Chapter 35
The Madness Continues

They went into the Tillison’s and Drew went back to work with the guys. Jeff told Mrs. T. and Aunt Cora what happened. Mrs. Tillison said, “Jeff, expect some fireworks when you go to get Tyler’s truck.” She didn’t tell him anymore.

Jeff went upstairs to the work area said, “You guys are doing great. It looks really good. I’m leaving to get Spencer now. I’ll be back in twenty minutes Tyler.”

Jeff went and got Spencer, who was waiting and they picked up Tyler. When they got to the bank, Kevin was waiting for them. They went in and Jeff went to Mr. Carmichael’s secretary and said, “Would you tell Mr. Carmichael and Mr. Thompson that the Knights and Mr. Baxter are here please?”

“Yes Mr. Wilson. Hi again Spencer, would you like four more lemonades after everyone gets settled?”

“That would be nice Miss Roberts.” he answered.

She left and came back and showed them to the conference room where four lemonades were waiting. After all the introductions were taken care of, Mr. Carmichael began. “This should go fast, Gentlemen. I have a deposit slip for you to sign, Tyler, The money is already in your account, and I have changed your account to one that will draw interest. I suggest that you might consider putting some of your account into an investment account.”

Tyler looked at the deposit slip signed and asked, “Where did this money come from?”

“I am not at liberty to tell you, but I do have this note for you.” said Mr. Carmichael.”

“Now Spencer, I would like you to sign this receipt. I have put the money into an investment account for you, so that when you go to college, you will have lots of money. Tyler will need to be a cosigner since you are under sixteen.”

Spencer signed the form and asked, “He can’t sign away my money, can he?”

“No sir, you need two signatures and you will receive a monthly statement so you can make sure that your money is not being misappropriated. If you ever have any questions, please call me. I have a note for you too.”

“Now Mr. Baxter, I don’t think you have an account at our bank, so I put your money into an account similar to Tyler’s, but you will have a few extra papers to sign. If you have an account at another bank, I hope you will consider closing it, and consolidating your assets.” Randy said.

Kevin signed the papers and Randy handed him a note.

“Well that concludes our business.” said Hank. He stood and shook their hands and Randy did the same.

Hank went to Jeff and said, “I wish I could be with you when you go to get Tyler’s truck. You better be ready for a major explosion.”

“Sir, I think he is already on overload.” Jeff answered.

As they were walking out, Jeff asked, “Kevin, what time do you want one of us tonight?”

“How about 8:30?” Kevin asked.

“Fine, one of us will be there.” Jeff said. “See you.” He led Spencer and Tyler to his car, and drove to my office. As he was walking in, he said, “Dad needs you to check something.”

They were met by Lash and he said, “Right this way guys. I didn’t get enough blood for lunch. I need more.”

He started with Spencer and asked, “Where did you go for lunch Spence?”

“We went to this neat hamburger place that had all sorts of goodies. It was really good.” Spencer answered.

“All done, young man. Now it is your turn, Tyler.” Lash said.

He moved to Tyler and Jeff asked, “What did you have for lunch, Tyler?”

“Mrs. Tillison made us chicken salad with fresh fruit and some cookies.” Tyler answered.

“All done guys.” Lash said.

I walked in just then and Spencer asked, “We aren’t going to die are we Doctor Dad?”

“No, you probably will live to be a hundred if you take care of yourselves, you just had a couple of readings that were low, and I wanted to recheck them.” I answered.

“Good.” said Spencer. He turned to Lash and asked, “Are you treating Mr. Murphy well?”

“What do you mean, Spencer?” asked Tyler.

“Don’t be silly. They are partners even though they try to hide it.” Spencer answered.

I thought Lash was going to drop the blood samples. Jeff went to Spencer and asked, “Why did you say something like that, Spencer?”

“Did you watch them yesterday at church? The way they tried to act like they weren’t together, but I wasn’t fooled. I wasn’t born in a cave. Don’t worry I haven’t said anything to anyone else, and I won’t.” Spencer replied.

Lash picked Spencer up and hugged him and said. Thank you, sir, Paul and I are just fine. I guess we probably need to be more careful.”

“Why don’t you let everyone know what the situation is, and then you won’t have to play games?” Spencer asked.

“Paul is a teacher. He would be fired, if the school board heard or even thought that he might be gay.” Lash sighed.

“Lash, none of us are going to say anything, but we’re going to find a way to get the two of you together in public.” Spencer said. “Okay guys, we need to go get Ty’s truck, otherwise he will be throwing another tantrum.” Spencer said, as he started to leave.

The three guys left and Lash and I just stood there shaking our heads in disbelief.

Jeff pulled into the GMC dealership and Tyler said, “I don’t see our truck.”

“Let’s go in and find out where it is.” Jeff said.

They walked in and were met by Mr. Corl. He greeted them and said, “Mr. Knight, I am sorry, we couldn’t save your old truck. It was beyond repair. We have a replacement for you. All you have to do is sign some papers and you are on your way.”

Tyler looked like he was near tears, but he signed the papers and Mr. Corl handed him a set of license plates and said, “Let’s go look at your truck, Sir.” He took the guys to the service garage and handed Tyler a set of keys and took him to the gray truck that Tyler had seen in the morning and said, “Now if you’ll take it, the guys would be pleased, because they want to go home. Your papers are all in the glove compartment.” He turned and walked away.

Tyler got in and pulled out of the garage and Jeff and Spencer went to the T bird. Spencer asked, “Jeff, what just happened?”

“Tiger, I am not sure, but I hope that Tyler can handle everything that happened this afternoon, or none of us are going to get any sleep tonight.” Jeff answered.

When Jeff and Spencer got to the Tillison house, Tyler was standing, looking at the new truck with tears in his eyes. Jeff went to him and said, “Tyler, you have a job to do, and you have already lost a lot of time, today. Let’s go and see how the guys have progressed while we were gone.”

Tyler followed them into the house and he and Jeff went upstairs. Spencer stayed downstairs and was talking to Mrs. T. and Aunt Cora.

The doorbell rang and Spencer took a man to the living room to talk to Mrs. Tillison and Aunt Cora. “Spencer, please ask the guys to come down.” Mrs. T said.

Spencer brought the four guys down and Mrs. Tillison introduced the man. “This is Mr. Baldwin. He is a certified driver’s education instructor. He is going to give Drew and Kenny private instruction. Now listen to what he has to say.”

“I’ll give you two group instruction but you need someone to help you get the required driving time and miles. I will meet you here at Mrs. Tillison's house each afternoon at 5:15 each weekday. That way, I can bring Kenny with me after swim team practice.” Mr. Baldwin said.

Jeff interrupted, “What are the driving requirements sir?”

“They must drive 20 hours or 300 miles. They must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is 18 or older, who will certify the time and distance.” Mr. Baldwin answered.

“Can they count the time and miles that they have already driven since they got their learner’s permits?” Jeff asked.

“Yes.” answered Mr. Baldwin.

“Good, that means they have close to 100 miles already. They both drove to Farmer Brown’s in Waterloo and we try to get them to drive no matter where we go. I am 18, Tyler is 20, Mrs. Tillison is 39 and my Dad is 39 so there shouldn’t be a problem. Guys we will have to make a trip to Omaha this weekend and we will arrange to take two vehicles.”

Mr. Baldwin was looking bewildered as Jeff said, “Sir, we’ll see you here tomorrow night at 5:15.”

Mrs. Tillison got up and handed Mr. Baldwin an envelope and said, “This should take care of the guys’ lessons.” She escorted him to the door.

“Okay people, I’m going to go get changed and come back and help the guys. I’ll stop and get sandwiches since I think you all had a big lunch. I’ll be back in about 30 minutes. Come Spencer, you can go with my family to dinner.” Jeff said, as he started to the door, followed by Spencer.

They arrived at the house and Spencer came in and announced, "Jeff and I are going back to Gram’s house and help Tyler and his crew for a while so we won’t be going to dinner with you.”

Jeff said, “The guys have lost so much time because they had so many appointments and they are afraid they won’t be finished by tomorrow night and there are already things scheduled for them to do tomorrow, too.” He turned to Linda and Eric and asked, “Did you get the groceries?”

“Yes Jeff. It’s too bad you won’t be going with us. Norm and Nancy and the twins are going to join us as are Greg and Anita and their children.” Linda said.

Jeff turned to Spencer and asked, “Are you sure you wouldn’t rather go with the guys to dinner?’

Spencer thought for a second and said, “I think I had better go with you, in case Tyler explodes.”

“Eric and Linda, I think I’ll go with Jeff and Spencer so would you please express our apologies?” I asked.

They nodded and the three of us went and did a quick change. On the way to the Tillison house, Jeff and Spencer gave me a brief account of what had happened at the bank and the car dealership. Thank goodness they did, so I had an idea of what to expect.

Jeff stopped at a Subway shop and we went in and he ordered six large sandwiches of different kinds. When we got to Mrs. T’s, he said, “Dad, you go tell the guys that the sandwiches are here. Spencer would you please put out six glasses of milk and two cups of tea.”

The guys got cleaned up and they came to the table. Jeff had cut the sandwiches into smaller sections and they were on two trays. Everyone dug in and everything disappeared. Jeff said, “Dad, you and Spencer do the dishes and I’ll go help the guys if I can.”

Aunt Cora said, “Honey, Aggie and I will do the dishes. Everyone has been waiting on us for four days. We need to keep busy too. Now everybody out.”

The six of us went upstairs and Tyler put us all to work. At 7:55 Jeff announced, “I'll be right back. I’ll go help Kevin with his mother.”

Jeff left and he was back in about thirty minutes. When he came in, Mrs. Tillison asked. “How did Tyler react to everything this afternoon?”

“That’s what’s scary. There has been no outward reaction yet, but Spencer, Dad and I are afraid of what is going to happen when everything has time to sink in.”

“Well, keep me posted and now go tell the work crew it is time to quit for the day. Tell them that we old ladies need to get our beauty sleep.” Mrs. T. said.

Jeff came in and said, “Mrs. T. and Aunt Cora want to go to bed but first they need us in the kitchen.”

Everyone stopped and followed Jeff downstairs. When we got to the kitchen the table was set with six glasses of milk and two cups of tea. The places with the milk had large pieces of pie and the two other places had smaller pieces.

We started to eat and Jeff said, “This isn’t a bought pie. It is some of the best banana cream pie I have ever tasted.”

“We made it this afternoon, after we got back from Norm’s office.” Aunt Cora said.

Jeff and Spencer quickly rinsed the dishes and cleaned up and started the dishwasher. “Okay Drew, get to bed. You have a very busy day tomorrow.”

“I’ll take Kenny home. Dad, you and Spencer ride with Tyler in his new truck, to make sure he doesn’t wreck it. Let’s put a move on. I’ll probably beat you home, because he is afraid to put the pedal down too far.” Drew and Kenny started laughing and Tyler scowled.

We all left, and Tyler drove straight to the house. When we got there, I said, “Let me move my car you can put the truck in there so you can check it out if you have any questions. I moved the car and he pulled the truck into the garage. He took the owner’s manual and sat at the kitchen table reading it.

About 15 minutes later, Spencer came and said, “Doctor Dad, where is Jeff? He should be here by now.”

“Tiger, you worry too much. Go take a shower and crawl into our bed and watch some television.”

Jeff came in after ten minutes and said, “I’m sorry I’m late, but Kenny and I were talking about possible tutors for Drew. He told Tyler and me what had happened at the high school and then he turned to Tyler and said, “I am going to take the two guys to school tomorrow at 10:00 so you will lose your help for about two hours.”

“I’ll be fine by myself.” Tyler answered. “Maybe you could help us in the afternoon and we can finish by 5:00, so I can get the tools and materials back to the shop for Wednesday morning.” Tyler answered.

“I can do that.” Jeff answered. The Smith family came in.

“Hi guys.” said Mickey. “Everyone is coming for exercises in the morning. David said he would pick the three guys up. He is going to call Drew and Kenny and tell them. Whose wheels are those in the garage? It is a way out truck.”

Jeff and I pointed to Tyler.

“Jeff, could you take your Dad to work tomorrow? I am going to need a car to go to the Valley. The girls are going to lunch and the young people want to go to Omaha to celebrate their last day of freedom. I’ll take the Camry, Linda can take the BMW and Sammy can take the van since he is fully insured while driving it.” Eric asked.

I answered and said, “Either Jeff or Tyler can take me to work, as long as someone remembers to pick me up at 5:15.” I laughed.

Jeff said, “I’m going up to get ready for bed. It has been a busy day. I’ll see everyone in the morning.”

He left and everyone started to go their own way. I locked the house and made sure the lights were out. As I walked into the bedroom Jeff was coming out of the shower in his briefs and motioned to a sleeping Spencer.

I took a shower and followed his lead and put on briefs. Jeff was coming through the door of the adjoining room with Tyler and he motioned me to sit down in the sitting area.

When we were seated, Jeff started, “Tyler, I did not know about any of the things that happened to you today, nor did Dad. I am not positive who caused the things to happen, but I have a good idea. I think Mr. Carmichael handed you a note. May I see it?”

Tyler went and got the note and showed it to Jeff and then he passed it to me to read and Jeff said, “I guess you need to think about your future now Tyler and decide what you really want to do. You have plenty of time to think about it, since it is almost too late do anything this semester. Now get into the bed. I am exhausted.”

We all climbed into bed and Spencer stirred and asked, “Is that you Tyler?”

“Tiger, we are all here and Dad is going to hold Tyler so he can’t run away.” Jeff said.

Spencer snuggled closer to both Jeff and Tyler and it was quiet. We were all exhausted.

I went to sleep thinking ‘surely Tuesday won’t be this hectic’.

Editor's Notes:

Why do I have the feeling that things will indeed be as hectic? I can't get over how interesting this story is. I also must say that I am becoming more and more bound up in the plot and the characters. These people are becoming family. I can hardly wait for each new chapter. I think I have said that before.
