Chapter 5

The Interview

Jane didn't waste any time. "Jeff, the first question is, are you gay?"

"Yes Mrs. Thompson. I am sure that I am gay."

Greg looked at him and asked, "If you are gay, what kind of big brother would you make for Toby? Would you try to make him gay?"

"Sir, that is nothing but a myth! No one chooses to be gay and anyone worth his salt would never try to make anyone else gay. I have three brothers and I have tried to help them to become well-adjusted young men. I am sure that at least the oldest brother already knows that I am gay, but not because I ever tried to do anything with him. Neither have I discussed the issue with him. But if any of them were to ask me if I am gay, I would answer truthfully. I will not try to hide the truth from anyone.

"Jeff, what do you think that a big brother should be or do?" asked Father Gilbert.

"Father Gilbert, I think that would depend on what the younger person would like it to be, within reason. A lot would depend on how much respect the older person could gain from the younger person. Probably the most important thing would be to set a good example for the young man," he answered without hesitation.

"Jeff," Mrs. Gilbert interrupted, "Have you ever had sexual contact with anyone?"

I held my breath but Jeff nonchalantly answered. "Yes, I have performed fellatio with one other person."

She pushed, "Has anything ever been done to you?"

I couldn't take it anymore. "Mrs. Gilbert, for what it is worth, I returned the treatment Jeff gave me. He had nothing to do with my response. I am gay and Jane has known for 15 years. I asked her to intervene in any attempts to match me with a young lady. I assure that what I have done with Jeff is the first time I ever participated in a homosexual activity. To me it felt so natural that I can't see anything wrong with it. We have not harmed anyone and nor would we."

I fell back against the sofa exhausted. Jeff came to me and put his arm around me and whispered, "Dad, everything will be fine."

Everyone started to applaud. "Jeff and Jack, we want to tell you that we admire you both greatly. You only told us what I already told everyone," Jane smiled.

"Jane, I think I should fire you," I admonished.

"Try it, buster. I have hidden your accounts so deep that you will never find them and I will tell all of your patients that you are suffering from a severe nervous and mental condition," she laughed.

I walked over to Jane and hugged her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Don't ever grow old, Jane. I don't know what I'd do without you."

" Don't worry, Doctor. I'll hire Jeff here as my assistant so I can get some time off. I don't know how much help he will be, since he is going to be too busy being a big brother."

The discussion was interrupted at the point when the three Thompson children returned. Toby announced, "Great Grandpa and Grandma Sandberg sent some gifts. They told us to tell you they had to stay and take care of some of the older residents. They even asked us to sing for the people. We needed Jeff with us. They would have loved that."

Toby opened the gifts and they received a beautiful hand-carved chess set that Great Grandfather Sandberg had made. The other package had twelve beautifully knitted neck scarves for everyone. There was even one for Jeff and me.

Toby suddenly turned serious, "Jeff, are you going to be my big brother?"

Jeff looked at the Toby's parents and Greg and Anita shook their heads in the affirmative. "Toby, I would be proud to be your big brother if you can follow the rules. That means you have to do everything that you try to the best of your ability."

Toby thought for a minute and asked. "I can live with that, but what would happen if I mess up? Would you laugh at me?"

"Toby, none of us would laugh as long as you were trying your hardest. Come here little brother." Jeff wrapped his arms around Toby and held him tight.

Toby was beaming. Candy and Georgia asked skeptically, "Can you be our big brother too?"

"I can but that would mean that you will have to follow the same rules and do everything that I tell Toby. If you don't and I hear about it, I will have to think seriously about whether I can be your big brother."

Everyone was just looking at Jeff. I took the opportunity to say, "I think we had better go. I am starting to fade. It seems that my godson kept me up for a few hours last night.

Mrs. Tillison piped up. "You can't go. You said that Jeff's mother and her family are coming to stay with you, and they are going to need to camp out at your house. Anita, you are keeping up with the latest decorating trend in interior design right?"

"Yes Grams, I do two or three jobs a year just to keep in touch with the current trends and styles."

"Why don't you drive us to Jack's house in the van since it is going to be Jeff, Jane, you and me, and probably Toby? Jack, you really should come since we may change your entire house," Mrs. Tillison added.

I responded, "I'll be outnumbered so I think I'll go visit my new godson and Cindy while everyone is gone. I'll let Jeff make all of the decisions on the house."

I visited the new parents and saw that my godson and everyone was doing fine. When I got back to the Thompson's house, everyone else was already there.

"Jack, I am amazed that you haven't done anything with the rest of your house!" Jane scolded. "You have lived there for three years."

"Dad, how much money can I spend to fix the house before Mother, Pops, and the guys get here?" asked Jeff.

I looked at Jane, "Jane, how much money do I have to spend?"

"Don't ask me. I only manage your business accounts so I have no idea what your net value is. Ask Hank."

Hank looked at me in disbelief. "Jack, you have no idea what your financial status is do you?"

"No. Jane keeps putting reports on my desk but I figure that if it were bad, someone would tell me. I just file the reports in the desk without looking at them."

Hank shook his head, "I don't know exactly how much money you have, but I would guess that your assets are probably near a million-and-a-half, but I would have to check with Randy Carmichael to be sure since I turned your accounts over to him."

Mrs. Tillison jumped in. "Is that the cute young man who is managing my accounts?"

"Grams, Randy is gay, but it doesn't matter. He is very adept at his job of handling people's finances. The people and the bank are making money," Hank responded.

"How much would you estimate my estate is worth, Hank?" Mrs. Tillison asked.

"Mom, I have no idea what the exact amount might be but I would guess it is somewhere in the neighborhood of two hundred million dollars."

Mrs. Tillison thought for a minute, "I guess I had better pay attention to those accounts. Anita, Jane, Jeff, and Jack, we need to go check some things at my house. I have made some rough sketches of what I think should happen at Jack's house but Anita will need to do the refinements."

Father Gilbert stood and announced, "We really need to go since we have another commitment. This has been a most enlightening and enjoyable afternoon. Jeff, I'll see you early in the morning."

What does Mrs. Tillison have on her mind?
