned, “I informed the persons that you were extremely busy and it might be sometime tomorrow before you could call them.  They’d probably be really impressed if you would call them on a Friday evening.”

I finally left the building at five and the only person around was Ada, the night custodian.

When I arrived at the farm, I changed my clothes and went to find the guys.  When Bobby saw me, he whispered, “Dad, go talk to Billy.  He’s really upset.  So is Daddy.”

I went to the chicken house and Billy had tears streaming down his face.  I hugged him, “Billy don’t be upset.  I know what the prick said about you on your report card.  I’ve already told him that he had no idea what he was talking about and I’m going to make him change it or I’ll change it myself.  Mr. Dailey won’t be teaching at our school next year, and I’ll make sure that you have Ms Dancer for a teacher next year.”

Billy looked up at me, “Dad, how did you know what he said about me?”

“Billy, I don’t think Mr. Dailey said anything nice about anyone.  He’s in big trouble.  After some of your classmates’ parents complained, I pulled your file to see what he said about you.  I have already told the idiot that he was completely wrong.  I’m going to make sure he corrects his comments before he leaves for the year.  If he doesn’t, I’ll take care of them myself.”

“Billy, do you need help?”

“No, I’m almost finished.  You need to go talk to Daddy, he’s really angry.”

I walked to the barn and Randy was cleaning the milking machines.  He didn’t hear me approaching so I put my arms around him and growled, “Give me all you got mister.”

Randy turned around and started to say something and I kissed him on the lips.  “I know why you’re upset, so kiss me and get it out of your system.  I’ve already taken care of the problem.”

I was surprised when he kissed me and I responded.  It wasn’t a gentle kiss at all.  In fact I had to pull away before another part of my body betrayed me.

We finished the work and started toward the trailer.  Billy was coming with the eggs and Bobby was bringing some vegetables from the garden for a salad.  I looked at Randy, “I take it you decided we needed a salad.”

Randy grinned, “Mom was here and she brought some spaghetti sauce and said all we needed to do was to cook the spaghetti noodles and make a salad.  She said to remind you that we were to be at your Uncle Mark’s house tomorrow night for the party.  She told me that you couldn’t even remember your own birthday.”

After dinner, I started to make calls and the reaction was almost always the same.  The people were surprised that I was calling on a Friday night and most of them thanked me for calling and listening to their complaints.

I tried to take copious notes of the conversations but it sometimes got difficult.  I stopped calling at nine o’clock thinking I would take care of the rest of the calls over the weekend.

When Randy and I were in bed, he sat up on his elbows, “Hank, do you suppose we could try that kissing stuff again to make sure I understand the proper techniques of what I’m supposed to do when I’m kissing another guy?  How do you know if you’re doing it correctly?”

I sat up, “The first sign will be that the partner’s penis begin to respond and you will feel as if you want to do even more.  I guess we need to practice so you can see how it is supposed to work.”

I moved on top of him and kissed him making sure that our tongues were well exercised and his penis and mine were responding big time.  I started to maneuver toward his enlarged member and slid his briefs off his body and he was indeed a magnificent specimen.  I went to work to make sure it was operating properly, and he started to get vocal so I stuffed his briefs in his mouth so Billy and Bobby wouldn’t hear him.

He released torrents of liquid from his excited member.  I guess he hadn’t had many opportunities to relieve his anxieties, or whatever, living in a hotel room with the boys.  When I pulled away from his toy, he looked at me and asked, “Hank, is that what love is?”

I shook my head no, “Randy, that wasn’t love.  That was lust and plain old sex.  Love doesn’t necessarily involve sex.”

“Hank, I’m thoroughly confused.  I’ve never had anyone do what you just did.  I should be kicking your butt, but I would like to see if I can make you do what I just did.”

“Randy, it’s getting late and I do have to work tomorrow.  We will still need to take care of the animals, and we do have a party to go to tomorrow night.  Let’s get some sleep, but you probably need to get another pair of shorts so the boys don’t see that obscene thing between your legs since you got the ones you were wearing wet.”

To be continued...

Editor's Notes:  It looks as if things are starting to move forward with the relationship between the dads. Let's hope it goes beyond lust and moves right along to love.  I have a feeling that it will do just that.

I think that some of those teachers are in for a rude awakening.

I hope there is another chapter soon.
