Chapter 8

The Day of Confrontations

Zack here.

Mark and I continued to talk and find out about each other as we were driving along.  Mark announced, “Zack, this is the last rest area before we get off the interstate.  I need to go to the bathroom.”

“As do I.  Let’s hit the bathroom facilities, and then you can drive the remainder of the way, since you know the territory.  Besides, I just want to watch your beautiful body.”  I laughed as I parked the van.

We visited the restroom facilities.  I finished first and was outside walking around, stretching my legs.  Mark was finishing up when he was approached by an aggressive gentleman.  The uninvited guest started to manhandle Mark.  Mark used the training, which Beau insisted he take, to neutralize the gentleman.  When Mark came out of the facility, I could tell that something was wrong.

Mark shook his head, “Let’s get out of here quickly.  Some creep just tried to put the make on me.”

We crawled into the van.  We did not talk very much until we approached Fremont.  Mark drove us to his parents’ house.  We went inside and Mark went upstairs.  He came down, “It looks like Matt and Luke are already here so we need to find someplace else to stay.”

I was baffled, “Why don’t we just go to a motel?”

“Zack, Beau would have a stroke if we did that.  We would be better off if we spent the night in the van.  Come on; let’s go check with my Grandparents to see what we should wear to this shindig.”

Mark drove to this big house on Dakota Circle.  We went up to the door and Mark rang the doorbell.”

The door opened and there stood a distinguished looking gentleman.  Mark hugged him, “Uncle David, I thought that you and Uncle Boris would be here.  Uncle David, I would like to you to meet my friend, Zack Jackson.  He is my boss’ foster brother.”

I shook hands with Uncle David, and he ushered us into the kitchen where Mark introduced me to those others who were sitting, eating.  “Everyone, I would like to introduce my new boss’ foster brother, Zack Jackson.”  Mark then introduced his Grandparents, Peter and Marilyn Leavitt and Uncle David’s partner, Dr. Boris Reznek.

Mrs. Leavitt spoke up, “Guys, make yourselves a sandwich and get something to drink and join us.”

We did as we were told and sat down and the questions began.  The senior Mr. Leavitt started, “Mark, what new job?”

Mark took a deep breath, “I am now a Nano.”

Uncle David looked at Mark like he had gone off the deep end, “What’s a Nano?”

I started to laugh, “Uncle David and everyone, I have to tell you what happened at the interviews for someone to take care of Uncle Ty’s four children.  The first lady came in and asked if we were a house of black queers.  Uncle Ty ushered her out saying, “I will not have my children exposed to such language.”

“The second interview was a lady who came and said, “Here is when I will work and this is what I will do and won’t do.  Dad Tip showed her out, telling her that her services would not be needed.

“When Mark arrived, it was like a breath of fresh air had floated.  Dad Tip knew him from the fitness center, and Mark pushed all of the right buttons, because all four children instantly fell in love with him.  Billy, who is five, decided he couldn’t be a Nanny because he was not a female, he wasn’t ugly and he didn’t seem mean, so he would have to be a Nano.”

Everyone was laughing and Mark’s grandfather asked, “So how much does a Nano make, these days?”

Mark smiled, “Mr. Jefferson offered me a $1000.00 a week, plus room and board.  So I guess that would equate to approximately $1300.00 a week.

It was stone silent.  Finally, Uncle David asked, “What does Mr. Jefferson do that he can pay that kind of money?”

Mark looked at me and I started, “Uncle Ty is a lawyer who is just starting his own practice.  My Dad Tip is an obstetrician and we all live in a condominium now that Uncle Ty and his four children have moved in with Dad and me.”

Mark laughed, “What Zack forgot to tell you was that his Uncle Ty is Tyler Jefferson, the gentleman who just retired from the Kansas City football team.”

Mark’s Grandmother started to laugh.  “I think Beau is about to meet his match.  We need to get dressed for the wedding.”

Mark asked, “What do we wear to this wedding?  I have never been invited to a very informal wedding before.”

Mrs. Leavitt looked at us. “You guys could probably wear what you have on.  Why don’t you put your things in the back bedroom upstairs and freshen up before we have to go to the church.  I hope you won’t mind sharing a queen sized bed.  By the way, I hope you brought your swimming suits with you.  Beau is opening the pool for the reception.”

I guess I was looking as confused as I felt, “Where is this reception going to be?  People don’t usually swim at wedding receptions, especially not in March.”

Mark’s grandparents were laughing.  His Grandfather spoke up, “Mark, take Zack out on the deck and show him Beau’s backyard.”

We stepped out on the deck with Uncle Boris.  There was a humongous circus tent filling the entire yard next door.  I turned and said, “This wedding is getting more curious all the time.”

We walked back into the house and Uncle David was standing there laughing. “So are you two contemplating forming a relationship?”

Mark and I started to laugh, I motioned to Mark and he started, “Uncle David and Uncle Boris, Zack and I have known each other approximately 16 hours.  We don’t even know if we are compatible.”

“Mother is thinking otherwise, especially since you didn’t resist sleeping in the same bed.”

I looked at Mark, “See, I told you, I should have stayed in a motel.”

Uncle Boris shook his head, “Hog wash, that’s the silliest thing I have heard lately.  Now for the important things, do you gentlemen need swim suits?  We have some Speedos that we keep here.  You both look to be a little larger than us, so you should fill them quite nicely.”

“Is sex all that anyone in this family thinks about?  I heard about you and you can look all you want but don’t touch.  Now show us yours.” I countered.

The four of us were standing there laughing when Grandpa Leavitt came in.  “Guys, you need to get ready, Marilyn is almost ready and you know how she is about being punctual.”

We went to our rooms and Mark and I changed into Dockers, a dress shirt and a sweater.  When we came down the stairs, Uncle David and Uncle Boris appeared in similar attire.  Since I had Dad’s van, I offered to drive to the church.

When we arrived at the church, we were greeted by one of the most stunning young men I have ever seen.  He hugged Mark’s grandparents and Uncle David and Uncle Boris.  He kissed Mark and shook my hand, “Hi, I’m Chip”

I was amazed at his openness, but replied, “I’m Zack.”

He turned and held his arm out so Mark’s grandmother could take it and he escorted us down the aisle to the front of the sanctuary.  “Beau would like for you to be seated here, because he considers you as part of his extended family.  Why don’t you four young men go in first, so that Grandpa and Grandma Leavitt can sit on the aisle?”

I went in first, since I felt like the outsider and Mark followed me.  Mark started to fill me in about everyone who was there.  “Mark, I feel so out of place.  I shouldn’t be sitting here.”

“Nonsense, you are a house guest of my grandparents, and Beau knows what he wants.”

The church was overflowing and it was almost time for the ceremony to begin when we were joined by a great looking couple and two handsome young men.

Mark introduced me, “Zack, I would like to introduce my oldest brother Matt and his lovely wife Jeanette, next is my brother Luke, who go stuck in the tree, and the great looking young man on the end is my brother John.”

This is my new boss’ brother, Zack Jackson.”  No one had time to say anything because just then, the organ started.

Mark leaned over and whispered, “The organist is Dr. Jeff Wilson, who is Beau’s foster brother.”

Two older ladies were escorted down the aisle, one by a young man and the other by a young woman.  The young couple was dressed in jeans and red and white checked cowboy shirts.  Mark leaned over to me and whispered, “That’s the bride and the groom and their grandmothers.”

Dear Readers, we need to break away from Fremont, where the wedding is happening.  It seems that things are beginning to get very interesting in Kansas City.

Ty here.

Tip and I got the children into the van and drove to the theatre where Pinocchio was playing.  We had just finished lunch, so we decided not to buy any snacks.  We purchased our tickets and went to find a seat.  We had just gotten seated when Barbie decided she had to go to the bathroom; so I took here and Becky to the bathroom while Tip stayed with Billy and Bobby.

I was getting frustrated because it seemed to be taking a long time for the girls to come out of the bathroom.  I was leaning against the wall when a policeman came up to me, “Sir, I need to ask you to move on or I will have to arrest you for loitering.

I started to protest, “But I am waiting for my daughters to come out of the bathroom.”

“That’s not what that lady over there says.”  The officer pointed to the lady who had accused us of being black queers last night.

Before I could say anything, I heard a voice, “Hi, Mr. Jefferson, is there a problem?”  Tony the young man from the grocery store asked.

“Tony, would you ask that young lady with you to go into the bathroom and see what is taking my daughters, Becky and Barbie, so long.  And Tony would you go into the theatre and get my brother, Mr. Washington, and my two sons.  They are sitting in the center section on the left side about halfway down.”

Tony whispered something to his lady friend and left to find Tip and the guys.  The young lady went into the bathroom and returned with four giggling girls.  We were to find out later that the other two young ladies were Tony’s sisters.  Before I could say anything, Tip arrived with Tony and took the offensive.

Tip didn’t mince any words, “Officer, do you know who you are detaining?  That is Mr. Tyler Jefferson, the former Kansas City Chief and these are my brother’s four children.  Let me get your badge number, and I’ll call your chief and report you for misusing your authority.”

The officer pulled away, “But sir, the manager called us.”

Tip was relentless, “Then get the manager.  He has some explaining to do.”

The manager, who had been standing there watching came over and asked, “Is there a problem, sir?”

Tip ignored him and turned to Tony, “Tony, would you please take the children into the theatre to about the same place we were sitting before, and we’ll join you shortly.  The children do not need to hear this drivel.”

Tony and his friend left with the six children, and Tip turned up the prod, “What right do you have of accusing Mr. Jefferson falsely, especially in front of his children?  Mr. Jefferson is a lawyer and should think about suing all of you who have been involved, for defamation of his character.  Now why did this happen in the first place?”

The manager was shaking, “Sir, that lady over there said she thought Mr. Jefferson was a child molester.”

Tip looked at the lady and took a deep breath, “Sir, that is the same lady who came into our home last night, and accused my brothers and me of being queers in front of Mr. Jefferson’s children.  Officer, we should probably have you arrest that lady so she can not vent her evil venom on anybody else, but we are not going to waste our time.  Come on Ty; let’s make sure the children are okay?”

Tip looked back, “Lady, if you ever interfere in my family’s affairs again, you will find yourself in court.”

I followed Tip into the theatre.  The young people were sitting in the same row and had saved us two seats in the middle.  We had just sat down when the manager came in rolling a cart with ten boxes of popcorn and ten drinks.

He then handed us ten free passes which we could use as often as we wanted.  They were good for one year.

Bobby looked at the gentleman, “Does that mean that anyone could use them.”

“Why do you ask, young man?”

Bobby had something on his mind, “Well, I was thinking that Daddy and Uncle Tip might be busy sometimes, and our Nano would be bringing us to the movie and maybe our cousin Zack will be coming with us.  Would it be permissible for them to use the passes?”

“Young man, they may certainly use the passes.”

Bobby smiled at the man, “Thank you very much for being so generous, sir.”

“It is a small price for the turmoil your family was put through today.  Now sit back and relax, the movie is beginning.”

I was sitting there thinking, ‘What else can happen today?  What’s happening with Zack and Mark in Fremont?’  Finally I told myself, ‘Ty, sit back and enjoy the movie.’

Editor's Notes:

Why do people have to try to push their prejudices off on other people?  I guess that there have always been bigots and there will always be bigots.  I can only hope that as time goes by, the genes of the people that are like that are not allowed to be passed on to the next generation of people, and that sort of thing will finally stop.  Well I can dream can't I?

It is so nice to know that Beau has found his life partner. I knew he would turn out wonderfully.  I wonder if Mark and Zack are going to become a couple. That would be so cool. They are both fine young boys, or should I say fine young men?  Anyway, Once again, I want to than E Walk for another wonderful chapter.

I want to publicly state that all of your on line friends wish the very best for you, and want you to know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.  We all love you and support you and we all thank you for bringing us the wonderful stories that have enhanced our lives, and we expect and demand many more of them.
