Chapter 25
Birthday Pancakes

About four o’clock in the morning, I felt a little body crawling over me saying, “I got to go to the bathroom really bad.”  I took Chip into the bathroom and when he finished, I made him wash his hands and brush his teeth.

When he came out, he took off all his clothes except his briefs and was crawling into bed when I came out after relieving my bladder.  When I crawled into bed Chip just pushed back into me.  It wasn’t ten minutes later when Teddy was crawling over me saying, “I need to go to the bathroom.”

He went into the hall and came back.  He had obviously brushed his teeth too.  He shed his clothes and when he crawled in Chip was back in the middle and everyone was out again.

At 6:30, I was being hugged by a monster telling me that it was time to get up.  “Here’s your coffee.” Jeff said.  “Now you and your two buddies get ready to roll.”

He started to tickle Teddy and Chip.  Teddy said, “Get away from me you monster.  Come on Chip; let’s go take a shower in the hall.”  They left; I went into the shower.

I was coming out, drying my hair when Mickey came into the room drying his hair.  “Those two clowns just came and stepped into the shower with me. Is there nowhere in the house where a person can have any privacy?”

I looked at him and said, “I guess not.” as I started to get dressed.

He looked at me and said, “I’m as guilty as Teddy and Chip, I guess.”  He wrapped his towel around himself and left.  Chip came in and started to dress.

We went downstairs and Beau and Jeff had everything ready.  When everyone was seated, they served us a plate of pancakes and sausages.  Chip was watching when Beau came and brought him a plate with two pancakes with five lit candles.  Jeff started to sing Happy Birthday and everyone joined in.

Chip clapped his hands and said, “This is the first time I have ever had birthday pancakes.”  He blew out his candles and cleared his plate and said, “Thank you, everyone.”

Everyone started to help with the dishes, even Chip.

Jeff took Beau into the piano room and told us to sign the five cards.  We did as we were told and then he put some bills into two of them and said, “Beau today is also Spencer’s birthday, so maybe you and Chip could make birthday cake for him.  He handed two of the cards to Beau and said, “Give these to the guys during snack time.”

As Jeff was leaving, he made sure Beau had his medicine and reminded him, “No food after 3:00 and then start drinking the medicine at 4:00.”  Jeff walked in with Chip and Beau, at Gigi’s house.

Jeff said, “Gigi, I’ll pick Beau up about 5:15.  How are you getting to your appointment?”

“Kevin has the afternoon off, and we are taking Jane’s van.” she answered.

Jeff looked at Beau and Chip and said, “I know you two will be good while she’s gone.”

Beau looked at him and said, “Get real.  Her appointment is during our rest period.  Now move on frog.”

Jeff left and the guys started their schedule.  They made a cake and decorated it and put eleven candles on it and hid it.

At the middle school, during English, Denny and Mickey were by busy working on an assignment when the P. A.  System came on.  “This is the principle.  I would like to recognize one of our students whose fast thinking saved a young man’s life.  Mr. Michael Smith, in our eighth grade, is featured on the front page of the Fremont Times.  Congratulations Mickey.  The article will be posted on the bulletin board in front of the cafeteria.”

When the bell rang, Mickey said, “I’m not going to eat.  I’m so embarrassed.”

Denny said, “Forget that thought.  Let’s go, I’m starved.  They didn’t stop at the bulletin board, but went directly to the serving line.  When Mickey turned to go join Chris, everyone in the cafeteria applauded.

Mickey just about lost it, but Denny said, “Wave your hand to acknowledge them.”  Mickey did so, and sat down with Georgia and Chris and some of Georgia’s friends.

“I’m so embarrassed.” Mickey said.

“Don’t be embarrassed Mighty Mick.”  Chris said.

People kept stopping to congratulate Mickey.  The rest of the day was full of the same.  On the way home, Mickey announced, “I hope everyone forgets about this by tomorrow.”

During lunch, Kevin came in and Beau lit into him.  “You’re late.  Your sandwich is in a bag.  Now please eat and get Gigi to her appointment on time.”

Kevin did as he was told, and Beau and Chip did the dishes and went into the rest mode.

At three o’clock, they got the kitchen ready for the invasion.  They laid out new pieces of paper with each guy’s name on it along one side and on the other they had a place their shoes and made a place for any visitors shoes..

The four 10/11 year olds came in and Chip was standing there.  They took their shoes off and Chip pointed to the bathroom.  They went and washed their hands and descended on the kitchen.  As they went into the kitchen, Beau measured their heads and recorded it.

“What are you doing?” asked Bobby.

“I’m making a growth chart.”  Beau announced and said, “ Please sit down or I’ll take some other measurements also.  There were five glasses of milk and on the table.”  Beau and Chip came in carrying a cake with eleven candles and then Chip started to sing Happy Birthday.

After Spencer had blown out his candles and the cake was served, Beau handed Chip and Spencer each an envelope and said, “Happy Birthday.”

The guys opened the cards and Chip looked at his and asked, “Who is it from?”

Spencer patiently showed Chip the words, Doctor Dad, Beau and Jeff.  He read the card to Chip and then said, “We each got $15.00?”

“What do I need money for?” asked Chip.

Beau said, “You can put it in the bank, and it will make more money.”

Gigi and Kevin came in and Beau went to meet them.  Gigi had her cast off but she was walking on crutches.  Beau asked, “Okay, what did the surgeon say?”

“He said I need to exercise my legs, and should get a walker and see a physical therapist, but I can’t afford that.”

Beau thought for a minute and asked, “Kevin, your computer chair rolls doesn’t it?”

Kevin nodded yes and Beau ordered, “Please go get it now!”

Kevin got the chair.  When he came back, Beau pulled it to Gigi and said, “Put you hands here and push very slowly.  The three of them walked into the kitchen as the guys were finishing their cake.

When they saw Gigi with the chair, they all yelled, “You got your cast off.”

Beau brought Gigi and Kevin a piece of cake as Spencer and Kevin helped her to sit down.  Beau looked at the clock and said, “I have to start drinking this awful stuff, now.  How much homework do you guys have?”

Spencer answered, “We have spelling, math, and we have to write a paper about the bossiest person we know.”

“I guess Beau is going to have a lot of words written about him then.” Kevin laughed.

“Actually, we talked about it on the way home, and we decided it would be better if we each wrote about someone different.  We each picked a different person.” Teddy answered.

Bobby said, “I’m going to write about Mr. Bressler, Toby is going to write about his Grams, Teddy took Jeff, and poor Spencer got stuck with Beau.”

Gigi laughed and said, “You guys are too much.  Now, I’m going to rest for 45 minutes.”

Beau and Kevin helped her to her recliner. Beau dimmed the lights and closed the door.  As he and Kevin were walking to the kitchen, Beau said, “Kevin, this might be a good time for you to do some grocery shopping.”

Kevin said, “That’s a good idea.  I’ll get my checkbook and be right back.  Is there a list?”

“Yep, but let me check with Spencer and see what he thinks you might need.  He stopped and checked the guys shoe sizes and wrote them down.  He went and tapped Spencer on the shoulder and whispered what was happening.  Spencer started to check the refrigerator and freezer and stopped writing.

Spencer turned and whispered, “I’ll go with Kevin, and that way we’ll get what we need and I can decide on the menus while we are there.  I’ll do my homework tonight, while the guys are at Jeff’s house. I don’t want Gigi to be alone.”

“Good thinking.” said Beau. “Teddy, you sit and help Chip if he needs help.  I’m going to start dinner for the guys and Gigi.

Beau went to the phone in the hall and dialed.  A voice answered and Beau asked, “What are you doing there?  I thought you were taking Denny to the home to be tested.” Beau asked.

“I delivered him, and I am going to pick him up at five.  I had some things to discuss with Grams, so I figured I might as well do it now, instead of just sitting around.” Jeff answered.

“Okay, but let me talk to Grams, please.”  Beau asked.

“Beau, to what do I owe this pleasure?” asked Mrs. T.

“Gigi got her cast off, and the surgeon said she should use a walker and that she should have physical therapy.  She says she can’t afford them.  Can you think of any way to help her?” Beau asked.

“Beau, thank you for letting me know; let me make a call.  I think I can take care of the walker.  Then I’ll have to think about the physical therapy.” Grams answered.

Mrs. T. called the church and said, “This is Aggie.  Is the walker available? …   Good, we’ll be right there. …  Let’s roll, Jeff.”

They went to the church and picked up the walker.  They then drove to the home and picked Denny up. Josh handed the preliminary results to Jeff and said, “I’ll see you tonight.”

They delivered Denny to his house, and Jeff said, “See you tonight Superman.” as Denny climbed out of the car.

Jeff and Mrs. T. drove to Gigi’s house and Jeff carried the walker into the house.  Spencer and Beau were bringing in the groceries and Beau was putting them away.  When he saw Jeff and Grams with the walker, he stopped and took them to Gigi, who was busy sewing.”

“Gigi, you have some visitors.” Beau announced.

Jeff and Grams walked in with the walker.  “Your need is fulfilled.” said Jeff, as he opened the walker.

Gigi looked at them and asked, “How did you know?”

“Beau called me and told me what you needed, and we borrowed it from the church.” Grams answered.

“That young man sure didn’t waste any time.  Thank you.” Gigi said with tears in her eyes.

They helped her up, and Jeff adjusted the walker for Gigi.   She slowly maneuvered into the kitchen.  Beau looked at her and said, “One half of the doctor’s orders completed.  I have to go to the bathroom.” He took off.

When he came back he said, “Jeff, I think you should take me home, now.”  He grabbed his bottle of liquid and his backpack.  Jeff left Beau off first and then delivered Mrs. Tillison.

When Jeff came back, Linda announced, “Dinner is ready.”

Beau said, “I’ll go read, since I can’t eat anything.”  Beau went upstairs and came flying back down.  “What happened?  Why is my bed back in Doctor Dad’s bedroom?”

“What are you talking about?” Jeff asked.

Beau looked at the food and said, “As soon as you finish eating, come see.”

Editor's Notes:

Hey I remember having to drink that nasty liquid so they can take pictures of my insides. That stuff is really awful.  If you know what Milk of Magnesia is like, then just imagine that wonderful taste, combined with caster oil and canned spinach. Now put that in a blender add a can of motor oil, and mix it  thoroughly, now blend in a cup of sawdust. Now that would be delicious, compared to what that nasty stuff you have to drink for X-Rays tastes like.
