Chapter 2
The Meltdown
I pulled on a pair of clean briefs and went into the living room where the phone was located. The boys had turned the television down so I could talk. They were lying on the floor watching some dumb show.
“Hi Mom, what’s up?”
You need to know my Mom to appreciate this conversation. “So, are you finally going straight or what?”
“Mom you were talking to a ten year old boy.”
“Hank you have exactly ten minutes to explain why you have a ten year old boy in your house. Couldn’t you find someone closer to your own age? After all you are 32.”
“Mom, I not only have Billy who is ten here, but I also have his brother, Bobby, who is eight, here. There are lying on the living room floor, watching television and all they’re wearing is a tee shirt.”
“Hank, your Dad and I will be there in ten minutes. You sound as if you have gone off the deep end.”
“Mom, I’m still sane. It’s the Taylor boys. Their Dad is passed out in my bedroom.”
“Why is their father passed out in your bedroom? Did you drug him or what?”
“Mom, give me a little credit.”
“We’re leaving now.”
I looked at Billy and Bobby, “My parents are coming to check on us. I’ll be right back. I need to put some clothes on.”
Billy looked at me, “Mr. Adler, what do you want us to do? Our clothes are still in the washer and dryer.”
“You guys are fine. My mother and dad saw me when I was your age. I’ll be right back. My parents will just walk in when they get here.”
I went into the bedroom to get a pair of Bermuda shorts and pullover shirt. Mr. Taylor was moaning, “I don’t feel very good. I think I’m going to barf.”
“Well don’t throw up in bed. Here, let me help you to the bathroom.”
Mr. Taylor tried to sit up. “Why am I naked? Did you use my body too?”
“No, the only thing I did to you was to undress you and throw your bloody briefs away before your sons could see them. Here, put these shorts on and I'll help you to the bathroom, since my parents are going to be here shortly.”
“Where’s here?”
“Here is at my farm.”
Mr. Taylor tried to stand, but he was unsteady. “Mr. Taylor, put you hands on my shoulders and I'll help you put the shorts on.”
He yelled, “How did you know that my name was Taylor?”
“Mr. Taylor, we’ll discuss that, when you’re sober. I don’t think you want Billy and Bobby to see you like this.”
That was more than he could handle. He fell back on the bed, “Please tell me that Bobby and Billy didn’t see me like this.”
“Mr. Taylor, unfortunately, they did and they are concerned about you. Now, please, let me help you to the bathroom. My Dad is a doctor and he and my mom will be arriving shortly and perhaps he can recommend something for your hangover and whatever else ails you.”
I took Mr. Taylor to bathroom, “Do what you need to do while I go check on your sons.”
When I got to the living room, Bobby and Billy were sitting between my parents on the sofa. “Mom, take Billy and Bobby to the kitchen and fix them some hot chocolate. Dad, I need for you to check something.”
Mother feigned as if she was going to faint, “Come on Bobby and Billy, see how our son, Henry, treats us. He treats as if we were Cinderella and Cinderfella. He’s always bossing us around.”
Mother was fast winning the boys to her side. When they had gone to the kitchen, I told Dad as much as I knew about Mr. Taylor. “Dad, I don’t know this for sure, but I’m guessing that he was drugged and totally defiled. Is their anything that you can give him to make him sleep through the night, so that the boys don’t know what is happening?”
Dad and I went into the bathroom and there were puddles of blood. Dad reacted immediately, “Hank, call 911. This man is bleeding, and I can’t tell where it’s coming from for sure. Tell your mother to take the boys to our house now. The boys should definitely not see this mess.”
Dad handed me the keys to their vehicle. I called 911 and once they were on their way, I went to the kitchen, “Mom, Dad said you were to take the boys to your house for the night.”
Mom must have realized that it was important, “See, how my son treats me. He’s always telling me what to do. Come on, guys, let‘s bust out of this jail.”
Billy objected, “But what about our Dad? We don’t have any clothes that we can wear.”
Mom was so cool, “I’ll pull out some of Henry’s old clothes and you can wear them. I’m sure that between Henry and his father they can make sure your Daddy doesn’t get into too much trouble.”
Mom and the boys had only been gone about ten minutes when the ambulance arrived and in no time at all the EMT personnel had Mr. Taylor hooked to an IV and oxygen. Dad and I followed them to the hospital in my car. Mr. Taylor was taken to the Operating Room immediately. The people at the hospital recognized my Dad because he was board certified cardio vascular surgeon so we had the best treatment possible.”
Doctor Lowe, who was leading the team in the Operating Room, came and reported to us, “The young man was bleeding from both his stomach and his anal area. He has lost a lot of blood. His blood tests show that he had ingested some strong drugs that have caused him to start bleeding in his stomach. He obviously was invaded in his rectal area. The best thing for him now is to rest and let his body take over the healing process. He is resting quietly, but he keeps muttering, ‘Please, don’t let my sons see me like this.’ He’s asleep now and he should rest quietly until morning. We are going to keep him in the Intensive Care unit through the night.”
Dad looked at me, “Hank, we might as well go home. Mr. Taylor will be receiving the best care possible.”
I dropped Dad off at their house and drove to the farm. I was thinking, ‘Ron, are you trying to tell me something?’
When I got to the trailer, I was fine until I went into the bathroom and saw the blood, I wanted to scream. I started acting like my mother and put on some gloves and started to clean. I sure didn’t want Billy and Bobby to see what had happened to their Dad.
When I had everything cleaned, I plopped down on the bed where the boys were going to sleep. My mind kept conjuring up all sorts of scenarios as to what might have happened to Mr. Taylor. Unfortunately, I didn’t remember to set the alarm.
I was awakened by someone shaking me, “Mr. Adler, we gotta go take care of the animals.”
“But I’m tired, they can wait a few minutes. Wait a minute! How did you get here? What time is it anyway.”
“It’s almost eight o’clock and your Mother brought us. Now get up and help us take care of the animals.”
I climbed out of bed, went to the bathroom and put on my work clothes. The two
boys followed me to the barn. Nothing was said and they started to take care of
the chores they thought they could do. We had just finished the milking when
the milk truck pulled in and the driver called out, “A little late this morning
aren’t you, Mr. Adler. You must have had a hard night.”
I showed the guys how to wash and sanitize the milk tank, and we went to see what my mother was up to. We walked into the kitchen and my mother commanded, “Get your butts ready for breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day.”
The three of us went to the bathroom and washed our hands. Bobby looked up at me, “Da.., I mean Mister Adler, is your mother always going to be telling us what to do?”
“Probably, you just have to learn how to ignore her.”
Mother had fixed a big breakfast for us and the guys were chowing down when the phone rang. I answered, “This is the Adler residence. How may I help you?”
“Mr. Adler, this is the Medical Center. We were told to call you when Mr. Taylor was ready to be released by the Doctor. He’ll be ready to go home in an hour.”
I turned to the guys, “Your Dad will be coming home from the hospital in an hour. We need to make sure that everything is ready for him.”
Bobby frowned, “But we didn’t know that he was in the hospital. What happened?”
Bless my Mother, “Guys, your Daddy had an accident and lost a lot of blood. My husband and son decided that he needed to go to the hospital. Why don’t the two of you take care of the dishes while I talk to my son.”
The guys took the dishes to the kitchen and my Mother went into attack mode. “Henry, I don’t suppose you would care to explain what happened. Those two young boys are precious. They were concerned that you couldn’t take care of the farm by yourself. They talked the entire way to the house last night and then came and awakened your father and me this morning demanding that they had to come help you.”
“Mommy, I have no idea what’s happening.”
“Don’t Mommy me.”
“Mom, I have no idea what happened to the boys’ father. Why don’t you take the boys to get some clothes. They told me that that they only have two sets of clothes that fit them and one of them is at some hotel. While you have them shopping, I’ll go pick up their Dad. I have a feeling that he will be spending the next couple of days in bed. The boys don’t need to know what happened to him.”
Bobby and Billy returned and Billy asked, “Mr. Adler, are we going to be staying here with you or are we going back to that old hotel?”
My Mother answered before I could, “You need to stay here to take care of Henry. That way I won’t have to worry about him all the time. Come on, we need to go shopping while Henry picks up your Dad. We’ll stop and pick up Henry’s father and take him along so he can carry the packages.”
Mother had the boys out the door of the trailer before I could say anything.
I changed out of my work clothes and put on some clean clothes. I packed a small bag with loose fitting clothes for Mr. Taylor, as well as his shoes.
When I arrived at the hospital, I was directed to Mr. Taylor’s room. As I arrived at the room, Doctor Lowe was just coming out of the room. “Hi Hank, I take it that you will be taking Mr. Taylor home with you. He is in no condition to take care of himself, just yet. Where are his two sons that he keeps mumbling about?”
“Billy and Bobby are now under the control of my Mother and Father. They’re probably being spoiled rotten as we speak.”
Doctor Lowe laughed, “At least your Mother has someone to worry about other than you. Hank, Mr. Taylor will probably be sleeping the rest of the day. He has been heavily sedated. When he asks for something to eat or drink, just give him things such gelatin, soups and anything that would be easy on the digestive tract. Watch for signs of blood both from his mouth, and the rectal area. He was pretty well torn up. Do you have any idea what happened to him?”
“No sir, I had never met the man until yesterday afternoon when he came to the school to pick up his sons.”
“Hank, I really think that you should contact the police when Mr. Taylor is able to tell them what happened. What happened to him was in no way an accident.”
“Hank, you’re lucky you have a doctor you can call day and night. I’ll sign his release forms and send an orderly to help you get him dressed so you can take him home. I think you should make an appointment for Mr. Taylor to see a urologist and an internist as soon as you can. Your Dad can give you some idea as to whom you should call.”
The orderly arrived, “Hey Hank, how you doin? Haven’t seen you for a while. Doctor Lowe said that you’re here to collect Mr. Taylor.”
“Hi Kenny, the farm keeps me pretty busy. I thought you would be in med school by now.”
Kenny laughed, “I will be by this time next week. Today is my last day here as an orderly. Did you bring some clothes for your patient?”
“Yep, let’s get the varmint dressed so I can get him home, before his sons get there.”
Kenny looked a little surprised, “Your trailer is going to be overflowing with people isn’t it?”
“Cuz, it isn’t that bad. His sons are only eight and ten.”
After we got Mr. Taylor dressed, which was quite a task, I went to sign him out and get the car. Kenny met me at the entrance with Mr. Taylor in a wheelchair. It was a major task getting him into the car. Kenny looked at me, “Hank, how are you going to get Mr. Taylor into the trailer? I’ll call Drake and have him meet you at the trailer. He needs something to do to keep him out of trouble while I’m working.”
Drake was at the trailer when I arrived. It’s a good thing he was there, because it took both of us to get Mr. Taylor into the trailer. We had just gotten him undressed when Mr. Taylor mumbled, “Gotta go to the bathroom.”
Drake rolled Mr. Taylor on his side and I took Mr. Taylor’s penis and put it in the urine collection bottle that Kenny had thoughtfully sent home with us. I had just put the head of his penis in the bottle when the urine began to flow. Drake looked at me, “Hank, you need to buy some surgical gloves if you are going to have to do that very often. Who knows where that thing might have been?”
After we got Mr. Taylor settled, I washed my hands with antiseptic soap. “Drake, let me fix you a sandwich since I know that your boyfriend is working. I hate to always eat alone.”
We were talking as we were eating, “Drake, what are your plans now that you’re finished with dental school?”
“Hank, I’ve decided to go into practice with a friend of my family here in town, so your cousin and I can continue to shack up while he’s going to medical school. Is there anything going between you and this mysterious Mr. Taylor?”
“No, I never met him until yesterday afternoon.”
Our conversation was interrupted by the arrival of two exuberant boys. Billy came in the door, “Mr. Adler, Grandpa and Grandma kept buying us things. We have so many new things that they won’t fit in the trailer. Who’s he and is Daddy here?”
“Yes, your Daddy is sleeping. He’s Mr. Young. Let’s go help my parents unload the rest of the car and what happened to your hair?”
Bobby put his hands on my knees, “Grandpa made us get a haircut at this fancy place. Our Dad always just gave us buzz jobs with a razor.”
I looked at Blake, “I think I’m in trouble.”
To be continued...
Editor's Notes: As Bobby Vinton used to sing, “Trouble is my middle name.”
I have a feeling that Bobby and Billy are going to be living on a farm and that their Father is going to be living there too. I am also guessing that they won't be living in that trailer for very long. We will just have to see what happens in the next chapter, won't we?
