Chapter 29
The Afternoon of New Year’s Day
All the adults except Josh and Ben went to the living room, instead they went to
the kitchen and said, “Put us to work, boss.”
“Are you sure you don’t mind?” Jeff asked. If one of you could wash and the
other dry, then I could put the things away. I can get everyone else organized.”
He called everyone in and said, “Here’s what we need to do. “David, you go get
your keyboard and a swim suit. If you have an extra suit, take Sammy with you.
Also, take Kenny and Dana to get their suits.”
“Kenny, get your guitar. I don’t suppose you have any old swimming suits that
Teddy, Spencer and Mickey might be able to use do you?”
Kenny answered, “I have never thrown away a suit. My mom keeps yelling at me to
get rid of them so that I will have more room.”
“Good.” Jeff turned to Candy and said, “You take Georgia and Toby and get your
suits.”
He turned to the twins, “can you get one of your parents to take you for your
suits?”
“Why can’t Candy take us too? We only live two doors away.” Melody asked.
“Check with your parents.” Jeff said.
He then turned to Tyler and flipped him his car keys and said, “Take my car and
take Kevin to get his suit. Then go to the house and get my guitar which is on
the shelf in the bedroom closet. There are three pairs of swimming trunks in the
second drawer on the left, with my underwear so bring them back with you, as
well.”
Spencer, you, Teddy and Jimmy, go down stairs and make sure that there is room
for us to practice, and then make sure there are plenty of towels for when we go
swimming..”
“Mickey, you and Drew finish clearing the dishes from the table, and take down
the extra table and chairs and put them away, and get the room back in order.”
That left only Jeff, Josh and Ben in the kitchen. They started working and
talking. Josh asked, “What’s the story with the Knight guys?”
Mr. Robinson walked in just as Jeff started their story. He succinctly told
everything he knew about the guys. When he was finishing, he said, I dearly love
both of them already, and would love to have them live with my Dad and me, but I
don’t think that is the solution.”
“What if we asked them to come live with us? We can give them a good life.”
asked Ben.
“Sir, I don’t think that would work. That would mean that Tyler would have to
quit his job and I think he is just beginning to feel secure. I think Tyler
would totally rebel, not because you are gay, but because he would view it as
charity. Spencer is just as proud as Tyler.”
“Jeff, I have a feeling that you are already working on a solution to their
problem, aren’t you?” asked his Granddad.
“Yep, but I have to do some more thinking about the problem.” Jeff answered.
“While you are thinking about it, why don’t you tell us what’s up with the
Baxters? I don’t remember the Baxters as being friends of my Mother’s.” Josh
asked.
Jeff told the story of Kevin and his mother, in as much detail as he knew even
the incident in the kitchen. He was interrupted by Mr. Robinson.
“Jeff, are you thinking of getting the two families together?”
“Yes sir, but I still haven’t worked out the details.” Jeff answered
“Do you think it would be okay for me to talk to Tyler and Kevin sometime this
afternoon?’ Mr. Robinson asked.
“Of course Granddad, but don’t let them know how much you already know about
them.” Jeff answered.
“Can we be there also?” asked Ben.
“Why not? Now, if you will excuse me, I have to get ready to form a singing
group.” Jeff said, as he left.
Jeff came in and asked, Grams T., do you have a computer that has access to the
internet?”
She looked at him and said, “Does an airplane have wings. Come on follow me.”
They left and came back quickly. Jeff was carrying some papers as he disappeared
downstairs.
When the three gentlemen came in, they were shaking their heads and laughing.
Josh came and sat down next to me, and said, “Jack, you have a human dynamo on
your hands, don’t you?”
Eric was sitting next to me and said, “Poor Jack, doesn’t know half of what it
means to a have a wonderful son like Jeff.”
We could hear singing from downstairs, but couldn’t hear what was being sung.
They had been practicing for almost an hour when, all of a sudden, they came
into the living room. Kenny and Jeff had their guitars as the group started to
sing a medley from the sound of music. When they got to Edelweiss, Tyler and
Kevin sang a duet. When they finished, everyone applauded.
Jeff stepped in and said, “Okay, swim time, but I want a certified lifeguard on
duty at all times, who is trained in CPR and up to date in their certification.
I’ll be down shortly to take my turn.”
The others left and Jeff went to talk to Mr. Hendrix who was shaking his head
yes. Jeff went to talk to Mrs. Baxter. She listened to him and said, “Jeff, the
house isn’t very clean, but go ahead.”
“I am going to go swim and take my turn at being lifeguard and then I will round
up Kevin and Tyler so they can go with us, Mr. Hendrix.” Jeff announced as he
left.
Jeff left and Mrs. Tillison came over and asked Mr. Hendrix, “What's Jeff
plotting, Bill?”
“I think he wants to do some remodeling on the Baxter’s house so she doesn’t
need to be carried up and down the stairs.” he answered.
I watched as Josh, Ben and Mr. Robinson went downstairs. I couldn’t stand not
knowing what was happening, so I went down also. When I get to the pool area, I
saw Mr. Robinson, Josh and Ben talking to Kevin and Tyler. What caught my eye
though, were three giggling ten year old boys standing on the side. They charged
Drew who was sitting on the side of the pool and pushed him into the water.
Drew was flailing in the water. Kenny grabbed him from the front and Jeff dove
in and got to his back. They worked Drew back to the side of the pool until he
was safe. Jeff said, “Stay here until your excitement goes away.” He turned to
Kenny and said, “Go swim some laps until you calm down a bit.”
Jeff climbed out and called, “Toby, Spence and Teddy, I want you here and I mean
now.”
They all came and he read them the riot act. “I should kick your butts out of
this pool for good. You should never do what you guys just did unless you are
sure the person can swim. I want you to go apologize to Drew, and then sit in
three corners of the pool so you can’t talk to anyone for 15 minutes. Now move.”
Everyone was watching and listening to him. When he finished, he turned and
said, “New life guard on duty.”
Kenny climbed out and said, “My turn.”
“Make sure the three clowns do as they were told, and not one minute less. Kevin
and Tyler, we need to change. We have an appointment.” Jeff said.
The three guys came out of the changing area and started up the stairs to get
Mr. Hendrix. “Dad, are you coming with us?’” Jeff called.
When we got upstairs, Jeff said, “We’ll be back shortly, Grams. We’re taking
your car, if you don’t mind.”
When we got to the Baxter house, Jeff started, “Mr. Hendrix, this is what I
would like you to look at.” He led us to the dining room which was very large.
I would like to change this room into a bedroom so that it has access to the
bathroom which is located right behind here. It would need to be wheel chair
accessible and handicapped friendly. Can it be done?”
Mr. Hendrix looked around and said, “It could be done rather easily.”
“Good.” said Jeff. “Let’s go back to the party.”
On the way back Jeff asked, “Mr. Hendrix, has Mrs. Tillison talked to you about
doing some work in Drew’s rooms?”
“Yes she has. When we get back, would you ask Drew and Kenny to come upstairs so
I can talk to them and Tyler?” Mr. Hendrix answered.
Jeff immediately went down and got the two guys and Mr. Hendrix said, “Guys,
let’s go upstairs. I have a proposal for you.”
Upstairs Mr. Hendrix explained, “Drew wants this room connected to his study
similar to what we did at Doctor Wilson’s house to connect Jeff’s study and the
master bedroom. I assume that you would like the closet torn out in the study as
well, to give you more room in the study, Drew?”
“Yes sir.” Drew answered.
“Well, I think that an opening for a door could fit here, so that there is still
access to the bathroom from both sides.” Mr. Hendrix said, as he pointed to the
areas. “Do you guys want to work on this on Monday and Tuesday? Tyler would be
in charge and everyone would get paid for only the hours they work. I haven’t
scheduled anyone to come to work until Wednesday, since I promised Kenny's
mother that we would go visit her sisters in Kansas City. Tyler, do you think
you can handle the job?”
“Yes sir.” Tyler answered.
“I assume you two wouldn’t mind making some extra money. Is that correct.” he
asked. Kenny and Drew nodded yes.
“Fine, but you only get paid for the hours you actually work, as I said. I have
the feeling that you all will have personal things that need to be taken care
of. If you don’t get it done on Tuesday, then you can finish it in the evenings.
Any questions?” he asked.
“No sir. We can handle it. Thank you.” Tyler answered.
“Just get the supplies you need, and charge them to my accounts at the stores
and keep the receipts and give them to the office on Wednesday.” Mr. Hendrix
said, as they were coming down the stairs.
Jeff went downstairs and came back with Spencer, and said, “Uncle Norm, and Aunt
Nancy, I think you had better buy two chastity belts. Kenny, remind everyone
that I want them at the church no later than 8:00. Drew, I’ll pick you up at
6:50 on my way to the church. You can keep me company while I'm practicing.”
“Why me?” asked Drew.
“Because I said so. That’s why.” Jeff answered. “Now, Mrs. Baxter, we are ready
to roll. Tyler, you take Mrs. Baxter and Kevin home in the Camry, and I’ll bring
Spencer with me.”
“Tyler honey, take the BMW, it is more comfortable and besides with all of the
people at Jack’s house, you are going to need an extra set of wheels.” Mrs.
Tillison ordered. “I don’t want any back talk from anybody, either.” she added.
After they had gone, Josh asked, “Mr. Hendrix, how much would it cost to
renovate the Baxter house like Jeff has in mind?”
“I estimate that the entire project could be done for under $5,000.00. The most
costly thing would be to fix the bathroom like Jeff wants. I think Tyler could
do everything but the plumbing.” Mr. Hendrix answered.
I watched Mrs. Tillison, and she was listening very carefully to every word.
Mr. Robinson spoke and said, “I am overwhelmed by all these young people. I get
the feeling that maybe Jeff is the force pushing them.”
“Maybe not pushing.” said Mrs. Tillison. “But he’s determined to make them all
be better people.”
Aunt Cora added, “I think the young people are so fortunate to have a mentor
like Jeff.”
Linda said, “The other three sons try so hard to be like Jeff that I am worried
that they won’t be their own person.”
Mrs. Robinson interrupted, “I don’t think that is going to happen. I have
watched them growing up. They truly respect Jeff, as well they should, but he
would never tolerate them not doing their own things.”
Father Gilbert said, “Ladies and gentlemen, I am sure that whatever happens to
these wonderful young people, is made possible by a higher authority. We really
do need to go, so I can finish my preparations for the service tomorrow."
The young people came up and Toby announced, “We hung up our suits so we can go
swimming tomorrow and Drew is washing the towels so they’ll be clean for next
time.”
Everyone got up to leave and Josh and Ben started picking up the remaining
glasses and plates and took them to the kitchen. Jane and I got the coats, and
everyone thanked Mrs. Tillison for the great time. “Don’t thank me.” she said.
“I didn’t do anything. Jeff and his crew did all the work; thank him when you
see him. See you all tomorrow at church, and then at the club for lunch.”
Josh and Ben came in and asked, “Mom, is it okay if we stay overnight?”
“I didn’t know that you were planning to not stay. Josh, your bedroom is ready
for you. Drew cleaned it and changed the sheets and put fresh towels in the
bathroom for you.” Mrs. Tillison answered.
Ben said, “I wouldn’t miss tomorrow for anything. I think things at your church
and the club will never be the same.” Jane, Hank and I got ready to go. We
kissed the ladies and shook hands with the guys and left.
To be continued...
Editor's notes:
My goodness, I find myself with no comments except to say, my goodness, there
sure is a lot going on all at once. I think there will be a lot more stuff
happening in the next chapter, and once again, I am having trouble waiting.
