Chapter 38

School Begins

The five year olds were quite intentionally placed in the same classroom after Mrs. Tillison visited Mr. Corl.  They all ended up in Cindy Ellison’s classroom.  The guys just loved her.  She used Chip as a mentor.  He never showed how much he knew to the other students.  Clay was turning out to be just as sharp.  Carole Anne and Dylan worked hard with him as he requested.  Roddy was also a natural and he began to pick up on what the others knew and he had Mrs. Wanamaker working with him.

Jason and his friends all had Mark Bressler.  Mark stopped over after the first day and said, “This class is really going to be a different group.  There is no question that Jason, Davey, Larry and Lenny are going to be my class leaders.  They are so competitive that they are all going to try to come out on top.”

Beau quickly made arrangements with his teachers and made sure they understood that he wanted to be treated like an ordinary student.  Mrs. Tice had forewarned them about Beau and Denny.

Beau learned to play tennis and golf and proved to be very good at both.  He went out for the cross country team and was by far the best athlete on the team.

Beau and Chris made excellent doubles partners in tennis as did Denny and Mickey.  Beau was by the far the best of them and Denny was second best but they didn’t work well together.  This was going to set a pattern for the future because they were both so competitive.

When it came to golf, Beau was by far the best person available and word had gotten around school so that all of the coaches wanted to be friends with him.

Beau continued to work at the Shoppe, but he cut his hours way back.  It seemed that a lot of clients came in when he was working and so he continued to make money.  He became even more popular as a baby sitter.

Beau insisted that everyone get a current passport.  His rational was that you never know when you might get a chance to take a trip abroad.  Everyone was getting settled into a routine when the people from Peoria arrived.  Tommy couldn’t go get them and help them back, so they came on their own with Rea driving.  When they came in on Thursday, they were dispersed to where they were staying.  Uncle Lyle of course was staying with us.  Rea was staying with Mitchell, Larry and Lenny.  Ginny and Aunt Evelyn were staying at Ben and Josh’s house.

The guys did not realize that we were having the birthday bash of the century.  Even the President and his family arrived as did the Gordons with S.Z.Q.  Jeff, Beau and Jason were completely surprised.

After a very successful party over the long Labor Day Weekend, most of the guests disappeared except for the people from Peoria.  They were going to stay for two weeks.

The guys and gals were all doing well in school.  Jeff was only teaching nine hours and was taking two other courses.  Beau was thriving.  One day the football coach approached him.  “Beau, we would really like for you to join us at practice.  Drew and Kenny said that you might be able to win the big game for us.”

“Sir, I am such a wimp.  I hate to be hurt.”  Beau said, as he walked away.

The coach didn’t relent and after Beau won the 10 K run on Thursday, he went to Beau said, “Beau, please dress up for the game tomorrow night.”

Beau said, “Coach, I don’t have any idea about how to play football.  How could I be of any help?”

Beau did dress out and was wearing number 89.  After halftime, the score was tied.  Both teams had a 5-0 record.  It was the fourth quarter with about two minutes to go, when the coach sent Beau in.  Beau went in and told the team what the coach wanted them to do.  He had them over shift to the left.  Kenny was going to do an end around to that side.  Beau was on the opposite side and went down the field and just stopped and put his hands on his hips and the defenders all started to go to Kenny and Drew.

Kenny threw the ball at Beau and he jumped and caught it and ran into the end zone.  His teammates tackled him and were lying on top of him.  Fremont won the game.  Beau went up to the Coach afterward and said, “That was the one and only game of football I will ever play.  You have some terrific talent, so just develop it.  The team is worse than the opposition.  I may never be able to breathe or walk after the way they jumped on me.  I’ll probably be black and blue for weeks.”

The fall quarter had ended. All of our guys had perfect grades going.  As the second quarter was drawing to a close, it was time for the trip to New York City where the people would be singing the day after Thanksgiving.  We were staying at the Waldorf Astoria.  On Wednesday the young people rehearsed.  On Thanksgiving Day, we went to the Macy’s Day Parade and then had Thanksgiving Dinner in a private room.  The next day we were escorted on a sight seeing tour of the city.

We went to visit the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State building.  At three o’clock everyone went back to the hotel to rest before the show.  Everyone went to eat an early dinner before we left for the Carnegie Center.

Beau, Chip and Spencer were the emcees.  After the show, the group was visited by officials from the Julliard School of Music.  They offered Dina a full scholarship and suggested that some of the others apply as well.

On Saturday, Dina, Aunt Cora, Beau and Jeff went to look at the school.  When the President of the school realized who Aunt Cora was, they were treated royally.  After the visit to the school, everyone met up for another busy day.

On Sunday, some of us slipped off to an old church near the hotel. The young people were caught totally off guard when the Father announced that a group of young people from Nebraska would be providing the special music.

Jeff, Tommy, Beau, Jason and Chip went and sang How Great Thou Art.  Immediately after collecting our luggage we went to the airport and boarded our flight back to Fremont.

After the semester ended, the people from Peoria arrived .  Beau and Jason insisted that they get a big live tree.  It was decorated beautifully.  Beau had been busy shopping and wrapped his gifts.  He hid them all in a special closet.  They were all selected to meet each individual’s taste.

The Christmas Program at the church featured all of our young people but especially Beau, Tommy, Dina, Drew and Jeff.

On Christmas morning, everyone went to the early service and then went back to Josh and Ben’s house.  After brunch, Beau handed out the special gifts he had bought everyone.  Aunt Evelyn received a beautiful Cashmere Sweater and special pin with an angel playing a piano.  Mrs. Tillison got a special pair of Walking Shoes with her initials engraved on them.

After everyone else had received their special gift from Beau, he just sat down.  Jason said, “Beau. You didn’t give Doctor Dad and Jeff anything.”

Beau looked around and said, “I guess they must have been bad.  I need to go to the bathroom.  I’ll be right back.”

Beau came back carrying two small packages wrapped in toilet tissue and band aids and handed Jeff and me each one.  We opened the packages, and we received airline tickets and cruise tickets.  The personalized folders also contained our passports and everything that we would need on our cruise.

Jason came up to us and said, “Your transportation is waiting. You need to leave now.  Your luggage has already been packed and is awaiting you in your limousine.”

Beau said, “Don’t worry about anything.  President Campbell knows you are going and the students won’t be coming back until after you get back.  Besides, I can handle emergencies that arise with Dylan and Carole Anne’s help.  D. Dad, the staff knows that you are going, and Lash has promised to keep the clinic afloat.  Besides, everyone says you are working too hard.  Now you need to go, or you will miss your plane.”

Beau added, “It’s a good thing that we already practiced for our Disney World performance.  Jeff, we won’t let you down.  Aunt Evelyn will make sure we do what we are supposed to do.”

Jeff and I went and got into the limousine.  Sure enough, our luggage was already packed.  When we pulled into the drop-off point at Eppley, we were met by a porter and he helped us to the Delta counters.  We tried to tip the limousine driver and he said that he had already been paid.  When we tried to tip the porter, he also shook his head.  We were traveling first class so we were treated royally.  We were processed before the other passengers.  Jeff leaned over and whispered, “I feel guilty.”

We arrived in Fort Lauderdale after a change of flights in Atlanta.  We had a snack on the plane which was really not too bad.  When we landed in Fort Lauderdale, there was a young man waiting holding our name.  He took us and our luggage to an awaiting limousine and we were taken to a luxury hotel and he got us checked in.  As he was leaving he said, “I am Michael Hamilton and I am your personal guide for the next two days.”

Michael continued, “I suggest that you eat in the Tree Top when you get hungry.  I will pick you up at 8:00 in the morning and take you to where ever you want to go.  We have the entire day, since your cruise ship doesn’t leave until Wednesday the 27th.”

Jeff asked, “Could we go to Disney World, so I can talk to the Entertainment Director so I can lay the groundwork for my people who will be coming from Fremont for the New Year’s Eve celebration?”

Michael said.  “We have been told to do everything possible to make your trip enjoyable as best we can.  We will pick you up at eight in the morning and I will make an appointment for you to speak to the Entertainment Director at 11:00 and then you can spend the rest of the day at the parks.  Would you like to spend the night there or would you prefer to come back tomorrow evening.”

I spoke up and said, “Michael, why don’t we come back tomorrow night?  That way we can be rested and you can spend the day with us so you can keep in touch with the bosses.  I am sure that you have been in communication with Beau, and he would be very upset if you weren’t protecting and taking care of us.”

Michael started to laugh.  “Doctor Wilson, I have been in communication with Beau and a Mrs. Tillison and they have threatened to relieve me of some of my body parts if anything bad should happen to you.  The worst person was Aunt Evelyn.  She didn’t mince any words about what she would have done to me.”

Jeff said, “Gees, I can’t believe you are so afraid of what might happen to you if something happened to us.”

Michael said, “At first, I thought it was a joke until we got a call from Senator Gordon and then a call from the White House warning us that if anything happened to you, we would be investigated and probably shut down.”

I looked at Michel and said, “Mike, I recognize now who you are.  You work for Mr. Everett.  You came to Beau’s house in Oakland, the day that we found all of the money.”

Michael said, “Yes sir, and I have been on every investigation that Beau has had us do from the investigation on Danny, Roddy and Jeremy and even the Gleason’s.  I think there have been several others.”

Jeff said, “I notice that you must be married.  Is it difficult for you to be separated from them?”

Mike said, “Not exactly, since we are staying in the same resort as you.  We will be with you on the cruise, since I am in charge of your security detail and Mr. Everett thought that if I had my family with me that no one would suspect that I am a security person.  I have spoken to the Ship’s Security Officer and they are aware that you are to receive the utmost attention.”

Jeff held up his hand and said, “Mr. Hamilton, call your family and tell them to be ready at 7:00 in the morning.  After my meeting, I would enjoy having your family escort us around the parks.  I hope that meets your approval.  How old are you children?”

“My oldest son is 14 and the younger son is 11. They go to school in Fremont.  Are you sure you wouldn’t mind my family going with us tomorrow.  That would make the boys’ day.”

Jeff said, “We insist.”

We ate at the Tree Top Restaurant and had a very leisurely meal.

We went to pay and the waiter said that all expenses were prepaid.  The young waiter asked, “Will you be joining us for breakfast or will you be ordering room service.  We open at 7:00 but you can order room service for earlier in the morning.”

Jeff said, “We’ll have the room service, since we are taking off for Disney World at 7:00.  Thanks for the great service.”  Jeff laid a $20.00 bill on the table.

The young man said, “Sir, I think you dropped something.  The gratuity was already paid.”

Jeff said, “I couldn’t have dropped anything since I had nothing on me.  I guess this means finders keepers.”

We got back to the room, and the light was blinking on the phone.  Jeff picked up and played the message.  “Hey guys, I heard that you arrived and have met Mr. Hamilton.  I am glad that you are going to be taking Jeremy and Jason to Disney World with you tomorrow.  I know who Jeremy is and Jason knows Jason.  We don’t have any classes with them.”

Aunt Evelyn came on the message and said, “We expect a full report on each days activities and I take off points for any grammatical mistakes.  Have a great cruise.”

Jeff and I looked at each other and shrugged our shoulders.  We took a shower and crawled into bed.

The next morning, our breakfast was served immediately after we had gotten dressed for the day.  After we had eaten, we went to the lobby and were joined by the Hamilton family.  Jeremy, who was the older boy said, “I know who you are.  You are from Fremont, and went to the White House on the Fourth of July and then you went to New York City and did the holiday show at the Carnegie Center.  Everyone in Fremont has been talking about you.”

Jeff said, “Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton, I think we may have to leave the two boys behind, since they can’t forget who we are.  You have to call me Jeff and my dad is D. Dad from now on.  Now go get your butts in that big car over there.”

The four Hamiltons joined us in the limousine.  The two guys sat beside me and Jeff.  We arrived at the Park and when we went to the gate we were immediately ushered to the Central office area.  The receptionist practically fell over Jeff and the others as she served us juice and a sweet roll.

Jeff and I were escorted to the Entertainment Director’s Office and Jeff arranged for the people who would be arriving from Fremont.  He had a tentative program and told the gentleman to get in touch with Beau to see what changes were being made.  As we were getting ready to leave, Jeff said, “Sir, I am sorry that I won’t be here, but the young people are all well prepared.  They won’t let you down.  They are a fabulous group of young people with their heads screwed on straight.  I trust that you will make their visit a great visit.”

After the meeting we went to the park and stayed until the about 7:00.  Everyone was getting tired.  Jeff and the two guys went on as many rides as they could.   We had eaten at some of the specialty restaurants.  When we got back to the hotel everyone just collapsed after the two boys hugged us, as did Mike and his wife.

The next morning we ate breakfast in the breakfast bar and then we got ready to leave for the ship.  Our luggage had been picked up during the night to be delivered to the cruise liner.  We checked out and we each had a small carry on bag.  We went to the terminal building and because of Jeff’s and my stateroom assignment; we were ushered on board immediately.  The Hamiltons were taken on with us, since we all arrived together.

We had one of the Master Suites with two bedrooms which seemed like a complete waste.  The Hamiltons were in the adjacent cabin which was a penthouse suite.  We quickly decided that the young guys would live in our cabin and the parents could have some privacy.

We had been met by all of the ship’s dignitaries and ushered to our suites.  Our cabin had champagne waiting for us and we went to get the Hamiltons and had drinks on the patio.  The three young guys, Jeff, Jeremy and Jason were watching the people get on the ship.  The valet had unpacked our things as they had also done the Hamilton’s luggage.

The two boys settled into the other bedroom in our suite and had a great time playing video games.

We were settled on the balcony when there was a ringing of the door chimes.  Jeremy answered and brought in the cruise director.  He started out by saying “Jeff, we were informed that you are a very talented musician and that you would be willing to perform for us.”

“The guest entertainer for tonight has been delayed by a snow storm in the Midwest.  Would you please entertain our guests tonight?  There is only one show at 9:00 since most of the guests will have had a long day.”

“The Captain has asked that you and your father join him at his table for dinner at 7:00.  The Hamiltons will be at the adjacent table.”

Alan, the cruise director said, “Just plan on wearing a plain coat and tie to perform tonight.”

“But I didn’t agree to perform.” Jeff said.

“Oh, but some people called General Beau and Grams said that you would do it so you will have to talk to them.  We even have your guitar and banjo over there in your closet.  Now if you need anything just give me or Becky a call.”

“I have ordered hors d’oeuvres for six o’clock and since you only drink healthy things, I have some lemonade and fresh orange juice coming.  Doctor Wilson, I understand that you are a Scotch drinker.  There are two bottles Chivas Regal in the cabinet.  You are welcome to use anything in the refrigerator.  If you need anything, just let your valet or cabinet steward know.”

Jeff said, “I am so going to get revenge on Beau and Grams when I get home.  Alan, is there anyway I can check out where I will be doing this show tonight?  Is there a back up orchestra?”

Alan picked up the phone and said, “Auturo, the entertainment for tonight would like to see the set up and make arrangements for tonight.  Give him whatever support you can.  He plays the piano and sings.  He also plays the guitar as well as some other instruments.  Make sure that he has everything he needs.  He has performed in Washington, D. C. and New York City.”

Jeff threw up his hands and asked, “Did they tell you I go to the bathroom ten times a day and that I am Lactose Intolerant?”

Alan laughed and said, “No, but they did tell me that you only go to the bathroom three times a day and drank only milk or fresh juices and maybe a little bubbly or part of a beer. I’ll see you at dinner.  Arturo will meet you in the Show Lounge when you are ready.”

Alan left and Jeff turned to me and said, “Dad, I am so going to make Beau and Mrs. T. pay.”

We went to the theatre where the show was being held.  Jeff talked to Arturo the stage manager and the orchestra.  They made a tentative plan for the show.  Jeff and I left and went back to our balcony and were joined by Jeremy and Jason.

We watched as the last people were boarding. We went and got dressed.  Beau was dressed in his dark suit.  The rest of us had our blazers and ties on.  We went out on the balcony and watched as we pulled away from the dock.

To be continued...

Feedback always welcome:

Editor's Notes:

It looks like Beau has even taken charge of Jack and Jeff's Honeymoon.  All in a day's work, I guess. I wonder what Jeff has in mind to get even with Beau.
