Chapter 28
I’ll Sign
Wednesday morning Beau was waiting and only Boris and David showed up. He hugged them both and thanked them again for everything and told that the Lighteners were going to buy the house.
They ran around the lake and when they got back to the house Beau invited them in and served them coffee and juice while he delivered his Dad’s coffee and terrorized Jason. He came down and took Mrs. Gleason her juice and coffee.
He kept talking to David and Boris as he fixed breakfast. Everyone was assembled and Beau had set the table for seven. Everyone had a ham and cheese omelet with toast and fruit. Boris said, “No one eats breakfast like this.”
Jason said, “Sir, this is a light breakfast for us.” The food disappeared and David and Boris were still there after the guys did the cleanup. Beau finally asked, “Okay Uncles, you have something on your minds so spill it.”
David said, “Beau, we were thinking about taking the three oldest nephews to Kansas City for the weekend. What do you think they and their parents would say?”
“Hey Uncs, that’s a no brainer. The guys would be thrilled, but why aren’t you taking John also. He would probably benefit more than the other three guys. I can’t imagine their parents saying no anymore.”
Jason took over and said, “You need to stay at the Westin Hotel. They have a shuttle service to and from the amusement parks and the baseball stadium. I’ll call La La and Rich Rich and tell them you are coming and maybe they can get you some free tickets.”
The two guys left for the Leavitt’s house stunned. Mrs. Gleason said, “Beau, I see you have already started training your brother.”
“Grandma Renee, he’s training me. He has more money than I will ever have.
Jason dove on Beau and said, “You dummy, I don’t have any money at all. You made me put it in the bank. Grandma Renee, Beau exaggerates.”
“Come on guys, it’s time to go to work.” Josh said. “I’ll take Beau and Ben you take your Grandson. Mrs. Gleason, will you be okay?”
“Yes, Mrs. Davis and I are going to be looking for an apartment or a condominium for me and then we’re having lunch with Mrs. Wanamaker and Mrs. Baxter. I’ll be fine. I’ll just come back here and rest before everyone comes tonight.” Mrs. Gleason said with a twinkle in her eye.
Everyone took off and Beau worked his bottom off at the Antique Shoppe. He made piles for the thrift shop and then for Goodwill. He opened another box and started to shake. He went and got the Weavers who were the only adults in the Shoppe.
Beau showed them a piece of artwork to them and said, “I’m betting this piece is worth a small fortune. Please take it to the office so that it isn’t sold inadvertently. I’ll research it on the internet and see what I can find, but I think maybe you should reconsider paying Mrs. Gleason more than we did originally. I think I need to go home. My mind can’t take too much more this week.”
The Coopers came just then and said, “Beau, we’ve lined up two more estates for you to go see tomorrow – one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. They're located relatively close to each other.”
“Okay, I’ll get my Dad to drop me off here in the morning. I just hope we don’t find another situation like Mrs. Gleason’s. I don’t think I could handle that emotionally right now. Can someone please take me home so I can get ready for tonight? Thank you all for supporting me yesterday. I think I have already sold the house and I’ll know tonight for sure.”
Mr. Weaver said, “Let’s go Tonto. Let’s mount up.”
Beau started to laugh, “You have to have been talking to Chipper. Otherwise, how would I know what you were talking about?”
Beau walked into the house and confirmed that Norm and Nancy would be there at 7:00. He lined up the lifeguards for the pool. He fixed a chicken casserole and salad for dinner and was making final notes for the meeting with Mrs. Gleason’s offspring. He called to make sure that Judge Leavitt could be there as well as Dan Crawford in uniform. He called me and told me to have Jeff there for moral support.
He then called the three offspring and reminded them it was in there best interest to be at his house, if they ever wanted to see Mrs. Gleason again.
He made copies of all of the transactions and statements concerning the three different families and put them in three folders along with the applicable part of Mr. Everett’s report.
When that was done, he made three copies of each folder. When Ben, Josh and Jason got home, it was very obvious that Beau was very agitated. He served the meal but only made polite conversation. The guys did the cleanup and went to get dressed for the pool. They opened the pool and people started to arrive.
When the Lighteners arrived, Beau took the four guys to the pool area and introduced them. They were good swimmers so they fit right in. Beau went back to the adults and Mr. Lightener said, “Beau, here is a cashier’s check for the amount agreed. We had it made out to you.”
Beau put the check in his pocket and said, “Aunt Nancy here’s your fee for handling the sale. While you are getting the paperwork ready, I’ll be outside. Dads get everyone whatever they want to drink while we wait for the next meeting.”
“There should be some people arriving shortly. Grandma Renee, please don’t say anything to any of your children unless I am there.” Beau said as he dove into the pool.
He was surrounded by people. He even managed to laugh. John swam up to Beau and hugged him. “Thank you for telling Uncle David and Uncle Boris to take me to Kansas City too. I love you.”
“I love you too John.” Beau said as he hugged the little guy.
“Matt, did your parents give you any flack about going to Kansas City with your Uncles?” Beau asked.
“Nope, they are even giving us the money so we can pay our own way. I think they are just glad to have some time alone.”
Everyone Beau had invited was present and in place when three large vehicles pulled up. Beau continued to swim, and deliberately waited for someone to call him. He came in and said, “I’m Beau, thanks for coming. Let me go get out of these wet clothes. Dad, get everyone whatever they want to drink and I’ll be back to make the introductions.”
Beau returned dressed in dress slacks and a long sleeve dress shirt with loafers and his hair was immaculate. He had some folders in his arms. “I’ll introduce the new guests from the photographs I have. This is Mr. Archibald Gleason, Mrs. Gleason’s oldest son. The lady sitting next to him his wife Crystal and I’m guessing the young man with them is their son Leroy. This is Mrs. Rosalie Gleason Rodman and her husband Daryl. He looked at the last couple and said, “This is Rudolf Gleason and his wife Louella.
He looked at the young lady who was with the Rodmans, “I’m sorry, I don’t have any record of you so who are you?”
“I’m Becky Rodman. My parents treat me like I’m five. I’m 13 and I really don’t have any love for my parents nor do they for me. They keep telling me I was a mistake. I have a feeling this might be an interesting meeting. My mother took me with her to the bank today; she totally lost her cool when Mr. Wagner told her that Grandma had closed all of her accounts. My mother has been on the phone yelling all afternoon.”
“Becky, thank you. You just presented my opening argument. Now, I would like to introduce the rest of the participants.”
He introduced the rest of us and started, “For those of you who have no idea what is going on, these three families have been living well beyond their means on money embezzled from their Mother’s accounts.”
“They all have bought homes in the $250,000.00 to $300,000.00 price range. They were all paid for by funds from Mrs. Gleason’s accounts.”
Beau stood and pointed, “The Archibald Gleason’s have a brand new Lincoln Continental and a luxury Lexus, which they purchased with Mrs. Gleason’s money. Their poor son little Leroy has a new Corvette and he goes to an exclusive private school all courtesy of Mrs. Gleason’s money.”
Beau moved to the Rodman’s and said, “The Rodman’s have a new Cadillac sedan and spanking new Volvo sedan thanks to Mrs. Gleason’s money.
“Heck Mr. Rudolf Gleason only has a new Hummer and his wife has a new Mercedes Benz.”
Beau stopped and said, “Judge Leavitt and Uncle Norm, here are all of the records of what these creeps have done. You will notice that there is no indication of Mrs. Gleason’s approval or knowledge. Mrs. Gleason, did you ever give the power of attorney to any of your children to act on your behalf?”
“No. My husband told me not to do that, before he died. He said they would misuse the power.” Mrs. Gleason answered.
Beau handed the three couples each a folder with all the information that he and Mr. Everett had obtained on them. He handed Judge Leavitt and Norm copies of them.
“Grandma Renee, I guess you now own three huge houses, and at least seven new cars.”
“Uncle Norm, I would like for you to start preparing the cases against these three couples on the charge of grand theft larceny or whatever. Also start the effort to reclaim as much of Mrs. Gleason’s money as possible. We don’t care if you have to sell all of the vehicles or houses along with the contents.”
“Uncle Dan, you may be serving some eviction notices very soon. Judge Leavitt, I trust you will take time to hear the cases.”
“You can be sure of it. You have done a very thorough job gathering the evidence together. It should be a cut and dry case if Mrs. Gleason signs the required papers.” Judge Leavitt answered.
Mrs. Gleason said, “I’ll sign. When and where do you want me to sign? I also want to make a public announcement that I will not be responsible for any debts these people have or incur in the future. The only one of them who has ever had any time for me was Becca.”
Leroy said, “You can’t do this to me. I won’t be able to go back to school. I’ll have to go to public schools.”
“Well Dumbo, join the rest of the crowd. Hey, you might even learn something. I can also tell you that you won’t be receiving anymore $1,000.00 checks for your birthday or Christmas that were signed by your Daddy.”
“Meeting’s over. You have until Monday night at 7:00 to make full restitution or Uncle Norm will start legal court proceedings on Tuesday morning.” Beau said, as he got up.
The oldest son said, “Mother, you can’t do this to us.”
Mrs. Gleason said, “We just did. I guess I’ll be seeing you Monday night and don’t any of you call and ask me for any financial help. Them days are over. Come on Beau; let’s go check on the guys.”
Beau and Mrs. Gleason left and everyone knew the meeting was over. Three rather deflated families left. The rest of the assembled people went to find Beau.
He and Mrs. Gleason were talking to David and Boris and the older Mr. Leavitt. Beau was holding Jason. The pool had been covered.
Beau looked up and said, “Don’t tell me I can’t do what I just did. The only one of that group I have any regard for is Rebecca. I’m afraid that her parents are going to take out their anger on her. It’s obvious that her parents are only concerned about themselves and not her. Someone needs to do something to make sure she isn’t victimized. Everyone be here on Monday. If those creeps do what I think they will, it should be very interesting. Judge Leavitt, warn your associates that they will probably try to come up with a scheme to have Mrs. Gleason declared incompetent.”
“Dad and Pop, I want you both to do a complete psychological make up on Grandma Renee. Doctor Dad, tell Icky she needs a complete physical and the she will be there at 9:00 in the morning.”
Come on Jason, let’s go and get ready for bed. I need some down time so you need to read to me tonight.”
The two guys left and everyone knew they had been dismissed. Jeff went and checked on the two guys. They were lying on Jason’s bed in their briefs.
Beau was holding Jason as Jason was reading Huckleberry Finn. Jeff didn’t say anything but reported that the guys were both fine.
To be continued...
Editor's Notes:
I am still overwhelmed at Beau. He is just plain fantastic.
