Chapter 30
The First Party
The next morning, I was awakened by a different young voice at 7:30. “Doctor Wilson, Jeff said that you need to get up. I brought you a glass of juice and a cup of coffee.
I looked at Jason and said, “Thank you sir, go tell my bossy son that I’ll be there is 20 minutes.”
“Okay sir.” Jason said.
I pulled Jason to me and said, “Okay Mr. Powers, as long as you live here, you will call me either Doctor Dad, like everyone else, or Doctor W.”
Jason hopped on me said. “Okay Doctor Dad, now get up.”
He left and I went to the bathroom and as I was coming out, a voice asked, “Doctor Dad, can I come in, please?”
“Come in Beau.” I called out.
“Doctor Dad, do you know how to make a slide show from tapes?” he asked.
“Nope, go ask Jeff.” I answered.
“I don’t want him to know what I’m doing.” he answered.
“Ask Mickey.” I said, as he took off.
I went downstairs and I could see that Jeff’s mind was on overload. Mickey and Beau were conferring, and Jason had just finished his breakfast and rinsed his dishes and put them in the dish washer when there was a knock on the back door. Jeff answered it and said, “Hi Davey, what can I do for you?”
“Could Jason come over to my house please? It’s so quiet, and my mean doctor says I can't do things like ride my bicycle or skate board yet.” Davey said.
I looked up and said, “I’m sorry, but Jason can’t play with anyone who calls me mean. I guess you will just have to be bored.”
“Please Doctor Wilson, I’m
sorry. Please can he come over?” Davey pleaded.
”Not until he scrubs all the bathrooms and the kitchen floor, and you start
calling me Doctor Dad, or Doctor W. like everyone else.” I pouted.
“Doctor Dad, please let him come over.” Davey pleaded.
Okay, but he has to be home by 11:00. Your parents don’t need to feed him, and remember no wrestling or messing around. Come here, and let me check your scar.” I checked the incision and said, “You still have two more stitches that need to disappear, so you will have to watch your activity until they are gone.”
“Yes, Doctor Dad.” Davey said, dejectedly.
“Jason, go brush your teeth, and then you may go.” I said.
The two nine year olds left and Colin said, “Thanks Jack. Davey has been like a cat walking on hot coals, ever since he got up. I’ll go home and we’ll make sure his stitches aren’t forced out. Send them over when they are ready.”
The guys came down and went out the back door. Jeff said, “I have an errand to run. I’ll be back shortly.”
Sammy walked in and Beau accosted him. They talked quietly and went upstairs. They came down just as Kenny and Drew walked in. Sammy and Beau talked to them and Drew picked up the phone.
“Hi Grandma, Beau and Sammy are on their way over. Would you please meet them and direct them to the media center. They don’t want Jeff or Grams to know what they are doing. … Okay I’ll tell them.” Drew hung and said, “Guys, go to the side opposite the garage. Grandma will meet you there, and take you to the media room.”
The guys did as they were told. The media room had everything they needed. Beau said, “Aunt Cora, if anyone asks what we are doing, tell them that Sammy is working on a project, and I’m helping him.” Beau said, “And you would not be misinforming them.”
The guys went to work and had just finished when there was a knock on the door. Beau opened the door. “Hi, Aunt Cora.”
“General Beauregard, Mrs. Tillison would like to see you in the living room when you are finished.” she announced.
“Thank you Aunt Cora. We’re
all set, and the project is finished.” Beau and Sammy went to the living room.
Mrs. Tillison said, “Jeff and Jason will be here shortly with Doctor Wilson.”
She introduced the others in the room. Beau shook Sheriff Broderick’s hand Mr.
Everett’s hand and hugged Norm and the rest. “Hi, Mr. Burns.” said Sammy, and
then shook the other two gentlemen’s hands. “If you don’t need me, I’m going
back to the house, and taking a shower.”
Sammy was leaving as Jeff, Jason and I arrived.
When we entered the living room, Mrs. Tillison introduced Sheriff Pat Broderick, Mr. Glenn Everett and Mr. Norman Burns for Jason's benefit. Josh and Ben were also there.
Jason was a little intimidated, but he shook everyone’s hand.
Mrs. Tillison looked at Jeff and asked, “Did you bring your tape recorder, Jeff?”
“Yep.” he said, as he pulled it out and turned it on.
Mrs. Tillison started, “We’ll start with Jason.”
“Where is it that you are from, and where is your home?” asked Ben.
Jason told everyone that his home had been in Peoria, Illinois. Then he told all about his life, and how his mother and stepfather were going to a medical specialist in Denver.”
Jeff asked, “Do you have any other relatives than your mother and stepfather?”
“I have my Daddy’s mother, Grandma Ginny Powers, but she lives in an assisted living facility in Peoria, because she can’t walk. She was injured in the accident that killed my Grandpa Powers.”
“Does she have a phone number?” Ben asked.
“Yes, I used to call her almost every night.” Jason answered.
“Okay, let’s go call her.” Ben said.
“I don’t know the area code for Peoria.” said Jason.
“We’ll look it up and you can call while the rest of the people talk to Beau.” Ben said, as he led him to the phone.
They called and I could hear the conversation. Jason explained what had happened and then told about staying with Jeff, Beau and me. He told her about his new friend Davey, but he missed his mommy. “Okay, Uncle Ben wants to talk to you.”
“Hi Ginny, this is Ben Jameson. … I think so. … Okay here he is.”
He handed the phone back to Jason. “Yeah Grandma, when I first saw him last night, he looked so much like my Daddy, except now that I can see him better, he has a few gray hairs, and is a little fatter than Daddy was, but his face looks how I remember Daddy. … Okay, Uncle Ben is right here.”
“Hi Ginny, Well, everything is happening awfully fast and it’s a little complicated. The primary concern now needs to be to find Jason's mother and stepfather. … This is all happening so fast that I don’t know how I feel. …Okay here’s Jason.”
“Yeah Grandma. … Okay, I’ll call you tomorrow night. … Love you.”
Jason hung up and came into the living room and announced, “I’m hungry.”
Mrs. Tillison looked at the clock and said, “Gentlemen, Jason is right. We need to eat. We’re going to be invaded by 20 fifth graders in less than two hours. We’ll make tapes for everyone.”
“Grams, I’ll get Sammy to make the tapes between the two parties and they should be ready at five o’clock.” said Beau.
“Grams, please call Mrs. Madison, and order four cheeseburgers with onion rings and a salad and we’ll get them when we pick up the cakes in ten minutes”. Jeff asked.
We got to the Madisons' and took the cakes to the car and then went back to get the food. Mrs. Madison handed Beau and Jason a cookie and brought our food. Jeff pulled out his wallet but Mrs. Madison held up her hand.
Jeff just laid $25.00 on the counter and we left.
We drove home, and quickly ate our sandwiches and got dressed for the party. Jeff pulled out a duffel bag and stuck his swim suit in it and handed it to the guys to do the same thing. We went downstairs and Jeff pulled some things from the freezer and refrigerator and filled a laundry basket.
We took both cars to the Tillison house. When we got there, we went downstairs and Jeff set up the food table and sent the guys for the five cakes. I was sent for two punch bowls, then the things to fix the punch. Drew, Kenny and Mrs. T. came down and asked what they could do.”
“We need some folding chairs to set up around the pool, if you have any.” Jeff said.
“We borrowed some from the church.” said Drew. “We’ll go get them.” The three of them went up the steps, but two guys came from behind the showers, pushing a cart. “Don’t be so surprised.” said Drew. “We brought them down on the elevator.” The two guys sat the chairs around the pool.
Jeff sent Beau and Jason to get the rest of the things out of the trunk. They came back with paper plates, napkins, spoons, forks and cups. As they were finishing, the families and life guards were arriving.
The life guards were dressing and the rest of rest went upstairs. There was an extra table with a cloth that said Happy Birthday.
Everyone was visiting when Mark and Matt came in. “Ready for the onslaught?” Mark asked.
The first to arrive were Davey and Colin. Davey shouted, “Happy Birthday guys.” He handed them each a puzzle. “These are for the homeless children.”
Mrs. Tillison said, “Guys, put them on that table over there.”
Colin got his camera ready, and the classmates started to arrive, and the first were the Winston twins. They each handed the guys a Barbie doll character. The guys put them on the table. The people kept coming and there were four gifts from everyone, for the four guys. The table was loaded. Colin had the classmates stand behind the table with the four birthday boys, with Chip in front and Mark behind everyone. He took two pictures.
Jeff took over, “Okay people, downstairs and get changed into your swim suits. I want you to get them on and come out and sit down until everyone is ready. Are there any questions?”
Everyone followed the guys downstairs, and when everyone was assembled, Jeff came out in his suit and announced. “Here are the rules. The people in front of you with the red badges are certified life guards. There will be three of them on duty at all times. The thirteen years are responsible for the nine and five year olds.”
“I have set aside an area for the nine and five year olds, and would ask that you stay away from there. There will be absolutely no rough housing, since we have no idea how well everyone can swim. If you hear a whistle and your name that means you are in trouble. The first whistle is a warning, and if you hear two whistles, you are on the wall for five minutes. If you here three whistles, that means you are done for the day. Now, are there any questions?” Jeff said.
“Here’s the first whistle. Now you only have two more chances so have fun.” Jeff said, as he watched everywhere.
The adults all migrated to the pool area, even Aunt Cora and Gigi. They had come down on the elevator.
The young people were having a great time. The 13 year olds were working with the 5 year old and the nine year olds. I was watching Davey and he indeed was taking it easy. All of a sudden, a young girl started floundering in the middle of the pool. Jeff, who had been walking back and forth, dove in as did Kenny and Kim.
Jeff reached her first, and took her to the side and asked. “Are you okay Megan?”
“Yes, I just had a cramp and my feet didn’t want to move.” she answered.
Kim said, “Jeff, I’ll massage her legs and get them going.”
Jeff blew his whistle three times and everyone climbed out. “Okay it is time to take a shower and get dressed. There is a plastic bag on the table for each of you to put your wet suits and gear in. The wet towels go into that big cart in front to the showers. Now, you have exactly ten minutes. Now all people under the age of twelve, move. All people over twelve may swim, if they want, but the same rules apply and there will be one life guard on duty.”
Jeff organized the parents and all stations were manned when the young people started to come. Jeff had set up a special area for the five and nine year olds.
He looked at the clock and everyone exited the pool and went to the showers. When everyone was out, Jeff went and changed. When he came back, he started to take the empty dishes and flat wear to the trash and all the people got up and helped.
At five till four, Jeff took the young people upstairs, and had them sitting on the floor around him. He started to read them, The Golden Eggs and they just sat there enthralled. When he finished, almost all of the parents were there and as the guests left, Spencer and Chip handed each of the young people a thank you bag. After everyone had departed, Jeff handed each of the guys a bag.
To be continued...
Editor's Notes:
It looks like Ben really is Jason's grandfather. We still don't know the complete story of Jason's Mother and Stepfather. I am also somewhat confused as to how Jason got to the Home. He is adorable. I don't live too far away from Peoria. Maybe I should go visit Jason's Grandma. By the way, Peoria's area code is 309 in case it ever comes up. I am really happy with this story, and I know it will continue to be a wonderful story.
