Chapter 3

An Evening of Training

Jeff and Spencer arrived at the trailer park, and went to the trailer door and were met by Chip.  “Hi Cub, is your Daddy here?” Jeff asked.

“Yes, he’s sitting at the table, looking at some pieces of paper.” Chip said.

“Cub, would you take the Tiger here and teach him how to use these toys?”  Jeff asked.

Chip led Spencer to his bedroom and they started to play with the toys Jeff had bought.  Jeff sat down next to Reg and said, “Now, I want to know what your problems are.”

Reg looked at him and said, “I am going to have to drop out of college.  We can’t make enough to keep us alive if I don’t.  Jill had a good job, but the cost of daycare was eating us up, and she didn’t have a family health plan.  We had some major car repair expenses and between the two of us working part time, we are barely surviving.  You think I want to spend the rest of my life in a trailer park?”

“What about your and Jill’s parents?” Jeff asked.

“They disowned us when Jill got pregnant.  Both sets of parents belonged to an ultra conservative religious group and they wouln’t even acknowledge us or Chipper.”

“Reg, why don’t you go see that the boys are okay, and bring back a blank piece of paper and a pen?”  Jeff said.

Reg left and Jeff quickly looked through the cabinets, refrigerator and the freezer and as he guessed, there was almost no food.  When Reg came back he handed the paper and pen to Jeff.  Jeff handed it back to him and called Tiger to come.

Spencer and Chip came quickly and Jeff whispered something into Spencer’s ear.  Spencer took Chip and they started to look in all the cabinets and the refrigerator,

While they were doing that Jeff said, “Okay Reg, write.  I, Regis Weaver, hereby agree to pay Jeff Wilson the sum of $500.00 after the Cub and his brothers and sisters are finished with their higher education, whether it is at a university or trade school.”

“Jeff, Chip is going to be our one and only, because Jill had problems during Chip’s delivery, and there will be no more little Weavers.”  Reg said.

“Then we will just have to make sure he receives only the best attention, won’t we?  Tiger, come here and watch while Uncle Reg signs this, please.” Jeff said.

Spencer and Chip came over and Jeff said, “Sign this now please, while Spencer is watching, and date it.”

Reg did as he was told, and Jeff took the paper and wrote witnessed by the paper and handed it Spencer and said, “Sign here, Tiger.”

Spencer picked the piece of paper up and read it then he asked, “What $500.00?”

Jeff handed Spencer an envelope and said, “Here it is, Tiger.”

Spencer looked in the envelope and said, “Cub, come and help me make sure how that there is $500.00 here.”

He counted out five $20.00 bills and put them in a pile.  He turned to Chip and said, “Let’s make sure there are five piece of paper in the pile.”  They counted it together and then they counted out four more piles and then they counted the five piles.  “Now do I give the money to Uncle Reg?” Spencer asked as he signed the paper.

“Yep Tiger, now everyone get their jackets on.” Jeff said.

“Where are we going?” Chip asked.

“I don’t know.” Spencer answered.

The four guys climbed into the car and went to the Tillison house.  Everyone was waiting with Kevin and Mark, but Jeff didn’t let that stop him.  He brought the guys in and introduced them and then turned and flipped the keys to Reg and said, “Tiger, you take the two gentlemen to the grocery store, and make sure they get enough food to eat healthy for six days, and make sure you don’t let them buy too much junk food.”

The three of them left and the rest went to the computer room and started reviewing the sites that everyone had found.  Even Mark and Kevin had sites.  Everyone shared one and Jeff said, “Ladies and Gentlemen, we need to stop.  If everyone shares another one, we will never eat.  Why doesn’t everyone give me their sites, and I will compile a list and we can all review them?”

Before Jeff could finish, Drew asked, “Mr. Baldwin, could Kenny and I do this for our project in computer science, and make an annotated bibliography for everyone and then you and Mr. Bressler could use it for your next driver’s education class?”

Matt said, “I think that would be a great project, but I would like to see at least forty sites since the two of you are going to be working on the project together.”

Before anyone could say anything, the three guys came back and Reg said, “I’m not sure I can stand another shopping trip with this perfectionist.  He read every label before we could buy anything.”

Jeff handed out the driver’s manuals and said, “Okay people, tomorrow night is the test. Depending on the results, it should be the last night.  Now has anyone had a chance to prepare anything for dinner?  I know I haven’t.  Tiger, did you prepare anything for Gigi?”

“No, when did I have time?  You drug me away and I didn’t even get my homework done which is still at Gigi’s” Spencer answered.

“Drew, did you fix anything for dinner?”  Jeff asked.

“Yes, Kenny and I fixed a casserole, but I don’t smell it.” Drew said.

“Heaven sakes alive, I forgot to put it in the oven because I was busy doing something else.”  Mrs. T. smiled.

“Okay, here’s what we’ll do.  Dad, you order pizza for 17 and everyone will meet at our house in half and hour.  I’ll call Sammy and the guys and have them set the table and make a salad.  Dad, you and Tyler switch vehicles so he can bring Gigi.  Spencer and I will need to take Mr. Reg and the Cub home and help them with the groceries.  Ying and Yang do what you got to do, but be at the house at 6:30 since Bullet Man and Joni are going to be at Gigi’s house at 7:30.”  Jeff stopped to breathe.

“Jeff, I’ll order the pizzas and the guys and Cora and I will pick them up.  For heaven’s sake, stop trying to solve all the problems in the world.  Now everyone heard the boss.  Let’s move.”  Mrs. T. said.

Everyone left.  Jeff and Spencer took the Weavers home and helped put the food away.  Jeff whispered to Spencer, “Tiger, you did a good job.  Okay men let’s go get some pizza.”

“Daddy, will I like pisa?   I don’t know what it is.”  Chipper asked.

“Come on Cub.  Almost everyone likes pizza once in a while.  It is really good for you because it has almost all the necessary food groups to make you big and strong.  If we have a big salad, we’ll get as big as Jeff real soon.”  Spencer assured him.

Everyone arrived at almost the same time and sat down and started to eat.  Chip started to eat very tentatively, but all of a sudden, he started to chomp away.  He ate two pieces of pizza and all of his salad.  Spencer encouraged him, “Cub, you are going to get so strong that you will be able to beat up Jeff.”

The phone started to ring and Jeff answered.  “Hi Mr. Martinez, Michael is right here.”

Mickey took the phone and said, “Good evening Mr. Martinez. … Yes, I’m free Friday night.  What time would you want me?  … That sounds great, sir.  Tell the guys I can hardly wait to watch them, thank you sir.”

Mickey had just sat down when the phone rang again.  Jeff and answered and said, “Hi Aunt Nancy … Sure we will call them and check.  … We’ll let you know later who will be coming. … Talk to you soon.”

“Sammy, call Pop and Mother, and see if they would like to go to Aunt Nancy and Uncle Norm’s for dinner on Saturday.  We are all invited.”  Jeff said.

Sammy called the parents and came back and said, “They said yes.”

“Then call Aunt Nancy and tell her and that we aren’t sure who else is coming right now.” Jeff said.

Everyone was seated when Mrs. T. said, “Jack honey, I understand that Jane wants to retire.  What are you going to do?”

All of a sudden, Jeff came alive and said, “Dad, if Aunt Jane retires, then why not make Lash the office manager and hire a new nurse?”

“Jane did say she would do the accounting and payroll at home and Lash would be free to help as a nurse as needed.” I answered.

“Okay people, we’re having a dinner party on Saturday.  Keep your calendar open.  It will be a fun time.  Dad, you call Lash and Paul and tell them to be here.  Grams, you call Aunt Jane and Uncle Hank and Dr. and Mrs. Thompson and Aunt Anita and tell them.  Gigi, you make sure the guys are here, and Cub, you make sure your Mommy and Daddy are here. Oh, and Mark, you make sure your parents can come.  Now we need to get a move on or we won’t be there when Joni and Billy arrive at the house.”  Jeff finished as he stood up.

“Jeff, I need to get home so I can get to work in the morning.  I have to open at 5:30.”  Reg said.

“Okay, Tiger, put the leftover pizza in one box and bring it along with us.” Jeff told him.

Everyone left except Mickey and Teddy.  They quickly cleaned up the dishes and started the dishwasher.

The phone rang again.  I answered and a voice said. “Is Michael Smith there?”

“Mickey.” I called.

“Hello, this is Michael Smith, may I help you?  …  I am free on Saturday night, but may I ask a couple of questions? … What are the ages and sex of the children involved?  … Well ma’am, I don’t mind taking care of young ladies, but I have a qualified friend who might be better suited to this job.  She is a very dependable person.  Let me call her, and see if she is free and one of us will call you right back.  Here name is Georgia Thompson.  May I have your number please?”

Mickey hung up and called Georgia and she must have agreed to take the job because, he gave the number and all the information to her.  He was coming back to the table when the phone rang again.

Mickey picked up the phone.  “This is the Doctor Wilson residence. How may I help you?  …  I am free Saturday night, but I’d like to ask a couple of questions. …   Who would I be sitting for? What period of time would you want me?  …  Okay, let me check with Doctor Dad.”

“May I baby sit from 5:00 – 12:00 on Saturday?”  Mickey asked.

“Yes, I will be here if you need me.”  I answered.

“Could you take me to visit them please, so that I know what to expect on Saturday?”  Mickey asked.

“Sure.” I answered.

“Would it be okay if Dr. Wilson and I came over, so Davey will know who I am when I come over on Saturday?”  Mickey asked.

“Great. What is the address, please?  … Thank you, see you shortly.”  Mickey said, as he hung up.

Mickey handed me the address and asked, “Do you know where this is?”

“Yes, it is so close that if the weather were nice, we could walk there faster than drive.”  I answered.

We got in the T bird and drove around the block to the house directly behind mine.  When we got to the door, Davey answered.  “Hi Doctor Wilson, come in.”

“Hi Davey, this is Mickey.  He came to see you.”  I said, as I shook hands with Colin and Teri.”

Mickey started working his charm.  “Davey, you must be ten or eleven and my goodness, look at all those muscles.  You must really work hard.  May I see your bedroom and the family room and then I need to talk to your Daddy and Mommy if that is alright.”

The two young guys left and Teri said, “My goodness, I can’t believe what just happened.  Davey is captivated by Mickey.  I think I feel safe with him already.”

“He is a super young man and if there are any medical problems, I am going to be home Saturday night.” I assured them.

Just then the two guys came back and Davey asked, “Mommy and Daddy, would it be okay of Mickey keeps me company while you go to your party on Saturday?”

“Sure.” said Colin.

Davey jumped into Mickey’s arms and said, “This is going to be so cool.”

Mickey put him down and said, “I have to take Doctor Dad home so he can get ready for bed, and I still have a little homework to do.  I’ll see on Saturday.”  The guys high fived and Mickey shook hands with the Montgomery’s and handed them a list of information he would like them provide when he came Saturday.

We got back to the house and there was a note on the table that said Mickey was to call Mrs. Peterson at a certain number.  He initiated the call and said, “Hello ma’am, this is Michael Smith, I had a note for me to call you?  …  Ma’am I am busy that night, but I know someone who is qualified that might be willing to accept the job.  How old are the boys?  …  I will check with my friend and one of us will call you back.”

Mickey hung up and called another number. “Hey Chris, its Mick.  I just talked to someone who needs a sitter for Saturday night.  I already have a job.  Would you be interested?  …  You have had the babysitter training course right?  …  You said you were CPR certified too I think, so you would be perfect.  Call Mrs. Peterson at this number and see what you can work out.  …  Okay, see you tomorrow.”

Mickey hung up the phone and said, “Doctor Dad, I am not home if anymore calls come for me.  I really need to finish a little more homework.

I wondered what was happening at the Baxter’s house.

To be continued...

Feedback always welcome:

Editor's notes:

I am beginning to think that all the young kids are clones of Jeff.  They certainly do tend to follow his lead.  Everyone seems so grown up it is absolutely amazing.
