Chapter 7

Uncle Arnie

On Saturday morning the young guys were all up.  Beau had them all working.  He took Ben and Josh coffee.  He had tea for Aunt Evelyn and delivered Ginny’s coffee.  He informed everyone that they had 45 minutes before breakfast.

The guys had everything ready when the adults arrived.  They served them their baked scrambled egg casseroles.  Aunt Evelyn threw up her arms and said, “Beau, I’m going to get fat.”

Beau said, “Darling, you’d better eat up, because this is the last food in the house.  Dads did you hear that?  It’s time to restock the cabinets.  Here I made you a list.”

Shortly after 8:30, the truck pulled in and Beau went out.  “Hey guys, you’re early.  Would you like a cup of coffee?”

The guys looked at Beau and said, “You’re everywhere.  We’d love a cup of coffee.”

Beau got the coffee and opened the garage door.  Corky, Matthew, Berto and Denny arrived, as did Mr. Cooper.  Everyone pitched in and the garage was empty in no time.  Mr. Matthews had picked up Elliott and Ethan and stuck an envelope in Beau’s pocket.

Mr. Cooper took the guys and they followed the truck to the store.  They stuffed the things in the extra store room.  Denny asked, “Beau, where are we going to put Mrs. Dover’s things?  There is no more room until we get the things she buys out of here.”

The guys went to the store and started to rearrange things.  Customers were starting to come and Beau was constantly interrupted by the newer guys and asked for his help.  His clients were impressed and bought even more.  Danny, Mickey and Chris left just before noon.  The rest of them continued to work and Mr. Cooper got them sandwiches and juice.  They ate in between customers.

Finally there was a lull and Mr. Weaver said, “Guys, I don’t know what you’re doing, but we are on a pace to set a one day record for sales.  You young men are fabulous and customers think that you are all most refreshing and so unassuming.”

Beau said, “Then we should get a fifteen percent commission and we could all retire.”

Denny got up and put his hand over Beau’s mouth.  “Ignore him sir, the General is out of control again.”  Berto, Corky, and Matthew were sitting there laughing.

Beau stood up and said, “I’m going home if I’m going to be treated like a slave.”

Berto said, “Benson, sit down.  You can’t go home.  Mrs. Dover will be here shortly, and you are the only one she will work with.  “I’ll bet she winds up owing you money when this is all over.”

Mrs. Dover came in.  She and Beau started to look around and she said, “I’m so confused.  I just want my house to look totally different.  I don’t want anything to remind me of the jerk, including the paintings and things that he was always giving as tokens of his love, and then he runs off with that bimbo.”

“Beau, I am leaving for Saint Louis in the morning and I won’t be back until a week from Monday.  When I get home, I want the house to have a totally different feel.  I have my own money, so I can pay whatever.  Get your friends to help and pay them a fair wage.  Here are the keys and if you really need to talk to me, call me at this number.  I just don’t want to think about this anymore, so you’re in charge.”  She turned and left.

“Beau, you look like you are in a state of shock.”  Berto said.

“Guys, I can’t handle this alone.  I’m going to need everyone’s support.   Mr., and Mrs. Weaver and Mr. and Mrs. Cooper, this is all your fault.”

Before anyone could say anything more, a big burly man came in.  “I’m here to see all this wonderful merchandise that you supposedly have that you are pawning off as antiques.  I don’t see anything that has any value.  I’ll give you $10,000.00 for the lot.”

That woke Beau up.  He went to the guy and said, “You’re either stupid or a con man.  The furniture in the room has a value of $150,000.00 alone and we have a bunch more so stop your game right now or I’ll call the Chief of Police who is a personal friend and have you run out of town.”

“Matthew, why don’t you work with this weirdo?  It’s your turn to make a sale.  I need to visit with the Weavers and the Coopers.”  Beau said.

“Hi Uncle Arnold, good to see you.  Does Grandmother know you are in town?”  Matthew asked.

Beau asked, “Which Grandmother?”

Matthew said, “This is Grandmother Leavitt’s brother.”

Beau said, “Matthew, call your Grandmother and see if she is home.  We need to talk to her.”

Matthew made the call and handed the phone to Beau, “Hey Judge, there is a loud mouth here who Matthew says is your brother and he is acting like some big business tycoon without any manners.  He's trying to con us in to thinking he knows more than we do.  Could you please control him or otherwise we won’t even talk to him?  He made us the most ridiculous offer.”

Beau handed the phone to Mr. Schwarz who turned purple while he was talking to Judge Leavitt.  “Yes Marilyn, I understand.  I’ll apologize.”

He hung up and left the store and came back in.  “Hi, I’m Arnie Schwartz.  I’m here perhaps to make you a fair deal on some of your antiques.  I would like to have them shipped to my store in New York City.  I don’t see any art works.  They are really selling well in New York.”

Beau came and acted like nothing happened.  “Sir, I am Beau.  We’re getting ready to close for the weekend.  We haven’t gotten into selling art works.  Mr. Carstairs in Omaha handles our art work for a small fee.”

All of a sudden Mr. Schwarz said, “You are one of the two young guys who sold your things recently.  I heard that auction went really well and that you both made…”

Beau interrupted and said, “Yeah, Adam and I only made a couple hundred bucks because everyone was trying to steal our money away from us.  Now Mr. Schwarz, maybe you could come back Monday or Tuesday, after we get everything in place.  We are all exhausted and need to go for a swim.  See you next week.”

Beau turned to the Coopers and Weavers and said, “Let’s lock up.  We’re all exhausted.  People will always come back if they are really interested.  You all need some downtime too.”

Mrs. Weaver said, “Guys, I have your checks made out.  Beau, I couldn’t include your commission for Mrs. Dover because I don’t understand all that is happening.”

“Mrs. Weaver, at this time, my mind is like a dozen scrambled eggs.  So much has happened these last two weeks.  It seems like it started over a year ago.”

Mr. Cooper took the guys home and he dropped Beau off last.  “Beau, I so wish you could have been my son.  Chip adores you, Jeff and Spencer.  Please don’t let any harm come to him.  He has so much love to give that I am afraid it will get him into trouble.”

“Not to worry sir. Chip is a brilliant young man, and he will never permit anyone to take advantage of him.  Just be there and support him regardless if he’s winning or losing.”

Beau reached over and kissed Mr. Cooper.  “Thanks for caring, Sir.”

Beau dashed into the house.  “Everyone, it’s free swim time.   Last one in pays for dinner.”   Jason and Beau had the pool uncovered in no time.  The guys who had been working showed up as did Matthew’s three brothers and his Uncle Arnie and the Grandparent Leavitts who brought two pitchers of daiquiris.

The Cutters arrived with a large plate of healthy munchies.  Beau had brought out the phone.  When it rang, Ben answered and handed it to Beau.  Beau looked at the caller ID.  “Hi this is Beau … Sure, bring the boys over … Oh the Easley boys also.  Tell everyone to get swim suits on.  We’re swimming and will be for an hour.  We’ll feed them and then I’ll have my Dads take us back to your house. … Okay, bye sir.”

Beau went to the refrigerator and started pulling out things and came out and said, “Dad, please go get ten pounds of lean ground hamburger and a bunch of rolls.  Oh and bring back a big watermelon.  Dads, I didn’t plan this party.  It just happened.  Make sure we have lots of juice.  I gotta go make sure everyone is okay.”

Aunt Evelyn and Ginny were having a wonderful time with all the young people being around.  Beau blew his whistle three times and said, “Ten minute rest period for any one who isn’t a teenager or older.”  The teens dove into the pool accompanied by Mr. Schwarz.

Mr. Schwarz said, “Come on guys, I’ll race all of you four laps of the pool free style.”

Beau handed his whistle to Jason.  Jason blew the whistle and the guys plus Mr. Schwarz dove in.  Before anyone knew what was happening, except for Denny, Beau pulled away and was getting out.  Denny finished second and the rest were pushing themselves to finish.

When everyone had touched, Beau was standing there with his hands on his hips.  “So what took so long?  Our hair is turning gray just waiting for you.”

He blew his whistle and the younger guys got back in as he went to fix dinner with Aunt Evelyn and his Dads’ help.

Beau blew the whistle three times.  He started to cook the hamburgers and the fixings appeared and everyone ate outside.  When everyone was finished eating, they made short work of the cleanup and Beau let everyone swim for another half hour before he finally closed the pool.  He made his eight guys take a shower and change.  He had Ben and Josh take him the eight boys plus Matthew to the Carpenter’s.

Beau had the guys get ready for bed and he started to read James and the Giant Peach with the eight guys cuddled around him and Matthew.  Beau stopped and said, “I’ll read more the next time, but now you guys need to go to bed.  I want you all to go to the bathroom and brush your teeth.”

As the guys came out and crawled into their beds.  He hugged them and gave them each a kiss.  He and Matthew went downstairs and were reading but Matthew fell asleep.  When the adults arrived Beau was still reading.  Beau woke Matthew up and said, “The guys have been wonderful.  Matthew is a little tired.  He has had a busy day.  He’s finding out what it is like to be in the real world.”

Doctor Carpenter took the guys home and Beau stuck half of what he had been paid in Matthew’s pocket.  Beau went into the house and locked up.
