Chapter 15

Too Many Choices

In Kansas City, the Bixbys joined Josh and Ben and the guys in their suite for a fancy breakfast.  While they were eating, they decided to go to an early church service so they could be at Worlds of Fun right after it opened at 10:00.

They went to an Episcopal church that they could walk to.  Josh told the guys to go ahead and get seated, that he would join them in a minute.  He made like he was going to the bathroom but after the guys got seated he went to talk to the Father.

The Father called the organist over and told her what to expect.  The young woman said, “I’ll follow their lead as best as I can.”

Josh went in and sat down next to Ben and Mr. Bixby in the third row.  The five young guys were in the second row with Jason furthest from the center aisle.  The service was about to start when someone said, “May we sit here, sir?”

Jason looked up and said, “Oh no!  You two have to be following us since we didn’t even know we were coming here until 30 minutes ago.”  He motioned for La and Rich to sit down.  The service went as any service until the collection plate was passed.  The Fremont guys except for Jason put in $5.00.  Royce only had a dollar so he was a little embarrassed as he passed the plate to Jason.  Jason had folded up his money so no one could see what he put in and handed the plate to La.”

La La leaned over to Jason and whispered, “You just put $20.00 in the plate.”

Jason leaned over and whispered, “I know, but don’t say anything, especially to Royce.  My Grandmother gave me $100.00 before she left, to go back to Peoria and besides, my brother always puts $50.00 in the collection plate for the homeless and needy.”

The service continued and when it was time for the recessional the Father came forward, “We are fortunate to be joined today, by four very talented young men from Fremont, Nebraska.  Jason Jameson will be singing the 23rd Psalm and he will be joined Davey Montgomery and Larry and Lenny Edmonds for The Lord’s Prayer.”

The guys did a great job and the Father motioned for them to join him the recessional.  Jason declined and the guys stood as the Father recessed.  When the organist was putting the music away and locking the organ, Jason went to her and hugged her and gave her a kiss.  “Ma’am, thanks for making us look good.”

The lady looked at Jason and said, “Mr. Jameson, I did nothing.  You guys were wonderful.”

They went back to the pew and Royce said, “We need some singers like you guys in Wichita.”

Davey said, “What you really need are Jason’s three brothers and Drew and Dina.  They would blow the roof off of your church.”

The group was walking out when the Father came and thanked them for coming.   Jason looked at him and said, “Father, the next time we come to Kansas City we’ll be going to one of them churches that don’t tolerate any singing.”  He hugged and kissed the Father as they left.

The guys were getting ready to go to the hotel and were saying goodbye to La La and Rich Rich.  La La said, “Jason, you’re not going to believe this, but I grew up in Peoria and that’s where my family is.  I would like to visit more but we have to get to the ball park since we have a game at 12:00 today.  Perhaps we can visit on the phone sometime.”

Jason said, “Granddad, give Mr. Lawton one of your cards with our home phone on it.”

The guys went to the hotel and changed and checked out.  The Bixbys followed the Fremont crowd in their own car.  They arrived at World’s of Fun just after the initial wave of people was through the gates.  They walked up right to the ticket window and used the $10.00 coupons Jason had found at the hotel.

The guys made the most of their eight hours at the park.  They said goodbye to the Bixbys and started back to Fremont.  There were six very tired people and not one of them had any trouble going to sleep.

At the Dude Ranch, Beau woke up, he found that he had a little body up next to him as did Jeremy and Spencer.  Beau woke the two older guys up and asked it they wanted to go running.  The two guys climbed out of their bunks and put on their shorts.  Beau woke Chip and said, “Spencer, Jeremy and I are going running.  You are in charge of the bunk house while we're gone, and don’t let anyone in.”  Beau had taken Ranger outside and had him do his business behind the bunkhouse and he put him in the guard position.

Rick arrived at 6:15 and the four guys took off.  They saw a few other joggers and just waved.  When they got back to the bunkhouse, the five year olds were still asleep.  The three older guys showered before waking the three younger guys.  The three older guys made the bunks as the three younger guys were getting dressed and no one could tell that the bunks had been slept in.  Beau made sure the dirty towels were in a pile and the bathroom was absolutely clean.

They walked to the Chow Hall and were joined by Carole Anne and Dylan.  Mr. Stephens and Rick joined them.  They were eating when Beau said, “There are too many choices of food on the line.  There is going to be a lot that will need to be thrown away.  Besides, cowboys didn’t have choices. They ate what was served and were thankful for it.  I think we should talk to the Cook tomorrow, after I have time to develop a plan.”

“Now, Mr. Stephens, is there a church close by where we could go this morning?” Beau asked.

“Yes, there is one out at the entrance and turn left and go about a mile.  It is a small church and has services at 8:30 and 11:00 during the summer.”  Mr. Stephens said.

Beau stood and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, we’re going to a small church about two miles away, if anyone would like to join us.  We’ll be going to the 8:30 service.  We’ll be leaving from in front of the office at 8:00.  Now have a good day.”

Beau turned to Mr. Stephens and asked, “Do you have anything to announce?”

Mr. Stephens shook his head no, and Beau said, “You have all received a copy of the day’s activities.  I hope that some of you will consider joining Miss Gordon, Mr. Morrison and Mr. Stephens at the 8:30 church service.  Oh, by the way, dress is very informal.  We’ll be wearing what we have on.  Come guys, we made this mess.  We need to clean it up.”  The entire table got up and carried their utensils to the containers and Beau wiped the table.

Everyone else did the same and the help didn’t know what to think or do.

The guys went to the bathroom and met everyone at the front of the main bunkhouse.  They loaded into two vehicles and were joined by four other families and drove to the church.  Beau looked around and said, “This is a place out of the 18th century.  It needs a lot of love and care.”

The young man who was serving as a pastor was a seminary student and was only there for the summer went to the pulpit and asked, “Is there anyone here who can play the piano?”

Mr. Stephens pointed to Rick who went forward.  He sat down at the piano the young pastor said, “I don’t suppose there is anyone who would be willing to lead us in a couple of songs?”

Beau got up and said, “Sir, I can sing a little, but I need all the help I can get.  May I pick the songs?”

The young man said, “Be my guest.  This is the most people I have seen in this church in the four weeks I have been coming here.”

Beau said, “Okay, everyone stand and sing hymn number 295.”

Rick started to play and Beau held up his hands.  “Mr. Stephens, go get Rick’s guitar.  This piano sounds like it hasn’t been tuned since it arrived in the early 1800’s.  Okay everyone, let’s lift the rafters.”  He led the few people in That Old Time Religion.  He finished and sat down next to Rick.

Mr. Stephens returned and handed Rick the guitar and at the appropriate time Beau said, “People we need to make sure the people in the next county hear us.  Now please stand and join us in singing the hymn 21.”  The people stood and the assembled people sang The Old Rugged Cross.

The two guys sat down at the piano and the Pastor gave his sermon.  When he finished, he said, “We don’t usually call for an offering but since we have so many people here, would my two young friends gather the offering?”

Beau motioned for Jeremy and Spencer to help as they collected the offering.  Spencer was at the end of the pew where Dylan was sitting and handed a note to Spencer.  Spencer looked at Dylan and Carole Anne and winked.

They took the offering plates to the front and the guys handed the plates to Spencer who gave a simple but elegant prayer of thanks.  Spencer handed the plates and the note to the Pastor.

The young pastor said the prayers for the day and announced, “Please stand as Mr. Beau Benson and Rick Stephens lead us in our closing hymn which will be followed by Mr. Benson singing the 23rd Psalm and The Lord’s Prayer.  Thank you all for coming.”

Beau led the last hymn, He Leadeth Me and then launched into the 23rd Psalm and The Lord’s Prayer.  The young Pastor exited and shook hands with everyone saying, “I’ll make sure those two young men are back here at 11:00 even if I have to kidnap them.”

The young man went to Beau and Rick and said, “This is the most exciting thing that has happened in my short time in the Ministry.  Please be here at 11:00.  It is experiences like this that make it seem so worthwhile.”

Beau glared and said, “I’m on vacation.  Why is everyone making me work so hard?”

They went back to the ranch and Chip said, “Please don’t ask to go to another service today.  Can we please stay and have some fun?”

Mr. Stephens said, “I’ll make sure that nothing happens to the three young men.  I need to be here to make sure everything is ready for today’s arrivals.”

Dylan and Carole Anne took Beau, Rick, Jeremy and Spencer back to the church.  The word had gotten around camp and the community and the church was almost full.  The guys helped the people get seated and went and sat in the old choir area.

The second service was basically a repeat of the first service except that Beau included Jeremy and Spencer in the singing of The Lord’s Prayer.  As they were leaving, the young Pastor said, “I don’t suppose that you will be here next Sunday?”

Beau hugged the young man, Bruce Holladay and said, “Sir, I have no idea what is happening tomorrow.  I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be at a dude ranch and here I am.”

Beau looked at the young man and asked, “Where will you be if we need you?”

Mr. Holladay said, “I am taking courses in Fort Collins this summer so I can be ordained next summer.  Here, I’ll give you my telephone numbers if something comes up.”

Beau hugged the young man again, and they went back to the ranch in time for soup, salads, sandwiches and dessert.  After lunch, Beau’s young men announced, “Beau, we want to go riding.”

Beau took the guys to the riding area and the three little guys got a pony and Spencer and Jeremy had horses.  Beau made sure the five guys were settled and they left with their escort on a trail.

Beau introduced himself to the gentleman in charge, “Hi Sir, I’m Beau.  Thanks for taking care of my guys.”

The man looked at Beau and said, “Young man, people don’t usually thank me.  They are usually too busy complaining.  Wouldn’t you like to ride also?  Oh, by the way, my name is Kit and I’m the stable manager.

Beau said, “Sir, I’d love to ride; but may I ride that big black horse over there?  He is so beautiful and just seems to be calling to me saying, “Please ride me.”

Kit said, “Beau, Midnight has never been ridden.  In fact if anyone gets too close to him he runs away.”

Beau walked over and climbed on the fence and started talking to the horse.  The horse came over and let Beau pet him.  Before Kit knew what had happened, Beau was on Midnight’s back riding around the corral.  They came back to the stable area and Beau jumped off.  He took two cubes out of his pocket and Midnight followed Beau to the stable area where he groomed Midnight.   Beau came out and climbed the fence.

He went to Kit and said, “I thought you said Midnight was mean.  He’s not mean at all.  He just has a mind of his own.  He doesn’t want a bit in his mouth and he really would rather not have to wear a saddle.  He will never hurt anyone deliberately but he also will never trust too many people.”

Mr. Stephens was standing there and asked, “Mr. Benson, are you trying to take my job or what?”

“Sir, I wouldn’t want your job for all of the silver dollars in the world, but I’ll bet that before we leave next weekend, you’ll be glad we came.  Now we need to talk.”  Beau said.

Beau and Mr. Stephens walked away and Beau asked, “Has Rick been misused sexually.  I think he has.  He seems to have an aversion to any physical contact.  He has said nothing, but I just feel that he has had an unpleasant experience.”

“Beau, Rick didn’t want to come here.  I guess it’s my fault.  I made a policy that he couldn’t be involved with any guests and I think he feels isolated.”

“Well Mr. Stephens, we’re going to fix that problem right now.  As of now, Rick is an assistant activities director for the camp.  He relates very well with the younger people.  I have other plans for him, and I’ll let you know what they are when I figure it out.  Now I need to go tell Carole that she has a new employee.  Bye sir.”

Beau talked to Carole Anne and Dylan and told them what he did.  Beau went back to the bunkhouse.  The guys were all out and he crawled into the shower.  When he came out drying his hair, the bunkhouse attendant was standing there.

Beau looked at him and asked, “What are you doing here?  Our bunkhouse is fine.”

The guy took off his jeans and said, “But I’m not.  You have been running around with that fairy Rick.  Let’s see if you can take my manhood.  He couldn’t take it.  He began to cry when I tried to penetrate him.”

Beau looked at him and said, “I guess you must have been in a big hurry so he wasn’t properly prepared.”  Beau walked over to the phone and said, “I would like to see Mr. Stephens and his son in my cabin now.”

The young man, whose name happened to be Will, started to go for his jeans but Beau grabbed them and threw them out the door. Beau stood against the door and Will started toward him and Beau kicked him where it would hurt most and Will grabbed his crotch area.

There was a knock on the door and Beau opened it and Mr. Stephens was standing there holding Will’s jeans.  “How did these pants get outside and why are the two of you standing around in the nude?”  Mr. Stephens asked.

“I threw them out there so numb nuts over there couldn’t escape.  Now if you make sure that he doesn’t go anywhere, I’ll go get dressed.”

Beau put on his clothes and said, “Mr. Stephens, I think we should call the sheriff and report Will for trying to rape me and Rick.”

Will started to shake, “Please don’t call my father.  He’ll kill me.

Beau looked and Mr. Stephens and asked, “Is Will’s father the Sheriff or what?’

“Yes, Will’s father is Sheriff Champion.”  Mr. Stephens answered.

Beau said, “This gets more and more interesting.  So Will, how old are you and what is your status in school?”

“I’m 17 and I will be a senior at the local high school and I’m going to be the senior class president.”  Will whispered.

“So I guess you know most of the other young people who work here.  So you have two choices.  Either you call your Father or I’ll tell everyone who works here what you did today.  Since Rick will be here for the summer. I’d rather keep what happened to him under wraps if we can.  So which will it be?”  Beau asked.

By now Will was rather rattled and looking a little peaked.  “I’ll call my Dad and ask him to come here.”

Beau said, “Good choice.  Now use this phone and call your parents and see how fast they can be here.”

Will made a call, “Dad, it’s important that you and Mother come to the ranch on personal business as soon as you can. … Okay Dad. I will see you at 4:30 in Mr. Stephen’s office.”

Beau said, “Mr. Stephens, everything is under control, so don’t worry about the problem right now.  We can wait until 4:30 to find out the rest of the story.  Come on Rick, we’re going swimming and Will, you better keep your clothes on or you’ll be working for Kit cleaning out the stalls.”

Mr. Stephens and Will left and Beau handed Rick a swim suit and they changed and went to the pool.  Carole and Dylan were there, and Carole said, “Beau, I understand that you did something that no one has ever done?”

Beau asked, “What did I do now?”

“Kit told us you rode Midnight.”  Carole Anne said.

“Oh that.”  Beau said as he dove into the pool.

Editor's Notes:

Didn't I tell you in the last chapter that something was going to happen in this chapter? I thought I did.  Beau is really something. Isn't he?
