Chapter 15

The Remodeling Begins

I was awakened by Jeff blowing in my ear and whispering, "I'm leaving to go get Drew and Kenny for our exercises." Jeff kissed me on the cheek, "Be ready to move when we get back."

As he left, I rolled over and thought, 'how am I going to survive?' I crawled out of bed and got dressed in workout clothes for whatever Jeff had planned for us. I had just gotten seated with a cup of coffee when the three guys came in, "Dad, let's roll. We have to be quick this morning."

We went downstairs to the workout area and I notice Jeff had already moved everything away from the area where Mr. Hendrix suggested the partition be placed. Jeff said, "Kenny, you team with Drew and I'll watch Dad. Okay everyone, warm up and stretch before we start." We all followed his lead and then he said, "Okay everyone do 15 sit ups." We did them.

"Now do 15 pushups." Jeff ordered. Jeff and Kenny did them easily, but I struggled as did Drew, but we finally made it.

"Twenty toe touches." Jeff announced. I got to four and Drew got to 12 before we started to moan that we couldn't do anymore.

Jeff stopped us and said, "Now, everyone we are going to run in place for six minutes."

Halfway through, Drew panted, "Are you trying to kill us?"

Jeff kept going and answered, "If you think this is bad, wait until you and Dad start to get in shape."

When the six minutes were up, Jeff said, "Dad, go get a fresh cup of coffee and get ready for work. I'm going to fix breakfast while Kenny and Drew push everything to either end of the living room. Guys, when you are done get a glass of juice and a roll, then get dressed for the day."

Everyone went to do as told, and when I came down dressed for the office, Jeff said, "Dad, put five glasses of juice on the table please."

Kenny came in dressed in his work clothes. Drew came in shortly, wearing a pair of jeans and a sweat shirt. The doorbell rang and I answered it. I escorted Mr. Hendrix into the kitchen and Jeff greeted him and said, "Okay everyone, find a seat at the table." He brought Mr. Hendrix a cup of coffee, put down a large plate of toast and placed some strawberry jam on the table.

He left and came back and put a ham and cheese omelet and hash brown in front of Mr. Hendrix and me. When he returned, he put a small apple slice in front of Kenny and Drew and everyone just laughed. He quickly brought their omelets and hash browns. He came back with a large bowl of fruit and his omelet. Everyone inhaled the food. When we finished, we took our plates and utensils to the sink.

Jeff said, "Mr. Hendrix, all three work areas are cleared, so you can work where and when you want."

Mr. Hendrix said, "Thanks, Jeff. Could we put our supplies in one of the garage bays so they are out of the elements and will be easier to get to?"

Jeff answered, "Why don't we put your things in the third bay of the garage? Dad is going to take my car to work, anyway. I'll move the car out now and then you can have Kenny and Drew put the things in before your other men get here." Jeff went and moved his car out, came in and handed me his keys.

"Dad, what time are Aunt Nancy and Uncle Norm due back today?"

"Their flight is due to land at 1:20 in Omaha so they should be here by 3:30. I just remembered; I was to get them some milk, bread and couple of other things."

"Tell you what Dad, you make a list of what they need, and I'll pick it up this morning and you can drop it off at their house after lunch, on your way back to the office. We are going to eat at 12:00 sharp so be here. I don't suppose you have any of the plastic sheets that you use to cover the furniture and the floors when you are painting do you?" Jeff asked.

"As a matter of fact, I do. They are on a shelf in the closet leading to the den or soon to be music room."

He hugged me, "Good, I'll see you at 11:50."

Mr. Hendrix had been watching and was just shaking his head when Kenny and Drew came in and Kenny announced, "Dad, the supplies are all in the garage. Do you want us to bring the tools in now?"

"That would be great guys and I'll tell you where to put them." Mr. Hendrix answered. The two guys left as I got my coat to go to work. Mr. Hendrix handed Jeff an envelope. "Jeff, this should take care of Kenny's expenses from last night. Don't let him know I paid you. He is worried about what you are going to make him do. Let him sweat."

As I was leaving, I saw five guys unloading another van. Jeff met them and said, "Lunch will be ready for everyone at 12:00. Help yourselves to anything to drink in the refrigerator or coffee during the day"

Mr. Hendrix assigned two of the guys to the basement and two more to the upstairs and the other older gentlemen would be working with him in the living room. He led the men, including Kenny and Drew, to the areas and explained what we wanted done.

During that time, Jeff had been busy covering the major furniture items with the plastic sheeting so they would not get covered with dust.

As Jeff finished, the three teams started to work on their assigned areas. Kenny was the runner and Drew acted as his assistant. Kenny worked with the team in the basement and Drew worked with the upstairs team. They both periodically checked with the team on the first floor. Jeff left and went to the grocery store and got the things he would need for lunch and dinner today and the meals he planned for tomorrow, plus what I needed for Norm and Nancy.

When I returned to the house at 11:45, the house smelled wonderful. Jeff turned to me and said, "Hi Dad. Could you set the table for 10 please?"

When I finished, he asked, "Now, would you please go tell the gentlemen that lunch is ready?"

I did as I was told and was surprised at how many of them I knew. Everyone washed their hands and when they were assembled in the dining room, Jeff said, "Everyone sit down. He brought everyone a bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup, took orders for drinks and delivered them. Drew helped him clear the soup bowls and they started to hand out plates with a Reuben sandwich and potato salad. Jeff finally sat down and started to eat.

When everyone had finished, he brought in a tray of warm brownies,

I got up to leave, "Jeff and Drew, I will see you in my office at 1:15."

"Dad, let me get you the things for Aunt Nancy and Uncle Norm."

He came back with a bag and handed them to me and then he handed me an envelope, "Here is an invitation, asking them to come to dinner tonight. I guess we will see you shortly." Then he added, "Maybe Kenny would like to get a physical too?"

Kenny looked at his Dad. Mr. Hendrix said, "That's probably a good idea, Son. Jack, just send me the bill. Okay everyone, time to get back to work."

Everyone took their own table utensils and dishes to the kitchen as I was leaving; Jeff was busy cleaning the kitchen. When he had everything absolutely cleaned, he got dressed and collected Kenny and Drew and left for my office.

Once they had signed in, my head nurse, Larry Lasher, went to get them immediately, since he was anxious to meet this son of mine that everyone was raving about. "Gentlemen, if you will follow me, the Doctor will see you, shortly."

He led the guys into a large treatment room which I don't usually use for physicals, but with the three of them, we thought it might me more comfortable.

Lash began by introducing himself, "I am going to take your vitals now." He weighed them, took their temperature and then took their blood pressure and pulse and recorded the results on the three charts. When he finished, he turned to the guys and said, "Get out of your clothes. Keep only your briefs or boxers on."

The guys were standing there talking when I went in. "Lash, what are you doing? Why are you gawking at these beautiful young men?" I chided.

"Doctor, a guy can always dream, can't he? It's not every day that an old black man can see such a mixture of prime beef." Lash laughed.

"Lash, what would your partner say if he heard you talking like that?" I asked.

"He would probably be so busy enjoying the scenery that he wouldn't say anything." Lash answered.

All of a sudden, Kenny said, "Lash, I think that I have seen you several times before, when you dropped Mr. Murphy off at school. He wouldn't be your partner would he?"

Lash looked at me and I nodded, yes. He turned to the guys and said, "Yes he is, but please don't say anything to anyone. Only a very few people know that we are gay, and Grant could lose his job at the school if anyone ever found out. That is why we live so far out of town."

I took control of the situation, "Guys, who wants to go first?"

Jeff answered quickly, "I will, Dad."

I did my exam and Lash recorded my findings. When I told Jeff to drop his briefs, he did so without complaint, and I checked for hernias and then I had him turn around and I checked his prostrate. When I finished, I smacked him on the behind and told him to get decent.

Kenny was next and the same things happened, except that he was wearing boxers. When I started on Drew, I told the other two, "You guys get dressed and go talk to Jane. She wants to visit with you."

After the other two guys left, I said, "Drew, take off your briefs and climb up here on the table, so I can give you an especially thorough checkup."

Lash was standing there beside me and Drew asked, "Is he going to be watching?"

"Yes." I answered. "I need his assistance. This may get a little uncomfortable, but after you told us about the bleeding, I think it is necessary."

Drew didn't look very happy, but he did everything I asked. When I finished, I told him, "You will be fine. You have some scaring, but otherwise, you are fine."

"Lash, go get the other two, and draw some blood samples and get urine specimens."

Lash did as I asked. As the guys were leaving, they stopped in my office and said, "Thanks."

"Dad, did you deliver the groceries and the invitation?" Jeff asked.

"Yes son, you worry too much."

Jeff added, "I called Mrs. Tillison and Aunt Cora, and you are to pick them up and bring them to our house on the way home. I also invited Candy since she thinks she is in love with David and she will be company for Dana." He turned to Kenny and said, "You are staying for dinner aren't you?"

Kenny looked confused, "I guess so."

Jeff turned to Lash and Jane, "I'll see both of you soon, but make sure that Dad gets out of here at a reasonable time."

They left and Lash asked, "Doctor Wilson, does Jeff always go around like a turbine in a dam."

I laughed and said, "Probably more like a tornado bearing down on you, because you never know what to expect next."

Now what?

To be continued...

Editor's notes

Well, it looks as if Drew will be okay. I was worried about him and I was glad to find out there wasn't anything dangerous waiting to cause him problems. This story keeps getting better and better. I can hardly wait for each new chapter. I am completely hooked.
