You Bet Your Booties
The phone woke me at 6:29. “Good morning Dad, this is your wake up call. Bye, gotta go. Father W’s ready to run.”
I threw on a robe and went downstairs to make coffee. The coffee was made and there was a note from Jeff that said, “See you after work tonight.”
I walked around thinking, I can’t believe that I lived alone for 15 years; I must have been a very boring person. I took my shower and got ready and was finishing a piece of coffee cake when Davey came in. “Doctor Dad, will you please give me a ride to Gigi’s house this morning. Dad had to go in early.”
“Sure thing.” I said, smiling, as I rinsed my plate and mug.
Ben was dropping Jason off. I asked Ben who would be bringing Jeremy and Roddy to the office.
“Beau has arranged for Mrs. Wanamaker and Dale to bring them and then they are going to Target to get them some clothes and Mrs. Wanamaker wants Beau to help get their groceries. That’s just in the morning, and then he has Berto, Jonathan and Denny are coming in the afternoon to do some things. I honestly can not keep up with him. He even talked to Judge Leavitt this morning and was talking to Mrs. Rice when I left.”
“Join the club.” I laughed and went to the office.
When I walked into the office, Jill said, “Doctor Wilson, your first patient is in your office. He insisted that’s where he wanted to see you. The other three Doctors are already busy with patients. Doctor Crane has two of the cutest young men with him. Doctor Ted and Doctor Andy are both with patients in the trailers. I need to go see if they need anything. Lash is helping Doctor Crane.”
I walked into my office and Beau was sitting in my chair. “Morning Doctor. I was beginning to think I was going to need Doctor Icky’s services before you got here. Did you miss us this morning? I figured I’d better come and give you a kiss. You must have been lonely in that big old house of yours this morning.”
Beau got up and gave me a kiss and said, “Love you, Dad. Have a good day. I’ll talk to you tonight. Why don’t you and Jeff come to our house for dinner? Bye now, gotta go check on the guys.”
Toni came in and said, “I just saw a cyclone go by. Doctor Wilson, you have a patient in exam room 3.”
Beau went to room 1 and knocked on the door. He was told to enter and went in. “Hi guys, did you get your rabies shots yet? Did Lash drink all of you blood? How many cooties did they find on you? Did they find any bed bugs crawling over your bodies?”
Jeremy got up and put his hand over Beau’s mouth. “If you would be quiet, Doctor Crane was gong to tell us what we need to do. Now listen.”
Les said, “Father W., go get your Grandmother, so she can hear the prescriptions.”
Dale got his Grandmother. “I want everyone to listen to me.” Les said.
“I prescribe that Jeremy and Roddy come live at our house. I
further prescribe that the three of us are going to be your foster parents for
now, here’s the hard part. Beau, I want you to take this card, and take our
foster sons to Target and get them some clothes that fit and would you and
Grandmother and the boys make sure you buy all of the groceries we will need to
get them fat. Now, are there any questions?”
Roddy squeaked, “Does that mean we are going to be living with you?
“Yes, are you upset by that?” Dale asked.
Jeremy asked, “Where are we going to be sleeping?”
Les said, “You will each have your own bedroom. They will be connected by a bathroom, and you can leave the bathroom doors open at night so if you get scared, you can go through the bathroom and dive bomb your brother and crawl in bed with him.”
Beau raised his hand, “Yes Mister Benson.”
Beau asked, “Does that mean if the door is closed that you must knock and wait to be asked to enter?”
“That’s exactly right.” answered Les. “Are there any other questions?”
Beau said, “No Doctor Icky, but everyone is expected at my new house for dinner tonight. It will be something easy.”
Beau hugged Les. Jeremy went and shook Les’s hand and thanked him. Roddy put his arms around Les and Les picked him up and kissed him on the cheek. “Doctor C., that’s not the way to kiss someone,” Roddy said, as he held Les’s face and kissed him on the lips. “That’s how you do it.”
Les said, “I think you'd better do it again so I can make sure I get it right.”
Roddy gave him another kiss, and Les put him down and Roddy went to Mrs. W. and said, “Come on Grandmama, let’s go. He took her and Dale’s hand as they left.
Jeremy looked at Beau and Beau just nodded and Jeremy went to Les and hugged him and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and said, “Thank you sir.”
Beau opened the door and said, “Thanks Doctor Quack, see you tonight.”
The two guys stopped at the nurse’s station. “Aunt Jill, you, Uncle Reg and Chip will be at my new house at 6:00 tonight for an impromptu dinner. Mrs. Crosby, you and Mr. Crosby and your two sons are also expected. No excused absences. Goodbye, see you all about six.”
Dale said, “I need to get back to the church. I’ll see everyone about five.”
Roddy went to him and said, “I’d better give you a kiss to get you through the day.”
Dale was thrilled and held Roddy and reciprocated. Roddy said, “Love you Daddy W.”
Jeremy froze for a minute but said, “Thank you for caring, Father
W. I’m so overwhelmed by everything.”
Dale pulled Jeremy close and said, “I understand, son.”
Jeremy went limp and Roddy went to him and asked, “Jer, are you okay?”
“Sorry, when Father Wanamaker called me son, it was like all my worries flew out the window. May I call you Daddy W. too?”
Mrs. W. was standing by Beau. They held each other and had tears in their eyes. Beau whispered, “This is working out better than I could have hoped. Do you like your grandsons?”
“You bet your booties, Beau. I’m in love with them both. There is no way that I can leave, now. Come on men; let’s see how much damage we can do to Doctor Crane’s card.” Mrs. W. ordered.
They took off for Target. Beau said, “We’re only going to get you the basics now, because I have a feeling you both are going to be growing a lot over this summer.” Beau made sure they got everything except shoes.
They had all of the clothes and Mrs. W. and Beau went and got two more carts and started filling them with food. Mrs. W. wisely listened to what the boys suggested, but carefully monitored the junk food. They had the three carts filled with things and went to the check out area.
Beau spotted Pete and led everyone there. Jeremy challenged. “Why didn’t we go to that other line that was shorter?”
Beau said, “Because I know Peter, and he is a friend of ours, right Grandmama?”
The guys were busy unloading the carts and Beau was watching the prices. He was not aware that the Manager was bagging his purchases. When the total came up, it was only $421.81. Beau swiped the card and it cleared.
The manager asked, Mr. Benson, would you like help getting this out?”
“No thank you sir, we can manage, but thanks for asking. You all have a great day. Come on guys, we need to motor. We’re falling behind schedule.”
They got back to Les' house and put the groceries away and Beau showed the guys how to wash their clothes. “If you want clean clothes, then you have to wash them yourselves. They loaded the washer with the white things and went to check the guys' rooms.
The beds were made and there were bath towels and things in the bathroom. “Guys, you can fix your clothes anyway you want, but you need to be sure that the drawers are organized and you have nice closets to hang you clothes in. Come on, its lunchtime.”
The guys went downstairs and put the clothes in the dryer and started another load of light colored things. Beau said, “Grandmama, let’s go to the Madison’s for lunch.”
Beau directed Mrs. W. to the Madison’s. The place was busy, but there was one table for four. Beau waved to the Madison’s as they sat down. The server was new, but she knew who Beau was and asked, “How may I help you Mr. Benson?”
Beau looked at the young lady and said, “I’d like a ham salad sandwich on wheat with a side of macaroni salad and a glass of lemonade.”
Mrs. W. said, “I’ll have what he’s having.”
Jeremy said, “I’ll have the same thing.”
Roddy asked, “Can I have a hot dog?”
Beau shook his head and said, “Nope, we’re having hot dogs and hamburgers for dinner.”
“Okay, then I’ll have what everyone else is having.” Roddy frowned.
The food was wonderful and disappeared at warp speed. Mrs. Madison came over and sat down. “We’ve been busy all day. We’re getting ready to close for the long weekend. We’re going to our cabin and vegetate for three days.”
Beau said, “I’ll take all your cookies and pies off your hands. We’re having a small gathering tonight, and I’m sure they will disappear.”
Beau, I’ll give them to you at a reduced rate and I’ll go box them. This way they won’t spoil or go to waste. Can I bring you anything else?’ Mrs. Madison asked.
“We’ll pay for full price for the goods, and if you could sneak us each a scrumptious brownie and not tell Jeff and you might even put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on them.” Beau winked.
Jeremy and Roddy were really smiling when the desserts arrived. The four brownies disappeared. The four of them went to check out, and Beau called Mr. Madison over and said, “Mr. Madison, I would like for you to meet my new friends. This is Mrs. Wanamaker, Father Wanamaker’s Grandmother. These handsome guys are Jeremy and Roddy.”
Mr. Madison looked at them and said, “Beau, where in the world do you find all these good looking men?” He hugged them both and Roddy held his face and kissed him.
When Beau was paying the check, Roddy gave Mrs. Madison a kiss. Everyone was loaded with boxes when they went to the car. They dropped all the purchases off, and after Beau had all the goodies put away, he was on the phone. He called Dylan and Carole Anne and had them helping him. He called Aaron and Adam had them working along with Berto, Jonathan and Danny. By five o’clock when the people started to arrive, no one could tell that Beau was stressed out.
It looked like he had just got out of the shower. Everyone arrived and Beau had Mrs. T., Mrs. W., Aunt Cora, Gigi and Judge Leavitt go through the line first.
Ben and Josh made sure that everyone had what they wanted to drink. Berto, Denny and Danny were helping Beau serve, since Jonathan was working at the Village Inn tonight.
Beau got Spencer and Jeremy hooked up, and they became immediate best friends. Roddy loved both Chip and Trey and it was evident Ranger was very protective of him. Beau rather relaxed after he had his first goal completed.
He had one more goal to accomplish. After everyone finished eating, he got Judge Leavitt, Les, Dale and Mrs. Wanamaker together with Mrs. Rice. Judge Leavitt pointed her finger at Beau and said, “You didn’t tell me this was a business meeting. Are these people the foster/adopted parents that you were talking about this morning?”
Beau smiled and said, “Yes ma’am, do you want to meet the two beautiful young men?”
Beau whistled and the five year olds and Ranger came over. “Guys, this is Mrs. Leavitt. She has a five year old grandson who will be here on Monday. Do you think you can take care of him?”
Chip said, “Hi ma’am. I’m Chip, and my parents are over there. This is Trey and his dog Ranger. This is our new friend Roddy. Isn’t he good looking? Nice that you could come tonight, ma’am.”
Roddy waved at everyone and the guys took off after saying. We’ll see you later. We’re going to play Frisbee with Ranger.”
Beau motioned for Spencer and Jeremy. The two guys came over, and Beau said, “I’d like to introduce my two friends, Spencer Knight, and the other new friend is Jeremy.”
Spencer put out his hand and said, “Hi Judge Leavitt, it’s good
to see you again. Have you met Jeremy, yet?”
“This is Jeremy. He’s going to be living with Father Wanamaker and his Grandmother and Dr. Crane if you and Mrs. Rice can make it happen.”
Jeremy shook Judge Leavitt’s hand and said, “You’re the first judge I have ever met. I thought judges wore black robes like Father W.’s.”
“Jeremy, I only wear them when I have to. The robe is hot and uncomfortable.”
“Well then, why do you wear it?” Jeremy asked. “People would probably see you as a real person if you weren’t dressed like that. Couldn’t you still tell people they had to go to jail without your robe? All you need is that hammer thing and a mean voice and say, ‘You’re going to pay for this.’ Ma’am, you aren’t going to send us back to our father, are you?” Jeremy started shaking.
Beau held Jeremy and Mrs. Leavitt said, “Nope, I’m going to delay my ruling until after I find out what my grandsons think. Is that okay? Now why don’t you and Spencer make sure everyone is having a good time.”
The guys left and Judge Leavitt said, “Beau, can we talk in private with Mrs. Rice.” Beau escorted the two ladies into the study.
“Beau, you and Jeremy have made some damaging accusations. Do you have any proof of what happened?” Judge Leavitt asked.
“Ma’am, both Doctor Crane and Doctor Wilson have examined Jeremy and can verify that he has been sexually abused. We only have Jeremy’s word that he was sexually abused by his father, but I have no reason to doubt what he said.” Beau answered.
“Beau, this is all circumstantial evidence, but I need something concrete. I agree with you that they need a new home, but my hands are tied.”
Beau said, “Mrs. Rice, can you give Father Wanamaker the right to be a foster parent until I get this straightened out, please?”
“Beau, I’ll have it all here on Monday, if we are still invited.” Mrs. Rice answered.
“You’re still invited and I’ll put a cattle prod on Father W. to complete the forms.” Beau said, as he went and got a mobile phone.
He dialed and said, “Hi Mr. Everett, it’s me Beau again. I need your help. I need to find out about a Mister Ziegler as fast as you can. … Hold on Sir.”
Beau left and came back with Jeremy and Mrs. Tillison. “Mr. Everett, I am going to put Jeremy on, and he can tell you where his father lives.”
Beau handed the phone to Jeremy, “Sir, we lived at 701 First Street in West Point. We had to get our mail at the post office. … Yes sir. Okay here’s Mrs. Tillison.”
Jeremy handed the phone to Mrs. T. and Jeremy took off after Beau nodded okay. Mrs. T. took the phone, and after saying hello, said, “I have no idea what’s happening but if Beau called you, it must be important. Let me put Beau back on.”
Beau took the phone and said, “What's wrong Mr. Everett? … Mr. Everett, Mr. Ziegler’s son says that he was sexually abused by his father. We know that he was abused, and it can be confirmed by Doctor Wilson and Doctor Crane. His father was threatening to start doing the same thing to Jeremy’s younger brother Roddy who is only five. I want as much evidence as you can get by... say, Monday at two. I never want that man near either of his sons again. Sir, send me the bill, I don’t want Grams to pay for this. She has already done too much. … Okay sir, bye.”
Beau hung up and said, “Case closed until Monday. I issue a temporary order that says Jeremy and Roddy will be living with Father Wanamaker and his Grandmother until Tuesday morning.”
Beau took a spoon and hit the table and said, “Courts adjourned until further notice. Now let’s go get drunk.”
Mrs. T. held Beau and started to read him the riot act. I walked in and Beau said, “Grams, this is not your problem. I have the situation under control. Doctor Dad, Jeff and Tommy can’t handle two more boys this young. Dad and Granddad are going to have their hands full with Jason and me. Besides, if Grandmama W. has two beautiful boys to spoil in addition to the Headless Horseman and the Cranky Father, she’ll think she’s in heaven. Plus the two boys are adjusting fine. Case closed.” Beau said, as he walked away.
Mrs. T, Judge Leavitt and Mrs. Rice stood there with shocked looks. Mrs. T. said, “Jack, do something with Beau. He can’t go around telling people what to do.”
“Mrs. Tillison, Beau is no longer technically under my control. I’ll visit with him, but he is under a lot of emotional strain too. As you know, Beau feels that if there is an injustice, he goes right for the jugular and he doesn’t care who it is. Think about what happened to Governor Millsap and the bunch of wimps at the Morrison Manufacturing Company.”
Judge Leavitt said, “I hope Mr. Everett can get me some hard evidence. I can’t rule in a case like this without something concrete. Beau isn’t always this animated is he?”
“No ma’am. Usually he’s too busy making money and telling coaches what to do.” I laughed.
We walked out on the patio and Ben and Josh were making sure that everyone had what they needed. There was a soccer game and a volleyball game going on. At nine o’clock, everyone started to disappear. Berto and Beau were cleaning the area and Jason and Davey were rinsing the dishes.
As Jeff and I were driving home, I started to tell Jeff about what had happened. He started to laugh and said, “Dad, this is all your fault.”
“Wait a minute. You’re the one who brought him home.” I challenged.
“Yeh, but you are the one who spoiled him.” Jeff countered.
We just went to bed and hugged each other.
To be continued...
Editor's Notes:
Well, it looks like Beau is as busy as ever, and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. I can't help but love him to pieces. I only wish there were more people in this world like he is.
