Chapter 27
The Colonoscopy

On Thursday morning, Beau was shaking Jeff.  “Come on boss, get up, you need to get ready.  Uncle Ben is going to be here soon.  Here’s your orange juice.  Doctor Dad, here’s your coffee.  Now move it.”

“Breakfast will be ready when you come down.” Beau said, as he left.

We got up and the clock said 5:30.  We took a quick shower and got dressed for the day.  When we got downstairs and had sat down, Beau handed us a piece of egg casserole with bacon, cheese, onions and green peppers in it with toast and a sweet roll.

Jeff finished eating and went back upstairs to brush his teeth and as he came down, Ben came in and asked, “Everyone ready to go?”

Beau made a stop in the bathroom and Jeff took a book and a pad and pen.  They left at 6:30.  As they were pulling away, Mickey came into the kitchen and said, “I take it Beau and Jeff have already departed.”

“Yep, and breakfast is in the oven.  Make sure that everyone is up.”  I watched Mickey as he left. He dashed up the stairs and came back and got two cups of coffee for his parents and went to their door.  At 7:00 everyone was eating and when they finished they took their dishes and rinsed them and put them in the dishwasher.

“Linda, why don’t you drop Teddy off at his school and then go to the Baxter’s house?”  I handed her a sheet of paper and said, “Beau asked me to give this to you, so that you would know the routine he has been following this week.  I’ll take care of the rest of the dishes.”

I went to work on the dishes and felt like I was being cheated.  I was getting accustomed to the commotion.  I departed for the office and when I walked in, Lash sensed something was wrong.

Lash asked, “Jack, what’s wrong?”

I looked at him and said, “I don’t know if I can ever go back to my old dull life.”

Lash laughed and said, “As long as you have Jeff around, you will probably be barraged by people.  He just attracts people.”

“I guess you are right, but this morning was the first time I was left home by myself in quite a while.” I said, as I put on my smock.

The ride to Omaha had been quiet.  When they got to the Colonoscopy Center, Beau insisted that Jeff stay with him in the prep room.  Jeff stayed close while they gave Beau his medicine.  It wasn’t long before he was out.  They wheeled him into the exam room.  He was gone about 45 minutes and Jeff sat and read and made some notes.  It was almost a half hour before Beau started to move and in about 15 minutes he sat up and said, “I’m ready to go now.”

Jeff motioned for the nurse and said, “He thinks he is ready to leave.”

The nurse laughed and said, “Why don’t you let me get you something to drink?  Would you like a coke or orange juice?”

“Orange juice please.” Beau answered.

The nurse brought his clothes and pulled the curtains.  Beau stood up and started to get dressed, but he was still a little wobbly so Jeff helped him and then helped him get up and sit on the bed.  Jeff pulled the curtain.

The nurse brought Beau the juice and said, “The Doctors are on their way to talk to you, now.”

Ben and the examining specialist came in.  Ben said, “You have some internal damage, but we both feel that surgery could be risky.  You will need to let Doctor Dad know if you have any bleeding or problems with your bowels.  Make sure that you do what he tells you to do.”

“Now you may leave.” the specialist laughed.

When they got to the car, Beau slept most of the way home.  They dropped Beau off at the Baxter house, and made sure he got in okay.  He took his shoes off and went to find Linda and Chip.  They were making cupcakes for Bobby’s and Toby’s birthdays.

Beau went to see Gigi and they talked for a few minutes and then Beau said, “I think I’ll lie down for a while.”  He put a sheet on the sofa and lay down.

Jeff checked with Linda, “Mother, is everything okay?”

Linda laughed and said, “Son, with the directions that Beau left me, a monkey couldn’t go wrong.”  I’m going to stay around until the 10-11 year olds go into the study mode.  I think Chris and Mickey have piano lessons this afternoon, so I’ll try to come up with something for dinner.”

Jeff and Ben left, and Jeff picked up his car and drove to the home.  He arrived at 11:00 and visited with Josh for a few minutes, and then made an all call for the residents, their mentors and Dr. O’Connor to report to the dining room.

As everyone came in, he handed them a packet of music.  He had them line up and said, “You too Dr. O’Connor.”

Jeff picked up his guitar and played and sang the first verse of The Sound of Music and then had everyone sing with him.  When they finished, Jeff did some rearranging of the singers.  Then they sang Edelweiss.  Josh and some of the other staff members came in and applauded when they finished.

Jeff looked at the clock and said, “We have time for one more song” and they sang Do Ra Me from the Sound of Music.  When they finished Jeff said, “You people sounded great, but we need to get back to school now.”

“Are you coming back again next week, Jeff?” asked a young man.

“Try and keep me away.  Thanks for asking, Scott.”  Jeff said as he packed his guitar.

He drove to the Baxter house and Beau was still sleeping and his mother, Gigi and Chip were having soup and a sandwich.  “Is everything okay?” he asked.

“Beau is still asleep.” Linda said.

“Let him sleep, but expect a human dynamo when he wakes.  Now Gigi, how are you doing?”

“I’m a little tired, but okay otherwise but moving around is getting easier.” she answered.

Jeff said, “I have to go.  See you all later.”  He turned to Chip and said, “Make sure you give these to Bobby and Toby when they are eating their birthday cupcakes.”

Jeff went to his class and job and drove home and was starting dinner when Chris and Mickey came in.  Jeff could tell that they were upset. “Okay guys, spill, what’s wrong?”

Mickey started, “We were coming here for the piano lesson and this creep pulls up in a souped up jalopy and said, ‘Hey Mr. Hero.  I have something here for you.’   He rubbed his crotch.  Chris said, ‘I guess you have a pencil in there right?’”

“The creep started to sputter and, ‘Just wait you two, I’ll show you.’ as he started to undo his pants.  We took off and ran here.” Chris said.

“Roger used to be a nice guy, but it was like when he turned 16 and he got that 1957 Chevy, he became too good for anyone.”  Chris added.

“Where does this creep live, and what's his name?” asked Jeff.

“He lives around the block, and his name is Roger Fowler.” Chris answered.

“Okay guys, let’s go.” Jeff said.  “Lead us to the Fowler house, Chris.”

They walked around the block and Chris pointed to the house. Jeff said, “I want you guys to stand so whoever answers the door can’t see you.”   Jeff rang the doorbell.

A young man answered, “What do you want?”

Jeff said, “I’m Jeff Wilson and I understand that you have something you’re really proud of.  Can we come in, and perhaps you can show it to us?”

“Sure.”  Roger answered.  “The garage is this way.”

“I wasn’t referring to your hot rod jalopy.  I was referring to what you have between your legs.” Jeff said.

Roger turned and when he saw who was with Jeff, he went limp.

“Okay, we want to see it now, and if you don’t voluntarily show it to us, we’ll undress you ourselves.”  The three guys started toward him.

Roger said, “Here, if you want to see it so bad, here it is.”  He dropped his jeans and briefs.

Jeff started to laugh, “Guys, we need to show him what real men have.”

Jeff pulled down his pants and briefs and the other two followed his lead.  Roger stood there blushing.  The guys pulled their clothes back on and then Roger got dressed.

Jeff didn’t let up.  “Now, let’s see this wonderful hot rod of yours.”

Roger led them to the garage.  Jeff looked at the car and started to laugh.

“This car looks like it was painted with finger nail polish and those wheels weren’t even around when this car was built and the upholstery looks like it came out of a designer car.  We have to go, but I suggest you get a life.  Oh by the way, if I ever hear of you doing anything like this again, I will report you to the police.  Come on guys, let’s get going.”

They arrived back at the house and Chris started his lesson.  I arrived with Beau and Teddy.  The doorbell rang and Ben and Josh were standing there with a lady I didn’t know.

“Hi Jack.  I hope you got my message.” said Josh.  “Are Jeff and Beau here?”

Beau is in the kitchen and Jeff is giving a piano lesson.” I answered.

We walked into the living room, and Beau came in and said, “Hi Uncle Ben and Uncle Josh, who is the beautiful lady?”

“This is Mrs. Rose from the Child’s Service System.”  Josh said.

Jeff and Chris came out of the piano room and Jeff said, “Good lesson, Chris; remember you have to feel what you are playing.”

Chris answered, “I hope that I can do that.  Oh hi Mrs. Rose, what are you doing here?  Are you going to help Beau stay here?  I have to go now, or I’ll be late for dinner.  See you guys after dinner.”

Beau said, “Excuse me, I need to go to the bathroom, I’ll be right back.”  He went up the stairs and came back shortly.

Beau sat down by Mrs. Rose and asked, “Mrs. Rose, Are you here to see if Doctor Dad and Jeff would provide me a suitable home?”

“As a matter of fact, that’s exactly why I’m here.  How do you feel here?” Mrs. Rose asked.

Beau started, “Since I’ve been here this week, I have come to feel the safest and most loved that I have felt since my mother died when I was 10.  Now why don’t I show you what Doctor Dad did to make me feel welcomed and loved.”

He led her upstairs with Jeff and walked into his bedroom.  “Look at this bed.”  He pulled it out into a queen size bed.  He closed it back up and pointed to the computer.  Doctor Dad has so many blocks on the computer that I have a hard time even finding the Disney channel.”

He looked back at his bed and said, “I guess I forgot to put my pajamas away because we left so early this morning for my colonoscopy.  Let me show you Doctor Dad’s room.”

They walked through and my pajamas were on the pillow.  “Now let me show you my bathroom.”  Mrs. Rose looked around. Beau took her into the hallway and pointed to Sammy’s room and said, “That's the older teenager’s room.  When I saw it last Saturday, it looked like a pigpen.”

He then took her to Teddy and Mickey’s room where the door was open and she looked in and Beau said, “Just notice how clean and neat that room looks.”

“Now, let’s go to the basement so you can see what Doctor Dad is having done for us.”  They went down and he pointed out the weight room and the game room. “We’re probably going to have a lot of parties down here.”  Beau finally ran down.

The three of them came back to the living room.  Beau said, “I have to eat please.”

Jeff led us to the kitchen where Sammy was finishing the dishes.  He told us, “Your dinner is in the oven.”

Jeff pulled the casserole out, and held up six fingers.  Beau knew what he was saying and he set the kitchen table for six.  Jeff served the casserole and Beau put out the salad and brought the hot biscuits.  Jeff and Beau brought the drinks.  When everyone was eating, Mrs. Rose asked, “Beau, you don’t really wear pajamas to bed do you?”

Beau shook his head no.

Mrs. Rose looked at me and asked, “How long has it been since you wore pajamas to bed Doctor Wilson?”

Without knowing what was going on or thinking, I answered, “I guess I was about ten when I stopped wearing them.  I only wear them now if there might be a lady around.”

“Thank you. Now Beau, what else did you forget to tell me?” Mrs. Rose asked.

“You mean that Doctor Dad and Jeff sleep in the same bed?”  Beau stopped and put his head down.  Jeff went to him and Beau said, “Please don’t take me away.”

Before anyone else could say anything, Drew, Kenny and Aunt Cora came in with Mrs. T.

Drew started right in, “Guess what Jeff, I got fired by Mrs. Tice, Coach Winston and Mr. Murphy.  They told me to get out of their hair and they all gave me an A.”

Drew stopped and Kenny looked around and said, “Hi. Mrs. Rose, what are you doing here?”

“Hi Kenny, you know these people, I assume.  What do you think of them?  Are they good people?”

“Yep, they’re the best.” said Kenny.

“Hi Gloria, I see you’ve met my friends, Jack, Jeff and Beau.” Mrs. T. said.

“Hi Mrs. Tillison, what are you doing here?” asked Mrs. Rose.

“I came to tell Jeff and Beau that we got the paperwork authorizing Beau and Denny Johnson to be home schooled.  Guess what, Beau.  Maria Johnson is a trained physical therapist, and will be working with Gigi starting on Monday.”  Mrs. T. said, as we were interrupted by a young voice.

“Uncle Jeff and Doctor Dad, are Eddie, Timmy and Danny here yet?”  Chip asked, as he climbed up on Jeff’s lap.  The doorbell rang the other three five year olds came in with their fathers.

The four five year olds disappeared and the door opened again and in came Denny and his parents. “Beau, what did your test show?” Denny asked.

“I don’t have to have an operation.  I just have to do what Doctor Dad tells me to do.”  Beau answered.

Denny hugged Beau and then realized who was there, “Hi, Mrs. Rose, and Gram.”

Mrs. Rose said, “I’ll be back tomorrow night with the papers authorizing Doctor Wilson to be a foster parent, and the guardian of Beau.  I am just amazed at what I have seen in this house tonight.”

“Oh, this is quiet.  Last Saturday night there were about 50 people here for a formal dinner.” said Mrs. T. “Oh, by the way, we’re having a small birthday party at my house on Saturday.  It is a surprise party so don’t say anything.  You will know a lot of people there, and don’t worry about gifts.”

Beau went and hugged Mrs. Rose.  “Thank you ma’am for helping me stay here.”  He gave her a kiss on the cheek.

Mrs. Rose left as did everyone else except the four five year olds and the work crew.  Beau and Jeff did the dishes and had just sat down when the five year olds came down and asked if they could have some more hot chocolate and cookies.  Jeff and Beau took them to the kitchen and took care of them.

At 8:30, the parents picked the five year olds up and the work crew left at nine, saying they were finished and that Kenny and Drew would do the touch ups tomorrow.

We were all bushed, I locked up and we went upstairs and took quick showers and crawled into bed and I think we all just went out.  It had been a long day.
