Chapter 27
The New Year’s Eve Party

When we got home, Jeff organized everyone, “Dad, you and Pops are going to be the bar tenders. Okay troops, let’s get the place ready. When everyone was there Jeff introduced everyone and greeted all the guests like they were long lost relatives and announced, “I don’t want to talk anymore about what happened in church tonight.” and he left.

Within ten minutes, the dining room table was set with fresh shrimp and cocktail sauce, Swedish meatballs, cocktail hotdogs, a vegetable platter and a fresh fruit tray and cheeses and crackers with sliced summer sausage.

“Everyone come help yourselves. The punch on the left is for anyone over twenty one and the one on the right is for the rest of us.” Jeff announced.

Jeff went to Mrs. Baxter and asked, “May I bring you a little of everything?”

“Please, Mr. Arch Angel, but could I have some of the under 21 juice?” she asked.

“Of course.” Jeff answered. When he came back he whispered something to her and she beamed.

Everyone was visiting when all of a sudden Jeff came back only with a pair of swimming trunks on and said, “I’m going to bed. We were playing strip poker downstairs and I quit before I lost anymore clothes.”

Everyone started laughing and Tyler came in and said, “Don’t believe him. He thinks he is the new, New Year’s baby. We just couldn’t find any diapers big enough to fit him.” That sent everyone into hysterics.

Jeff disappeared and came back fully dressed and asked, “What can I get you people?”

“Jeff, I really think I need to go home. I haven’t been out this long in a long time. Would you get Kevin for me?” Mrs. Baxter asked.

“Pops, may I use the van to take Mrs. Baxter home? That way Kevin and Tyler can go with me.” Jeff asked.

Eric tossed him the keys.

“Jeff, is there enough for me to hitch a ride too? I’m getting too old for all these late nights.” asked Aunt Cora.

“O course, Aunt Cora, let me get the guys and we’ll leave.” he said as he started downstairs.

He came back with Tyler and Kevin followed by Spencer, Toby, Drew and Kenny.

“Okay ladies we’re ready to roll.” Jeff announced.

Everyone said “Goodnight.” Spencer went to Mrs. Baxter and gave her a hug and a kiss. I thought she looked like she was going to cry. “See you tomorrow Gramma B. Thanks for coming”

Spencer moved to Aunt Cora and gave her a hug and a kiss and said, “I guess we are going to have an early day tomorrow. Have a good night.”

Drew hugged Aunt Cora and they were laughing. “See you in the morning.” he said.

“Drew and Kenny you are in charge of making sure these adults have everything they need while we are gone.” Jeff said.

“Don’t worry Jeff. Toby, Teddy and I will make sure they are doing it correctly.” Spencer said as he started to walk the ladies to the van.

The guys dropped Aunt Cora off first and Jeff walked her to the house and then gave her a hug and a kiss. When they got to the Baxter’s house, everyone got out and went in. Jeff looked at the stairs and said, “Mrs. B, get ready for a carnival ride. We are going to carry you and your wheelchair up the steps at the same time.”

Jeff took the handles and said, “Kevin get the wheels. Tyler, make sure that no one falls.”

When they got to the top of the stairs, Mrs. Baxter said, “That was a lot easier on both Kevin and me. Thank you Jeff.”

“Where is your room Mrs. Baxter?” Jeff asked.

“My room is at the front there.” she pointed.

Jeff asked as he pushed her to her room, “How many bedrooms do you have Mrs. Baxter?”

“There are four bedrooms but I have made one into my sewing room which I can’t use right now. Once I go downstairs in the morning, I stay there because I don’t want Kevin to keep carrying me up and down.” she answered.

“How many bathrooms do have up here?” Jeff asked.

“There are two. One in my room and one in the hallway.” she answered.

“Mrs. Baxter, one of us will come over in the morning to help Kevin carry you down. What time would like us to be here?” Jeff asked.

“How about 8:00 since Kevin doesn’t have to work?” she answered.

“Great. One of us will be here.” he said as he kissed her and said “Goodnight.”

Jeff went downstairs and said, “Kevin, show us around down here please.”

They walked through the downstairs and Jeff had Tyler looking at everything.

Meanwhile Spencer came to me and ask, “Doctor Dad, where are the guys? You don’t think anything happened to them do you? They have been gone an awfully long time.”

I pulled him unto my lap and said, “I am sure they are fine. They probably just wanted to make sure that Mrs. Baxter was fine before they left.”

The door opened and Spencer practically flew out of my lap and ran to meet the guys, “Where have you been? Don’t you realize that you had us scared to death because you were gone so long? My nerves are shot.” Spencer spieled.

Jeff leaned down and picked Spencer up and said, “Tiger relax. I’m sorry we took so long but I wanted to check to see how we could make life easier for Mrs. Baxter and Kevin. Now go tell the hooligans in the basement that their presence is required in the kitchen.”

He turned to the rest of us and said, “I’m sorry we were gone so long.”

Mr. Robinson got up and started to talk quietly to Jeff. He asked Jeff something and Jeff started talking a mile a minute. They were interrupted when Spencer came in and said, “Jeff, everyone is in the kitchen.”

“Granddad, I’ll tell you the rest of the story tomorrow when I come to Mrs. Tillison’s to fix the meal.”

Jeff went to the kitchen and mobilized the troops. They cleared the very few left over snacks and all of the plates and utensils. Tyler and Drew brought each of the adults a glass of champagne and the young people all had a glass of something that looked like champagne. Jeff looked at the clock and started the countdown. At 12:00 everyone shouted, “Happy New Year.”

Jeff raised his glass and said, “To a happy and prosperous New Year.”

When everyone finished they started to get ready to go. Kenny asked, “Uncle Norm can I catch a ride home?”

“Sure.” Norm answered.

“Uncle Hank, will you drop Kevin off?” Jeff asked.

“Yep.” he answered.

“Granddad, you have room for Drew don’t you?” Jeff asked.

“Of course, Jeff” he answered.

Jeff and Spencer hugged everyone thanked them for coming. I noticed they both kissed Mrs. Tillison and Jeff whispered to her.

She smiled and shook her head yes. When everyone had gone Jeff turned and said, “Time for everyone under the age of 17 to get to bed and now. We have a busy morning so you need your beauty sleep.”

His brothers and Spencer left after they said their goodnights.

“Pop and Mother, you have had a busy day, so why don’t you go to bed. See you tomorrow.” He hugged them both.

He turned to me and asked, “Shouldn’t you be in bed too?”

“Nope, not until you go.” I answered.

Tyler, Jeff and I worked quickly to and we had cleaned everything up by 1:00. Jeff turned to Tyler and hugged him and said, “Thanks brother, see you in the morning. Would you help Kevin with Mrs. Baxter in the morning?”

“You got it.” Tyler answered and then he came to me and said, “Thanks for having Spencer and me here, Doctor Dad.”

I thought he was going to cry so I hugged him and said, “You better go to bed. We have a busy day tomorrow. See you in the morning son.”

He hugged both of us and left.

“Okay Jeff, let’s go to bed,” I pulled Jeff with me as I closed down the house and locked up.

When we got to the bedroom Jeff turned to me and said, “Dad I love you. Please help me stop trying to solve everyone’s problems. I am going to screw up our life if I don’t.”

He started to sob and went to brush his teeth. He came back and kissed me and crawled into bed naked and I left to do the same thing. By the time I got into bed he was asleep. I snuggled close and put my arms around him.
