Chapter 43
Sunday Surprises

I woke up and a different person was waking me. I pulled him close and asked, “Mickey, why are you in bed with me?’

“Doctor Dad, I just think I needed to feel loved. You know, you look just like my brother Jeff, even this.” He flipped my penis and said, “Please hold me for a couple of minutes. No one else will, except Jeff, and he’s already gone. I really need it today.”

I suddenly realized we were both au natural, and I really had to go to the bathroom. I crawled out of bed, and went to the bathroom. He was standing there when I came out to get some briefs. “Yep, just like Jeff.” he said.

“What are you still doing here?” I asked.

“Doctor Dad, would you please give me another hug, to get me through the day?” he asked.

I opened my arms and he came running to me and hugged me as tight as he could and kissed me on the lips. I reciprocated and said, “Mickey, you are a very special person and don’t you ever forget it.”

He looked at me and smiled and said, “I have to go get dressed.”

I quickly showered and dressed and went downstairs and was greeted by five young men in blazers and ties. “Wow, you guys look good enough to eat.” I told them.

“Can it Doctor Dad, or Jeff will put you in a chastity belt.” said Spencer. “We are on our way to the church now to meet the Boss.”

I sat down, and started to eat my mushroom and cheese omelet. I rinsed my dishes and started the dish washer.

When I got to the church, I joined Jeff, who was talking to Father Gilbert and Bishop Lancaster. Mrs. Tillison joined us and we were visiting, when two couples came in and as they walked by, they were looking around and one of the women asked, “Why are there so many foreigners here? I thought they had their own churches that served their kind.”

I thought Mrs. Tillison was going to go into orbit, but Jeff said, “Grams, let me take care of this. Father Gilbert and Bishop Lancaster, be prepared, because I’m going to try and change their way of thinking during the service.”

Mrs. Tillison and I sat down and Jeff went to the organ and started to play the processional. The clergy came to the altar and the choir entered the pews. The service started and the organ practically sang every time Jeff played something. When the offertory was finished, Jeff came to the center of the altar area and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, I was asked to provide the special music for today. I have assembled some very talented people to help me.”

“The first group is made up of six wonderful professional gentlemen. I’m sure you will recognize the song they sing.” Jeff sat down at the keyboard and started and they sang "The Church in the Wildwood", but they ended it with a verse Jeff had written:

Oh come to the church in Fremont.
Oh come to the church on Ash Street.
Come one and all and we’ll all get along just fine.

Jeff came forward and said, “The next group is made up of teenagers. Ten of them are in high school, and two are in middle school, and again I’m sure that you will recognize the song.” Jeff handed the banjo to Kenny and the group sang "Swing Low Sweet Chariot".

As the song ended, Jeff said, “Our final group is made up of fifth graders. The song they will sing is based on Job, Chapter 12 verse 10.”

Jeff sat down at the keyboard and played the introduction, and the group sang "He’s Got Whole World in His Hands". When they finished Jeff came forward and said, “As I was making the final arrangements for today’s service, I heard some of the arriving members of the congregation making some unkind comments that rather upset those of us who heard it, so I am going to have the combined groups sing this song together.” The entire group sang "Jesus Loves the Little Children".

Jeff went back to the organ and sat down.

Bishop Lancaster came to the lectern and said, “I am truly amazed by what these exciting and talented young people have done this morning. I know for a fact that they had never sung together until last night. Jeff, please stand with the choir. Now, everyone let’s show them just how good they were.” and he started to applaud. The entire congregation stood and applauded for several minutes.

When everyone finally sat down, the Bishop said, “I hope everyone was listening to the words of the songs this morning. God loves us all, no matter what our background. I think you all need to go out and bring some friends to church with you, so they can enjoy the warmth here. That is one of the reasons I enjoy coming to this church so much.”

He took a deep breath and said, “I was standing with Jeff, when we heard the unchristian like comments of some of the members, and the song that Jeff had the groups sing tells of God’s love for all people, and that he sent he son to us, to try to get us see the light. I hope you all remember that God loves us all, no matter what the color of our skin.”

He turned to Jeff and said, “Now Jeff, we want to hear the other song you young people did last night, that almost took the roof off the house.”

Jeff asked, “Are you sure, Sir?”

“Absolutely.” the Bishop answered, as he sat down.

Jeff came out with his trumpet, Kim had a trombone, Bobby brought his drums, Kenny had his banjo and David sat the keyboard. The choir lined up in rows, according to age and they started to play and sing When the Saints Go Marching In. They finished the last verse and Spencer stepped forward and said, “Everyone join us in the last refrain.”

The church started to vibrate as everyone clapped and sang. Father Gilbert came forward as the song was ending and said, “Let us pray. Dear Lord, we thank you for sending these talented young people to us, and we truly appreciate the special talents you have given them and your making them willing to share those talents with us, to help us to become better Christians. Now remember we pray for these people with special needs, and celebrate their special joys. I pray that you will guide us as we listen to Miss Lincoln and Mr. Washington sing the prayer that your son taught his disciples.

Jeff played the introduction and Dina and Drew did a phenomenal job. The choir had joined hands when they started and the church was totally silent. Jeff finally started the recessional and when he finished, he was engulfed by people.

The first in line was Mrs. McGuire, who said, “I can’t believe you pulled this together in less that and hour. You wouldn’t be willing to help me would you?”

“Ma’am, I’m pretty much extended as far as I can go.” he answered.

People were still standing to talk him when the two couples involved in the incident came to talk to him. Jeff got up and walked to the back of the church so they could talk in private.

“Young man, I am Dan Clemson, and this is my wife Eleanor. These are our friends Elizabeth and Nevin Gregory. I’m sorry you overheard my wife’s comments. You have made her realize that maybe she should be more tolerant and respectful and not talk before she thinks.”

“Mr. and Mrs. Clemson and Mr. and Mrs. Gregory, I appreciate your apology. I just hope you mean what you said, and I suggest that you talk to Father Gilbert, Bishop Lancaster and Mrs. Tillison and apologize to them also. They were standing with me.” Jeff turned and walked away.

When they heard who all had heard the comments, they just quietly left. Jeff just went and sat down in the last pew.

Everyone else was sitting in the Fellowship Hall eating the food that the parents had brought. Spencer looked up and asked, “Where’s Jeff?”

Josh and Ben got up and said, “We’ll find him.”

They left and found Jeff in the back choir pew in tears. They sat down on either side him and put their arms around him and asked, “What’s wrong, Jeff?”

“I just feel so overwhelmed. There are so many things happening and I’m not sure that I am handling any of them with justice.” he sighed.

“Young man, I agree that you have a lot going on, but I think that you are managing them all extremely well.” said Ben.

Just then Spencer pulled me with him and said, “Doctor Dad, I think something is wrong with Jeff. Let’s go find him.”

When we saw him, Spencer ran and jumped on his lap and held his face and asked, “Boss, why do I always have to worry about you? Now come get the food I saved for you.”

Jeff held him tight and kissed him and asked, “Why are you always taking care of me?”

“Because I love you, and I want to grow up to be like you. Now come get something to eat before those chow hounds eat your food.” Spencer said, as he jumped off his lap and pulled Jeff until he stood up.

“Wait, I have a question. Uncle Ben and Uncle Josh are going to Omaha with us after the second service. Tiger, you can bring one person. Who would you like to ask?” Jeff inquired.

“Could we ask Bobby to go? Teddy and Toby want to be together and they both like to swim. Bobby doesn’t really enjoy the water very much.”

“Okay Dad, you tell Lash and Paul they are going with us, and don’t take no for an answer. Uncle Josh and Uncle Ben, you tell Tyler and Kevin that they are going with us and the Tiger, and I will talk to Bobby and his parents and Mrs. Baxter.” Jeff ordered.

I talked to Lash and Paul, and they agreed to go. I watched as Tyler and Kevin agreed. Jeff and Spencer went to Bobby and said, “We are going to Omaha after the second service. Would you like to go with us?”

Bobby jumped up and said, “That would be so cool, but let’s make sure it’s okay with my parents.”

They went to the Lincolns and Jeff asked, “Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln, we are going to Omaha this afternoon. Dad is going with us so we will have a doctor with us, could Bobby please go along and keep Spencer company?”

They looked at each other and Mr. Lincoln said, “He may go, but if he doesn’t behave, you have our permission to spank him so hard that he will have to stand on the way home.”

“Not on my watch. Cars don’t move unless all seatbelts are fastened, so I guess he will just have to suffer.” Jeff laughed.

They walked to Mrs. Baxter and they said, “Gigi, the guys are going to Omaha with us right after the second service. Will you be okay?”

“Of course, and besides Jane and Hank are taking Cora, Aggie and me to the club for lunch. I’ll be fine, now that I won’t have to have help moving around, and I can start organizing my wonderful new bedroom.” she answered.

Jeff looked at the clock and said, “Okay everyone, bathroom time, and I want to see this Fellowship Hall looking better than when we invaded. Be ready to enter when I start playing. As Jeff was getting ready to leave, he was surrounded by Bobby Talltrees, Kim, Lori and Dina.

Bobby said, “We want to thank you for including us this weekend. We have had a wonderful time, and you certainly aren’t afraid to say what you think, but you did it in such a nice way.” Bobby hugged him and the three girls kissed him.

Jeff looked at Father Gilbert and Bishop Lancaster and asked, “Do you want us to change anything?”

They looked at each other and the Bishop said, “If it works well, why tinker with it? Do it all exactly the same.”

The second service was even better than the first. When it was over, there were so many people waiting to talk to Jeff that I figured we would never get out of there. Fortunately, everyone realized there was a line, and kept their conversations short. The Campbell’s and Dr. Crawford and her husband were first.

“Jeff, we really appreciated how you went on the offensive this morning. Our children seemed to gain so much esteem when you made your comments and then the Bishop supported you.” said Anne as she kissed him.

Next were Adam and Aaron. “Jeff you were fantastic. You never looked at any music did you? I can’t believe that you are only a new freshman. I’ll see you tomorrow at 12:15.

“Jeff.” said Mr. Lincoln, “This is Billy Ferguson. He would appreciate the opportunity to make a couple of extra dollars to help with the cost of his wedding.”

Jeff and Billy shook hands and Billy said, “This is my fiancé, Joni Summers.”

Jeff kissed and greeted her and said, “Let’s go talk to Mrs. Baxter.”

They walked over to Mrs. Baxter and before Jeff could say anything, she said, “Hi Bullet Man and Joni. I understand that you finally settled on the date for the big day.”

Jeff said, “Bullet Man here has agreed to do the electrical work. Would it be okay if he came tomorrow night at 7:30 to discuss what we want done?”

“Since I have no idea what you have in mind, I’ll have Rocket Man send you a signal when the Boss here is ready.” Gigi giggled.

Everyone who was listening started to laugh and Spencer said, “I want to hear about this Rocket Man and Bullet Man stuff, but I’ll wait until tomorrow night since everyone is waiting to go eat.”

Billy asked, “Can Joni come with me? She has some things she wants to talk to you about, Mrs. Baxter.”

“The more the merrier.” laughed Gigi.

“Jeff.” said Joni, “Would you be willing to play the organ for our wedding on June 18th here at the church, and could you get Drew and Dina to sing?”

“I would be thrilled to play, but you need to talk to Drew and Dina, they are their own persons.”

“Dina and Drew, could you come here for a minute?” Jeff called. “Billy and Joni would like to ask you something.”

The two came and Billy said, “Dina and Drew, we are getting married on June 18th. We were so impressed with the way you two sang together today that we would like you to sing at our wedding. Would you be willing to do it?”

Drew and Dina looked at each other and Dina said, “I can do it. How about you Drew?”

Drew looked at Jeff and said, “I never thought of myself as a singer, but I would be willing to do it with Jeff’s and Dina’s help.”

Everyone shook hands and the Winstons were waiting to talk to Jeff. Coach Winston said. “Thanks for including us this weekend, we have had a wonderful time and the girls had a blast. They think that you and Spencer are the best.” Then they both hugged him.

The last person was Mrs. Tice. When she got to Jeff, she turned and said, “Jack, for a son you didn’t know you had until Christmas Eve, you sure did a good job subliminally. Jeff, I can’t believe how well these young people respond to you.” She kissed him on the cheek.

Jeff hugged her and gave her a kiss and said, “Thanks, but I really didn’t do much.”

She shook her head and walked away.

Greg came up as Jeff was closing and locking the organ and started to ask, “Jeff and Jack would it be okay if …”

“No and no.” said Jeff.

“I was just going to ask if the three Smith guys could go to brunch with us.” Greg said.

“I’m sorry sir; I guess I’m just feeling overextended. The guys can go if they wish, but please don’t ask me to play or provide the special music until I get everything settled at school, and with the family.” Jeff sighed.

“Jeff, I appreciate how you feel right now, but you are so talented and can get the most out of people; I promise I won’t ask you to do anything for three weeks. Oh by the way, here is your pay for all the work you have done here at the church so far.”

Jeff looked at the check and said, “But I didn’t do it for money.”

“Nonsense Jeff. You worked hard for it. Now get your entourage, they are waiting for you.” Greg said, chuckling to himself, as he walked away.

We walked out and the guys were all waiting. Jeff took charge and said, “Everyone, go put on a sweater and be at Dad’s house in twenty five minutes. Lash, you and the Coach go directly to Dad’s house, and we’ll loan you sweaters.”

“Uncle Ben and Uncle Josh, you take Drew and Kenny to Grams’ house and they can change. Spike, you can borrow one of Teddy’s sweaters.

We were walking to the cars when Jeff was accosted by Mickey. “Jeff, guess what? I found two more 13 year olds to sing with us the next time. This is Mr. Bressler’s brother Chris, and this is his friend Beth Richards. They can both sing and they really want to join us when we sing next time. Can they go swimming with us this afternoon so Georgia and I aren’t so outnumbered?”

Jeff held up his hand and said, “Yes, if and when we sing again, they would be a welcomed addition. As far as swimming, clear that with Grams. I’m sure it would be okay, and make sure they understand the rules.”

“Mister Jeff, can I ask you a question?” asked Chris.

“One, as long as you just call me Jeff.” Jeff laughed.

“I was watching very closely today, and I don’t think you used any music except on the hymns. Am I right?” Chris asked.

“I did have the hymn music before me to remind me how many verses there were for the hymns.” Jeff answered.

“Could you teach me to play like that? I am so tired of having to play etudes and waltzes and the standard things. I just want to make music come alive like you did today.” Chris sighed.

“Chris, that is two questions, but I’ll make you a deal. We can talk about it some night this week.” Jeff said.

Sammy pulled up in the Camry and honked the horn. Jeff went and opened the driver’s door and said, “Thanks for bringing the car. Here are the keys for the T-Bird, I know what the mileage is, and I don’t want to see any scratches or dents. Have a good lunch.” Sammy climbed out but he just shrugged.

When we got everyone to the house, and every one was properly attired, Jeff began. “There are fourteen of us, so we need to take three cars. Two of them are givens, since Kenny will be driving the Camry and Drew will be driving the BMW.”

“We’ll drive the van. It will hold six, quite comfortably.” offered Ben.

“Bobby and I will ride shotgun in the van.” said Spencer.

“What does that mean?” asked Drew.

Bobby piped in, “Mr. Bressler says that guy who sat on the stagecoach with the driver and always had a gun and he would sometimes move to back to make sure that the coach was not attacked from the rear. Thus we have taken the term, shot gun, to mean riding in the back.”

“Yeah, but I think the real reason he was riding at the back was that he wanted to get away from the driver’s bad breath, and don’t worry Uncle Ben, if anyone attacks us, Bobby and I will pee out the back window and drive them away.” Spencer said, very seriously.

Everyone went into hysterics and finally Jeff said, “I vote for Spencer’s theory. Lash, you and the Coach ride with Uncle Josh and Uncle Ben.

Tyler and Dad, you ride with Drew and Mark and Kenny, Matt and Kevin are stuck with me.”

“One last issue.” Jeff said. “Where do we want to eat?”

“Could we go back to the Red Lobster at Oak View again?” asked Drew.

“Any other nominations? Seeing none, I guess that is where we are heading. Any questions?” Jeff asked.

“What do you eat at the Red whatever?” asked Spencer.

“Usually, people have some sort of fish or seafood, but they do have a few other things on the menu.” Jeff answered.

“I can only remember eating fish one time, and our Mother almost died. She had an allergic reaction to the trout that Dad and Tyler had caught.” Spencer sobbed.

Tyler spoke up, “Remember Spencer, Dad and Mother had us tested and we are fine. The reason we didn’t eat seafood was because we didn't want anything to happen to Mother.”

“If anyone needs to use the bathroom, do it now.” Jeff ordered.

To be continued...

Feedback always welcome:

Editor's Notes:

Well, it looks like they are going to eat at the dreaded Red Lobster again. Good food, and very nice service as well at that particular restaurant, if I remember correctly. I seem to remember there was a very nice waiter.

I think those people that made a fuss about foreigners, should go back to the country they came from and shut the bleep up. Let's see what happens next time. This has been another great chapter.
