Chapter 10
Another Shipment

The next morning it was raining, Arnie came over and he and Beau worked on the new equipment.  “Beau, I may never go home.  It’s a zoo around here.  I can’t believe everything that happens here.  They will be picking up my furniture this afternoon. And tomorrow morning if you can get the drawers emptied.”

“Never fear, Super Beau and his friends are here.  If it keeps raining, we’ll enlist the eleven and nine year olds to help.  Don’t forget Mr. Lockwood wants his things loaded today too.  You are trying to make us all old before our time.”

Arnie left and Beau delivered the coffee and tea and showered.  He was fixing blueberry waffles.  Aunt Evelyn said, “Beau, you can’t keep fixing things like this for us and our van will never get back to Peoria because we weigh too much.”

“All some people do is complain.  Now eat your food.  You’re going to have a busy morning.  You all have to help us pack Mrs. Dover’s thing especially her personal items.  I can’t believe she trusts us to do this when she is not even here.  I’ll get Uncle Lyle and Aunt Rea to bring you to the house once I get the boxes.”  Beau said as he started to eat.

The phone rang and Beau answered.  “Okay Kevin, I’ll be at Mrs. Dover’s at 8:15.  Come on Dad, I have to go since I have the key.  I’ll expect you ladies and everyone you can enlist about 9:00.  I’ll have some nine year olds to help me plus Berto and Matthew.”

Beau made a couple of calls, “Let’s go Dad and Jason.  We have work to do.”

Ben did the clean up and Beau and Jason started to make boxes that Kevin had delivered to the garage.  They took the boxes to the different rooms and started emptying the things in the guest bedroom drawers when everyone else started to arrive.  Beau had everyone working and Beau had Aunt Evelyn and Rea packing away Mrs. Dover’s personal things.

Beau put Berto and Matthew to clearing and wrapping the dishes in the dining room with Uncle Lyle’s help.  Jason, Ginny and Luke were working in the kitchen.

At the store, the lifeguards and all the eleven year olds were there with other 13 year olds loading Mr. Lockwood’s van.  They made short work of the loading and Mr. Lockwood paid the Weavers who in turn paid the visitors who had been working.  “We’ll pay the regular guys later today.”

Mr. Lockwood stopped to say goodbye to Beau and was amazed at what he saw.  Beau even had Arnie working.  Everyone left at noon except for Beau, Matthew, Berto and Mr. Schwarz.  Arnie said, “I’ll spring for lunch.  What do you guys want?”

Beau said, “Anything, but make it healthy.”

Arnie and Matthew left and came back with turkey and ham sandwiches and some juice with a tray of fresh melons.  The guys were sitting on the deck when the movers arrived.  Beau had Arnie checking the items as they were loaded on the truck.  Berto and Matthew were putting the paintings and artworks in the garage.  The movers finished loading the truck by four since there were no boxes.

The truck left and Arnie handed the guys who were there each a $100.00.  He handed Beau another envelope and said, you need to pay all of the people who worked this morning.  “I can’t believe you people.  Matthew, I’m glad to see that you aren’t afraid to work.”

The guys at the store had quit at 4:00.  They had been rearranging and making sales.  Mrs. Weaver said, “Guys, I need to talk with Beau about the commission on the two big sales plus I have no idea what to do about Mrs. Dover’s purchases.”

Denny said, “Ma’am, just write us one check each week.  Beau never gives us time to spend any money plus most of us sit with children on the weekends.”

Mr. Weaver took the guys home.  Beau had fixed dinner and Ben, Josh, Ginny and Aunt Evelyn were having their cocktails when the phone rang.  Beau answered, “Hey Mr. Carstairs, I have another shipment of artwork that I would like to have picked up on Friday. … There are several good pieces.  I know that there is a painting by Mary Cassatt and one by Georgia O’Keefe.  To be honest with you I don’t know what we have sir. … We’ll discuss the commission when you get here. …  There will be five separate accounts. ... Thanks for calling back. … See you Friday at 9:30.  I’ll be here at our house and we can start from here. ... Bye sir.”

Beau hung up and said, “Dinner is ready.  I cheated a little today.  We’re having prepared frozen things tonight.  I was out of steam and my mind is scattered in ten directions.  There is no way I can go to Colorado.”

Josh, Ben and Aunt Evelyn said in unison, “You’re going to Colorado.  You need to get away or you will have a nervous breakdown.”

When they finished eating Beau said, “Jason, you need to do the cleanup tonight.  Oh here is an envelope for you. I also have one for Grandma Ginny, Aunt Evelyn, Aunt Rea, Uncle Lyle and Luke.”

Ginny and Aunt Evelyn both said, “Beau, you don’t need to pay us.”

“I didn’t.  Mr. Schwarz did.”  Beau said, as he went to the door.  “Hey Kenny and Drew, thanks for coming.  Dads, we’re going shopping for paint and supplies.  Dad, Matthew and his Grandmother are here.  Jason, see if Uncle David and Uncle Boris can serve as the lifeguards and then you can swim for an hour.”

Beau left and Ginny and Aunt Evelyn said, “Jason, we’ll do the cleanup.  You go see if David and Boris are available.”

Jason did as he was told and when he came back, he made some calls and people started to arrive.  Jason and Luke uncovered the pool.  Jason gave David and Boris whistles.  Before long there were 14 boys in the pool.  After the young guys swam for 30 minutes, Jason took David’s whistle and blew three times and said, “Ten minute break while Uncle David and Uncle Boris swim.”

The young guys were sitting on the sides when Jeff, Tommy, Uncle Lyle and I arrived.  Everyone else was on the patio watching the guys except for Josh and Matthew.  Jason blew the whistle three times and David and Boris got out and the young guys took over the pool.

Matthew and Josh came out and Matthew said, “Thanks for your time Dr. Benson.”

Josh left and a little while later came out and handed a slip of paper to Mrs. McDowell.

Beau arrived with Berto, Kenny and Drew.  Beau said, “Thanks for your help guys.”

Beau closed the pool and David and Boris came over and said, “I don’t know many young people who would have made time for us to swim.”

Matthew said, “Uncle David and Uncle Boris, that’s the way all of these people are.  I hope you can spend some more time here so that you can get indoctrinated by Beau.  He says it is all Jeff’s fault.”

People started to leave and Mrs. McDowell said, “I’ll be here tomorrow night with Mark.”

Beau told the 13 and 14 year olds to be at his house at 8:30 in the morning to go paint.  He turned to Kenny, Drew and Tommy and said, “See if you can line up some others to help finish painting tomorrow night.  Dylan, Carole Anne, Mitchell and Barbee will be helping.  Drew, check to see if Adam and Aaron are available.  Standard pay scale applies.”

“Beau, Boris and I aren’t leaving until Friday.  We’re here to help.  It will give us something to do while everyone is at work.”  David said.

“Well why didn’t you say so?  Be here at 8:30 and you can take Corky and me and we can pick up Berto and Matthew.”  Beau said.

Beau handed Uncle Lyle and Luke their envelopes.  Uncle Lyle asked, “What is this for?”

Beau said, “It’s from Uncle Arnie for the work you did this morning.”

Uncle Lyle handed it back to Beau and said, “Put it in the homeless and needy fund at the church along with yours.”

“Uncle Lyle, give it to Spencer and tell him to take care of it since I won’t be here for the next two Sundays by orders of everyone.”  Beau said.

Uncle Lyle handed it to Spencer and Grandma Ginny and Aunt Evelyn did likewise.  Rea had arrived to pick up Larry and Lenny and she likewise handed her envelope to Spencer.

Luke asked, “Am I supposed to do the same thing?  I never had this much money of my own before.”

Beau shook his head, “Nope, you need to save your money for college.”

Everyone had left and Jason went to bed.  Beau was talking to Josh, Ben, Ginny and Aunt Evelyn.  “So Dad, what's Matthew’s IQ?”

“Beau, I’m not sure why I am doing this testing.  Matthew indeed does have an IQ of about 140.” Josh said.

Beau got up and asked, “Aunt Evelyn, tea and iced water?”

She nodded and Beau retrieved them and escorted her to her room.  He then took care of Ginny and helped her to her room.  Beau came back and kissed Ben and Josh and disappeared.

Wednesday morning was clear and Beau was sitting outside waiting for people to go running.  Jason came out and sat down beside him.  Father Wanamaker and Jeremy and three oldest Cutter boys arrived as David and Boris pulled in with Matthew and Luke and Jeff and Tommy arrived.

The guys ran a leisurely three mile course.  Beau and Jason served the coffee and tea.  Jason took a shower while Beau fixed breakfast and then Jason did the cleanup while Beau showered.

Corky and Beau were outside when David and Boris came out.  They stopped and picked up Berto and Matthew.  When they got to the Dover house, they went upstairs and started to tape all of the wood work.  When the upstairs was finished, Beau had David and Boris start to tape the downstairs.  The four teenagers started painting and Beau left to make several phone calls.

Beau called Anita.  “Aunt Anita, can you come over to Mrs. Dover’s house?  I need your help.  Okay, see you in 30 minutes.”

Dylan, Carole Anne, Mitch and Barbee arrived and Beau put them to work.  Anita arrived and Beau explained what he wanted to do for window treatments.  “Why don’t you call Aunt Rea, Grandma Ginny, and Aunt Evelyn and ask them to help you since they know the house and they would be doing something different.”

Beau started to work in the kitchen with Carole Anne and Barbee.  They unloaded the cabinets and they were painting them.

At lunchtime, Beau sent Dylan and Mitchell to get some pizzas, salads and some juice.  When the guys came back, they took a short break and when Beau finished painting the cabinets in the kitchen at 3:00, he closed the job. “Okay we’re done until this evening.  Everyone meet at my house at 3:30 and there will be an open swim.  Somebody needs to take me by the store so I can tell the other guys.”

Dylan and Carole Anne took Beau and they collected the four guys who had been working at the store.  Everyone was assembled at Josh and Ben’s house and there were approximately 35 people around the pool.  Beau called me since he knew I was home and told Uncle Lyle and me go get 20 pounds of lean ground beef, 10 heads of lettuce, 30 tomatoes, 100+ taco shells and grated cheddar cheese.

We did as we were told and left a note for Tommy and Jeff to join us at Beau’s house.  When we arrived, Beau and his friends unloaded the groceries.   They went to work preparing tacos.  When everyone was assembled they had set up an assembly line and everyone had tacos, refried beans and Spanish rice.

Everyone was sitting around outside eating.  The young people were on the ground and the adults were on the patio.  Mark sat down beside Beau and asked, “Beau, why am I going to work with your Dad tonight.  I don’t want to.”

Beau got a funny look on his face and said, “Kid, we need to go talk.  You have some issues that we need to address.  You have an attitude problem we have to fix.”

Mark just looked at him and followed Beau into Beau’s bedroom.  “Now what is your problem?  Matthew and Luke didn’t complain and they had a good time.”

“Beau, I’m not Matthew or Luke.  I’m weak and everyone is always ordering me around.” Mark said.

Beau dove for Mark and put him on the floor and held his hand up as if he was going to hit Mark.  Mark didn’t even move or flinch.  Beau was shaking and pulled Mark up and said, “Mark, you just told me that you are submissive and that you are probably gay.  I don’t care if you are gay but I sure as hell don’t want you to be submissive.”

“Beau, I don’t know what you are talking about exactly but I think you are the most beautiful person I know and I want you to like me.”  Mark answered.

“Leavitt, you stay right here until I get back.  If you’re not here, I will find you and lead you around by that thing between you legs.  Now chill.”   Beau said as he left the room.

Beau came and got David and Boris.  When they got to the bedroom Mark was lying there crying.  Beau barked, “Leavitt, stand up and show your Uncles that you are a man.”  Beau grabbed Mark and stood him on his feet.

Mark started to go down.  Beau held him and said, “Uncle David and Uncle Boris, Mark is probably gay which doesn’t bother me.  The problem is he is also submissive and may get hurt badly.  We need to get him so he can take care of himself and whip anyone who would take advantage of him.  I think that you need to take Mark and Luke white water rafting with you and make them both men.”

Mark finally stood by himself and looked at Beau and said, “Our parents will never let that happen.”

“Bet me buddy.  If I make it possible for you two go with your Uncles you each owe me a thousand bucks.”

Beau left and came back and said, “Grandma McDowell says she’ll take care of it.  You are going.  Mark, you had better be strong for Luke.  Now does anyone have any questions?”

Mark looked at Beau and asked, “So when are we going?”

Beau looked at David and Boris and asked, “So when are you leaving?”

“Beau, we only have two reservations.  We can’t take them along even though we would like to.”  Alex said.

Beau didn’t miss a beat and said, “Bet me.  Give me a number to call and I’ll take care of it.”

David handed him a card and Beau dialed and said, “Hi, this is Beau.  I am just calling to tell you that the David Leavitt party has been increased to four.  Is there any problem with that? …Yeah, they will be arriving late Friday night.  The two new persons are pre-teenagers, but they are strong and smart.  … You do require that all your participants wear life vests don’t you? ... Great, I’m just a little worried about Doctor Leavitt and Dr. Dorsey.  They are going to need some watching.  The two young guys will be fine.”

“Oh Mr. Harkins, you will make sure the guys get enough to eat, won’t you?   They both get mean and ornery when they are hungry and they eat all the time. … Great Mr. Harkins, you take care of my retards for me. … Nice visiting with you.  Maybe some day I can afford to take a trip with you.  Now you make sure you take care of my four guys. Bye sir.”

When Beau hung up, he was jumped on by Mark, “I’ll teach you to call me a retard.”

Beau flipped Mark over and Mark started to fight and Beau immobilized him.  Mark just went limp but when Beau started to relax, Mark kicked Beau where it hurt.  Beau was momentarily stunned and said, “Take this creep downstairs and tell my Dad to torture him.  I think maybe I misjudged him a little.”

The four of them returned and Beau announced, “Time to go finish painting.”

Everyone who could, went to the Dover house to help and Mark went to work with Josh without any resistance.

The people finished painting the house and Beau made sure that everything was locked and secured.  When he got home, he was totally exhausted.  He came in and helped Aunt Evelyn to her room while Jason helped his Grandmother.

Beau came down after taking a shower.  Josh and Ben said, “Beau, you are not going to work tomorrow night.  We’re having a farewell dinner for the Peoria people at the club and it’s already paid for so don’t even think twice.”

Josh asked, “Beau, what did you do to Mark?  He thinks you walk on water and…”

Beau interrupted, “I know, I was a little low on his IQ but he is just about to come into his own.  He is really a neat young man and he is definitely gay.  We just need to teach him to control his hormones until he can make intelligent decisions.  Now Dads, I’m going to bed.  This has been a horrible day.  I love you.”

To be continued...

Editor's Notes:

That was beautiful. I love it when a plan comes together, even it wasn't originally planned.
