Chapter 6

Man Around the House

When Pat returned from parking his car, he complained, “I need to go to bed early since I’m going to need to leave at the crack of dawn so I can go back to the apartment and get a clean uniform.”

Shane quipped, “Don’t worry Dad, we understand that you old people have things to do and take care of before you fall asleep.  I’ll make sure that you’re up and out of here before anyone knows you were here.  S. S., me and Trav aren’t going to be your slaves tomorrow, so you need to get your butt to bed to make sure Dad doesn’t break his nose when he falls out of bed.  He’s use to sleeping with sidebars.  He tosses all over the place.  You’ll probably be black and blue in the morning from where he hit you.”

Pat took a deep breath, “Shane, that was totally uncalled for.”

Shawn spoke, “Dad, Shane was being his obnoxious self.  We all know that he was teasing.  Go to bed and we’ll be fine.  We’re all big boys.”

Travis started to giggle, “Speak for yourself, Shawn.  We aren’t all as lucky as you.”

When Pat and I were in bed, it was apparent that neither of us was really comfortable with what was happening.  I leaned over and whispered, “Pat, are you as scared as I am?”

Pat put his arms around me, “Steve, I’m scared shitless.  I have a lot more to lose than you, should someone find out what’s happening.  The county commissioners could throw my ass out and I’d never be able to find another job in law enforcement.  You, on the other hand, have the royalties from your books coming in.”

I leaned down and kissed Pat to stop him from talking.  “Patrick, if anyone questions you, tell them I seduced you.”

Patrick pushed me away, “I think it would be better to be honest and say that it was a seduction caused by confused hormones that caused both of us to lose sight of the consequences.”

I sat up, “Now I understand where Shane gets his wit from.  Lie still and let me take care of your neglected needs.”

I started to administer to Pat’s body as best as I knew how and he  wasn’t resisting at all.  In fact, he was responding big time.  When I reached my target it took no time for the volcano to erupt.  Since this was a new experience for me, I had no idea what to do with what was in my mouth, I swallowed it so there wouldn’t been any telltale signs on the sheets.

Pat was breathing hard, “Steve, you can’t imagine how intense that was for me.  I felt as if you were sucking my blood from me.  I don’t think I can reciprocate right now.”

We were lying there and Pat asked, “Steve, is that what love is?”

I kissed him, “Patty, me love, I think that would be classified as sex.  Love doesn’t necessarily involve sex.  Let’s get some sleep so you can get up and move about the country tomorrow.”

I woke up in the middle of the night and something didn’t seem right.  I went to the bathroom and went to check on the guys.  I looked into Nate’s room he and Don were sprawled on the twin beds in their naked splendor.  When I got to Ethan’s room I wasn’t prepared for the sight,  Ethan and Teddy were cuddled in one bed and Shawn and Travis were cuddled in the other bed.  When I checked the third bedroom Mike and Shane were on the two beds.

After witnessing what I had just seen, I had no idea what to think.  I went down to the den and started to write, to take my mind off of what was happening.  Finally, my mind settled down and I was able to write at least a few pages before I crawled on the sofa to rest.

I was awakened the next morning by Pat, “Steve, if I’m going to drive you out of bed, then I won’t be staying here, anymore.”

“Pat, I woke up during the night and had to go to the bathroom.  Something didn’t seem right, so I went to check on the guys.  They were all sleeping, but what I saw rattled me a little.  Ethan and Teddy were cuddled together and Shawn and Travis were cuddled together.  Travis is only fourteen.”

“Steve, you’re over reacting.  There was probably nothing happening.”

We heard people on  the stairs, so I sat up and went into the hallway to see who it was coming down the stairs.  Shawn grinned, “Today is Travis’ fifteenth birthday.  I gave him a present after it was midnight last night.”

I feigned innocence, “Oh, what did you give him?   Couldn’t you wait until we could have a proper party?”

“Don’t worry, Mr. Sloane, I did nothing that would be deleterious to his health,  I just relieved him of some extra pounds that he was carrying around.”

“I take it that Ethan and Teddy were practicing the same maneuvers?”

Travis giggled, “I can’t swear to it, but I would guess so.  There was a whole lot of slurping going on.”

I walked Pat to his car after I put on a pair of shorts and flip flops.  I leaned in and kissed him. “Will you be spending the night again?”

“Steve, I guess I need to, in order to make sure that there is nothing happening in this residence that might land you in jail.”

When we were eating breakfast, Shane started to complain. “S. S., there was so much noise upstairs last night that Mike and I had a difficult time going to sleep.”

“Shane, don’t tell me you heard the ghosts rattling their chains in the attic, too?”

Shane giggled, “Sir, I hate to tell you this, but it wasn’t the attic that sounds were coming from.  Me and Mike had to get up and put cotton balls in our ears in order to go to sleep.”

Travis sighed, “Mr. Sloane, it appears to me that Shane is schizophrenic and is hearing voices.  Maybe you could take him to a dermatologist to see if he or she could help him.”

That comment caused food to fly from at least two mouths, since both Nate and Ethan had been to a dermatologist.  Nate could hardly stop laughing, “Trav, don’t you mean a psychiatrist?”

Travis looked like he was lost, “Well, I suppose Shane could see one of those people too, but I guess he really needs to see a urologist.  He’s going to need all the help he can get.”

I watched as Shane gave Travis the finger, “Up yours, buddy.”

Travis stood, “Not in this lifetime.”

After the other guys left for work, I was apprehensive about how Shane and Travis would get along after the encounter in the morning.  Why I was worried, I don’t know.  I was on the deck writing and I could see the two guys on the dock.  I watched as they got out the canoe and started to take a trip around the lake.

I was so engrossed in my writing that I hadn’t seen the guys return.  I hadn't realized that they were in the area until they opened the deck door and brought out lunch.  As we were eating lunch, Shane asked.  “S.S, if Dad, Shawn and me move in with you, do we have to call you Dad?

“Shane and Travis, you can call me whatever you would like, as long as it’s not Mr. Sloane.”

The guys were taking care of the cleanup when the phone rang.  “This is Steve Sloane.”

“Hi, Dad, we’re on our way home.  You and the guys need to get decent.  Our boss wants to talk to you.  We’ll be there in fifteen minutes.”

I went to tell the guys that we were going to have company, and I decided to put on a sports shirt with my Bermudas and my boat shoes.  Shane and Travis did likewise.  It was a good thing that Nate had called to warn me, because they just walked in with an older lady.

When the lady saw Travis, she asked, “Travis, what are you doing out here in the middle of nowhere with these people?”

Travis grinned, “Mrs. Janowski, this is my new home for at least a little while.  Mr. Sloane is going to be my caretaker.”

Ethan made the introductions, “Dad, this is Mrs. Janowski.  She would like to have a few words with you.  Come on, guys, we need to make sure that we have clean clothes to wear to work tonight.”

Mrs. Janowski didn’t waste any time getting down to business, “Mr. Sloane, your sons told me that you had a problem with them working so much.  I want to tell you how pleased I am with the way they and your nephews and now Shawn have fit into the scheme of the catering business.  They don’t dally away time talking to each other.  I’ll try to be mindful that you don’t want them to work all the time.  I don’t suppose you would consider allowing Travis and Shane come to work for me, would you?”

I looked skeptical, “Mrs. Janowski, I’m not sure how long Travis will be staying here.  He is under the control of the CPA.  Mrs. Hood is handling his case.  As for Shane, he’s only thirteen.  I think you would need to talk to the two boys and see if they’re interested in working.  Let’s go out on the deck and I’ll call them.”

Mrs. Janowski followed me onto the deck.  The guys were all on the dock area wearing Bermuda shorts and nothing else.  “Shane and Travis, Mrs. Janowski would like to speak to you.”

The two guys came up the outside steps.  Shane started, “You rang!”

Travis giggled, “Don’t mind Shane, Mrs. Janowski.  He’s been hearing ghosts.”

I shook my head, “Guys, be serious.  Mrs. Janowski has some questions for you.”

The guys sat down and Mrs. Janowski started with Travis.  “Travis, would you like to come to work for the business if I can obtain permission from Mrs. Hood?”

Travis nodded yes,  “Yes, ma’am, it would be great if I could earn some money.”

Mrs. Janowski took out her phone and made a call, “Hi Norma, it’s Donna Janowski.  I’m here at Mr. Sloane’s summer home. I understand that Travis Hughes would need to get permission from your office to go to work for the catering company. … Oh, I see, well could he work for me until the uncles get here? … Okay, I’ll tell him. … Here’s Mr. Sloane.”

Mrs. Janowski handed me the phone. “This is Steve Sloane.”

“Mr. Sloane, I was able to contact one of Travis’ uncles and they are going to be calling you later tonight.  Keep me advised as to what’s happening.  If Travis wants to earn some money, then put him to work.  I’ll talk to you later.”

I turned off the phone and handed it to Mrs. Janowski, “Travis, you need to check with the other guys to see if you have the proper clothes to wear to work.”

After Travis had departed, Mrs. Janowski turned her attention to Shane, “Shane, Mr. Sloane tells me that you’re only thirteen.  You sure are a handsome young man.  I assumed that you might be as old as the other guys.  If you were to come to work for us, you could only work limited hours because of you age.  Would you be interested in say working twenty hours a week?”

“I’d be very interested but there would be a problem.  That would leave S. S. here by himself and he’d forget to eat.  We keep having to remind him that he needs to go to the bathroom every so often.”

“Shane, I can take care of myself.  I’ve been doing it for fifteen years.  Call your Dad and see what he has to say if you would like to work.”

I handed my cell phone to Shane, “Hi, this is Shane Kincaid.  May I please talk to Sheriff Kincaid. … Oh, he’s on mobile.  I’ll call his cell phone. Thanks.”

Shane dialed another number, “Hey, Dad, it’s Shane. … No, everything’s fine. Mr. Sloane said I needed to check with you if I wanted to work a couple of hours a day. … Dad, I’d really like the opportunity to make a couple dollars, please.”

Shane handed me the phone, “This is Steve.”

“Steve, is Shane serious about working a couple hours a day.”

“Yep, Mrs. Janowski is the boys’ boss and she’s sitting her with Shane and me right now.  We have Travis scrounging for clothes right now.”

“Let me talk to my son again.”

“This is Shane. … Yes, Dad, I understand. … Okay, I’ll tell him.”

Shane looked at Mrs. Janowski, “Ma’am, Dad says I can work, but only a limited number of hours a day and a week.”

Mrs. Janowski stood, “Great, we’ll see you with your brother and the others at the hotel at five.”

After Mrs. Janowski had departed, I looked at Shane, “That doesn’t give us much time to get you properly outfitted.”

We went to where Shawn and Travis were trying to find things in Travis’ belongings, for him to wear.  I asked, “Travis, do we need to buy you anything to wear tonight when we get Shane some clothes?”

“No, sir, all we need to find now are my black loafers.  I know they’re here.  Shane, try on the things on the bed and see if they fit you.  They’re a little tight on me.  I probably have everything that you need.”

Shane threw up his hands, “Great, I’ve had to wear Shawn’s hand- me downs all my life, and now I get to wear Travis’ hand-me downs.  I’m doomed for life of playing the role of second hand Shane.”

I went downstairs and Ethan was there by himself, “Where is everyone else?”

“They’re out sunbathing and I’m manning the washer and the dryer.”

I decided to take the bull by the horn, “Ethan, was what I saw last night a sign that there might be something between you and Teddy Conklin.”

“Dad, I’ve known Teddy for several years, but last night was the first time we had ever been together.  I guess our hormones went whacko and we lost control.  No, we didn't have anal sex, but we experimented with other things.  I’m sorry if we upset you.”

I hugged Ethan, “Son, I was surprised to say the least.  I had no idea that you even knew Teddy.  Speaking of Teddy, where is he?”

“He had to go home.  He had a dentist appointment.  He’s planning to spend the night again, if that’s okay with you?”

“Ethan, I don’t mind if he spends the night, but isn’t it a little uncomfortable to have Shawn and Travis in the same room while you’re doing whatever you’re doing?”

“Dad, aren’t you being a little prudish after the way we are around here most of the time?  Teddy is really a neat guy.  You’ll really like him when you get to know him.”

I watched as the guys departed in the van since there were now seven of them and went to fix dinner.  I was so engrossed in fixing dinner that I hadn't heard anyone enter the house.  I was totally surprised when someone put their arms around me and whispered, “Give me all you got, mister, every last ounce.”

I maneuvered around, and Pat was standing there naked.  “How did you get in here without me hearing you?”

Pat laughed, “I snuck in through the deck door.  You’ll have to change the title of your book to The Case Of the Sneaky Sheriff.  Now give me a kiss and let’s eat.  I haven’t eaten all day.”

I was telling Pat about the day as we were eating.  He looked at me, “I don’t know whether to be happy or upset to think that Shawn and Travis might become a couple.  At least we’re keeping it all in the family.  What’s going to happen to Travis, anyway?”

“Pat, your guess is as good as mine.  Mrs. Hood said she had gotten in touch with one of Travis’ uncles and that he was going to be calling us this evening.”

To be continued...

Editor's Notes:  The story is moving right along, isn't it?  I think Steve and Pat might just find out that they are very compatible.  It also looks as if at least some of the boys are pairing up, as well.  What is going to happen in terms of Travis and his uncles?  I think I would like to read some of Steve's stories.  I guess I will have to ask E Walk to let me talk to Steve, in case he needs an editor.

I am looking forward to more chapters of this story.  Of course, I always look forward to more chapters.
