Author’s Note: It is time to put The Doctor Gets A Visitor to bed. It's been flying through the airways for over a year now. I want to thank all of the readers who have read the story. I especially want to thank Radio Rancher for not only being my founder, but he has edited every one of the 216 chapters of the Doctor that have been pouring out of my pencils. In addition he has helped me become a better writer.
I also want to also thank Tickie for taking an unknown beginning author and hosting me on his site.
Now for the good news. Just because the story is being put to bed doesn’t mean that the characters are going to go to sleep. There will be a series of vignettes of the major characters that appeared in the story. I plan to call the series, The Doctor Chronicles.
Thanks for reading. E
Chapter 41
Again Jiggery Jig
The next morning in Fremont, everyone got ready to go back to their normal activities. The guys had to start school. Jeff was ready to start the new semester. Beau had talked his counselor into allowing him to take some advance placement classes.
Jeff called Mr. Conrad and Alan and asked for some more details on what they had in mind. They wanted us to go on an eight day cruise over the spring break. They would put the group up in top notch accommodations. We had to pay our airfare to and from the ports. Jeff was very non committal and said he would have to run it by the group to see if they wanted to do it. “You know that would be rather expensive, since some of the people were not working right now.”
We had a party at our house on Friday, which we had catered from the club. Jeff used the occasion to see what the young people wanted to do and thank the Peoria people for coming. The young people agreed to go on the cruise after Mrs. T. said she would pay for the charter flights.
Everyone said goodbye to the people from Peoria, since they were leaving the next morning. Tommy was going to drive them to Peoria and would be flying back Sunday night, when Jeff and I would pick him up.
We settled into a routine. We got the Hamilton boys worked into the group. They already knew most of the people from school.
Things were moving along smoothly until the last of January when we got a call from Beau. “Dad, Aunt Evelyn died today. The service is going to be on Saturday at 10:00 in the morning. We are leaving Fremont at 5:00 on Friday. Aunt Rea has already made arrangements for the jet to take us. I have already talked to everyone else who is supposed to be going. Aunt Evelyn wanted Jeff to play and me to sing at the service.”
“After the funeral, we are to meet in Aunt Rea’s office for the reading of the will. I am not sure why, but Aunt Rea is insistent that certain people be there.”
On Friday, we arrived at the airport. We were joined by Beau, Spencer, Jason, Chip, Clay, Becca and Tommy. Of course Mrs. T. and Ben and Josh were going with us.
When we arrived, we went to our hotel and got settled, we had dinner and then Jeff and Beau went to the church to practice the songs that Aunt Evelyn asked that they sing and play.
When they got back, we all went to bed since we had been up all day.
The service was well planned. Aunt Evelyn was wearing the sweater and pin that Beau had given her for Christmas. The guys did their usual outstanding jobs and there were no dry eyes in the packed sanctuary.
After the burial and the lunch, we all met at Rea’s office for the reading of the will. Rea took charge. “It is with pleasure that I am reading Evelyn’s will. She changed it for the last time, after we spent this last Christmas in Fremont.’”
“I have a $50,000.00 check for the following persons: Clay, Chip, Spencer and Rebecca.” Rea added, “Evelyn knew that Tommy and Jason would be taken care of by Ginny and Lyle. The rest of her funds will go to Beau. I estimate that amount will be about five million dollars. I won’t know the exact amount until all costs and taxes have been paid. Evelyn has stipulated that all taxes be prepaid. Beau, I will have the funds transferred to your account as soon as possible and I have already discussed this matter with Randy Carmichael.”
Beau was sitting there crying. Jeff and I went to hold him. He looked at us and whispered, “I never dreamed that Aunt Evelyn had this kind of money. I wasn’t trying to get her money.”
Rea was standing there listening. She looked at Beau and said, “Beau, Evelyn knew that, and I think that is the reason she changed her will. She knew that you would be a good steward for her money. She had grown to love all of you young people. You were the only family she ever had. She chose to give the money to you because of what you did at Christmas.”
On the way home, Beau was very quiet. Everyone recognized that he needed some down time, even Becca. When we got home, Beau went to his room. Josh and Ben went to talk to him. He was just staring off into space. Beau looked at them and said, “Dads, I guess I don’t understand life. Why did Aunt Evelyn burden me with all that money?”
Josh held him close and said, “She loved and respected you. She trusted that you will use the money wisely since you are already wealthy in your own right and work all of the time at the Shoppe and baby sit when you are here. Just remember, she wanted you to use the money wisely.”
Beau hugged Josh and Ben and undressed and went to take his shower. He was turning into a very handsome young man.
Beau almost never missed a day of either working out or running. He was gaining a larger entourage. Jason idolized Beau and spent as much time as he could with him. The two guys would spend hours studying together when they had work to do. The Hamilton boys became part of the fixtures as did Spencer and the two Wanamaker boys and Chip and Clay. The guys spent as much time together and they accepted the fact that Rebecca was almost always around as were some of the other 13, 14, 15, years.
Of course, all of the old friends were at Josh and Ben’s house more than at home. It was like Jason’s, Beau’s friends and the older people considered Ben and Josh’s house the home base.
The third quarter was ending and of our people were making top grades.
We went to board our charter. We had to go to Omaha on two buses again. We climbed onto the plane and everyone was sitting everywhere. Beau and Rebecca got on last after they acted like the flight attendants and checked everyone off. We had to stop in Atlanta to pick up the President’s twins and S.Z.Q. and two Secret Service Agents. Their flight from Washington D. C. had been delayed because of a bomb scare.
When the five new people were aboard, we took off for Fort Lauderdale. People from the ship met us at the airport took us right to the ship terminal. We were the last people to arrive. We got on and got settled in the accommodations. Jeff and I had the same suite as last time. The Conrads had the same suite. We had Jason, Davey, Larry and Lenny with us.
We were to find out later that everyone had super accommodations. Mrs. Tillison and some of the young ladies had accommodations like ours on a different level. Everyone had first class accommodations. Jeff called a meeting and said, “Since there are so many of us, we will probably be scattered throughout the dining room. I want to see everyone in the morning at ten, in the theatre. Oh by the way, if I hear any complaint’s about any rowdy activity, we will send you out of here and you'd better hope the sharks don’t catch you.”
After dinner, we went to the theatre and Alan and the Captain blindsided us. Alan said, “We would like to have our special guests from Nebraska stand. Their leader Mr. Jeff Wilson will be introducing them to you, all week long. We have had the opportunity to work with Jeff before, and you are going to go away from this cruise shaking your heads. Now I would like to introduce the cruise line’s President, Mr. Conrad.”
Mr. Conrad came out and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, I have to tell you a secret. My grandchildren have been fighting over who was coming on this trip ever since they found out that Jeff and his father were going to be here. Our grandsons had a fantastic time with them and the young men who were with them, so we have all of our children and grandchildren with us.” I just hope that all of these young people don’t interfere with you having a good time. If they do, let Alan know.
The group did a show the third night of the cruise. The show was going superbly and after the first half was finished, there was a very short intermission when everyone changed their outfits while Jeff sang the Impossible Dream and of course he received a standing ovation.
Beau was to be the emcee at the start of the second half. Qhwn the curtain went up, Jason came out on stage, “Hey ladies and gentlemen, it’s me Jason.”
“Beau told me that I was going to be the emcee for the first part of this half of the show for him. My brother and his friend have some special numbers they want to perform for you. No one except me and the orchestra know about it. Here are Beau and Miss Rebecca Gleason in a special performance. They have never done this before an audience. Even Jeff, our leader, has never heard or seen the two of them doing this, so you'd better hold on to your wallets.”
Mrs. Tillison looked at me and I shook my head. The orchestra started to play a tango and Becca came slinking in from the left and Beau from the right. They met in the middle. They were dressed like gypsies and were in their bare feet.” The orchestra started to play and Becca started to sing What Ever Lola Wants. Beau and Rebecca were doing an exaggerated tango, while she sang with a cordless microphone. When she finished, she had pulled Beau close and sang and Lola wants you.
Before the audience could applaud, Beau stood and pointed to his head like he had an idea and he started the sing Hernando’s Hideaway accompanied by the orchestra. He too had a cordless microphone. The two tangoed as he sang and when he finished, they both yelled “Ole'.”
The audience immediately stood and applauded as did all of the rest of the gang backstage. Even the orchestra was standing applauding. The two came out and took a bow and pointed to the orchestra and to the audience.
Spencer came out and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, I sure hope you were holding on to all of your valuables. Those two were so slick and even I had no idea what was going on. And I am even in the same cabin with Beau. Now here is our Jazz Ensemble of High School Students with two songs you will recognize.”
The show was finishing when Alan came on and called Jeff and the entire group of young people to come out. Alan said, “These people don’t know this yet, but they will be performing two more times during this cruise and Jeff will be doing two lectures on social injustices.”
“The first talk will be tomorrow at three o’clock. We are to be in port until two. The group will be performing again in two nights.
Jeff had it all organized so that everyone had to check in by 10:00 each day and find out what was planned. They could eat breakfast and lunch wherever, but everyone had to eat dinner in the dining room. By the end of the cruise, almost everyone was eating their lunch in the dining room too. There was a small group that had breakfast in the dining room as well.
Jeff spent most of his free time planning for the two other shows. Alan and the Captain constantly had him playing at other activities as well. He had several of the young people helping when he gave his presentations on social injustices. Jeff requested that the attendees be limited to people over the age of 20 and he never let anyone know who was with him. During the first talk, he started off with Spencer and then followed with Chip and ended the first session with Beau. When Beau was finished with his R rated version of what happened to him and how he got to know Jeff, the audience was traumatized.
When Alan came out to close the program, Beau stood and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, please do not talk about what happened to me outside this room. Most of my friends know that I have had a bad experience. In fact only about four of them know the entire story and we never talk about it. The important thing is that I am fine now and am okay physically. I have a loving family and a slew of friends and we all take care of each other.”
“I’m sure that you are having a hard time believing everything that I have said, but I see Mr. Hamilton sitting over there and he can tell you that I have not been making this up as will as my Grams, Mrs. Tillison. But again, please do not talk about my experiences outside this room.” Beau left as the audiences applauded.
Jeff asked, “Mr. Hamilton, would you like to make any comments?”
Mr. Hamilton stood and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, Beau just told you a G or PG story about what really happened to him. What happened to Spencer and Chip was new to me. I have no idea of who Jeff plans to use for his next talk, but I have been in on the investigations of a number of the others in our group. Since my sons have become enthralled with these people, I made it my business to find as much information about the group as possible.”
“I think that you are being exposed to some very talented people whom we will see doing big things later in their lives. They are all overachievers and it all starts with Jeff and his Father here. I have grown to know that I can fully trust them with my sons, and not be afraid of anything happening to them.”
Jeff stood and bowed and walked off the stage. The audience was very quiet and I took our adults to the Panorama Lounge. Beau was waiting at the entrance and asked if the group he was with could have a snack. Mrs. Tillison said, “You may have anything you want, as long as you don’t spoil your dinners and get into trouble with anyone.”
Jeff sat down at the piano. He had solicited Dina to sing some quiet songs. They had worked out a nice program that demonstrated Dina’s voice. After tea time most of the patrons came to them and said how much they appreciated what the two had done.
I don’t know how Jeff and the others did it but they did two more completely different great shows.
Jeff did the second of his talks. This time he used Denny, Jeremy and Rebecca and Mrs. Gleason. The audience was as quiet as a stone. Jeff had Beau helping since he had been involved in finding all of the people. When the time was up, there were a number of questions. Jeff excused himself since he had Tommy joining him to do the afternoon tea entertainment. Beau stayed and fielded questions until Alan chased the audience out so the staff could get ready for Bingo. As Beau was leaving, he received another standing ovation.
The morning we departed from the ship most of the staff and some of passengers were standing waving to us as we disembarked. We were taken off first, because of the President’s children. We were whisked away to the airport where our charter was waiting. We stopped in Atlanta and the twins and S.Z.Q. deplaned and boarded another plane to take them to Washington.
The End...
