Chapter 5

The Week Continues

At 6:10 Jeff woke me, “Time to get up, Dad.”  He was already dressed, ready for school.  He gathered the dirty linens and was taking them down stairs.  As he was walking through the kitchen, Spencer looked at him and said, “Oh no, not again.”

Jeff put the sheets in the washing machine and came back to help Spencer.   He had no idea what was being cooked so he set the table and put on the juice.  “Jeff, why was Tyler wearing a pair of your boxer shorts when I woke up?  I rather like them though because there was snake sticking out of the fly.  I guess I’ll have to remember to buy him some boxer shorts.”

“Spencer, what are you saying?” Tyler asked as he entered the room.

“I knew you and Doctor Dad were standing there so I couldn’t resist pulling your worm.  Now go tell the others to get their bottoms here if they want to eat.  Jeff, put on the catsup, please?” Spencer asked.

Spencer pulled some biscuits out of the oven just as everyone arrived.  “Jeff cut the biscuits in half and put two biscuits on each plate and Tyler you serve everyone.”

We had country style creamed sausage on biscuits with homemade home fries.  Everyone dug in.  Out of the clear blue, Jeff asked, “Who’s going to top this tomorrow morning?  I’m still on strike in the mornings.”

Tyler answered, “It’s going to be hard, but I’ll try.”

Everyone got up and started to clear the table.  Jeff sent Spencer to get ready for school and at 7:30 everyone was leaving.  I was the last to leave.  I made sure all of the lights and appliances were off and found everything in perfect order.

Jeff dropped Teddy and Spencer off, and went to his first class.  When he walked in, a young woman was writing on the board.  She wrote Senora Carmen Cortez.  At precisely 8:00, she started to speak to the class in Spanish.

A young woman in the front raised her hand and said. “Ma’am, I have no idea what you just said.  I thought this was to be an introductory course in conversational Spanish.”

“My dear senorita, it is.  Thank you for reminding me.  Now, I would like everyone to provide this information.

1.    Name

2.    Status in college

3.    Knowledge of languages

4.    Reason for taking this course.

When it was Jeff’s turn, he stood and said, “I am Jeff Wilson, and this is my second day in college.  I have studied English forever, have 3 years of Latin. 2 years of French and a semester of German.  I’m here to learn Spanish, because it is fast becoming the second language in the United States.”

Senora Cortez looked at Jeff and said, “Why do I get the feeling that you have more going than what you just told us?”

The class started; the students were getting into the material.  Just as class was about to be over, Senora Cortez asked, “Senor Wilson, may I speak to you for a minute?”

Jeff went up to her podium and she said, “I just realized who you are.  You’re the young man that is not afraid to challenge the instructor if you think something is wrong.  I trust you’ll let me know if I do something that is not appropriate.”

“Senora, I think the two of us will get along just fine.”  Jeff laughed.

Jeff went to his next class.  When everyone settled down, the instructor said, “I am Dr. Rog O’Connor.  I would like for you to call me Rog or Dr. O. In this class there is no text and there will be no formal tests.  You can’t learn about counseling from a book or by taking tests.  Instead you will be graded on how well you accomplish your practicum and document your efforts, and by how you share in the class.”

“We will be meeting as a class only on Tuesdays and on Thursdays we will be going to the home, for you to work with your case study.  For the rest of today, I would like to assign your cases to save time on Thursday.  It should only take about 3 minutes each.  Who would like to go first?” Dr. O. asked.

Jeff spoke and said, “Sir, I would like to go first.  I need to leave and take care of something before my 1:00 class.”

“You are who?” Dr. O asked.

“I’m Jeff Wilson, sir.”  Jeff answered.

“How would you feel about working with a young person who tried to commit suicide?” Dr. O. asked.

“I would make every effort to find out what would cause someone to try that.  Is this person male or female?” Jeff asked.

“Mr. Custer is a young 13 year old male.”  Dr. O. answered.

“That’s my person, sir.” Jeff said, as he got up to leave.

Someone spoke up from the back and asked, “Dr. O’Connor, are all of the cases going to be like this?”

Dr. O. thought for a minute and said, “Everyone will have a young person with their own issues.  There are no two cases that are ever exactly the same.  I must admit that Mr. Wilson’s case may be one of the most difficult though.”

“Okay Jeff, we’ll meet here on Thursday and car pool to the home where you will meet your person.”  Dr. O. said.

Jeff went to the Target store and picked up a size six parka, a pair of warm gloves, and a ski hat.  He then went to the electronics department and picked out two hand held games appropriate for a five or six year olds.  He also picked up lots of batteries.  After he paid the bill, he drove to the trailer court.

He knocked on the Weaver’s trailer door.  Jill answered and Jeff asked, “Is the Cub here, Mrs. Weaver?  I have something for him.”

Jill invited Jeff in and said, “We were just having a grilled cheese sandwich with some tomato soup.  Can I fix you some?”

Jeff said, “I’ll just have a cup of soup and some crackers.”

When Chip saw Jeff, he jumped out of his chair and said, “Uncle Jeff, this is so good.”

“Okay, let’s eat all of our food and then I have something for you.”  Jeff said.

Everyone finished their food and Jeff took Jill and Chip to the living room.  He pulled out the parka, hat and gloves and said, “Would you try them on please.”

Chip tried them on and said, “They are sure warm but they’re so heavy.”

“Oh, I forgot to tell you to take the things out of the pockets.” Jeff said.

Chip took off his gloves and pulled the games and the batteries out of the pockets.  What are these?

Jeff looked at the clock and said, “Cub, they are games, but I have to go.  Maybe you and your mother can work on them for a little while, before you rest.  Jill, I hope Reg told you about the dinner on Saturday.”

“He told me but I don’t have any dress clothes and we can’t afford a babysitter for Chip.” Jeff said.

“I’ll tell everyone that the dress is informal, and Cub needs to be there.” Jeff said.

“Cub, give me a big hug to get me through the afternoon.  You tell your Daddy, I’ll pick you up for dinner, so you can eat with the Tiger.  Your Daddy is going to be working tonight, so you need to make sure that you and your Mommy both rest before she goes to work.”

Jeff left and went to Dr. Anne Campbell’s office and asked, “What am I doing this afternoon?”

“Why don’t you do something similar to what you did yesterday, but narrow the focus to modern music.”  Anne said.  “None of these people will ever have had contact with you before.”

“Okay, I’ll try to get them involved.” Jeff said, as they left for the classroom.

The class went really well and Jeff took off for the Administration Building.

When he walked in, Mitzi said, Jeff, President Campbell would like to talk to you.  He is waiting.”

Jeff knocked and entered when told to do so.  “Jeff, I trust your classes today went better than yesterday.  I called Carmen and Rog and they said they didn’t have any problems.  They are both really impressed with you.”

Jeff looked at him and said, “Sir, they both treated the students like they really cared and Dr. O’Connor is going to have us helping some homeless young people which I think is probably one the best learning experiences we could wish for.”

“I am glad that things went better for you today.” President Campbell said.

“Sir, I would like for you and your wife to come to a small dinner party on Saturday night at 6:00.  The dress is casual, something more than briefs and a tee shirt.  Bobby and Kim are invited too.” Jeff said.

“Jeff, I’ll check with Anne and Bobby and let you know tomorrow.” the President assured him.

Jeff went to his office and there were two messages on his desk.  The first said that his interview would appear in the morning paper.  It was from Tricia.  The second was from Adam saying he might be a little late since Aaron has a 3:00 class.

Jeff looked around and decided to call it quits for the day.  He went out to Mitzi and said, “I’m leaving, since I don’t have any visitors.  I’ll be at home if something comes up.”

Jeff went home and started to fix dinner which was going to be beef stroganoff.  He called Mrs. T. and asked who she had contacted.  She said, “Jane and Hank, Greg and Anita and that she and Cora would be there, but Drew and Kenny had already promised to go the Hendrix house for a birthday party.  Oh, by the way, Josh and Ben are going to be here, so I invited them.”

“That’s great; I need to talk to them anyway.  I’ll see you at 5:30.”  Jeff said as he hung up.

Adam and Aaron arrived.  Jeff took them to the piano room and Aaron started to read as Jeff and Adam played a couple of songs.  Jeff looked at Adam and said, “Now, what would you like me to help you learn?”

“I just want to be able to play with as much emotion as you do.” Adam answered.

“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow in any case.  Aaron, you need to take care of twinkle fingers here.  He is really good.”  Jeff said, as he started to escort them out.  He added, “Oh by the way guys, Dad and I are having a small dinner party on Saturday.  I hope you guys can come?” Jeff said

The lesson was finished and the guys left.  Jeff quickly made a fruit salad so that everything would be almost ready when he got home.  He went to the Tillison house and was in place when everyone else arrived.  He handed everyone a copy of the test.  Since he had made up the test, he didn’t take it.  As people finished, Jeff took them and graded them.

“Everyone got a 95% or higher.  Dad, tomorrow I want you to pick Andrew and Kenneth up at school and take them for their driver’s test.  Now guys, which car would you like to use?” Jeff asked.

“Doctor Dad, could we use the Camry, so the officer doesn’t think we are some rich punks?” Drew asked.

“Of course, I‘ll pick you up at 1:00.  Be in the office, please.  I’ll get you back to school as soon as possible, after you are finished.”

Jeff said, “I’ll meet everyone at the house if you are eating dinner there.  Who is joining us?”

The only two who responded in the affirmative were Tyler and I.  Jeff left and drove by the trailer park and picked up Reg and Chip.

They arrived and he turned the guys over to Tyler and Spencer and he finished dinner.  Jeff announced that dinner was ready.  Tyler, Spencer and Mickey helped put the plates in front of everyone.  Chip approached the food very cautiously, but he watched everyone else shoveling the food in and he did the same.  No one had anything left.

When everyone had finished, Jeff said, “Tyler, take Reg with you so he can be there when Billy gets there.  Reg is going to be Billy’s helper.  Tell Kevin, Matt and Mark to move your bedroom furniture to the room next to Kevin’s while you start on the doors.  Some of us will be there shortly to help as needed.”

Reg and Tyler left, and everyone started to help with the dishes.  Spencer made sure that Chip got all of the silverware and had him hand it to Mickey who was loading the dishwasher.

When the dishes were finished, Jeff said, “Who is going to the Baxter house to help?”

“I’ll go.” said Spencer.

“Me too.” Chip added.

“I can go tonight.” said Mickey.

“Okay, let’s roll.” Jeff laughed.

They got to the Baxter house and people were working.  Spencer and Chip became the trash haulers for the construction crew and Mickey and Jeff helped the movers.  Jeff fixed Tyler’s room with his new linens.  When Spencer saw the bedroom he said, “Wow this is great.”

Tyler finished cutting the second doorway opening and said, “I’ll do the framing tomorrow.  I’m getting tired.”

Everyone went downstairs and Jeff announced, “Okay everyone, time to finish for tonight.  I have some very tired young people here.”

Billy said, “Reg and I got more accomplished tonight than I even thought possible.”  The two guys cleaned what little mess they had made.

Jeff took Reg, Chip, Spencer and Mickey and said, “See you all tomorrow night at 7:00.

Spencer said, “Tyler, don’t play around too long or I’ll start to worry.”

The guys dropped Reg and Chip off at the trailer and then arrived back at the house, and they all got ready for bed.  Tyler came in and said, “Doctor Dad, I think I would like to do something with Kevin, like you and Jeff did last night.”

“Tyler, believe me, it is going to hurt really awful, when do it for the first time.  Jeff really prepared himself well to be able to do what he did last night.  Just go slow, and do only what you both feel comfortable doing.” I answered.

We locked up and went to our own bedrooms.

 To be continued...

Feedback always welcome:

Editor's notes:

Well, it looks as though Tyler wants to make love to Kevin. They both care a lot about each other, and hopefully things will work out nicely.

Jeff seems to have done better at school today.  I hope things will go well for him at school since he will be back with some of his less than satisfactory teachers.
