Chapter 12

Meddling in Family Business

Friday morning, Beau was sitting outside and Father Wanamaker and Jeremy and pulled in.  It was just the three of them.  When they got back to the house David and Boris were loading their van.  The two Leavitt boys were there with their father who didn’t look very happy.

The boys’ father walked over to Beau and said, “Mr. Benson, why don’t you stop meddling in my family’s affairs?”

“Well sir, if you and your wife were being proper parents, then I probably wouldn’t be involved.  It’s too bad that you and your wife haven’t come into the 21st century like your parents.”

“Uncle David and Uncle Boris will never let anything bad happen to your sons on the trip.  In fact your sons will come back very mature young men.”  Beau said.

He yelled, “Mark and Luke you realize I want a 2000 word report from each of you when you get back.  If you collaborate the report needs to be 5000 words.  Now you four have a great time and don’t drown.”

Luke said, “Stuff it Benson.  You just make sure that one of the ponies at the dude ranch doesn’t kick you where it would hurt the most.”

Dale went to Beau and whispered in his ear.  Beau looked at Mr. Leavitt and walked away.  He went to the van and hugged the four guys just before they took off.

Beau went into the house and Ben and Josh had fixed breakfast and everyone was sitting waiting for Beau when he walked in.

After breakfast Tommy, Uncle Lyle and Rea pulled up in the van and the guys loaded Ginny’s and Aunt Evelyn’s luggage.  Both boys had tears in their eyes as they said goodbye.

After the van was out of sight, the guys went and did the clean up and Beau quickly showered and came down and said, “Dads, I want the doors locked as soon as we are all home tonight.  I need to pack sometime.”

Dylan and Carole Anne came in and Jason piped up, “Heck, why pack?  I read on the internet that you were going to a nude dude ranch.  Wait until I tell the guys.  Come on Granddad, you better take me to work before Beau attacks.  See you all later.”

Corky arrived and Dylan and Carole Anne left with the guys.  They picked up Matthew and Berto and had just arrived at the Dover house when the trucks arrived from the Shoppe.  Beau directed what room the pieces were to go to.  At 9:20, Beau announced, “I have to leave.  You guys have my plans and you know what you are doing.  We’ll be back as soon as we can and we’ll provide lunch.

Beau, Dylan and Carole Anne went back to Josh and Ben’s house and just as Beau opened the garage door, Mr. Carstairs and his truck pulled in.  Beau said, “Mr. Carstairs, the artwork in this garage came from three different houses.  I really haven’t had time to go through most of it, but I will be pulling some pieces as we go.”

Beau pulled four pieces from the assorted collections as the guys were putting them on the truck.  M. Carstairs challenged, “You pulled some of the best pieces.  The value of the merchandise just decreased by half.”

“Mr. Carstairs, I have a house to decorate, and you will appreciate what I have done later.  Now, would you just chill.  I know what I am doing.”  Beau assured him.  Carole Anne and Dylan were enjoying watching the interplay between the two males.

Beau closed the garage door and he rode with Mr. Carstairs to my house.  “Mr. Carstairs, these things were in the attic that I didn’t know existed in my old house.  I just figured there might be something worth a couple of bucks.  I pulled them aside from the things that went to the Antique Shoppe.”

Carole Anne asked, “Beau, may I buy that statue of a man on a horse?  It would be perfect for a birthday present for my sister.”

Beau picked it up and handed it to Carole Anne and said, “Okay lady, you owe me a wooden nickel.”

Mr. Carstairs looked at the statue and examined it and said, “Beau, you just gave away $25,000.00.”

Beau said, “So, Carole Anne has invited seven of us stay at her nude dude ranch for a week at no charge.  This is the least I can do.”

They went to Les’ house next and Beau told Mr. Carstairs that again there were two separate shipments.  Beau again pulled some pieces and put them in Carole Anne’s van.  Carole Anne saw something that caught her attention and asked, “Beau, could I buy this painting for my parents?  It looks like the scene out of our house that we saw every morning when we ate breakfast.”

Beau looked at the painting and said, “Sold for a silver dollar minted in 1878.”

Mr. Carstairs looked at the painting and said, “Young lady, you must be from the Estes Park area of Colorado because that is where this artist did his work.”

Carole Anne said, “Sir, you pegged that right.”

They moved to Mrs. T’s, and Beau pulled a couple more pieces from Mrs. Olson’s things.  When they got to the Dover residence, Mr. Carstairs’ eyes went wide.  “Beau, you are not going to pull anything from this garage are you?”

“Not unless Carole Anne or Dylan sees something they want.  The things I pulled are to replace these things.  Now if you don’t want to do this auction, just say so, and I’ll call the Creep.”

“Beau, don’t be ridiculous.  You have just thrown a lot more at me than you had me prepared for.”  Mr. Carstairs turned to his guys after he had locked the truck and said, “Guys, you head on home.  I’ll unlock the truck when I get to the gallery.”

His crew left and Mr. Carstairs said, “Beau, I’ll spring for lunch for all of your friends.”

Beau whistled and all of the guys appeared with Mr. Cooper.  “Mr. Carstairs has offered to take us to lunch.  Where do you want to go?”

Berto said, “Can we just go to the Madisons’?”

“Okay people, load up.  We have three vehicles.  Let’s move.”  Beau said, as he locked the house.

When they arrived at the Madisons’ it was almost empty because it was a little late.  The guys put some tables together and when it was time for dessert, Beau said, “Mrs. Madison, bring whatever you haven’t been able to peddle today.  These yoyos will eat anything you bring.”

She brought two trays of desserts and they disappeared.  When she brought the check, Mr. Carstairs paid the bill and left the tip.  “Beau, I think I will try to set the auction for the Wednesday after next.  That way, I’ll have a chance to advertise all the merchandise.  I’ll be busy all weekend just trying to figure out what it is that you pawned off on me this time.  Now I really need to get back to Omaha so we can unload the truck.”

Beau got up and hugged Mr. Carstairs and said, “Mr. Carstairs, thanks for lunch.  We’ll discuss the monetary arrangements after the auction.  We need to get back to work now,”

Beau stopped to talk to the Madisons and thanked them while the guys put the tables back to their original positions.  They went back to the Dover house.  Mr. Cooper took Denny and Danny to help at the store.

Beau had everyone else finishing up when Anita arrived.  She was amazed at what she found.  She helped Beau with the window treatment and accessories.  When they finished, Anita, Carole, Dylan and Beau walked through the house.

Beau asked, “Did, I miss anything?”

Anita said, “Beau, I don’t know Mrs. Dover, but I bet she’ll just love what you have done.  It is so warm and inviting.  I can’t imagine anyone not being comfortable here.  Now here is the bill for the things I purchased.  You can pay me whenever Mrs. Dover pays you.”

Anita left and Beau said, “I need to go talk to the guys.  I need to go get some cash to pay everyone.  Guys; Dylan, Carole Anne and I need to run an errand.  Mr.and Mrs. Weaver will be here shortly with your checks.”

Carole Anne and Dylan took Beau to the bank and then stopped and picked up some envelopes.  When they returned, the Weavers were there talking to the guys.  They had brought Denny and Danny with them.  They handed each of the guys a check.  Beau just put his in his pocket without looking at it.  The Weavers left and Beau handed everyone another envelop including Carole Anne and Dylan.

Berto looked into his two envelopes and started to cry.  Beau went to Berto and said, “Berto, what's the problem?”

“Beau, you don’t understand.  I’ve never had more than a $5.00 a week allowance.  Now I have more money than I know what to do with.”

“Well, go set up an education fund at the bank and see how fast it grows.”  Beau said.

Matthew went to Beau and hugged him and said, “Thank you for including me.”

Corky looked at everyone and started to shake.  Beau grabbed him and said, “Listen Cutter, if you’re going to be a friend of ours, you need to be strong and accept the unexpected.”

Denny, Danny, Mickey and Chris were shaking their heads and laughing.  They knew that Beau had struck again.

Beau said, “Let’s go home.  We’re done here.  Carole and Dylan take the first four guys home and then come back for the other four of us.”

The first four guys were dropped off and they picked up Beau and the rest after Beau made sure the house was secure.  As he and Corky were getting out, Beau said, “Pop back over and I’ll fix you dinner.”

“Beau, we need to go pack and I have to make some phone calls.” Dylan said.  “We’ll see you here at 7:45 in the morning.  Everyone is to meet here.”

Beau went in and started to fix dinner and then made a couple of phone calls.  Everyone had arrived and Jason was complaining, “Beau, who’s going to make sure that the pool is open when you’re gone?”

“Guess you’ll just have to make sure you have sufficient life guards and adults on hand before you guys swim.  Now, I need to make a call.”

Beau called our house, “Jeff, I need you and Dad to break into the safe and get Jason’s and my money.  We need to put it to work.”

Jeff and I went to Josh and Ben’s house and handed the guys their folders.  Beau and Jason went upstairs and got some more money and Beau emptied his pockets.  He was sitting at the table making a deposit slip.  Jason was sitting across from him doing the same thing.

We were watching them and Ben said, “Guys, you should never keep all that money in the house.”

“What are we supposed to do?  Everyone is always so busy that we never have time to go to the bank.  Now how much money should I take with me tomorrow?”  Beau asked.

Josh said, “None.  Aunt Evelyn gave me this for you and said I was to give it to you for your trip.”

Beau opened the envelope and there was $500.00.  He read the note and started to get tears in his eyes.

I spoke up and said “Beau and Jason, here are the checks I received while you were my foster sons.  Mrs. Rice delivered the last one today.”

Beau bristled, “Well why didn’t you spend them like you were supposed to do?  Almost everyone else in the world would have.”

I interrupted and said, “I had told Mrs. Rice that I didn’t want the money, but she said her hands were tied and it was up to me to decide what to do.  Jeff and I decided that it would be signed over to your Education account and the same thing goes for Tommy, and he didn’t argue with me.”

Beau put his hands to his head and said, “I think we need to go for a swim.  I can’t handle much more right now.  Come on Jason; put your money in your folder and let’s go for a swim.  Dads, put these folders in a safe place.”

Beau went to the phone and called, “Matthew, the pool is open if you want to swim.”

“Cork, the pool will be open if some of you want to swim.”

Jason called Larry and they were on their way.

Beau said, “Jeff, go get your suits and may I borrow your digital camera to take with me to the nude dude ranch please?”

The three guys left and Josh said, “This worries me.  Beau actually asked somebody for something.  You don’t suppose he’s not feeling well.”

Jason and Beau came down in their swimming suits and uncovered the pool.  The rest of the guys arrived.  It was just Matthew and the three oldest Cutter boys and Larry and Lenny.  The guys had just started to swim when Mr. and Mrs. Cooper and Mr. and Mrs. Weaver arrived.

Beau looked at them and crawled out and dried his hands.  He looked at them with a troubled look and asked, “Is something wrong?”

Mr. Cooper said, “Yes and no.”

Beau shrugged his shoulders and said, “Tell me the yes part first.”

Mrs. Weaver said, “When I made out your check, I made a mistake.”

Beau said, “I thought $2700.00 was a little high.

Mrs. Weaver said, Beau, it was way low.  That was only your portion of the two big sales.  I forgot to add in all of your other sales so here is another check.  We thought maybe you could use some of it on your trip.”

Beau looked at the check and said, “So if I quit now, then I won’t be getting anymore money right?”

Mrs. Weaver said, “Not exactly, we still haven’t finalized the Dover account.  We figured we could do that when you get back.”

Beau said, “I wrote Mrs. Dover a note that said I would settle my part of the account with her then also. Now what’s the no part?”

Mr. Cooper handed Beau $250.00 and said, “This is to cover any expenses that Chip might have on the trip.”

“That’s very nice of you people.  I can’t believe the metamorphosis since the first time I met you.”  Beau said.

Mr. Cooper laughed and said, “I hope you approve.”

Beau said, “Very definitely.”  He gave them all a big hug and kiss.

They had just left when Spencer came in with Kevin and Tyler.  “Hey Beau, how much money do I need to take with me?”

Beau said, “Just go get one of my swim suits and keep your briefs on and I’ll tell you when you get into the pool.  Hey Kev and Ty, how are your classes going?”

They put up their thumbs as Josh got them a beer.

Spencer had joined the guys in the pool when Les and Mrs. Wanamaker arrived.  Beau leaned over and asked, “Where are the guys?”

“They’re so excited about going tomorrow that they are having a difficult time settling down.  When we left, Dale was laying in Jeremy’s bed with a boy on each side of him reading.” Mrs. W. said.

“Oh so you’re saying that it’s not working then?”  Beau asked.

Les said, “It’s going to be awfully quiet around our house when they are gone.”

“Okay, so you came to give me money for the guys’ trip, right?” Beau asked.

“Yes.” said Mrs. Wanamaker. “I have $1000.00 for the guys.  Do you think that is enough?”

Beau said, “Grandmama, that’s too much.  Chip’s grandparents gave me $250.00 for him so I would say that $500.00 is still too much.  Just give it to my Dad.  Pop, get these people a drink.  Grandmama needs a tall scotch.  Icky tell Pop what you want.”

Beau was in the pool talking with Matthew and Corky when Judge Leavitt came over and said, “Matthew, your parents want you to come home right now.  Come on we’ll take you.”  She turned to Beau and said “Beau, have a great time on your trip.  We’ll see you when you get back.”

The three Cutter boys were called home and Mitchell picked up Lenny and Larry.  Beau and Jason were covering the pool when Mrs. Tillison arrived.  Josh got her a drink and the guys came over and greeted her.  She handed Beau an envelope and said, “I want you to use this to make sure that you and the guys have a great week.”

Beau thought about arguing but decided against saying anything and just said, “Thank you Grams; I’ll make sure that we have a good time.”

Beau took the money from Josh and went inside and took a shower.  Jeff took Beau his camera and we left as did everyone else.  Beau packed his duffel bag and a back pack since Carole Anne had told him that there was a no cost laundry.  He figured he would take fewer clothes and do laundry more often.

Beau went down and got the rest of his money from his Dads and finished the deposit.  “Dads, we need to change our accounts to put you on them as responsible agents.  Right now Doctor Dad Wilson is on them.  I don’t care if all three of you are on them.  I trust all of you.”  He kissed the two guys and took off.

Jason came and sat down with Ben and Josh.  “Granddad and Dad, could you take us like to Kansas City or somewhere.  I don’t want to work all weekend.  It’s going to be very boring without Beau.”

Ben said, “Son we’ll talk about it.  I think you need to go to bed now,”

Jason hugged and kissed them both and took off.

To be continued...

Feedback always welcome:

Editor's Notes:

I wish I had the kind of luck that Beau has had lately. I never seem to be able to make things work as well as he does.
